Paul & Richard kiss

Little post about one of my favorite kisses from the 2022 tour. There's a few different angles already "giffed", but I needed this particular sequence to write about.

The beginning is so cool with Paul's somewhat challenging look, like "okay, here we go, bring it on!"

The guitarists get close to each other and keep prolonging the final notes of Auslaender. Paul makes a gesture with his right hand, I'm not really sure what he's trying to do - tease Richard that he'll spoil something with his guitar stings?

Anyway, Richard remains unphased. He lifts his gaze at the other man and soon... Ohhh, you can easily tell when the idea comes to his mind.

He starts smirking mischievously and all his attention gets focused on Paul's cute little nose. Not for the first time though - we could watch the little pat on Paul's nose from Richard earlier on (2019, obviously the end of Puppe):

But what Richard does here is plain off limits. He tickles his fellow guitarist's nose with his predatory gaze and lips stretched into an extremely evil grin for almost 5 seconds. He stays alert, though, for any signs of Paul's disapproval, and when the rhythm guitarist moves his head, probably slightly annoyed anyway, Richard hesitates for a moment. But obviously seeing that Paul is hardly angry (we can't see it from this angle, but Richard certainly can and I believe that it is the case here), he continues his mischief for another while.

Now, I've watched this moment several times and couldn't believe it actually happened. At the beginning I thought Richard was messing with Paul's guitar head. I mean, are they even serious?! A nose tickling session?! Bloody hell! I can't with these two!! Is there anybody who can?!

Okay, another angle. And what do we have next, an annoyed Paul being like "Richard, what the hell"? Nope, of course not. We see Richard grabbing the back of the neck of a broadly smiling Paul, allowing all this like "sure this idiot right here is the biggest dork you'll ever see, but how can I get annoyed at somebody I love..." He prepares for the kiss, his chin lifted, his lips plumped, his eyes closed, and...

And the last angle... It always gets me and makes me truly, truly weak... I've seen many kisses, experienced and keep experiencing quite a few myself, but never have I seen anybody that entirely cheerful and smiling into a kiss as Richard is here. I'm suprised he was even able to kiss Paul with his lips so widely stretched into a grin. The pure joy, happiness and love for the slightly shorter man simply beams from his face with an otherwordly intensity. And when the kiss, by far not as brief as in the earlier shows, is finally ended, he looks at Paul with his eyes confessing the overwhelming feelings yet again.

Clearly deciding all what has happened in this very moment between the guitarists is fairly enough and satisfying for now, Richard lets his beloved bandmate go, probably remembering Paul's favorite places for such intimate interactions are behind the drumkit, under the B-stage, anyway, definitely not in the spotlight. The guitarists part their ways, go back to their reality, already thinking about Du Riechst So Gut intro, and it's only us, the fans, left, who need to come to terms with the fact we've just seen something we may likely never experience ourselves...

Paulchard kiss-evolution (2019 - 2024)

I think several users have already done something similar, but I just love talking about and analyzing Paulchard, so here are my two cents on their evolution of endearments or, in other words:

The kiss-evolution (2019 – 2024)

2019

Their stage kisses started in 2019, I think in Barcelona on the 1st of June – pride month. They repeated it a couple of times, but definitely not on every concert. The kiss in Moscow got quite a lot of attention, because it was seen as (and surely also meant to be) a protest against the oppression of LGBTQ-people in Russia.

So it started out as a political statement, with the personal relationship of Paul and Richard not being the focus of this action. And their kisses definitely looked like that.

Shy, timid, with pursed and tighly closed lips. Their faces and bodys being as far away from each other as possible (not everytime, but quite often), their body contact being very quick and short. There was eye contact and also some smiles but after the kiss either Paul or Richard retreated quickly, turning around, walking away. No lingering hands or glances.

Some of their kisses were also with open or just half closed eyes and overall just quick pecks like here (if not stated otherwise, GIFs by @mrsfitzgerald ):

The following is probably my favourite 2019 kiss, for several reasons:

they are standing closer together for a longer time, that kiss is so innocent somehow and so sweet – probably of that little hesitation from both of them – and also because of Schneider in the background <3 I LOOOVED that reaction!!

