My first and (probably) only headcanon for haikyuu is that no one can tell if Kageyama and Hinata are dating or not.
This is something which has most likely been said before but I still want to add onto it.
Are they Flirting or fighting? No one knows. There have definitely been fists involved and one time Ennoshita may have hallucinated when he heard Kageyama whisper that he was going to have his way with Hinata once they were alone. Maybe it just meant that they were going to fight more, that Kageyama was furious with Hinata and wanted to give him a piece of his mind, so the team were now all on watch duty until the end of the day, always making sure Hinata and Kageyama were never alone.
At the end of the day, before anyone could say anything, the two bolted out of the door and ran off without more than a quick "bye".
(They ignored the frustrated glares both Kageyama and Hinata gave them during the day. They definitely ignored the suspiciously placed bruises on each of their necks the next day. They must have fought a bit too much.)
A bet has been going round the Volleyball teams about whether or not they are together. A bet which Yachi and Kiyoko started amongst the Karasuno players and then the managers of other teams. Except, the players of their teams caught onto it and it has been going strong, even after Hinata went to Brazil. Especially after the Adlers vs Jackals match where most people decided against it.
(It is suspected that Yachi actually knows whether or not they are dating, but no one has gotten her to crack just yet. From the way she smirks whenever someone asks, no one will anytime soon.)
Oikawa is firmly against it, not because he doesn't believe they could ever be together, but because they are both idiots who don't know anything more than volleyball (and each other). Some agree with him.
Kenma is one of the ones who have put his money (and a lot of it) on them being together. There is too much chemistry between the two idiots that even they couldn't ignore.
There's another bet amongst the ones who bet for them being together. When they got together. Kenma says since the end of first year. He seems to know something the orhers don't know. Bokuto likes to think that they confessed just before Hinata went to Brazil and became long distance star crossed lovers. (Akaashi told him to stop being stupid (and then bet alongside Kenma)).
Surprisingly Tsukki is the one to bet on them being together since after the first training camp.
Yachi stayed out of this one. (She knew. She definitely knew.)
Yet even when Hinata and Kageyama become aware of the bets (actually they have been aware of them for years but they won't mention that just yet) they just shrug their shoulders and tells whoever is asking, "We're partners. Even when we're not on the same team."
Oikawa decided to shift his money to the other side, betting that they got together after the Adlers vs Jackals match.
But it was still unclear.
Even when Kageyama and Hinata moved in together, when people stayed over they thought it was just courtesy that one of them would give up their room and bunk with the other. Even when they touched or fought playfully, the others couldn't tell if that was actual affection or just Kageyama and Hinata being Kageyama and Hinata.
It took winning an olympic gold medal together for the truth to finally come out. After the Japan team won, everyone was on a high. In the heat of the moment, Hinata and Kageyama drew each other in for a bone crushing hug, whispering sweet nothings to each other as tears of joy spilt out of both of their eyes.
Their foreheads touched. Suddenly, it was like the entire court was quiet. It wasn't long before lips met and cheers erupted around them.
In an interview later, the both of them would be asked about their relationship.
"We've always been partners. We just thought it was time the rest of the world knew."
The only problem now was, when asked about when or how they got together, both Kageyama and Hinata would be vague. Perhaps they would mention a detail about how they confessed to each other. Yet, no one could tell when exactly it happened.
What they did let people know was that Oikawa was most definitely wrong about his guess and he could go suck it for thinking they were idiots who would take so long to realise their feelings for each other.

Hinata Shoyo from Haikyuu!!
an/tw: i feel like this isn't my best work but i hope you like it anywaysssssss
Masterlist | Haikyuu!! Masterlist
part1 | part2
Tumblr media
Shoyo came running up the stairs towards the rooftop. His boyfriend was waiting for him upstairs to eat lunch together. He was running late due to a mini receiving practice with Sugawara. Once he'd arrived, he saw the [h/c] head sitting quietly on the bench. Looking down to his unopened bento box. Shoyo smiled widely and ran up to him.
"[N/n]!!" he shouted even though the male couldn't hear him. Jumping onto the male and hugged him ever so excitedly. [Name] laughed at his highly energetic boyfriend and hugged him back. "Sorry, I'm late! Sugawara-senpai asked me to stay back for a while for practice," Shoyo signed as he spoke. "It's okay. Shall we eat?" [Name] signed back and the other nodded.
They both happily ate lunch together until Shoyo jolted up, remembering something. He looked at his lover with such determined eyes--mouth full of food. He laid the bento onto his lap and slid himself closer to the other. "I want to introduce you to my team! Is that okay?" he signed excitedly, a smile lingered on his face steadily. [Name] paused, the tip of his chopsticks in his mouth as he stared at Shoyo. He took a couple of minutes to think about it and eventually gave in to his request. He gave Shoyo a subtle nod, along with a small smile. "Why not?" he signed.
Adrenaline rushed through the shorter male's body. He hopped off the bench with his bento in his hands. "Really?! Then, I'll introduce you later during practice. Okay?!" he proposed. This time, he was jumping on the spot. [Name] chuckled, holding Shoyo's hand with his. "Calm down.." he spoke up, words slurring close together, but Shoyo was able to make it out. He retracted his hand and signed, "I can't read your lips if you speak too fast,"
"Oh, sorry!" the decoy quickly apologized by making a gesture of pinching the bridge of his nose, then opened his hand with fingers closed, and he lowered it with a slight bow. He grinned at his boyfriend before hugging the life out of him. He then continued to ramble on about what he had planned for the meet-up.
Soon enough, it was already practice time. Shoyo waited for [Name] outside his class. Bouncing on the spot as excitement filled him. Watching the taller male packing his bag with a huge smile. Once he was ready, he intertwined his hand with the other, dragging the poor boy out towards the volleyball gym.
"Sorry, I'm late!" Shoyo yelled as he slid the gym doors open. Capturing all the attention from everyone in the place. "Oh! Hinata! It's okay!" the silver head third year assured, walking towards the couple. "Who's this? Are you recruiting new members?"
"Oh, no! He can't play. This is my boyfriend, [L.Name] [Name]!" he proudly announced, squeezing the [h/c] head's hand.
The others began crowding around the couple and asking questions. Curious about their relationship and such. While they converse, Kageyama was fiercely observing the boy that Shoyo brought in. The stare was so intense that Tsukishima, who stood not far from him, thought he was planning murder. "Oi, are you going to stare at him until your eyes pop out? Or are you tragically in love with shrimp's partner?"
The setter snapped out of his gaze and glared at the other. "Shut up," he told him off, looking back at [Name]. "I was wondering why he looked familiar," he paused, recalling his memory. "Yukigaoka Junior High's number 7. A middle blocker. One of Hinata's teammates that I played against," he noted, placing his finger on his chin. Tsukishima hummed in response, not really caring much.
Suddenly, the blue haired setter felt chills down his back. He heard a snicker beside him. "Seems like he heard you over all that noise," the blonde gave him a snarky look. Kageyama looked up to see [Name] staring at him like a killer pin pointing his next target. It was a look that he was familiar with. [Name] was the same person who punched his face after the game ended with his team winning against his.
Kageyama grabbed onto the net as he leaned down to Shoyos's height. "What have you been doing for the last three years?" he taunted the shorter male. Unfortunately, [Name] had overheard him, and it prompted him to swing a hard punch towards the blue haired male's face. Yelling and screaming at him while his teammates had to hold him back.
"Who do you think you are to say that, dickhead? Damn asshole! Don't you dare question his abilities!" [Name] continued to scream while glaring at the setter who was holding his nose in great pain while getting off the floor with a couple of his teammates' help.
The middle blocker got kicked out from making such a commotion and inflicting violence on the opponent team. The competition had to be put on hold for a moment.
"Oh! [L.Name], I remember you! You were the middle blocker that played in the Junior High game last year, right?" Daichi asked him. [Name] glanced up and gave him a short nod. "That's right! You were that tall dude who was blocking Kageyama's team like a maniac!"
"Yeah!!! [N/n] was so cool!! I owe him a lot for most of the points we scored!" Shoyo began jogging on the spot, pumped up with energy. "Why isn't he playing volleyball then?" Kageyama's voice dominated over the others. Causing everyone to look at him. Dampening the lively mood that that the decoy created. [Name] nudged his boyfriend's arm, arching a brow. Wanting to know what's happening. "Kageyama wants to know why you aren't continuing playing volleyball," he signed, catching everyone off guard.
"He's deaf," Shoyo turned back to face them while signing it for his lover too. The [h/c] haired sighed softly and crossed him arms. Used to this situation. "Oh, I'm sorry, Hinata. We didn't know. No wonder you kept answering the questions," the captain apologized while bowing at them out of respect. The volleyball club followed along. [Name] read Daichi's lips and showed a smile. "It's okay," he muttered. Easing everyone's guilt. "Yep! [N/n] doesn't mind it! He's very cool!" he let out a light hearted laugh, clinging on to the said male's arm.
"Wahh.. You guys are adorable! [L.Name], why didn't you tell me you are with Hinata?!" Yachi joined in. Trying her best to communicate through whatever she had learnt so far for sign language. [Name]'s eyes widened a little. Touched that she was learning to sign. "Oh? Yachi, you know [N/n]?" Shoyo tilted his head. "Yachi is my classmate, Sho," [Name] replied for the blonde then smiled at her. He was about to sign back but he thought of how difficult it would be for her to understand. So he loosen his bag from his shoulder and took out a notebook and a pen. Writing down what he wanted to say.
"Shoyo is very passionate for volleyball so I let him practice as much as he can. I want to see him be the next Little Giant!" the female first year read out loud. Everyone else was moved by his words. Shoyo looked up at his boyfriend with trembling lips. Falling in love with him all over again. "[N/n]..." he whined.
The day continued on with practice. A singular chair was set for [Name] to sit on and watch. He was mesmerized. He didn't get to see Shoyo play for so long. There was a drastic change with his speed, his skills. Even his jump is higher. He felt chills run down his back. It was thrilling, amazing. So amazing that he was jealous. It wasn't Shoyo that he was jealous of, but his teammates. People around him. He watched the tangerine landed onto the wooden floor after making a good score with his spike. Bouncing around Kageyama. Obviously, he couldn't hear what he's rambling about but he knows that Shoyo was praising the heck out of that boy. He let out a quiet sigh and leaned back against the chair.
Practice has finally ended and [Name] told his partner that he'll wait for him outside. Once he was out, Kiyoko walked up to Shoyo and gave him a light tap. Causing him to stop untying the net. "Oh Shimizu-senpai? Is there something wrong?"
"Hinata, I've noticed that [L.Name] was a little sad when he was watching the match. Is he alright?" the third year question, concerned for the male. "[N/n]..? I'm... not sure. Uh- I'LL LEAVE EARLY TODAY!" he announced loudly, rushing out the gym and straight towards the club room to change. Packing his stuff up and made his way to his boyfriend by the gym doors.
The male stood in front of the other, huffing for air. "[N/n], is something wrong?!" he signed. [Name] was startled a little and tilted his head. "Nothing's wrong? Why the sudden question?"
"Shimizu-senpai was worried about you. She told me you were sad! Did something happened?"
"Nothing happened, really. Should we go home now?" [Name] showed him a reassuring smile. Shoyo frowned a little but hesitantly nodded. The taller male gently grabbed his hand and intertwined with it. Lifting it up to kiss the back of his hand. "Don't worry too much.." he uttered. The other looked down and replied with a simple "Okay," while [Name] guided them forward.
As they walked together, the [h/c] haired couldn't help but reminiscence the moment where Shoyo was ecstatic upon scoring that goal. He could imagine the cheers he shouted. But he could not hear it. Why can't he hear it? Why can't he fucking hear it? He was supposed to remember it!
As the boy was having a breakdown in his head, his steps slowed down. Dragging down the other male too. Shoyo turned around, shocked to see his boyfriend sobbing. Alerted, he moved closer and wiped away [Name]'s tears. "What's wrong, [N/n]. Why are you crying??" he asked whilst cupping the other's face. [Name] replied with slurs of shaky words.
"I-I can't remember y-your voice,"

Spicy Calendar
Continuation from this post
Kuroo gets some odd looks when he proposes the idea to his bosses. With the recent success of the all-star game though, they take the chance on him. After all, he hasn’t steered them wrong yet. So he sets off with his backpack and starts to recruit players for the calendar.
He figures he should start local this time so he heads off to find Bokuto. Kuroo doesn’t even get the chance to explain the concept to him before his bro excitedly agrees. Miya Atsumu, who has an unfortunate habit of listening into conversations, also pipes up with his assent. Atsumu then does what Atsumu does best, and begins to run his mouth. He bets that his spread would be the most popular, which gets the attention of his former teammate, Suna, who agrees to join just to prove the bottle blonde wrong. Komori, being Suna’s current teammate, also joins citing that he couldn’t pass up the chance to join forces with Suna and mess with the blonde setter.
And when it comes time to convince Kageyama, it doesn’t take a lot of effort on Kuroo’s part as the younger man is already well aware of his status as a sexy setter. Kageyama being part of the calendar also means that Hinata calls Kuroo up and practically begs for a spot. Ninja Shoyo is going to be a big sell to the international community.
Kageyama also talks to Ushijima about what a great opportunity the calendar is to attract fans to the game. The stoic man sees his point and also agrees to pose for a picture.
Of course, Ushijima’s participation gets back to Oikawa who then proceeds to leave a lengthy voicemail for Kuroo - How dare he ask Ushiwaka? Why hadn’t he been asked first? Was Kuroo not aware of the amount of fans he had? It was almost enough to make Kuroo wonder if having Oikawa in the calendar would be worth it. In the end, he couldn’t deny the amount of interest Oikawa would draw so he agrees to let the brunette join.
Getting 8 players was good, but obviously not enough to fill a calendar. So Kuroo decides that the last four slots would be decided through a fan vote with the #1 pick being the choice for December.
It is now a week later and the fans have made their voice heard. Kuroo keeps the results a secret from the players. He cackles as he looks at who won knowing that at least one of the participants would be very unhappy. He wasn’t going to miss that reaction and so he decides to arrange a Zoom meeting with the players and makes them promise not to open the calendar until they’re all in the call.
It isn’t until a month later that the boys receive their calendars in the mail.
September goes to Suna whose piercing stare and expertly done eyeliner captures the gaze of many. Bokuto gets October because the masses are obviously enthralled with his muscles (his ass!). And to the surprise of even the man himself, Komori gets November. His wide grin and even thicker thighs captivates the hearts and likely also the underwear of many voters.
Then there comes the man-of-the-month for December.
“Are ya fucking jokin’ me?” Miya Atsumu screeches because there on the cover is his twin brother.
Osamu’s wearing an apron. He’s only wearing an apron. It’s so small that his nipples are peeking out and it only falls to his upper thigh. In his right hand, he brandishes a sharp knife as he holds a much sharper grin on his face.
“Damn Miya!” Oikawa exclaims in awe at the picture. “He could devour me any day.”
Ushijima nods his approval. “I agree.”
“Myaa-sam looks so hot!” Bokuto shouts excitedly.
Atsumu groans as he buries his head in his hands. “Stop talkin’ bout my brother like that!” And then he pouts at Kuroo. “Samu ain’t even an active player anymore. What the hell’s up with that?”
Kuroo chuckles. “The fans wrote him in and you know I only do what’s best for the sport.”

