;; @needlenxggin || Plotted Starter featuring Knives Regression!AU.
It was dark and cold at first. Something about the environment around him felt off. “Vash..?” he called out in the darkness, the panic settling in his chest. He was alone, and it scared him. “Vash!? Rem?!” he called out, looking around in this dark voice. The young Independent whipped and turned, but there was nothing in any direction.
The panic only grew, bubbling inside of him. Normally, Nai was fairly level-headed, but right now it was far too overwhelming. There was this strange feeling, almost like drowning. He gripped at his head, struggling to shake off this uncomfortable feeling he had.
“VASH!” The young Independent shot up suddenly, his breathing ragged as his surroundings hit him. He didn’t recognize the room he was in. It wasn’t familiar to him. Was this on the ship? Where were Vash and Rem? His breathing slowed a little as he saw the large tank filled with a multitude of Plants all together. “...” And then he looked around. All over the floor of this room were thick, black roots. They spanned the room and traveled well outside of it. In the center of the room was some sort of console. It looked almost like the ones he’d see Rem use on the ship.
Tumblr media
Nai didn’t feel good. His head ached and he felt tired, but he couldn’t sleep. Not yet. He had to find Vash and Rem. He hadn’t even noticed the other in the room, far too focus on himself. That was until he went to stand up. The tall figure was off-putting. It was someone he didn’t immediately recognize. Had someone woken from one of the Pods?
“W-Who are you?!” he asked, glaring at the tall figure wearily.
He would not recognize Vash at first, but Vash most certainly would recognize this form. His brother sat before him, appearing as his younger self. Unlike the dreams that Vash had been tormented with though, this one was real.

He had been wandering for a while in the desert. So much so that he was tired. He couldn’t remember the last time he felt so tired. He was tired before he started walking, and he was even more tired now.
He didn’t recognize her name from the logs of those in cryo sleep on the ship. Maybe she was on another ship? Though, she also didn’t wear any of the typical clothes. He still wasn’t sure what happened.
Tumblr media
Nai was still weary about this person, but she was offering him water. He gave her a nod, even if he didn’t really need to drink. He had to blend in. “I...I don’t know...” There were towns? Where were they if there were towns? “I woke up and I was alone...” He couldn’t remember, and it hurt to think about.
@adventures-written from this
Well fair enough he wouldn't trust her, that was pretty smart. Someone had taught the kid that much at least, so she stayed where she was, crouched down to his eye level, not making any moves towards him. It definitely wasn't safe to leave him out here...
"I'm Erin. I'm a musician. I was travelling to the next town...is that where you're going?" Where were his parents? Or family or caravan or...anything? Who'd just leave a kid out in the desert like this on his own? Had they been attacked? Had they passed away?

Nai looked up when he heard a sound, something coming. Nervously, he looked over and spotted the stranger. His instinct told him to run, Rem’s voice whispering in the back of his head that he had to be careful right now. Cautious, but curious, he let her approach.
“...” He shook his head, “No..I’m just...” he glanced around at the sand around him, frowning. “I’m looking for my brother. And...And Rem.”

Where was Vash? And Rem? What was this place? A desert wasteland, sand as far as the eye could see in every direction. And he was alone. “VAAASSHHH!!” he called out loudly, growing tired from yelling. His hope for finding his brother wavered. “Where are you..? Where am I...?”

Nai regression AU; July goes badly
v;; forgotten pieces of a shattered mind (side; knives millions)
It was all setup to be the perfect rebirth for his brother. That was the plan; Save his brother, save the Plants, destroy humanity. Unfortunately for Knives, the plan did not go quite as expected. Somewhere caught in the mix of it all, he had used too much of his own power. In the aftermath, Millions Knives was not his former self. He was regressed, thrown back in time like some cruel irony. He was a child, lost and afraid, without his memories. He is aware of his brother, Vash, and he knows of Rem, but any memories he has of the crash, of being on this planet, of the things he has done, are all gone. He is alone with nothing to do but fear.
(A verse in which Nai could have a second chance. Vash would still be older obviously, but I like the idea of Nai being able to be changed and have something happy for once....Verse items may change depending on what happens in Episode 12 of the Dub.)