There was the picture from the Moscow-kiss on the official Rammstein-Instagram page and that photo also got released on a t-shirt that is still sold in the Rammstein shop :)

2022

Finally the tour could continue after the two year long break because of the pandemic. I had the feeling the whole band was relieved and happy they were allowed to play again. I had become a die hard Rammstein and Paulchard fan in the meantime, so I was reaaally curious if they will keep the kissing – and they did!! To me, this was a surprise, as the whole „getting attention to get a political statement across“ was kind of worn off by then...but they kept it, this time more as a show-element. The kisses were staged - or at least it was clear, that they had these 2-3 minutes in the Ausländer outro, where they would be in the spotlight and could do whatever shenanigans they were up to... there wasn't a kiss at every concert, but almost.

They were getting much more comfortable with kissing, especially Richard! I often had the feeling that he was celebrating and tasting (ha!) the moment in the spotlight with Paul. Richard more than once played with the audience, sometimes Paul was teasing Richard and they were both having lots of fun – that was obvious! They weren't running away right after the kiss anymore or were immediately averting their gaze - Richard at least.

I had the feeling, that for Paul, Richards intense (eye) contact was sometimes still too much, he almost always backed away first or broke the eye contact. With Richard, this was never the case as far as I remember – Richard often gave his everything into the kiss, which brought us some of the most amazing slow-mos up to this day! <3 Like this one here:

There were a few kisses that were definitely NOT pecks anymore, look at this:

There were double kisses, they both weren't kissing with pressed and pursed lips anymore, but even (almost) open mouthed or were closing their lips just at the last second, like here:

They were also much more hands on (on necks and cheeks), and hugs, so many hugs...!

And then of course that absolute favourite kiss of mine, that last kiss in Mexico – that heart-wrenching and movie-like kiss which I have watched god-knows-how-often...but just look at it and tell me they are just good buddies...naah... (video by humberto_king_of_angmar on Instagram)

2023

Then there was the 2023 tour, which had an overall different vibe than the 2022 tour, and I think everyone knows why. It didn't start out with many cute interactions between Paul and Richard, let alone kisses. Then we had what should be the last ever „classic Ausländer-outro“ kiss during one of the concerts in Munich – both of them were kneeling and when they kissed, Till rushed forward and made fun of it. Together with my overall gloomy mood this was just too much :(

They started kissing again – but at different times and not for show. I had the feeling during this tour it was mostly Paul supporting Richard on stage through small caresses, hugs and kisses (which were often initialized by Paul). I remember that absolutely unexpected and overwhelming „Puppe -kiss“ in Bern (because I saw it with my own eyes, heh :) (Original video by rebeccaxmuller on instagram)

In 2023 the kisses were not for show, not for the audience – but only for them. There was no „teasing the audience“ anymore, no „scream louder and I might kiss him again!“. It was all about seeking and giving comfort. For example here (original video by heatliedave on Insta):

The tour went on and the atmosphere between the band members relaxed again. There were hugs and kisses behind the drums and in the dark, giving each other a peck when returning to their places – they were definitely not doing that for the audience, because only eagle eyed fans saw that... and there were other, more subtle caresses:

And of course there was that kiss in the rain during „Ohne dich“ where a kiss on the neck wasn't enough – for both of them:

2024

2024 was a continuation of 2023 – the scripted kisses during „Ausländer“ were history and also not attempted anymore, but we had a lot of „natural feeling“ kisses – this year it seemed to me that Richard was more often the initiator:

-with the caption „Thank you, Italy, I am impressed, so hot but still so energetic and so much love“ on Richards official Instagram and I would bet my right arm that he was WELL aware of that double meaning!

The whole atmosphere was very relaxed, they had so much fun and their kisses and caresses seemed to be so naturally and spontaneously. The sexyness, which some of their kisses from 2022 had, was (mostly) gone, but replaced with a warm feeling of trust and authenticity. Which is maybe even better than sexyness :)

We all love pictures with our fav guitarists kissing or hugging, but I'd like to share some other, slightly less popular photos I find something truly special about:)

Here they look SO MUCH alike. Almost like the same person one frame later. They're wearing matching outfits - black pants with extra belts, black jerseys, sleeves (Richard's a little longer and with red element, but with the red lighting on Paul too it's not much of a difference). They are in almost identical positions with the left leg on Richard's podium, their guitars are in a position in which you can't tell they're different, and most of all - they're rocking the same beautiful smile of pure joy of playing together.

