The whole situation had been unforeseeable, but here they were, carrying King Eric's casket down to the catacombs where he will lay beside his forefathers. All circumstances had been unfortunate, and with Ariel now raising little Melody alone, Logan felt his own heart growing immensely heavy at the toll the Queen must be enduring even in her stoic silence. He'd found her after the funeral and held her for a while, just to show his support, his understanding.

That turned into a rather unspoken agreement, it seemed. He'd been walking by the nursery and found Ariel standing gazing out the window, holding little Melody who wouldn't stop seeming to be on the verge of tears. Logan didn't even hesitate in walking into the room, placing a hand on the Queen's shoulder so as not to startle her, and gently took Melody from her arms.

"I've got her, your grace." He murmurs, having been careful to remove the coat he'd been wearing earlier so Melody wouldn't poke herself on any of his finery. "Go get something to eat, take a walk, do something for you." Logan's voice is soft, not threatening in any way but calm, in an effort to spill some of that feeling over the royal.

The hedgehog was just holding some bandages. His supply back 'home', if you could call it that, was running low. It always amazed him, how Blaze could be so graceful, and have not a scratch on her. Yet he seemed to get some kind of scrape no matter what he did. He knew all too well the dangers that came with an open wound.

For a moment, Silver stares. When nothing happened, such as getting hit with rocks or whatever someone could find on the ground, he felt it safer to speak up.

"I hope you know that you don't have to be afraid of me."

He wasn't sure what to expect.

"I'm just gathering some supplies. I think cleared this area out, so I won't be here much longer. Do you need me to walk you somewhere?"

It was the least he could do. While wary of strangers, nowadays, he wanted to assume the best, not the worst, which is why he remained on guard for the moment. On guard or not, he could still treat someone with kindness.

"Let's make the night... or, day, I'm not sure which it is. But let's make it a little bit brighter."

Once again thinking about pool boy Vax, and the idea of him and Kerry finally sleeping together and Ariel comes up to get Kerry up for breakfast and just “GODDAMNIT KERRY” echos through the Villa as Vax rushes to get dressed

It's next appearance is on an Hungarian courtier in the first episode of the second season. It was worn again by Stephen V Locust, Prince of Moldavia in the thirtieth episode of the third season.

Sure, things one could say, are developing. Maybe even a little faster than Logan thought comfortable, but grief is a monster he knows well. And people do many different things when grief is involved, keeping someone under with talons like chains and dragging them deeper and deeper. Melody was getting better, however, at understanding Ariel is a force of good and plenty, and it warms Logan's heart to see the Queen fully able to hold and console her daughter.

He might even say he grows a little sad when it can't be the three of them in the nursery together. But he caught Ariel tonight singing Melody to sleep, and it reminded Logan of his place. That he aught not get so attached.

So he'd climbed into the shower that night to wash off the guilt he felt and the perhaps dirtiness he attributed to his own yearnings. Ariel brought them to life as if he were a starving man, whenever she touched him. Whenever they shared soft smiles through the castle halls. Whenever she caught Logan holding Melody late into the night so she might get some sleep. He's trapped in his thoughts that he doesn't hear much of anything outside the noise of the water coming from the showerhead until some chilled air hits his back.

To say he's speechless at seeing Ariel there would be an understatement. He turns only sidelong to her, keeping his waist pointed away, trying to allow her what modesty they both can keep in this moment but he knows he's blushing. "A-Ariel." He says, his tongue made of lead and making a fool out of him. "I can leave, if you'd like. Or..." I could stay if you need me. There is no need for him to say such a thing, it hangs with the steam in the shower around them, and he waits for her answer.

Ever since the fall-- he had dedicated himself to hunting creatures beyond human understanding. The wicked beasts that tormented humans and stole from them their sanity, their loyalty, their strength.

Just like what had happened to Belle.

He failed in saving her-- but there were others who could benefit from his bravado. Gaston had left all he knew behind-- LeFou, the boys, his legacy-- in lieu of a nameless life tracking down beasts across the world.

Which was how he found himself on a boat, bound for a new land. What he hadn't counted on was the vessel capsizing. Gaston had been infantry-- not navy. His knowlege of swimming was limited to lakes, rivers, and the occasional pond. Not the tumultuous turns of the sea.

As he slipped beneath the waves he wondered had he wasted his life. Going from childhood, to war hero, to village idiot. He fell into the abyss as he had fallen from the heights of the castle tower. Perhaps it was best to simply let go.

He was already dead anyway.

this post reminded me of the really bad paper I wrote in undergrad on Doctor Faustus and The Tempest and how if I'd had any idea what I was doing it would have focused on how the character whose magic is depicted as benevolent is much more domineering and shows much more of a will to power (bad) than the character who just straight up summons demons

(Thinking more about this also gets us to the additional wrinkle that Prospero does have actual power over Ariel while Mephistopheles is only bound to Faustus by the purely human function of a contract)
