"I hate it when you lie"

10 Things I Hate About You ← mini-series masterlist
"I hate the way you're always right," ← previous part
₊˚⊹♡₊˚⊹♡₊˚⊹♡₊˚⊹♡₊˚⊹♡₊˚⊹♡₊˚⊹♡₊˚⊹♡₊˚⊹♡₊˚⊹♡₊˚⊹♡₊˚⊹♡ ₊˚⊹
Miguel had been working later nights than usual. When you asked him about it he said that the recruits had him busy with getting them assimilated in the Spider Society.
You were missing him during the day and were surprisingly on your writing schedule. So you decided to pay him a visit and give him the opportunity to see his beautiful wife.
After saying hi to everyone and giving the book club a teaser of your upcoming book. You finally went to Miguel's office after hearing he was back from a mission you never would have thought you would see Justine with him there playing nurse.
When Miguel saw you walk in he immediately sat up and his face lightened up. "Hi baby," he sighed as he gestured for Justine to stop working on the cut across his chest.
"Hi," you replied, giving him a strained smile.
"Justine, I can take it from here if you want to get something to eat," you said.
"Ugh, whatever," she hissed, stomping away and rolling her eyes.
"Thank you for being nice, I'm sorry about her behavior," he said as he pulled you closer to him, grabbing you by your waist.
"Yeah," you breathed out as you picked up some gauze for his cut.
"What's wrong mami?" Miguel asked, his hands sliding down to your hips.
"I just miss you, I hate to see you get hurt all the time. I worry about you," you admitted.
"Ay cariño, take a seat please, talk to me," he cooed as he pulled the chair that Justine had been sitting in previously. He took both of your hands in his and patiently waited for you to speak.
"Miguel, I've just been missing you, I promise that's all," you assured.
"Okay, promise me nothing else is wrong?" he asked.
"Promise," you said as he kissed your forehead.
"How about you get home and I'll get done with work here and we can watch a movie together," he suggested.
"That sounds great," you replied, trying not to smile too hard. You were so happy that he would be coming home earlier.
. . .
It had been 3 hours and 4 text messages since you got home from Spider Society and Miguel still wasn't home. You had popcorn setup that was now cold and stale and drinks that were finished off by you when you realized 5 minutes into midnight that he wasn't coming home on time.
He would probably creep in at 2 am and apologize in the morning like he did after every missed date. You could blame him; he was probably in another universe saving the world. But he never really had an issue with you calling him on missions they were usually pretty easy for him.
So you called him and he picked up after a while of letting it ring. "Hi cariño, I'm so sorry I wasn't keeping track of time," he apologized. Small sniffles and giggles could be heard faintly on the other end of the line.
"That's okay, are you working on something?" you asked as you put snacks away with him on the speaker.
"Yeah, it randomly got kind of busy," he replied. Another sniffle could be heard.
"Hey this might sound weird but are you with someone right now?" you asked. Long silence on his end.
"No," he replied. Long silence on your end.
"Okay, I'm tired, I'm going to bed," you said. You hung up a bit too fast, cutting him off.
. . .
Why would he lie if he wasn't doing something wrong? You asked yourself as you got in your sheets and scrolled on your phone before bed. You got a notification from Hobie. He sent you a story on Instagram. Justine's story. Justine's story of her playing video games in Miguel's office, with his arm in the corner of the photo.
. . .
next part → "I hate it when you make me laugh,"

Chapter 1
“Good morning, BAU!” I said as I walked through the doors of the elevator and entered the bullpen. I could still remember how it felt the first time I got here.
I walked out of the elevator and made my way to the first office on the left. I was to meet
SSA Aaron Hotchner for an interview to join the BAU. My hands were shaking, and my body was getting warmer by the second. But I remembered my father’s encouraging words. “You’re gonna do great, mia bella.”
Not only was I extremely young, but I also had a lot to live up to. Being the daughter of SSA David Stephen Rossi was no easy task. He was an amazing agent, mentor, and father. He always pushed me to be the best at everything I did. When I started high school, I decided to get a head start on my college studies and applied to dual enrollment. When I graduated I did so with a Bachelor’s in Computer Science. Then, I worked my way to a Master’s in Psychology and Social Work, and a Doctorate in Criminal Justice. At the same time, my father trained me as a profiler. All my life I knew I wanted to be in the FBI, just like him. I was always impressed at all he did and wanted to be just like my hero. The day I told him I had been recruited by the FBI and was set to work in the BAU he said it had been the greatest day of his life.
Now my shaking hand raised to softly knock on the door before me.
“Come in,” someone said from inside. The door softly creaked as I opened and was met by a tall man with dark hair and a shorter blonde woman. “Agent Rossi, welcome.”
“Thank you, it’s an honor to be here.” I smiled and shook Aaron Hotchner’s and Erin Strauss’ hands.
“It’s an honor to meet you, Agent Rossi,” Erin smiled. “Have to say, you have a very impressive curriculum and your disinvolvement in our past interviews and tests have been outstanding.”
I smiled and turned the bracelet on my wrist for comfort.
“I must concur with Chief Strauss,” said Hotch. “I believe you will be a great addition to the BAU team.”
After sharing a few pleasantries and being handed my badge and gun, I was following Hotch to the briefing room to meet the rest of the team. Formally, at least. I had heard everything about them when I spoke with my father. He left no detail out.
“Morning, everyone,” Hotchner started. “I called you all in early today so you could meet the newest addition to the team. This is Agent (y/n) Rossi.”
To the sound of my name most of the mouths in the room dropped.
“Rossi, as in David Rossi?” The slender, messy haired agent said. I could only assume that was Spencer Reid. As my father had described him, a curly mess dressed in vests.
I nodded.
“Rossi, you didn’t tell us you had such a beautiful daughter.” That would be Derek Morgan. The hottie Casanova with a silver tongue.
“I hadn’t?” My father questioned and smirked, knowing full well the answer.
“Well, he’s talked a lot about all of you,” I smiled.
“All good things I hope,” Emily smiled.
“Great things,” I returned the smile. “I could probably make out who is who by the things he’s told me.”
“Go ahead,” Aaron challenged.
“Alright,” I cleared my throat and started going around the table. “Curly hair, vests, analyzing everything I’ve done and said since I walked in… you’re Spencer Reid.”
He smiled brightly.
“Tall, dark, handsome, and a silver tongue. Plus, you checked me out as soon as the doors of the elevator opened… Derek Morgan.”
He smirked.
“Calm, cool, and collected. Quiet but present, inspecting my presence here… you’re Emily Prentiss.”
“She’s good,” Emily muttered to Morgan beside her. I continued.
“And last but not least, bright colors, fun accessories,” I said looking at Garcia. “Even though you’re smiling, you’re not sure about me yet because you don’t like change and are probably going to dig up everything you can on me as soon as you can… Penelope Garcia.”
She stiffened and Derek chuckled.
“Don’t worry, I get it. I do not like change that much either. And here,” I reached my hand into my bag to pull out a rather thick folder. “I’ll save you the work. Background check, complete internet history, social medias, and all the whatnots you would need to build a very extensive profile.”
“Oh, thank you,” she reached out her hand and grabbed the folder, smiling at the floor.
“And well, I already know Agent Hotchner and my father, so they don’t need much of an introduction.”
“No, but you do,” my father said joining my side. “Tell them a bit about yourself.”
“Well, I have a bachelor, two masters, and a doctorate degree: I’m 23, I’m Rossi’s daughter…” In the middle of my thought process dad cut in.
“She’s beautiful, she’s intelligent, and she’s the one I call when I’m stuck on a case.” I smiled.
“She also passed every test with flying colors,” Aaron added. “And her profiling skills are exceptional.”
“Thank you,” I blushed. “I think it runs in my blood.”
“Well, welcome to the team,” Aaron continued. “Let’s get to work.”
That was almost three years ago. A couple of days after, I met JJ who had visited with her newborn son Henry.
In very little time I had grown attached to this family. I was most of the time partnered with Spence and we developed an amazing bond. It did help that I loved playing chess and we could have highly erudite talks. Also, I very much enjoyed his over sharing of facts. But really, I was close to them all. On my spare time I was found watching movies with Derek and Penny, perusing book shops with Reid, having girl nights with JJ, Penny, and Emily, or sipping on top grade scotch while finishing paperwork with Hotch.
Spending time with Hotch was my favorite pastime of all.
