(My thoughts on turning the tables in vore)
Honestly, I don't have a lot of opinions on this as I haven't seen it done a lot, or done in a way I liked. It can be an interesting chance for character development for a prey to suddenly have a large amount of power over a pred, or for a pred to be in an uncomfortable and helpless position.
I think the biggest reason I don't tend to gravitate towards it much is that usually, prey and preds are different species entirely - in safe vore, at least, the pred is DESIGNED to be able to eat the prey safely. Unless you're talking about a Freaky Friday situation (which actually might be hilarious), the prey is often not designed to be able to eat the pred safely, and fatal vore is pretty 50/50 for me.
The one time I can think of where I saw this trope done well was the Unseen Legion series by @philicheesecake , where it starts out with the pred getting shrunk down to the same size as the prey (and potentially being in danger of becoming prey themselves). I thought that was done sooo well. The concept of preds temporarily shifting down to prey size but still maintaining the things that make them "predatory" (their senses, hunger, physical features like claws or fangs, instincts, etc.) is a REALLY good concept to me. Probably because I'm not really a fan of same size vore, but I still enjoy that face-to-face, same size interaction. It's great for fearplay.
#toast-asks#go read unseen legion it's soooo good#they're doing a whole dang comic guys!#and the writing bits past what's been drawn are just#hot dang

Huge thanks to Monty over at @sas-afras for getting this one done! I handled the original layout and lettering, but the rest was all them. Layouts like this can seem simple and easy because of how straight-forward and repetitive they are, but when all you've got are a dozen and one reaction shots, every single one of those reaction shots needs to be as perfect as you can get them. And Monty did a hell of a job. Especially on the coloring! Monty, if you're reading this, you're a hell of a good colorist (on top of everything else). Thanks again!
Another note about this issue is that it, along with the previous one, were some of the most difficult to write in this whole damn comic so far. I really hate repeating in-game dialogue verbatim without good reason, but there's really not much else I could do here. It's a very necessary part of the story that is also literally a part in the game where your character is fixed in place listening to a monologue. I took some liberties, did some punch-up, not just for its own sake but to really drive home what I find most interesting and vital here about Mr. House as a character.
Anyway, Agnes is in trouble. And there's only one issue left in Volume 2! The next one closes out this arc of the story, at long last. Stay tuned.
Transcript
INT. LUCKY 38 BASEMENT. From an observation deck of sorts, AGNES SANDS watches several SECURITRON robots position themselves in a testing area, containing several sandbags, dummies, and makeshift fortifications. A voice booms from an unseen speaker.
MR. HOUSE: You're well familiar with my Securitron police force. But have you ever wondered: what exactly makes them the marquee option in perimeter security and pacification?
AGNES glances in the direction of the voice, uncomfortable.
MR. HOUSE: Well to start, the reinforced titanium alloy housing of each unit, which protects its electronic core, easily deflects small arms and shrapnel.
MR. HOUSE: As for its offensive capabilities, its X-25 gatling laser—produced to spec by Glastinghouse, Inc.—is deadly against soft targets at medium range.
SFX: BZZTZZTZZTZZTZZT
AGNES recoils as a red glow washes over her from the testing area.
MR. HOUSE: And then for close-range suppression or crowd control, the Securitron is also armed with a 9mm sub-machinegun.
SFX: DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA
AGNES shuts her eyes, wincing from the crack of gunfire.
MR. HOUSE: These features have been sufficient for keeping the peace within Vegas, but with the NCR and Legion closing in on Hoover Dam, and sizing up my city like a piece of prize cake, more than ever we need to be prepared for, well...external conflict. Policing is one thing, but when geopolitical powers are involved, my Securitrons can only pose so much of a threat.
MR. HOUSE: That is...if they're forced to rely exclusively on their secondary weapons--as they have been, all this time!
AGNES looks upward, surprised.
MR. HOUSE: Remember, the Great War interrupted a pivotal moment for RobCo's work. Consequently, all extant Securitrons have been stuck, running on a mere Mark I operating system—the first production version of the OS—which has simply lacked the software drivers for the use of their primary weapons all this time!
AGNES looks around, as if HOUSE were in the room somewhere and she could find him, in a panic.
MR. HOUSE: The platinum chip, you see, was never just a token. At a time when industrial espionage ran rampant, it was minted as a high capacity, proprietary, and uniquely irreplicable data storage device. In a way, it's more like a computer chip. And now—with the data from the platinum chip finally installed onto my nextwork—it's time for a very crucial software update. Behold: the new Mark II Securitrons!
AGNES gawks downward at the testing area, eyes wide. Oh no.
MR. HOUSE: Their newly accessible M-235 Missile Launcher gives them the ability to engage ground and air targets at significantly longer ranges...
SFX: PSSSSSHHH KTHOOM THOOM THOOM THOOM
AGNES flinches, covering her face for protecting, and screams as explosions rip apart the testing area below.
MR. HOUSE: ...and their rapid-fire G-28 grenade launching system, another part of the Mark II, makes them much more powerful in close-range engagements as well.
SFX: THMP THMP THMP KRRSSH KRAKTK KABOOM
AGNES, nearly frozen, watches the bombardment with horror.
MR. HOUSE: It also includes rewritten drivers for the Securitrons' auto-repair systems—although always sophisticated, the new optimizations render them inexhaustible in even the most protracted and attritious of engagements. Altogether, the Mark II upgrade confers a 235% total increase in combat effectiveness per unit—and it's all because of you!
