actually, i'm tired of being nice about this.
for the past week, a terrible cold front has been affecting different parts of spain, especially valencia, where +200 people have died and +2000 are still missing.
for the past week, people have been trying to find ways to help those affected, either by going to the affected areas to help or by donating food, clothes and other resources, even though it keeps raining.
for the past couple of days, i've received daily emergency alarms on my phone telling me to stay at home because of the risk of flood, and today schools and universities have closed to avoid unnecessary risks
people are losing power, their cars, their homes, their loved ones, streets are flooded and filled with mud. this morning the storm was so strong here that the power went out in my entire building and in a lot of areas of the city. trains aren't working, some subway stations are flooded, i have been hearing sirens all day and thinking that i'm lucky for getting to stay in the safety of my home
and then i go online, especially on tumblr, and… nothing. nobody is talking about it, nobody is sharing fundraisers. i only see spaniards talking about it, and even then, most posts don't reach 400 notes.
this is one of the clearest signs of climate change we've seen recently, why is nobody talking about it? it seems like tragedies are only tragedies when they happen in a small handful of countries, and we are, unfortunately, not one of them. but we're more than a vacation destination, we're more than a place with good weather and cheap alcohol. we people deserve protection and safety. we deserve more than global silence

the valencia family, windenburg
the valencia’s are from old money, meaning money has been in their family for generations. however, felipe & amelie are very hardworking and want to instil this trait in their children.
felipe works as an attorney, and amelie as a luxury fashion designer. their oldest son raphael (19), is in his 1st year of uni studying communications, but he keeps in close contact with his family. meanwhile their second child fleur (16) is in her 2nd year of highschool, and finally their youngest child delphine (9) is still in elementary school.

It's devastating what has happened in Valencia knowing some of it at least could have been prevented. People didn't receive an alert until it was practically already happening, they were coming home from work or still at work, there are stories of people receiving the alert while literally clinging onto trees and surrounded by water. there are so many horrific stories coming out, and there's no transparency from the govt or the media who don't seem to be reporting the whole truth. the official death toll is at 202 but it's likely to be much, much higher than that, there are over a thousand people missing... meanwhile people being arrested for stealing food from supermarkets. It's sickening, I can't get my head around it

Hello Tumbrl Comunity.
I'm from Valencia, Spain and my cousin Elena just created this to ask for some help to our families.
About a week ago a torrential rain fell in Valencia and a lot of villages are afected, specialy Paiporta. All my family is from there and some friends too. Some aunts, cousins and friends have lost their houses, cars, belongings and even family members and pets.
He government is not helping at all, they don't send any help or only a little and a lot of people die because their endless incompetence. They are laying about the numbers of dead people to pretend they did their work right, but they didn't send the emergency warning until HOURS late and the emergency teams weren't able to work HOURS after the tragedy started. They are accussing people of forcing themselves in flooded supermarkets to search for food and higiene suplies and calling them thief when they sre doing NOTHING.
More than a week have passed and the streets still dirty, floaded and full of trash, people still missing...
In other hand, THANK YOU, THAN YOU TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS that came from everywhere walking kilometers to help to cleand and give supplies to people in need.
If you guys can give my family and friends some help, we would really apreciated. ANY help is welcome ❤️❤️❤️

VALENCIA RESOURCES!!!
Hello dear readers
Usually I like to keep my tumblr somewhat fun and whimsical but I have to make a call for you all to share any resources available to aid people in Valencia rn.
An intense storm (we call it a DANA) hit Valencia and flooded it almost entirely. People have died, and their bodies have been dragged for long stretches because of the flooding. There's no food, lights have gone out, the police are not helping and instead are arresting people for looting in supermarkets just so they can get something to eat or feed their families. The situation is horrible, and I really would like people to share any resources, doesn't matter if they're personal gofundmes, places to donate money or food if you're nearby, anything you guys need to share can be shared in this post, and if you don't have anything to share make sure to reshare this post and the reblogs.
Let's help the people in Valencia. Let's do what the fucking police aren't doing and aid them in their moment of most need.
Also PSA: Some of the groups that have organized food donations and stuff have been called out for neonazi behaviour. PLS check what type of groups you share in comments and in reblogs. Aid should be for anyone regardless of skin color or any other factors. NO NEONAZIS ALLOWED!! HELP FOR ALL!

