Murder Drones Fanfic - Make Believe Adventures (repost from my dA Missluckychan22)

Tessa, who was now 11, sat mournfully looking at the foggy day through her window. She was being punished for speaking up at breakfast about how she didn't want to practice ballroom dancing. The girl laid on her bed, staring at the ceiling.

"You can come out of your room at dinner time, young lady!", the words of James Elliott, the girl's strict father, rang through her head.

Serial Designation J, Tessa's very first worker drone friend sat beside her on the bed. The silver ponytailed robot woman reassured, "Look, I know it's bad but, the day will go by,"

The second fixed one, a sweet little butler named N who had curly white hair responded, "Yeah, we could always play Rummy."

"GIN Rummy," J corrected to N, holding back slugging the littler guy in the shoulder for Tessa's sake.

Tessa sighed and hugged her pillow as she looked out her bedroom window. "I want to go on an adventure, I want to sword fight and explore and do something instead of being trapped in this god-awful prison."

J laughed a little at her thought. "No, that's silly,"

"What is it, J?" Tessa inquired, her eyes full of interest in what her favourite girl worker drone was thinking.

J relinquished her thought for the inquisitive Tessa, relaxing her shoulders as she suggested, "Remember that game we used to play when you were 9 right after you fixed me up?" J knew it was silly, however, if Tessa was interested in what her idea could be, then it was all the more worth it now that she told the girl she admired.

"The Princess and the Mage?" the young Elliot family woman exclaimed, trying not to be loud enough for her parents to hear, "I used to love that game!"

N had heard about this game but he never got to play, he eagerly trilled, "Could I play too? I really would wanna join."

"Maybe if we needed a villain…" J teased.

Tessa shook her head and giggled, "Nooo, not a villain, but a prince! A prince captured by a wicked witch!"

Just then, the newest robot Tessa had repaired after her parents destroyed it, a pretty little robot maid with glasses, came in with Tessa's noon tea and biscuits. The bobbed haired drone greeted politely, "Your noon tea, Miss Elliot."

Tessa piped up as she got off the bed and held V's skirt ever so gently to get the robot's attention, "Please, V, could you join me and my friends for a game?"

V looked to N, her LED display showing little white light blush marks before agreeing to play.

Tessa let out a little squeal of delight and stated, "For real life? Thank you, V! I need you to climb ontop of the wardrobe with N, and I want you to pretend to be a witch who kidnapped a prince."

N helped get the chair from Tessa's vanity desk and put it infront of the large wardrobe cabinet. He giggled, "After you, my lady," as he held his hand out to V.

The sweet bespectacled maid took his hand and hopped up onto the chair before laying down on her stomach attop the furniture where N soon joined her. V had read a lot of fairytales in the library with N, and she was familiar with the role of a witch. She took a decorative spoon she kept with her and held it like a makeshift wand. The little maid cackled and called down to Tessa and J, "Helloooo my pretties! I have kidnapped your precious prince! And if you want to save him from me turning him into a dog, you'll save him before sunset tonight!"

N laughed and recounted, "Ooh, good one, V!" before doing his best Shakespearian themed voice and recounting, "Alas, oh Princess Tessa, fairest of them all, dost thou wisheth to save me from becoming a common mutt? I shall wait for thee atop the highest tower in the land." ---------------------------------------

The forest was filled with song birds and sunlight, the two friends, a mage and her princess protege rode on the back of a stunning white horse down the forest path.

"I think you should maybe think of saving another prince, my liege," Lady Jay of Umbridge scorned as she rolled her eyes at the princess with the flowing ebony hair.

The lionhearted Princess Tessa Elliot of Manorwood insisted as they rode out of the forest path and into the emerald glenn, "It wouldn't right of me to let him be turned into a dog, he has a throne to return to, as do we. So let us make haste!" The two women rode towards the edge of the valley, towards a dark forest with cawing crows and rolling fog. The horse began to buck and bray, horrified of the dark woods, causing the two to dismount the creature.

