For the Writer's Would You Ever: is there an AU for Customs & Duties (or another work!) that you'd like to write but haven't gotten the chance to yet?
Writer's Would You Ever?
Yes, absolutely! There's a completely ludicrous F.allout 4 AU that I maintain makes a lot of sense: it's still Boston, there's still skullduggery, they're still accidentally-on-purpose ruining each other's lives. There's just ... vastly more lasers and radiation damage and mid-century pop than there is in the original version.
Under the cut, because. well. I want to maintain a modicum of decorum on this blog.
(The cliff notes version of FO4 is. uh. Well. Imagine a world where post WWII western powers went all in on nuclear power, and then that October 23rd 2077 the world ended when the US and China blasted each other and everyone else off the face of the earth in a single day of nuclear war. With me? okay. Boston, 2287: ambient radiation is down, the Minutemen are trying to come back from the brink of organizational extinction after the Quincy Massacre, a mysterious organization called the Institute is kidnapping Commonwealth residents and replacing them with synths (functionally, lab-grown humans, many of whom don't actually know they're synths) to an unknown purpose, a similarly secretive organization called the Railroad is breaking synths out of their captivity within the Institute, and the B.rotherhood of Steel (a quasi-hereditary (except when not) military organization descended from a rogue Army unit (it's a long story) that believes that all advanced technology is too dangerous for civilians to control and that they must, therefore, take control of it for the common good) has rocked up to Boston in a giant metal zeppelin named for Arthurian legend. I mention this because B.oS ranks, too, take their cues from Arthurian lore and chivalric orders. They tend to think that anyone or anything that's not human-born human is inherently dangerous and tend to shoot first and ask questions later.)
Nellie's still a widow, still has two kids and a total unwillingness to look her bereavement in the eye and make peace with it ... she just also has a two-headed cow named Aunt Abigail, a mostly-two-hundred year old fishing boat that's held together with duct tape and goodwill towards man, a mutually beneficial scavenging-for-repairs relationship with the robot crew of USS Constitution, and a new-to-her solar panel array which is promptly stolen requisitioned by the new-in-town B.oS. So begins her mutually antagonistic relationship with the asshole tin-can Paladin Norrington, which is not improved by the B.oS's (non-canonical) attempts to confiscate the moonshot rockets from the Constitution's crew, and the deteriorating relationship between the Brotherhood and the Commonwealth on the whole.
I have written a snippet here and there, but here's the longest, mostly coherent bit:
The next time Paladin Norrington saw Elinor Treat was at Fort Independence, sitting against the massive stone walls with a minuteman's laser across her knees and her usual cap drawn down over her eyes. Training day, the General (another short, tired woman) had said, and the exhausted residents strewn about the courtyard certainly seemed to back that up. "Elinor," he said, a little uncertainly, and when she did not reply, he called her name again. "Oh, it's you," she said, cracking an eye. "I didn't recognize your voice without your helmet. Come to pay me, have you?" "No," he said, startled. "Disappointing." She closed her eyes again, looking like she'd fall asleep in a moment. Feeling like an idiot, he said he wasn't expecting to see her here, so he had nothing to pay her with. Elinor snorted, accidentally whacking herself in the face with the barrel of her gun, before coming sighing and grumbling to her feet. It wasn't an impressive sight, but she managed to convey a kind of understated menace, even when she had to crane her neck a bit to glare.
I will furthermore add my tags from one of those "the last character you wrote for in the last video game you played: how are they doing?" - D.anse is the in-game B.oS companion and, slight spoilers, his dogmatic adherence to protocol does not save him:
#i DO think you could swap jimothy for danse. i do think the arcs of ' man defined by his rank and military prowess gets fucking bodied; #by realizing the organization he serves objectively sucks and is going to be the actual death of him and furthermore; #is willing to let that organization do it because of Reasons. ' are actually pretty similar. #that said. the more important thing is jimothy encountering Rocket Powered USS Constitution and the Nautical Robots; #I think he would enjoy himself immensely. or die of apoplexy. either way. #customs and duties aus
#thank you for the ask kind friend!#this. god. i love this au so much. it is so dear to my heart.#nellie's always defined herself by her ability to survive anything. well. babe. guess what. survive post-apocalyptic boston.#also. i think giving jimothy n power armor is just a fundamentally entertaining concept. harder to kill and harder to know;#and infinitely more annoying to nellie because of it.