Hogwarts AU (Haikyuu!!)
Tumblr media
feat. Kuroo Tetsuro
As requested by @forgetou (hope you love it bb!)
Previously: Miya Atsumu. Miya Osamu. Kita Shinsuke
Masterlist link here
Warnings: Tooth-rotting fluff
A/N: Any other characters you’d like to see? Send me an ask!
(happy to do any characters other than Kenma / Hinata / Tendo - I don’t trust myself to do them justice!)
------------------------------------------------------------------
‘So I hear you’re going to fill in for Hinata next match?’
Your head whips around. A growl builds up in your throat.
You’d recognise that sleaze ball voice anywhere - Kuroo Tetsuro, Slytherin prefect, top student in potions and more importantly, the scumbag keeper that formulated a strategy (alongside Oikawa, that brat - but that’s besides the point) to completely break down the Gryffindor chaser trio of Hinata, Lev and Yamamoto when Iwaizumi was out for an injury the last Quidditch match.
If you weren’t playing against them, you’d admit that the Slytherin strategy was perfect. Suna and Daishou caged Hinata in with non-stop bludger head shots, and the Miya twins flew literal circles around Lev - still a beginner, so you’ll cut him some slack, so much that the two idiots collided when Kuroo feinted forward and they thought they finally had a chance to score.
So now you have to step into Hinata’s position for the match next weekend.
You like Quidditch well enough, but you don’t have an overwhelming passion for it the way Hinata or Oikawa or Atsumu or heck, even Yaku does - monsters, the lot of them. You play it for fun, you enjoy being a reserve member, and you’d never expected that you’d have to play in an actual match with Iwaizumi, Lev, Hinata and Yamamoto all playing chaser already.
You’re scared - and you hate feeling this way, especially a Gryffindor like you, so you snarl and hiss and kick your feet when Yaku drags you away from Kuroo, the demon keeper scolding you not to ‘cause a scene in the Great Hall - seriously, what are you five?’, though Lev and Yamamoto cheers you on.
‘Come on, let’s make a bet on our match next weekend’, Kuroo calls after you, and you flail hard in Yaku’s arms enough that Yaku loses not just his balance, but his grip on you.
‘Sure’, you shout defiantly, not caring that the pair of you have attracted an audience. You can see the entire Slytherin team five steps away, matching Cheshire grins on all of their faces. Your blood boils and you’re ready to accept the terms of whatever stupid bet this rooster head proposes.
Kuroo’s grin widens. ‘I bet you can’t even get five goals past me.’
‘I bet you I can’, you retort, even as your heart sinks. Kuroo isn’t quite as good as Yaku, but he’s devious and brilliant at feints and you’re not even a starter on the Gryffindor team. But you’ve dug yourself into a hole, and you’re determined to commit to your position, damnit, so you keep your voice steady as you ask for his terms.
‘If I win, you’ll have to go on a date with me the next weekend’. He waggles his eyebrows at you suggestively, eyes crinkling at its corners in amusement as you mouth an outraged ‘what the hell?’ and Yaku starts shouting bloody murder himself.
You gather yourself and resist Yaku’s attempts at pulling you away. ‘And if I win, what do I get?’
Kuroo laughs airily. ‘I highly doubt that, but name your price, sweetheart’.
You think of the most embarrassing thing you could possibly inflict on this smug bastard, your eyes landing on the ridiculous mop of hair on his head and it’s your turn to grin, sharp and full of edges.
‘Fine. If I win, you’ll shave your head’.
‘Deal.’
Kuroo sticks his hand out to you and you take it. You feel like you’ve just made a deal with the devil himself.
------------------------------------------------
Iwaizumi nags you to bits when Yaku tells him of the entire debacle, the Gryffindor keeper throwing himself dramatically across the locker room bench, complaining that he’s done being a damn babysitter to this lot of idiots without any sense of self preservation.
‘You’re gonna need a whole lot of training in that case’, Iwaizumi tells you grimly, and you sigh, because you know it’s not going to do any good.
And you’re right, because even though you’ve spent the entire week training and running drills in snow and sleet and rain, it’s not enough. You barely get three goals against Kuroo in the match, let alone five - and to be fair, one of them was when you literally threw Lev against him when the referee wasn’t looking, so you resign yourself to his mocking looks when the whistle blows, marking the end of the match where Oikawa outsmarts Kageyama to grab the snitch out of the air first. You feel a kinship with the captured snitch, the pathetic fluttering of its wings so much like your futile attempts to win the damn bet.
Kuroo smirks at you knowingly when you refuse to take his hand at the end of the game. ‘I guess I’ll be seeing you next weekend?’ he asks, eyes glinting as you huff and fold your arms across your chest.
‘Fine, I guess’, you answer with a distinct lack of grace. You don’t notice when his smirk turns into a genuine smile.
------------------------------------------------
The Gryffindor boys crowd around you, groaning in disappointment when you tell them no they’re not allowed to follow you around Hogsmeade, even if you’re on a date with Kuroo Tetsuro - and no, Lev, a disguise is not going to work, your height and ridiculous hair makes you far too conspicuous for that!
‘I’ll beat him up if he does anything’, Iwaizumi threatens, and you roll your eyes at his overprotective streak.
‘I’ll be fine’, you reply, shrugging off Yaku’s attempts at giving you ridiculous magic artifacts intended to ward off wandering hands. Kuroo Tetsuro may be insufferable and smug and a general pain in the butt, but he’s not an absolute piece of shit - plus, you’re handy with your wands in duels so you’re certain you can handle anything he throws at you.
You don’t even bother putting on a lick of makeup when you prepare to meet him. He magicks an enchanted paper plane to land on your desk during potions to tell you that he’ll pick you up from Gryffindor tower at three o’clock sharp, and he’s leaning against the pillar with feline grace as you tumble out of the portrait hole, your teammates shooting him deadly glares as he sweeps you off with his palm warm against the small of your back.
‘Want to grab a drink first?’ he asks, with a surprising amount of concern when your nose turns pink in the cold.
You nod hesitantly, expecting him to drag you into the pink and white monstrosity that is Madam Puddifoots to complete your humiliation, but he doesn’t - holding the door open to the Three Broomsticks, ushering you into the corner booth, ordering a pint of butterbeer for you.
‘My team’s not here, don’t worry’, he says, laughing when you glance around the pub, eyes narrowed for any signs of that odious Oikawa or the bothersome Miya twins - or worse, snarky Suna and devious Daishou, but Kuroo isn’t lying, none of them are around to witness the indignity of your date with one Kuroo Tetsuro.
‘Do you drag unwilling girls into pubs often?’ you snark, tapping your fingers on the table irritably.
‘Nah, only you’, he answers easily, smirk widening with mirth when you wrinkle your nose at him. ‘Come on, lighten up a bit - we might as well get to know each other since we’re going to be spending the whole afternoon together.’
‘Fine’, you say sourly, brightening only when the bartender brings your drinks. ‘Why don’t you tell me about yourself’.
And so even though you’ve been classmates with Kuroo for years, you learn for the first time that he’s not intending to be a professional Quidditch player when he graduates next year, even though you admit he’s a talented keeper in his own right.
‘Really? You’re giving up Quidditch?’
‘Yeah - I have it all thought out I’m going to study potions further and figure out how to revolutionise the potions industry - d’you know the muggles have a pharmaceuticals industry that’s like our potions industry, only hugely profitable?’
It’s so typical of a Slytherin that you can’t help but snort.
But then he disarms you with funny stories of himself growing up. You learn that his parents separated when he was only five, and as a result, he stayed mostly with his grandparents growing up. You learn that he was lonely and shy and awkward - really? you? you choke on your butterbeer incredulously  - at least until he moved next door to Kenma from Ravenclaw.
‘I introduced him to Quidditch, and he’s a natural at coming up with strategies’, he says proudly, proceeding to chatter fondly of quiet, unsociable Kenma, who you can tell is his little brother in all but name and blood.
You tell him about growing up with three older brothers - all Gryffindors, just like you. He listens to your stories about breaking your arm when you stole your eldest brother’s broom, chuckles at your recounting of the pranks you pull on your teammates to remind them that you may be a girl, but you can take of yourself just fine - because Iwaizumi and Yaku tend to take their protective side a tad too far sometimes.
It’s so pleasant that you forget that your date is the result of a bet, and you don’t even think twice about raising a napkin to gently wipe the froth from butterbeer off the corner of Kuroo’s mouth - it comes with the territory of being teammates with messy eaters like Hinata and Kageyama - until he freezes in shock.
‘I’m sorry!’ you blurt out, mortified. But instead of teasing you for your forwardness, Kuroo turns bright red and gapes at you. He must think you’re an idiot. ‘Um - d’you want to check out Honeydukes before they close?’ you ask, in a desperate attempt to diffuse the awkwardness of the situation.
That jolts Kuroo out of his daze. Thankfully, any awkwardness vanishes when he slides out of his seat to steal the bill from you. You complain because he refuses point blank to split the bill with you, and he even playfully keeps his hands above his head to avoid your attempts at pressing coins into his hands until you reach the candy store.
You watch in amusement as he loads his basket with chocolates and sweets for his team. He gets dark chocolate for Miya Osamu, and white chocolate for his twin Atsumu - at this point, I’m convinced they’re just determined to like the opposite of what the other prefers just to be contrary, he laughingly tells you. He gets creamy nougats for Oikawa - I should stop by the bread store to get him mlik bread, but his fangirls spoil him enough so I shan’t, he says. Ice mice for Suna to prank the twins with, tooth flossing stringmints for Daishou - he needs to clean his fangs, he jokes, and a whole bunch of chocolate frogs to be used as bribes for Kenma to go to bed on time.
It’s lovely and warm in the store. You have a good time tossing fizzing frisbees behind the storekeeper’s back at Kuroo, dodging as he tries to drop jellybeans down your shirt. At the checkout counter, you protest again when he slyly tells the cashier that he’ll pay for your purchases on top of his, and he doesn’t even let you carry your own chocolates as you’re walking back to the castle.
‘I’m perfectly capable of carrying a bag of chocolates by myself’, you huff, annoyed that yet another boy is treating you as though you’re made of glass.
‘I believe you’ Kuroo replies emphatically, pressing his hand to his chest with  dramatic flair. ‘But I’m also a kind and considerate soul, because someone forgot to bring her gloves, and I’m going to need to save your hands if you actually want a shot at trying to get more goals past me next time’.
You scowl. ‘Fine’, but you relent grudgingly. You didn’t even know he noticed that your hands are numb and cold. You’ve just never enjoyed the cold, and to make matters worse, it’s snowing. A chilly wind picks up, and you sneeze thrice in quick succession.
‘Can’t wait to get back indoors, or can’t wait for the date to be over?’, he comments as you pick up your pace, trudging through the cold wet snow. You open your mouth to retort, but your jaw drops when he tugs you to a stop, tucking his cloak securely over your shoulders. His body heat and the faint scent of cinnamon and butterbeer still lingers in the fabric and you can’t help but wrap his cloak tighter around yourself.
‘There’, he says, satisfied. ‘Better?’
You nod, not trusting yourself to respond.
He walks you all the way back to Gryffindor tower and when you try to return his cloak, to your surprise, he refuses to take it back.
‘Keep it for our next date’, he tells you cheekily, laughing when your eyes widen and you choke on your breath.
‘I don’t recall hearing you ask for a second date’, you reply archly when your body finally stops its attempts at expelling your lungs from your chest.
‘Well, I am now’, he replies.
You look at him. Though the smirk he wears on his lips is unwavering, you can see a hint of uncertainty in his eyes. And though you’d never think you’d ever say it, but the afternoon was a pleasure, and Kuroo was a lovely date.
You - you like him, this adorable dork of a boy who’s both charming and confident yet awkward and uncertain at the same time. He’s caring and funny and ambitious and there are so many facets of him that you’ve only discovered today - and if you’re being honest with yourself, you’re curious enough to want to delve deeper into the enigma that is one Kuroo Tetsuro.
‘Fine’, you mumble, the tips of your ears turning pink. This time it’s definitely not from the cold.
‘Yeah?’ he asks, quietly, uncertainly.
‘Yeah’, you reply softly, casting your gaze down to the floor, suddenly shy. You don’t notice him take a step forward, startling as he gently tilts your chin up to face him. Your first instinct is to snap at him for coming so close, but he’s too quick for you to even react, leaning down and pressing his lips to your forehead, tenderly tucking loose strands of hair behind your ear.
‘Next week then’, he says, with a wide smile before sweeping off, leaving you standing in the middle of the corridor, mouth open in shock.
The portrait door swings open.
‘WHY ARE YOU IN GREEN AND SILVER?!’
‘HOLY SHIT, WAIT A MINUTE IS THAT KUROO’S CLOAK?’
‘Did he curse you? DO WE NEED TO DEFEND YOUR HONOUR?’
You bury your burning face in your hands. Your teammates are not going to take this well.