;; @firsthumandisaster || Continued from here.
He watched Vash carefully, still unsure about this man. Although Nai did not possess his memories of recent events, he knew there was something wrong. After all, his first assumption had been the ship had crashed, but that did not appear to be the case. At least not recently.
Tumblr media
After wandering from the crater that was July, he had encountered this man who had taken him to a town. Offered him food and water -- Things Nai believed he didn’t need. It was quite a surreal experience, and he continued to wonder where Rem and Vash were. Not to mention there was something about this man that he couldn’t quite place.
“...What’s dangerous in a desert?”

He had been wandering for a few days...maybe a week now? He wasn’t quite sure as his concept of time was off. His memory was fuzzy and his head ached from whatever had happened. In Nai’s mind, he believed that the ships had only just crashed on this planet. He was not sure how it happened, but he had been on the search for Vash and Rem ever since he woke up. Part of him feared they were both dead, and that he was all alone on this wasteland of a planet.
The wreckage he wandered from was strange, looking like a destroyed ship, but also different in a way. He tried not to think too much about the destroyed area as he wandered away from it. He was hoping to find someone else alive, but the more he walked, the more he doubted he would.
Everything was so confusing. He couldn’t think straight. His mind was racing at the idea that his brother was dead. He did catch himself crying off and on over the few days of travel. Why was he even still walking? If Vash was dead, then what was the point?!
Suns beating down harshly on the planet, and Nai felt himself getting weaker with exhaustion. He barely heard a voice as he collapsed forward into the sand. That was it. This was the end. Maybe he’d see Vash again. He was starting to close his eyes, accept his fate, but the voice calling to him, the sound of footsteps, had him tiredly looking up. He didn’t recognize the stranger, but Tim would get no response as he blacked out from exhaustion.
@adventures-written
He hadn't thought it was possible to find himself somewhere worse than Pandora. He wasn't ever fond of space flight, so of course fate being the fickle bitch it was and having such a lovely way of hating specifically him allowed something to hit his ship. What? He had no clue, the beam of energy wasn't like anything he had ever experienced and he was just happy it hadn't been a direct hit... that said the damn engine gave out fast, he was just lucky he could emergency land on the nearest planet.
The place was a wasteland, he wasn't sure if any intelligent life would be here... Which was bad, no spare parts and little chance of fixing the engine without new parts... Well he was good as stranded. Gathering what little optimism he could in the situation Tim started to scout near his ship in hopes of finding a town or at least a source of water. This went on for a few days he would scout with skittles and return to the ship disappointed. Today he went a bit farther than normal, he found a few bugs which he avoided like the plague but otherwise... Nothing.
He was just about ready to turn back for the day giving up on any hope of finding anything useful when he noticed something moving. Well something wasn't right, it was more like a someone. His heart leapt at the idea of finding civilization on the planet finally. Maybe this person knew where a town was! He'd settle on a source of food or water if nothing else.
It didn't take much to urge him forward, the double hurrying towards the figure only to realize the closer he got that it was... a kid? His heart dropped as he scanned the horizon. "Hey! Hey are you alright?" Why was a kid wandering the desert? Where did they come from?

Note
Finding random strangers out and about was already odd, but this one had her crouched down like she was approaching a wounded cat. A little child...all alone. "Hi... hey. What's your name?"
Nai had been wandering the desert for sometime now. He felt tired, which was unusual for him. Normally he could go without rest, eating, or drinking, but right now he felt exhausted. As if he had been through a world of trouble, though, he remembered none of it. He woke up alone and relatively scared. Vash wasn't there, and neither was Rem. Everyone was just gone.
Tumblr media
He was hesitant at first when the stranger approached him. Icy blue eyes staring with distrust. He didn't recognize the stranger. He didn't know who she was or where she came from, but she was the first living person he had encountered. "...Who are you?" he asked, ignoring her question about his name. He wanted to be cautious, remembering Rem telling them they had to act human around other human's, even if he didn't need to eat or drink or anything of that nature.