I realized I had developed feelings for him the day he was captured by Foyet and left at the hospital. Receiving the call from Emily that she had found blood at his apartment literally knocked the air out of my lungs. Reid could tell that my reaction would not have been the same where it had been any of the other members. For some time, he had deduced my attraction to our unit chief. Once we had captured Patrick Meyers and Reid had been sent off to a hospital, we sped off to St. Sebastian Hospital. I could feel my heartbeat going faster and faster as I felt time slipping by. More than once I had asked Morgan to go faster and with sorry eyes, he told me he was going as fast as he could.
Seeing Hotch on a hospital bed, greatly hurt, broke me. I knew everyone on the team, just like Reid, had figured it out. I was the first one in when the doctor announced he was waking up. His eyes fluttered open as JJ, the last one to enter, made it in.
“Where am I?” He groggily asked.
“In the hospital,” dad answered.
My eyes could not leave his face, even as all I wanted was to imagine him in a different state. Derek told him how he made it to the hospital and Emily asked Hotch what had happened. Closing his eyes, Hotch explained step by step how everything had gone down. Upon more investigation, we quickly figured what Foyet had taken and, a page from his planner that held his ex-wife’s and son’s current address and a picture of them, respectively.
Once we had that information, the team knew exactly what to do. Emily and I volunteered to stay behind and update the team if anything changed. As soon as he went to sleep, we let out a locked breath. But the relief was short lived as his pulse started to get exceedingly fast.
“What happened?” The doctor asked.
“I don’t know,” I croakily muttered out. Emily put a hand on my back as I softly touched his arm.
“Agent Hotchner. Can you hear me?” The doctor called out. “Agent Hotchner?”
He finally opened his eyes and responded. “I’m okay.”
The doctor asked us out of the room as she checked on him and Emily helped stabilize my walk as we made it out. I saw the doctor and a nurse check him as I picked the skin of the thumb of my right hand. Emily noticed and grabbed it, knowing well of my nervous ticks. The other being closing my fist hard enough to dig my nails in it.
“He’ll be okay,” she smiled. “You know he’s a fighter.”
I softly smiled at her, not knowing if she said it for me or for her to believe it too.
Once we knew Haley and Jack were safe the three of us let out a relieved sigh. Hotch squeezed the hand I had been holding as he slept, needing the reassurance of a trusted presence next to him. He asked Emily about the scene at his apartment, but she could not give him definite answers. In a moment of silence, she excused herself to go buy coffee and I took this chance to ask him what had been going through my head.
“Do you wanna talk about what happened?” I asked worry evident in my eyes.
Sighing, he responded. “I don’t know. After he stabbed me the first time, it all goes blank.”
He looked straight into my eyes and I could tell he knew more than he let on, but now was not the time to push him. He had been drained: physically, emotionally, and mentally. In that moment, Haley walked in and I let go of his hand to leave them to talk. From outside of the room, I could hear the heartbreaking moment and knowing he was in pain shattered my heart. That day had absolutely devastated us as a team, but it only made us more determined to find Foyet and end him.
But life and work went on. The whole month he was off, I spent most of my free time helping in his recovery and his healing, using the little training I had in wound treatment. The other part of my time I spent with Reid, who was also in recovery. A far less pressing injury, but an injury, nonetheless. And he was my best friend, so I could not completely abandon him.
We were all worried about him coming back to the team with Foyet still out there, but dad reassured us he would only be more motivated. Yet the first case back, he was different. He was usually professional and understanding, now it seemed that no matter how well we worked, we would make a mistake. And when we finally tracked down the unsub and he made his way inside the house, no vest, and no gun, I knew there was something different in him. I tried to follow him inside, but dad stopped me.
“We have to trust him,” he told me. Even with those words we were all unsure of the outcome. My head was working 1,000 miles a minute coming up with different ways this could all end up in, and when I heard the gunshots, my mind only went to the darkest end. Quickly we stormed in the house and saw Hotch putting handcuffs on Darrin, and a very dead Jarvis on a recliner.
My father spent most of his time with me reassuring me that Hotch was still the same man he had been a month before. And I spent most of my time with Hotch reassuring him that he was not alone.
At the end of most cases Emily, dad, and I sat with Hotch in his office to drink a cup of scotch and unwind after a stressful day. I stayed nights overtime often and was there on the night that Strauss had landed a surprise visit to his office. The next day he became hyper focused on Derek’s work, which later he revealed to me the reason why. The bureau was questioning his leadership and he meant to step down as unit chief at the end of that week. This ended with Derek becoming active unit chief whilst Hotch was being investigated.
The days that followed were quite strange. We were used to taking orders from Hotch and now taking orders from Morgan was completely different. But business went on as usual. We worked on cases just as hard and solved them just as efficiently. With one case always hanging on us like a dark cloud. George Foyet. With every case we finished we knew he was still out there, which meant that Hotch was still hurting and hunting.
But the dreaded day had caught up to us. With the last case we had been on in Hampton we knew Foyet had found Hotch. He was taunting Hotch, dangling his life in front of him. Once he had sent us that calling card, we pressed harder on our investigation, pulling at whatever string we could find.
Thankfully, JJ pulled our medication string harder when she found out about the ability to substitute prescriptions with over-the-counter meds. We worked tirelessly and strongly to shorten the investigation part of this case. We needed to catch him, fast.
“Wait a minute, guys. Foyet likes things that have meaning to him,” I said looking at the map presented in front of us. I could see that Reid knew where I was going.
“The eye of providence, the addresses in blood he wrote on the bus that led back to him,” Spence added, and I nodded.
“Maybe he’s doing the same with his name,” I said as Reid wrote down George Foyet on the board.
“Like an anagram or something,” Emily chimed. Quickly, Reid got to work on the theory crossing out and circling letters. Adding ‘The Reaper’ onto the board and utilizing it, once Hotch had pointed out Foyet gave himself that name. He kept up this process until the name Peter Rhea came to existence.
Garcia tracked down the name and quickly found an address in Arlington. We had found him, but it was just too easy.
We were waiting outside of the apartment building for too long, waiting for something, anything. Once Morgan had given his orders, the plan was set in motion. Still, something in the back of my mind kept telling me it was too easy. We stormed the empty apartment and searched for anything that would help us find his actual location. His computer was quickly deleting files, but Garcia was better. Haley’s protection unit was in trouble.
As soon as it clicked, we were on our way to the stash house. Inside the house Marshal Sam Kassmeyer was hurt, losing blood quickly. With the little he was able to tell us we knew that Haley and Jack were in danger. Sam had not told Foyet anything, but George was smart, unfortunately. He had disguised himself as a Marshal and lied to Haley to get her where he needed her. Only him had communication with her. Everyone was on edge wanting nothing more than to find this man.
In the office we heard Hotch’s conversation with Foyet. He was working hard to buy some time for us to find him but knowing George he already had a plan set in motion. He had eyes on the pair, he was with them. I could only imagine what Hotch was going through.
“Alright, Foyet has to be in control,” Derek said, breaking me out of my thoughts. “He had Haley come to him.”
“Yeah, but where would he take her?” Spencer asked. We all started thinking and speculating. There was something in the call that told Hotch where to go. That was the key.
“Reid, what did he say, exactly?” I emphasized on the last word.
“Haley’s hair looks good dark. She’s lost some weight. It must be because of all the stress you caused her. Where’s the little man? Oh, there he is now. Do you think he likes Captain America because of you? That’s your wife on the other line. Hold, please. Hi. Open the gate and I’ll drive in.” Spencer recited in a monotone voice.
“Open the gate?” My father questioned.
“It would be someplace with the biggest emotional impact for Hotch,” I said looking down to organize my thoughts.
“And Haley has access to the gate,” Derek added, and it clicked.
“Their house,” I said. “Where they lived together.”
“Of course,” Emily said. “Foyet planned this all the way to the end. It’s everything to him.”
“He wants to take over Hotch’s house, to be in control, to prove his dominance,” I finished. We knew where he was going, and I was sure Hotch knew too and was already on his way.
On the way, Hotch got a call from Foyet’s phone. It was Hayley. I heard the emotion grabbing him by the throat. We could hear the whole conversation and my heart broke when he asked Hayley the magic words.
“Tell Jack that I need him working on the case,” Hotch breathed out. One drunken night he had told me about how he had found Jack inside a storage bench in his office after he had knocked on it. The smiling kid had told his father that he was working the case with Hotch. Hotch knew what was going to happen and so did I. This was the best chance Jack had at survival.
When Hotch told Jack to hug his mom and he said I love you, I let out a loud sob and Emily grabbed my hand tightly for support. But I was not the one that need the care. Hotch did. Haley’s words would forever be engraved in my head, and in the heads of our friends.
Three gunshots rang through the line right before it cut. Then I could not hold back the tears. I knew. I just knew.