“What does she have that I don’t” the amount of times that, that sentence had played over in my head was starting to exhaust me. Remembering the desperation in my voice caused my nose to scrunch up in a cringe until I shook the thoughts out of my head. Walking away from bokuto that night had been the second hardest thing I’d ever had to do in my life so far.
Weeks and weeks later I’d still had the ache in my chest the tears still welled up in my eyes whenever I thought about him with her, but these tears never fell. I hadn’t fully cried over him in weeks and I patted myself on the back for that. I could feel myself starting to move on. To forget.
I still cheered for the MSBY Black Jackals, but I had started online college to get my fashion degree. I’d always had a dream to work for a big corporation like vogue. Things in my life were finally starting to look up, and Miya Atsumu had taken the place that bokuto had left open that night.
He was my support system. Coddling me when he could in the weeks following bokutos wedding. I was unaware of his feelings. Oblivious at first. Until I started to notice the lingering touches he left, and although I was worried about hurting him, it excited me.
— — —
Two years had passed since the night I realized I would never feel my best friends embrace they way I craved. Two years, and now I craved a different persons embrace. The person I’d been dating for a year now, and in the second year of the two years I’d spent healing I’d slowly started mending my friendship with Bokuto. Of course I’d spoken to atsumu about it, and he’d shared his concerns but I was serious about the blonde man who’d unexpectedly stolen my heart.
I had been so caught up in Miya Atsumu it was like highschool all over again. He made me feel alive, and I grounded him when he felt like he was drifting away. The separation from his twin took a harder toll on him than he ever would have realized. So being the loving girlfriend I was I’d organized a night out with the Jackals; Kotaro and koyuki, Kiyoomi, Hinata and kageyama me and Atsumu, and Osamu and his girlfriend. It would be the first time we would all be together since the wedding.
I was nervous and this night would be the start of something out of anyone’s control. It started off normal Osamu and Atsumu hugging and exchanging pleasantries before they would start bickering and trying to compete over something stupid during dinner.
Shy kageyama who had been so stiff at the wedding seemed to be in his element with his arm draped over hinata’s shoulders while he whispered in his ear. The ginger smiling lovingly at his fiancé and it got me thinking about marrying Atsumu. It sparked a tsunami of feeling throughout my body and I found myself smiling to myself before, Cadence —osamu’s stunning girlfriend from the states— bumped my shoulder with hers and smirked at me.
“I’m glad you came up with this idea. Samu was starting to get all pissy about not being able to see his brother.” I smiled sheepishly and blushed as I shook my hand, “it was nothing tsumu was getting the same way and I really wanted to meet you so it was a win win.” She smiled and I caught bokuto looking at me from across the table. The chair next to him empty.
I smiled and leaned across the table, “hey bo! Where’s the missus?” His smile faltered slightly and if I wasn’t so good at reading bokuto I would have missed it entirely but I didn’t, “oh she had to stay late in the office tonight so she couldn’t come.” I gave him a sympathetic smile and he shrugged before the waiter came to our table and I turned to Atsumu.
Later on in the night I had gotten pretty tipsy the champagne finally hitting me, and I smiled lazily at Atsumu, adoration in my eyes and he smirked, “s’the alcohol finally getting to ya pretty girl?” He asked and I nodded before putting my forhead on his upper arm and sighing.
He moves to stand up taking a glass and a knife with him, and my eyes widen in horror over what he’s about to do. He clinks the knife on the glass a bit to carelessly and it breaks, “ah!! tsumu ya moron what the hell are ya doin?” Osamu asks standing up abruptly to avoid the liquid as a waiter rushes over to clean up the mess.
Atsumu smiles and turns to the waiter and apologizes before looking over the table at our friends, “well I just wanted ta toast ta my amazing girlfriend who I would not have if it weren’t for that idiot right there,” I facepalm as he points at bokuto and bokuto winces slightly before looking at me pained and I mouth a sorry to him.
“So thank ya buddy cause if ya weren’t oblivious I would never have gotten such an amazing partner who loves me so much that she brought my annoying little brother out here to see me.” I hear Osamu groan and roll his eyes.
“you’re only three minutes older than me ya troll.” Atsumu smiles patronizingly at osamu, “shut yer trap samu yer elder is talkin'.” Everyone laughs at that and he finally sits down before I hit his shoulder and smile at him slightly, “you’re an idiot tsum-tsum” he shrugs, “but I’m yer idiot right y/n?” And then he plants a big sloppy kiss on my cheek and I squeal in disgust.
The amount of happiness and joy coursing through my body had been missed. I was finally over the one person I thought I would need to live, and with the person I was destined for. I finally had what bokuto had. I couldn’t be happier.
After that night things between me and bokuto were tense for awhile. I brushed it off as he thought maybe I was still hung up on him. Oh how I couldn’t have been more wrong. I had no idea the anger and jealousy that was bubbling up under bokutos skin, and the most frustrating part of all of the bullshit that was going on, was he didn’t understand why he felt like this. He was happily married. I mean as happily married as one person could be right?
It only got worse though when two weeks later Miya fucking Atsumu was calling him asking for his help to propose to his best friend. He was annoyed and irritated and his wife was coming home at two in the morning smelling different than when she had left. It was not a happy time for him, but he obliged telling him about how the beach would be the most perfect place, and to make sure that he does it at night.
He also added in that he should create a pathway lit by fairy lights because I would simply die over it, and how I didn’t like diamonds so make sure it wasn’t a cliche ass diamond.
And that’s how I found myself on the beach my heart had completely broke on, a week later in front of the man I love as he kneeled with a gorgeous jeweled ring in a black velvet box in his hands.
“Will you y/n y/l/n make me the happiest man in the world and marry me?” The tears collecting in my eyes were the happiest tears I’d ever cried in my life as I knelt down and hugged him around his neck, “yes yes!! Yes! Of course I will tsumu”
We hadn’t seen bokuto in the distance watching us with tears in his eyes as he realized what he’d lost. As he wished he could go back in time and do it all over. Do things differently.
Maybe he would have let you keep his jacket on in that storage supply closet. Maybe he should have asked you to get boba instead of koyuki, maybe he should have realized sooner he was projecting onto koyuki because he was scared to love his best friend the way he knew you loved him.
So as he stared at the RSVP card in his hands with yours and Atsumu’s names on it in fancy handwriting. He wonders if this is how you felt when you had gotten his card with koyuki, he wonders if you had felt as lost and hopeless, and torn between wanting you to be happy and also wanting you to be with him instead. So as he swallowed the same lump you had swallowed two almost three years ago he realized that this was some kind of sick karma.
He felt partially responsible for the mess that this had become. You and him were never meant to be.

you shot out of bed and pulled your large boyfriend after you
you opened your window and sat on the window sill, swinging your legs around to the other side

"slow poke! now push!"
he pushed you, running while you two shouted and laughed into the night, doja cat and NIKI playing on his speaker
i just know this mans is a doja cat fan
Nishinoya
Tumblr media
nishinoya was a very energetic and fun person, and you were as well, but you just weren't as reckless
as you two walked down the road to your house, nishinoya rambled on and on about practice and his day
you didnt mind, being way less talkative than him, you liked to listen to him
he suddenly jumped into the air, a big happy and excited smile on his face as you could practically see a light buld above his head
"can we take a picture?"
"whats the catch?"
"okay okay, what if we do a handstand!"
you giggled at his request and he looked at you with hopeful eyes
"yes, but if i get hurt your gonna give me a piggy back!"
he sets up his camera against his school bag and sets the timer, running back to where you were
"okay okay, GO!"
you both did a handstand and held it until the timer went off and his phone clicked

hinata loved going anywhere with you, as long as you were by his side he was already having so much fun
one day you asked him if he wanted to go to the beach, and he practically shouted in excitement
the next day, saturday, you two left in the morning to take a bus to the nearest beach, and hinata brought his bike
when you guys arrived he walked around with his bike as you ran around slightly ahead oh him in the sad
hinata had to watch over his bike so we couldn't run around with you, but then he got an idea
"hey, do you wanna go on a ride along the shore?"
"OH. MY. GOD. YES!!"
he hopped into his bike and you climbed onto the back, and you two ride along the shore at a decently quick pace
the air in your face made you feel free and you lifted your arms up, closing your eyes as you let the air hit you
hinata would take a quick glance back, but it was just long enough to see the beautiful look on your face that made him smile
-
Tsukishima
Tumblr media
even though tsukishima was cold to everyone else, he was slightly less cold towards you, and hed never admit it but you made him soft
i hc tsukishima secretly being a soft boy who enjoys relaxing and reading in his alone time, sometimes even with you
one day you come over to surprise your boyfriend, his brother opening the door for you as you greeted him and his mother.
you made your way to his room and turned the door nob
"oh tsukki!"
you opened the door and saw your boyfriend laying in a pair of yellow and black plaid pajama pants and a navy green sweater, reading as some music played on his speaker
he groaned and closed his book as you walked over to his bed and jumped into his arm
"you had to come over today? you didnt even tell me."
"i like seeing tsukishima kei in his natural habitat"
you pulled a book out of your bag, one that you and tsukishima read together often and he pulled you into his lap and opened to where you had last read
the orange rays of the sun filled his room as you two read the book, soon falling asleep in each others presence
Kageyama
Tumblr media
constantly everyday, this boy was trying to find a way to let you into his life or show his appreciation with more than just holding your hand
one day you guys were chilling on the grass infront of his home, his mothers music playing through the living room window, loud enough for you to hear
the sun was starting to set and a slightly blue hue painted the surroundings
"hey, do you dance?"
you were a bit shocked by that question since you were usually the one to ask random questions like that
"im not that good at it but sure, why?"
kageyama stood up and held out his hand
"may i have this dance?"
you laughed at his question and took his hand, pulling yourself up
"yes you may~"
kageyamas hand rested on your hip, your hand on his shoulder and your other hands were connected at your sides
you guys slow danced, mimicking a waltz, stepping on each others shoes occasionally
kageyamas cheeks were red the whole time as he twirled you and connected his hands with both of yours
he pressed a quick kiss to your cheek and you stared up in awe as your boyfriend shot a wide smile at you, one that you havent seen before
"y-your smiling!"
"w-what?"
"what did you do to kageyama!"
"i am kageyama!"
Yamaguchi
Tumblr media
you and yamaguchi loved to be together, bestfriends and lovers, tsukishima falling victim to third wheeling, not as if he cared much tho
yamaguchi loves flowers almost as much as you do, so when he found this small flower field a few miles past his house he knew he had to take you there
you and yamaguchi walked hand snd hand to this "surprise" place he wanted you to see
when you were close, he covered your eyes and led you past the trees and rocks, placing you in the middle of the large flower field
"ready annnnndd.. open!"
you opened your eyes and froze in awe at the colorful flowers that dotted the field
you turned to your boyfriend and wrapped your arms around his neck, tackling him to the floor
"I LOVE YOU SO MUCH TADASHI!"
he winced softly as you whispered apologized and peppered his cheek in kisses and he just laughed
"I love you too y/n"
he turned to his side and plucked a daisy, smiling softly as he turned back to face you
he pushed some hair back behind your ear and placed the flower behind your ear, smiling widely as his cheeks turned a slight shade of pink
"i think you're the prettiest flower in the WHOOOOLE world!"
he placed soft kisses to your lips as you laid in the middle of the flower field

