Sooooo...
I'm planning to move into a van and give vanlife a go.
Rent is too expensive for the damp, mouldy, pest-infested flat that I am currently renting, and the landlords do not give a shit about the tenants here. The general of cost of living here in the UK is too much and it gets worse every day, with warm spaces having to be created and food banks running on empty because we cannot afford to live.
I was absolutely against vanlife at first due to personal stuff, but now I'm all for it and the things I was worried about before aren't as scary to me now.
Yes, I know vanlife is absolutely not the beaches, gloriously sunny, pi, no problems crap that Instagrammers and most YouTubers sell. It's hard work, it's cramped, hard to find work sometimes, can be lonely, and repairs can be expensive, but it's nowhere near as expensive as renting a flat or living in a house and paying money to people who don't give a shit about the people at the bottom.
This is a new chapter in my life and I'm going to enjoy it and exist instead of being trapped and barely getting by.

We have now started phase two of our travels in Brissie (our van). We spent our first two nights at this peaceful spot at Western Super Mare. The trees created wonderful silhouettes against the evening sky. On the second night we had a fox outside our door.
Hopefully we can get the van fixed and we can hit the road.

[2024-12-1 image ©pcmg] There is much discussion about the low height satellites that cover the globe; some good some bad. Some people who are 'vanlifers' use satellite to provide themselves with broadband. This has a couple of issues [1] you need a view of the sky so cannot park up in a forest and [2]the cost is greater than other solutions. So today let up examine how satellites can help in mobile phone technology.
Firstly, Apple have a satellite chip in their new iPhones that are capable of sending emergency messages when there is no mobile connection. More use in the US with its vast areas of uninhabited land but is also of use in remote mountainous areas in the UK.
But perhaps the best use of satellite is for backhaul in those areas that are hard to reach by fibre. Hard here means expensive. Those areas where the provision of a mast would allow mobile connectivity, but the back haul does not exist. In these areas not only would a satellite connection allow mobiles, it waould also allow home broadband via 5G then onot satellite, rather than everyone having their own satellite. Current the UKG is trialling such connections.
The problem with satellite is that there is more of a lag, the signal must travel further, the base station must have a clear view of the sky (just not in a forest) and the cost is higher. But if you have no alternative, you will pay the cost.

Emily Pennington - Adventurer, solo traveler and Author of “Feral: Losing Myself and Finding My Way in America’s National Parks”
Emily is an adventurer, solo traveler, mountaineer, quote collector, and all around lover of things that get people out of their comfort zones. Put on her first international flight at 3 weeks old, she's been adventuring in one way or another ever since.
From wandering the forests of Sweden alone at the age of nine, to solo trekking in the Himalayas of India, to joining the circus as a professional aerialist, Emily is a big fan of the "just get out there and do it" mentality. She considers it her mission in life to inspire others to go outside, travel, and get curious about everything. As John Muir so aptly put it, "going out is really going in.”
Emily is a columnist and longtime contributor to Outside. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, Condé Nast Traveler, Lonely Planet, Adventure Journal, REI, and Backpacker, among others.
Emily has visited every national park in the United States, and her book Feral: Losing Myself and Finding My Way in America’s National Parks, came out in February 2023.
About Feral: A bracing memoir about self-discovery, liberating escape, and moving forward across an adventurous and volatile American landscape. One year. One national park at a time.
“After a decade as an assistant to high-powered LA executives, Emily Pennington left behind her structured life and surrendered to the pull of the great outdoors. With a tight budget, meticulous routing, and a temperamental minivan she named Gizmo, Emily embarked on a yearlong road trip to sixty-two national parks, hell-bent on a single goal: getting through the adventure in one piece. She was instantly thrust into more chaos than she’d bargained for and found herself on an unpredictable journey rocked by a gutting romantic breakup, a burgeoning pandemic, wildfires, and other seismic challenges that threatened her safety, her sanity, and the trip itself.
What began as an intrepid obsession soon evolved into a life-changing experience. Navigating the tangle of life’s unexpected sucker punches, Feral invites readers along on Emily’s grand, blissful, and sometimes perilous journey, where solitude, resilience, self-reliance, and personal transformation run wild.”
We first spoke with Emily on 17th December 2019. You can listen to that episode here - https://www.toughgirlchallenges.com/single-post/emily-pennington

I don’t know what it is but we love graffiti… especially when it’s in the oddest places. also as a child of (UK) travellers i think usa "vanlife" vs uk "living on-site" is SO different because I've seen people in the US with these 140k vans and RVs with hydraulic beds and whathaveyou whereas my parents chose to live in a van because it was CHEAPER than living in a house. there was also a way bigger sense of community in the uk "nomadic living" scene (as they're calling it now) because you tended to park up in places with other travellers. i see so many people in vanlife tiktok comments asking if the children have friends and i'm like that's stupid of course they do. because i had a lot of friends who lived in vehicles as a kid. and then i remember there isn't that sense of community in the us vanlife scene. it's SO WILD because my perception of like "vanlife"/a traveller lifestyle is so much more full of community and communal living, whereas the us scene seems to just be rich people who think that they're raging against the system by living in a vehicle and making their kids sleep in slots in the wall??
van life critical tiktok is so annoying because it's like yeah i do see your points occasionally but also i feel like if you were in the uk you'd be calling cops on GRT families just living their lives

Van Build: Sub Floor & Flooring
Van Build: Sub Floor & Flooring
There are so many different ways to go around building a van, and I don’t think there’s really a wrong or a right one. Some people do the floor first before they insulate their walls; some people insulate the whole van before they move on; some people leave the floor/flooring for later when they have their bed, kitchen, living area, etc all built. But with the van fully insulated (walls, ceiling,…

System of Hate against Vanlife in the UK
System of Hate against Vanlife in the UK https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2f12UQop5w Difficult times ahead in the UK as we battle Vanlife problems as park ups are increasingly being shut down by councils .Where do we go from here ? Europe seems the Answer but only allowed 90 Days since Brexit . Freedoms being taken away and pushed onto campsites or pub stops .
