Highway Cavalier and Dulcinea
Fifth in the “Putting Alice into Nort’s Skin Lines” project
They would tell tales of thee, if they knew thee, my Dulcinea. Instead, I, thy humble vassal, thy cavalier of the highway, tell tales of thee. A lady of grace and poise, riding astride your piebald hackney, hair of gold plaited back, eyes like suns beneath your goggles, hands like ivory steering your noble steed – any beam of the sun of thy beauty that reached my eyes would have given light to my reason and strength to my heart, so that I could be unmatched and unequaled in wisdom and valor. Thou hast strayed away from El Toboso, and yet I cannot seek thee.
Design and backstory under the cut:
Setting/text notes:
Highway Cavalier obviously based on Don Quixote with ‘the Cavalier’ and ‘Rocinante’, so Alice was a natural fit for a Dulcinea, a remote and far off lover who the cavalier acts for.
I imagine Alice died prior to the events of the story but maybe she’s just far far away…
Part of the text is directly lifted from Chapter 8 of Volume 2, in the Ormsby translation.
Thee and thou for ~intimacy~
Imagine this as an old-timey black and white photograph Norton keeps in his glovebox…
Norton’s design:
Agh agh agh so much to change so little time agh agh agh
Ok so the typical motorcycle jacket we think of wasn’t in production until at least the 20s but I figured a short riding coat would make sense. We do have motorcycle riding in this period (motor corps in World War I!) plus riding gear is consistent between that and horses.
The pants with the knee-reinforcements are normal, so I kept them but they’re not… jeans. His undershirt is a regular stand-up collar shirt – protective, but not whatever he’s got for padding there.
Alice’s design:
So women also had a motorcycle corps in World War I which is pretty cool. Their coats tended to be longer and somewhat fuller, with most of the shaping coming from the belting and some very heavy pleats in the waist. These were, quite spiffily, worn with a shirtwaist and tie. Pants/ jodhpurs were common (split skirts were too, the point being you NEED to ride astride on a motorcycle.)
The motorcycle they’re leaning on is hers, which is a contemporary Phelon & Moore 500cc single cylinder motorcycle.
This is the age of no helmets. So. No helmets.

Horses in the Woodland Realm
Tumblr media
Historically, the Silvan Elves that dwelt in Greenwood the Great, prior to the coming of their Sindar rulers, had no desire or reason to keep horses. Horses were neither necessary nor practical for travel within their dense woodlands, and the Silvans did not journey frequently enough from their home territory to require them. As peaceful Elves, they also had all the stamina and time in the world to walk leisurely to their destinations.
Even with the arrival of the would-be King Oropher and his brethren, there were only a handful of Sindar who brought horses along with them, and continued the practice of riding as a means of transport, whether for recreation or warfare. In the Second Age, the most skilled of these horse-riders was the Crown Prince Thranduil.
Tumblr media
Thranduil, the Great Rider
Thranduil grew up in Doriath among the Sindar, an environment where horse riding was not a very common practice.
It was not until he participated in the War of Wrath and trained as a soldier amongst the Vanyar and Noldor, did he learn to be around and ride horses.
(Note: Thranduil's participation in this war is a controversial headcanon and a massive deal that doesn't get addressed enough. It needs its own separate, in-depth discussion--or two or three!)
For his valor during the war, Thranduil was gifted by his commanders with the orphaned horse he rode during the later battles, a great stallion that originated from Valinor, carried across the sea with the Host of the West. He named the horse Raindal, meaning "wandering feet".
As a creature of Valinor, Raindal was blessed with extraordinarily long life and vigor, similar to that of Elves. The steed accompanied Thranduil throughout his widespread travels and adventures early in the Second Age, and carried him to Greenwood when Oropher and his kin migrated out of Lindon in c. SA 750.
Thranduil commanded the forces that cleansed Greenwood from the encroachment of orcs and evil creatures that had survived the Great War (see related HCs here).
