RFK Jr. to head newly formed Department of Disease Efficiency
We mistakenly thought that finding a dead mouse in your frozen ravioli dinner was a failure.
Tumblr media
WaPo satirist Alexandra Petri slices and dices Trump's new HHS appointment of RFK, Jr. This is a gift🎁link, so you can read the entire article. I suppose it is better to laugh at the absurdity of it all than to cry.🤷🏻‍♀️ Below are some excerpts. Enjoy! 😁
Well, President-elect Donald Trump has picked Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the new head of the Department of Health and Human Services. “He wants to do some things and we’re going to let him go to it,” Trump said. “Go have a good time, Bobby.” Everyone who is an HHS employee and is not the measles virus: You are on notice! We’re taking this department in a new direction! Measles, stand back and stand by. It’s about to be your time. We’re doing our best to give the people what they want. For many years we thought what they wanted was clean drinking water, safe and tested vaccines to drive down deaths from childhood diseases, and food that is produced in sanitary conditions so the people who eat it don’t get sick. But we were wrong, and the change starts now. Similarly, we mistakenly thought that finding a dead mouse in your frozen ravioli dinner was a shock. Now, we know better. It’s a surprise! People love surprises. People love danger! Our ancestors didn’t stare down death every time they went out to hunt and eat food that had not been subject to Food and Drug Administration inspection so we wouldn’t have to stare down death every day as we went out to buy food that has not been subject to FDA inspection. You want to consume a can of beans and live? TOUGH LUCK! THIS IS DONALD TRUMP’S AMERICA! In light of this, and of the nomination of RFK Jr. as our leader, we at the Department of Health and Human Services are announcing a rebrand as the Department of Disease Efficiency. Given our new mandate to root out expertise wherever it might lurk and replace it with Something That Came To RFK Jr. In A Dream Once, we felt it was proper to release “Health” and “Human Services” back into the wild, where maybe RFK Jr. can hunt them down with his falcon and eat them before they have undergone an FDA inspection. Look, most Americans are not equipped to test food safety or vaccine safety on their own. And that’s because, unwisely, we have delegated these tasks to the FDA. It’s time we gave them back to the people. Every citizen should learn to inspect his own meat, like the Founders did. George Washington (who apparently only had one real tooth left at the end of his life) did not drink fluoridated water. Abraham Lincoln (one of whose children actually made it to adulthood!) never gave his children safe, routine childhood vaccinations. Franklin D. Roosevelt (who had polio) had polio. It’s time we went back to that. Now is not the time to rest on our laurels. Now is the time to throw our laurels away. We’re going to think outside the box. For too long, our ideas have been limited to “things medical professionals recommend” and we have mistakenly viewed each death as a disgrace and failure. Now, it’s time to abandon that hidebound, old-fashioned thinking. Maybe disease is an ally, not an enemy! Maybe we can attract a new consumer, someone who is as excited as RFK Jr. is to wonder if water is turning children gay. [...] Finally, we can declare victory in the long, bitter war against lifesaving human innovations like pasteurization and the polio vaccine! I don’t know why we want to declare victory in this war, but I guess it’s what we’re doing.

A colleague of anti-vaxxing extremist RFK Jr. named Aaron Siri has asked the FDA to revoke approval for the 1950s polio vaccine which has likely prevented millions of Americans from getting polio.
In the years before the vaccine, many people were paralyzed or even killed by the virus. President Franklin Roosevelt, afflicted at age 39 in 1921, is probably the most famous victim of the disease.
RFK Jr. and his wacko conspiracy buddies aren't content just to bring back polio. They are also eager to take away your tetanus, diphtheria, and hepatitis A vaccines.
RFJ Jr. is just one of the dangerously unqualified nominees Donald Trump has put forth. If you wanted to destroy America, you could not find more evil people to put in high level positions to accomplish that.
On a practical note, make sure you are caught up with all your immunizations by January 20th. And if you don't live too far from Canada or Mexico, make sure you have a US passport card so that you can easily hop across the border to get vaccines if another Trump pandemic threatens the US.

Wanna know how bad polio is?
Paul Alexander contracted polio when he was 8, just before the polio vaccine became available. His infection was about the worst case of polio you can get without dying. He died early this year but spent most of the past 70 years encased in what is known as an iron lung.
‘Polio Paul,’ who spent most of the past 70 years in an iron lung, dies at 78

Elliot Pfebve, 55, is the first patient in England treated with a personalized vaccine for bowel cancer at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Thousands more patients will receive the experimental vaccine, not as a cure but to target remaining cancer cells after treatment.
The NHS will match patients to clinical trials for their specific tumors via the Cancer Vaccine Launch Pad, using mRNA technology to train immune systems to combat cancer cells.

Sara Boboltz at HuffPost:
President-elect Donald Trump would not denounce the false conspiracy theory that childhood vaccines have caused autism rates to rise, saying instead that he would listen to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the anti-vaccine advocate he wants to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. “The autism rate is at a level that nobody ever believed possible. If you look at things that are happening, there’s something causing it,” Trump told a reporter for Time Magazine. The lengthy interview was published Thursday as the magazine named Trump its “Person of the Year,” a title that has gone to a wide variety of public figures since the early 20th century. At one point in the interview, Trump was asked point-blank whether he would push back against Kennedy were he to try to end federal funding for childhood vaccinations. “We’re going to have a big discussion,” Trump replied. But then he immediately brought up autism, saying “something” must be causing higher rates. Numerous studies have debunked a link between autism and vaccines. Experts believe part of the rise in autism diagnoses can be attributed to improvements in doctors’ ability to identify it.
When being interviewed by Time, Donald Trump dodged the question on whether he would denounce the debunked link of vaccines “causing” autism, saying that he would instead defer to anti-vaxxer extremist Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

