Chaos Angel

As Enerjak and Super Sonic take off to begin their epic duel for the fate of the world, their clash causes an explosive beam of light to shine so brightly it's seen as far away as Albion (which, if you'll recall, is located somewhere around the area of modern-day England, whereas we're currently closer to New York), which Nicole barely raises the New Mobotropolis shield in time to deflect. Super Sonic snaps Enerjak's staff, and when Enerjak blasts him with a wave of deadly energy in response, he casually reminds him that in his Super form, he's totally invulnerable, making this essentially a stalemate battle between two living gods. Below, Julie-Su is shocked that Sonic survived the blast, but Locke is grumpy and hopeless, saying again that Sonic should have let him kill Enerjak with the Brotherhood's weapon while they had the chance.

It's amazing how clueless and callous Locke is here. I mean, I expected nothing more from him, really, especially given that he has yet to reach the point of redemption that he did in the M25YL timeline on his deathbed, but still, he doesn't even seem to show a single ounce of remorse that this is what his son has become. As the battle rages on, the Destructix watch from somewhere else on the island, and decide they definitely don't want to get caught up in it (which, really, I can't blame them).

Scourge reveals his supercharged warp ring, with enough energy to warp them to another zone entirely, and when Fiona expresses some doubt about leaving Mobius he merely reminds her that the ongoing battle is a battle for the fate of the world, and it's better for them to take their chances elsewhere. She decides to tag along for some "fun," which is after all the reason she left Sonic for Scourge, while Super Sonic continues to try to beat some sense into Enerjak above. He manages to get a yell of "crunch time" from him, giving him hope that his plan to bring Knuckles back is working, but it's not fast enough, making him worry. Julie-Su and Archimedes teleport to the Master Emerald's shrine, which has mysteriously been transported from the Chaos Chamber to become a small island floating in its own right at the edge of Angel Island (it's literally not explained at all how this happened, but I'm assuming it's Ian's creative license to once again make the world of the comics conform to that of the games a little more). They confront Finitevus, who merely states that even if he wanted to stop this, he couldn't by now, as the hex he put on the Master Emerald totally enslaved Knuckles' mind when he tried to tap into its power. He's uncertain about why the hex didn't affect Sonic when he transformed, but is mostly unconcerned, as his plans are proceeding regardless.

Finitevus, I don't think you understand one bit what actual heroes are like. Julie-Su and Archimedes immediately start arguing over which one of them will die in order to bring Knuckles back, with a baffled Finitevus looking on. Locke then rounds the corner, having arrived unseen, and announces that he, in fact, will sacrifice himself, finally regretting what he has brought on Knuckles with his actions in trying to protect him from the devastated future he foresaw. Finitevus, enraged, leaps forward to attack the three of them in an attempt to stop them, but Archimedes grabs onto him and poofs him away, leaving Julie-Su and Locke momentarily alone. Locke sadly looks down at Julie-Su, and explains that for all their extreme methods, in the end the Brotherhood really did love every single member, and only ever wanted the best for Knuckles. Julie-Su begins to cry as Locke takes his place atop the emerald, and begins reciting Tikal's prayer one last time.

Okay, I'm just gonna say it. As much as I genuinely liked Locke's deathbed scene in M25YL, I think this is a much better version of his death, narratively. It's also ten times more heartbreaking. The last time Knuckles ever spoke to his father, Locke hit him with a thinly-veiled threat to his family's safety, and Knuckles punched the screen and screamed at him in response. And now, without a chance to ever apologize or say goodbye, Locke is gone, having sacrificed his life to save his son. I have never doubted for a moment that Locke truly does love Knuckles and has always done everything with the best of intentions, which is precisely why I always felt he would make a better villain than a hero. The Sonic series, as much as I love it, is sorely lacking in three-dimensional villains, with most being either like Eggman - wanting to conquer the world - or Finitevus - wanting to watch it burn. Locke, as I've gone over before, would have been a fantastic antagonist. I think it very true that the best villains are the ones we can relate to in some way. Loving your child and wanting the best for them is very relatable to many people, and permanently messing up your child because of trying to do the best for them is a very real fear for the majority of parents. And Locke realizing this at the end of his life and then giving up said life for the sole purpose of undoing everything he helped to cause is the logical narrative conclusion of this character arc. Because of this, I think Ian ultimately writes Locke much better than did Kenders, despite Locke being based on Kenders' father (which is why I kind of feel bad even saying this, but eh, I've already made the argument that he should have been a villain, I don't think I can make it much worse from here). And as sad as this is, it just gets worse as Knuckles regains his right mind and returns to the ground, asking Julie-Su where his father is. Julie-Su merely starts sobbing and babbling incoherently about how she couldn't stop him, and just as horrible understanding begins to dawn on Knuckles, Finitevus returns through a warp ring, incensed that Locke stopped his plans after all. He yells that with his luck, Knuckles will even remember his time as Enerjak, to which Knuckles furiously replies that he remembers -