He made such a fearsome, terrible vision in hunting down the foul beasts, astride his great horse, that the Silvan Elves thought he might have been Oromë himself coming to their aid.
During the Second Age, many Greenwood Elves referred to their new Prince reverently as "The Great Rider".
Sadly, Thranduil's 1,700-year friendship with Raindal came to an end when the great horse perished during the Sack of Eregion, a battle in which Thranduil fought to rescue the elleth he loved, Lady Maereth. Later on, opponents of his betrothal to Maereth claimed it was an ill-foreboding sign that he should not marry her.
Despite mating with countless different mares over the centuries, Raindal never successfully sired offspring.
After the loss of Raindal, Thranduil never kept or claimed another horse of his own. For the rest of the Second Age, he rode only in certain times of need, and never using the same animal.
Tumblr media
Thranduil only found a replacement for Raindal when he discovered the first of his elks, a one-of-a-kind species never before seen in Rhovanion or perhaps all of Middle-earth. He named the elk Alvar, meaning "good fortune", considering the creature a gift from the Valar themselves.
Henceforth that particular breed of elk became known as the "King's Elk", and was bred and raised exclusively to be the mount of the Elvenking of the Woodland Realm.
(Note: A detailed history of Thranduil and his elk, and the characteristics of the "King's Elk" will be discussed in future headcanons, since it is also a lengthy topic!)
The finding of Alvar factored heavily into Thranduil's decision to join the Last Alliance of Elves and Men (which then pushed Oropher to ride into war), and was instrumental in his survival of the bloody battles.
Alvar lived up until TA 318 to an estimated age of about 400 years old. The great steed was replaced by his offspring sired with a native Greenwood elk, a crossbreeding effort overseen by Thranduil's young son, Prince Gelir. (referenced in the fanfic "Greenleaf's Day Out")
Tumblr media
Mirkwood's Ties with the Rohirrim Ancestors
Tumblr media
Very early in the Third Age, horses were bred and kept by the Greenwood Elves in small numbers, for the main purpose of travel outside of the Woodland Realm to other kingdoms.
Because most Silvans seldom ventured beyond Woodland territory, such travel was primarily done by the Royal Family and their retinue.
However, the Greenwood breeds at that time, which descended from native wild horses in the eastern plains of Rhovanion, struggled to meet the rigorous work often required by Thranduil and his elder sons.
Greenwood horses were smaller, gentler, and not physically built for warfare, charging, or enduring over long distances.
Thranduil and his elder sons, Crown Prince Mirion and Prince Tuhrir, were all over seven feet tall, and the princes inherited the heavy warrior builds of their Noldorin ancestors from the First Age. As they grew older and stronger and heavier, it became very difficult to find horses that could match the level of physicality their activities required.
The Woodland Elves had friendly relations with the Northmen who occupied the Vales of Anduin in scattered tribes.
One nomadic tribe in particular, who called themselves the Lôthéod, had old traditions of taming and breeding wild horses all across Rhovanion.
When they learned about the Woodland Princes' unique predicament, they came forward and offered knowledge about an "untamable" herd of "giant" wild horses they came across in their travels down the northern Wilderland.
The Lôthéod believed their lack of success in capturing this wild horse breed was because they descended from horses of the High Elves from the First Age, and therefore could only be mastered by those with High Elf (Calaquendi) blood.
Young Prince Turhir (less than 90 years old at the time) received permission from his father the Elvenking to accompany the Lôthéod to the northern lands and seek out these special horses.
After several years, around TA 120, the Lôthéod--with the help of Turhir--succeeded in capturing and taming the first of the northern wild horses, which were given the name, "Arroch" (noble horse).
With the Lôthéod's guidance, the Woodland Elves succeeded in bringing the Arrochs to their lands and bred them in very small numbers for over two millennia.
From that time on, Turhir had a special affinity for the Northmen horse lords, a friendship that continued for centuries to their descendants, the Éothéod, and finally the Rohirrim.