"You won't come with us, will you, girl?" Tessa bargained with the ivory coloured mare.

Lady Jay, sighing in annoyance, waved her hands and summoned forth a bunch of fresh garden carrots, shaking one in front of the horse. "Come on, you wouldn't want the orcs to come and turn tho into glue and a meal, woulds't thou?"

The horse brayed arrogantly at the silver-haired mechanical mage, and began galloping to find another way through the dark woods.

"Guess we are on our own, huh, Jay?" the Princess stated before optimistically calling out, drawing a sword out of the scabbard, "Well then, we must press on, we must make it to the tower through the woods."

The two headed, now on foot into the foggy and dark woods. The eerie forest sounds grew louder as they continued on. The two were stopped as they heard wild cackling.

From a small clearing, with thunderbolts and lightning appearing from the skies above, was the vile and wicked witch simply known as Vendetta. The wild eyed witch shot a lightning bolt straight at Tessa, she leapt clear of the blow. "You may be spritely, dearie, but I am more than a one trick pony!" Vendetta laughed as she commanded a tree to come to life before she flew away on a broom stick while calling out, "Good luck, dearies!"

Princess Tessa brandished her sword, standing infront of the towering, monsterous cyprus.

Jay, waited in the wings, she knew what she would need to do, she just had to do like they practiced.

The Princess, despite being in a dress, effortly dodged the swipes at her by the creature as she swung at it, cleaving off the tendril-like branches with her broadsword.

The tree creature reached down and swiped up the Princess before letting out a roar.

Lady Jay ran full tilt at the tree, holding in her hands a single piece of coal. She ran her thumbs across the carbony rock, causing it to ignite. "See you in Hell, foul beast!" the silver haired mage screamed as she tossed the flaming rock at the Cyprus-Tree creature.

The creature dropped the princess in horror as it went up in flames, letting Tessa fall into the open arms of her lovely mage companion.

The two saw then the end of the storm and charged towards the glistening sunlight. At last, out of the scary forest! Princess Tessa saw as her horse came bounding from the edge of the trees towards her. Lady Jay scoffed with a laugh, "Your horse isn't very brave, Princess."

"That's alright, Jay," the princess reassured as she re-sheathed her sword for now, "But we most certainly are!" The two hopped back upon the steed and ventured closer to the ivory tower, hearing a charming man's voice singing from the room near the spire's top.

"It's the handsome and kind Prince Nathaniel!" Princess Tessa proclaimed as they rode closer to the tower.

The prince noticed the two women approaching on the horse, he called down, "Hello Princess Tessa of Manorwood and Lady Jay of Umbridge!"

Lady Jay mocked from the back of the horse, "If you really were a prince you'd get yourself down there."

Nathaniel sweetly replied, "Maybe if I had 20 years, 35 feet of hair and a pair of scissors."

Vendetta, who was also in the tower couldn't help but giggle at that reference and she bargained down to Princess Tessa, "Okay, tell you what, I won't turn the Prince into a dog, if you let me marry him."

Tessa raised an eyebrow and laughed, "Wait what?"

Lady Jay put her arm around the Princess and responded back rudely, "WELL THATS FINE, SHE DOESN'T NEED A STINKIN PRINCE! BUT I'M STILL GOING UP THERE AND KICKING YOUR ASS, WITCH!" she hopped off the white horse and started climbing with her barehands up the tower, insulting the witch every couple feet.

Tessa hopped off her horse and scolded, "Hang on, Lady Jay! You could fall!"

J was climbing up the bookshelf that stood next to the wardrobe.

V giggled as she took a stack of books and started throwing them at J.

Tessa called out, "WAIT!" in fright but it was too late, the sound of the books hitting the floor rang out in the room. She could hear her parents shouting from down the hall and the approaching sound of her father's shoes on the mahogany floors. She called to her robots, "Quick, grab a book and sit near my bed!"