AGNES lowers her arm slowly, jaw slack, mortified.
MR. HOUSE: Vegas finally has an army—worthy to protect not just the city itself, but the best interests of all of mankind, at home and abroad. Which is to say: this simple display of might remains a mere teaser for what I can, and what I will, accomplish, in an illustrious new epoch.
AGNES sinks further into a paralytic terror.
MR. HOUSE: What we will accomplish, Agnes—should you accept my offer, of employment. Ah—but I digress. I'm certain that you've had a long day. You can rejoin Miss Cassidy in the presidential suite for the night, if you'd like to, as they say, "sleep on it."
MR. In fact...say for as long as you'd like. However long you may need, to think everything over. And you'll be very well provided for in the meantime, consider it a taste of what could be...should you make the right choice before you.
MR. HOUSE: That reminds me—I've already sent Victor to collect your belongings from the Vault 22 Hotel, so no need to exhaust yourself further by making that trip on your own, hm? There's much about your future to consider, Agnes—and I would like you to think of it as our future.
AGNES stares straight ahead with a deadened expression.
The testing area in the basement has been reduced to smithereens. Fires rage on the rubble of obliterated structures, gnarled steel, and collapsed walkways. The dummies have been dismembered entirely.
MR. HOUSE: ...Goodness, what a mass. With friends like these, I sure wouldn't envy my enemies.
MR. HOUSE: Wouldn't you agree?

Kaiju Weeks in Review (July 16-29, 2023)
Legendary announced a pair of Monsterverse comics during a panel at San Diego Comic Con. They've said nothing further since, and no one posted the panel online, so I have less to tell you than I'd like. Godzilla x Kong: The Hunted is the obligatory prequel comic for the film. From the pages they showed off, it looks like Zid has art duties again (well-deserved) and the monsters that Kong is fighting could be the "swamp kitt[ies]" cut from Godzilla vs. Kong. Release date is February 27. Monsterverse Declassified is going to spotlight some of the series' original monsters, with the previews showing Behemoth, Amhuluk, and Tiamat. (Supposedly Scylla, Doug, and the previously-unseen Abaddon will be in it too.)
Toho is finally letting Togen's 4K scans of some of its Godzilla films out of satellite TV jail as tie-ins to Godzilla Minus One. Godzilla (1954) and Mothra vs. Godzilla are coming to 4K Ultra HD on October 25, with Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster, Invasion of Astro-Monster, and Destroy All Monsters on November 22 and Godzilla vs. Hedorah and Godzilla vs. Biollante. Expect them to be as English-unfriendly as Toho's other releases - but a vague promise of "unused special effects footage", combined with some very crisp-looking photos in a recent book, means there's a chance the Frontier Missile sequence from Godzilla vs. The Thing will be included with Mothra vs. Godzilla. That'd be a godsend, considering how elusive an uncropped, uncut, high-quality version of the scene has proven to be.
These releases will easily be the best Mothra vs. Godzilla, Ghidorah, Astro-Monster, and Biollante have ever looked on home video. But with Togen shutting down, it's unclear when the rest of the pre-Shin films in the series will get upgrades. (It's also unclear when Toho will permit anyone outside Japan to use these versions for streaming or home video.) So this announcement feels bittersweet to me.
youtube
We have a release date for GAMERA -Rebirth- (September 7), a second trailer, and a reveal for the final monster: Viras! As @starestream pointed out, there's a lot of Legion in that design (along with Iris in Zigra). And as Maser Patrol pointed out, this is the same enemy kaiju lineup that Trendmasters chose for its toyline back in 1998. Poor Barugon, no one wants to taste the rainbow (and it probably hurts that he's so visually similar to Jiger too). To be honest, this trailer didn't do much for me; a bit too chaotic. Hopefully it'll be easier to tell what's happening in the show proper.
Bandai, of course, has readied Movie Monster Series figures of Viras, Zigra, and Guiron already. We're also getting a prequel manga set 100,000 years before the show.
Decades after his rampage through the Marvel Universe, Godzilla is barging into the world of DC (where he'll finally meet Batman). Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong is a seven-issue limited series launching October 17, written by Brian Buccellato (who also penned the short "Fight or Flight" comic that will be included in Legends of the Monsterverse: The Omnibus later this year) with art by Christian Duce. The inciting incident is a battle between the Justice League and the Legion of Doom, which tears a hole in reality to let the Monsterverse through.
I'll confess, I was more jazzed for last year's Power Rangers crossover, thanks to the tokusatsu link. This could just be more of Warner Bros. Discovery bashing its toys together. I'm most curious to see if the Legion of Doom makes a bid to conquer the Monsterverse, which with Godzilla and Kong out of the picture is far less prepared for them than the DC universe is for a couple of giant monsters. Superman beats them all, as Ken Yano once said.
Hiya is stepping further out of S.H.Monsterarts' shadow with a figure of the female MUTO, a character long neglected by toymakers. They showed her off at San Diego Comic Con. Playmates meanwhile releases an ad for Titan Tech Rodan - I'm glad they're not giving up on this delightful subline.
Summer Smash concludes IDW's middle-grade Monsters and Protectors storyline, which has spanned the entirety of their second go-round with Godzilla. You can tell it was supposed to be another miniseries; Godzilla, Jet Jaguar, and Mothra send Mecha-King Ghidorah and the Xiliens packing pretty quickly. Art's still great though.