An exit fitting for one such as Finitevus. Julie-Su tentatively says that they should head back down to New Mobotropolis to let everyone know that the day's been saved, but Knuckles curtly cuts him off, refusing and claiming that as the last living Guardian of Angel Island, he's never leaving this island again, and he'll guard the Master Emerald alone for the rest of his life. And thus, we've finally come full circle. Knuckles started out as the lone Guardian of the island with no one else to help him, and now he's become such once again. Come on though, man, for real - your father sacrificed himself so you could have your own life free of the destiny he's forced on you, don't immediately try to isolate yourself!

Well, there's still one loose end we have yet to tie up - namely, the fate of the Dark Legion. While those who were happy to be free of their cybernetic trappings were transported to Albion, those who regret losing them have remained with Lien-Da, who now seeks the help of a mysterious figure to get her people's way of life back. Her speech is actually quite fascinating, because for basically the first time we actually get to see what a lifelong member of the Legion thinks of their own history, without immediately being made out to be a cackling evildoer. Turns out… their position is kind of reasonable.

I mean, I did just go over why Locke, and thus by extension the Brotherhood, are not really good people. I don't think they're evil - misguided, more like - but it's clear that in the end, extremism was the name of the game on both sides of the technology debate, and if anything both sides have only gotten more extreme over the past several hundred years. Ultimately, while the Dark Legion has absolutely employed some really messed up methods in their pursuit of their goals, their actual ideology is not unreasonable at all. In the end, they really were just a group of people who didn't want to tacitly accept being thrown back to the stone age by their government, and rebelled when said government - a literal theocracy, if you'll recall - created an entire goddamn task force operating outside of the normal legal system to try to drag them all into a world without technology regardless. I mean, literally, think about it right now - if your government, after a bad incident with one scientist going nuts and trying to seize power, in response decided to ban all technology and mandate that everyone had to regress back to a medieval lifestyle, how many of you reading this, right now, would just accept it and give everything up? And how many more of you would say "No way in hell is this okay" and join a revolution? Use technology in secret, rebel, fight for your right to live life as a modern human being with modern comforts? The Legion was twisted over time into a force that fought for all the wrong reasons, looking for power instead of freedom, but in the end, they were more wronged than anyone else in this whole debate, and absolutely had a right to be angry over the way they were mistreated.

Lien-Da, treacherous nature aside, clearly does believe in her people's way of life, and so she crafts a deal with her mysterious contact - if he makes her the Grandmaster of the Legion, a title which she feels she deserves after watching her late brother and the decrepit Dimitri take the reins before her, she'll join his cause and have her soldiers act as his new ground forces since his were destroyed by Enerjak. Gee, I wonder who this mysterious figure could be? Ah, what the hell am I acting all coy for, it's Eggman, naturally, and he's more than happy to accept this deal. However, to Lien-Da's incredulous disappointment, the position of Grandmaster has already been filled - by none other than Dimitri! Yeah, Eggman's given him some upgrades, turning his dreadlocks into bizarre tentacle-like appendages sticking out from his head bubble. Aw, yeah, Eggman, no need to give him a proper body or anything like that, just give him hair tentacles, it'll be fiiine!