China simulates attack on aircraft carrier USS Nimitz during second day of exercise near Taiwan 🇹🇼
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 04/09/2023 - 19:44 in Military, War Zones
China has launched precision simulation attacks against foreign targets, including the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz that is currently in the region. This is the second day of exercises of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) flying near Taiwan.
The information was disclosed by security sources cited by Reuters. They say that, in addition to the simulated attacks on Taiwan and the main Taiwanese targets, the Chinese People's Liberation Army carried out simulated attacks on "foreign military targets" one of these targets being the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz.
The simulated attacks take place on the second day of what Beijing called “determined and effective measures in protecting the national sovereignty and territorial integrity” of the People's Republic of China. The reason for these measures is the visit of the President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, to the United States. Political scientists note the fact that the "measures" occur immediately after the official visit of French President Emmanuel Macron, accompanied by Ursula von der Leyen.
These measures take the form of large-scale exercises in Taiwan. In fact, Taiwan is currently surrounded on all sides by Chinese military platforms. This includes 70 military aircraft, nine warships and at least one aircraft carrier. This siege happened on the first day of the exercise. According to military experts, the main objective was to " Immediately establish control of air and maritime space".
China's Ministry of Defense has issued a strong warning message to justify what is happening now. According to the circulated text, Chinese actions were dictated to prevent attempts by separatists and foreign forces to establish an "independent Taiwan".
The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense said in a statement that on Sunday it detected 71 aircraft of the People's Liberation Army of China and 11 warships near Taiwan at 4 p.m., with 35 of the warplanes crossing the midline of the Taiwan Strait and entering the southwestern part of the island's ADIZ. The Taiwanese military spotted J-15s, Chinese navy fighters based on aircraft carriers, among the aircraft.
According to the Chinese state media, the purpose of the exercises is specifically to simulate precision attacks. In a broader context, Beijing wants to dissuade “the separatists fighting for independence”.
Observers in the region, as well as the Taiwanese media, reported the presence of 58 Chinese aircraft during the second day of the exercise. Along with them, Beijing sent a second H-6 bomber. Thus, the region currently has two bombers extorted by the Su-30, J-16, J-11 and J-10 fighters. It was a part of these fighters that was sighted near the Taiwan Air Defense Identification Zone [ADIZ].
No Video sorry.
Taiwan said it will not increase the conflict, despite the presence of an aircraft carrier, ships, bombers, fighters and nine warships in the region. Taiwan also announced that it will not provoke disputes and will respond to each other.
In addition, the United States again urged China to “not change the status quo” in the Taiwan Strait. “We are confident that we have sufficient resources and capabilities in the region to ensure peace and stability,” U.S. diplomacy said.

About Baron
Independent OC: Supernatural and Doctor Who Fandoms
"Baron" was born Berenice Griselda Lethbridge-Stewart but quickly did her best to distance herself from the mouthful. Her father was a workaholic which greatly contributed to her parents' divorce and Baron's resentful attitude towards him. Baron and her sister Kate ended up split across the Atlantic before the age of thirteen: Baron growing up in the US and Kate in Britain. Baron joined the Navy which got her through med school. Her first encounter with the supernatural was aboard the USS Daedalus. A pair of hunters managed to save her and a deckhand but the rest of the crew weren't so lucky. She was honorably discharged after the incident and eventually settled into private practice. Civilian life.
Only...not quite settled and not quite civilian. Baron, like many of those who survived supernatural tragedies, became entangled in the hunter network: preferring to offer medical support over going out on hunts herself. She now runs a secret clinic out of her garage when she isn't working as surgical staff at a friend's private practice. Baron is usually found in punk rock attire with a harsh band of red sprayed across her eyes. At the heart of her motivations, she wants to help people...and she has no problem breaking rules to do so. She is often much more afraid than she leads people to believe but it'll take a lot to make her back down from a fight. Appearance: Muscular (most notably in her arms). 5'4". Mid to late thirties. Pale with shoulder length auburn or strawberry blonde hair depending. Aquiline/Roman nose. Tattoos on her right forearm, hips, and left clavicle. 14mm gauged lobe piercings on both ears. One orbital and one helix piercing on her right ear. Warning! Baron has PTSD - panic attacks, flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance of triggers. Goes by Dr. Baron Stewart. May or may not have gotten the nickname Bloody Baron in hunter circles.
