Industry trend|Apple plans to enter the consumer IPC market with a goal of an annual shipment volume of 10 million units
According to the latest news released by Tianfeng International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo on November 12, Apple plans to launch its smart home webcam product for the first time in 2026. Apple plans to set the annual shipment volume of this webcam to tens of millions units, aiming to provide users with an excellent user experience through seamless connection with the company's existing hardware ecosystem.
There are several speculations about Apple's consumer IPC:
1. Apple is under pressure on the existing hardware headed by mobile phones, and needs to find more growth points. According to the data of Visual IoT's "2024 Visual IOT Consumer Market Analysis Report": In 2023, the global consumer IPC market size will be 55 billion yuan, with shipments of 150 million units and a growth rate of 15.4%. Consumer IPC is a rigid demand market with good volume and increment, and IPC and mobile phones complement each other and can also drive reverse consumption of mobile phones.
2. Whether it is Xiaomi, Huawei or Samsung in China, they are all building their own ecosystem of the Internet of Everything. Once the ecosystem reaches a certain order of magnitude, it can affect the mobile phone market on which Apple depends for survival, so Apple also needs to build more hardware ecosystems of its own.
3. Using consumer IPC as the entrance to layout the smart home market, the market has been speculating that Apple is developing a smart home display for some time. This product is expected to be launched as early as early next year. The product will be equipped with a relatively small screen, which is about the size of two iPhone screens and is approximately square in shape. This product may be relatively cheap, so that it can be more easily popularized to each family, which makes Apple's upcoming homeOS operating system easy to use. IPC can achieve more linkage with smart home screens and mobile phones.
4. In order to find more application scenarios for Apple Intelligence, Apple has already declared all in AI. In addition to AI mobile phones, it needs to seek more carriers to reflect the capabilities of Apple AI, and IPC is a good choice. Vision has always been the most important landing application direction of AI. Vision can not only realize object or event recognition, but also can be an important way of human-computer interaction. Through IPC, more interactions between people and smart devices can be achieved, reflecting the value of AI.
However, for Apple to enter the IPC market, the pressure is not light. There are many domestic and foreign competitors. Each brand has its own market characteristics and advantages. To achieve the goal of annual shipments of tens of millions of units, it is not enough to rely on the Apple brand alone. It is also necessary to have better innovation in the capabilities of the IPC product, especially in the IPC AI capabilities, so it depends on Apple Intelligence.

Qualcomm Promises Big Upgrades with its New Flagship Snapdragon Chip
A new year, a new Snapdragon chip - actually, Qualcomm makes a good amount of different chipsets for different applications and devices throughout the entire year, although there's a different level of excitement and anticipation when it comes to its flagship-grade SoCs. As such, the company finally unveiled its latest Snapdragon 8 Elite chip during the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii, promising a lot of new enhancements for upcoming Android devices. You've probably noticed that it's not referred to as the "8 Gen 4" as a lot of early reports did. With the Snapdragon 8 Elite Qualcomm is also revamping its naming scheme, most probably to establish a more uniform approach with the rest of its products (such as the Snapdragon X Elite chips). With all that said, let's take a look at what it packs inside. Main Highlights Let's take a look at what Qualcomm is promising with the new chip - the Snapdragon 8 Elite is the first mobile chip from the company that comes with Qualcomm's Oryon CPU (moving away from its old Kryo hardware), and it's designed with on-device genAI software in mind, as the industry moves even faster towards an AI-based approach to mobile computing. Speaking of the Oryon CPU in particular, Qualcomm has designed its with prime cores running at 4.32Ghz, which work alongside a number of performance cores which are clocked at 3.53Ghz. Qualcomm's boasting a pretty significant performance leap with the 8 Elite, with as much as 45% improvement for single-core performance, at least when compared to the 8 Gen 3 from last year. Another improvement is with regards to power management, with up to 45% better efficiency this time around. CHECK OUT: Meet MediaTek’s Newest Flagship Smartphone Chip, the Dimensity 9400 Gaming and Performance Of course at this point in time we're still waiting to see how phones running on the Snapdragon 8 Elite will perform in real-world usage, but Qualcomm's early benchmarks at least give us an idea of what to expect with the new SoC. The company says that (based on Geekbench testing), the Snapdragon 8 Elite managed a score of 3,221 for single-core performance and 10,426 for multi-core testing, both of which out-perform the 8 Gen 3's 2,193 and 7,304 scores respectively. There's little doubt that the 8 Elite's performance upgrades will also appeal to users looking for a capable chip for their gaming needs. Overall performance upgrades amount to a 40% increase this time around, and the chip does come with Qualcomm's usual array of gaming features such as ray tracing capabilities, and supports game engines such as Unreal Engine Nanite, and the Unreal Engine Chaos Physics Engine. AI Smarts and Photography The Snapdragon 8 Elite likewise comes with Qualcomm's AI Engine which features multimodal Gen AI which works by understanding voice, text, images, and even visual input from a user's device components such as the camera. Qualcomm's new Hexagon NPU also packs up to 45% faster performance for AI tasks, and the chip's AI capabilities let it work with Qualcomm's Sensing Hub - this is a means for the hardware to understand personal context, allowing the multimodal generative AI assistant within to offer tailored suggestions and decisions, for example. The chip's AI capabilities extends to camera performance. In addition to existing optimizations for camera hardware, the 8 Elite's NPU will be able to work with raw sensor data in photos, in addition to other AI-based video and photo features such as video relighting, an object eraser tool for videos, all without needing to save files to the cloud. We can expect to see the Snapdragon 8 Elite arrive in phones from several manufacturers including ASUS, Honor, iQOO, OnePlus, OPPO, RealMe, Samsung, Vivo, Xiaomi, and more within the coming weeks and months. Leaked images of flagship Xiaomi phone showcase fully buttonless design
Buttonless phones aren't a new concept. HTC has also already explored the design, and the U12 Plus is the last-released phone with such a design from the company. Some modern phones, like the Asus ROG Phone 8 and RedMagic 9S Pro (12/256 GB curr. $749 on Amazon), feature the same pressure-sensitive sensors but still have physical buttons.