The 4th Korean language studio album and 6th overall, I Got a Boy was released on January 1, 2013.  The album was generally praised by music critics, the musical elements combining R&B, New wave, and EDM.  the album was the second best selling album on the Gaon chart, just below labelmate EXO’s first studio album Growl (Kiss Version).  It also became their first of three (as of August 2018) to reach number 1 on the Billboard world Albums chart.  The album produced 2 singles: Dancing Queen and I Got a Boy.  

Dancing queen was the first single to be released, on December 21, 2012.  It was meant more of a preview then the main single.  The single was originally recorded in 2008 and was supposed to be the next single, but was scrapped because of copyright issues.  It was a remake of Duffy’s single Mercy.  Instead they released Gee, the song that sent them to megastardom.  The music video was mostly filmed back in 2008 and used again in 2012, with the first couple of scenes were for their next single I Got a Boy.  It was used to introduced I got a Boy which would premiere 11 days later.  The single peaked at number 1 on the Gaon South Korea chart, 2 on the Billboard K-pop Hot 100, and number 5 on the U.S. World digital songs (Billboard).  As of 2014, the single has sold over 1 million copies.  

I got a Boy was their second single released for this comeback, on January 1, 2013.  I Got a Boy is a mix between dubstep, EDM, and Pop-rap.  The song goes through many different genres, even having a small R&B break down during the bridge. The music video, is mainly a complication of the dance and images of a the girls meeting with a boy.  The music video is considered one of the most bright and colorful videos that had done up until than, with every color of the rainbow visible, and then some.  In less than 6 days, the music video reached 20 million views, the first k-pop video to achieve this at the time of it’s release. (Currently as of August 2018 the video has 211,108,286 views).   Domestically the single debuted at number 1 on the Gaon digital chart selling 1.3 million in 2013. At the end of the year, it had been the 13th, best selling single in South Korea.  On music show programs, the song won 6 awards (3 weeks in a row) on both M Countdown and Music Bank.  The single was the third best selling K-pop single in the United states, just behind Psy’s Mega-hit Gangnam Style, and Big Bang’s Fantastic Baby.  In nNovember, I Got a Boy won Video of the Year at the first Youtube music Awards, beating out not only Psy, but also Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga.  It was a controversial win, because Girls Generation wasn’t as well known in mainstream western audience as the other nominees were.  Because of the controversy they had a 327% rise in viewership.  The song is number #21 on the Billboard’s 100 greatest girl group songs of all time, the highest ranking K-pop song on the list (As of 2017).    

This was the final studio album with Former member Jessica Jung before her departure in 2014.

237. Sonic the Hedgehog #169

Order from Chaos (Part Two): The Great Harmony

Sonic races ahead through the nanite city, still searching for his father and Tails. He finds his father lying on the ground some distance ahead, and Jules informs him that with Tails delivered to A.D.A.M., he's been ordered to self-destruct, but since A.D.A.M. forgot to actually give him a time limit he's set himself to fall apart in about forty years, plenty of time for Sonic to free him from A.D.A.M.'s control. With his father relatively safe for the moment, Sonic presses on to the spire, where A.D.A.M. has begun to use the power of Shadow and Tails to draw every Chaos Emerald in the universe to him. Time to sound off! The green emeralds are of course from Mobius. The cyan emeralds are from Weeet, Car-heem's home planet from StH#23. The blue emeralds are from the Xorda's home planet, and the red, as we saw during Tossed in Space, from Thoraxia. The purple ones are from Teragosa 6, that utopian planet that E.V.E. ate in StH#128, and, from the same issue, the yellow ones are from the star that E.V.E. threw herself into afterward. And finally, the gray ones are from none other than Argentum, the Bem homeworld where Tails' parents still reside! Man, awfully convenient that every single variety of Chaos Emerald in the universe happens to come from places that Sonic has either visited or had some connection with, huh? With all the emeralds collected, they swirl around A.D.A.M.'s spire in multicolored loops - but he realizes that there's one emerald that still eludes his reach.