Godzilla Rivals will persist into October with Vs. Mechagodzilla, the magnificent machine being the last of the Toho's Big Five to headline one of these comics. The intriguing logline:
IS YOUR CITY BESIEGED BY KAIJU? DO YOU LIE AWAKE AT NIGHT ANXIOUSLY LISTENING FOR THE MONSTER SIRENS? HAVE YOU HAD ALL YOU CAN TAKE OF GIANT LIZARDS, MOTHS, PTERODACTYLS, AND SHRIMP? THEN CALL TRACER TECH TODAY! OUR STATE-OF-THE-ART ANTI-KAIJU TECHNOLOGY HAS ALLOWED DOZENS OF CITIES AROUND THE WORLD TO FEND OFF THE THREAT OF MONSTER ATTACK. San Palomar, California. It’s a sleepy city with not much going on. That is, until Tracer Tech built their new corporate headquarters there, displacing lifelong citizens and forcing out local businesses. But what is the source of Tracer’s amazing, almost alien technology, and why has it put San Palomar in Godzilla’s sights? And what can a couple of local kids like Alex and Jaz do to protect their city when the King of the Monsters and its robot doppelgänger clash?
SRS Cinema has opened preorders for The Whale God, revealing this cover art by Bob Eggleton. Special features aren't anything spectacular (they're vaguely described, but I think a couple of essays are included, plus the obligatory trailers). Should be out by the end of the year.
The disc replacement program for Cleopatra Entertainment's misbegotten Shin Ultraman releases has resulted in an only marginally better product. The opening montage has subtitles now... but like the rest of the movie, they're just copied from the English dub. Dubtitles in 2023... and for a film that already has a perfectly good official English translation, no less. Oh, and they threw in some new visual glitches too. If your local library picks up a copy, I recommend telling them about the disc replacement program (as I've done), but don't give these clowns your money.

I recently got a Comics Journal publication collecting most of their major coverage of Kirby and my mistake tonight was reading the "who is the author of Marvel?" article. Collected in the same book is the 1990 published interview with both Jack and Roz Kirby by Gary Groth, that to this day "lives rent free" in the heads of many a people as if this is the first interview Kirby ever held for a publication of this type or the first time he ever made any of these statements.
The "author" article by Earl Wells comes to the Stan Lee conclusion as to not ward off the unseen legion of adult man-children reading The Comics Journal in 1995, much the same as The Jack Kirby Collector magazine or American Comic Book Chronicles does today. Wells' conclusion stands in delicious juxtaposition where Roz openly interjects in the interview with "can I just say -" and comments the length of Kirby's career prior to and after his stint at Marvel in the 1960's, and Lee has no equivalent record to speak of. The question of "who actually wrote those books" was answered by it was ever asked, when Kirby leaves Marvel in 1970 and begins working at DC again and immediately debuts The New Gods, The Forever People, and Mister Miracle. This is 2 + 2 = 4 level math. This is context clues and pattern recognition a small child could pick up on. This is a "Hey wait a minute" for anyone outside of the dense fandom mentality of comic book readers, who day in and day out seem to make active attempts at proving Alan Moore right about them.
The truth cannot be trampled on forever, nor will it be or should it be.

Young justice season 4 theories part 2
Alright strap in cause this is part 2 of loosing my sanity trying to predict season 4 of young justice. And oh boy are you in for a ride today.
So my last post on this (linked above) was mostly on Wally West, Greta Hayes, the Legion of superheroes, Jason Todd and Bart Allen. I went on about Easter eggs and other thing but I’ve just scraped the barrel on the absurd amount of speculation I call theories. So I’ll go ahead and develop my thoughts on the legion, and add some other details that I’ve seen that I think could lead into some other story arcs.
The Legion Of Superheroes
I’ll be the legion isn’t my forte in comic book knowledge buuuuut, here’s my take on what could happen. This will have some similar points to the ones I made in my last post but bare with me. I already touched upon the easter egg we had and how this might be a way we get Wally back. But what I think is more likely is the house of El.
So let me explain... I've already said that we could meet Kara but I think it could be anyone from the house of El. One of the founding members is superboy, which one though changes so we could see a storyline from that prespective. If we do I think it could go in a bunch of different directions and I might make a post separately for all the ways I think this could play out uf the focus on the superman family. (Tell me if you want to see this).
Other than that it could center on rectifying some mistake in the timestream. Maybe some domino effect Bart caused by avoiding the reach invasion. I don't really know how else this could work but I kinda see this as a posibility.
The Outsiders
With the outsiders I’ve seen that the members deviate A LOT from the comics. Obviously, the series wants to go where the comics can’t. They want to see the characters grow at a rate that’s basically unseen. But some current members that I think could be brought into the team without taking away from the story. So here are my characters:
Francine Langstrom
Sebastian Faust
Indigo
Batgirl
So I think any of those characters could work well with the team and the storyline we’ve been seeing hence why I think they could appear. And while I know Batgirl already appeared I meant Steph or Cass. The others however I did have to do a little digging so here’s my logic...
Batgirl
Batgirl is really straight forward since we have 2 to choose from. Cass and Steph. They just feel like logical desicions to come out of Batman inc. as Jefferson called them. There is really no other though and I know Batgirl has been a member before sooo yeah.
Sebastian Faust
Faust is part of the magic side of DC which in my opinion is something we could see more of. We already know there's a bunch of magic users from the Misplaced episode so I don't think it could be much of a stretch. We could even see other members from justice league dark for all I know. I think that with just Zatanna and Dr Fate it could be good to introduce other magic users affiliated to the Justice League.
