genshin leaks regarding varessa, my thoughts, and a [WIP] redesign underneath:

working on my first edit of the year :•3 this is a leak ofc, so once she receives more art + we have more information about her, then I'll remake it !

there are a few things that i both like and dislike about her design - for one, i actually really adore the bottom half of her design !!! a lot of hoyoverse designs tend to be really top heavy, often neglecting the legs at the detriment of the design, so i think it's a great change for once ! she also has a more pronounced hourglass figure, which helps her silhouette a lot !

however, i do think that her midriff being so empty does a disservice to her design, and let's not even forget to mention the blatant whitewashing :•( her colours are also very. in your face, lol, and are a bit clashing imo - her design isn't as bad as, let's say, chasca, for example, and i do think she has a lot of potential though !

from what we know about her from other characters, she's meant to be a professional competitive eater, and apparently, even a wrestler ? it'll be nice to see her interact with itto, lmao, especially considering the bull / cow motifs and the involvement in martial arts. i wonder if they took inspiration from that kawaii japanese wrestler that has been going viral lately tbh.

apologies if it looks a bit rough haha, this is just the planning stage for now -

anyways, the biggest change i made so far, besides the skin tone ofc (its not finalised yet btw, bc im not too sure if i want to go lighter or darker, but i do know that i want her to have pinker undertones - ive tried doing more yellow / olive undertones to tie in her sweater more, but it ended up ruining the whole thing 😭), was to change her two-piece into more of a leotard / swimsuit inspired piece that she wears underneath her skirt and sweater ! while I'm not always the biggest fan of a lot of modesty redesigns (especially with characters that i feel like it actually does a disservice to or takes away what makes the character stand out, like yae miko), i think it helps tie in her black elements more + provides more interest to her midriff. i also changed her body shape a bit to make her feel more balanced + a slightly more realistic figure, especially regarding her hobbies. i also made her face rounder, but i also tried to change her eye shape slightly so that me making her face rounder wouldn't make her look more baby-faced than in her original yk ?

as for later, i want to desaturate her hair a bit so that it clashes less with her sweater - it feels like the colours are fighting for dominance, so i think adding more contrast would really benefit the design.

i also want to possibly bring in the pink rope that's around her left arm and incorporate it somewhere else in her design. if not the rope, then at least the darker pink - maybe in the knee brace that she wears ?

speaking of, i actually think that the hearts and crosses motifs r really cute, especially the hearts, but they do feel quite out of place, with how much triangular patterns she has going on :•< i do wonder if there's any sort of lore relevancy behind it, so unfortunately there's not much i can do about it now, until we get more information about her, i suppose.

overall, despite having many flaws, i dont think she has the WORST design to come out of the natlan patch yet, but im probably biased because I've been looking out for her since her teaser + also my love for pastel characters (like sigewinne and mizuki) :'•)

On the subject of Genshin Impact's upcoming character, Varessa.

Look, is it aggregious fan service? yes. is she actually plus sized? not remotely. Is she a walking stereotype? yep. will I be pulling for her? yes - now hear me out

I don't want the one character with slight curves to be such a contentious character that Mihoyo never does it again, I want the community to share their complaints and hold hoyo accountable, definitley.

But I want her to be a stepping stone, because hoyo often re-use their character models so if we can get more characters with different body types than just "skinny" then that would be awesome, and she's not plus sized but her model (not her design mind you i know shes literally a cow, but just the body model) is more like a normal everyday person so isnt that a step in the right directon? Hoyo re-use their character models so maybe we can have more normal (to be clear Varessa is not plussized she's average sized) looking characters.

please hoyo I need characters that don't look like they're eating exactly 3 broccoli and a single rice grain every meal

I just don't want this to fail because of what it isn't, hoyo needs to be aware she's not plus sized and we should absolutely hold them to account for that but maybe we should take this as a (misplaced and somewhat insulting) step in the right direction? I don't know, I just don't want this to fail and be the end of the discussion and the end of Hoyo expanding their character models, because if it does well and there's also a community conversation maybe we can have aesthetically pleasing characters of all body types.

Side anectdote: Personally I'd love a masculine healer with a dad bod, maybe he's the dad of another character. That'd be so cool.

Anyway, to summarise, I want hoyo to expand their models and while this didn't hit the mark, I don't want us to make it a failure simply because it's not completely what we want. Its a start (a misplaced start let's be clear) but its a start.

Aaa I love Varessa so much. I just played Genshin for the first time in months and she’s precious. I saw a post on Reddit from here complaining about her being a cow-girl who eats all the time as if she’s genshin’s resident fat person who’s a terrible representation of body variation. But oh after reading about her and trying her out, it’s worse. She eats so much to bulk up. She’s a luchador. She’s fucking adorable. She’s their resident muscle girl. This girl.

Saw Varesu in the leaks and totally fell in love.

She's the ultimate fanservice character, which is kinda off-putting… but at the same time, it works for her. And honestly, all her other perks make up for that little "flaw." (I just love small and chubby ones) ^_^