Well, but of course! It wouldn't be a Sonic canon without the Master Emerald, right? How interesting that Finitevus has shown himself to Locke, though… Sonic finally arrives on the scene, and A.D.A.M. reveals to him that Tommy is still alive under all the nanites, and fully conscious. Ah, so an "and I must scream" kind of situation, huh? Eggman is furious now that he's no longer directly cowering under A.D.A.M.'s gaze, and disowns A.D.A.M. as his son, leading A.D.A.M. to reveal his true reason for doing all of this: because he wants his daddy to love him. That's it. Seriously. He got Eggman to kill M because he felt he might love her more than him, as well. All this comes down to daddy issues. Sonic even lampshades just how ridiculous this is, that even Shadow doesn't angst like this. Sonic tries to attack A.D.A.M., but A.D.A.M. briefly lifts the nanites away from Tommy's head, revealing Tommy inside looking very disoriented and pained. Sonic hesitates to attack him, unwilling to hurt his friend to get to A.D.A.M., which of course, gives A.D.A.M. an opening to knock him aside. Eggman actually helps Sonic back to his feet, telling him to keep A.D.A.M. busy until his Egg Fleet can get here to blast him to bits. Sonic, however, not wanting Tommy to end up hurt, decides to turn things up a notch and go for the very tempting Giant Tower of Chaos Emeralds for a power-up.

While Super Sonic and Super A.D.A.M. start battling it out in the air, Eggman releases Shadow and Tails from their pods, with them having by now been forced into their Super and Turbo forms respectively by the power of so many nearby emeralds. Turbo Tails, realizing that he hasn't yet fulfilled his prophecy after all, recognizes that this is the Great Harmony and enlists Shadow's help to open a portal to a parallel zone to send the Chaos Emeralds there to safety, away from here.

Something special indeed! It's quite creative, actually, that Ian found a way to turn such a throwaway "Chosen One" thing into an actual plot device to help him with his clean-up detail. A.D.A.M. is furious at the loss of the gems, and Sonic tries to get him to let Tommy go and give up, but A.D.A.M. refuses… until the nanites around Tommy's head melt away, with Tommy having been finally able to wrest back control for a second. Sonic is overjoyed, but Tommy tells him that he won't have control for long, and apologizes for being so much trouble, as well as thanking Sonic for his kindness. The Egg Fleet arrives, and Tommy forces A.D.A.M. to fly towards it. Sonic tries to stop him, but it's too late, and the cannons fire, vaporizing both Tommy and A.D.A.M. in an instant. Sonic loses his Super form and floats to the ground, rather morbidly holding what's left of his friend in one hand.

Awww. Apparently Ian's decision to kill off Tommy here was because he wasn't a particularly popular character, and while I'll agree that he was kind of one-dimensional and uninteresting in his first few appearances, I had grown to like him as part of the team. At least in the end, he got to be a true hero, and took A.D.A.M. with him.

…for a Friend

I know it's not listed in my credits here, but Kenders actually inked and lettered for this story! I mentioned in his final issue as a writer than there was one more story he had involvement with, and this is it - as far as I've been able to find, he wasn't involved with any other stories from here on out. So I suppose, in a way, this is truly our final goodbye to Kenders!

Mighty, Ray, and Espio have all journeyed out to the former site of Charmy's home, the Golden Hive Colony, in search of any information on his family's whereabouts, with Vector providing assistance over the radio from Knothole. Mighty and Ray are mostly staying outside as lookouts, while Espio, with his superior stealth skills, sneaks into the giant structure that once housed the colony, but which has now been repurposed into one of Eggman's many bases. It's worth noting that up until now, Ray hasn't been a very well fleshed out character at all, but under Ian's writership he actually gains a pretty significant stutter. I'm not sure if the implication is meant to be that he just naturally stutters, or if his trauma led him to develop one, but either way, it's a small character detail that I appreciate. Anyway, Espio sneaks in, getting information on the location of the base's main computer from one terrified robot, and once he takes out the robots using said computer for Solitaire, Nicole helps him hack into it.