Simmilarly, Faust is linked to Markovia (granted its through a vampire invasion but still) and we know that with Brion still there it's going to continue being a huge part of the storyline going forward. More so because the light has agents in the government. So I think he could be a good option to have show up.
Indigo
Indigo is one of the many Brainiac iterations. So it could just go in a bunch of different directions. It could also indicate we' be exploring more about the superman family which would be great in my opinion. We have a lot of options since I think the writers won't go with the most obvious choice but I still think that this is perfect cause it crosses over with the legion of superheroes. Tell me some storylines you think could happen.
Francine Langstrom
Ok so in all fairness I'm not the most up to date on this character but from whaat I've found she could be a pretty good fit.
The Phantom Zone
Another point that I touched previously was the phantom zone was referenced with the words 'ghost pit' which seems too close in my opinion. Again this could be used to bring Wally back or... it could have a tie to the house of El. We could be seeing more growth there. It could also tie in with what the legion is going back to stop or to vandal savage if he starts employing criminals. It's likely that they could be employed or in alliance with the light as we keep seeing it grow. It could also be similar to how the light crossed the reach although I do believe it would be more likely to see the light hurt here as these are meant to be the absolute worst criminals Krypton had to offer. We could also see Kara and it could all depend purely on how she was raised after coming out of the phantom zone. This could give many different storylines but I think one that could be interesting is one where she-s raised by Darkseid. We’ve seen it with Superman previously so I don-t see it as a stretch. Besides it would give the writers a lot to work with.
Those are just a few thoughts and I have more considering time doesn't pass there but I'm unsure how it could play out since there are so many posibilities. Especially since I really think it will be coming into play I’m interested in seeing how it comes to be an important player. I think the writers have a lot of potential to make a remarkable storyline if used correctly.
The Doom Patrol
This is one I doubt will happen but I think we could come to see flashbacks or some variation. So ever since I saw Garfield have the flashbacks with the heroes they’ve lost I thought they were setting something up. But with it they also go ahead to talk about the Doom Patrol. I know that its in passing and while I don't think we'll have an entire season I believe we'll see more of them cause they're a huge part of Garfield. If anything we might get to see some of the members as they go through grief. I think it could fit in with season 4 cause while they are part of Gar's past they also have their own phantoms to get over. It could be an interesting dynamic if they take a simmilar approach as they do in the tv show. Where they are plagued by their past, they've lost their family and I think them grieving while trying to help other would be an interesting dynamic.

Are there any good vore stories or authors you would recommend? I need something to tide me over between updates of Heart Pangs.
Oooh man. I’ll try my best.
First off, there’s @maurice-dlt’s Heart Pangs AU, “A Rose By Any Other Name.” It’s a sort of fairy tale/fantasy style AU. They also wrote a one-shot for Heart Pangs, also on their Ao3.
I’ve also been really enjoying @philicheesecake’s series, The Unseen Legion. That’s mostly g/t. Has a lot of fearplay and some fatal stuff. It also has some pretty good worldbuilding stuff too!
If you like comics, I’m also a big fan of @downthehatchcomic (website here). Also g/t. A lot of fearplay and some… sorta fatal stuff. A little bit gory, but I loooove the main pred, great character design. Also some cool as heck fantasy stuff happening here.
If you don’t mind Eka’s, there’s the Devour series. It’s unfinished/inactive (of course) and it’s been a hot second since I re-read it, but I really love it. It’s kinda… Game of Thrones-y but with vore. Definitely more high fantasy. Same size. Some mature content. Oof a really good dynamic between the main pred guy and prey girl. Very “will he, won’t he eat her or…. or is he just gonna kiss her?” vibe.
Another Eka’s story I really liked is Jonathon’s Story. It’s also unfinished… but maybe not inactive? The author just added a new chapter after years of inactivity on the story so… who knows. I have yet to read said new chapter since I need to remember what already happened. But what I DO remember was it being very dark. Victorian setting. Dapper pred. Same size. Maybe some mature content? It’s been too long to remember. A good vibe between main pred and one of his servant girls. Also if you like this one, the author has a few chapters of a prequel story for Jonathon and a pretty good WTNV fic.
I hope these help!
#lol I hope these are the types of recommendations you were looking for#there’s probably some stuff I’m forgetting#asks

253. Sonic the Hedgehog #184
Chaos Angel
Writer: Ian Flynn Pencils: Tracy Yardley! Colors: Jason Jensen
As Enerjak and Super Sonic take off to begin their epic duel for the fate of the world, their clash causes an explosive beam of light to shine so brightly it's seen as far away as Albion (which, if you'll recall, is located somewhere around the area of modern-day England, whereas we're currently closer to New York), which Nicole barely raises the New Mobotropolis shield in time to deflect. Super Sonic snaps Enerjak's staff, and when Enerjak blasts him with a wave of deadly energy in response, he casually reminds him that in his Super form, he's totally invulnerable, making this essentially a stalemate battle between two living gods. Below, Julie-Su is shocked that Sonic survived the blast, but Locke is grumpy and hopeless, saying again that Sonic should have let him kill Enerjak with the Brotherhood's weapon while they had the chance.