Happy Birthday Noya
- Yu Nishinoya x fem reader, no warnings, fluffy and cute! Small references to making babies but nothing detailed, enjoy!
———————
“Noya?” You said tugging on the older boy’s shirt.
“Yeah y/n?”
“Do you really mean it? Like, pinky promise mean it?” He laughed and ruffled your hair.
“Of course I mean it! I’ll marry you when we’re all grown up and we’ll have a proper family together. We’ll have a big house and loads of animals and we can travel together and laugh and dance all the time!” He clasped your smaller hands in his and locked your gaze. His eyes sparkled and your heart sped up in your chest.
“I’ll be with you forever y/n!”
———————
That was ten years ago now and you hadn’t spoken to the libero in almost three years. He was a year your senior in school, and when he’d moved from junior high to high school his devotion to volleyball and his beloved Kiyoko drew his attention away from you for long enough that you just dissolved from his view. You weren’t close anymore, and he’d stopped proposing marriage to you when he’d turned twelve and learnt how babies were made, suddenly the promise of having children with you one day was a bit too much for his brain to handle. You’d promised yourself that you would move on too like he had, but no one could ever hold a candle to your Noya.
“Y/n!” Your best friend Yachi was waving her hand in your face as you gazed out of the window in a day dream. You were abruptly brought back to reality as she giggled softly.
“God you are all over the place today! What’s up?” She seemed concerned but masked it with a friendly smile.
“Nothing really, it’s just...” you sighed placing your chin in your hand and leaning on the table in front of you.
“I didn’t realise Nishinoya’s birthday affected you this much y/n.” Just hearing his name sent tears to your eyes, and you tried to blink them away before Yachi saw but it was no use.
“Oh y/n, you really miss him don’t you?” That’s all it took for you to break down at your desk. You really did miss that boy. Yachi pulled you to the girls toilet by your classroom and helped wipe your tears away and blot away the redness from your cheeks. You were thankful to have her in your life. She was the only one who knew about your past with him and the only one who’d you’d felt comfortable enough with to confide in about your love for Noya.
“You could always come to practise tonight and see him again?” She kept trying to get you to go to practise with her after school ever since she became the club manager. You’d met some of the first years, namely Kageyama and Hinata, but you would just feel way too awkward.
“No that’s such a bad idea. One, I have no reason to be there, and two he wouldn’t even remember me.” She scoffed at you and rolled her eyes.
“I can say you’re waiting for me because we have a project or we’re walking home together, and he’ll totally remember you. You’re gonna get married remember?” She teased, poking you in the sides until you let a giggle escape your lips. You tried pushing her hands away but it was no use, she’d gotten you to laugh so loudly that a teacher had to come in and tell you two to shut it and get back to class. You did as you were told, and both hurried back to class, but not before Yachi got you to promise to go to practise with her after school.
———————
You knew this was a bad idea, and that was only reinforced when Yachi pulled you into the gym and had all the players greet you. You smiled and said hi back but it was obvious you were uncomfortable. In the end though they didn’t even ask why you were there and the coach didn’t seem to mind so you just took a seat on the edge of the bench and watched.
You couldn’t bring yourself to look at Noya, you hadn’t even been able to say hi to him when you’d walked in behind Yachi, not that he’d even came over to say hi anyway. You were fiddling with your hands when you heard a familiar voice shouting your name.
“Y/n! Hey!” You looked to see Hinata waving at you as he rushed in late to practise.
“What are you doing here?” He offered you a smile and you gave him one right back.
“O-oh, I’m just waiting for Yachi. I’m staying at hers tonight.” He nodded and waved to Yachi.
“That’s cool! You said hey to Noya yet? I’m sure-“ He was interrupted by a volleyball to the back of the head and an icy glare from Asahi, silently telling him to back off. You went a little pale when he said Noya’s name but tried to act as calmly as possible. He ran off, throwing an apology Noya’s way and just shrugged at Kageyama when he asked him how he was so stupid. Yachi nudged you and smiled.
“Nishinoya is blushing right now.” You dared a peak over at the boy and sure enough he was. Kiyoko was slightly giggling beside you and there was an air of nervousness flowing through the boys. You felt as though just being there was making things way too tense, so you made an excuse and left despite Yachi begging you not to.
Stepping outside into the cold fresh air of October was relaxing. You’d always liked the colder months, being able to wrap yourself in layer upon layer. It was also an excuse to bring out the old scarf Noya gave you as a present when you two were younger.
“You still have that old thing?”
You were frozen in place, your hand reaching up to the scarf around your neck.
“Wow, I’m impressed. Thought you would have thrown that out years ago.” He chuckled next to you, the sound sending you hurtling back to your childhood together.
“Hey Noya.” It came out as barely a whisper, but he heard you.
“Been a while, hasn’t it?” He was fidgeting next to you, obviously uncomfortable with your presence.
“Look I’m so sorry for coming I-“ you stopped talking when you turned to face him and saw the rosey blush dusting his cheeks and the smile playing on his lips.
“Happy birthday.” He looked startled for a second, but his eyes softened into your gaze.
“You remembered?” Nodding eagerly you smiled back at him.
“I always remember, every year.” He let out a sigh and dropped his gaze to the ground, kicking up a small cloud of dust.
“I’m really sorry for disappearing on you y/n. I shouldn’t have left you like that.”
“Oh, thanks. I mean, you were growing up and needed space. I get that.”
“But I didn’t want space from you. I still don’t. I just thought...” he sighed and kicked the ground again, his voice shaken.
“I thought you’d be happier with your friends in your own year. That I wasn’t fun for you anymore, that you didn’t enjoy my company.” In that moment you realised he hadn’t dropped you because he’d moved on, but the opposite. He’d felt that he wasn’t good enough for you.
“Noya.” Your voice was louder this time, but soft and warm. He raised his eyes back up to meet yours. The soft hazel seemingly melting under your gaze.
“How could I hate the company of the man I’m gonna marry?” You smiled at this, a playful lilt in your words. He blushed at you and a smile broke out across his whole face.
“To be honest y/n, when I found out how babies were made I kind of freaked out.” He playfully joked back, but there was a sense of vulnerability to him.
“Oh god, don’t remind me! When I found out my dad wouldn’t stop going on about how ‘Noya will never do that to his baby girl’” you laughed placing a hand on his arm for support. This was nice.
“Your dad actually asked me to stop talking about marrying you, you know? Said I was gonna stop you from living your life.” Your laughter stopped and you looked up at the libero. “He said I wouldn’t let you meet new people if I kept telling you that we were gonna get married, that you would get too attached and wouldn’t make choices for yourself.”
“He what?” Your voice was harsher now, the anger prevalent in your tone.
“He was just trying to protect you y/n, that’s all.” He raised an eyebrow at your sudden outburst and you felt silly all of a sudden.
“But, if he hadn’t of told me to back off, I’m sure I would have brought you a ring by now.” This caught you totally off guard. Noya had always joked about buying you an engagement ring, but the way he was saying it now you could tell there was no way he was joking.
“I really miss you y/n. I’m still up for marrying you, if youll have me?” You blinked at him, his cheeks now burning red and his ears turning a deep shade of pink. This was really happening.
You let out a soft hum and pretended to be lost in thought for a moment before placing a swift kiss on his cheek. His hand flew up to the spot and he stared at you with a mix of bewilderment and pure joy.
“Maybe we should go on a date first before we start picking out the baby names?” He smiled at this and wrapped an arm around your waist, pulling you close to him.
“I’m so okay with that y/n.” He leant in, his nose brushing against yours, silently asking for your permission. You nodded and his lips met yours. He was much softer and calmer than you’d imagined, but it still set fireworks off in your brain. He pulled back after a few moments, his smile wide and eyes sparkling like they did all those years ago.
“You promise you want me? Like pinky promise mean it?” He pulled you impossibly closer to his chest and kissed you again, and that’s exactly the response you needed to calm your nerves.

OiHina Headcanons #1
Some Brazil/TimeSkip OiHina headcanons that became a little bit of a fic, I'm not sorry:
Oikawa is definitely already operating a what happens in Brazil stays in Brazil mentality before he even runs into Hinata again.
The first time Oikawa sees the tangerine he's playing beach volleyball as Oikawa and the rest of his team take a well earned day off.
Oikawa wouldn't be sure it even was Hinata if not for the way he still managed those freakish jumps on soft sand.
However the first time he speaks to Hinata the two are in a club, both celebrating different things, a few days later.
Hinata spots Oikawa and beams, grabbing a second drink and taking it over to him.
Hinata starts recalling all the things that happened in high school, what he'd learnt and continued to learn, even mentioned a few things about Iwaizumi.
Oikawa smiled, drinking in the praise and the alcohol. And really who gave Hinata the right to look so damn precious.
The first night both are adamant that it's a one night thing, they both have people waiting on them in Japan of course. But they don't lose contact.
Hinata somehow worms his way into the hearts of Oikawa's team and therefore their practices. He claims as much as he loves beach volleyball and how much he's learning from it, he misses the solidity of the court beneath his feet.
Soon enough Hinata starts joining in Oikawa's practice and vice versa, both picking up skills that are beneficial to each of them.
It becomes more at some point, the two start hanging out, showing each other their favourite cafes, shops and parks. Hinata talks about everything and anything, he actually keeps up with everyone back in Japan so Oikawa knows that Iwaizumi is coaching, Kageyama is still playing competitively, Kenma is a very successful gamer.
Oikawa also knows that the Karasuno coach and teacher supervisor got married. Hinata very quickly shut his mouth, covering it and blushing wildly trying to back track. Oikawa laughed and said it didn't bother him, he wouldn't tell, but was also trying to conceal his staring at the flustered boy.
The second time it happened they were both drunk, both sad and both missing their exes. It hadn't been like that first night where the adrenaline and surprise had ruled. This one had be slower, softer, closer. Both of them desperately trying to replace something they hadn't quite lost.
Hinata stays. He sleeps on the sofa, but he stays. He makes Oikawa breakfast in the morning, cup of coffee in hand, saying they needed to talk about this and where it was going.
'I like you, Oikawa. I just need to know whether this is just going to be a thing or not?'
‘I think it could be a thing. A friends with benefits kind of situation, right?’
'Ok, from now until I leave.'
That was another thing. Hinata would be leaving. Oikawa knew he wouldn't stay forever, part of staying in Brazil was to try and find himself outside of his past. He never expected Hinata would stick around. He never expected himself to want Hinata to stick around.
They work out they have around a month and a half before Hinata heads back to Japan and they make the most of it. Sure there's a lot of fooling around, but the pair seem to take the friends part seriously too.
Hinata reveals how scared he'd been of everything in high school. Feeling like the whole team relied on him. Sure he'd built himself up to be like the Little Giant but the pressure that came with it often tried to drown him.
Oikawa admitted the problems he'd had. The reason he'd nearly punched Kageyama in middle school. The stupid knee injury that he still tests the limits of. The panic attacks that still hit him out of nowhere.
By the time Hinata has to return, neither one really want him to leave. Oikawa reminds him it was always supposed to be temporary, Hinata likes to say the friends part will always be permanent.
Neither admit it but they both cry at the airport as Oikawa sends Hinata off with a soft forehead kiss and tight hug.
Time passes, Oikawa is selected for the Argentinian national team. Iwaizumi begs him to come home, but Oikawa isn't finished.
They stop talking for a while, but Hinata fills the space with random anecdotes about his new teammates, about how Kageyama is suffering on the same team as Ushijima. And, when Hinata knows Oikawa is in a good enough mood, updates on Iwaizumi.
There's one day, in a cold November, that Hinata facetimes Oikawa at an unreasonable hour in Japan. Oikawa's just on his way to practice but he accepts the call.
'Why are you awake?'
'I needed to make sure you'd be with people. It's about practice time in Argentina right?'
Oikawa is shocked that Hinata even remembers, and then he realises.
'What do you mean with people?'
'Well, Kags and I made the Japan national team. We also broke up so things haven't been so great.'
'Ok, that's fantastic about making the team though. Can't wait to kick your ass at the olympics.'
Hinata laughs: 'yeah.'
'What?'
'Well, we had our team dinner where we met our coach and his fiancee...it's Iwaizumi-san.'
Oikawa hung up. Tears brimming in his eyes. Hinata was the one to tell him Iwaizumi was engaged. He broke. Didn't show up at practice, claimed mild food poisoning. He just needed a day.
Of course Oikawa didn't really expect Iwa-chan to wait for him forever. They hadn't spoken in a year or so, but he thought Iwaizumi would have told him about his engagement at least.
He shoots off a blunt 'Congratulations' text. Quickly followed by an 'I'll be ok' text to Hinata.
Oikawa really tries to put the engagement out of his mind but the Olympics roll around and of course the first person he bumps into is Iwaizumi.
'I hope you'll be very happy together.'
It's all he says, it's all he allows before running to find his original destination.
Hinata opens the door to a red faced, puffy cheeked Oikawa who's trying his best not to fall apart in the corridor.
They don't talk, Hinata just holds Oikawa close, being the big spoon until he falls asleep. Iwaizumi knocks once, but the cursing out Hinata gives him is enough to scare him away. Hinata may like his coach enough but he liked Oikawa more, he was the priority right now.
Oikawa woke up to Hinata scrolling through his phone, he peeps at the screen seeing pictures of Hinata and Kageyama, obviously taken when they were a couple.
'I was so stupid to think it'd be the same once I came back.'
'We both were. I'm stupider, cause I thought he'd wait forever.'
'Do you still love him?'
'Not like I did, doesn't make it hurt less though. Do you still love Kageyama?'
'I don't think I did before I even arrived back in Japan.'
That was a loaded sentence. Oikawa sat up straight, searching Hinata's face for any kind of sign.
'Once more for old times sake?'
'Does it have to be only once? I'd like to do it a lot, and all the other things that come with it. Like dating, yeah, that, um cuddles too I guess...' Hinata was losing it, Oikawa noted down that he would have to keep making the younger boy flustered.
'I would like that too.'
'Shōyō.'
'Tōru.'
Hinata nodded. They both laugh awkwardly before Oikawa leaves for his actual room, promising to meet him back on the court.
When Japan wins their match Oikawa rushes Hinata, kissing him square on the lips in congratulations. Kageyama frowns as Iwaizumi leads him away from punching Oikawa square in the jaw.
Oikawa moves back to Japan for Hinata. Which says something. He didn't ever think of moving back specifically for Iwaizumi. It's coupled with him retiring from volleyball finally. His knee was really starting to give him trouble a lot more often, much to Hinata's frustration.
Hinata continues playing, and Oikawa finds a job in the fashion industry. As much as he'd liked to have been a model he finds that working as a photoshoot stylist has it's benefits. One of them being seeing a few old friends of his.
The main benefit of course is having time for a relationship. Hinata and he get their own apartment together a year into dating, and it's cosy and homely and everything Oikawa had always wanted. It's warm.
Oikawa did most of the decorating, even though Hinata definitely sneaks a few volleyball posters in. He also snuck in a framed collage of Oikawa's first ever shoot he styled solo. Oikawa announced he loved him that day.
Hinata said I love you first the day that Oikawa announced he was retiring. He'd say he just wanted Oikawa to know, that he didn't expect him to say it back, but Oikawa knew Hinata had been in love with him since Brazil, a part of Oikawa had been in love with Hinata then too.
Oikawa proposes. Much like their first kiss at the Olympics, its four years into their relationship. They'd been speaking about it. Hinata was talking about finally retiring and it was his last competitive match.
His team had won and as their friends and family swarmed the court Oikawa blended in, reaching Hinata and sliding down onto one knee. It was a private moment just for them, the team hiding them from the crowd.
Of course Hinata said yes.
I might do a part two to this of OiHina and their disgustingly domestic married life, haven’t quite decided.