I love this. I think this is the first time the comic - or any Sonic canon, actually - has ever really gone into Eggman's reasons behind what he does. In most canons he is shown to genuinely value family to some degree, as he idolizes his grandfather and in the comics specifically likes to keep Snively close. That said, he is a sadist at heart, and someone being a blood relative is not enough for him to decide not to torture and murder them, as we saw with the disaster with the Overlanders in Robotropolis some time ago. Therefore, with most of his family gone, and Snively having some level of immunity as an underling, he finds his enjoyment in not only hurting the Mobians and other Overlanders that he's at war with, but in ensuring that even his own forces can be terrified of him. This is backed up by what Nicole finds in the computer's database.

With that, Espio sets the base to blow up and escapes before he's caught in it, much to Mighty and Ray's relief. He dodges their questions about why he destroyed it at first, until he curtly explains that since Eggman hurt his friend, he decided to hurt him back. Thus, the Golden Hive Colony is gone, but at least there's hope for some survivors to be found sometime in the future.

261. Sonic the Hedgehog #192

Metal & Mettle (Part 2)

As Sonic and Scourge face off against their Metal counterparts, Sonic urges Scourge to once again reconsider a truce so they can take out the robots first. Scourge dodges the question by pointing out that Sonic still hasn't given him an answer about teaming up permanently to take over the multiverse, and Sonic similarly dodges that question by saying they should take care of their current situation first. Meanwhile in Eggman's base, Dimitri approaches Eggman, who is currently whooping as he watches the video feed from his robots like it's a sports match, and coldly observes that while Eggman has apparently been able to build his robot doppelgangers in a matter of hours, he's still not bothered to get on with creating a new robotic army to supplement the Dark Egg Legion. Eggman brushes him off to continue cheering on said doppelgangers, which only makes Dimitri angry.

Dimitri, considering you revealed just a couple issues ago that you understand just how evil Eggman is, you had to know something like this was coming. He'd hardly be giving the Legionnaires free upgrades out of the goodness of his heart and just expecting them to stay loyal out of gratitude. A deflated Dimitri leaves the room, Eggman once again content to ignore him and continue watching his robot-hedgehog boxing match. Back at Freedom HQ, Sonic and Scourge struggle to keep up with their respective dancing partners, but Scourge is unwilling to call in the Suppression Squad to help even when Sonic urges him to. The Suppression Squad therefore continues to watch from the sidelines, and Miles points out that despite Scourge's downright villainous personality, Sonic continues to look out for him every time Metal Scourge tries to take him down.

This is what you get for commanding your subordinates through fear instead of earned respect, Scourge. They don't actually want to help you, they just don't feel like they have any choice. In the "Eggdome," which is apparently Eggman's new base of operations for the Legion, Dimitri finds Lien-Da and pulls her aside for a chat despite her irritation at being interrupted. When he informs her of the bombs inside their cybernetics, she's furious.

Yeah, Lien-Da, don't even try to blame Dimitri for this one. His reputation and intentions may not be spotless, but yours are far worse. Sonic finally convinces Scourge to bring in the Suppression Squad when they end up backed into a corner, and he reluctantly does so, with the Squad dispatching both robots in a matter of seconds. Miles slyly points out that in the brief fight he and Sonic worked "surprisingly well" together - anyone getting the impression he's thinking about defecting? Now that they're out of the fight, Scourge once again pesters Sonic for an answer to his offer, to which Sonic finally reveals that the reason he hesitated before was because he was so disgusted by the thought that he couldn't even speak. Yeah, sounds about right. Knowing he wouldn’t be able to take on the whole occupying force at once, Sonic cheerfully "extends their lease" on Freedom HQ until he's rested up, and takes off back for New Mobotropolis. Once there, he has to face Elias, who scolds him for having run off against the orders of the council, though he admits he personally didn't have a problem with Sonic's decision.

Turns out, this new mission involves a new set of star posts that Rotor and Tails have whipped up in short order, which will take Sonic straight to Moebius. After all, since Scourge and his cronies have taken one of their bases, why not look into taking one of his? Sonic, of course, is pleased, though he then pulls a terrifying smile that barely even looks like it should come from the pencils of the otherwise-exemplary Tracy Yardley. Seriously, dude, normally your Mobian faces are so good, how did something like that happen?