It's amazing how clueless and callous Locke is here. I mean, I expected nothing more from him, really, especially given that he has yet to reach the point of redemption that he did in the M25YL timeline on his deathbed, but still, he doesn't even seem to show a single ounce of remorse that this is what his son has become. As the battle rages on, the Destructix watch from somewhere else on the island, and decide they definitely don't want to get caught up in it (which, really, I can't blame them).
Scourge reveals his supercharged warp ring, with enough energy to warp them to another zone entirely, and when Fiona expresses some doubt about leaving Mobius he merely reminds her that the ongoing battle is a battle for the fate of the world, and it's better for them to take their chances elsewhere. She decides to tag along for some "fun," which is after all the reason she left Sonic for Scourge, while Super Sonic continues to try to beat some sense into Enerjak above. He manages to get a yell of "crunch time" from him, giving him hope that his plan to bring Knuckles back is working, but it's not fast enough, making him worry. Julie-Su and Archimedes teleport to the Master Emerald's shrine, which has mysteriously been transported from the Chaos Chamber to become a small island floating in its own right at the edge of Angel Island (it's literally not explained at all how this happened, but I'm assuming it's Ian's creative license to once again make the world of the comics conform to that of the games a little more). They confront Finitevus, who merely states that even if he wanted to stop this, he couldn't by now, as the hex he put on the Master Emerald totally enslaved Knuckles' mind when he tried to tap into its power. He's uncertain about why the hex didn't affect Sonic when he transformed, but is mostly unconcerned, as his plans are proceeding regardless.
Finitevus, I don't think you understand one bit what actual heroes are like. Julie-Su and Archimedes immediately start arguing over which one of them will die in order to bring Knuckles back, with a baffled Finitevus looking on. Locke then rounds the corner, having arrived unseen, and announces that he, in fact, will sacrifice himself, finally regretting what he has brought on Knuckles with his actions in trying to protect him from the devastated future he foresaw. Finitevus, enraged, leaps forward to attack the three of them in an attempt to stop them, but Archimedes grabs onto him and poofs him away, leaving Julie-Su and Locke momentarily alone. Locke sadly looks down at Julie-Su, and explains that for all their extreme methods, in the end the Brotherhood really did love every single member, and only ever wanted the best for Knuckles. Julie-Su begins to cry as Locke takes his place atop the emerald, and begins reciting Tikal's prayer one last time.
Okay, I'm just gonna say it. As much as I genuinely liked Locke's deathbed scene in M25YL, I think this is a much better version of his death, narratively. It's also ten times more heartbreaking. The last time Knuckles ever spoke to his father, Locke hit him with a thinly-veiled threat to his family's safety, and Knuckles punched the screen and screamed at him in response. And now, without a chance to ever apologize or say goodbye, Locke is gone, having sacrificed his life to save his son. I have never doubted for a moment that Locke truly does love Knuckles and has always done everything with the best of intentions, which is precisely why I always felt he would make a better villain than a hero. The Sonic series, as much as I love it, is sorely lacking in three-dimensional villains, with most being either like Eggman - wanting to conquer the world - or Finitevus - wanting to watch it burn. Locke, as I've gone over before, would have been a fantastic antagonist. I think it very true that the best villains are the ones we can relate to in some way. Loving your child and wanting the best for them is very relatable to many people, and permanently messing up your child because of trying to do the best for them is a very real fear for the majority of parents. And Locke realizing this at the end of his life and then giving up said life for the sole purpose of undoing everything he helped to cause is the logical narrative conclusion of this character arc. Because of this, I think Ian ultimately writes Locke much better than did Kenders, despite Locke being based on Kenders' father (which is why I kind of feel bad even saying this, but eh, I've already made the argument that he should have been a villain, I don't think I can make it much worse from here). And as sad as this is, it just gets worse as Knuckles regains his right mind and returns to the ground, asking Julie-Su where his father is. Julie-Su merely starts sobbing and babbling incoherently about how she couldn't stop him, and just as horrible understanding begins to dawn on Knuckles, Finitevus returns through a warp ring, incensed that Locke stopped his plans after all. He yells that with his luck, Knuckles will even remember his time as Enerjak, to which Knuckles furiously replies that he remembers -
An exit fitting for one such as Finitevus. Julie-Su tentatively says that they should head back down to New Mobotropolis to let everyone know that the day's been saved, but Knuckles curtly cuts him off, refusing and claiming that as the last living Guardian of Angel Island, he's never leaving this island again, and he'll guard the Master Emerald alone for the rest of his life. And thus, we've finally come full circle. Knuckles started out as the lone Guardian of the island with no one else to help him, and now he's become such once again. Come on though, man, for real - your father sacrificed himself so you could have your own life free of the destiny he's forced on you, don't immediately try to isolate yourself!

Well, there's still one loose end we have yet to tie up - namely, the fate of the Dark Legion. While those who were happy to be free of their cybernetic trappings were transported to Albion, those who regret losing them have remained with Lien-Da, who now seeks the help of a mysterious figure to get her people's way of life back. Her speech is actually quite fascinating, because for basically the first time we actually get to see what a lifelong member of the Legion thinks of their own history, without immediately being made out to be a cackling evildoer. Turns out… their position is kind of reasonable.