The Arrochs: Horses of Princes
Similar to the Mearas, the Arrochs were extremely selective about whom they permitted to ride them. Presumably, only Elves with Calaquendi blood (which the Mirkwood Princes had through their mother) could safely ride an Arroch.
Although Arrochs were owned almost exclusively by the Sons of Thranduil, there were no laws restricting the use or ownership of Arrochs to Elven nobility. However, it was extremely risky to attempt to mount one without "permission", as these great horses were notorious for seriously injuring or even killing riders they rejected.
Their accepted origin story is that Arrochs descended from Valinoran horses of the Great War, similar to Thranduil's old horse Raindal but interbred with Middle-earth horses.
They were long-lived, but not immortal. Their lifespan averaged about two hundred years. Although more durable (in flesh and will) than most horses, they could be slain by standard weapons.
Arrochs were highly intelligent, and could be trained to understand commands in different languages.
They were extraordinarily brave in battle and did not scare or bolt even in the face of terrible monsters. They were fiercely loyal to their masters, willing to give their lives rather than preserve themselves.
They had high endurance levels, and could sustain a hard gallop for hours without need for rest, even when bearing heavy or multiple riders.
They could be ridden without saddle or reins, but the Princes usually outfitted them with tack for the safety of others who assisted in handling and caring for them (such as stable hands or soldiers).
What differentiated the Arrochs most from the Mearas was their enormous size. On average, they stood 7 feet tall at the withers and weighed at least 2,000 pounds.

Mirkwood Horses in the Third Age Onward
Tumblr media
The Arrochs thrived as a breed in the Woodland Realm from TA 120 to about TA 2600, enduring even when the Elvenking's lands grew increasingly infested by the darkness of Dol Guldur.
However, with the succeeding losses of the three eldest Princes--Mirion, Arvellas, and most especially Turhir, the Arrochs gradually stopped breeding.
Turhir's final horse was the last known Arroch to survive. After its death, the breed seemingly became extinct despite the best efforts of Prince Gelir to preserve their line.
By TA 2600, only the native Greenwood horses remained to serve what was left of the royal family and the realm's limited mounted cavalry.
By the time of the War of the Ring, the Arrochs (like many things in the Woodland Realm's long history) were thought by most people in Middle-earth to be merely a myth.

Hello! I am currently working on a short story about fairies. Do you have any tips for creating good character names? For both fantasy and humanoid characters. Thanks! <3
Create fantasy character names
Hello everyone, it's been a while since we last met! I apologize for neglecting the blog during this time. I had a lot of tasks to complete during the past academic year, which made it impossible for me to continue maintaining the blog. However, now that summer has arrived, I'm back!
Creating character names for a fantasy short story, especially for fairies and humanoid characters, can be an exciting creative process. Here are some tips to help you come up with good character names:
Tip 1: Consider name meanings
Research the meanings behind names or words related to your character's traits, backstory, or role in the story. Is your character mischievous, wise, or courageous? Is she/ he a fairy, an elf, or human? Choose names with meanings that align with your character's essence. For example, a fairy character with healing abilities could be named Althea, meaning "healing" in Greek.
Tumblr media
Tip 2: Consider the setting and culture
Think about the world in which your story takes place. Consider the culture (folklore, mythology, etc.), geography, and time period of your fantasy realm for inspiration. Let these elements influence the naming conventions and styles. You can also adapt or modify existing names or use them as a starting point. For example, a Nordic-inspired setting might feature names like Bjorn or Astrid, while a magical realm could have names like Elara or Orion.
And remember, you should avoid names that are too modern or that don't fit the setting or time period of your story. This helps maintain the immersive quality of your fantasy realm.
Tumblr media
Tip 3: Word association and connotations
tart by brainstorming words or concepts associated with your character's personality, role, or attributes. Play around with the sounds and meanings of those words to create unique names. For instance, if your character is strong and courageous, you might combine words like "valor" or "brave" to create a name like Valoran or Bravon.