FALLING IN LOVE W HAIKYUU BOYS TO TAYLOR SWIFT SONGS
pairing: various x reader
word count: 800+ words, fluff.
summary: what falling in love feels like with them and the kind of lovers they are based on taylor swift songs that i think fit them
a/n: so taylor swift released the new version of love story and can i just say i am IN LOVE with it. and i somehow got inspired to revisit her old songs and thought of some hq characters that suit the songs :D ig this is a result of my swiftie brainrot so here ya go, happy valentines!
Tumblr media
OUR SONG – nishinoya, ATSUMU, hinata, HOSHIUMI, tanaka, KOGANEGAWA
Experiencing love with them is like opening a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get. There are no dull moments when they’re around; their surprises keeping your relationship alive and exciting. Arcade dates, impromptu midnight drives, shopping dates where you and him fill the aisles with boisterous laughter and looking all loved up, gathering the attention of jealous singles who wish they have what both of you share. Ultimately, they love like there’s no tomorrow; their affection all-consuming and making you feel like you’ve lucked out in life.
LOVE STORY – YAMAGUCHI, kita, OSAMU, ennoshita, DAICHI
They give you love that makes you believe that fairytale endings and happy every afters do exist. Maybe the two of you fall in love at first sight, catching each other’s eyes from across the room, and the rest is history. Each moment spent with them feels like a dream come true. Heartfelt words and affecting actions define your relationship, putting to shame every couple that existed in romance novels and movies. As lovers, they are faithful and passionate, and there’s no one else you’d want to grow old together with than them.
YOU BELONG WITH ME – BOKUTO, lev, GOSHIKI, komori, HANAMAKI, yaku
It’s a kind of love where both of you bring out the best in each other. You’ve been together since childhood, having seen one another in their best and worst days, yet the two of you still stick by one’s sides. Everyone – from your parents, friends, and even the neighbors – sees how well you two complement each other; and there’s really no one else who knows you better than them. They know how to calm the raging storm in your heart on your bad days, how you like your coffee in the mornings, or even how you’d like to be proposed to when that fateful moment comes and he’s ready to go down on one knee and ask that you spend the rest of lifetime together.
SPARKS FLY – KUROO, terushima, SUGAWARA, futakuchi, KONOHA, matsukawa
You think he’s on a league above your own, but when the two of you cross paths, the unexpected happens: you instantly hit it off. He comes off strong, a force you think you can’t reckon with, but to you, in secret, he brings down his guards and shows his true self – his troubles, desires, and ambitions that he believes only you can answer. It’s in the little things that you both realize your intense longing for one another: the staying up all night talking on the phone (not caring whether you’d wake up with eyebags), the intense lingering gazes exchanged from afar, brief kisses in secret hallways, and the subtle yet electrifying touches that make you feel hot and alive. It’s a love that you’re proud of, the kind that you’d want to showcase to the whole world.
CRUEL SUMMER - IWAIZUMI, kyotani, SUNA, kageyama, KUNIMI
You meet at a time when you needed each other the most. It was early midnight and you were the only two people left in the diner when he scoots in your booth, with his blinding smile and eyes that spelled trouble. Feeling bold and confident, he took your hand for a midnight rendezvous and before you knew it, you found yourself falling for him hook, line, and sinker. He teaches you how to be free, you teach him what’s it like to love. It’s a relationship where you’re both unsure but you’re exploring new territories and experiencing firsts together. He bathes you in a love that makes you crave for more. And though it doesn’t last as long as you hoped it would be, he leaves you a sweet aftertaste that lingers even long after you’ve separated.
MINE - TSUKISHIMA, tendou, SEMI, kenma, DAISHO
Romance was something you already crossed off in your life. You’ve seen people close to you get hurt, lose themselves, and cry their hearts out over someone. It was something you never wanted to experience until he came along. Like a knight in shining armor, he enters your life at the right time when you needed someone’s steady support the most. Along with his arrival, comfort and peace of mind comes to you. His love saves you, heals you, and puts back the broken pieces of your life together. He shows you what it is like to trust and give your whole heart to someone without fear of having it shattered into pieces. Most of all, you’ve find someone that you can now call your new home.
LOVER - AKAASHI, asahi, SAKUSA, ushijima, ARAN
Being in love with them is one of best things in the world. It’s the kind that makes you believe that soulmates do exist. As soon as your eyes land on them, it feels like you’ve known them your whole life and your breath is knocked out of your lungs as suddenly the world around you is painted in vibrant colors. You instantly feel connected to them, your soul attached to theirs in a way you couldn’t describe. You find yourself falling head over heels for them in everything they do, even in complete utter moments of silence where it’s just you and him in the comfort of your shared home. Simple post-it notes scattered all over apartment, the never-ending love confessions making you feel complete, whole, and reassured. Promise rings are exchanged as symbol of undying commitment; and sooner or later, these are traded for bands worn on your ring finger, signifying the gift of a lifetime together.

The Proposal + The Party (wip) + First Kiss (wip)
Tsukkiyama ATLA AU
I’m really proud of some of my improvements these last few months! This AU has been bouncing around in my head for ages haha so I’m slowly drawing out the story. Maybe one day I’ll properly write it! Also ik it’s unlikely for an air representative to have such fancy clothes but idc yams in flowly robes gives me life uwu also most air nomads have shaved heads but since Tadashi came from the water tribe he wouldn’t be expected to shave it until receiving his airbending mastery tattoos, which he will never receive bc he eventually defects and runs away with Kei before finishing his training. Anywho read on for more details on each piece, tho two are still in progress felt like it would be fun to post some together. Also there is a specific reason why Tsukki carved yams a betrothal necklace and not vice versa
This AU starts in Avatar Roku’s time around 20/25 years before the air nomad genocide. Tadashi and Kei were both born in the Northern Water Tribe and were childhood friends. Kei comes from a very prestigious noble water bending family, a very recognizable one at that with very uncharacteristic fair white or blond hair as a result of a strong spiritual connection central ancestors had, in addition many members are predisposed to having a powerful bond with the moon. They are a very small clan, but very powerful, and they are often found in important occupations like taking care of the spirit oasis. Akiteru is the heir to most of the family’s titles, giving Kei decent leeway to do what he wants, though there are still many expectations as a member of such a traditional clan. He will be expected to be highly educated on local and global affairs and expected to partake in a politically beneficial arranged marriage later in life as is customary in the northern tribe.
Tadashi on the other hand is an only child of a small family of no import. His mother and father ended up working for the Tsukishimas so he was around the place a lot, and being the same age meant the two became fast friends around the age of 7. Tadashi’s earnest goodnatured attitude was a candle to Kei’s more icy exterior. They become really close friends, both pariahs in their own right. Kei could be popular on his family name and his burgeoning waterbending talent, but his rude attitude and disdain for expectations make him disliked but grudgingly respected. Tadashi is derided for his lack of bending and lack of status. Before befriending Tsukki he was often picked on. Finding comfort and understanding in their odd symbiosis, they lived in their own little world.
A huge shock came to their friendship when they were 12, Tadashi discovering his airbending abilities. Turns out his mother was once an air nomad, born and raised, but with fairly weak bending abilities, thus never receiving mastery tattoos, who choose to abandon that life when she fell in love with a water tribe man when a journey threw her off course. Because marrying across nations is very uncommon and slightly stigmatized, especially during the tumultuous decade before the start of the Hundred Years’ War that marked increased division. Thus Tadashi’s mother completely abandoned her old identity in order to fully assimilate into the culture of the Northern Water Tribe and never mentioned it to her son in order to protect him from any additional scorn of being the result of a internation couple. Since her airbending abilities were so weak and her husband was a non bender she figured it would never be important.
Quite a shock when Tadashi’s abilities suddenly bloom at 12, fairly late for bending to manifest but likely a result of not growing up amidst the spirituality of air nomad culture that is so essential to airbending practices. Some sort of minor public spectatcle occurs due to Tadashi’s uncontrolled new abilities, leading to the tribe’s leadership demanding he be sent to the northern air temple to become an air bender. Another result of expectations for a harsh division between nations due to the polarization of the Fire Nation’s aggressive actions leading up to the hundred year war. Kei is upset because his only true friend is leaving and does what he does best and decides to get icy and push him away. Tadashi is terrified to leave behind the only culture and family he has ever known to go to a completely new place, and he is hurt. They leave on these complicated feelings. Kei continues his waterbending training and his studies full force to avoid his feelings, and a complex relationship with his brother and family further drive him to avoid expanding his social circle as expectations loom. Tadashi travels to the air temple and is very nervous about the whole thing. Determined to move on and make the best of things, Tadashi is pleasantly suprised by the fun loving nature of the air nomads. He quickly bonds to his mentor Shimada, and becomes fast friends with fellow new air apprentices, Hinata from the Fire Nation and Yachi from the Earth Kingdom, who also discovered a hidden nomad heritage when their bending abilities bloomed. Tadashi trains, and while he is no bending genius he works hard to improve. He pays particular attention to his studies and this makes him a prime candidate for later diplomatic missions as tensions worsen between the four nations.
The Party:
This is the earliest chronologically, basically representing the first meeting Yamaguchi and Tsukishima have after many years apart. After 6 long years Kei and Tadashi meet again when a diplomatic convoy of air nomads is sent to the Northern Tribe. There is a big party with diplomats from each nation. This is about 7 years before the start of the war. The fire nation is there on formality and treated with the most distrust while the other three nations are fairly friendly and willing to let loose with each other. (The fire nation convoy will consist of some other characters, possibly Kageyama and Oikawa? Still working that out) I’m thinking that Asahi and Daichi might be an earth kingdom princes with bodyguards Noya and Tanaka, who become good friends with waterbender Suga. The diplomatic trip is meant to last around 8 months. Anyway this drawing is meant to represent Yamaguchi and Tsukishima’s first meeting at 18 after so many years. Fancy clothes, endless formalities, both considering the other insanely attractive... and they are both drawn in by each other’s familiarity and confidence. This is the first spark of something new between the witty remarks and coy glances. They have no clue what hit them.
First Kiss
Jumping ahead of a lot of yearning... I mean truly a ridiculous amount of dancing around each other for maybe 3 months they finally kiss. Complicated by the impending arrangement of Tsukishima’s marriage to another prestigious young waterbender, Kiyoko, who Tsukishima greatly respects but is in no way attracted to. They keep their blooming romance a passionate secret to prevent political disaster for the nomads and Tsukki’s family. It’s really hard for them to keep their hands off of each other and there are plenty of close calls. There is some jealousy on both sides due to the uncertainties of their relationship. Yamaguchi discovers a betrothal necklace Kei is carving and is painfully reminded of the marriage expectation. Luckily both make strong connections to new friends and slowly their relationship becomes known to this close circle. For a bit they worry about what would happen if Kiyoko finds out, but later they discover her affair with the earth kingdom bodyguard Tanaka so she gets it.
The Proposal
wrote this out and then tumblr didn’t save it so y’all get the quick version bc it is almost 7 am and no I have not slept. Now they are in the Northern Air temple for the tail end of the diplomatic mission. Kei carved the necklace for Yamaguchi, not Kiyoko as he had assumed. In a secluded garden on the island Kei proposes to Yamaguchi with the betrothal necklace. Though made for and worn by women, their relationship already defied infinite traditions and Kei knew how much it would mean for Tadashi to have their relationship carved into stone. They agree to run away to be together after wrapping up the diplomatic mission. Then more stuff happens I have not gotten to yet lol. There will def be a lot of side ships. If anyone has any ideas for side ship plot lines def come chat! I’d love to hear if ppl like this AU idea

Note
Hello ! Headcanons marriage to Kageyama, Daichi, Kuroo, Akaashi and Ushijima. Thank you .
I’ve already actually written something super similar for Daichi and Ushiwaka, it’s here! I’m gonna format these the same way.
-
KAGEYAMA
Kageyama will definitely be focusing most of his energy and attention on volleyball, so dating and marriage is not really high on his priority list. He probably won’t actively pursue a relationship, so his relationship with you would have come about very naturally.
When he’s finally at the point where he wants to propose to you, he’s nervous as heck. He knows he’s not very good at vocalizing his love for you and he tends to show it in other ways, but he knows that to ask you to marry him, he’s going to need some kind of speech and he lowkey freaks out about that and so he puts it off even longer, carrying the ring around with him everywhere hoping something comes to him eventually.
In the end he asks you out of the blue, just blurts it out, and he tells you in his own way that he loves you and doesn’t want to know what his life would be like without you in it. After you say yes, he just holds you for a long time, burying his face in your neck and murmuring over and over how much he loves you.
He really wants to help you and contribute to the wedding planning, but he doesn’t know the first thing about what’s involved, so in the end you do most of the work - he feels bad, but you don’t mind.
The day of, he gets a tiny case of cold feet just because he is still having a little trouble believing that this is real and you actually want to spend the rest of your life with him because the rest of your lives is a really long time and- basically Hinata shakes him really hard and then he’s good.
It all completely dissolves when he sees you, and how genuinely happy you look, and his eyes prickle just a little bit. He’s actually full on smiling. Your first kiss as a married couple is incredibly sweet and you can just feel every single emotion behind it.
Married life with him is pretty routine without a lot of surprises. You do have to spend some time apart, which is only natural with his volleyball career, but he is determined to make time for you every day even if it is only a facetime call.
A lot of your time together is spent at home, just being together and relaxing. You have little date nights where you make dinner together, or bake something together, and it’s just very lowkey and nice.
I can honestly see it going either way on whether you have kids. It would probably be something he’d sort of follow your lead on, and definitely something that would happen a bit later into the marriage, if it does.
Overall, you’re just his person, and he never feels quite as at ease or comfortable with anyone else like he does with you.
KUROO
He probably meets you in college, and the two of you are friends for a while before the relationship changes to become something more. He doesn’t go out seeking a serious relationship, but after he meets you, he started seeing marriage differently.
When he proposes, he takes you to the place where you had your first real date, and sort of subtly goes back over the entire course of your friendship and relationship through conversation, until he’s on one knee and you realize what’s happening. The moment you say yes he has you lifted off your feet and spins you around because he’s just so happy.
He has some... interesting ideas for the wedding. They’re not all bad, though, and you actually end up with some really creative things incorporated.
He’s really adamant about writing your own vows, because everything that’s already written just feels so formal and stilted and eugh.
He regrets it the moment you’re standing across from him looking absolutely breathtaking and his brain forgets what words even are for half a second.
Luckily he wrote a lot down and has it with him. The two of you read the vows you wrote and everyone in attendance agrees that it was simultaneously the sweetest and most cringey thing they ever witnessed.
Being married to Kuroo is just fun. I don’t mean that in the sense that it’s full of excitement (though there definitely is excitement), I just mean that things never feel monotonous or boring, even when the day to day stuff starts to get mundane.
It’s like a never-ending sleepover with your best friend, only better.
He isn’t too sure about kids, not that he doesn’t want them but he just isn’t sure what to expect or if he’s the right person to be a dad.
BUT when/if you have kids, he does a 180 so quick, like he’s 100% smitten with this little tiny baby, he didn’t even know that this kind of love existed until now.
He is the embarrassing dad who completely embraces the art of the dad joke and says “Ah, youth” unironically.
I’m biased, but being married to Kuroo is just so nice. The two of you make the perfect team.
AKAASHI
I can see your relationship being one of his first, he doesn’t jump into a relationship quickly and so he already knows how special you are to him by the time it becomes official.
He kind of knows he wants to marry you for a while, but he doesn’t buy the ring until things are more stable and you’re both ready for a huge commitment like this.
His proposal is the super traditional one, he takes you to a very nice dinner and then gets down on one knee. He doesn’t have a long speech or anything but the words he does say come straight from his heart, and there are tears in his eyes.
His focus is on making preparations for your life together while you prepare for the wedding, so by the time the wedding comes around everything is all lined up. The two of you work together like a well-oiled machine.
He doesn’t get cold feet on the wedding day at all, he knows without a shadow of a doubt that this is where he’s meant to be. He’s excited, of course, but more so it’s just a feeling of warm contentment. Having you next to him just feels like the way it should be.
You both slip into married life easily. Whatever comes up, you approach it together, and you do most things together, from grocery shopping to cleaning. Communication is so great in your relationship, you don’t have any secrets from each other.
He knows he wants one or two kids, but the timeline will depend on both of your lives. You both just kind of know when you’re ready.
He’s a great dad. He’s very big on teaching your kids a lot of the basic life skills they’ll need to know. He’s kind but firm, and often he ends up having to be the bad cop to your good cop.
Your marriage is just so smooth, I don’t know how else to describe it. The two of you exist seamlessly together.