Hotch was the first one on the scene and all I thought of was that he did not have a vest or any backup, so god knows what could have happened. For the second time in a matter of months all I could ask for was that Morgan drove faster.
At the house, Morgan was the first one in and the scene that unfolded in front of us was heartbreaking. Hotch was hitting Foyet over and over, and Derek had to hold him back. He was dead. I surveyed the scene and instinctively went to Hotch’s office, Hotch following close behind. Jack had to be there. I let Hotch walk past me and watched as relief overtook him when he lifted the lid.
“I work the case, daddy,” Jack said. Unbeknownst to everything that had happened. “Just like you said.”
“You did a great job buddy,” Hotch lifted his son out of the bench.
“What happened to you, daddy?”
“I’m okay. I want you to go outside with Ms. Jareau. Ok?” The child walked to JJ and she took him out in her arms.
And Hotch let go. He silently cried and I helped him make his way to where Haley laid. I stood by the door and turned away a police officer. Morgan stood up and squeezed my shoulder as he left the room behind the officer. I stayed outside of the doorframe, listening to the sobs of a strong man.

Hashirama’s Plan
Chapter 4 of Fire Station 9
Pairing: Tobirama x Sakura
Rating G
Summary: Sakura tells Tobirama of her plan to raise enough money to beat KPD.
Also posted on AO3 (for chapters 1-3)
The men were bustling about the station getting ready for the day. Tobirama sat in his office drinking his cup of coffee. He could tell it was going to be a long day. The florist was coming over to discuss the ball and ideas for events. Some of the men were giddy with excitement to have a woman in the station.
Tobirama remembers when he talked to some of the guys about her idea. All of them jumped at the opportunity to help with the decorations and set up. His younger brother Itami was also on board to help with creating the pillars. Apparently Sakura and Itami knew each other from high school. Tobirma’s eye started to twitch.
With one last swig of his coffee he left his office. He needed more coffee, which meant venturing to the kitchen to get it. As he walked through the hallways he could hear the voices get louder in the dining area. Brief snippets of the conversation flooded through his ears. Konohamaru was giddy with excitement. The new recruit was Asuma’s nephew, but didn’t seem to take after the older man’s laid back nature.
“Hey boss when is Sakura going to get here? I haven’t seen her ages.” Tobirama was debating spiking the boys coffee with cough syrup. Hmm while he was at it he should also spike his brother’s coffee as well.
“Will you calm down. How will you ever be able to keep calm in a fire or emergency situation if you are as excitable as a puppy?” Konohamaru's face fell flat.
“Sorry it's just Sakura is friends with Naruto and I grew up with them. I haven’t seen her since she started her own business. Ami always looked up to her. Sakura was her inspiration for going to nursing school.” Tobirama lifted an eyebrow at that.
“How did a florist inspire someone to go into nursing school?” Before Konohamaru could respond they heard a soft voice break through all the noise.
“Oh there you are. I wasn’t sure where you wanted to meet so I hope you don’t mind that I just let myself in.” Konohamaru ran to Sakura to pick her up.
“Sakura-chan! I haven’t seen you in ages.” Sakura laughed at Konohamaru and gave him a hug back. Tobirama was surrounded by children. Where the hell was the coffee.
“Konohamaru how are you? Is Ami doing ok? Have you asked her out yet.” Konohamaru started to stammer.
“Sakura, she is just a friend.” He could hear the pout on Konohamaru’s face even with his back turned.
“Of course. It’s really Hanabi you like.” Before he had to tell them to break up their bonding moment, Sakura stopped it.
“We should catch up some time. Come by the flower or coffee shop when you are free. I have things to discuss with your Chief.” As Tobirama took a sip from the elixir of life he noticed how all the guys were staring at her. He then took in her appearance, he understood why. She was wearing a pair of exercise pants that were fifty percent mesh and a sleeveless racerback exercise top. He could see the definitions of her arm and back muscles. Her hair was braided down her back. She didn’t look like she was trying to attract attention, but the auror around her pulled people in. Yeah they would have no problem finding help.
“Tobirama-san is there somewhere you would like to go over the plans some more. I have come up with some ideas I would like to run by you.” With a heavy sigh he started to lead her to his office. However, he was interrupted by one of the crew members offering her a cup of coffee. It was Deidera. He had been with them for a little over a year, he was the arsonist expert. He didn’t know why irritation overcame him. He narrowed it down to having to wait longer to go over the plans. Tobirama also thought of how Deidara should be investigating one of the recent factory fires.
Tobirama was intrigued when he saw her take her coffee black. He would have expected a ton of sugar and cream. Instead she took a small sip and then nodded her head. When he saw her smile the irritation faded some.
“Do you want to join me to discuss this or not.” Yep he was still irritated. The crew started to scatter. Sakura just rolled her eyes at him.
“Jeez someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.” The men all froze when she spoke waiting for him to go off on her. Instead she walked ahead of him and he followed.
Sakura looked around his office, it was psycho killer level organized. There were no papers on his desk. He had desk organizers with neatly stacked papers, on the counter behind him. A couple of awards and certificates decorated his walls. His office was like him, no nonsense.
“Alright Sakura-san lets get this over with.” Sakura watched him sit elegantly in his chair, while she just plopped in the guest chair. He just looked at her and didn’t bother to continue the conversation. Sakura knew he wanted her to start talking.
“First I wanted to see if you have asked the men if they would help with decorations and set up?” Sakura was hoping he was at least able to carry enough conversational skills to ask a simple question with people he worked with everyday.
“They all were in agreement to lending a hand.”
“That’s great! It will help us save a lot of money. On the topic of money I have been thinking of different events that can take place during the ball. One of them is to have an auction.” Sakura paused waiting for him to say something. He tilted his head and was silent for a few seconds.
“An auction. Doesn’t that mean we have to get products for the attendees to bid on?” Yep here comes the pessimistic attitude.
“Well I was thinking about that. Did your school ever have student auctions senior year?” Sakura was praying that he would say yes.
“No.” Tobirama wanted her to get to the point.
“Oh. Ok. So in high school the student council would set up an event every year. Students from the senior class would be put up for auction. The other grades would then bid on them. The seniors would create a list of what they would do for the day for the person who placed the highest bid on them. It didn’t cost any money for the auction itself and always brought in a good amount of money for Grad Week activities. So I was thinking that we could do something similar with the firefighters.” Sakura looked at him hopefully. The man had a great poker face.
“You want to auction off the firefighters to raise money?” His voice was tight when he spoke. Tobirama didn’t like how this sounded. But he liked the idea of no money going into the event.
“Yes. Each firefighter would create a bio to have posted before the event. The attendants can access it on your website. I was also thinking of having two of my friends help with creating photos for the website as well.” Sakura wanted to scream at him to just accept the idea.
This idea left a bitter taste in his mouth, but he wouldn’t have to participate in it.
“And what would my crew be doing for those who win?” Sakura was anticipating this question. She knew Tobirama’s distaste for the firefighter calendars that some of the other stations would create, so knew this would not be his cup of tea.
“They would have a day with the firefighter. It will be in the rules that everything is to remain respectful for all parties involved.” Tobirama folded his arms and leaned back.
“Will your friends charge for the photos?” Sakura found hope bubbling up on the inside.
“No they will be doing it as a favor.” Sakura just had to treat Sai and Ino to a dinner of their choice.
“Fine.” Sakura found herself jumping up in excitement. She looked over to Tobirama who looked like he was going to explode.
“Sorry. I got a little excited.” Sakura sat back down in her chair. She pulled out some files from her bag and tried to appear like the professional business woman she was.
“We could also auction off some days for people to spend time in the firestation.” Tobirama didn’t know where the idea came from or what possessed him to say it out loud.
“That sounds wonderful!” Sakura clasped her hands in front of her in excitement. Maybe this would be so bad. They settled into a more detailed conversation about the logistics of the ball. It seemed like only moments had passed, but when he glanced at his watch they had been in his office for over 2 hours.
As she went to open her mouth Tobirama’s office door was flung open, causing her to jump. She didn’t realize Tobirama jumped slightly as well.
“Chief, Deidara is back from the scene of the factory fire.” Jin then walked away.
Tobirama cleared his throat and got up to move.
“I have to speak to one of my guys. Do you mind waiting out in the main hall?”
“Of course not.” With that Sakura gathered her things and took off. Deidara was standing outside the door and Tobirama saw him glance at his Sakura’s backside as she left.
“Deidara, come in.” Tobirama knew he was in for a long meeting. He could not bang his head against his desk.