Mr Elliot finally came into Tessa's room, he burst the door open and shouted, "I thought we told you, young-lady to…" he stopped his yelling as he looked on at the sight.

J was softly reading a book to Tessa while they sat on the bed.

N sat at the vanity chair that was now by Tessa's bed, pretending to read silently. V stood in the corner with a handful of books, smiling politely to Mr Elliot.

Tessa's father blinked in confusion before sighing and saying calmly, "Carry on," before walking out and closing the door.

The three robots and their best human friend waited silently until they no longer could hear the foot steps in the hall, and they all had a quiet laugh about it. Tessa pulled in N, V, and J for a group hug, giggling happily, "That was the greatest adventure yet, thank you, all of you."

V giggled, "How about another? We could be pirates?"

N did a silly pirate voice and called out, "Avast! Captain Tessa, let us find treasure across the seven seas!"

J put her arm around Tessa and teased happily, "And I could be your first mate?"

The 11 year-old Tessa nodded happily, and soon she and her robot friends were on another make-believe adventure to make it through the rest of the time until dinner.

Weekend Top Ten #474

Top Ten Characters Who Came Back from the Dead

I am stunned – stunned! – that I’ve not done this one before. I mean, come on! It’s right there.

So there’s obviously a thematic resonance going on here. This weekend – the weekend you’re meant to be reading this – is famous where I come from because of a story where someone came back from the dead. Unlike other holidays – Christmas, Halloween, the release of a Star War – I’ve actually been a little slow off the mark in making lists that celebrate Easter. I’ve done eggs and bunnies, but incredibly I’ve never done resurrections, which really is the day’s whole deal. I mean, if you get down to brass tacks, it’s kinda the big selling point of the entire religion really. I hesitate to say “USP” because, well, it’s been done elsewhere, but it’s still supposed to be one of the big Christian takeaways (there’s definitely a chain of Christian takeaways in the States, isn’t there?).

Anyway, resurrection. It’s actually more common than you might think. Certainly in terms of comics there are probably more characters who’ve “died and come back” than have never “died” at all. But! And this is where I get pernickety. Most characters who “die” don’t actually die. Take Batman for instance: he’s shot in the face by Darkseid, and then Superman ups and finds his charred corpse, but – shocker! – he’s not actually dead, he was just sent back in time, where he Quantum Leaps his way back to the present day, accumulating enough Omega Energy with each leap that by the time he reaches the present day he’s blow a hole in reality. Or something, I’ve not read that story for quite a few years. Anyway: he wasn’t dead. Neither was Sherlock Holmes, or for that matter Dirty Den. Generally speaking, if someone dies in a story and then reappears, they’re not dead. Not really.

So this list here is supposed to be people who actually died. Now, even here, it’s debatable; I mean, is E.T. dead, or does his body just go into some kind of hibernation? If Optimus Prime’s brainwaves survive, does he ever really die? Is a clone someone coming back to life or not? It’s all a bit wishy-washy really, which kind of makes sense when you’re talking about resurrection. And let’s not get onto the chief resurrector, the Doctor; do they die every time they regenerate? Or is the regeneration itself a way of staving off death? When David Tennant turned into Matt Smith, did the Tennant-Doctor die? “I don’t want to go,” and all that; there’s always a subtle (or not-so-subtle) change in personality. Does that count? Well, for the purposes of this list, I’ve kinda decided it doesn’t. But it’s an interesting discussion to have, if you’re a big old nerd like me.

So yeah: people who have died – properly, I suppose – and then come back to life. That’s the list. No fakery, to mistaken identity, no alternate universe shenanigans; they were dead but they got better (no Chev Chelios either; sorry, Stath stans). No zombies either! Or vampires! They’re not undead; they were dead, and now they’re alive again. That’s the rule. Also I’ve seriously tried to limit comic book characters. And I’m sure there are some big omissions (like, I know there’s one from Game of Thrones that’s not on here, but that’s because I’ve not seen that far into the show yet; I know, I know). But I reckon these are the best at being back.