When to See a Wound Care Specialist: Knowing the Right Time for Treatment
Wounds are a normal part of life, whether due to accidents, surgery, or health issues. While many wounds heal by themselves with primary care, some need special treatment to heal correctly and prevent problems. Knowing when to see a wound care specialist is essential for the best recovery.
In this blog, you'll discover the signs that it might be time to consult a wound care specialist. Spotting these signs early can significantly improve your healing and overall health.
Wound healing happens in a few stages:
Hemostasis: This is the first stage where the body stops bleeding by forming a clot at the wound site.
Inflammation: In this stage, the body sends white blood cells to the wound to fight any infection and start the healing process.
Proliferation: New tissue and blood vessels begin to form to replace the damaged ones.
Maturation: This final stage is when the wound closes completely, and the new tissue becomes stronger.
Typical Healing Time Frames
Cuts and Scrapes: These usually heal within a few days to a week.
Deeper Wounds or Surgical Incisions: These can take weeks to months to heal, depending on how serious they are and how well they're cared for. Knowing these stages and how long wounds typically take to heal can help you understand what's normal and when you might need to see a specialist for further care.
Signs a Wound Requires Specialist Attention
Non-Healing Wounds: If a wound isn't healing within 2-3 weeks, it may be considered non-healing. This includes wounds that remain open, haven't gotten smaller, or still bleed or ooze.
Signs of Infection: Be alert for redness, swelling, pus, more pain, or fever. These signs suggest the wound might be infected and need immediate medical care.
Chronic Wounds: Wounds like diabetic ulcers or pressure sores are likely to become chronic and require special treatment to avoid complications.
Changes in Wound Appearance: If the wound changes color, becomes darker, or grows in size, it's essential to see a specialist. These changes can indicate more severe problems that need expert care.
Common Conditions Treated by Wound Care Specialists
Diabetic Foot Ulcers: These are open sores that usually appear on the feet of people with diabetes. Due to poor circulation, they heal slowly and need special care to prevent infections and other complications.
Venous Ulcers: These wounds develop on the legs because of poor blood flow in the veins. They are often painful and require specific treatments to heal properly.
Pressure Ulcers: Also known as bedsores, these occur in areas where the skin is under constant pressure, usually in people who are bedridden. Proper management is essential to prevent serious infections.
Surgical Wounds: After surgery, wounds need close monitoring to ensure they heal properly and don't get infected.
Traumatic Wounds: Injuries from accidents or violence, like cuts or puncture wounds, may need specialized care to heal without complications.
Benefits of Early Specialist Intervention
Preventing Complications: Seeing a wound care specialist early can help prevent minor issues from turning into serious problems like infections or tissue damage.
Enhanced Healing Techniques: Specialists use advanced treatments, such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy, where patients breathe pure oxygen in a pressurized environment. This method helps speed up healing and improve tissue repair.
Personalized Treatment Plans: Wound care specialists create customized treatment plans based on each patient's unique needs, considering the type and location of the wound, as well as any underlying health conditions. This personalized approach ensures the best possible care and recovery.
How to Choose a Wound Care Specialist
Criteria for Selection: Certifications and Training: Make sure the specialist has the proper credentials and certifications in wound care.
Experience: Look for a specialist who has plenty of experience treating the specific type of wound you have.
Patient Reviews: Read reviews from other patients to get an idea of the quality of care and their satisfaction with the treatment they received.
Importance of Multidisciplinary Teams: Wound care frequently requires a team approach, including doctors, nurses, nutritionists, and therapists. This multidisciplinary team ensures comprehensive care by addressing all aspects of healing and recovery, providing a more complete and effective treatment plan for the patient.
Conclusion
It's important to know when to see a wound care specialist to ensure proper healing and prevent complications. Understanding the healing stages, identifying when specialist care is needed, and recognizing the benefits of early intervention can help you make better health choices. Choosing a qualified specialist and considering a multidisciplinary team can provide personalized and thorough care. Don't wait to seek specialist care; timely attention can significantly improve your recovery and overall health

Taking a break from my usual fandom posting to tell y'all to GET YOUR FLU SHOTS.
I am typing this with one arm double the size of the other, tucked up close by my body, because of the flu shot. I am allergic to it. Every year since I was 4, the flu shot has made me swell up near the injection site for days, sometimes even as long as two weeks. It looks like there's an egg under my skin, and I can feel the fluid moving when I walk.
And y'know what?
I STILL GET THE SHOT.
Because I would rather be in pain than spread the flu. Because there are people in my community who could die if they got the flu. And getting the vaccine is a simple precaution I can take to reduce their risk of getting the flu. I do not want their death (or life-threatening illness, or long-lasting complications, or even just unpleasant sickness) on my conscience.
Vaccines work. When everyone gets them, the herd immunity can protect those whose vaccines weren't as effective, or those who can't get a vaccine (like those with severe egg allergies).
Unless you will go into anaphylactic shock from a flu shot, or your doctor has told you not to get it, you should go get your shot. It protects you, and it protects the vulnerable people around you.
At least in the US, the flu shot is offered for FREE at many large supermarkets (ie Kroger) and pharmacies (ie CVS), in addition to clinics and vaccination drives run by organizations near you. For more information or if you don't live in the US, you can check with your county/other local government's website. They should have a page directing you to places to get vaccinations.
