It’s important for indie artists to know that when you are registering for protection against your intellectual property (copyright), that you must register for two separate copyrights. The first copyright that must be filed is called the “Underlying Musical Composition”. The composition is known as a musical work w/ or w/o lyrics that has been created by a songwriter/producer. The second copyright registration that must be filed is called the “Sound Recording”. A sound recording often referred to as a “master is a recording of the performance of an underlying composition.
