DO YOU THINK ROSS NAMES HIS KNIVES. i think yassen would be a little averse to the whole naming thing considering hunter told him not to refer to his victims by names because it made them human. i feel like he would internalize that and think of his guns as mere weapons, as convenience, as tools and nothing more but still i'm sort of curious because some part of me also thinks he could name them. idk. he was petty enough to become an assassin just to spite him and the fact that he has a fav gun??? [it was a beretta right?] but this is also somewhat a useful tip. idkkkk im sleepy and feeling rambly and im making it your problem. also i bet gordon gives them the goofiest or the most poetic names. no in between. man's got a sense of humour but also has that shitton of history ping-ponging [heh] around in his head. anyways i think i'll go & try to catch some sleep. byeee <3

I think the only sentimental thing Yassen might have is the Fer de Lance, and that's one hundred percent headcanon, given that she might as well be a charter (or SCORPIA-owned) based on the information we got on her in Eagle Strike (look, I like ships, don't ship-shame!). I just really like the idea of Yassen having one thing that is his, and the unwelcoming looks of her, the tinted glass in the windows, and the name all seem like something he'd like. Everything else, especially his weapons, I think he has a very pragmatic approach to. They're something to be used and discarded if necessary, chosen based on the needs of the operation, and little else.

… except the Grach. I HAVE OPINIONS ON THIS ONE.

So. SO. Eagle Strike, page 49 in my version (Walker Books 2015 edition, from the box set, so who knows what the line originally said, but I've only ever seen the Grach referenced in fandom): "The gun was a Grach MP-443, black, with a short muzzle and a ribbed stock. It was Russian, of course, new army issue."

This is yet another enty in "Why Timelines Are, Like, Vibes Man", the ongoing saga by Ahorz.

The Grach MP-443 (wiki link) was developed in the nineties but didn't enter service until 2003, and while it was adopted as the standard sidearm, this did by no means happen immediately. It took YEARS for mass production to really start. For years after, there were - and still are - other Russian guns that were in far more common use and much easier to get a hold of for Yassen, who would presumably want to replace his gun fairly regularly to avoid inconvenient evidence.

Ignoring the timeline issue of exactly what year the books are set in (and whether the Grach was even in actual production by then), it seems like a very deliberate choice by Yassen. The Grach is not the best gun out there. It's not the most reliable, not the easiest one to find, not the most common (and more anonymous). It was, however, the new standard sidearm for the Russian military - the country that took everything from Yassen - and going out of his way to choose a weapon that most of the Russian military still hadn't been issued, one after the other to discard of when they became evidence, seems just like the sort of deliberately petty move he would like. A subtle 'fuck you' to his former home.

ALSO. I agree, Ross absolutely names his favourite knives. He'll rant about the bad ones if you get him going, but his favourite, most perfect knives, those get the adoring names. He's so the type to have an original V-42 stiletto in beautiful condition that he's named Rose.

Got my Boker V-42 today. Came with some extra goodies!

Paige boarded the Nevermore after what seemed like a lifetime away. She had needed the break, sure, but when they parted it felt like the universe slowed down considerably. Even during Christmas, a time she should have felt quite overjoyed, she found her thoughts drifting back.

So when she found herself back, she immediately gave V the hand wrapped gift. “I’ve been thinking.. never a good idea, but back on Earth you get enough time to do it.. well, maybe you should open your gift first.”

Inside, she’ll find an old dagger, a V-42 Stiletto military issue, and a sheath. They both had seen the wears of time, but otherwise were in decent condition.

“It’s a World War 2 dagger. And before you ask, no, it’s not like from my family or anything. I tracked it down especially for you. Took me a while, cost me a bit, but luckily someone’s been making sure I’m taken care of.” She figured V could figure out how lethal the dagger actually was, how it was mostly a stabbing weapon. The thumb groove, for slashing, and the pommel for hitting.

“Probably don’t have to tell you that a stiletto dagger was the Italian assassin’s preferred weapon. But it was also a Knight’s secondary weapon. And it’s from my home, so it’s got some personal connection to me. Thought about giving it a name, but the Army already did. V-42. Literally has your name on it.”

“I doubt you’d want to use it, but still.. Merry Christmas, V. And it’s nice to see you again.”

V had landed in Rosewood after what felt like eons ago and it was Christmas - pure luck on that bit. Still, she was happy that she got there at all. She had presents, decorated around the console as a makeshift christmas tree.

Though, when she saw Paige come inside, her ship seemed to hum happily as V grinned, almost not noticing the present in the other woman's hands.

"Good idea?" She asked out of curiosity as she started to open it and then her face lit up like a child in a toy store. She was going to ask but, the other seemed to have read her mind. V unsheath the dagger, listening to Paige describing it as well as - from what it sounded like to V - how the other acquired it. V seemed to admire the weapon, almost hypnotised by it.

It felt good in her hands, only chuckling at the name it was given before V forced herself to put the dagger back.

 “Oh, I'll find a use for her.” She pointed out to Paige but, also as a reminder to herself.

V's grin turned into a full-on smile, “I love it, Paige. And you. Happy Christmas.”. A thought came to her then before her eyes skimmed through the glittering, wrapped, bow-ed boxes. "Oh, I have your present too. Well, presents. Don't worry, they can fit through the doors."

here is a long ago conversation about talented amateurs, between me and a much better writer

if it’s of interest to anybody, here’s a long ago conversation I had with a very dear friend (and the best writer I know), about this story and the shape of it. it probably would’ve taken place around November of 2018, which is wild to remember. My daughter was 3. I was in the middle of moving house. TAG still hadn’t aired S3. I came to know so much about this story that it’s surprising to remember that I didn’t know when I wrote the first chapter that it even WAS a first chapter.

“Well, if it helps, it was well after midnight before anything of consequence actually happened.” Penelope tilts her head slightly (adorably), and seems bemused by the concept. “But then, it does beg the question—is that something she would consider a gift?”

Gordon shrugs. “There’s a reason Grandma rhymes with drama.”

On the topic of drama, her answering sigh is exaggerated, but tolerant. “Yes, because you’re an American and you pronounce everything incorrectly.” Kate 10:08 pm lol penny but seriously, i LOVE this and i love the direction it’s going and i love everything i know about the overall shakeup for the family Prelude 10:09 pm oh yes I’m very excited Kate 10:09 pm i can’t describe to you how excited i am for all of this!!!