Optimus Prime (Transformers franchise, from about 1987): OP is the OG when it comes to coming back to life. Dying and then stopping being dead is pretty much his thing. Technically the first time he came back from the dead was in the original animation; famously being offed by Megatron in The Transformers: The Movie (1986), he came back to life a year later. Subsequent media have frequently killed him and brought him back, even in the live-action movies, but I want to talk about the comics. Because the original Marvel run killed off Optimus at a similar time as the cartoon; he’s blown up in slightly contrived circumstances, but his brain is saved on a floppy disk. Two years later he has his body rebuilt and his brain restored and he’s off to the races once more. Then in 1991, when facing down planet-eating mega-bastard Unicron, he sacrifices himself again, but this time his personality has begun to merge with that of his ostensibly-human companion Hi-Q. Hi-Q/Prime is converted/rebuilt into a new body, and he wins the war. So there you go: even in this one sliver of continued continuity – not including off-shoots or spin-offs, let alone other iterations of the overall franchise – Optimus Prime died and came back to life twice. Beat that, Easter.

E.T. (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, 1982): not much to say here that we don’t already know from the Book of Spielberg. E.T., doddery little alien magic-man, grows sicker and sicker as he’s stuck on Earth, until in a thrillingly-edited set-piece he seems to expire, human doctors unable to help him. “I know you’re gone,” says best bud Elliot, “because I don’t know what to feel.�� But then! His heart glows! His colour returns! And he positively yells, “E.T. phone hooooooome!” – and Elliot’s euphoric laugh is just devastating. The whole sequence – what is it, ten minutes? Fifteen? – is masterful in every way, from the technical to the performative to the emotional. Bloody magic is what it is.

Gandalf (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, 1954): Gandalf the Grey famously leads the Fellowship of the Ring across the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, where he faces off against a Balrog. After a bit of “you shall not pass” and all that, they both fall from the bridge, battling each other on the way down, before both perishing at the bottom. Gandalf, though, is not really Gandalf, but Olórin, one of the Maiar – basically a kind of angel, I guess. He is returned to Earth by the powers-that-be to complete his mission, and is promoted to Gandalf the White, supplanting the corrupt wizard Saruman. This new iteration of Gandalf is a bit more serious and steadfast, although he does retain his fascination with hobbits. Regardless, he gets a terrific death scene and a triumphant resurrection, and how it ties into Tolkien’s wider mythology is interesting.

Superman (DC Comics, 1993): comic book characters die and come back all the time; it’s pretty much a staple of the medium. I guess Jean Grey/Phoenix is probably the most famous, but they’ve all done at some point (even if, like in my Batman example earlier, sometimes they don’t actually die). Anyway, Superman died, very famously, after getting into a tremendous barney with genetically-engineered super-git Doomsday (as famously, and atrociously, depicted in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice). The whole “Death of Superman” arc is interesting and entertaining as an example of mid-nineties big-panel EXTREME storytelling: as the issues tick down to the fateful scrap in Metropolis, the number of panels-per-page is reduced until the final issue is basically just full of splash pages. It’s a terrific, exhilarating rumble, really selling the heft of the confrontation. Interestingly, the comic spends a lot of time afterwards dealing with life without Superman, as a raft of imitators/wannabe successors emerge from the woodwork; these include the best-ever Superboy, Conner Kent, and Steel, who’s basically Superman meets Iron Man. Eventually, of course, Superman comes back, his body essentially having been sent to a Kryptonian day spa to recuperate; he emerges clad in black and with a mullet, so death obviously has some lasting repercussions. Overall, it’s a whopping arc with long-term consequences, and whilst it’s easy to make Christ parallels when discussing Superman, this story doesn’t really hew that way (unlike the Snyder-verse which really goes all-in on that plot point, much to the films’ detriment). One of the better aspects is how, even in death, Superman is an inspiration, which in itself has a long trail; leading, eventually, to Batman’s famous withering diss, “the last time you inspired someone was when you where dead.” Anyway, I’ve gone on about this far too long.