They look SO happy here. I don't know if it was raining (looks a little bit like it), but they don't seem to be bothered at all, they're so much like we don't care, the world is ours!

Again extremely happy guitarists. Here not so much in the world is ours mode, more like the one is the entire world for the other. And nothing else matters...

Now grumpy guitarists for a change. This pic makes me laugh so much. Aww babes, who stole your morning coffee? They BOTH look in such a bitchy mood:D

This photo has such a strong bride and groom vibe. Only Schneider as the priest is missing;)

That's probably only an illusion, but I got the feeling Paul shows a thumbs up while Richard is just about show s thumbs down. Also Paul is visibly pleased, while Richard has rather a scowl on his face. Would make a perfect picture for Richard's words "when I'm like NO, he always goes YES".

Here with those little smiles they look like two schoolgirls gossiping during the break:D Richard obviously smoking, standing on a little stair (I saw the fuller version of this pic but can't find it now:( ), Paul standing on the ground. I've noticed a few times that when they stand next to each other, Paul tries to make himself smaller, as if he didn't want Richard to cone across as barely any taller than him. Also, they both seem to have their mouths open, I wonder how they decide which one talks and which is forced to listen at the moment. Paul probably has it easier because Richard has to take drags of his cigarette:D

Guitarists in black with fans (there was a lady, similar age as the man in between, next to Richard, but I cut her off, sorry😶). I don't know where it's from, but I remember there was no other R+ bandmembers. Perhaps the guitarists flying somewhere together, just the two of them?😇

Such an interesting shot. There's something about their faces that makes them even more attractive when you see them next to each other like this. They really are the match made in heaven...

Ok, no Richard here, but that enhanced super charming smile was for him - Paul looked exactly where his fellow guitarist was sitting. I wish we could see Richard's face at this very moment too...

Hi I’m back back, back again! With more questions!

The fandom calls Paul and Richard guitars husbands right? But to help a relationship status to married you have to gradually progress through the stages of like: pining, mutual pining, dating, boyfriends and then finally married.

I was wondering what pictures or gifs/videos represent those stages for our dearest guitarists?

If I forgot one feel free to add one or remove one if it doesn’t have any fitting content! 😌 🖤

I have to admit, though, I found this ask a bit tricky to answer at first. I kept going back and forth, trying to establish a clear timeline for Paul and Richard’s, let’s call it loosely, “relationship.” In some ways, that’s possible. At the start of the band’s history, we have a popular example of looks exchanged that could definitely be interpreted as “pining” or “longing”:

Later on, there were repeated moments on stage where they looked for closeness or looked out for each other:

Nowadays, there are wonderful moments on stage filled with cheekiness, emotions, joy, and surely also some kind of love between two people who’ve worked together for 30 years, experienced so many life situations together, endured a lot in the band's life and in general..:

And yet... the story between Paul and Richard always seems incredibly dynamic to me. They started out as young musicians who discovered a lot of common ground in their musical visions (I think I recall Richard saying something along the lines of “he completes me”). At the same time, they were also musical rivals in some ways, given they played the same instrument. Two people with strong opinions and firm points of views in things, who sometimes wouldn’t accept any other viewpoint but their own. They are so similar, yet have their struggles, especially to see that they're so similar it seems.

But they always manage to come back together, no matter how difficult working together might be - even going as far as seeking help for their communication (Olsen Involtini apparently played a big role in ensuring that harmony was quickly restored, as mentioned here). They maybe do it simply because they see the bigger picture. They see that enduring personal differences is worth it for the good of the band. They share the same drive to make things happen and, over the years, have learned to listen to one another and give each other space to express themselves.

If we indulge in the “Paulchard” fantasy, we can find moments of connection (body contact or just looking out for each other) at various points in the band’s history. It’s difficult for me to identify a clear chronology here - whether it’s the 90s, the challenging Mutter era, or the MiG tour...:

Of course, their warmth towards each other has exponentially increased in recent years! Longing, hugs, kisses, comforting each other, or just being there for one another.... And sometimes really taking their time with each other during these interactions, like in Frankfurt for the plane watching 🥹.

It feels like they can express these things more freely now, in their more mature years, after all their shared experiences - or at least it appears that way. And for that, I’m very happy.

So, yes. Paulchard interactions are varied, dynamic, and ever-changing, just as most likely a relationship between people is. 🤍