I mean, I did just go over why Locke, and thus by extension the Brotherhood, are not really good people. I don't think they're evil - misguided, more like - but it's clear that in the end, extremism was the name of the game on both sides of the technology debate, and if anything both sides have only gotten more extreme over the past several hundred years. Ultimately, while the Dark Legion has absolutely employed some really messed up methods in their pursuit of their goals, their actual ideology is not unreasonable at all. In the end, they really were just a group of people who didn't want to tacitly accept being thrown back to the stone age by their government, and rebelled when said government - a literal theocracy, if you'll recall - created an entire goddamn task force operating outside of the normal legal system to try to drag them all into a world without technology regardless. I mean, literally, think about it right now - if your government, after a bad incident with one scientist going nuts and trying to seize power, in response decided to ban all technology and mandate that everyone had to regress back to a medieval lifestyle, how many of you reading this, right now, would just accept it and give everything up? And how many more of you would say "No way in hell is this okay" and join a revolution? Use technology in secret, rebel, fight for your right to live life as a modern human being with modern comforts? The Legion was twisted over time into a force that fought for all the wrong reasons, looking for power instead of freedom, but in the end, they were more wronged than anyone else in this whole debate, and absolutely had a right to be angry over the way they were mistreated.
Lien-Da, treacherous nature aside, clearly does believe in her people's way of life, and so she crafts a deal with her mysterious contact - if he makes her the Grandmaster of the Legion, a title which she feels she deserves after watching her late brother and the decrepit Dimitri take the reins before her, she'll join his cause and have her soldiers act as his new ground forces since his were destroyed by Enerjak. Gee, I wonder who this mysterious figure could be? Ah, what the hell am I acting all coy for, it's Eggman, naturally, and he's more than happy to accept this deal. However, to Lien-Da's incredulous disappointment, the position of Grandmaster has already been filled - by none other than Dimitri! Yeah, Eggman's given him some upgrades, turning his dreadlocks into bizarre tentacle-like appendages sticking out from his head bubble. Aw, yeah, Eggman, no need to give him a proper body or anything like that, just give him hair tentacles, it'll be fiiine!

A history of the Legion of Super-Heroes in comic book covers, part 4: And then things rebooted again. The 2004 Teen Titans/The Legion Special served as, kind of, an ending for the 2004 rebooted continuity and an introduction for the so-called “threeboot” team, who starred in the series that launched immediately afterwards. Unfortunately, even as that reboot was launching, DC re-introduced the team from the original continuity in Justice League of America and Justice Society of America because... oh, I have no idea, which eventually led to the 2008 mini Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds, which attempted to just sort everything out by putting them in different world and re-establishing the original team as the primary Legion once more; they showed up after that in Superman books and with a back-up strip in the relaunched Adventure Comics. It wasn’t until 2010 when they regained their own Legion of Super-Heroes comic -- once again written by Paul Levitz, who also took over Adventure Comics and turned it into a secondary Legion title in its entirety. (There was also a Legion of Super-Villains one-shot to launch a new storyline, oddly; I guess this is a sign DC was behind it?) When all of DC continuity was rebooted as The New 52 the next year, the Legion... wasn’t, oddly enough, although Levitz’ title was relaunched and given two siblings: Legion Lost, in which a Legion team was stranded in the 21st century, and the six-part Legion: Secret Origin, which set out the “unseen” stories behind the origin of the team, which was now retconned into something else even though continuity hadn’t been rebooted again, and... oh, I have no idea. Long story short, Both Legion and Legion Lost got killed within two years and the property essentially went dark for a few years, before Brian Michael Bendis revived it this year, with the two-part Legion of Super-Heroes: Millennium. And now you know! -- Graeme

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Long Way Home
[Goodreads]
Collects: Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight, #1–5 Since the destruction of the Hellmouth, the Slayers-newly legion-have gotten organized and are kicking some serious undead butt. But not everything's fun and firearms, as an old enemy reappears and Dawn experiences some serious growing pains. Meanwhile, one of the "Buffy" decoy slayers is going through major pain of her own.
Thoughts:
Spoiler-Free Thoughts:
If you haven’t watched Buffy, the tv show, then you need to and also this won’t apply to you? Now if you have and you haven’t started reading the comics, then you should. I’ve had the comics for so long but I wanted to finally read them, after I finished another rewatch. It was a great decision because I honestly love them! The art is cool and the familiar characters are great. A big difference is that the world really opens up here, but I think that is only the natural progression after the shows finale. You can’t just call tons of new slayers and expect it to stay the exact same. There are some changes in the relationships, but we’re still learning about that so I’m okay with it. Anyway, go read it because I’m going to now go to the spoiler section of the review!
Spoiler-ful Thoughts:
I loved it! The love the giant scale of it all, even Dawn (ha ha). As I was saying, it only makes sense that they’re some larger entity now because so many new slayers mean it’s not JUST about Buffy anymore. I mean, it is but now she’s dealing with all the new babies. It’s badass regardless, a giant slayer army. I also love an evil government storyline, so I’m excited to see where that goes.
Seeing Warren was gross. I’m not sure why they brought him back but it was gross regardless. I love Amy, even though she’s evil and annoying. She’s more interesting that way though. It was interesting seeing that pairing happen, and also them working with the government and the unseen Big Bad.
I’m not too sure how Buffy and her crew created this whole organization of slayers but it will, I’m sure, be slowly detailed over the story. I love Buffy though. I love her so much, and she’s her usual self so I’m pleased there. I love Willow, but there is more under the surface of her progression as a character that I don’t think we get to yet. I do like the Goddess world she went to under the stress of almost dying, etc. That was cool.