Tumblr media
Tip 4: Experiment with phonetics and letters
Fantasy character names often have a distinct and memorable sound. Play with different combinations of vowels and consonants to create names that are sonically pleasing. You can also experiment with accents, apostrophes, or unique letter combinations to add flair. However, be careful not to make the names too difficult to pronounce or remember, as they may distract readers.
Tumblr media
Tip 5: Naming patterns and traditions
How about creating naming patterns or traditions within your fantasy world? Certain cultures or species might have specific naming customs or preferences. For example, elves might have melodic and nature-inspired names, while dwarves might have names reflecting their craftsmanship or lineage. If you have multiple fairy or humanoid characters in your story, you can also develop a consistent naming system specific to the world you've created (for example: Hunter x Hunter). It could involve specific prefixes, suffixes, or naming conventions that reflect the culture or species of your characters.
Tumblr media
Tip 6: Keep a list and brainstorm
Maintain a running list of name ideas as you brainstorm. Jot down any interesting names or word combinations that come to mind, even if they don't immediately fit a specific character. This list can serve as a resource for future stories or characters. You can also read other fantasy books or stories to gather inspiration for character names. Analyze how other authors have created names that reflect their characters' personalities, species, or world-building.
Tumblr media
The most important thing is embracing your creativity, have fun with the process, and strive to choose names that are both memorable and meaningful for your fairy and humanoid characters in your short story.

>> Notes: At this time, Coen City is 90% secure. WoB irregular political militia units continue to operate under disguise within the city. To this end, I am tasking the remnants of CAMG with securing the city in detail. This will leave them indisposed for further offensive action, but the losses sustained are too great for them to be fully combat effective in open combat. Once the local dropport is secured, fresh personnel and supplies can be made available to them.
TOUCHDOWN's 3rd wave, led by the 2nd Canopian Fusiliers, will be arriving within three days. That should prove to be... Interesting. Given the history of that particular unit.
Once the 3rd wave is on the ground, and the local forts and airbase that been taken, I will rotate the 1st and 2nd wave out of combat for at least several days, to allow rest, repair, and recuperation.

Monster Spotlight: Valkyrie
Tumblr media
CR 12
Chaotic Neutral Medium Outsider
Bestiary 3, pg. 277 (pic from 2e Bestiary 3, pg. 281)
Angelic servants of battle itself, the Valkyrie are born fully formed within the Maelstrom from the souls of soldiers who wish beyond all wishes to keep fighting. While most Valkyries can be found in the service of various Chaotic deities--typically, but not limited to, gods of war, valor, and courage--many instead act as independent agents or even cosmic warriors for hire, gifting their skills to anyone who can pay their strange prices. Valkyrie are responsible for gathering souls worthy of being transformed into Einherjar, plucking them from battlefields all over the Great Beyond to bring them into the Maelstrom, baptizing them in the chaos to transform them into immortal, nigh-invincible soldiers.
To this end, Valkyrie can Plane Shift themselves at will, taking with them only their gear and whatever mount they happen to be astride (typically some variety of fantastic steed, like a pegasus or the centipede-esque sleipnir). They instinctively seek out battles, typically shortly after they’re over... but they’re no strangers to joining battles that are still in progress. Able to cast both Aid and Death Ward at will to make their allies or themselves fearless and immune to death effects, Valkyrie practically exist to arrive from above with a dramatic spear thrust downwards into a huge monster, turning the tide of battle. They can even provide their own dramatic background, able to Call Lightning Storms 3/day!
Equipped with a permanent Deathwatch, Valkyrie take stock of the allies they’ve chosen, deciding which deserve to live and fight another day and which shall accompany them to Valhalla the Maelstrom. Those who still show a drive to grow into ever more powerful warriors are graced with a Heal to restore them to peak condition, or even a Breath of Life if they perish before their mission is completed. To those whose lives have come to a close, a Valkyrie can Choose the Slain, drawing the soul of a willing creature into their weapons to later transport them to the Maelstrom to transform them into Einherji. This power only works on a willing creature; an eternity as a deathless warrior is one that must be chosen. There’s no limit to the number of souls a Valkyrie can transport at once, but choosing the slain only works on a fresh body, and thus they can use Gentle Repose at will to preserve the freshly-fallen until after the battle is done and there are no further enemies.