Fun Additional Info:
Sexuality: She identifies as Lesbian because of who she forms romantic attachments to but is technically Bisexual.
Hobbies/Likes: Wrestling, kickboxing, gardening, darts, billiards, reading medical texts and biographies, playing video games, Halloween, swimming, sailing, watching sports (hockey, baseball, and cricket), playing sports with friends/neighborhood league (basketball, baseball, and roller derby), camping, kayaking, weight lifting, running, and attending rock concerts.
Dislikes: Monsters, Demons, work socials, parties, wearing dresses, and getting her photo taken

Being the worst regime of democratic putrescence to dump the Petrol Dollars via the frozen trade relationship to displace the monetary entanglement of America appears the defunct federation of Malaysia may be disintegrated by the looming monetary war amid the ending dominance of Petrol Dollars in 2024. The monetary crisis of devaluation triggered by the one-sided sanctions can become another financial meltdown in Malaysia and America. Indeed the devaluation of Ringgit and the monetary strategy of Malaysia has failed to curb the surging price index of healthcare products with staggering price tags at this moment including eye drops and skincare products. Malaysia is no longer a trade nation to support the fading monetary of America in the region. The obtrusive economic strategy of Malaysia is not supporting the pauperized families under the ruling of federation. It suggests the globally shriveled monetary circulation of America needs to be boosted by enlarging its circulation in other regions. This includes the enlargement of military operations such as enlarging the naval deployments to recapture the hijacked monetary zone of Borneo for American Dollars where the unstinted irruption of Dutch warships and USS Michigan may be be deployed in the harbour of Jesselton for naval patronage and the restitution of sovereignty and independence in Borneo. A naval commando operation to be performed by littoral warships may help accomplish the mission for the politically hijacked territory of Borneo. Definitely the colonised territory of Borneo has the option to cease the partnership in the federation of Malaysia. Likewise the royal constitution of Johor may be enacted to end its signed partnership in the federation of Malaysia amid the dethroned regalia of Johor to reclaim its surrended territory under the treaty of federation despite Johor was the colonial prison of Britain before the formation of Malaysia. The constitutional split of America may be escalated to end the presidential nomination for bi-partisan election where 2024 is the final year of the accustomed presidential nomination for male candidacy in America. In future, the political intervention from as social media including Facebook and Twitter is likely to change the fading nomination for presidential election.

Description: In September 1962, when Martin Dockery landed in Saigon, he was a young, determined, idealistic U.S. Army first lieutenant convinced of America’s imminent victory in Vietnam. While most of the twelve thousand U.S. military advisors in-country at the time filled support positions in Saigon and other major cities, Dockery was one of a handful of advisors assigned to Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) combat units. For eight months Dockery lived and fought in the heart of the Mekong Delta with an ARVN infantry battalion on missions and operations that often lasted several days. And for most of that time, whether tramping through the steaming, leech-infested jungle, hiking across canals, or engaging in sudden firefights, Dockery was the only American soldier with the unit. Dockery’s solitary assignment with ARVN during the infancy of U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia afforded him an understanding of Vietnam far more profound than most other Americans. Lost in Translation is his riveting account of the largely overlooked role of American combat advisors in the war. As he vividly evokes the sounds, smells, and vistas of the country and its people, Dockery depicts an army poorly trained, incompetent, and unwilling to fight for a government every bit as corrupt as that of the French colonial empire it replaced. Yet even worse than his daily fare of isolation, frustration, and danger was Dockery’s growing conviction that the advisory program was doomed. Though these dedicated, highly motivated advisors would do their best and persevere under the most trying circumstances, they would not succeed. The author’s eyewitness testimony provides inescapable evidence that as early as 1962 the writing was already on the wall concerning the outcome of the Vietnam War. Although it would take U.S. leaders more than a decade to divine what the young officer learned in a single year, Dockery’s personal and penetrating analysis of the war—which he presented in a lecture at a Special Forces facility in Germany one week after his tour in Vietnam ended—proved chillingly accurate. Those who send soldiers to war should consider the realities and truths within these pages.

