it’s incredibly ballsy of @crimeloyalty to assume i can even play with the idea of trust again. but she’s ballsy and i have to give her that. i keep seeing it like i’m dead somehow, and whether i believe it or not, it won’t go away. it’s just fucking burned into my memory like the outline of a five alarm fire’s ruins.

the worst part is the longer i look at her, the more i realize she’s not bullshitting me. she means what she says when she says she wants me to trust her. it makes me want to chew all the skin off my lip just to spite my face. the second i might be something significant the only feeling i’m dying for is to disappear. it shoots all the way through me every time i look around these walls. i’m living on the quinzel estate with her and bruce wayne and my kid loves them both. that puts me in a position to shut up. that makes me want to not take a total torch to everything.

Ivy's lips curled in a humourless smile as the psychiatrist corrected her. It appeared that Dr. Quinzel was a real scholar, unlike most of the colleagues who had preceded her. She had already guessed as much, considering that the other woman was familiar with Pamela's work, so hearing her giving a small lecture about appropriate vocabulary wasn't a surprise.

Still, it was refreshing, compared to what had been her experience with Arkham's doctors so far. Not that she would ever admit it.

"My bad for assuming, doc," she answered, even if her tone was anything but apologetic. "So you're hear to study our pathologies. Then maybe I can save you the trouble and share a secret with you."

She leant forward, just a little, careful not to look threatening in any way. The guards were always looking for the smallest excuse to resort to violence.

"You're wasting your time. You can dissect our heads and understand what went wrong in there...at least according to how you see things. But rehabilitation? Forget it. No one in here believes or wants that. Or any sort of help you can offer them. Unless you're planning to break someone out, because that is the kind of medical help lots of the folks in here would sign up for."

Ivy herself included, of course.

"But you know what? If you manage to get me a glass of booze, even the shitty kind, I'll drink to that. Life being a sea of shades of gray."

Mimicking a toast with a quiet snort, she rested her back against the chair once more.

"I think our time is almost up. Whose head will you be prodding after me? If you tell me, I might give you some heads up. I'm feeling generous."

"I don't like the word crazy, it doesn't really mean anything to me," she replied calmly, "there are psychosis, and mental illnesses, and all sorts of words we use to try and understand the human psyche, the human brain. But they're just words. And crazy is the emptiest word there is."

She shook her head briefly. "I'm here because I want to understand, and I want to help. I believe in rehabilitation, and I believe that people who are different from the norm still deserve to have a voice."

A voice she hadn't always been given herself. The world was a gigantic machine, chewing people and spitting them out. There was no place for the poor, the hungry, the "insane".

Harleen studied the woman, seeing the look of surprise on her face. She had a feeling that she had said the right words, but still felt like a tightrope walker. Miss Poison Ivy -if that was how she wanted to be called- was a hard woman to impress, and her expression quickly hardened again.

"I think that things are not that simple. People like Batman would like the world to be separated into good guys and bad guys. Heroes and villains. But this isn't a comic book, this is real life. People can do bad things for good reasons. Good people can do terrible things. And bad people can do noble things. Life is not black and white."

harley quinzel was born new jersey, but outside of gotham, to a mother who never wanted a child and a father who left shortly after finding out his girlfriend was pregnant. by the time harley was nine her mother had given up on living altogether.

she takes a job at a travelling carnival one summer, and meets a boy named jack, who never stops smiling even when he gets his teeth kicked in for it. harley promises to protect him, but eventually the carnival has to leave, and they're torn apart. more on that later !

then harley's mom dies. six months later he packs up and disappears; off to gotham university. she's going to be a psychiatrist, for people like their mother, like jack, like them.

their first job is at arkham asylum— infamous for "dangerous psychopaths" the real danger lies in arkham's institution. for every good doctor there's five who don't care, and he begins to lose heart.

then she meets a nurse named pamela isley. they become fast friends despite everything, and make the suffering of arkham just a little more tolerable. then, pamela is arrested ! and yet another person harley cares about is ripped away from them!

one day, a shipment of blackgate inmates is sent to arkham. overflow, they say. a fight breaks out between them, and in the center of it, miraculously, is jack: flat on his back under someone's boot, bleeding from the nose and grinning.

one thing leads to another, and harley breaks him out of arkham. she gets fired and jack feels really bad, but hey, now they have plenty of time to hang out! he just has to do this one thing first, a job for his new boss. unless... harley wants to help?

and she would do anything for jack. of course she says yes. and it's always just one more job, with no end in sight. and, truthfully, harley's spent his entire life doing good for other people. maybe he wants to do something selfish, for once. so they keep going

then, of course, you know how the story goes; a bat, a red hood, and a soon-to-be condemned chemical plant. jack dies, and something else is born. following close behind is the faithful harlequin.

i have this problem where i keep finding myself back in the same place over and over again. i have this problem where i’m constantly accidentally attached to a giant bat. i have this issue where i don’t know how i find him, don’t know how he finds me, but it never stops happening. and then we find each other, and sometimes we both have this problem where we can’t seem to get away from each other.