_______________
Sakura found herself back in the dining hall. There were some old upholstered arm chairs in the corner by the windows. The beat up old chairs looked far more comfortable than the wooden dining chairs. Sakura quickly settled into the worn out chairs and grabbed her phone. She sent a quick text to Ino about the upcoming job. She then silenced her phone and picked up her tablet. Sakura wasn't in the mood for Ino at the moment.
A few minutes went by as Sakura worked. She was so engrossed that she didn’t realize someone sat in the chair next to her until they spoke.
“Hi I’m Kotetsu. You must be Sakura, the person helping with the ball this year.” Sakura looked up to see a man around her age sitting down next to her. He had brown eyes and dark black-blue hair. His hair was slightly wild sticking out at odd angles. He overall was handsome, if not on the plain side.
“Yes, I’m Sakura. Nice to meet you.” Sakura extended her hand to shake his. It was then she noticed the boyish smile that crossed his face.
“So are you going to help us beat the KPD this year? “
“That’s the plan. I heard that you guys are willing to help as well, which will help.”
“Yeah lots of the guys are looking forward to helping.” Kotetsu was now leaning over, arms on his legs and he talked to her.
“Hey Kotetsu, we have to clean the engine. Get your ass over here.” A man with brown hair that covered one of his eyes called out, interrupting the conversation.
“Guess duty calls. I look forward to seeing you around more.” With a wink he ran off. Sakura found herself sighing. She wasn’t sure if she could handle flirting and starting over. She was supposed to be done with this. Stupid men.
Sakura busied herself with her tablet. Hashirama had sent her a list of the crew members of station 9. She hoped all of them would be in agreement with the plan.
_____________________
Deidara finally finished giving Tobirama the report. Sadly it seemed they would have to work with the KPD on the case, which meant he would have to work with either Izuna or Shisui. Tobirama felt a bitter taste come up his mouth. Shisui was decent to work with, but Izuna grated on his nerves.
Tobirama needed to stretch his legs and found himself walking with Deidara out of the office.
“So is the florist single? I can see why the crews jumped to helping with manual labor, Un. “ Tobirama rolled his eyes.
As they rounded the corner he had to stop for a second. Sakura was sitting in one of the beat up chairs, he made a mental note to get new ones the moment they had the extra money. She was hunched over her tablet, engrossed in her work. As he went to speak to her, he heard him.
“Sakura! How is my little brother treating you?” Hashirama bounced into the station, like a monkey with cymbals. Sakura looked up from her work and smiled at him.
“Hashirama it's good to see you again. Tobirama has been great to work with. I am just working on our main event for the ball.” Tobirama let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.
“Brother what are you doing here?” Tobirama made his presence known to the duo. He quickly evaded his brother’s hug.
“I wanted to see how the planning was going. Tell me what is the main event?” Before Tobirama could speak, Sakura cut in.
“Well we still need to discuss it with the crew, but we were thinking of an auction. A day with a firefighter. Thank you for the list, by the way. There are 3 crews in this station, so I hope that if all 12 participate we would raise enough money.” Sakura started to gather her things. Hashirama was deep in thought.
“Don’t worry I’m sure all the guys will jump at the chance. Also count Tobirama and myself in as well.” If Tobirama had no self control his mouth would be hanging open like a fish. What did his brother just say? There was no way in hell he was going to participate in this.
“What was that brother?” Hashirama had a glint in his eye. He went over to Tobirama and slapped his back.
“Oh come on. Don’t be a stick in the mud. This is for charity. Don’t you want to beat KPD?” Hashirama knew exactly what to say to get his brother to agree to this.
“Fine.” Tobirama had no desire to participate in the event. He wasn’t fully on board with it. He wanted to raise more money this year. If the goal was to raise money for charity there was nothing wrong with some competition, right? Plus he couldn't make a scene in front of Sakura and the guys. The moment Hashirama and he were alone they would discuss this.

Native Americans Have Always Answered the Call to Serve: National VFW Day 2020

National Veterans of Foreign Wars Day, September 29, recognizes men and women who have served honorably in a foreign war or overseas operation recognized by a campaign medal, received hostile fire, or qualified for imminent danger pay. Active-duty servicemembers who meet the criteria are also welcome. Members today include veterans of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, the Balkans, the Persian Gulf, Somalia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, and other expeditionary campaigns, as well as those who have served during occupations. Family members of eligible servicemen and women show their support through the VFW Auxiliary.
The organization’s history dates to 1899, when the American Veterans of Foreign Service and the National Society of the Army of the Philippines were organized to secure rights and benefits for veterans of the Spanish–American War (1898) and Philippine–American War (1899–1902). The two organizations merged in 1914, creating the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. The VFW was chartered by Congress in 1936.
The VFW defines its role in its mission and vision statements:
To foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts. To serve our veterans, the military, and our communities. To advocate on behalf of all veterans.
To ensure that veterans are respected for their service, always receive their earned entitlements, and are recognized for the sacrifices they and their loved ones have made on behalf of this great country.
Today, more than 1.6 million people belong to the VFW and VFW Auxiliary. They take part in service and social programs at more than 6,000 posts, including posts on American Indian reservations and in Native communities.
In the early 1900s, the warrior tradition of American Indians seemed to face near extinction. The last of the major conflicts over Native American lands had ended a generation before, when the Agreement of 1877 annexed the Sioux homelands—including Pahá Sápa, the Black Hills—and permanently established Indian reservations. With a handful of exceptions, Native warriors no longer engaged in battle to protect their homes, families, and way of life.
“Native Americans served in World War I even though they were not citizens of the United States.” —Kevin Gover (Pawnee), director of the National Museum of the American Indian
That changed in 1917, when the United States formally entered World War I. In need of a much larger military, the federal government began to promote enlistment, and shortly afterward, instituted the draft. It is estimated that more than 12,000 American Indians served in the U.S. military during the war. At a time when a third of Native Americans were not recognized as citizens of the United States, more than 17,000 Native American men registered with the Selective Service. An estimated 12,000 Native Americans joined the U.S. Armed Forces, some 6,500 of whom were drafted, according to the records of the U.S. Office of Indian Affairs
The largest group of Native service members came from Oklahoma. Members of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma became the military’s first officially organized and trained group of American Indian code talkers. Students of the federal Indian boarding schools volunteered in large numbers—more than 200 from the Carlisle Indian School alone. Native Americans joined every branch of the military, including a number of Native women who volunteered for the Army Nurse Corps. Unlike African American servicemen and women, Native Americans were not segregated into special units, although there is evidence that they were often given unusually dangerous assignments. About 5 percent of Native combat soldiers were killed during World War I, compared to 1 percent of American soldiers overall.
Through the Citizenship Act of 1919, Congress granted U.S. citizenship to American Indians who had served, if they applied for it. Native Americans’ record of patriotism became the catalyst for the broader Indian Citizenship Act of 1924, which recognized all Native Americans born in the United States as citizens.
The United States’ entry into World War II brought large numbers of American Indian warriors back to the battlefield in defense of their homeland. More than 44,000 American Indians, out of a total Native American population of less than 400,000, served with distinction between 1941 and 1945 in all theaters of the war. Servicemen from more than 30 Native nations used their tribal languages as unbreakable codes to transmit vital communications. Among many Native heroes of the war is Ira Hayes (Pima [Akimel O’odham], who grew up on his parents’ farm in the Gila River Indian Community, Arizona; enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1942; and was one of six servicemen who raised the American flag over Iwo Jima, a moment immortalized at the Marine Corps Memorial.
“There is a camaraderie that transcends ethnicity when you serve your country overseas in wartime.”—Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (Northern Cheyenne), Korea veteran
During the Korean War (1950–1953), battle-hardened Native American troops from World War II were joined by American Indians newly recruited to fight on foreign soil. Approximately 10,000 Native Americans served in the U.S. military during this period. Seven American Indians and Native Hawaiians received Medals of Honor for their bravery and sacrifice in Korea. My uncle, William Hall-Zotigh (Kiowa), proudly served in a MASH unit near Inchon and Taegu. Before his death, he was heavily involved in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and presided over funerals for veterans on behalf of the VFW.

Native Americans demonstrated their patriotism again during the Vietnam era. More than 42,000 Native Americans, fought in Vietnam, more than 90 percent of them volunteers. Among the nearly 60 thousand names of individuals killed or missing in action on the Vietnam Memorial Wall are 232 identified as Native Americans or Alaska Natives.
During the 1980s and 1990s, Natives in United States military took part in combat or other hostilities in Grenada, Panama, Somalia, Bosnia and Kosovo, the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Private First Class Lori Piestewa (Hopi) was the first woman killed in action during Operation Iraqi Freedom and the first American Indian woman known to have died in combat overseas.