Spock (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, 1984): let’s start by acknowledging just how great Spock’s death is in Wrath of Khan. As a plot point within the film, as a piece of staging and performance, and as a landmark moment in this franchise, it was seminal; a death for the ages (as an aside, it’s crazy to think Star Trek as a whole was only sixteen years old when Spock died; the MCU was eleven when Tony Stark clicked the bucket). Anyway, they built an entire film around how to bring him back, and Spock as we know him is absent for much of it; a presence looming over everything as he rapidly ages, going through his Vulcan super-puberty and everything. It’s actually a rather sombre film as Kirk’s son is killed and the Enterprise blows up; bringing back Spock comes with a very real cost. Trek III is not one of the top-tier films – in the loose trilogy that comprises Khan, Spock, and The Voyage Home it’s certainly the weakest – but it’s still pretty good, often underrated. And, of course, it brings back Spock, which is nice.

Agent Coulson (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., 2013): Coulson’s death in Avengers comes as a huge shock, one of the fan-favourite characters being brutally offed in surprising fashion. In a film chock full of super-people, it’s the ordinary guy who buys it tragically. However, did any of us really think he was dead-dead? And so barely a year later he pops back up in the TV series Agents of SHIELD. However, his reincarnation became a recurring plot point; his references to spending time in Tahiti (“It’s a magical place”) becoming increasingly sinister as we come to understand even he doesn’t know how he’s back up and running. The eventual truth – Nick Fury using painful and transformative alien tech to basically bring Coulson back to life – may be a bit underwhelming, but it gave Clark Gregg a lot of meat to chew on dramatically speaking, and it underscored a lot of his character development going forward (especially when he, yes, died again, and then sort-of came back, twice).

Buffy Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 2001): full disclosure: I never watched Buffy religiously. I think I just missed it at the start and it was only when all my friends were talking about how great it was that I started tuning in more regularly. Weirdly, I think the most I watched it was around the time Buffy died and came back. It’s fascinating, really, and full credit to the show for the way they explored it; in a series full of magic, the afterlife, and the undead, bringing a character back to life isn’t too shocking. Willow, Buffy’s witchy mate, resurrects her with magic; but in an excellent twist, it turns out that she was in Heaven, and is super pissed off to be pulled out of paradise and stuck back on Earth, leading to her feeling depressed and alienated all season. That’s a great hook for bringing a character back, and leads to some meaty stuff for Sarah Michelle Geller to do.

Agent Smith (The Matrix Reloaded, 2003): do you ever feel that The Matrix has slipped from popular culture a little bit? Twenty years ago it was ascendent, rivalling Lord of the Rings for the title of “the new Star Wars”. Everyone was copying it. but now hardly anyone talks about it. probably because it hasn’t had a multimedia shelf-life comprising dozens of games and spin-off shows. Maybe the new film will change that. But I digress; Hugo Weaving is tremendous as Agent Smith in the first film, and is exploded at the end (spoilers) by Keanu Reeves’ Neo. Unsurprisingly – especially as he’s, well, just bits of code – he’s back in the sequel. However, he’s now been corrupted; he becomes, basically, a virus, self-replicating and threatening not just our heroes but the Matrix itself. This builds across two films, as Neo has to fight dozens of Smiths in the famous “Burly Brawl”, before the final conflict in The Matrix Revolutions when it seems everyone in the program has been Smithed. It offers Weaving a lot of scenery to chew on and makes for some great set-piece battles, even if the films themselves are a little disappointing.