The pressure-sensitive buttons on those phones act like shoulder triggers, and they are paired with vibration motors to offer haptic feedback. A recent report from @chunvn8888 suggested that Xiaomi is working to release a flagship phone with no physical buttons, and now, a prototype with the "Wangshu" codename has appeared in live leaked images.
Per the images shared, the prototype is for a phone under the MIX line, which makes sense because Xiaomi usually experiments stuff with this lineup of smartphones. But what's rather interesting is that the images show that there aren't any pressure-sensitive sensors, which manufacturers usually use to replace physical buttons.
However, this isn't the rumored flagship phone Xiaomi is rumored to be working on. As the last report from @chunvn8888 claimed, this upcoming phone would be codenamed "zhuque." Another thing to note is that the description shared with leaked live images of the prototype says it is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
That is a last-gen SoC, and next month, it will be a two-generation old processor. The "zhuque," on the other hand, is expected to be a proper flagship, with the latest hardware. However, it's possible that the design of the rumored buttonless Xiaomi phone might be based on this prototype.

IDC: GenAI smartphones to drive global shipment growth in 2024
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/idc-genai-smartphones-to-drive-global-shipment-growth-in-2024/
IDC: GenAI smartphones to drive global shipment growth in 2024
.pp-multiple-authors-boxes-wrapper display:none; img width:100%;
IDC has revised its global smartphone shipments forecast 2024, projecting a 5.8% year-on-year (YoY) growth to 1.23 billion units. The market intelligence firm’s optimistic outlook is driven by strong growth in affordable Android devices across emerging markets and substantial interest in generative AI-capable smartphones in premium segments.
IDC’s senior research director, Nabila Popal, noted that Android devices are expected to see growth rates nine times faster than iOS at 7.1% compared to 0.8%. This disparity is attributed to increasing competition for Apple in China and a higher comparison base year for the iPhone maker.
However, the forecast suggests potential upside for iOS, depending on the reception of GenAI features in the upcoming iPhone 16 and Apple’s ability to establish local AI partnerships in China. IDC anticipates an improved trajectory for iOS in 2025, with 4% YoY growth expected due to the anticipated momentum of Apple Intelligence.
The report highlights the rapid adoption of GenAI smartphones, forecasting a 344% growth in this segment to capture 18% of the total market by the end of 2024. IDC research director Anthony Scarsella pointed out that most flagship models will likely incorporate some on-device GenAI features.
“Although GenAI smartphones are relatively new in the market, premium flagships will continue to adopt GenAI features to help separate them from the pack,” said Anthony Scarsella, research director for IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. Notably, the average selling price for GenAI-capable smartphones is expected to be more than double that of non-GenAI devices, further driving the premiumisation trend in the industry.
The smartphone market’s recovery comes after a challenging period. IDC’s data shows 12% growth in the first quarter of 2024, followed by 9% growth in the second quarter. This positive trend has bolstered confidence in the industry’s performance for the latter half of the year.
Even the latest Canalys research revealed that the worldwide smartphone market grew strongly in the second quarter of 2024, with shipments reaching 288.9 million units. “The market has grown for three consecutive quarters, driven by product innovation initiatives and improvements in business conditions,” Canalys stated.
Mirroring IDC’s data, Canalys noted that despite a modest 1% shipment increase, Samsung held onto pole position with 53.5 million units shipped. Meanwhile, Apple held second place with 45.6 million units, bolstered by solid momentum in North America and APAC’s emerging markets.
China’s Xiaomi, with its competitive product offerings, followed closely with shipments of 42.3 million units to achieve a market share of 15%. “Greater China’s growth trajectory now mirrors global markets, driven by improved macroeconomic conditions and renewed business confidence among channel and smartphone brands,” the report stated.
Like elsewhere, the Chinese domestic market will see local Chinese brands use GenAI features to stand out in the premium segment, aiming to capture rising high-end spending and apply successful strategies worldwide.
“Samsung will inevitably focus on integrating its Galaxy ecosystem to create strong value propositions for consumers via its flagship offerings with exclusive GenAI features,” Canalys Senior Analyst Sanyam Chaurasia said. Apple will look to accelerate replacement demand in these markets via its AI strategy, with hybrid models, enhanced privacy and personalised Siri features.”
Even Canalys doesn’t foresee the smartphone market seeing double-digit growth in 2024 despite the seasonal demand in the year’s second half. Overall, the global technology market analyst firm anticipates the smartphone market to grow in the mid-single digits in 2024, driven by recovering inventory levels, eased import restrictions, and a better economic climate.
