"to love was to lose" wanderer x reader

(angst, hurt/no comfort), this was something i initially wrote for a mutual to get back at them for the angst they sent me but i posted it later as you can see.

gn reader, unspecified pronouns or descriptions of reader, other than hands. no beta we die like real alphas (literally)

to love was to lose.

thats what he learned.

through endless memories of his dwelling past, hes learned time and again that love, platonic, romantic, or any sort of affections in general were not for him. they never were. they always ended with him being the one hurt, the one having to live through the suffering and grief of the loss of something and someone he cherished most.

his "heart" was always the one to be shattered, treated like a useless piece of nothing; abandoned, left in the cold. he gave it away, foolishly, only to never see it again.

but you returned it to him, the moment even a small sliver of your sunshine shone into a minor, practically unnoticeable crack in his high, hard walls, everything came tumbling down.

you gave him purpose. you gave him life. you gave him a purpose for his new life.

he walked this new open road for you and you alone.

the feeling of your hand in his…it felt so warm, so surreal to feel someone else's warm palm against his own.

you held his fragile heart in the palm of your hands.

…but he didnt understand why your hand felt so cold now.

it was always so warm, it always brought him the most content feeling; the way your fingers traced idly over his hard knuckles, the way your thumb rubbed circles on the inside of his hand, the way your warmth would always be there...the way he would instantly know he was at home and peace whenever your fingers were intertwined.

why was it so different now?

your hand was limp in his, and it had gotten cold. so, unbearably cold.

he didn't even recognize it as your own anymore. it felt so...different. the opposite of what it would have usually been.

how did he let this happen? how could he let another slip through his fingertips?

naturally? he blames you.

you were the reason he let his guard down.

you gave him hope.

you gave him a reason to move forward, even on this sad, miserable plane of existence that has done nothing but hurt him time and again.

you made him unconsciously utter the words he forbid himself to say for so long.

"I love you, [Name]."

he said it. not often, but he said it. and he always meant it.

you promised you'd stay and he believed you.

when you said forever, he knew, that deep down, you didnt mean it. and yet, he was still hopeful, that this "love" would be everlasting.

you're no different from all the others.

he willingly gave his heart to you, and you ran away with it, off to a life of where he cannot follow.

he can only wish he could. in fact, he wants to.

you reminded him, after so long, that love was never for him.

and it never will be. not ever again.
