Apparently EU citizens can apply for British citizenship after getting settled status... but for some reason I doubt it would really be that easy... I bet they'll come up with some bullshit again and change the rules last moment... Also what use is there staying in a country that's in a horrific crisis after leaving the EU and the coronavirus pandemic...

The Long Good Friday (1980)
"Alan found him dying. He'd been nailed to the floor."
"When was this, then?"
"Well, it must've been just after you saw him and just before Alan saw him. Otherwise, you'd have noticed, wouldn't you? I mean, a geezer nailed to the floor. A man of your education would definitely have spotted that, wouldn't he?"
#the long good friday#british cinema#1980#john mackenzie#barrie keeffe#bob hoskins#helen mirren#derek thompson#eddie constantine#stephen davies#bryan marshall#p.h. moriarty#paul freeman#dave king#patti love#pierce brosnan#brian hall#paul barber#francis monkman#I'm late to this party but hell‚ this one deserves its reputation. an incendiary‚ even prophetic film; a perfectly timed capturing of that#moment everything in the uk shifted as Thatcher took power‚ capitalism became truly king‚ and with it came the dawn of the yuppie mindset#the legitimisation of the London underworld‚ gentrification and a new age of international aspirations: the US‚ Europe‚ and the New Britain#desperately shedding its dusty‚ working man's image to appear (like Hoskins here) to be civilised and refined and (crucially) a going#concern in economic turns. but underneath it all there's still the razors and the bigotry and corruption. all time Hoskins performance here#giving it everything and absolutely killing it (the final scenes among the best of his impressive career). but there's everyone else‚ too;#every single role seems tonbe a familiar face‚ right down to mute background roles. Keeffe's script is sharp and funny but it's also#unashamedly complex; the plot is labyrinthine‚ underneath the simple conceit‚ and never feels the need to spoonfeed what's happening and#why. topped off with a great moody synth score that's sparingly but effectively used. happy to say this one lives up to the hype#and Derek Thompson‚ as he so often was‚ is brilliant. between this and his tv work from the era (Harry's Game and The Price especially) he#really had the makings of a true star (but if he was happy in Casualty all those years‚ so be it)

I remember when I was younger people would ALWAYS make fun of me when I talked about my family because of what I called them. My family is Indian (punjabi to be exact) so I was subject to LOADS of mockery anyway. But when we did family trees in primary school I got laughed at so badly and so many people told me I had the 'wrong' names because my maternal uncle wasn't called 'mama', that was what my mother was called. When I tried to explain that that's what I called them in my culture I got told I was wrong. 8 year old me thought that my family tree was supposed to be filled with my family. What they were called to me. 8 year old me got told I was wrong. My teachers gave me sheets to fill out with 'uncle' and 'aunt' and 'grandma'. I grew up like that and when I was 10 years old we went to go and visit my mums family in Delhi. I called my mothers mum grandma. Now, when I visit I'm older, now I call my mother sister 'mausi', I call people who aren't related to me closely but are still very close 'mausi'. Because that's my culture. I am an only child but I have people I call 'didi', I have people who call me 'didi'. My older relatives call me 'beta'. I am not their daughter, but that is our culture. Now, I don't let anyone tell me what I can and can't call my family. Because they are mine. Now when people ask who's visiting, i tell them my 'chacha'.
I hate that I ever let anyone tell me my culture was wrong, that I had to leave my blood and roots behind in favour of what other people knew. But I was young and that was the reality of it. Everyday, my heart goes out to the little 8 year old girl sitting at the dining table, wishing she could change the colour of her skin and the blood in her veins.

British people arent human just saw a bunch violently arguing and kind of harassing a young american schoolteacher for using PEMDAS. which is. the acronym for it we use here. no apparently there its called BODMAS and when you imply that people in different countries use different words for things boy do they get angry!! tell you what get some astronauts. this wont let you weigh in on what children are taught in their country that isnt yours anymore because you couldnt handle a little tar and feathering but i think itd be better for your pr than this shit.