Olaf (Frozen II, 2019): let’s not beat around the bush here – Olaf carks it in Frozen II. Okay, maybe Elsa dies; maybe Anna dies in the first film. They’re frozen, right, but I feel like it’s “magic ice” and there’s something going on there. Do they come back to life or were they ever really dead? Anyway, Elsa is effectively “gone” but we get a protracted death scene for the comic relief talking snowman. He literally fades away, slowly dying in Anna’s arms, and melts into a flurry of snow that blows away. People talk about Bambi’s mum all the time, but mark my words; “Olaf’s death” is going to be cited as a major traumatic incident for twenty-year-olds in 2030. His resurrection, truth be told, is slightly less great, Elsa just straight-up bringing him back to life, reminding us that “water has memory” to let us know that it’s the same Olaf and he remembers everything (including, presumably, dying? That’s creepy). And that, to be honest, is where I draw the line; sentient wind and rock monsters I can handle, but we all know homeopathy is bollocks.

Emperor Palpatine (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, 2019): look, I hate this. But let’s deal with it anyway, because I have a funny feeling it’s going to lead to some quite interesting stories being told in spin-off Star Wars fiction. I personally feel quite strongly that Palpatine should have stayed dead. And maybe he did? We are led to believe that the Palpatine we see in Rise is a clone; there are jars of stilted Snokes floating in the background. He’s all knackered and broken, eyes blackened and fingers dropping off; clearly he’s not well. So is he really the same character at all? Is his Sith essence somehow fed into this new body, the way Prime’s mind is downloaded from a floppy disk (“run prime.exe”)? Let’s say it counts, let’s say he’s the same slimy Palps we know and love. He is, at least, a sinister presence, and like I say, the whys and wherefores of how he came to be back is quite interesting. There’s a fascinating story to be told about the rise of Snoke and the seduction of Ben Solo – a more interesting story than anything told in The Rise of Skywalker, for starters. Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian seems to be researching cloning and seeks to extract midichlorians from a Force-sensitive being; are we to conclude that this in service of making a new body for the Emperor? All this – stuff hinted at but not explored in the film itself – is, like I say, interesting if not outright fascinating. And I agree, there is a certain degree of circularity in bringing back the series’ Big Bad for the final instalment. But I still feel, hand on heart, that it undoes a lot of the victory of Return of the Jedi (as did The Force Awakens, if I’m honest), as well as throwing away all the development of Rey and Kylo in The Last Jedi. So: Palpatine is cool, his presence and backstory in Rise of Skywalker is suitably creepy and interesting, but on the whole it’s crap and they shouldn’t have brought him back. The end.

Ten people who definitely died and definitely un-died! What could be more Easter-y? Honourable mention goes to the episode of Red Dwarf where Rimmer changes history and ends up not being a hologram, only to accidentally blow himself up in the final seconds.

First Album you ever purchased: Michael Jackson - Bad

Thanks for that so how old were you when you realised you were blessed vocally? were you shy about your singing abilities or have you always been quiet expressive in that way, also what drives you to continue singing?

I get asked that a bit and I still struggle with this answer. I think my parents thought I could sing before I knew, then my teachers in school and choir and stuff.

I just sang because I was put into lessons and I knew I could hold a note. I love singing now, and I’m not humble-bragging, I genuinely think I can sing now but it was only recently that I actually felt I had a nice voice.

I sing only because I write songs, if I didn’t write songs I wouldn’t sing because I’d have nothing to say that’s truly from my own fucked up mind. I’m still shy about it, but more about the words I’m saying, not about how my voice sounds sonically.

You also write your own music, beautifully if I might add, the lyrics to beige are developed in such a poetic way not to mention the love drunk production, the tracks a wonder, much love.

In regards to your songwriting where do you pull your inspirations from and what do you enjoy most about the creating process of writing a song.

Firstly THANK YOU Sophie <3 with Beige, I remember I was crying on my bedroom floor lol. I find it hard to deal with sadness if I can’t do anything about it but I remembered my friend (NITU) had sent me this beat that I was going to write to so I picked my sorry ass up and sat in the chair facing my speakers and laptop and chucked the song into ableton.

I don’t remember thinking about structure, finding the right melodies or making the words that I was thinking of sound cooler or more poetic than they actually are. My writing is kinda blunt when emotion strikes so I kinda blacked out & recorded it then went to sleep.