Dawn is so big, it’s confusing but also so funny. I’ve always had a soft spot for her so I’m glad she’s okay at least. Still a major dork, like Buffy, so thats nice. Xander is one of my least favorite characters in the show but so far he’s been okay! I think they’ve upped his maturity level so that’s nice. He might have said one or two dumb Xander-remarks but it’s a lot less than I expected.
I’m also excited about just learning more about new slayers, like the background ones we see. I’m excited to see a little more about Satsu and Renee! Excited to learn more about the Big Bad! I’m just the biggest Buffy nerd so I’m generally extremely excited!
I really loved the little stand alone story The Chain at the end of this collection. She’s one of the Decoy Buffys, and the other one is actually the “Buffy” in Italy that is talked about in season 5 of Buffy spinoff Angel. I’m pretty sure that was supposed to be the real Buffy but they went back with this comic and explained that away, which is perfect. The underground Decoy Buffy, though, oof! The emotions! It was such a powerful little arc. The power of names! The character’s bravery! The tragicness of it all! I loved it. Was super cool seeing an underworld type setting but I wished she could have lived. Womp womp.
Overall, loved!

The Doom Patrol is an odd team to give a show to. At this point, they’re probably best known in the popular consciousness for starting Beast Boy’s career and then dying. Repeatedly. But they’re kind of a big deal, both in continuity and as an artifact of comics history. Why? Well aren’t you glad we’re here to tell you!
The World’s Strangest Heroes are a dense, intricate bunch, but we’ve examined them closely and are happy to introduce you to them ahead of their arrival on DC Universe.
WHO IS THE DOOM PATROL?
Arnold Drake, Bob Haney and Bruno Premiani introduced the Doom Patrol in the pages of My Greatest Adventure in 1963. Titans did a surprisingly good job of summing the Doom Patrol up in the episode that introduced them. They’re the weirdos, the people with strange gifts whose abilities make them not international heroes like the Justice League, but a bunch of misfit freaks. Their tagline when they were introduced in 1963 was “...The World’s Strangest Heroes,” and it was accurate. This wasn’t a team of square-jawed supermen fighting for justice: it was a robot with the mind of a racecar driver and a guy who could shoot his radioactive soul out of his chest at the bad guys.
They were about as popular as you would expect: the team had their own series for a little more than 40 issues before being canceled. Drake, in what seems like a fit of pique at the books cancellation and its weird similarities to the X-Men (who arrived AFTER the Doom Patrol, it should be noted), killed off everyone. Everyone.
The book didn’t do much better the next two times it was trotted out: an almost entirely new team came out in the late ‘70s to no acclaim whatsoever, and again just after Crisis on Infinite Earths in the late ‘80s. It was two events in the ‘80s that kept the Doom Patrol in the public eye for the rest of comics history: Marv Wolfman and George Perez integrating Beast Boy, his Doom Patrol history, and some of his colleagues into the Teen Titans; and DC getting tired of another round of poor sales for a Doom Patrol relaunch and going in an extremely different direction.
Starting with issue #19 of volume 2 (the post Crisis edition), Grant Morrison and Richard Case took over Doom Patrol. This book, along with titles like Animal Man, Sandman, Hellblazer, and Saga of the Swamp Thing (among others) is responsible for the birth of Vertigo, the mature readers/semi-creator owned line of extremely influential DC books. Morrison’s run was as memorable as it was influential, and only its immediate follow up (by Rachel Pollack) and one relaunch attempt since has made any significant mark. In 2016, former DC Comics intern Gerard Way (whose claim to fame is being the lead singer of My Chemical Romance) launched Young Animal, a curated line of comics that included his and Nick Derington’s spiritual and in-continuity successor to Morrison and Pollack’s run.
WHO’S ON THE DOOM PATROL?
Your television Doom Patrol members include:
- Robotman - Cliff Steele, a racecar driver whose body was obliterated during the Indy 500. His brain was put into a robot body by the Chief, and now he has lots of varied robot powers, like self repair and super-strength.
- Negative Man - Larry Trainor, an irradiated test pilot who can shoot his radioactive soul out of his body. The radioactive soul can fly, cause explosions, go intangible, typical soul stuff.
- Elastigirl - Rita Farr is a gold-medal swimmer and actress exposed to weird volcano gases on a movie shoot that give her the power to grow or shrink. She thinks this makes her a freak.
- Crazy Jane - Kay Challis has 64 personalities, each of which has a different super power. She’s basically Legion.
- The Chief - Niles Caulder is a wheelchair-bound genius who’s also kind of an asshole.
- Beast Boy - Garfield Logan left the Doom Patrol to join Dick Grayson’s team in Titans, but before that he contracted a rare illness in Africa as a young child, and to cure it his father injected him with a serum that turned him into an immune monkey for a little while while the disease ran itself out. His parents later died. He’s probably better off.
- Cyborg - the only member of the upcoming show who has nothing to do with the Doom Patrol in any incarnation, Victor Stone had horrible damage done to his body by...different things according to which continuity (right now it’s a Mother Box accident), and he was turned into a cyborg by his genius scientist father. Vic is a Teen Titans mainstay, and since the New 52 relaunch, was also a founding member of the Justice League.
Other notable members include:
-Mento - Steve Dayton is uber wealthy, so he did what any rich guy might do: spent a ton of money on a weird helmet to give him psychic powers so he could impress an actress. Turns out it worked, though, and he eventually married Elastigirl and adopted Beast Boy.
-Dorothy Spinner - Dorothy has a physical deformity that makes her look like a chimp, so she wasn’t particularly social when she was younger. It was there that she discovered her power of making her imaginary friends real.
