I've always thought the story of Soviet Moskva training shoe (a seemingly unofficial but secretly licensed take on the Adidas gazelle) and it's adoption by Soviet and post-soviet special forces like the VDV paratroopers and the elite spetsnaz is the most William Gibson-esque bizarre globalisation tale. The Japanese brand Reproduction of Found did an interesting reissue of them a few years back which brought this into the weirder world of a reproduction of a reproduction.