The next day we had the song & it was just a matter of working with Nitu to make the creation an actual track. I think I pull a lot of inspiration from my past, fantasy & subconscious state. I like to write from a powerful feminine point of view but also the polar opposite.

I don’t always know though, it changes a lot & that’s what makes it exciting for me. I think I enjoy the release of stress & seeing the words on paper the most.

When I look at what I’ve written and I can honestly look at it and think “that makes sense” or “this is what I wanted to say to someone but I didn’t have the guts to when I had the chance” or even “yes this is truly how I feel but I don’t want to say it out loud”.

Those moments are like looking into a dirty mirror that you’ve been cleaning for a while and you get a glimpse of your reflection. It’s intimidating & self reflective & raw. Also highly addictive.

You also dabble with production producing your EP Crimson Girl and various other tracks such as “Ruby” one of your collaborations with another Auckland based producer such as your self known as Troy Samuela.

How did you get into producing and what inspires you to continue putting together your own tracks?

I honestly just got sick of playing the guitar and only making acoustic songs. I went to music school here in Auckland to “learn how to make electronic music” and that’s where I was initially introduced to the idea of creating tracks through a DAW on your lappy.

There was one assignment in particular where we had to produce like 2-3 songs or something and I remember needing those credits to pass the actual course so I made them 2 nights before the deadline.

I had noo idea what I was doing but afterwards I was like hell yeah this sounds alright I could do this, this is fun. So from then on I committed to learning more & creating more as a self proclaimed beat maker (looool) There is a certain moment after you sit down with the intention to make a beat or just play around, where you lose yourself in between the speakers and your eyes melt into the screen.

In this space time doesn’t exist and nothing else matters cause nothing is as captivating or emotional or fucking dope as what is going on in your little area. That’s what inspires me to keep putting my stuff together because that space is a hell of a drug to be addicted to.

Better than chips even. In regards to your “Ruby” with Troy can you share how you went about the collaboration process and what you enjoyed most about the collaboration?

Troy Samuela is a very special person to me. With this song in particular I was at his house and I’m pretty sure we had just eaten a shit ton of bakery food with money we didn’t have.

We’d been wanting to work on a track for a while and I can’t remember who initiated it first but we ended up sitting there making something. He was at the desk putting sounds together and I was on the bed saying “yeah na cool gross don’t do that SHITTTT YA ADD THAT na I have a better sample” and blah blah you get the point.

My favourite part was probably when we finished to be honest because we argue a lot whenever we make music together lol. He is hands down my favourite person to make music with and played a huge role in building my confidence and skill set around production. What do you love most about the collaboration process as a whole? Do you have some favourite collaboration from that past that you think worked together perfectly to create a track? Why you feel that collaboration worked?

For example Jarule and Ashanti - Then Why it worked?

One of my favourite vocal collabs is Michael Buble & Laura Pausini - You Will Never Find, top 5 easy.

The way their voices intertwine is something really hard to find and a blessing if you do. A lot of vocalists that work together sit on top of each other or there is a clear winner (you totally know what i mean so don’t judge me) who occupies most of the space in the song.

This track is one of the very few that is sonically perfect to me, it’s so vivid you can almost physically see how their voices come together effortlessly. It totally worked 10/10 as a vocal duet. You recently collaborated with another Auckland based producer LMC on the track “Sideway Love” which was premiered through Noisey how did this come about and did you write the lyrics for this track? What was this collaboration like for you and what did you learn from the experience?

LMC is a cool guy. He sent this song to me as an instrumental and like Beige, I wrote the lyrics & recorded that night and sent the demo back to him. This collaboration was dope although i had to re record the final version and it took me forever (because life got in the way) to send the final vocals back haha. Liam was so excited for this track to come out and he really deserved that Noisey premiere, he’s grinding! #LMC

Are you working on any projects at the moment that we should keep an eye out for and what can we expect from these projects?