-Danny the Street - Literally a sentient street.
-Flex Mentallo - a 98 pound weakling who gained the power of Muscle Mystery, which let him rewrite reality if he flexed a certain way.
-Ambush Bug - Irwin Schwab is a teleporter who knows he’s a comic book character and is probably the most normal one from the “other notable members” section.
WHO ARE THE DOOM PATROL VILLAINS?
The main villains for the Doom Patrol are the Brotherhood of Evil. The Brain, a disembodied brain in a jar, is out to get revenge on the Chief for...well, it’s actually pretty justified. The Chief tried to kill the Brain so he could put the Brain’s mind in Robotman’s body. The Chief is pretty messed up.
He’s joined on the team by Monseiur Mallah, a supersmart gorilla with a huge machine gun and a beret; Madame Rouge, a shapeshifting stretchy lady; Animal-Vegetable-Mineral man, who can change any part of his body into anything animal, vegetable or mineral; General Immortus, a semi-immortal general with a grasp of tactics unseen by the world; and General Zahl, a former U-Boat captain.
Later incarnations of the Doom Patrol would fight variations on the Brotherhood like the Brotherhood of Dada, anarchists with insane powers who stole a painting that they then trapped the city of Paris in. They’d also fight Red Jack, a being with the power of God who thinks he’s Jack the Ripper and spends all day torturing butterflies in a hidden realm. They also faced off against the Scissormen of Orquith, who cut beings out of reality.
DOOM PATROL ONSCREEN APPEARANCES
- Titans of course. The weird team showed up a couple of times in DC Universe’s flagship series before it was announced that they were getting their own spin off.
- Teen Titans - The Doom Patrol was part of the inciting backstory for season 5 of the incredible TV predecessor to Teen Titans GO! The full Patrol crossed over with the Titans in the first two episodes of season 5, and the Brotherhood of Evil was that season’s overarching villain.
- Batman: The Brave & The Bold where the Patrol dies helping Batman fight off the Brotherhood of Evil.
- Young Justice: Outsiders. You really need to see this to believe it.
-inexplicably never in a video game, even though Negative Man is basically Noob Saibot and it wouldn’t have been that hard to make a stage in Injustice 2 Danny the Street. Or if they were really feeling ambitious, put a stage in the painting that ate Paris.
DOOM PATROL KEY STORIES
The Original Doom Patrol: The Drake/Haney/Premiani run is available as an omnibus edition or on DC Universe. This will give you a good foundation with the team, their world, and a taste of the weirdness that will come to define them. You can find that omnibus on Amazon.
Doom Patrol by Grant Morrison - this is where so much of their weirdness and influence comes from that it’s almost certainly the most important to read. Morrison and Richard Case introduce Crazy Jane, Red Jack, Danny, the Scissormen, the Beard Hunter, the Brotherhood of Dada, Mallah and Brain’s relationship, and more. This run is what defined the Doom Patrol for thirty years. The whole run is on DC Universe and you can also find it on Amazon.
Doom Patrol by Rachel Pollack - If you can find this, grab it. Pollack took the concepts Morrison introduced and went deeper into them. The issues are scanned and online, but not on DC Universe nor collected in print.
Literally nothing for 20 years after that - John Byrne and John Arcudi both tried to relaunch the book as a more traditional superhero book, but neither worked. The team has shown up a few times in the pages of Justice League, but those appearances tend to fit the tone of the crossover book rather than the spirit of the Doom Patrol.
Gerard Way and Nick Derington’s relaunch of Doom Patrol is very much in synch with Morrison and Pollack’s runs. It feels like a direct sequel, filtered through Way’s sensibility: hitting the same themes, but a little shallower and a little more bubblegum pop (as opposed to Morrison’s listening-to-someone-on-acid-play-the-sitar-style storytelling). Derington’s art is fantastic, though - definitely the best of the bunch. A chunk of it is on DC Universe and you can also buy it on Amazon.
Doom Patrol premieres on DC Universe on Feb. 15.

BRITANNIA TP VOL 03 LOST EAGLES OF ROME
Written by Peter Milligan Art by Robert Gill Cover art by David Mack
A terrifying new quest into the unknown! The Roman standard - the eagle borne at the front of each Roman legion - was more than just a symbol of the soldiers that carried it... It was a symbol of Rome itself, the ultimate embodiment of the empire's power... But now, in the mist-shrouded Germanic forest of Tottenwald, the unthinkable has happened: A rampaging barbarian horde has crushed three of Rome's most highly skilled detachments in battle...and captured their mighty Roman eagles. His authority threatened by this all-too-public shame, the mad emperor Nero has dispatched Antonius Axia, the empire's finest "detectioner" and hero of Britannia, and Achillia, the sword-wielding champion of the gladiatorial arena, to reclaim his stolen relics at any cost. But what began as a simple mission will soon become a terrifying journey into the dark heart of belief itself as the isolated woodlands of Rome's enemies reveal unseen dimensions...and the true power of the legion's lost eagles threatens to consume any who would pursue them... Valiant's sold-out descent into the horrors of the ancient world returns with an all-new volume from legendary comics master Peter Milligan (Detective Comics) and Harvey Award-nominated artist Robert Gill (BOOK OF DEATH) as Antonius Axia, history's first detective, launches into an otherworldly mystery of monsters, magic, and conspiracy at the boundaries of human understanding...