“I’m excited about the upcoming memorial. With the all-volunteer service, there are a lot of people who have not served or don’t understand what it means to serve. I guess I want people to recognize how often Native people have volunteered. From Alaska to the East Coast, through all the wars, Native people have always volunteered.” —Colonel Wayne Don (Cupig and Yupik), veteran of Bosnia and Afghanistan
According to the Department of Defense, more than 23,000 of the 1.2 million men and women on active duty in the U.S. military today American Indians or Alaska Natives. With the completion of the National Native American Veterans Memorial on November 11, 2020, the museum will honor them and all Native veterans. The museum will announce the larger, ceremonial opening when it is possible for veterans and their families to take part.
The National Native American Veterans Memorial is currently under construction on the grounds of the National Museum of the American Indian on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Congress charged the museum with creating this memorial to give all Americans the opportunity “to learn of the proud and courageous tradition of service of Native Americans.” Their legacy deserves our recognition.
Join us in recognizing the members and mission of the VFW on social media using the hashtag #VFWDay.

134 - Fall Football Preview
There is no I in “team”. This has been a partial list of letters not found in the word “team”. Welcome to Night Vale.
The Night Vale High School Scorpions kick-off the varsity football season this Friday against last year’s district champion, Red Mesa. Following the announcement this summer that Scorpions’ head coach, Nazr al-Mujaheed, would be taking a sabbatical to deal with personal matters, Night Vale promoted defensive coordinator Lutrice Beaumont to head coach. She has ten years coaching experience and was a former line backer for the Scorpions during their heyday as four time state champs in the late 1990’s. This is a historical hire for the high school football program, as Lutrice Beaumont is the first Gemini to become head coach. Beaumont called a press conference this morning to talk about her team and her coaching staff’s expectations for this season. “After only one win last year,” Beaumont explained, “we wanted to change our approach entirely. Instead of a plotting, run-focused offensive, we want our starting quarterback, sophomore Junius Duncan, to really throw that ball around, just chuck that leather (wad) any direction he wants.”
Beaumont’s team motto for 2018 is “we will win, all the time, right now”. Junius Duncan has a small frame at only 5’4’’ and 120 pounds. But he has eight legs and can leap up to 20 times his own height. He has struggled with his accuracy in training camp, as he has zero arms. And the spiny tips of his front legs cause the ball to stick and sometimes deflate.
Senior running back Prince Reynolds, who led the district in rushing last year, returns in full health. Coach Beaumont said Reynolds has been working on his upper body strength in the off-season by installing hydraulic joints on each shoulder. We’ll have more on the upcoming Scorpion football season in a moment. But first, a look at traffic.
Lisa Farmer does not like her job. She does not hate it, either. To Lisa, a job is a paid dare to sit in a chair for 10 hours every weekday for 40 years, for a little over a million dollars, paid out in bi-weekly installments. She commutes 35 minutes each way to her office. During this time, she thinks about the divorce papers her attorney gave her, but that she’s never filled out. She thinks about her husband’s lack of motivation. She thinks about having children. Not whether to have them, but the actual process of birth. She sometimes offers up an involuntary laugh, a reflex response to the forced laughter of the FM drivetime talk show. She forgets all of this when she arrives at home or work. Time pours from her like water from a broken pipe. All this time, lost to unmemorable travel. She measures her life in traffic jams, a mathematical equation that proves nothing. Commutes are the limbo of the weekday. Everything is stasis. Expect delays. This has been traffic.
In her opening press conference, Night Vale Scorpions’ head coach Lutrice Beaumont said there were some rule changes this season that will affect her team’s approach. First, helmet to helmet hits, normally assigned a personal foul penalty, will now be subject to game (ejections) and possible suspensions. Officials are also cracking down on end zone celebrations. Many fans felt the elaborate displays of joy exhibited by players last season were not in the spirit of good sportsmanship. The most egregious example was when Cactus Park’s Jamille Whiteside scored the game-winning touchdown against Pine Cliff. He and the rest of his team mates then performed in the end zone the entirety of the Tony-winning musical sensation “Wicked”. District head of officiating, Jake Camp, announced: “I’m tired of selfish kids making a team sport all about them. In my day, when we scored, we would calmly hand the ball to the ref and jog back to the sideline head down. Maybe.” He continued: “Maybe, uh, a more religious kid might offer a quick prayer to the Brown Stone Spire, an unobtrusive gesture of kneeling, cutting your finger open, drawing a nine-pointed star with your blood, as your team mates danced about shirtless and chanting something in ancient Akkadian or Greek, but nothing ostentatious like what kids these days do. Did you see that one kid who did a backflip? [angrily] A backflip! This is football, not Cirque du Soleil, son!” Camp shouted. He added that millennials are killing everything good in the world.
One reporter reported that current high schoolers are not even part of the millennial generation. Another reporter pointed out that Camp is 33 years old, which makes him a millennial. Camp paused and said, “You wanna be like that? Fine!” Camp then begun to grunt and strain, his face darkened to a deep violet, as long white hair gushed from the top of his head and out of his chin. His posture weakened, his back now hunched. Wrinkles formed around his eyes and lips, and his skin loosened. He then said hoarsely: “I’m 93 now. So you know where you can put that millennial comment of yours!” The reporter assumed Camp meant the sport section of the newspaper, so that’s where the reporter put it.
In the middle of Beaumont’s press conference, assistant coach Christopher Tisdale whispered into her ear and she frowned. When asked to elaborate, she said she’d just received word that another new rule is that all players must have two or fewer legs. Which prohibits her starting quarterback, Junius Duncan from taking the field. Upset by this sudden change, Beaumont cited the Golden Retriever who was allowed to play basketball for Cactus Park back in 1997. They named the dog Airbud, because the dog was the former CEO of an airline. Admittedly, the dog was terrible at basketball. He ran in circles and barked at the coach for treats, while opposing teams took huge advantage of the five-on-four mismatch. But according to Beaumont, a precedent was set for multi-legged players.
Oh, this is terrible news. Junius must be devastated. Beaumont’s press conference is still going on. We’ll get back to it soon.
But for now, when the first bolt of lightning struck the sea, and the first apex of rock crested the tumultuous oceans, the elders among the stars brought life onto the Earth. These children of stardust became humans, became authorities of their tiny planet. They created science and art, and they worshipped their galactic forbearers. But their hubris grew in them like a cancer, and they abandoned the benevolence of their creators. The vigilant determination of life leads only – to death. An ironic ouroboros to be laughed at by the elders of the cosmos. Diet Pepsi. Humans are a knock-knock joke of the gods.
Let’s take a look now at Night Vale High School’s district rivals this season, starting with last year’s champs, the Red Mesa Ant Carpenters. Red Mesa returns their starting quarterback, senior Salman Talib, who leads a dynamic passing offence anchored by junior wide receiver, Trung Pham. Pham’s quick feet, 6’5’’ frame, and nearly 20-inch antlers allow him to break free from smaller defenders. The Pine Cliff Lizard Monitors return with the league’s top offence. Everyone in Pine Cliff is a ghost, making them quite elusive, but the flip side of that is that their defence is terrible. In terms of total tackles made last season, they finished dead last. Pun not intended. But pun certainly embraced, because it’s not bad. Oh… Aha? A-ha. I’m getting word from my producer Ian that is in fact a bad pun, in bad taste. Ian’s grandmother was part of the Great Cataclysm of 2008, which turned all of Pine Cliff into ghosts. He says it’s no laughing matter to those living in Pine Cliff. To-to those residing in Pine Cliff, so. I’ll go back to the part where I said pun not intended.
One team to watch out for this year is the Cactus Park Shark Nurses, who have a strong defence but who have struggled with turnovers. The Shark Nurses’ senior running back Patrick Lyle had 20 fumbles last year, but said he focused on his ball carrying technique in the off season. Coachers worked with Lyle to carry the ball high and tight against his shoulder pads, instead of in his cargo shorts’ pockets.
Desert Bluffs, which has not had a team nor a high school for the past three seasons, has reincorporated in some desert otherworld and will be returning to district to play this year. League officials are concerned about the capriciousness of gateways between our reality and theirs, which could lead to visiting teams becoming lost in either a time loop or disappearing altogether. Theoretical physicist Cedric Drummond from Desert Bluffs Junior College said: “If you only focus on the bad, you’ll never see the good!” Not much is known about this Vultures team other than they’re probably – terrible.