;; I didn’t expect the child!Nai regression verse to be a hit...so naturally I need to make more appropriate icons for him as a kid. I half-assed mine because I thought they wouldn’t get much use.
Any excuse to icon him I guess.
But just...re-iconing their birthday with Rem is giving me feels...

Nai had woken up under a pile of rubble. Thankfully with the way it had collapsed, it more so kept him safe from being crushed than anything else. Carefully, he had crawled out of what would have otherwise been his tomb. Looking around, however, the environment was nothing like he expected.
He had no memories of this place. Nothing about Vash or his time as Millions Knives. The last thing he remember was being on the ship with Rem and Vash, and now he was here.
Had the ships crashed?
“Vaaashh?” he called out, looking around frantically for his brother. At least until he heard another voice. It was not one he recognized. Not Rem, not Vash. Was there another person that survived? “...” he cautiously moved towards the sound, eyeing the stranger wearily, “Who are you...?”
@adventures-written
The dust at the hole of what once was July had already long been settled. For the most part, save for the occasional wind-blown sands. What once was a great city had been completely reduced to ruins.
The part-time magician, part-time.. other, was just surveying the area a bit. Maybe find some usable scraps or something. Until he thought he heard a voice calling for someone. A kid? Did someone lose a kid out here? "Hello?" he called out. He didn't recall seeing anyone else around when he came to the ruins. "Oy!? Who's there?"

redjaybird:
“This was July. One of the biggest cities that was built on this dust-ridden planet.” This kid seemed really out of it. Of course, if he was actually in the mess that happened to the city, he’d be disintegrated with the rest of it.
Jay sighed. “Shit. Well.. Maybe you should go to a doctor or somethin’. Requires a bit of travel, though.”
Nai looked back at him, still not registering. July. What was July? A city...
He frowned, trying to recall seeing a city or even witnessing them crashing. But it was all just blank. “...” he shook his head, “I don’t want a doctor...” They’d find out he was different. Rem had warned against that, to be careful.
redjaybird:
“In a sense, but its more like a city came crashing to the ground. But, not even that. It just kinda.. got completely destroyed but some freak force. But not a ship crash. Were you not in that, then? Cuz something like that coulda rattled your head pretty damn good, too.” He didn’t really know what he could tell this kid.
Nai stared at the crater, confused. If this wasn’t a ship crash then...how did he get here? His head began to ache with trying to remember. “I...don’t remember...” he murmured, “Where are we? What is this place?” His voice was starting to sound annoyed, but it was more so out of fear and desperation to understand than anything else.

“Uhh, no. There hasn’t been any ships goin’ around since whenever all the old ones crashed, like, a hundred-some years ago.” If there were new incoming ships, he would’ve heard about it on the radio, right? That probably would’ve been widespread news. Unless it just happened and no one got the info, yet. But he didn’t see anything, and that would’ve been noticeable. “Did you… come from a ship crash?”
He had to of come from a crash, right? Nai looked back towards the crater of July. “...Is...that not a crash?” He sounded confused and disoriented. The crater looked like a crash sight, but then...Nai did not have anything else to base this idea off of.

Jay shook his head. “No, sorry kid. Never heard of them. I don’t exactly go around making very many friends, anyway. So my knowledge of people who don’t have bounties on their heads is limited. But I didn’t see anyone else walkin’ around here at this current time. So whoever you’re looking for might be.. off, elsewhere.”
He frowned, lowering his gaze. His head was aching, his ears starting to ring from the pain. “...Did you see any ships crash?” he asked, though a little more quietly, “She was on there.” Along with his brother. His sense of time was off. He didn’t realize that the memories he had were from over 150 years ago.