#fuck me sorry but that post actually unlocked so many memories for me rn and i simply must get them out lmao#anyways i just wish there was a way i could tell my geography teacher how much of an impact she made on my life#it absolutely shook my world view up when we did our lesson on migration and she asked me what the positives to immigration were#me. a brown girl living in britain her whole life where all she really saw and understood was an inherent hatred for immigrants.#and so i prattled off the textbook answer- they bring people who can do labour and earn more money for the country#and shes like 'and?' and i drew a blank. i couldnt think of anything else. what else were they worthy for?#and she explains. she says music. and food. and culture. and god. im tearing up just thinking about it. like in that single moment she just#fucking changed everything for me. like yeah. yeah ppl do bring that. they make this place everything it is. they bring Life to this place.#i feel like my words are so jumbled lmao idk how else to explain it i am simply soooooooooooooooooo emo like seriously#and it wasnt after i didnt have her as a teacher i was told my one of my friends that she always gives the best student in her class a#a yellow ring binder. the rest get green. guess what one i got. LIKE IM GOING TO CRY AND NEVER STOP. and i didnt know!! i never fucking knew#i literally remember her that day when she was like ah seems im all out @ H could you follow me pls and ill get you answer one from storage#and then she gave me a yellow ring binder like. fuck me man. fuuuuuuckkkkkkkkkkk#and i think back so much because she had a scottish sounding second name but she was married. and part of me thinks maybe her parents were#polish? just from context clues. but i dont actually know. and part of me is like am i just romanticising her? i didnt actually know who she#was. all i have is these little moments and how she treated me and the fact i liked her class#and people were so rude about her btw. like thought she was a dickhead. but she wasnt. she actually wasnt she just didnt take ppls shit. :((#and now im remembering that time i didnt do my homework and my friend took my jotter from the pile AS SHE WAS MARKING THEM and brought it#to me so i could copy off her#and ngl i always thought it was funny and sneaky but now im realising she probably fucking knew and didnt say anything because she liked us#god im gonna cry#i hope youre ok out there and i hope youre happy. i hope my idea of you is correct.#*insert spongebob laying on ground meme*#le text post

So this was at an Aldi’s
Awhile ago, a woman was asking for a quarter to get a cart. I searched my bag for a spare, turns out I have it, then I gave it to her.
It was no biggie.
So on a different Aldi’s trip more recently, Mom finds out about this, but she was mattering with the theme of “Whay the hell?? Why’d you do that?? Did you get a cart back?” And I’m like “??? Wtf does that even mean???” But Mom says that NO, I’m not SUPPOSED to help strangers get a cart when they can’t alone but I can. I’m allegedly SUPPOSED TO get something in return.
And I doubt that I’ll forget this anytime soon.
Cuz woooow, how DARE I be nice to people! /s

it drives me nuts how much suffering we force people to go through to meet some arbitrary idealized standard vs something that'd actually help. they're making my 60 yr old mom with fibro take pain management classes because they're too scared to put her on the prescription pain meds that she was already on before. i just read about someone with adhd talking about how the only med that works really well for them without making them depressed when it wears off or causing anxiety is desoxyn but doctors are too afraid to prescribe it to them because it's technically methamphetamine. the drug war is a complete burden on society

it always rubs me the wrong way that when people make fun of the british it is more often than not things that poor people and british people of colour do. like making fun of english breakfast for example i understand, it may not look appetising. but that's because it's a poverty struggle meal LMAO 😭 if you wanna make fun of the british then make fun of the racist xenophobic rich white english tories (because remember that great britain also contains countries that are colonised and to this day are negatively affected by the english, namely the entirety of wales)
"british" includes british poc too, and their status as a person of colour doesn't make them.. not british? so if you don't mean to offend marginalised groups then... don't say british people. say tories. say old white english men. say the royal family. please, have the sensibility and sympathy to acknowledge that the youth of britain are not responsible for colonisation or actions of their government and are in fact harmed by it as well.

I really do wonder how much the fact that all the Americans we meet outside the US had the money for a holiday many of us couldn't ever afford in reverse leads to misunderstandings in the 'americans getting touchy about their bad reputation' discourse