Finally, there’s another new district rival this season, the Whispering Forest High School Wood Dogs. Whispering Forest High opened in 2016 after the forest incorporated as an independent township. No humans live in the Whispering Forest, only trees. Really polite trees, always with a quiet compliment. But if you accept one of their compliments, you too become a tree in their forest. Fun fact: Whispering Forest is the fastest growing town here in the desert. Urban planning experts think that the positivity emanating from the Whispering Forest has been a real draw for people seeking new homes. They’re unable to determine why a need for positivity suddenly became a factor in like 2016, but there it is. The Wood Dogs are sure to be the largest and toughest opponent in Night Vale’s district, but also the slowest, as they are literally trees. Their real strength won’t be in their ability to score or sack the quarterback, but to recruit entire opposing teams to their side before the game ends.
That’s a look at Night Vale High’s rivals this year. Coming up, we’ll check in with coach Beaumont and her team strategy for 2018. But first, a public service announcement.
Friends of the Night Vale Public Library announced the annual used book sale is this Saturday afternoon from 10 to 5. Librarians will hang books from invisible twine attached to blade-based traps, inside a complex cornfield labyrinth. According to the press release, which appears to be written by a detached human finger dipped in its own blood, these are… [clears throat] great books by great authors like Georg Saunders, Mohsin Hamid, and Celeste Ng. Books you really should read. Books you’ll want to reach out and grab, without noticing that the earth below you is lightly covered in branches hiding a spike-filled pit. So come down to the library for the used book sale. No need to shower beforehand, your natural scent makes you easier to track. This has been a public service announcement.
Coach Beaumont has finally completed her pre-season press conference, and she finished it off with quite a statement. When asked what the overall strategy for this year would be, Beaumont said: “Surpriiise!” But she said it just like that, with her eyes wide and arms raised and there was a looong silence as the reporters waited for what was to happen next. The energy faded as Beaumont slowly lowered her hands, a lone cough came from the back of the room. Beaumont then continued: “Oh, our strategy is surprise. We don’t want our opponents to have any time to prepare for us, so we scheduled every single game simultaneously. All five division rivals will play us at once,” she said. “We kick off in like five minutes. I should go. As the leader of this team, I can’t be late for the national anthem, the pledge of allegiance, the eldritch chant of national unity, the Secret Police helicopter flyover, and the pre-game bloodstone bacchanal dance.” Now the reporters frantically shouted the rest of their questions. “Are you going to protest your quarterback’s disqualification?” “How will you compete against five teams at once?” “How many balls will be used?” “Where do we go when we die” and “What is football? Are you a football?” But Beaumont had already left.
I’m getting word that the game has kicked off at the Night Vale High School. Now I’m not a sports fan, but even I’m intrigued. I gotta see this.
Uh, let me take you now To the weather.

The Scorpions got off to a rough start. Two of their defensive line men accepted compliments from the Whispering Forest players. “Oh, that was such a nice tacklllllle, you must be very proud of your training and dedication to this spooooort,” the trees whispered. “We’re impressed by your talents and chaaaarm!” Suddenly, the two Night Vale players were trees. The opposing teams rallied together, handing the ball off to the Pine Cliff running back Alfonso Menendez, who simply could not be tackled. By the end of the first quarter, the Scorpions were down 20 to nothing. It would have been 21, but Desert Bluffs kicker, Leonard Clayton, missed an extra point, probably because he’s so poorly coached. In the second quarter, Night Vale’s Prince Reynolds scored a quick touchdown to make it 20 to 7. They followed that with a field goal after a fumble by Cactus Park’s Patrick Lyle, who was carrying the ball with his teeth, instead of holding it tight to his chest, leaving Night Vale down 20 to 10. Coach Beaumont told her team at half time that they were doing great, but they needed to focus more on the fundamentals of the game. “Keep your eyes on the runners’ hips,” she shouted, “not their feet! Wrap your tackles tight!” She encouraged her offensive players to pick up their correct blocking assignments. “Tim!” she yelled, referring to offensive guard Timothy Lano. “Stop trying to block the trees! They can’t run, and the ghosts, they can’t tackle! Worry about tangible humans, Tim!”
The team seemed dejected without their starting quarterback Junius Duncan. Beaumont began a powerful and inspiring pep talk. She brought in a ten-piece brass band to perform Gustav Holst’s “Second Suite in F” underneath her speech. “You can beat anyone if you believe in yourselves!” she began. “It would totally help if we had Duncan in the game though.” Then she said: “Surprise!” and opened up a Ralphs bag with three pairs of gloves. “Duncan, put these on like you have six arms,” she said. “Can you walk on your back two legs?” Duncan nodded yes, but no one notice because there was no joint allowing free movement of his head atop his thorax. So he had to hiss and leap up and down to demonstrate his bipedal abilities. The team let out a relieved cheer of “Win! All the time! Right now!” and ran onto the field, rejuvenated by their flouting of government issued regulations.
Duncan struggled early with his passes, as he had no fingers to fill his gloves, but he did score six touchdowns by simply leaping 20 yards at a time down the field, and tying up defenders in webs. He was penalized 15 yards, though, for attempting to use his venom to paralyze the bodies of his prey.
In the end, Night Vale won, 52-45, earning the district title before the season even started. Uh, what an exciting game! Carlos and the rest of the family joined me and we ate nachos and drank sodas and shouted cheers like, “Go team go!” and “Ooooh, blood!” And “Ooooooo, bloooood!” Carlos even bought me one of those pointing foam fingers that says “Someone talked! Identify the traitor.” [chuckles]
The whole game was visceral and communal. You know, maybe I’m a sports fan after all. I hope this victory, too, brings some joy to former coach Nazr al-Mujaheed. I’m sure it didn’t heal him, but hopefully it offered him temporary relief from pain.
Stay tuned next for Gentle Takes, our political roundtable where the hosts listen to each other talk about their days while they knit and say, “Thanks for sharing that with me.”
Good night, Night Vale, Good night.

THE PLAGUE SEASON
BEHIND THE SCENES:
The Military Liaison and the External Liaison have alerted Cardinal Berenger of unrest growing in the Tent Cities. Though the movement began with the Northern Tent City, all of the Tent Cities have begun to establish an order and a hierarchy. Classified intel suggests that two individuals from the Northern Tent City are the ringleaders of the new organization, and that they are working to unite all the settlements around the walls in order to infiltrate the Society.
This is not the first time roamers have rallied around particularly brazen individuals to further their interests. Life outside the Society is a constant fight for survival, and objectively, quite miserable. Those who have lived in the settlements for an extended period of time have heard stories about life inside the Society and may have even seen their friends or the young adopted into the fold. It’s only natural that they all want access to the resources and security the Cardinal Authority can provide.
Cardinal Berenger knows that the Tent Cities must be subdued before they become a real threat. She has a plan, one that she hasn’t shared with anyone else. To execute the plan, she’ll need to use her citizens and her Councilors, all while keeping her next move hidden from them all.
FIRST ORDER:
New propaganda has been commissioned, and the Cardinal has ordered that it be distributed on a massive scale. The Propaganda department has been given every resource they require in order to pump out pamphlets, television specials, tracker alerts, education demonstrations, and all other forms of propaganda.
These pieces of “entertainment” and “education” are not simply the normal, run of the mill works that citizens are used to seeing. The aim of the propaganda is to further increase fear of illness, especially the plague, among the citizens. Citizens will suddenly be overloaded with information about how to prevent illness, best healthcare practices, tales of plague tragedies inside the walls from the past, and the signs of the plague. Once that information has been circulated, the propaganda will begin to focus on the rate of illness in the Tent Cities – which, of course, will be extremely exaggerated.
IN-GAME KNOWLEDGE:
Ctrl+F to find your faction/occupation
NOTE **
In-game knowledge is what your characters will start off knowing based on their position in the Society and whether they are a member of the rebellion. Because this is a character driven rp, it's likely that plotting and interactions will lead shift some roles' knowledge. Be mindful of metagaming, but remember that the purpose of a character driven rpg is for you all to help shape the direction the plot goes in.
GENERAL
All citizens will notice the uptick in news and entertainment. Their superiors may even be ordered to dedicate a small slice of the day to a guest speaker who will cover the importance of healthcare and the never ending danger of the plague. Those with young children will hear about War Hero visits to the school and see a number of new kids programs that will teach the consequences of poor health.
At this time, no playable characters, except the Military Liaison and External Liaison, know about the new organization among the tent cities. Roles may speculate as to why there is a sudden spike in Government produced work, but keep in mind that the Cardinal is taking care to keep her true plan a secret. The focus of the propaganda is the plague and healthcare in general, which should not alert most people to anything suspicious.