Yes!! Exciting projects! I won’t say much, but I’ve got a collaborative music video coming out soon, a new single in May and a surprise that we’re announcing soon. I. Can’t. Wait. Here at beatsfortheill we have a love for spiritual expression. Can you share what inspires you as a person spiritually and how expressing yourself through music helps you in day to day life?

Spiritually, I like to pray & just let go of things that have the potential to take me over & that take my eyes off the prize. I think I feel things very intensely & as a spiritual person I’ve found refuge in my God and a release through making music, like I explained earlier with beige. Day to day life is real fucking hard, it’s some of the toughest times we’re experiencing as a generation as a whole so music for me has helped me be steadfast in my pursuit of joy & fulfillment in such a chaotic, unsteady time. I’m all for people, not just musicians, finding their spiritual safe place and haven where they feel unconditionally loved, protected, refreshed, joyous (not just happy, know the difference), strengthened and inspired. Any live performances coming up that we should keep an eye out for and what do you love most about preforming live in comparison to recording in a studio?

A couple! Again I can’t say too much right now but I’ll let you know as soon I can :D I like being right in front of people and seeing them listen to the words. I’m fairly new to performing live as a “singer” so it’s all still nerve-racking and confusing to me but I’m working on building my confidence around this.

In the studio I can have my comforts around me like junk food and dim lighting and I can sit down in sweatpants and a hoodie, but as a performer (female as well) there are pressures to come out of my shell and put on a show.. Which I’m okay with, but for someone who’s preference is to be alone in my studio, this can be a bit daunting at first. Nothing a little practice and persistence can’t change though! Have to mention your track “My Love” your production is on point not to mention that sax, much love. What inspired this tracks creation and what did you enjoy most about putting this track together?

Thank you! That sax is actually a sample taken from a drum kit, but it was originally on an old Omarion song. When I first heard the sample the sax took a seat in my soul and I knew I had to do something with it so I added some drums and stuff while thinking of a melody for vocals.

I think I enjoyed recording this one the most because I was feeling really upset and needed to get those lyrics out of mind so I could move on. I think once I put the song out it was a huge relief for me and emotionally I was able to let go of some personal things.

When I listen to that song, it’s now a gentle reminder to myself to never again let myself get into that position I was in as a woman & lover. Musical Recommendations? Xavier Omar. Daley. KEV. Your favourite non-canon ship?: Um. Out of all of them, ‘s probably Ninth Doctor/Rose Tyler/Jack Harkness, because... because.

What is the rarest rare pair (that you ship)?: I don’t have numbers, but I think it might be F!Shep/Hackett. That or Boss/Johnny/Aisha.

What is your most fluffy + happy ship?: My Ren Shepard/Kaidan. They get their happy ending and are just good people overall. Excluding OC/canon character ships, then it’s probably Garrus/Tali, because they’re so cute it hurts, istg.

A non-canon ship that should be canon?: Yeah, I’m not wading into this one because sometimes ships are Not Canon and that’s okay and it’s never been my end goal. (I kind of stood on the edges of ship wars like “???? who cares??? ship it anyway?”)

What ship represents the kind of relationship you’d love to have?: all of them? lol. Um, again, veering into OC/canon character territory, but my Adaar and Josephine have like, my ideal relationship. They’ve got great communication, they’re adorable, and they shore each other up when needed.

What is a character you can only imagine in one particular ship? Uh...I guess, just because of the way the games handle it, I really can’t see Liara/anyone else other than Shepard, because yeah. Yeah.

What is the first ship you had? Baby’s v. first ship might have been Morticia/Gomez, but I didn’t even know what shipping was at the time. Actual involvement in an fandom, I think the earliest one was Elliot Stabler/Olivia Benson (ooof, someone pls go back and shake 16-y/o me).

Is there a type of ship you always go for? All kinds. Tol and smol. Two messed up people supporting each other in the best ways they can. Grumpy + little ball of sunshine or two grumps, or ships that kick ass together.