i just wanted to thank all of y'all for nearly 100 followers and i'll probably do something special for it (maybe a Q&A? idk come up with something dw)
school is dumb and i hate it here stressing about college applications is also wack
i've always wanted to try my hand at the fluff alphabet so i hope this isn't too ooc or bad
Tumblr media
kageyama tobio A-Z fluff alphabet
[a]ctivities: what do they like to do with their s/o? how do they spend their free time with them?
kageyama would absolutely love love love to play volleyball with you. it doesn't matter if you're a professional or don't know what a recieve is, if you show interest in playing it with him he will be just so over joyed (of course without showing it very much)
his favorite thing to do with you that's not volleyball is going out for hikes or walks in the park. just being able to go outside and enjoy the weather is a good stress reliever for him. you two don't even have to talk very much. if you want to ramble about your day or about the latest tv show you've watched, he's gonna listen but if you want to just be together and walk in silence he's totally down for that too.
[b]eauty: what do they admire about their s/o? what do they think is beautiful about them?
one physical trait kageyama likes is your voice. he would love your voice no matter what. if you're one to talk about anything and everything he is low-key relieved because he cannot carry a conversation for the life of him but if you prefer a comfortable silence he's down for that too.
a personality traits he admires is patience. he knows he isn't the sharpest tool in the shed and isn't one to pick up hints easily. so if you bare with him and help him maneuver through life and its obstacles he will definitely fall harder for you
[c]omfort: how would they help their s/o when they feel down/have a panic attack etc.?
to be honest, I can see Kageyama not knowing what to do the first time his s/o has a panic attack or feels awful. he's just very inexperienced with relationships in general, but he's gonna try to do some research and ask his upper classmen teammates for help. the second time it happens he'll be there for you. he is gonna provide all the physical and emotional support that he can.
[d]reams: how do they picture their future with their s/o?
once he has a stable schedule, kageyama sees the two of you living in a large condo home living the domestic life. making breakfast together on days that the two of you have off, movie nights with popcorn and tea, doing cosmetic face masks together (despite Kageyama having the clearest skin known to mankind), and just being able to take the time to cherish one another.
[e]qual: are they the dominant one in the relationship, or rather passive?
at the beginning of the relationship Kageyama's gonna be more passive just because he a) doesn't want to accidently hurt you and b) he does not have the slightest clue what to do in a relationship. as the relationship goes on he's gonna be a little bit more dominant, but he will always ask to do something (like ask to give you a hug or for kisses etc. because he is a polite boy 😤)
[f]ight: would they be easy to forgive their s/o?
it honestly depends on what the who's at fault. if you're clearly at fault kageyama is gonna expect you to apologize and own up to it, but if he's the one at fault he will apologize as soon as he realizes it. he doesn't want to lose you in some dumb argument so he'll quickly and sincerely apologize, though it might take just a little bit of time for him to realize.
[g]ratitude: how grateful are they in general? are they aware of what their s/o is doing for them?
kageyama is super duper duper grateful for all that you do for him. waiting for him to come home at night with late practices, him leaving at dawn for early practice, all of it. he doesn't know how to verbally say "thank you so much for all that you do I don't know where I'd be without you" but he'll show it through actions. he's gonna get you a cute little trinket he sees at the airport when he's away or gets you that thing you've been looking at for some time without you realizing.
[h]onesty: do they have secrets they hide from their s/o? or do they share everything?
Kageyama doesn't share too much, only if you ask. he's not very good at opening up and he's very scared of abandonment. just be patient with him and let him open up at his own pace. he'll tell you everything just not at all once
[i]nspiration: did their s/o change them somehow, or the other way around? like trying out new things or help them overcome their personal problems?
he's become more aware of how to talk to people and the general aura he gives off. he’s learned to be vulnerable around you, to lean on you, and love you. it scares him that on any day you could pack your bags and leave him, never looking back. he’s scared of making mistakes and ultimately destroying the most wonderful thing that the two of you have so sometimes he overthinks every action. you’ve taught him to go with the flow, that it is okay to mess up. mistakes happen and that is okay. you’ve soothed and ease the insectuities that kageyama has. he can’t thank you with words because he’ll stumble and stutter but he can thank you with a gentle hand squeeze and a hug that conveys “I don’t ever want to let you go”
[j]ealousy: do they get jealous easily? how do they deal with it?
again, baby boy kags has abandonment issues from Junior high so he's gonna be at least a little bit jealous, but not to worry! he trusts you 100 percent to make the right choices and to be loyal. he wouldn't really get that jealous unless someone was blatantly flirting with you. you notice his jealousy when he gives off the iciest glare to whoever is flirting with you. unless you look visibly uncomfortable he won't step in since he knows you can handle yourself. but if you needed him to step in, he would in a heartbeat. he deals with his jealousy by pouting at you and glaring at the other person until you give him all the affection he wants.
[k]iss: are they a good kisser? what was the first kiss like?
there is a 100 percent high chance that Kageyama has never been in a relationship before, let alone kissed someone. he's gonna be very inexperienced so if you take the lead until Kageyama feels more comfortable with it he'll be grateful. but fyi this boy learns and he learns fast don't worry ;)
your first kiss was an accident (i know cliché but hear me out). the two of you were sitting together shoulder to shoulder studying for midterms. you were aiming to give kageyama a kiss on the cheek for getting a question correct on his literature homework, but he moved his head towards you to ask you something about a certain kanji character and bam. that was your first kiss.
[l]ove confession: how would they confess to their s/o?
kageyama would do the cliché "stick a note in your locker asking you to meet after school on the roof top" but would either fuck it up by a) messing up some kanji so it's unreadable and confusing, b) make it sound like a threat, or c) both. how he wrote it is option c.
you ended up going to the rooftop of the school out of curiosity and you see the dark haired boy standing there with a strawberry milk carton, bag of steamed buns, and a single rose (fun fact: the karasuno boys vbc made him get all of those things because let's face it this boy is hopeless with gifts).
as soon as you meet his gaze, his face turns red in record time. he adorably stutters out that he's got the biggest crush on you and you can't help but accept his heartfelt confession.
[m]arriage: do they want to get married? how do they propose? what would the marriage be like?
he would totally want to get married. he'd propose to you at a really really serenic place at night either at like a picnic at the beach or under the night sky on your condo balcony. your wedding would be small private with just your friends and family. the marriage would just be your relationship before y'all got married just now y'all share a bank account.
[n]icknames: what do they call their s/o?
at the beginning of your relationship, he was used to pet names but as he got comfortable in your relationship he uses some of them. the most common ones he uses are things like "honey", "love", and "babe"/"baby"
[o]n cloud nine: what are they like when they are in love? is it obvious for others? how do they express their feelings?
tobio makes it painfully obvious that he has a crush. he's never experienced these feelings before so he doesn't really know how to handle them so it's very obvious to others that he has a crush (even if he doesn't know himself). the longing glances, the flushed cheeks, the spacing out, the stuttering, it's really really obvious to tell if he's infatuated with someone.
he doesn't really express his feelings very well but he does express it by walking you home after school or after his practice, getting you your favorite drink from the vending machine, and just showing he cares in small ways.
[p]da: are they upfront about their relationship? do they brag about their s/o in front of others? or are they rather shy to kiss etc. when others are watching?
kageyama is definitely more reserved when presenting his relationship. he won't go sucking off your face in front of people, but he doesn't mind the small gestures like hand holding and settling his hand on your waist.
when the two of you first got together, he kept it a secret from his team for months until hinata accidently saw the two of you kissing in the closet. it was only then when kageyama decided to announce to the team that the two of you are dating.
[q]uirk: some ability they have that’s beneficial in a relationship.
okay, he is a god at massages and other things with his hands ;))))). so if your back aches from sleeping weird or sitting at a work desk for too long he will gladly give you a quick massage to relieve some of the pain. because of this you learned some massage methods and tricks to help tobio out when he comes from practices sore.
[r]omance: how romantic are they? what would they do to make their s/o happy? cliché or rather creative?
he's not very romantic himself, but he'll do anything he can to make his s/o happy. most of the things he'll do will either be corny and cliché as hell or they'll be super thoughtful and unique. it honestly depends on who he asks for advice (hint: nishinoya and tanaka are cheesy as hell so do what you want with that info)
[s]upport: are they helping their s/o achieve their goals? do they believe in them?
he will support you all the way with your dreams and goals like you've supported him with his professional volleyball dreams. he can't help you much with writing essays or calculating certain equations, but he'll try his best to give you all the emotional support you need to achieve your dreams.
[t]hrill: do they need to try out new things to spice out your relationship? or do they prefer a certain routine?
i think he'd be more of a routine sort of person, but if you want to do something new he will give it his best shot. he'll do anything to make you happy and who knows, maybe he'll discover something new about himself.
[u]nderstanding: how good do they know their partner? are they empathetic?
when it comes to your niche habits and things you like, he knows them like he knows the back of his hand. y'all saw how fast he memorized those lil volleyball signals, he unconsciously memorized all these small little details about you.
when it comes to being empathetic, he's got the right idea but he's going to come off a little off. the best way to get your feelings across to him is by straight up telling him. he'll learn to notice the small signs you give off when something is off.
[v]alue: how important is the relationship to them? what is it’s worth in comparison to other things in their life
he will value your relationship like he values volleyball. he takes most of his relationships seriously so expect him to put the most effort he can. he'd expect you to do the same.
[w]ild card: a random fluff headcannon.
he saw you taking care of your friend's three year old son once. the way you were so doting and motherly towards him made his heart go doki doki. he realizes how much of a good parent you'd make and after that, he sometimes has cute domestic fantasies about having children with you.
[x]oxo: are they very affectionate? do they love to kiss and cuddle?
kageyama is not very affectionate in public, but in private he will be all over you. he's just more comfortable being cutesy and vulnerable in private with you. he will give you cute forehead / head kisses, snuggle you while the two of you sleep, hold your hand while you're doing laundry, and put his chin on your head while you do the dishes. he's just more baby in general when at home away from the public.
[y]earning: how will they cope when they’re missing their partner?
when kageyama misses you he will look at old pictures the two of you have taken together or pictures he has taken of you when you asked him to over the years that you've been together. these get him through some of the more lonelier times when he's away from you due to volleyball competition. he'll hold a pillow trying to pretend it's your warm self, but it doesn't work too well in the end.
[z]eal: are they willing to go to great lengths for the relationship? if so, what kind?
kageyama is willing to do whatever he can for your relationship. as long as you're his anchor in the storm and treat him with kindness, he's willing to move mountains for you. he just loves you very much and will do any action to prove it to you again and again.