Later that night, Scourge sneaks into the city himself and enters Sonic's house through an open window, looking to give him a surprise beating in bed. However, unfortunately for all the excited shippers whose hearts just jumped up a hundred beats a second, Jules is sitting in an armchair in the living room, and curtly informs Scourge of who he is. Scourge seems mostly amused to be meeting his alternate-universe father, and is even more amused when Jules says that he's not afraid of Scourge, and points out that he's sacrificed himself for his son before and won't hesitate to do it again. He's less amused, however, when Jules calls him a coward and chastises him for having thrown his own world into chaos over his selfish desires.

Is… is Scourge implying that he murdered his own father? Look, we've already seen before that Scourge isn't exactly averse to killing someone, even when they're unconscious and defenseless, but killing his father in cold blood, his own father who is presumably a good and pacifistic person from his own description, is on a whole 'nother level. Jules, refusing to be intimidated, stands up and mocks Scourge for apparently having to sneak up on Sonic at night to get an advantage despite being such a badass conqueror, before telling him that even if he isn't sad over his own father's death, Sonic will be, and he doesn't intend to go quietly if Scourge comes after him.

Struck a nerve there, I see. I'll note that it's never actually outright confirmed if Scourge killed his father or not, it's left deliberately ambiguous. Though his dialogue does seem to imply that he did, his reaction here makes me lean toward thinking he didn't. If I had to guess, I'd say that at some point his father died of other causes, or maybe even died in some kind of accident that Scourge caused, making him indirectly responsible. Remember, Scourge is an inverse of Sonic - he's not the total opposite, but rather a mirror image, driven by his most negative traits while Sonic is driven by the positive. Sonic himself has trouble processing his own emotions, especially those relating to grief and loss, so I can only imagine how much worse Scourge is about it. With that in mind, I could easily see Scourge trying to mask his grief over his father's death by not only pretending not to care, but going so far as to act like he hated his own father and is now glad he's gone. Hell, he doesn't even have to pretend - it's likely he's convinced himself of this entirely, and hasn't even thought about it in depth until this world's Jules called him out on his cowardice and hypocrisy. I can't really see another reason why his words would suddenly make Scourge deflate and start crying while walking away without even a proper retort. Scourge, under Ian's writership, has ended up becoming one of those fascinating characters who doesn't really deserve a redemption arc, but is interesting enough to a wide selection of readers that people want him to get one anyway. Certainly, even as an unrepentant villain, he's a fun one for sure.

Mogul Rising (Part One: Needful Things)

Mina is finally back from her world tour, having returned to New Mobotropolis rather than Knothole for obvious reasons. Sonic meets her at the airstrip to welcome her and Ash back, and she informs Sonic that she and Ash have discussed some important things while they were away. Ash reluctantly but sincerely apologizes to Sonic for his jealous behavior in the past, saying that it came from a place of truly caring for Mina and worrying about Sonic's influence in her life, and Sonic likewise apologizes for being an insensitive jerk at times. Back on good terms, Ash leaves to go check things out in the city, while Mina insists Sonic accompany her to the site of Knothole's ruins so she can see it with her own eyes. 

Mina is happy, to see Freedom HQ still standing, though currently in the process of being rebuilt due to the damage Eggman's attack caused. Sonic reassures her that there's still a room for her and Ash to stay in if they want despite not being Freedom Fighters, and they enter, greeting Mighty and Tails, who are helping to fix up the roof of the main room. Sonic and Mina enter the lab to find Nicole on screen, calling Sonic back to New Mobotropolis, as apparently, Mammoth Mogul wants to meet with him in the prison. Sonic reluctantly heads back to speak with him, and Mogul wastes no time in arrogantly demanding that Sonic surrender to him, as he claims they find themselves in a "stalemate." Obviously, Sonic finds the idea laughable, as Mogul is currently contained within a cell that blocks all his magical and psychic powers.

