Sao Tomé e Principe (Africa) Photo Workshop 31 October to 6 November 2025 Slideshow every evening during the stay. Photos of streets, tropical beaches with stranded boats, the capital's seaside on weekends when people come with their families for picnics, tuna fishing at sunset, evening markets in the capital, colonial architecture in the capital but also in the right in the middle of the jungle, baobab and cocoa fields, lunar landscapes, dense forests, contact with the inhabitants and cocoa and coffee plantations every day with a lot of architecture in both Urbex and colonial style ... everything this, far from the world, in an Africa still totally unknown. A real, unique and intense photographic adventure! Throughout the course, car rental (jeep Suzuki Jimny) to explore the jungle and colonial buildings (roças) dotted in nature and throughout the island. The photo course begins two days after arriving on the island, in order to get used to it, take a tour of the horizon and reserve cars etc ...  

Programme du Stage Photo 31 octobre - 6 novembre 2025 Diaporama tous les soirs pendant le séjour. Photos de rues, plages tropicales avec bateaux échoués, bord de mer de la capitale le week end lorsque les gens viennent en famille pour le pic-nic, pêche au thon, marchés le soir dans la capitale, architecture coloniale dans la capitale mais aussi au beau milieu de la jungle, champs de baobabs et de cacao, paysages lunaires, forêts denses, contacts avec les habitants et plantations de cacao et de café tous les jours avec beaucoup d'architecture aussi bien dans le style Urbex que coloniale... tout cela, loin du monde, dans une Afrique encore totalement méconnue. Une véritable, unique et intense aventure photographique ! Pendant toute la durée du stage, location de voiture (jeep Suzuki Jimny) afin d’explorer la jungle et les bâtiments coloniaux (roças) parsemés dans la nature et sur tout le territoire de l’ile. This Singer factory is still standing in Huambo...

The singer sewing machine is thought of as a uniquely western machine, but here’s a run-down and empty factory in Huambo, which was once known as Nova Lisboa during Portuguese colonial times.

It’s not clear when this building was manufacturing Swinger machines, but after a decades-long battle for independence that lasted from 1975 - to 2002, the entire countryside was destroyed.

Now, this building simply sits in the dust and falls apart, waiting to be rebuilt by human hands. The bones of this building are still good, but it’s likely that this building will never again be brought back to its original luster.

Part of this photography series will be published in a really interesting arts journal from South Africa, in a few days time................ Everything is Real presents a series of architectural #Rorschach tests inspired by the artist’s three year old daughter Zoë, who defiantly proclaims “everything is real!” whenever her fantasies are challenged. Despite alluding to something more fantastical – spaceships, monsters, objects from another world – everything about these photographs is actually real. The trace of a real place is preserved entirely intact in each image, the only creative intervention being the placement of a #mirror – another technology we routinely rely on to tell us the truth. The viewer is tricked by reflective #symmetry into seeing something which is not present, a psychological phenomenon known as #pareidolia – the same illusion relied on in Rorschach tests. Does what we see in these meaningless forms have something to tell us about ourselves? All photographs have this latent ability, here rendered obvious through the simplest of manipulations. In this series the artist revisits his own urban landscape photography, trying to see it afresh as if through the eyes of a child. “Reality” is a trick of perception and there are other ways of seeing it that we have forgotten. Photography should be about seeing through another set of eyes, perceiving banal and everyday things and spaces in new ways. As a manifesto this challenges the objectivity and authoritative “truth claim” of photography, something which has been shown as both false and politically problematic by key theorists such as John Tagg.