☾ the witching hour
☾ decision: balcony
☾ warnings: f!reader, swearing, sfw shirtlessness
☾ word count: 1.6k
Tumblr media
You push the glass door to the side, into the almost winter night. The chilly air that nips at your cheeks seems closer to the frigidity of December than the tailends of fall. Behind you, the buzz of the party burns, like a smattering of fireflies in an autumnal glass globe, protected from the frost. Leaving October behind you, you choose the night.
You’re not alone in wanting a little cold from the chitter chatter. His figure is dimly lit, but you’d recognize the jersey-clad back and soft black hair anywhere. You’d spent many classes last semester daydreaming of this view from behind, his broad back a total eclipse of any other light in your universe.
You begin to call to him, but he turns around first. And you choke.
What the fuck is he wearing.
“What the fuck are you wearing?”
“Oh, hey.” He holds up a hand, unsure of whether to put down the red solo cup he’s holding in the other.
“Why…” You struggle to find the words. “Why are you like that?”
“Like what?” He looks at you blankly.
You gape at him. Does he not know what he’s wearing? Sometimes, he’s a bit absent in class but he’s never this much of an airhead.
“Kageyama,” you enunciate every syllable, “you are shirtless.”
This most blatantly conspicuous statement hangs between the two of you. You stand there, not entirely sure of what else you could say.
Red blooms across Kageyama’s face like the midnight frost. At the same time, almost impossibly, he pales. If you weren’t in such a situation, you would tease him. But you are in such a situation, so you use the social skills in your arsenal — which always bleeds dry in front of this man — and try to salvage the situation.
“I mean, you’re wearing a jersey.” That’s definitely the wrong way to go about this. Neither of you need a double-spaced, Times New Roman twelve-point font, MLA formatted report on his current state of undress. But then again, in the battle between brain and tongue in these situations, your mouth usually runs you straight into trouble. “But, like, you know — I mean I’m sure you know — it’s quite unzipped, you’re rather naked— sorry, I meant undressed — underneath it, and I can see your very successful abs.”
Very successful abs. What the fuck.
Your brain smothers your mouth at that.
To your partial credit, a switch finally flicks on inside Kageyama’s head after your ending thesis statement. He slams the cup down onto the balcony ledge and scrambles to pull the zipper up.
As your mind’s eye watches your audacity in horror, your eyes are enjoying their newfound independence from your rational. They follow the zipper in disappointed fascination as it hooks into the lowest teeth, clicking in slow motion until it hits the highest, tippiest-toppest teeth. Your eyes damn your mind for even mentioning anything about his state of undress, and your mind damns your eyes for being correct.
Meanwhile, in Kageyama’s own head, he runs through the two-and-a-half excuses he can come up with to explain how he could even forget that his jersey was unzipped in this weather. But the most blatant truth is that his one brain cell had been too focused on how good you look in your costume. And right now, that brain cell is so absorbed in thinking up ways to salvage the situation in his own manner that he doesn’t notice your expression changing from an unabashedly appreciative stare to an embarrassed effort to meet his eyes.
“Sorry,” is what he settles for, gaze truly apologetic. “The senpai thought it would be great for us to match.”
“‘Us’? As...what…?” You frown.
“The Karasuno first years.” Oh, right, his high school buddies. “As some stupid characters from some stupid swimming show.”
You look at him, eyes widening by the second, mouth hitting the ground for the umpteenth time in the past five minutes.
“So you mean you’re…?”
Kageyama nods reluctantly.
“And Hinata is…?”
He hangs his head low.
“And Tsukishima…?”
He smirks a little at this.
“That makes Yamaguchi the cute, friendly softie.”
Kageyama’s eyes narrow a little but he nods.
You stare at him, needing a long moment to process this.
Kageyama looks like he wants to throttle someone. Namely his former vice-captain for suggesting it.
And then the stupider two of this party’s hosts for supporting it.
And then his second former vice-captain for hyping it up.
And then his third captain (aka the ‘cute, friendly softie’ you seem pretty friendly with) and his third captain’s girlfriend slash former second manager for accepting this stupid proposal on all of their behalves.
But when you burst into belated laughter at the absurdity of it all, Kageyama’s face hesitantly moves on from the pinched, murderous look he had on and compromises for a nice bewildered confusion.
“Kageyama,” you catch your breath as you lean a hand on his arm for support, “you have to help me find them later.” He nods questioningly but it’s not like he can say no, not when you have a warm hand pressed against his chilled arms, eyes crinkling in the exact way that had Hinata constantly making fun of him for staring at during group projects.
You grin at him as you explain, “I want pictures next to my new favourite cosplayers. Especially Yamaguchi.”
Man, this really is the devil’s hour.
“Do you like Yamaguchi’s type?” He blurts out before he can stop it.
“Huh?”
Leaning against the railing, he looks back at the apartment filled with friends conversing and couples generating warmth. By the couch, Yamaguchi has his arm around Yachi, laughing at something an upperclassmen friend of Bokuto said.
“The cute, friendly softies.”
You laugh casually, looking out at the expanse of the city before you, not quite understanding the weight of his question.
“Sure, why not? Warm personality, cute face. Nothing to not like about them.”
Or maybe you do understand, since for you, the qualities that make a “cute, friendly softie” most definitely applies to your love interest, who is standing out here in the freezing cold with you, dressed in nothing but swim trunks and a sports jersey.
But Kageyama stays silent.
Feeling that you might have said something wrong, you look at him haltingly. Kageyama continues to look into the apartment for a while, and you think that maybe, with the faraway night sky blue of his irises, he’s not really looking at the apartment. And then you catch your own reflections and his sharp blues staring straight at you through the reflections, and your maybe is now a certainty.
It’s so warm.
“Yeah.” He finally turns to you, the real you. On this cold, frigid night, Kageyama takes your honest, heartfelt words positively, a spark of hope on this Hallows Eve. “I like them, too.”
You wait for the magic to finish casting.
“They’re easy to be around. They’re comfy,” he elaborates, face softening. “They’re really warm.”
With a small, beaming smile, you cling onto that magic. Kageyama returns your smile with an equally bright one of his own. You turn to face the city lights again as he shifts his gaze back to the glow of the apartment. He might’ve moved closer — or was that you? — but you two stay in silence, simply there.
You could get used to this, his warmth besides yours in the chilly night. The fireflies fade straight into the background with the heat and comfort that Kageyama generates. For you, this is enough magic for now.
A delicious buzz runs through you, comfortable against the cold night.
You grin to yourself when you feel him flinch beside you as well.
But when he shivers again, practicality hits you.
“Oh shit, Kageyama!” You whip around to look at him. “Aren’t you freezing in that?”
He looks at you, eyes wide and blue in the night.
You make a move to untie your cloak.
His face starts to glow red once again.
“I’m fine!” He protests as you hold the cloak out to him. “I’m really warm!”
A chuckle erupts from you as you roll your eyes.
“Yeah, you are,” you grin, a teasing glint in your tone. “I was a bit chilly coming out here, but you’re pretty warm, Kageyama.”
The blush that engulfs him has Kageyama believing that you truly are a witch — and not just on this devil’s night.
He knows next to nothing about this stupid swimming show, but he, as Kageyama Tobio, cannot be outdone by a mere witch.
“I guess I am a bit cold,” Kageyama admits with a lopsided smile.
You huff out a satisfactory grin, passing him your cloak, victory in hand. Kageyama throws it around his shoulders, and you watch with barely-concealed admiration as his form dwarfs the cloak.
As you stand there, beaming up at him as if you could successfully ignore the cold, he barks out a short laugh.
Grinning at you slightly, Kageyama opens up his borrowed cloak.
“You look a bit cold.” His eyes hold all the impish blue magic of the hour. “I have a borrowed cloak from a cute friendly softie that we can share.”
You almost choke on the chilly air as it’s now your turn to flush red. He laughs, quite embarrassed at his spurt of gusto, and pulls you close, enveloping you in both the cloak and his body heat. As your city and friends come together for the last of October, you’re here to take on the wintery night, embraced in the magic of December’s warmth.

square cut or pear shaped
A/N: i listened to Marilyn Monroe’s “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” and had to write an engagement fic. Happy birthday, @dasfreefree // @freefree-likes-haikyuu!!!!!
(ao3 & ko-fi links will be in the reblog)
When Kaede took you to get your nails done before your anniversary dinner with Keishin, you got suspicious. Nails are attached to fingers which are used to wear engagement rings.
And Kaede cared enough about aesthetics to make sure your social media engagement announcement photo would be flawless.
If she did know anything, she wasn’t saying.
Noa might have let something slip. But Kaede had an airtight seal.
“It’s been a while since we’ve gotten manicures together, Kaede,” you glanced at her from the corner of her eye.
“I know. All of these work trips have been wiping me out.”
“Maybe I should get flame designs on my nails.”
“...Flames?”
“Yea, like the details they put on cars.”
Kaede smiled. “You’re so adventurous with your nails, ____. But you do have that important meeting with that publishing house next Wednesday. They already mistake you for an intern. I don’t think that design would help. It would be cute for our next girls’ trip though.”
And she was right.
So much for getting her to slip up that way.
There was too much evidence that something was going on. Your best friend took you to get your nails done. Your boyfriend was taking you out to a secret location. And it was to celebrate your two-year anniversary.
It could also be a coincidence. A rational side of you chimed in.
You and Keishin had only been dating for two years. There wasn’t a rush to get married.
Which almost convinced you until Keishin pulled up in front of your favorite restaurant.
Wondering if it’d offer you another clue, you examined what he was wearing— a button down and slacks. He winked at you when he caught you staring.
“Take a photo. It’ll last longer. Let’s go!”
You followed him to the restaurant, holding his hand. Your eyes slightly narrowed as he greeted the hostess.
If there’s a secret signal, I’m going to catch it.
The two of you were seated near a window with a great view of the nearby gardens.
Your favorite restaurant, on your two-year anniversary, with a great view? Keishin was definitely going to propose.
“Are you okay over there? You look like you just laid an egg.”
“Just thinking.”
“About what?”
“Just that you planned everything so well. Thank you.”
Keishin smirked at you. “Why do you make it sound like I don’t plan?”
“No no. That’s not what I mean.”
“So what do you mean?”
“That everything is so nice. Thank you!”
“Anything for you, my love.”
Dinner was...okay. You loved spending time with Keishin but waiting for the ring was exhausting.
“Is everything okay?”
“You don’t have to keep asking me that, Keishin.” You smiled, “I’m having a lovely time. Truthfully.”
“Ok."
You were about to go back to playing with your leftovers on your plate when your couple song came on.
Beaming, you looked at Keishin who smiled back. Your hand reached across the table for his.
“Oh, Keishin,” you pulled back to go into your purse, “I almost forgot my gift for you.” Handing him a long rectangular box, you waited for his reaction.
“Babe.” He grinned, opening the box.
You watched his eyebrows rise.
“____, I love it.” He took the watch out and put it on his wrist. The gold band reflected the light beautifully. The white face was classic and understated, much more his style.
“Oh,” you cooed. “It matches your outfit!”
“It does. I didn’t get you an anniversary gift.”
“You’re paying for dinner.” You wrinkled your nose. “I’d say we’re even.
Keishin lifted your hand and kissed your knuckles. “There is another surprise.”
Sitting up straight, your eyes grew. “There is?”
“Yea.” he smiled.
The waiter came to clear your plates.
“What is it?”
Keishin squeezed your hand and you felt your heart race.
“Per Ukai-san’s request,” the waiter set a plate in front of you, “the lady’s favorite dessert.”
“Surprise!”
With your focus on the dessert in front of you, you struggled to hold back your disappointment. “Keishin...I-This is such a nice surprise.” You smiled at him, squeezing his hand.
“You don’t like it.”
“What do you mean? It’s my favorite.”
“They have a new dessert menu if you want to choose something else.” He raised his hand to signal the waiter.
“No, Keishin. This is good.” You chuckled, “I was just expecting something else when you said surprise.” You picked your fork to dig in. “Thank you.”
+
The patter of Kaede’s feet preceded her appearance at your apartment’s well.
“Hello! Let me see it.”
“There’s nothing to show.” You bent down to take your shoes off.
“____, don’t be dramatic. I want to see the ring.”
“He didn’t propose, Kaede.”
After you finished taking your shoes off, you looked up at her, surprised she didn’t react.
Her nostrils kept flaring. You knew she was fuming. “I oughta clobber him,” she said.
“Oh, feel free to get in line.” You stomped past her. “I totally thought he was going to propose, too.” While you stormed around the house, you recounted everything that happened.
“He has to propose to you soon.”
You shrugged. “Waiting like any moment might be the moment isn’t really fun.”
“I guess it’s a good thing I waited to pop open a bottle of champagne, huh?”
A snort turned into a groan. “My wonderful boyfriend took me on an amazing date to celebrate our two-year anniversary. What a lousy thing to complain about.”
“You’re not complaining about the date though. And you love your boyfriend. A good night’s rest will do you good.”
“Ok, mom.”
“Off to bed, wise guy.”
+
You did feel refreshed the next day. And looking back objectively, last tonight was a great date.
When Keishin asked if you wanted to go on a walk, you agreed.
It was great walking weather, sunny with a light breeze. Keishin stood up when you got closer to the rendezvous spot.
“Hey, babe.”
“Hey to you, too.” He kissed your forehead and you leaned into him for a hug.
“Anniversary Celebration part 2, electric boogaloo.” You grabbed his hand. The two of you walked towards the cherry blossoms. “The blossoms seem to bloom earlier and earlier each year.”
“They’re probably confused. Winter this year was so warm.”
“I know. Kaede says the only good thing about all of this is that the predictions about the peak are starting to be off. So, she can go enjoy them before we’re swamped by tourists.”
“Yea, she doesn't like tourists.”
“Not at all,” you laughed. “How are Hinata-kun and Kageyama-kun doing? I’m sure they were happy to be back at the school’s court?”
After a moment, you turned to Keishin.
“Babe?”
“Hmm?”
“Are you okay?”
“Yea, sorry. Got lost in thought.”
“You wanna talk about it?” You searched his face.
“It’s fine.” He shoved his hand in his jacket pocket.
“Ok.” You squeezed the other hand.
“You asked about the freak duo? Yea, they’re happy to be back. I think Hinata’s excited to be vice-captain. He’ll be a great help for the late bloomers.”
“He makes friends so easily. In my humble opinion, it was a great choice.”
Keishin smiled at you.
After your second lap around the park, you tugged Keishin to stop.
“Okay, mister. What’s up? You’ve been so fidgety. Are you sure everything’s okay?” You pulled your hand from his.
“E-everything’s fine.”
“Are you seriously not gonna tell me?”
Keishin looked away from you, muttering under his breath. Then, he grew deathly still. “Look, ____,” he let go of your hand and dug into his pants pocket. “I’ve been carrying this around for month,” he pulled his hand out, “waiting for the right moment. And I’ll tell you: there is no right moment...So, right here,” he motioned around, “under the cherry blossoms, I’m just,” he pushed his hair back, “I’m just going to ask you right now.” He revealed a small jewelry box.
Your eyes grew as Keishin took your hand and got down on one knee. “No way.”
“____,” he cursed, mumbling under his breath. “My hands are shaking. Hold on, I’m really nervous.”
Even if you wanted to tease him or laugh, you were frozen with shock.
“____.”
“Yes.” You tried to memorize everything about this moment: the blond ends of his hair, the way his eyes looked steady, his earrings, the nicer jacket you got him last Christmas, the warmth of hand, the pink of the cherry blossom petals.
“You are the love of my life,” Keishin said.
“Keishin.” A weight pressed against your chest and your eyes started to burn. You reached up to wipe your eyes.
“I can’t begin to describe how important you are to me. We’re just made for each other, you know? And I don’t ever want to know a day apart from you. ____, will you marry me?”
“Of course, Keishin!”
The triumphant grin on his face thrilled you. Keishin sprung up to hug you.
It felt so right.
Being in his arms.
Knowing he loved you as much as you did.
Starting a brand new chapter of your lives together.