If probed, officials will tell Society members that they are expecting a bad plague year and want to properly prepare. The Cardinal is playing into the fear that most citizens already have and putting them on red alert. This should be enough for most citizens to take the information seriously and may even cause panic. Who knows what this will lead to! Will citizens began to turn on one another at the first sign of a cold? Will outsiders be looked down on even more? Will relationships crumble because of someone’s health?
RED HAWKS
The Cooper’s intel suggests there have been no reports of the plague in or outside of the city in the past two months. All Cell Leaders have been instructed to pass this information to their members and warn them not to buy into the hysteria. Of course, caution should be exercised, as intel isn’t always accurate, and should a Red Hawk appear too unconcerned, it will raise suspicion.
Red Hawks should be a bit more skeptical of the propaganda than most citizens are, but because they are still people who were brought up in the Society, they may fall victim to the fear. All members of the rebellion should be ready to meet and have been instructed to keep their eyes and ears open for information.
Red Hawk members may use in-game knowledge from their occupation in order to further the cause!

Last night
So I went out for Urban's birthday last night. Got to meet up with Logan as well yesterday. He's now a corrections officer and is hoping to move up the ranks, shouldn't be a problem for him honestly. I went over to Urban's place at The Eilan and Morse came a little after. We were suppose to be going with Ariana as well, but she bailed last minute, which I was indifferent for. Tori and Ashley then came over and we talked a little before eating out. Tori had brought herself food before and Logan, her and I were talking as Urban and Ashley were in the other room. Tori seemed to have a good head on her shoulders, could definitely tell she was smarter than most people, I don't know how I could but I just knew. Urban told me and Logan that Julie (another one of Ashley's and Urban's friend) was going to meet us as well at the brewery. From there we left Urban's place and I drove Ashley's family Tahoe al the way there. Upon starting, any driver could tell the motor mounts about to rip at any point and every light imaginable was on in the dashboard. We arrive there and I get two root beers and some fish tacos, everyone else get's a beer flight and Logan get's a beer mug. We end up sitting outside and to our very eyes there was a man with a bass guitar singing aloud some tunes which I wasn't aware of. Julie then came and she ordered some food and Ashley, Tori and Julie started talking about the upcoming recession. Ashley then mentioned how she might change careers to be a nurse, as opposed to recruiting since she heard one of her friends makes a modest amount of income with their job.
This is where my night started to get bad, they then started talking about her their friend was living her best life and about to buy herself a house as well. I then thought, "To what purpose does it serve to live a life of financial wealth, and have no one to share it with?", in which I conjured another thought, "Why would you subject yourself to such horrendous working conditions just for an easy paycheck?", in which each though was only thought about in my head. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that not everyone is geared to do the rigorous coursework required for a technical field such as software engineering or compute science research.
I also found out that Julie was 39 years old, which I was indifferent towards since I wouldn't care who'd be with us if during the night. We then leave from the brewery and go to Kung Fu Saloon. We drive there and upon entering, was once again embraced with open arms of eighties music blaring from each pillar of the building. After talking and chatting for a while, we ended up at a table and from there was this smoking blonde that apparently was one of Ashley's friend's that came and started talking to us. I didn't talk to her because I locked up because she was gorgeous, but one of the things that threw me off about her was her Gucci bag. I'm not a fan of designer brands, but it just instilled some wealthy girl vibrations for a lack of better words.
Ashely ends up getting a room for Karaoke and has me drive to her dealer in Julie's car for some coke. I didn't understand how at twenty nine and thirty nine that people could still seek refuge in narcotics that provide temporary ailment from their struggles, let alone the pervasive need for something "more", as if going out wasn't enough. Julie already had beared a child and for her to be doing coke was so appalling that it left her with a fixed perspective when it comes to myself. Ashley is twenty nine and continues to party as if she's still in college. I don't judge her for it, but it had me rethinking about going out with them, and her.
I would hate to be in Julie's situation for bearing a child with someone else just to not be with them after, and nearly forty years old doing coke in the back of your own car in a college bar, it's pathetic. I would hate to be in Ashley's situation to be constantly going out and getting hammered. Also why would you want to buy a house for yourself and not have anyone to share it with? It doesn't make sense to me, at all. I can get any girl I want, just trying to figure out first what to do with my career and which direction. I would want my sister to be married WAY before then, and not be in there situation, I'd hate it and wouldn't wish their situation on anyone else. I don't want to go out with them again, going out with them feels degrading to a degree and I don't like it. I can find a girl on my own I don't need their help.
Also saw a little girl with her mom in an apartment, remember to bring this up for career and future.

Home Front: The Civil War in Florida
The Florida Pioneer Museum and Village hosted presentations by Civil War enthusiastic "living historian" actors portraying different aspects of civilian life during the Civil War this past Saturday, June 25. The performers and lecturers came from communities in the north and central Florida area. Lectures were provided on Chaplaincy and Medical surgeons in the training and the aftermath of battles. A field hospital was set up in the Enterprise Methodist Church on the Museum grounds with simulated wounded soldiers, nurses, and medical treatments. Other talks were on the resources of cooking and sewing by military companies and their support wives and followers. Learning about the Civil War in Florida at the Florida Pioneer Museum and Village June 25 Harry Joiner of Lake City, Columbia County spoke of the duties of a wartime Chaplain and Surgeon. During the training and drilling of a "home guard" of Florida volunteers, the living historians moved between first-person and third-person portrayals, like that of Aric Bruggeworth discussing the impact of Confederate conscription acts during the war but once he stepped outside, he was an officer attempting to sign up new recruits, willingly or otherwise. Jackson Crawford, 10, of Longwood, Seminole County, is an accomplished drummer and plays for local company cadence exercises. Larry Fentriss of Land O'Lakes is a fife player and member of several reenactment groups. Drum and Fife portrayers preformed with examples of sounding for events such as reveille, meals, assembly, as well as coded commands and messages during battles. Florida Pioneer Museum and Village offers Many Living History Events The Florida Pioneer Museum frequently has such weekend events with lectures and/or actively simulated battles throughout the year. Strange, Beauty
Paring: Armitage Hux/Reader
Tags: female reader, set during Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, past abuse, workplace relationship, friendship/love, canon compliant, fluff and angst.
Summary: From one tough place to another, Reader works as an engineer in the First Order, and catches the eye of General Armitage Hux.
Word Count: 2,357
Current Date: 2018-01-14
When the First Order recruited the factory that you worked for, there was no possible answer to it other than being yes and surviving. Not that you were a resistance-follower, no. The only qualm you had was that before working for the factory, you had been sold into slavery by your own family, and kept against your will. Now, instead of wearing a hand-sewn sack-like uniform, you were outfitted in the standard First Order uniform, and instead of working on Florrum, you were aboard one of the starships. But there was no time to think of your position in life, or wonder wistfully if you could be elsewhere – there was only work, and then, when there was no work, there was sleep.
You were assigned to a sector of the Subjugator where you worked as a mechanic, following the guidelines assigned by droids to complete tasks. It was still known for human labour to still be highly coveted – in a world where droids all had a sole purpose, sometimes it paid to have people working around the clock. So, you did what you did best; ignoring everything else but your job, and did the best work you could until you were allowed a rest.
It was just that which caused your blunder.
It was on a changing of shifts where you had worked so efficiently, your supervisor, a formidable man, noticed your work. You had no idea what you had done wrong, and within days, you were referred to a superior officer, who then granted you a promotion.
“Congratulations,” the superior officer shook your hand, and passed you a standard-appearing package. “Not many mechanics have the chance of proving themselves to become engineers.”
That was five years ago.
“_________, I swear, we’re getting too old to be single.” Your friend Osira, a fellow engineer, smacked your arm playfully. You were on the walk from the dining hall to the lounge, savouring what spare time after a shift on Zhellday had to offer before curfew, and then work on Benduday. “I for one, intend on working on getting someone.”
You raised an eyebrow. Osira Westmore was no stranger to ‘getting someone’. But then again, her home planet and culture spent before signing up to the First Order was quite colourful with its parings, and she was no stranger to relationships. For her, it was the simple factor of getting someone, and keeping them. For you, it was the opposite.
“Good for you,” you tell her, siding up to the small bar in the lounge. It was indeed small – manned by a droid on one end, mixing drinks, and a bartender attending to orders. “You’re the kind of woman who goes and gets things done when she wants, and I congratulate you.”
Osira harrumphs at that, and wastes no time ordering a row of Tipples for herself, knocking them back as soon as she gets them. She blinks, dazed momentarily, and asks, “So, what are you working on? And don’t say plans for improving stormtrooper blasters, y–you incorrigible girl.”
