Sooooo...

I'm planning to move into a van and give vanlife a go.

Rent is too expensive for the damp, mouldy, pest-infested flat that I am currently renting, and the landlords do not give a shit about the tenants here. The general of cost of living here in the UK is too much and it gets worse every day, with warm spaces having to be created and food banks running on empty because we cannot afford to live.

I was absolutely against vanlife at first due to personal stuff, but now I'm all for it and the things I was worried about before aren't as scary to me now.

Yes, I know vanlife is absolutely not the beaches, gloriously sunny, pi, no problems crap that Instagrammers and most YouTubers sell. It's hard work, it's cramped, hard to find work sometimes, can be lonely, and repairs can be expensive, but it's nowhere near as expensive as renting a flat or living in a house and paying money to people who don't give a shit about the people at the bottom.

This is a new chapter in my life and I'm going to enjoy it and exist instead of being trapped and barely getting by.

We have now started phase two of our travels in Brissie (our van). We spent our first two nights at this peaceful spot at Western Super Mare. The trees created wonderful silhouettes against the evening sky. On the second night we had a fox outside our door.

Hopefully we can get the van fixed and we can hit the road.

I'm not into van life stuff though I've seen the discussions, but I think there's like a whole range of things there. Like the aspirational stuff is always gonna be luxurious because barely anyone is going to pass around the videos of someone showing off their shit bucket.

I think there's also a difference between gentrified and aspirational, like gentrified would be people buying up all of the vans to rent out to people, aspirational is just what capitalism does to anything.

Unless they're not giving up homes, they're renting them out, it's not technically something which can be solved by the people just living in expensive properties rather than going on the road. I'd call it a sort of bougie tourism maybe?

Similar to when people go camping but bring a posh yurt and firepit rather than sleep in a polyester triangle in the mud.

There's more realistic things which are people who just want to try saving money by travelling on the road, not just people who are forced to live in their car. I've seen a few videos of people who just are able to work from anywhere with wifi, and want to try not paying rent for a while.

I do think it'd be good though for more rich people to have to deal with the problems of not having a physical address, because they will then bother to poke the right people to make those less of a problem.

I think the major issues with things such as "#vanlife" are that people see the most aspirational and perfect lives, and then get very disappointed/angry about the gap between their lives and the aspirational sort. It's never the people living in amazon carpark who are showing their lives. I think one of the best things to do would be to stop giving them your time and energy. There's some more realistic van dwellers out there if you are actually interested in living on the road.

Here in the UK we've had travelling people for ages, namely the romanys and irish or scottish travellers, but we also have newage travellers who started travelling in the 60s and boat people/bargees on the canals. So I think when we think of travelling people those are the people who first come to mind. They tend to be in caravans, maybe even traditional vardos, rather than vans.

In the US I don't think there's been many travelling sorts since the 60s hippies until vanlife, so there's also less of a cultural aspect I feel? A lot more of a settled people than those who know travellers.

Is it just me or is van life just gentrified homelessness. Like when people live in their cars because of eviction or escaping toxic households its generally seen as tacky and gross and they're not allowed to park anywhere.

Meanwhile when upperclass people decide to live out of the back of a van and pour thousands of dollars into the world's most dubious plumbing it's "eco friendly, and adventurous". The questions are always about how cool it is to live without roots and travel the world.

And it's not like these people are making housing more available to those who need it with this choice. The houses and apartments van lifers are abandoning aren't in a price range people who live in cars involuntarily can afford.

And that's not even talking about all the problems not having a physical address poses. You need proof of residence to get an ID, which by extension impacts your ability to Vote, get jobs, library cards, receive mail (pay bills), send children to public school, get medical care. All these things are completely glossed over by these van life enthusiasts.

also as a child of (UK) travellers i think usa "vanlife" vs uk "living on-site" is SO different because I've seen people in the US with these 140k vans and RVs with hydraulic beds and whathaveyou whereas my parents chose to live in a van because it was CHEAPER than living in a house. there was also a way bigger sense of community in the uk "nomadic living" scene (as they're calling it now) because you tended to park up in places with other travellers. i see so many people in vanlife tiktok comments asking if the children have friends and i'm like that's stupid of course they do. because i had a lot of friends who lived in vehicles as a kid. and then i remember there isn't that sense of community in the us vanlife scene. it's SO WILD because my perception of like "vanlife"/a traveller lifestyle is so much more full of community and communal living, whereas the us scene seems to just be rich people who think that they're raging against the system by living in a vehicle and making their kids sleep in slots in the wall??

van life critical tiktok is so annoying because it's like yeah i do see your points occasionally but also i feel like if you were in the uk you'd be calling cops on GRT families just living their lives
