I ended up making a prequel spicy one shot for this, bc it was clogging my writer brain and nothing else came out otherwise; Back in the Day
Tumblr media
I was supposed to do a Uni task, instead I finished these
Doodles for Wraiths of Zaun, I haven't actually written the seventh chapter yet (at the moment of posting this) so that bottom left is a light spoiler. Not that you can actually grasp much of what is going on there. Also trying to draw baby Vi was hard, couldn't find a very good ref.
The cuddle doodle has no chapter associated with it, because, well, that's just how these two often nap in the fic off screen and on-screen lol. (Also, top left has inaccurate comments, in the actual scene Silco doesn't actually say anything to Vander about that, but he's DEFINITELY thinking this)

So it's been pointed out that in the set design for Silco's office, there are a lot of canvases, almost all of which are turned backwards and leaned against objects.
Now, I don't think these would be Jinx's artworks, because she doesn't seem the type to use canvases (the world is her canvas bay bee) plus I strongly doubt Silco would hide them like that, seeing as he has a bunch of her drawings where he can see them, so it can (and has) been surmised that Silco is something of an artist himself, esp. since he designed the Zaun symbol, but this makes me feral and I w a n t people to discuss it more like
Imagine Silco using painting to cope with his trauma and grief and sadness, but he doesn't want anyone (even his daughter) to see because he wants to appear unbothered by his horrifically traumatic life? Imagine the things he would paint. Vander, pulsing with Shimmer, terrifying; Vander's silhouette through the bloody water; Felicia's vacant stare on the bridge, the bleak tunnels of the mines. Hell, maybe he didn't want Jinx to see them for fear they'd upset or trigger her, too.
Now imagine Silco in the AU, getting into painting again, in a Zaun that is independent and free, and hiding them from Vander, but Vander finding paintings of his own looming form and for the first time seeing that horrible night through Silco's eyes and AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

I really want to talk about what I believe this moment meant for Babette. I will do my best to stick with what we're certain of, but I will probably digress.
We know that Babette watched Jinx grow up. She saw Powder when she was just a little girl struggling to keep up with her sister and brothers, and then she saw her become Jinx with Silco.
When Vi spoke with her, Babette did not seem to hold any hope. A lot of people have pointed out that despite having the information, Babette did not tell Vi about Jinx. However, Vi specifically had asked her this: "Have you heard anything about Powder? I think Silco has her."
While Babette did not answer, she did look utterly heartbroken.
Tumblr media
From what we see, no one views Jinx as Powder anymore in the Lanes. That girl is gone. That girl, for all intents and purposes, is dead.
This is likely not the first time Babette has seen this happen.
Babette likely saw it happen with Silco first.
Babette likely saw a little boy become a young man with dreams only to watch him fall into darkness, never to claw his way out.
So when she hangs her head and mutters, "It's nothing" after Vi leaves, it's because she already knows the outcome.
She knows what to expect.
She knows not to hope.
But then, unlike Silco, Babette gets to see Jinx do good despite it all.
Tumblr media
I don't think she sees Powder here.
I think she sees she was wrong, that Jinx didn't succumb to darkness entirely.
I think she sees a piece of the determination that was in Silco's eyes as a young rebel.
I think she sees a piece of that drive to care for others that Vander had when watching over the Lanes.
And I think all at once for Babette, not everything is lost. Not Silco's dream, not Vander's hope, and not that little girl she once saw toddling after her siblings.

Personal Arcane Analysis (cuz I'm rewatching arcane and I'm unwell about it)
Im actually on my knees. Love, that's it, love.
Vander, Silco and Felicia (and Benzo) started the Last Drop and agreed to all take care of the kids because they all loved each other. Vander took in Vi and Powder/Jinx because he loved Felicia. He didn't want to fight because he didn't want to loose the family he loved so much and Vi wanted to fight for the same reason. Vander gave himself up instead of Vi because he loved her, his other kids, and the people of the lanes.
Jayce chased magic his whole life because of the love he held for people (hear me out on this) he saw how beautiful and helpful magic could be, he chased it and was obsessed with it his entire life because of Viktor saving him. His first thought when he and Viktor founded Hextech was 'I can help people', his love for people, for helping them.
Viktor's entire reason for being in the academy in the first place was love. His parent's love for him led them to help him sneak into the academy. Sure he only joined Jayce out of curiosity but it grew to love, same for Mel; she started her 'investment' in Jayce out of a want for power but it's so clear that she grew to genuinely love him (Mel and Vik parallels my love).
I could go on and on and on (and I will) but I have assignments to finish so I'll do it later

🎵If I die in this world, Who will know something of me? I am lost, no one knows, There's no trace of my yearning🎵
Want some advice? Always make notes or a sketch of what you want to convey.Because this was the basic idea I think, but I feel that I missed something that I wanted to add, to transmit, I even forgot what inspired me to do this. Anyway, I like the final result.
BTW the lyrics I put as description has nothing to do with the main idea.Until just now that I'm posting it I remembered and it matches (thanks Shin godzilla) but that's not what inspired me to do this.I just don't like to leave posts untitled.

PROOF THAT VANDER WAS THE DIRTY (not so) LITTLE THING, NOT SILCO
Ok listen. Let's just look back to their e3 conversation for a sec. Vander asks Silco why he's doing this. Silco answers "for resPECT,... everything they've denied us." Emphasis on the word "us". He is NOT talking about gaining respect for himself, he is talking about respect for "us", every Zaunite. Vander then says that Silco had everyone's respect and that was never enough for him. Ok so what does that mean? Even if we take s2's plot hole-ridden timeline that still doesn't make any sense. Vander himself took responsibility for the bridge riot, both in s1 and s2, so at the very least it would have been a joint decision. Also, if we look at the rest of Silco's actions in s1, literally nothing he does suggests that he was trying to gain respect for himself. Personally, I think Vander was projecting when he said that. Silco doesn't even acknowledge what he said, he immediately starts talking about how he wants freedom for all of the undercity because, again, it was never about him.
Now let's look more closely at Vander. Just look at this guy. He clearly hates himself ROFL. Look at his body language, specifically in that scene where Sevika ends his career with three words. Like he was trying so hard to control the crowd, to appear confident/intimidating and he failed miserably lol. Meanwhile, look at Silco's body language, he's so casual about it yet he still appears confident and intimidating. It just comes naturally to him. Also look at how easily he could control the chembarons. That is NOT the body language of someone who sees himself as a dirty little thing imo. (also the only reason the writers came up with Silco being a dirty little thing is because they thought wanting to liberate your country is unrelatable lmao).
Based on what we do know about Vander in his youth, he seemed like an incredibly violent and short tempered guy. Maybe people saw him as just some brute and he didn't want to be seen that way. Idk. Now I'm not saying that Vander didn't care about liberation, I think he did, but I also think that subconsciously his main motivation was gaining respect, and that's why he gave up so easily and felt so ashamed for leading the riot. He doesn't stop to think that the people who went with him did so because they believed in the cause, and that by giving up and forcing everyone down with him he is undermining what they died for. Basically, he had all these people's respect, but it wasn't enough for him, he wanted more, and it ended up getting people killed.
Also while we are on the topic of respect, I think the s2 timeline having Vander drown Silco after he gives up undermines Silco's line "I hated you but you kept my respect," because why would Silco have respect for Vander if he had already given up? Thanks I hate it.
