thinking about city scoundrel again. i know their city aesthetic is specifically auroral and not remembered but like. there's still gotta be Influences from the city body, right. there's just gotta be. anyway what i'm saying is i think the citizens personify the city by way of a little bat chasing a star, for no reason in particular
#yin-thoughts#fallen london#fallen london spoilers#railway spoilers#the bat always has flowers around its ears of course. Of Course.#it's like. a very common mural. sometimes it's circling around the sun#sometimes it's looking up at it from the ground#sometimes (very rarely) it's even grasped it in its claws#but it's never without its star. it's like a national animal. like how eagles represent the US#idk. i really like thinking abt city scoundrel lore.#the actual location is hit or miss imo but the rp and headcanon opportunities of it are exquisite#scoundrelventures

the appearance of trains and train stations in media is being used to show the start, the end and the journey simultaneously because characters have been shown to start off in trains (beginning), travel in trains (growth) and then getting off the train at their stops (grown up/matured). Due to the number of people who uses trains to commute, in this essay I will-
#orv#honkai impact 3rd#hi3#I finished up HI3 chapter 35#and it ruined me#kind of#persona 5#because of train stations#kind of for#suzume#train doors and railways#they are getting me traumatized#every time i step on a train#shoutout to I love trains guy in asdf#also just realised#it’s the journey#while trains are impt#creators just use trains because everyone knows about them#trains

Help I have a project and I'm making progress on it and it feels a little too real what the fuck
#okay nobody told me that when you started spacing out from reality less#that actually real things would feel like#scarily real#I feel like I'm on a super tall walkway with nothing but a halfway up railway stopping me from falling down#I feel like an exposed nerve what the fuck#does everyone feel like this or is it just because I'm not used to it#because what the hell I understand past me's constant emotional overwhelm so much better now

there's this new passtime in fallen london that I'm kinda fixating on and it kinda feels like gambling but the only thing I'm betting (and losing 90% of the time) is my time
#youni originals#fallen london hearts game....#i COULD be doing something useful. like finding out why i stopped building my railway to hell. or exploring the upper river. but noooo#i'm playing the silly little cat and mouse minigame with terrible odds#i've managed to win exactly 9 times so far. and 7 of those were on the same run#king of knuckles you are the only bitch i respect. show up on my deck again please

I've arrived to the conclusion that trains are inherently gay in this game, 'cause building a straight railway is fucking impossible.
#Satisfactory#Lowkey starting to wonder how many people that uses that tag has blocked me by now#I could just have set up a truck circuit for this pretty short route#But fucking hell I'd rather deal with the one time headache that is building a railway#Than the constant worry of the truck running out of fuel because I fucked up the supply chain somewhere

No need to worry, the screams of fury emanating from her room are just because she made the terrible decision to read someone else’s list of the ‘100 Best Classic Fiction Works in English’
#Usually it wouldn't bother me that we disagree on some of the items on the list- that's a good thing!#And the point in looking at lists like this is to find out other people's opinions and recommendations#And you always know they're going to be biased#And the fact that it's male dominated isn't all that surprising especially for adult literature#However#What really got to me was this particular individual this utter HAM included children's literature#And that's where the gender bias not only became obvious; but it also became clear that this wasn't a list of classic books#This was just a list of the only books this guy had read#Female writers wrote a hefty portion of what we traditionally call children's classics#I know this because I actually read fiction as a child (adulthood less so)#And unlike this journalist I was diagnosed with Little Girl and therefore expected to read books by both men AND women#I'm not angry at this guy; he's obviously made the attempt to unlearn some of his assumptions#Especially with adult fiction#I'm more saddened by how obvious it is that boys of his generation were expected to only read books about boys; by men#And then we wonder why they grow up with a bias towards works by men as adults?#I just thought children's classics had to be an exception; even if they read stuff by men in other areas SURELY they'd read classics#like the Secret Garden or the Railway Children or Black Beauty especially in cases where the woman only used initials so you couldn't tell#It was a stupid fucking idea to put children's literature on the same list as adult classics anyway as children's lit is such a huge genre#But I'm sorry I read Robert Louis Stevenson (loved it) and Jack London and Mark Twain and Kenneth Grahame just like this guy#So I don't understand how he managed to miss out on everything except Little Women (which is sometimes marketed to adults which may explain)#It's not news of course that boys are often not expected to read books that aren't about boys we know this#What really got me is a) I would have thought the books often (rightly or wrongly) marketed as 'classics' would have been exempt from this#And b) now I know this dude didn't do his due diligence when creating this list because he clearly didn't think he needed to go back#and expand his knowledge of children's literature before throwing his list together based on what he personally read as a boy#Like personally if I was going to make the controversial decision to add children's lit to an already controversial list of classics#I for one know that I should go back and read the things I missed out on as a kid#For example my knowledge of children's classics is thoroughly determined by mid-twentieth century British views#Hence I read a lot of stuff from the Edwardian era#Hence I also didn't read many books by non-white writers- something which I now know to have been dictated by outside circumstances#So I would be very hesitant to just list off as 'the best children's books' all the ones I alone had read

This is a map of abandoned railroad lines in North America. The caption on the map notes that this data is incomplete. There are likely many more abandoned lines than just the ones shown here. (Source)
So do people realize that we aren't building new train tracks when we expand the amteak network, I have multiple times seen people say that we shouldn't expand the network because it would destroy protected lands, which would be a fair criticism but Amtrak doesn't build new tracks, we use existing tracks. We are not destroying protected lands, we are using land that has already been clear for a century
#if there's one thing you should know about me it's that i love a good map#i currently live a few blocks from an abandoned railway line and that's in a major city.#i grew up next to a train station where half of the tracks were never used