Everything Is Awesome
Finally made a long-anticipated trip to Legoland with J&K on Friday. We left early because we thought it would be really crowded, but we lucked out - I'd guess one week later and everyone would have been out of school, but we parked easily and walked right in.
The boy loved it, and we all had a great time. I hate to bite the hand that feeds us, but LL really has Disneyland beat on many fronts. All day we kept being impressed with how interactive it is. There are lots of Lego stations that allow the kids to really participate - build your car and try it on a race track, build a boat and put it on the river... Use your imagination AND learn about physics - I'm in. They also have several rides that the kids control - more than just twirling a teacup, they get to fly a helicopter and even drive a car with no adults allowed. In big news, J rode his first roller coaster! We loved seeing him having a blast while also getting more independent. (His mom didn't even cry. Well, maybe a little.) A personal highlight for me was the Legoland Brass Band - more of a second line than a marching band - with frequent stops for a ~10-min show.
They close at 6 (another bonus!) so we headed to our fave Carlsbad hotel, Ocean Palms, where J made friends and played tag while the grown-ups sat in the hot tub.
Saturday morning, we drove down to SD to the USS Midway. J was very excited about seeing an aircraft carrier, but then was disappointed when he realized there weren't any jets taking off from it. (Lesson learned in setting expectations.) Stopped for lunch at Lucha Libre Taqueria - good burritos, great street corn - then headed home.
Sunday, P had to fly to Vancouver, so we made the trek to LAX watch planes at In-N-Out... Huge success despite the lingering June gloom.
Monday we had lunch with Aunt Jeanne, Teresa, and Melanie, and Tuesday we hit the La Brea Tar Pits. (I had never been before - so interesting!) K&J headed for home Tuesday afternoon. It was a great week - back to life now... *sigh*

The Most Beautiful Ship in the World
[a ficlet inspired by the meeting between the Amerigo Vespucci and the USS Independence - read on Ao3 here]
1962, Mediterranean Sea
She saw the huge aircraft carrier approaching from afar. Leisurely slowing down to accost her, his mighty build unmistakable against the blue expanse of the calm sea.
Truth be told, she was used to it. Her catchy looks made more than one horn blow. Even ocean liners - notably a pretentious lot - used to give her the right of way and salute her with three loud honks of appreciation. It was meant to be a flattering gesture, and she used to gloat at it, back in the day; by now, she barely took note and moved on.
Now by her side – his untarnished hull giving away his young age – the carrier turned his light signal on, apparently determined to chat her up.
“Who are you?” He asked.
“Training ship Amerigo Vespucci,” she politely answered, “Italian Navy.” This should satisfy the boy’s curiosity enough, and hopefully establish that she was the one in familiar waters.
The other one signalled again.
“You are the most beautiful ship in the world.”
No crass whistling. Just a genuine compliment.
That was new.
“Oh, my.” She found herself faltering on her words. “Thank you.”
She reprised her course, not without a slight embarrassment at getting flustered that easily. The carrier though, not at all discouraged, gently matched her speed – no small feat for such an imposing, graceless craft.
“Don’t tell me you’re ditching me already,” he said in jest.
She glanced up at the fleet of fighter jets on his deck, their white, pointy tail fins glistening in the sun.
“Don’t you have anywhere important to be?”
“Not today. Waiting for the next NATO exercise. I’m the USS Independence, by the way… but you can call me Indy.”
Goodness gracious. Was he flirting, now?
“Well, Indy,” she countered, “before you get any funny ideas, let me ask you… how long have you been deployed?”
“Just three years.”
“Oh dear.”
A long moment of silence followed, interspersed by the lull of crashing waves and the squawking of seagulls. Now, she hadn’t meant to mortify him…
“But–” he added, with a remarkable presence of spirit, “I’ve served in Cuba and Puerto Rico already. Not entirely wet behind my ears, so to speak.”
“What I meant is… I’m not sure you realised, that I’m thirty years your senior.”
“You don’t show a day over fifteen, if I may say so.”
Let’s not tell him that her teak wood deck and her striped hull paint had been recently redone.
He accosted her some more, and from this near she noticed his sleek, functional outline against the sky. It wasn’t unpleasant in the least.
“You should know I’m an old-fashioned lady, and I’d rather do things the old-fashioned way.”
