[ad_1] Indian Women’s Hockey Team (Image: Hockey India) After a seven-year break, the much-awaited return of the Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25 is set to make history, with the introduction of an exclusive women’s league for the first time. The women’s auction, scheduled for 15th October 2024, will see over 350 players available for selection, marking a significant milestone in the development of women’s hockey in India. The launch of a dedicated women’s league alongside the men’s tournament highlights a significant step towards greater equality and inclusivity in Indian sports. The HIL’s new format ensures that female athletes have a platform to showcase their skills at the highest level, promoting a more competitive future for the sport. Over 250 domestic and 70 international women’s players will participate in the auction, with prominent Indian stars such as goalkeeper Savita, captain Salima Tete, drag-flicker Deepika, veteran Vandana Katariya, and forward Lalremsiami headlining the event. International hockey icons like Delfina Merino (Argentina), Charlotte Stapenhorst (Germany), Maria Granatto (Argentina), Rachael Lynch (Australia), and Nike Lorenz (Germany) are also set to participate, making it a global event. The first season of the Women’s HIL will feature four teams: Soorma Hockey Club (Haryana and Punjab), Shrachi Rahr Bengal Tigers (West Bengal), Delhi SG Pipers (New Delhi), and Odisha Warriors (Rourkela). Two additional teams, Hyderabad Toofans and BC Jindal Group (Mumbai), will join in the second season. Each team will have a roster of 24 players, comprising 16 Indian players (including four junior players) and 8 overseas players. Franchises will have a budget of INR 2 crores, with athletes divided into base price categories of INR 10 lakhs, INR 5 lakhs, and INR 2 lakhs. Reflecting on the league’s significance, Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey stated, “This is not just a revival of the Hockey India League but also a celebration of the growth of women’s hockey in India. We are proud to host the first-ever women’s auction, which is not just about building teams but also about building legacies.” He further emphasized the opportunity for domestic talent to compete with international players, creating new role models for future generations. Hockey India Secretary General Shri Bhola Nath Singh described the event as a turning point for Indian women’s hockey, adding, “The women’s auction and league will provide a much-needed platform for our female athletes to showcase their talents and compete at the highest level. It’s a powerful statement of intent, demonstrating our dedication to growing women’s hockey in the country.” The post Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25 Women’s Auction: Paving the Way for a New Era in Indian Women’s Hockey appeared first on Sports News Portal | Latest Sports Articles | Revsports.