( he’s my big mistake. the kind of thing you don’t risk. the kind of thing a cat doesn’t risk. i can’t afford to go soft but i can’t do anything in his hands except fall apart and i let him know that as deep and hard and sharp as i can. )

i want to call him a coward afraid of my claws. i want to leave a million red fucking paintings across his back. i want to maul him into an artpiece i can’t stand until his blood’s drying and sticky in the creases of my palms. i want to do anything but what i know i do, which is go to pieces the second his stupid fucking mouth attaches to my neck. he’s the worst decision i’ve ever made. he’s a bad choice i keep choosing and i’m choosing it again.

i’m selfish. go fuck yourself.

“ sure. i’ll get us tickets to a movie while i’m at it. ”

i have no room to be biting or snarking at him. i’m not in a position as much as i could be, and handing the reins over to the bat feels equal parts relieving and incredibly idiotic. jeans or a dress. yeah. i’ll make sure to get an afternoon res at brasserie. we’ll share dessert brought by waiters overly obsessed about how much we like each other, and there’ll be some bullshit la vie en rose street performer down the block conveniently playing just for us. and i’ll wear a dress or jeans.

( i can only just barely breathe when i straddle his knee and he’s good enough to keep me level, but i’m expert enough to keep myself steady. it’s not a thing i think about when i do it -- learning to lean exactly the right way to accommodate every shift. it’s enough to pang between my legs and kill me for a second, but i love bad decisions, and i’m happily carrying out as many as i want, and this one could be so much worse. i know how to move two ways: the way i do, and the way he gets me to. )

he’s too close. he’s so close. i obsessively think about how close, about his mouth too near all those unpretty little marks, and i think about how he’ll hopefully never ask, never question, never breathe a word about it. i can feel his fingers on the back of my neck where there’s almost a crater of scar tissue under my hair, an indent about the size of a fat, burning cigar. i’m too dizzy to even think about anything once he kisses me and i’m angry with myself for the way my thoughts just scatter. i’m angry with myself for going blind, and his mouth is covered in smudges of bright red. i have to hold on tighter or i think i’ll faint.

he brushes against me and i gasp into his stupid mouth. it’s cold and i don’t care. there are worse things i could be doing than deciding to let batman fuck me on a roof until i undoubtedly puncture suit and have to remind myself how to apply pressure before i accidentally perform surgery on him. it takes semi lucidity to realize how far i get before i almost really hurt. i hate the fact that i stop myself, because the only thing i want other than crying out hard against his neck is to dig into him and keep going until i black out.

i black out, but mostly because i can’t stop gripping so tight, mostly because my fingers ache where they’re bending. my knuckles crack so loudly i hear it in my ears but i think it’s just me. it takes me a second to even realize he’s the only thing i can taste and i’m chasing his movement to loop my arms around his neck and melt into him. my skin looks like i’ve been in a war with a vacuum cleaner. there’s one mark in the hollow of my throat that feels like a bee sting when i swallow. i blink behind the mask, try to remind myself how to breathe. batmobile. i kiss him, this time, something like i mean it and i need it to be clear just how much. i bite down hard enough to taste metal and i’m all the more fucked for it.

Harley laid in bed running her fingers through Pammy's hair slowly, a small smile on her face as she looked at the woman's sleeping face, the slack jaw of a woman deep in sleep and so utterly comfortable where she was resting.

Harley couldn't get over the fact that this was her life now, that she was here, in bed, with the love of her life. Not someone that she had deemed to be good enough to be the love of her life, but someone who was actually, irrevocably in love with her just as she was with them.

There was a certain sadness that would creep into Harley at times, it was nights like tonight where the moon was high, where Harley was bare to just her skin and lost in her own thoughts.

And she's reminded of being a child, of never being good enough according to her parents. She's reminded of how hard she pushed herself to make them proud. How she forced herself to excel in gymnastics just so that she could get an "I'm proud of you" from her parents only for it to never come.

She's reminded of being the adult who was so desperate to just get the approval of someone in her life. To just be good enough for someone.

She felt a sinking feeling every time she thought of a young Harleen Quinzel who tried so hard to be what everyone else wanted from her, who was desperate for love and attention from somone.

And then she had met Mr. J and yes, she knew he was twisted, knew that Joker was wrong. But he gave her what she had craved for so very long, he had given her attention and he fed her pretty words and showed her what she had thought to be love.

She had been so sure that girls like her didn't get love. And then she had met Joker and she was soaring through the air.

Until she wasn't.

Until she started to see that the love was thinly veiled lives. Saw that she was nothing more than just a stepping stone in his journey to destroy the world. To get his own revenge on the world that had wronged him.

And she had convinced herself again that love wasn't meant for girls like her. That she was far too unlovable. She had destroyed herself for Mr. J, had changed her hair, had changed her skin even to be what he wanted from her but it had never been enough. She could have destroyed herself for Mr. J and he still would have asked for more from her, would have demanded that she give and give until there was nothing left of her.

And then she had met Pammy and everything in her life had changed on it's head. Poison Ivy had held out a hand for Harley, had offered her what she had always wanted, what she had always so desperately craved.

Pammy had given her unconditional love, had showered Harley with her affection and desire and she had never asked for anything in return. She had just loved Harley, had made sure to worship her and hold her close. She never asked for more than what Harley was willing to give.

And Harley gave her so much, gave her everything Pammy gave her tenfold. And sure, there were times she still wondered, still worried she would never be enough, that she wasn't deserving of love. But her love, her joy, her Poison Ivy made sure to remind her every step of the way that girls like Harley Quinn deserved love just like everyone else.