She slurs the last part, and you laugh, ordering a sparkling water. “Incorrigible, am I?” You repeat, taking a sip. “I’m just doing my job. Following orders.”
An alarm sounds throughout the lounge, a fifteen-minute warning until curfew is put into place. Osira flags the bartender hearing it, and orders another round of Tipples. “Yeah, you rule-following killjoy. You’d have thought, of all the people I could befriend, I get the one who doesn’t want to colour outside the lines.” As her Tipples arrive, Osira wastes no time downing them.
Your fingers uncurl from your glass. “Well, I’m sorry you’re stuck with me.” you tell her, and gathering yourself, walk off toward your room. “See you tomorrow, Westmore.”
On the walk back to your rooms, you try your best to not take her words to heart, and take the quickest route as to not break curfew. Rule-following killjoy. You’re too busy trying to get back to your room, and do not see a man in the upcoming crossroads of the corridors, and it’s entirely your fault when you both smack into one another, and the Datapad he’s holding flies out from his hands, and smacks the metallic wall with a thud.
“Do watch where you’re going!” he snaps, irate.
Your eyes are wide, and heart going so fast you’re afraid it’ll stop beating within your chest. You, a lowly engineer, have walked right into the path of the General himself, and not only that, have possibly broken his Datapad.
“I’m very s-sorry sir,” you amend with a stammer, bowing your head as you hurry to stand before your superior officer. He stands as well, dusting his slacks. You dive once more to gather the Datapad to save him from bending to do so, and hand it to him. “It won’t happen again, sir.”
“I should hope so.” General Hux nods curtly, and adds, “What is your name and rank, officer?”
You swallow, hearing the worst in his tone. By asking for those, you know he’s going to report you to your supervisor, and then you’ll suffer a demotion, and there was no way you’d go back to a mechanic, not when you’re now working on greater things. But you know the penalty for not obeying a direct order from a superior officer, and you acquiesce.
“I am _________, sir, _________ _________. Engineer.” You stand to attention, all-but saluting him. It’s then the second, and last curfew reminder sounds throughout the halls, and your eyes go wide. “I’m sorry, but I have to go, I can’t overstep curfew.” You excuse yourself, raising your hand in a weak salute, and flee.
---
It’s next Benduday when you see him again, and a week later, you’re still trying to keep your cool about the encounter. While work has been excitable – gossip around the ship told of a soon to be rebel uprising – it hasn’t been enough to keep busy with both your hands, and your mind, and while you’re not trying to get the face of the disgruntled General out from your mind, you’re swatting Osira off, trying to stop her from asking too many questions about your disposition for the last week.
It gets too much, and discreetly, before your supervisor catches on, you tell her. “Last Zhellday, after you called me…those things, I ran into General Hux.”
Her eyes grow wider than a moon. “How are you still alive? I heard he’s ruthless!”
You shake your head, remembering how brash he was, at first – commanding, harsh. But you could have sworn that after he asked for your name, the edge had come off from his voice, and you weren’t talking to a terribly stressed general, but just simply, a man.
“No, no, the other one’s that,” you correct Osira, “You mean the one who wears all black, and choked Darryl from maintenance last week. Kylo Ren.”
“Engineers _________, Westmore!” your supervisor snapped, marching toward you both. “May I remind you that you are contracted for designing construction for the First Order, not talking?” He narrows his eyes. “Consider this you first, and final warning before punishment and or demotion, officers.”
“Yes sir.” You said. Osira agreed.
You both returned to working on the calculations for the new weaponised planet. It wasn’t until the day had ended that you spoke once more, or really, looked at your friend (you really did fear punishment and or demotion, and did not take it lightly). But when you did, it was not to Osira, at all, or your supervisor.
It was him. General Hux.
Luckily for you, this time, you weren’t running late for curfew, and you did not knock into him again. Osira had organised a date for herself (“She’s a Stormtrooper, and likes Corellian wine too,” she said) and left alone, you were sitting in the main congregation area for the Subjugator, nursing a glass of white alcohol, and reading the day’s unread reports upon your Datapad.
“Mind if I join you, Engineer?” An educated voice intoned. Only glancing up from the reports, you realised it was General Hux. He wore his greatcoat, and dark uniform, and had a tumbler of whiskey in hand. When you did not protest, he sat beside you on the lounge.
“Please forgive me for asking,” you tell him, aware that you’re talking to the leader of the First Order, “but why are you on the Subjugator? I thought your main vessel was the Finalizer.”
Hux considered your question, and replied, “It’s for an inspection,” he nurses his drink close to his chest, and adds, “Although, I’m not here on business.” You raised a brow, turning off your Datapad to pay full attention to him. “I’ve only just had the time to consider your history. If I should say, you’ve lived a strange life.”
You raised your glass to your lips, somewhat amused. If the General of the First Order believed that, then, well, it must be true; for you, it was just your life. “It all began with a farm on Ryloth, that had no animals.” You looked down, only now remembering all the suffering you’d gone through before you’d been rescued by the First Order, and placing your half-empty wine beside where you sat, you rose to leave. “Please excuse me, General, it’s been quite a long day.”
---
It was a year later when the weaponised planet came to fruition. Life got very busy – the weapon’s plans went into action, and building a planet from metal and mathematics took time and sleepless nights. But in the end, it’s construction was a marvel – breathtaking. Named Starkiller Base, you were one of the first to be assigned from your division to it. Whilst working on it, you were promoted to an architectural role, and luckily because of your career advancement, had access to the evacuation pods and escaped the inferno.
All that hard work, and still, the rebels managed to ruin it.
It was another four months after the destruction of Starkiller Base when you crossed paths with General Hux once again. Supreme Leader Snoke had been killed, and his student Kylo Ren had inherited the title. Jedi master Luke Skywalker had died, but still the Jedi religion prevailed. While the rebels were nearly crushed within an inch of their life, they still found a way to survive. With every win, came a loss, and as much as you disliked it, you were sure the General felt the same way.
You saw him in the hallways of the Finalizer, late at night. The day shift had turned to night, and walking to your own quarters, you heard a whimper, a sort of lost noise nearby. Even though it had been years since your days at the factory, your heart went out to every mistreated soul like you had been, and unable to stop, you sought out the person who was in pain.
General Hux stood in front of the entrance to his quarters, leaning on the wall at an awkward angle, hands wrapped around his midsection. You let out a sigh. Not waiting for his approval, you opened the code pad for his door and hotwired it to open.
“Come on.” You tell him, offering your arm. “You don’t look so good, General.”
He accepts your help, and you walk him into his quarters. They’re the same as your own, apart from a small living area and desk adjacent to a personal kitchenette. Walking him in, you get Hux to sit upon the small couch, and waste no time searching the room for a medical kit.
“What – are you doing?” He asks, slightly out of breath.
Having found the kit, you take it over to where he sits. “You’re injured, sir.” You tell him, and you know he already knows that detail. The fact that he has colour in his cheeks, and real emotion upon his face is enough of a tell, even if you couldn’t see the way he favoured his side, and middle. You begin to undo his jacket, and pushing it from his shoulders, he recoils.
“What are you doing?” he asks, aghast.
You raise your eyebrows. “When I was a slave, I had to treat a lot of the other children for the abuse we got, sir,” you tell him, not touching the subject of your General being somewhat repulsed by being undressed by another person. “If this is the work of the new Supreme Leader, there will need to be medical attention as soon as possible. I could get a droid in –,”
He groaned. “Just – take my damn shirt off, _________.” He grits his teeth.
You do so, and laying him down, see the damage. From what your probing finger can tell of the tender flesh of his stomach and chest, there are a few bruised ribs, and kidneys. The skin is turning green and blue where it hurts the most upon him, and his left wrist seems to be completely out of action. Perhaps broken when he took a fall.
“Oh, General,” you whispered.
He couldn’t look at you. “It’s regular, now. There’s nobody to keep his anger upon a leash now.” His voice crackles, and you see tears start to fall from his crystalline eyes. “I – I don’t know what to do.”
“General –,” you begin to say, fingers moving to touch his shoulder.
“Armitage,” he corrects you, meeting your eyes. “_________, what do I do?”
You consider your words before you say them. “Confront, or cower.” You tell him. “It’s either one or the other, there is no midground between them. You can be the General that the First Order and whole galaxy knows you to be, or a boy.” You cradle his face, and whisper. “I cowered, when I was small…a word of advice, though, it never helped me.”
Armitage makes a noise, and moves to sit. “How do I know I can be strong enough to do that?”
“I’m not quite sure,” you whisper. Slowly, you kiss your fingers, and place them upon his chest, where his heart lays beneath the surface. “But, you’ve always got me.”