look I just want like...a 30k fic about how Tanaka finds out that Kiyoko likes him back at the beginning of his 3rd year. BUT SINCE NO ONE HAS DONE IT AS FAR AS I CAN TELL I'LL JUST DROP THIS HC HERE
---
It takes him weeks to ask her out on a date, even knowing she likes him back, and, when she admits she was initially attracted to the way he never gave up and she didn't want to distract him while he played volleyball, he asks if he can ask her again after his last inter-high.
After that, and a few clumsy phone calls, they slide into a new, comfortable dynamic. He sends her pics and vids of silly team shenanigans and she starts a chain of good mornings and sleep wells. They end up spending hours talking on the weekend and messaging during the week.
Kiyoko comes back and surprises the team by cheering in the stands at the fall qualifer. Nishinoya cries and Kinnoshita shoves a towel in his face while Tsukishima and Yamaguchi argue over a water bottle in the background. They lose - just barely - to Date Tech and train harder than ever, joining Nekoma, Fukurodani, Shinzen, and Ubugawa at their camps. Narita sneaks out and sends everyone a shaky video of Takeda-sensei, pink-cheeked, with an arm haphazardly slung around coach Ukai's shoulders, singing the Doraemon theme song in a karaoke bar.
During the next camp that bleeds into Golden Week, Tanaka sneaks out, too. He takes Kiyoko to look at the lanterns and she slips her mitten into his. When he finally slips into his futon he grins at the ceiling for nearly half an hour before he calms down enough to fall asleep. The next day Levi and Inouka get so many spikes past him that the team makes him run double the sprints every time they lose a set.
Kiyoko is accepted into the sports physio program and, at a sempai's request and Tanaka's urging, becomes one of the managers for the soccer team.
The team burns through to the spring inter-high, spiking their way to Nationals, only to lose to Inazakari in the semi-finals. Kageyama and Hinata seem thrilled, already arguing about breaking the tie at Nationals next year on the way to the bus as Kinnoshita, Narita, Tanaka, and Ennoshita clutch each other, sniffling hard and memorizing the last moments they'll stand on a court in high school.
Tanaka and the other third years retire from the team. He and Kiyoko agree to keep it slow, especially because she's hours away at uni. The final couple months for Tanaka are filled with study sessions, yelling at his kouhai who try to take advantage of Yamaguchi, and pranking the other 2nd years just for fun. Kiyoko and Suga show up, smiling next to their parents, and they go to a restaurant.
Tanaka fully intends to sit with next to Ennoshita, rib him a few final times as a good vice-captain should, but he blinks and ends up next to Kiyoko, Nishinoya cackling on her other side and the rest of the 3rd years sitting across. He tries to play it cool but Kiyoko is closer than before and he too aware of how her thigh brushes against his when he leans forward to take a bite. He wants to hold her hand again so bad, to tell everyone about that this actual goddess has blessed him but they haven't talked about that yet so he pushes it down and distracts himself by challenging everyone to a straw wrapper caterpillar race.
He gets a job, moves closer to Tokyo and Kioyoko, meets her every day for lunch between classes with a bento box, learns how to make them himself so he can write silly messages, and loves the way she reacts to every one of them. He studies the notes that one ji-san on the train gave him until he's sure he's got the perfect plan then, too soon and not soon enough, he proposes. It goes wildly, hysterically wrong and he ends up on his ass, covered in muddy water in the middle of January, Kiyoko kneeling down to meet him for a kiss after she says yes.

sailing to the top ch. 6 snippet
“So,” Kageyama started, trying to mask his nervous eagerness with indifference. “What now? You do know that the press won’t stop bothering you until you reveal everything.”
“Hmm,” Hinata hummed. “It’ll be no fun if we just sit and down and go ‘surprise!’”
“Of course,” Kageyama deadpanned.
Hinata giggled.
“What?”
“Wouldn’t it be funny if everyone was expecting a boyfriend reveal, but it turned out you were my fiancé or something?”
The setter stiffened and looked down at Hinata who was still scrolling through his phone in casual gesture, as if remarking about the weather. “W-What if…” Kageyama cleared his throat. Citrus-scented waves lightly tickled his cheeks, soft and warm, smelling of summer days and all its vibrance. Gazing down, he could clearly count each individual freckle, a constellation dusting his nose and cheeks, as if the stars couldn’t all be contained in his eyes and found home on sunkissed skin. God, he loved this man. “Let’s do it.”
“Hm? Do what?” Shouyou asked offhandedly, still absorbed in the content on his phone.
“Get engaged.”
And finally, Kageyama had his boyfriend’s attention.
“Huuh?!” Hinata straightened abruptly, gripping Kageyama’s forearm in alarm. “W-W-What?!”
Kageyama flicked his boyfriend’s forehead. “You’re the one who brought it up first, dumbass.”
Hinata blushed furiously, “Y-Yeah…But…”
The setter raised a brow, “What, so you didn’t mean it?”
“O-Of course I meant it, Bakayama! But…”
“But….?”
The remaining shock flickered and wavered, dying down as it was replaced with resolve and a typical fire. Honey-tinted eyes looked up intensely into cobalt ones, “Okay. Let’s do it.”
Of course, Kageyama had already been thinking about proposing. He just didn’t know where to even begin.
His boyfriend was a simple person through and through, fancy clothes and elegant dinner dates a nemesis to the loud and energetic whirlwind that was Hinata Shouyou. When requesting help from his senpais, Suga-san suggested a picnic. It was a great idea, the only problem being the lack of privacy. While private reservations were possible at restaurants, the open nature was free for everyone. Suffice to say, Kageyama did not know how he would propose, only that he wanted to.
As a last resort, he had texted Kenma, begrudgingly admitting that the former setter would know what Hinata would like best.
KENMA
kenma: the best proposal for shouyou would be one that isn’t a surprise.
kenma: if u were to surprise him with a ring and shou didn’t have one prepared for u
kenma: i think deep down he would feel a little sad that he didnt have a ring to give u too
kenma: idk if that makes things harder or easier for u but i don’t think u need to worry about planning a surprise or smth complicated. if anything, just go ring shopping together and make a casual date out of it. i think he would really like that.
kageyama: that helps a lot. thank you kenma
kenma: np, gl kageyama
And Kageyama knew Kenma was right. But, given that, casually remarking his desire to get engaged seemed just as difficult as planning an elaborate surprise.
However, Hinata had, unknowingly, granted him an opening, and it was a moment of pure spontaneity. Intoxicated by summer smells and sunkissed skin, Kageyama had blurted out his proposal, and Hinata had accepted it with a breathtaking grin and tender kiss. It was the best spontaneous decision Kageyama had ever made. It couldn’t have been more perfect…more them.
True to Kenma’s word, Hinata had loved the idea of a ring shopping date. The ginger had gotten eagerly dressed for their day out, stuffing his bright hair into an inconspicuous cap and throwing a mask onto Kageyama’s face before excitedly rushing themselves out the door.
“Now we can give rings to each other at the same time! How perfect is that!” Hinata skipped, swinging their interlocked hands as they easily maneuvered through the Tokyo crowd.
Kageyama smiled, his hand tightening around Hinata’s. “I had wanted to surprise you with it, but I’m glad you’re enjoying this.”
Hinata pouted, “But if you surprised me, then that means you would’ve beaten me!”
“Huuuh?” Kageyama stared at his boyfriend, bafflement etched in furrowed brows. “Proposing isn’t a competition!”
“Bakageyama! Shh!” Hinata yelled, covering the setter’s mouth with his free hand. “I know we’re disguised right now, but what if people recognize you through your scary voice!”
The setter tried to express his disbelief through his practiced glare. Shaking his head, he let out a loud huff through his nose. “enma ‘asight.”
Hinata removed his hand, “Huh?”
Kageyama rolled his eyes. “I said Kenma was right.”
“About what?”
“He said you would want to present rings together rather than me surprise you because you’d be sad if I were the only one who had a ring ready.” With his free hand, he cuffed the ginger on the head, “But he never said anything about you making it a competition, boke.”
Hinata giggled, “It was probably implied.”
Kageyama sighed and pulled his boyfriend along, unable to form a reply to such idiocy. Although, he probably would have felt the same way if Hinata proposed first, but he would never admit that; he had a reputation to uphold as the smarter half of their relationship. He was a genius, after all.
After allowing himself to be dragged a few paces, Hinata suddenly pulled back, tugging Kageyama’s arm to a halt. The setter turned. “What?”
“I have an idea!” A grin lit up Hinata’s face, “If we buy the rings separately and give them to each other at the end of the day, it’ll still be kind of a surprise!”
“Huh?”
“We won’t know what kind of rings we’re gonna receive, so the element of surprise is still there! It’ll be fun! Okay?” And before Tobio could reply, Hinata had already run off. “I’ll meet you at the park at 6!” he yelled with a last wave.
With a sigh, Kageyama stared as the black cap hiding the conspicuous ginger hair slowly got lost in the crowd. Glancing at the time, he had roughly four hours to find a ring, and he was going to find a damn perfect one.
Four hours later, he made his way to the park, his heart clutched in his hand in form of a small, black box. The raven walked toward a bench where a familiar silhouette sat. As he drew closer, the figure looked up and stood. A gentle breeze lightly ruffled ginger waves and freckled cheeks lifted in an uncharacteristic shy smile, “Hi, Tobio.” He held up a ball that was by his side. “Want to play?”
With the silhouette cast by the setting sun, Kageyama had assumed the ball was a volleyball because what else could it be? However, when he nodded and walked closer, he realized it was a soccer ball. The bashful smile gone and replaced with a competitive grin the setter knew all too well, what could he do but mirror that resolve. Soccer it was.
Unfortunately, pure force of will and volleyball genius did not translate into coordinated footwork. In fact, volleyball genius instinctively reached for the ball with outstretched hands when the infuriatingly natural athlete that was Hinata Shouyou would kick the ball into a perfect arc in the air.
“You can’t touch the ball, Bakayama!” Hinata would yell, a loud laugh following.
Kageyama would reply by setting the ball to his head.
The game of soccer was quickly attempted and forgotten, and the ball rested between their feet as the two volleyball athletes relaxed against a tree. In the distance, the sun kissed the horizon, and as if hearings its own confession, the sky glowed with the sweetest blush. The clouds blossomed pink and golden rays caressed the earth with soft tranquility. The summer breeze danced across the grass, lightly kissing the hairs of those it passed by and leaving it frivolously tousled. Tobio ran long, pale fingers through the soft, ginger locks, further messing what the wind left behind. “Shou?”
“Hmm?”
“Did I ever tell you what my Jii-san told me?”
“That you’d meet someone who would be better than you at volleyball?”
Kageyama hummed. He gently dislodged Hinata’s head from his shoulder and turned to grab both his hands, now sitting face-to-face. “Yeah… When I first heard that, I hated it: hated the thought of someone being better, the thought of losing. But when it came to you, I never minded losing.” He looked down at their intertwined hands, unable to stare directly into those brown eyes, a dark amber that glowed with a vibrant warmth reminiscent of sweet love, indomitable spirit, and childlike grins. “I-I mean…I don’t enjoy losing. But…it doesn’t feel bad when it’s to you. It makes me feel more…motivated and it’s…nice,” he finished dumbly.
Hinata snorted, though it was with a fond smile and slightly damp eyes. “That’s because you’re just competitive” He sniffed and rubbed his eyes roughly. “Baka Bakayama,” he muttered, clutching at Kageyama’s sleeve tightly. “Making me cry with all your…words.”
The setter smiled as he lifted a hand to gently wipe a falling tear. Shouyou leaned into the touch.
Kageyema shifted to present the box he had shoved in his pocket. “Uhm,” he began awkwardly. “I know people normally wear their engagement rings on their hands…”
Hinata laughed, “Yes, Tobio. That’s where rings usually go.”
The setter glared at his boyfriend. Shouyou giggled harder but nudged Kageyama to continue, eyes gentle and fond.
Kageyama cleared his throat, “As I was saying…” He opened the box and carefully took out the ring. Hinata gasped as a gold chain followed. “I didn’t know when exactly you wanted to go public with our relationship, but it’s difficult to wear a ring and hide it. But necklaces are easier…”
“Oh, Tobio,” Hinata breathed, eyes shimmering with unshed tears. But before Kageyama could continue, the ginger had started to fumble with his pocket and hastily pulled a similar sized box. The setter observed curiously as Shouyou also opened the box and took out a ring. His eyes widened when he saw a similar chain follow.
“I also asked if they had a chain for the ring.” Hinata blushed as he let the chain dangle from his fingers, metal glinting as it caught the sun intermittently as the breeze swayed the ring back and forth. “Not because I wanted you to hide it or anything,” he added hurriedly. “I just thought, since we can’t wear jewelry when we play, it might be harder to lose the ring if it were on a chain…” The ginger clutched the necklace nervously and slightly lowered his hand, “But now I’m realizing it’s a stupid reason because a necklace is basically just as small as a ring, and it would still be easy to lose. So technically there was no point in getting the ring as a neckl—”
“I love it.” Tobio quickly cut off Shouyou’s rambling. He held up his own necklace-ring, unclasping it, and put it around Hinata’s neck. “Love you.”
Tears streamed freely down Shouyou’s face as he, too, clasped the necklace around the setter’s neck, “Surprise, Tobio.”
Tobio chuckled. “You’re a dumbass,” he whispered, slowly leaning in.
“But I’m your dumbass,” Shouyou smiled cheekily with shimmering eyes and damp cheeks.
“Just shut up,” Kageyama muttered.
The ginger giggled though it was quickly swallowed by a kiss.
Unfortunately, their week-long break had come to an end, and goodbyes, no matter how common, never became easier. But this time, they departed as fiancés, a physical promise of their forever hidden under clothes, away from prying eyes, but closer to heart.
