AS-Zirconium is a nice dusty wasteland map with some very cool industrial scenery.

Some of the underground sections remind me of that creepy bunker from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. where the wish granter was. :)

i find interesting the way the weapon designs in the Unreal series advanced & changed overtime, both visually and mechanically. the way the designs changed completely between UT99 and UT2K4, the weapons cut from Unreal and the ones that didn't make it to UT99, the weapons added in 2K4, the stinger minigun in Unreal turning into a regular minigun in tournament, the rocket launcher mechanics in UT3, there's a lot to be said about it all - though it's been a little too long since i've played all the games to really remember and make points on it, maybe some day.
maybe as a challenge for myself i could try to remake the UT99 weapons in my own style, while trying to adhere to the source designs, maybe the Unreal (+ return to Na-pali) weapons after, if i'm up to it (and maybe the UT3 designs though i see less point in that).
(i'm not mentioning U2, UT4, & both UC games, because i haven't played them yet, and know next to nothing about them, sorry)

can you draw the "Divisor" playermodel from Unreal Tournament 2004? you can deviate from the original design if you want,
there might not be many good reference images on the net so just ask me and i can try to grab a few screenshots for you specifically.
i love you, i really do, and i appreciate that you give me things to draw, BUT WHY DO YOU KEEP ASKING FOR THINGS YOU KNOW DAMN WELL I'M NOT CAPABLE OF DOING

Unreal Tournament got one of those fancy Secret Level episodes and, as one of the nerds who cares a weird amount about the setting of those games, I decided to talk about it

perhaps I will get more things on GOG. I admire their dreamlist program. Its an actually like, astonishing work of preservation for a lot of those games. plus they actually like, keep old games around for purchase in forms I could easily burn onto discs if I wanted to, so thats something. IDK what the general consensus is of GOG. As a massive piracy pervert I tend to just play things that way when I cant afford them, but 10$ for monkey island and other such games is pretty reasonable all things considered. -shrug- much to consider.

Trying to get into UT2004 but honestly I don't like it and think UT99 is better. Where is my beloved Enforcer pistol? Why is it replaced with a crappy peashooter of an assault rifle? Why is the Time to Kill higher than it was in UT99? I'm sticking with UT99 instead.

I really, really do love UT2004. Out of all the games for the UT series I own, 2004 was definitely the best. Not to say that 3 wasn't fun, they ALL are. But 2004... Nostalgia for me <3
With that said GIMME QUESTIONS RAAAA

ok, this gonna be like, an infodump, but your mention of the witchyworld skybox, and nostalgia you got me going through all the games I played back then and the incredibly strong sense of wonder and wanting to explore I had
Tumblr media
for me specifically, around the time i played Tooie i was far more invested in the actual world itself then the skyboxes, particularly with how simplistic they were then
Tumblr media
but then i'd see shit like this and go "FRENCH FRIES!!!!!!!!" and now i have unlocked a very distinct memory of why i liked witchyworld it definitely laid a foundation for me, you move a little later and get things like UT2004
Tumblr media
in particular for me though

showdown town BKNB, you could see so much around the place it got me to start paying attention to details in games and i spent so much time just, like, staring at things i couldn't touch/interact with a big spooky mansion off in the distance, fields, a bridge and winding path away from the town, a castle and an oil rig and of course, like, looking back on it as an adult, it looks like straight unfettered ass, but I still remember that sense of "i want to go there, why is that there, that's so cool"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in the town itself, everything was strangely unique for how similar it all was? all of these places have names and signs even though you'd never even look at them normally, apartments with balconies, shops and services and all these things and of course it's all so small, it all seems like superficial, "bare minimum" details now, but this is where i had some of those first memories of looking at worlds and soaking up details and being fascinated with the smallest things, even if as an adult I look at all of it and go "this looks like ass", I still remember those feelings
Tumblr media
you'd go to the test-o-track and the ice handling area has metal tiling and pipes visible underneath the fake snow and ice
Tumblr media
you go to the offroad section and the grating is cracked and warped
Tumblr media
i loved nutty acres so god damn much, the way the terrain was stitched and "fake", the wood was made of metal, the windup wildlife, the TV sky, the big lamp as a "sun". the clockwork clouds and you could even GO UP THERE and walk around on the clouds as the moved, the big ass gears turning around that you could sit on it almost reminds me of Alterna, in a way? aaaaaaaaaa i'm rambling so much at god damn 1:30am but you're like the first other person i've seen in my damn life that openly talks about a shared love for these games and nostalgic feelings and awawawawaawawaeofuhweoafewa :) you're very cool for that
I've always admired how Rare creates their skyboxes, and one of the reasons why I think people should give Nuts & Bolts another chance.
I love exploring Showdown Town and seeing so much detail and little easter eggs the team added in, many of them being fan service and I love it, it's a neat little town, plus I love going to the top of LOG's factory and seeing Ghoulhaven Hall (from Grabbed by the Ghoulies) in the distance.
I love playing Splatoon 2 & 3 and exploring Inkopolis Square, where you can see Inkopolis Tower in the distance and the destroyed NILs head in Hammerhead Bridge (in Splatoon 3).
Seeing the Banjo & Kazooie mountain in the first Viva Pinata is also a nice easter egg, plus that game has some neat skyboxes and world design too!

ONS-Castaway is a very small tropical themed map, with some cool looking water. These tropical maps always look better in-game, as for some reason UT2004 turns the screen brightness way up whenever it's running, and maps like these end up looking very warm and pretty as a result.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately, it also seems to be be a victim of "the creator didn't bother adding distance fog", so the underwater area and horizon look really strange! Still a nice little island, though.

I just remembered one of Strange Aeon's levels being like a moving train/carriage in the desert or something.
Or rather, what seems like a fortress on wheels in a large desert.
Tumblr media
(Screenshot of a ICARUSLIV3S video)
It reminded me of that Convoy map from UT2004 and even a map inspired by it in TF2.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seems like a cool idea that could be done in a new Doom or any game id could make in the future.
Specially because it's a different take on moving train levels due to the wider space.

Thinking about Unreal
Remember back when Epic Games did more than just work on Fortnite and make a shitty game launcher? I do.
Unreal Tournament 2003/2004 were games I was playing long before I had any right to. You can't legally acquire them anymore, unless buying a used copy from somebody. But we're in a time and place now, where a viable successor to Unreal ought to be coming around. The boomer shooter revival was awesome, and I hope there's still more of it to come.
And I'm not just talking about the tournament games, but the actual first game Unreal, deserves a successor.
*sigh*
03/04 veered into a weird aesthetic that hardly fits with its sequel or previous iteration, but I think it's my favorite. It's almost like the predecessor to Gears of War, a hint of 40k and other sci-fi concepts thrown together to create these awesome gladiators.
Tumblr media
(Source: Gmod Workshop: UT2004 Juggernaut Playermodels)
The Juggernauts were cool. They're all some kind of criminal, with the exception of Arclite. Genetically modified to be big, aggressive super soldiers. I think my favorite is Rylisa, based on her bio.
Tumblr media
"Former Union Leader of Ore Miners' Local #732G, Rylisa found the bribes offered to her by an Imperial official to be an insult, so she cut off his hands and used his subdermal ID chips to access his accounts, netting her life in the Allerian Ice Mines."
I'd like to think she doesn't get along with the rest of her team much.
Headcanon is after the tournament, these guys were either "liquefied" or repurposed, the more stable trustworthy maybe becoming privateers for the Liandri Corporation.