It has been done!! I wish I'd recorded the last turn ... it took every single coin I set up to finish ... thank you to Heathcliff for having 10 Coffin so his tails hit on Requiem dealt exactly enough damage to leave the boss at 1 HP, ensuring his second coin sniped the kill.
#I am really‚ truly done this time--I swear#this last run was so much fun though ... I really do have an understanding of how my IDs work now#this Railway I learned how to use Rupture + Sinking#and also got better at utilizing Absolute Resonance and setting up my Support Passives#LCB!Rodion has an INSANE Support Passive btw--she saved us#Into the Inferno 🚇#scattered pages

I found 2 Cool Rocks yesterday which looked sort of vaguely black and shiny and I thought might be flint but they were too dirt-covered to really identify but now I cleaned them up I'm thinking they may well be from the old railway that used to run across the bottom of the hill so that would make them Extra Cool Rocks if they actually had come from the railway.
#cleaned up they look like obsidian#but I think they must be slag glass or from railway clinker#(slag was used sometimes in railway ballast so either makes sense)

A lot of things advertised as better cities are all talk, just so a housing developer can make a buck. They won't apply principles like walkable city beyond what sells.
"Walkable city" is not "City where to have to walk everywhere."
"Walkable city" is.
Sidewalks big enough to fit you, your stroller, your wheelchair, your guide dog, or anything else you need when you're getting from one place to another.
Safe crosswalks frequent enough so you don't need to walk in traffic.
Bike lanes to keep bikes out of foot traffic and car traffic.
Accessible and affordable public transit.
Cities where the essentials are close enough you can travel on foot (or in wheelchair)
Cities where it's reasonable to be able to get from point a to point b without requiring you, yourself, to drive
People get so caught up in the "Walkable" part of the term and like to spout "Walkable cities are abelist because not everyone can walk".
Bitch. The modern city structure is abelist because not everyone can drive. And classist because not everyone can afford a car and it's pretty damn impossible to get a job if you don't have a car.
Walkable cities are cities where people can reasonably get from pointA to pointB without requiring a motor vehicle.
"But fae. Disabled people have issues using the paths in modern cities." Bitch abled people can barely use the paths in modern cities. That's kind of the fucking problem.
Also walkable cities have fucking benches. Not only for disabled people. But sometimes you just twist your ankle and need to sit for a moment.
"Put fae. If you have benches, homeless people will sleep on them."
Then get fucking housing for the homeless. Problem solved. They'll sleep in their nice warm homes instead of on the benches.
-fae
#a walkable city should still have cars. it just should be set up so as you don't have to use them#and this should be done by better designing pedestrian infrastructure and public transport not making the use of cars harder#another problem here at least is a lot of people think of trains and busses as how to get to work#leaving the infrastructure very city hub focused#and falling to develop other types of attractions along the railway. shops and apartments give the most investment value per area#so why put a school or a bowling alley or muscial hall whatever on land that could be earning more for the developer#this backward thinking prevents the development of walkable cities putting people back in cars for most other trips#and engraining car culture

Not too long ago I made a post about the Sanded Church of Skagen that was abandoned due to being buried in sand, but the “sand problem” is much larger than the church.
If you look at Denmark on a map you might notice a white dot near the very top of the country.
That my friend is a huge sand dune that arose out of the sea 300 years ago and is slowly eating its way through the landscape at 18 meters a year.
And if you look closer you might notice that it’s heading straight for the towns Rannerød and Hulsig and when that happens no one will come to save them because the dune is protected. At least they’ll see it coming.
That means that in a few hundred years we won’t just have a sanded church, we’ll have sanded towns with more roofs and towers sticking out of the dune than any tourist bureau could wish for.
Because the dune is a very popular tourist spot. I myself have been to it a few times and it’s quite the experience for a child to suddenly be in a “desert” in Denmark.
If you feel sad for the people in the towns just remember that’s nature. The reason why the dune is protected is because the area used to have many more but people made an effort to destroy them and it fucked up the ecosystem in the area. The dunes leave moist wetland behind that loads of rare creatures thrive in.
So today the inevitable end of the towns are viewed as sort of romantic poetry about nature, the march of time and appreciating the now.
And isn’t it kinda beautiful? To know that something like this exists in the world that will destroy our towns, roads and railways that we could easily eradicate with our modern technology but we choose not to simply because we know it would be wrong.

call me whiny but they really didn't need to make the travois that restrictive
#the bugs + restricted turn radius is enough you didn't also have to nerf us by restricting passage size + not letting us use it in caves#or indoors. my ass is trekking 220 lbs of stuff from broken railroad through the transfer pass to forsaken airfield and it's taking FOREVER#driving me NUTS bc I was hoping I could at least avoid dropping all my tiny berries and acorns n shit n having to pick them up to move and#drop them over and over again#why not let us use it in caves? why is the railway tunnel (filled with cars blocking sufficient travel size) allowed but caves with wide#passages aren't? insane mechanics#ALSO why can't I drop the travois? I can place it in things but heaven forbid I should want to drop it un-deployed to free up my inventory#I DO appreciate that they block you and give you a prompt telling u u can't move forward tho. helpful