But how do they get rid of said enemies? Mostly, a lot of charge attacks. Though they’re expert fliers, Valkyrie are built to have steeds beneath them, their specific feats--namely Ride-By Attack and especially Spirited Charge--making them extremely dangerous when they’re mounted, and as such even if their current mount is killed or otherwise incapacitated, a Valkyrie can summon a Sleipnir to their side 1/day. As CR 11 creatures that are extremely fast and all-terrain with a flurry of natural attacks and Prismatic Spray 3/day, the summoned steed is dangerous enough on its own... but once the angel of battle hops on, things get so much worse.
Valkyrie who aren’t blasting foes with their called lightning (5d6 Electricity damage) mainly use +2 Returning Spears, able to make up to four attacks a round (five if they’re under the effects of their 3/day Divine Power) in melee, or one attack a round from a range, each dealing 1d8+8 damage (1d8+12 under Divine Power) which triples on a critical hit. Decent! But nowhere near as scary as it can be. I don’t mean their Power Attack or Vital Strike, mind, though those certainly factor in; I mean Spirited Charge. This delightful little feat doubles damage done with their weapons during a mounted charge, which is tripled AGAIN if that damage is a critical hit. An especially lucky Valkyrie may deal upwards to 96 damage in a single full-round action (120 under Divine Power), which is a hell of an opening act! And because their summoned Sleipnir has Air Walk constantly, they can easily skitter right back into the air and charge into the next enemy next round.
However, ‘enemy’ can be subjective; you may notice that they’re Chaotic Neutral. Good and Evil don’t matter to them, so it’s a complete coin toss on whether or not they’ll fight for OR against Lord Deathmonger von Dogstomper in the climactic assault on his Kingdom of Vilebad. It can be a little disheartening for Good-aligned rebels against a wildly evil force to see literal angels descend from above and begin massacring them, one would assume.
You can read more about them here.

By Chance, Meeting a Nausicaa
nausicaa, your name like confetti in full color rang out celebratory, long before your birth! -- in devotion to the right and wrong and messy beauty of all that crawls or walks or slithers or waddles or swims here on our earth! certainly, I recall the greeks lay claim… but miyazaki announced by the name nausicaa the oncoming age of raucous joy; even evolving in musical tradition, improvised a meaning: admiration for moebius whose pen issued, like darwin, his finches first apprised, sketches of such wonders as spark the artists of generations, in that ark woven of love and given gentle eyes came Nausicaa arcing seas, realized all in delight -- aspiring like torchlight held aloft a little ahead -- a beacon for the alien and the feared, greeting each, and unflinching, bade sunrise bless with rays this shy congregation of dirty upturned faces. Unyielding her revelation: a guileless compassion which spanned instantly ocean-wide, valorizing the humble, the timid -- sun that gilded the stranger in glory -- for the curious she hid a scientist's hope by roadsides, murky holes, hollows; the friendless insect, the spider, the worm follow their roles. fists unclosed, we gave succor, and woods flushed as fresh and green as under any rain. an honor bestowed, returned in kind, gave challenge to old greek nausicaa, delivered from the tableaus of urns and echoes. astride the human soul burst forth Colossus in allegory -- so overfull with marveling was Moebius, his next child restored the name of Nausicaa, in innocence, may her pride flourish, in forests enshrined, a voice of welcome, laughter-wreathed reminder: where the merciful brave this world, there walk the divine; beyond animation is a second lesson: kindness brooks no bounds to its territory. in my mind no name lives on lips today with laurels to match Nausicaa, and the nearest behind cannot supply a greater story.

Ma i Paesi felici lo sono davvero?
Tumblr media
Almeno a livello europeo. Poco superiore in Norvegia (11,8 su 100mila).
Quasi, appunto.