“No objections to that, Ma’am.” A cheerful plume of smoke blew from his funnel. “Getting to know you better will only be my pleasure.”
What with her line of work, she knew all too well the fervors and recklessness of young folks. Nonetheless, this one seemed to hold his conversation quite nicely, and to be resolute in his intentions. Which she could only appreciate, in accordance with her motto: “Not who begins, but who perseveres.”
“You know what, Indy? I love the Caribbean Sea this time of the year. And I might teach you a trick or two...”
And they sailed on, together. For how long, it is not known; but together they sailed, towards the setting sun.
~~~
(notes and tags under the cut)
What can I say in my defence? Apparently, anything that happens at sea strikes the romantic strings of my heart, and so here I am, anthropomorphizing and shipping... literal ships.
If you have any questions - how does that work? How do they communicate so efficiently or convey emotion? Why is she a she and he's a he? Why do they have genders, at all? Well, I do *not* have answers.
Life is short and nothing makes sense.
(Or:How Jaylah Went From Twisted Anti-Hero To Actual "Good Girl")
A strange woman wearing a green ring, a warrior from Earth's past and a seemingly sentient sphere...Sounds pretty weird, right? But this band of misfits came together for a reason, and the heroic crew of the Enterprise are soon about to learn that.
The woman, Jaylah, is the sole survivor of the space pirate clan Sitrian, the second-born daughter of its leader. Her family and her clan were wiped out years ago, by an evil man named Krall who she slew using her ring which, apparently, the universe bestowed upon her. She fueled it with the void in her soul, overcharging the ring with her corrupt willpower and avenged her family.
Afterwards, she embarked on a space adventure, meeting her two companions in the process. Now she has taken it upon herself to right all the wrongs in this universe...as its first Green Lantern!
When strange new villains arise, and sinister scoundrels poison the mind of the meek...only one person can save the day, and you will know her name.
June 1967 - An RA-5C going to come back for another try. This RA-5C Vigilante (BuNo 151727) is from heavy reconnaissance squadron RVAH-12 Speartips . RVAH-12 was assigned to Attack Carrier Air Wing 14 (CVW-14) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation (CVA-64) for a deployment to Vietnam from 29 April to 4 December 1967. This particular aircraft was delivered to the US Navy in April, 1965. The Aviation Saftey Network shows this aicraft was damaged beyond repair in a hard landing aboard USS Independence in late 1971 and upon return to port at NAS Rota, Spain, the aicraft was written off Jan 1972. 🌎www.iloveahangar.com 📷 Feel free to repost but please remember to tag us 👍😊 #aircraft #airforce #airshow #avgeek #aviation #aviationdaily #aviationgeek #aviationhistory #aviationlovers #aviationphotos #avnerd #instaaviation #militaryaviation #militaryaviationphotography #oldairplanes #navalaviator #planepics #navalaviation #fighterpilot #warbird #warbirds #ra5cvigilante #vietnamairwar https://www.instagram.com/p/CTUdO8dBO8b/?utm_medium=tumblr
Northrop Grumman's MQ-8C Fire Scout, the U.S. Navy's unmanned and autonomous helicopter system, made its second operational deployment and first deployment in the Indo-Pacific Area of Responsibility aboard the Independence-class coastal combat ship USS Jackson (LCS-6).
"While Fire Scout will still be active on the remaining coastal combat ships, the system is being built on the design of the Constellation-class frigate, most notably on the USS Constellation (FFG-62), as well as on other classes of ships," said Captain Dennis Monagle, U.S. Navy.
The MQ-8C Fire Scout continues to be deployed on coastal combat ships with future planned deployments in Constellation-class guided missile frigates and ground site operations under the Expeditionary Advance Base Operations concept, including potential logistical cargo paper. Other potential future functions for the MQ-8C include mine countermeasures and anti-submarine warfare.
The initial deployment of the MQ-8C Fire Scout was on board the USS Milwaukee (LCS-5) in the Caribbean Sea. He provided greater maritime intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and segmentation (ISR&T).
The MQ-8C Fire Scout supports advanced features, including the demonstration of manned and unmanned teams (MUMT), allowing the sharing of sensor information in a distributed force, further increasing survivability, reducing the risk and load of manned aircraft and increasing weapon capacity.