I mean, Mogul, can you really blame him for not taking you seriously? The vast majority of people are not gonna find any threats very convincing when they're made from within a cell. That night, Nack irritably talks about how annoying he finds Sonic's attitude, and when Mogul says he's about to be vicariously vindicated then Nack reminds him that Sonic is right and none of them are really about to go anywhere. Mogul simply informs Nack that he's had the foresight to make plans for exactly a situation such as this years in advance, and "marked" several individuals so they can be contacted by his psychic powers even from behind his cell walls. I'm… not sure how that would really work given that the walls are supposed to block all psychic abilities, but sure, whatever! First, he calls out to Mina, reminding her of a memory he erased from her a year ago - that when she was running for her life in Eggman's retaking of Robotropolis, he had projected a vision of himself to give her her powers of speed before removing that part of her memory to create an effective sleeper agent. She "lost her way" when she only used her powers to try to grow closer to Sonic, but now he's finally ready to use her for his own purposes. Second, he calls out to Mighty. We already know a bit of his past, like being imprisoned in the slave labor camp when he was a child, but now we get a little more insight into his backstory and how he ended up alone without his family in the first place.

Well, how fascinating! Somewhere out there, it seems Mighty has a sister, as well as criminal parents locked up in a jail. This is important information, as it comes into play in some plotlines later on. Finally, we have none other than Tails, whom he of course marked when he was holding him prisoner as Turbo Tails while the sentient duplicate took his place. The three individuals wake up, brainwashed and with green diamonds on their foreheads to symbolize their mental enslavement, and simultaneously head for Sonic's room - hey, good thing for Mogul that his three marked subjects and his target are all sleeping in the same general area, right?

The three brainwashed friends tell Sonic as one, in Mogul's voice, that he was warned, leaving Sonic to face off against them and try to find a way to bring them all back without hurting them…

Misfit Badniks: The Salty, Soggy Sequel

Welp, we've finally reached Michael Gallagher's final story in the comic! Obviously he hasn't been head writer for many years now, but unlike other former head writers, he's come back every once in a while to contribute a story here and there, presumably just for old times' sake. However, this is his final story - after this, we won't be seeing any more of him. While his silly style isn't much to my taste, and I've definitely had certain problems with his writing, overall he did guide the comic through its earliest years and was the driving influence behind how the preboot's story, world, and characters started out, and I think he deserves a fair bit of respect from that alone. So with that, let's read Michael's final story and say our goodbyes!

So if you'll remember from his penultimate story, the Island of Misfit Badniks has been deliberately sunk to the bottom of the sea so that the badniks and Pseudo-Sonic could continue their evil plans undisturbed. We find out that apparently, Pseudo-Sonic was equipped with a switch that would allow him to grow to an enormous size, so the other badniks flipped it and allowed him to grow outside their submerged island, before getting to work repairing him so he would be operational again. Personally, I think it would be a much better plan to repair him before making him bigger, so you would have to use far fewer materials in the repair process… Anyway, I'm sure you already have an inkling, given the setting, of who's about to come along to save the day. It's the Forty Fathoms Freedom Fighters, of course, ready to murder some more sentient beings, because that's what they do! Several of the badniks charge in to fight them, while the others retreat to speed along their repairs on Pseudo-Sonic so he can defeat the F.F.F.F. properly.

After a bit of fighting, all combatants find themselves being smacked aside by a giant metal-gloved hand, and the gigantic Pseudo-Sonic arrogantly claims that as the biggest thing on the planet, he declares war on all of Mobius! Unfortunately, he's forgotten that there's one last member of the F.F.F.F. that still has yet to show up…

Beautiful. Fluke orders his friends to sweep all the badniks into a pile while he rips the head off of Pseudo-Sonic's metallic corpse for no reason, because really, I cannot overstate enough how bizarrely bloodthirsty these guys are. He then uses his tail to compress Pseudo-Sonic, the badniks, and the artificial island into a single, small cube of metal that can be easily disposed of. With that, the F.F.F.F. make a few last water-related puns, and the story is over. Goodbye, Michael - we've had some good times, and we'll miss your silly style!
