Digital Detox Shaina Tranquilino August 20, 2024
Evan had always been plugged in. A software engineer by trade and a tech enthusiast by nature, he spent his days coding complex algorithms and his nights surrounded by screens—one for gaming, another for streaming, and a third for monitoring the latest cryptocurrency trends. His smartphone was his constant companion, a lifeline to the digital world where he thrived. Notifications pinged incessantly, each one demanding a slice of his attention.
But lately, something had shifted. Evan found himself restless and irritable, his mind never quiet. The world around him, once so vibrant in pixels, had started to feel hollow. He couldn’t remember the last time he had a face-to-face conversation without checking his phone, or the last time he sat in silence without feeling the need to fill it with noise. So, when a colleague mentioned a digital detox retreat nestled in the mountains, Evan signed up on a whim.
The retreat was a stark contrast to Evan’s life in the city. No Wi-Fi, no cell service, and certainly no screens. Instead, there were endless forests, star-filled skies, and a strict rule: all devices were to be surrendered at check-in. Evan felt a pang of anxiety as he handed over his phone, but it was accompanied by an unexpected sense of relief.
The first day was difficult. Without the constant buzz of notifications, Evan felt adrift, his thoughts chaotic and loud. But as the hours passed, something began to change. He started noticing the things he had been too busy to see—the rustling of leaves in the wind, the rich scent of pine, the warmth of the sun on his skin. Conversations with fellow retreat-goers were slow and meaningful, unhurried by the pressure to respond to the next message or email. For the first time in years, Evan slept without the glow of a screen beside him, and when he woke up, he felt truly rested.
By the end of the retreat, Evan had found a peace he hadn’t realized he was missing. The constant need to be connected, to be always doing something, had given way to a quieter, more contemplative state of mind. As he packed his bags, he knew he couldn’t go back to the life he had been living.
When Evan returned to the city, everything felt different. The towering skyscrapers and neon lights seemed overwhelming, but not in the way they used to excite him. He felt a pull toward simplicity, a yearning for the peace he had found in the mountains. Slowly, he began to make changes. He turned off his notifications, limiting his screen time to essential tasks. Weekends became reserved for nature walks and reading physical books, activities that grounded him in the present moment.
He also started spending more time with people—really being with them, not just sharing space while distracted by screens. He reconnected with old friends and even joined a local gardening club, something he never would have considered before the retreat. The digital world, once his entire universe, was now just a small part of a much larger, more fulfilling life.
Evan’s colleagues noticed the change. He was calmer, more focused, and somehow more content. When they asked what had happened, he simply smiled and told them about the retreat, about the quiet joy he had found in disconnecting. Some of them laughed, calling it a phase, but Evan knew better.
His life was no longer dictated by the relentless pace of technology. He had found a balance, a way to integrate his love for tech with the simple pleasures of living. For the first time in a long time, Evan felt truly alive. The world was vibrant again, not just in pixels, but in every breath, every moment, every connection made face-to-face.

It's my first day off Facebook. Honestly people are being intentionally triggering and I can't deal with that and the religious nutjobs. Next week, it's tiktok being uninstalled. As silly as it sounds, I'm looking forward to this 'winter arc' of living slow, unplugged and intentional. I will rely on tumblr again for the time being when I absolutely need scroll time. Aside from that, I want to devote time to the gym and modifying our little home for the winter.

If all the electronics devices would stop
If for some weird reason if all the electronics devices would stop working this is how my life or a page from my diary would be. 4:00 AM:Woke up at my usual time. Why? Because even without the internet, my body insists on torturing me with early mornings. By 4:15, I’m at my desk. No emails to check, no mindless scrolling through social media, no digital cat videos. I just stare into the void…

Yesterday morning, I noticed that it's really better to go to work without earphones. You can hear the sounds of the wind, rustling grass, cars driving by, and people's voices. It makes you calm, unlike music or podcasts. You become mentally healthy without any rush. You can connect with nature.

Your life without a computer: what does it look like? Without a computer, my life would be totally different! First of all, I’d have to say goodbye to binge-watching Netflix and endless YouTube rabbit holes. Instead, I’d probably spend more time outdoors, maybe take up a new hobby like painting or hiking. Socializing would become a lot more old-school. No more WhatsApp chats or Zoom calls; it’s…

Boy who licks his bass Girl who kisses her guitar You don't even know my name, but I trust you with my heart This boy is a habit I can't get rid of, no
Everyone smokes here Everyone drinks here, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't You want me to be as reckless as you but I can't 'cause of the meds, I can't 'cause of the meds
The rockstar life is not for me I'm the cat the kid is playing with Boy who licks his bass Girl who kisses her guitar, call me Miss Big Blue Eyes
Everyone smokes here Everyone drinks here, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't You want me to be as lonely as you but I can't 'cause of the meds, I can't 'cause of the meds
And this heedless romance will drive me insane I'm an ignorant, still I can make it rain No introduction to your stupid friends, I just wanna make music, leave this party
I know I'm supposed to be the leader But they take the authority away from me And the smell of whatever shit they're smoking makes me feel small Like I'm a kid trapped in a 19 year old's body

Grateful by Candlelight Shaina Tranquilino November 10, 2024
The Hollows were a typical tech-savvy family. Their lives revolved around screens—Dad was always on his laptop, Mom scrolling on her phone, and the kids, Mia and Oliver, forever lost in their tablets. Dinners were quiet affairs, with the glow of devices lighting up their faces more than the laughter they used to share. One Friday evening, as the autumn winds howled outside and the sun dipped below the horizon, the house suddenly plunged into darkness. The power was out. For a few moments, everyone stayed frozen, staring at their darkened screens.
"Mom! My game! I was about to win!" Oliver groaned, his voice breaking the silence.
"I have a work call in twenty minutes," Dad mumbled, tapping his laptop screen as if it would magically turn back on.
Mom sighed, reaching for her phone. "No signal. We’re stuck."
Just then, Mia, the oldest, found an old candle in the cupboard. She lit it, and a small, warm glow filled the room. Shadows danced across their faces, softening the usual lines of stress. They gathered around the flame, a strange kind of excitement flickering in their eyes.
"Well, since there’s no internet," Mom said, "let’s just… talk?"
Everyone looked around, a little unsure, but no one reached for their devices.
"What’s one thing you’re grateful for?" Mia suggested, thinking back to an exercise her teacher had taught them in class.
They all looked at each other, surprised by the idea.
"Um… I guess I’m grateful for… well, this break," Dad started, setting his laptop aside. "Maybe I’m too attached to that thing."
"Agreed!" Oliver laughed. "I’m grateful that we finally have time to, you know, hang out. Without screens."
One by one, each family member shared something they were thankful for: a good grade, a fun weekend at the lake, even little things, like warm blankets and rainy days.
Soon, the room filled with laughter and stories. They talked about old memories and new dreams, things that had gotten buried beneath their busy, plugged-in lives. Mia shared a funny story about her friends, and Oliver told a dramatic version of his soccer game. Mom laughed until her sides hurt, and Dad leaned back, his face relaxed and open, free from the usual glow of his screen.
As the hours passed, the candle burned lower, its light casting a gentle, flickering warmth over them. They weren’t sure when the power would return, but they found themselves hoping it wouldn’t—at least, not for a while.
That night, as they lay in bed, the Hollows felt different. A little closer. A little lighter. And for the first time in a long time, they were grateful—not for things they could touch or scroll through, but for the simple, quiet company of each other.