A Neanderthal child with Down’s syndrome survived until at least the age of six, according to a new study whose findings hint at compassionate caregiving among the extinct, archaic human species.
Recent examination of a human fossil unearthed at the Cova Negra archaeological site in the Spanish province of Valencia found traits in the inner-ear anatomy which indicated Down syndrome, in the earliest-known evidence of the genetic condition.
The fossil, which preserves the complete inner-ear anatomy, was excavated in 1989 but its significance was not recognised until recently. It is a fragment of one of the two temporal bones – the right one – that help form the sides and base of the skull, protecting the brain and surrounding the ear canal.
While the researchers cannot be certain whether the fossil was that of a girl or a boy, they have nicknamed the Neanderthal child “Tina”.
Tina’s combination of inner-ear abnormalities is known only in people with Down’s syndrome.
“The pathology which this individual suffered resulted in highly disabling symptoms, including, at the very least, complete deafness, severe vertigo attacks and an inability to maintain balance,” said Mercedes Conde-Valverde, a palaeoanthropologist at the University of Alcalá in Spain, lead author of the study, published in the journal Science Advances.
“Given these symptoms, it is highly unlikely that the mother alone could have provided all the necessary care while also attending to her own needs. Therefore, for Tina to have survived for at least six years, the group must have continuously assisted the mother, either by relieving her in the care of the child, helping with her daily tasks, or both,” Conde-Valverde added.
Among other pathologies, there were abnormalities in the semicircular canals – three small tubes that govern balance and sense head position – and a reduction in the size of the cochlea, the part of the inner ear involved in hearing.
The fossil’s precise age has not been determined, but Conde-Valverde noted that the presence of Neanderthals at the Cova Negra site has been dated to between 273,000 and 146,000 years ago.
Homo neanderthalensis, as Neanderthals are formally called, were more robustly built than Homo sapiens and had larger brows. They lived from about 430,000 years ago to roughly 40,000 years ago. Previous research has shown that Neanderthals were intelligent, and created art, pigments, symbolic objects and perhaps a spoken language, as well as utilising complex group hunting methods.
They disappeared relatively soon after our species spread into their territory.
Previous evidence of Neanderthals caring for their sick and injured prompted a debate over whether this was motivated merely by expectations of reciprocal behaviour or by genuine compassion.
“For decades, it has been known that Neanderthals cared for and looked after their vulnerable companions,” Conde-Valverde said. “However, all known cases of care involved adult individuals, leading some scientists to believe that this behaviour was not genuine altruism but merely an exchange of assistance between equals.
“What was not known until now was a case of an individual who had received extra-maternal care from birth, even though the individual could not reciprocate. The discovery of the Cova Negra fossil supports the existence of true altruism among Neanderthals.”
Archaeological evidence at Cova Negra indicates the site was occupied for short periods at a time by small groups of Neanderthals – hunter-gatherers who roamed the landscape in search of food and other resources. Tina’s age at death, based on the maturation state of certain inner-ear structures, shows unusual longevity for a child in such circumstances with a condition known for intellectual disability and developmental delays.
“The survival of this child, beyond the period of breastfeeding, implies group caregiving, probably more extended than parental caregiving, typical of a highly collaborative social context among the members of the group. Otherwise, it is very difficult to explain the survival of this individual up to the age of six years,” said Valentín Villaverde, a co-author of the study and an emeritus professor of prehistory at the University of Valencia.
Conde-Valverde said: “The discovery of Tina represents the oldest known case of Down’s syndrome and demonstrates that the diversity observed in modern humans was already present in prehistoric times. This finding ensures that the story of human evolution includes us all.”
