Laying down by his side, I run my fingertips on his jaw, alongside the curve of his ear and on the edge of his lips… He winces when I pass by a spot right under one cheekbone.

“What is it?” I rise on my elbow to take a closer look. It is only then I notice the small cut on his face and the reddened skin around it. ���Did you cut yourself shaving?”

“Yeah.”

“Does it hurt?” I ask. “Did it bleed a lot?”

“Not really,” says Peeta. “Just a drop maybe.”

I don’t bother explaining to him that him and blood do not mix well together in my head, no matter its quantity. But he cracks open an eye to see my expression. “Katniss,” he says softly, with an edge of amusement in his voice, “it is nothing.”

I sigh and place a kiss an inch apart from the cut. I feel the corner of his lips move under mine, forming a smile. “You are just giving me a reason to nick myself more often. You know that, right?”

“How about one kiss for the side with a cut on it,” I say. “And ten for the side without any?” I place a hand under his jaw and turn his head from side to side, examining it for other scars. Then, without waiting for an answer, I start placing kisses haphazardly. On his temple, on the side of his nose, finally on his lips…

“Yeah, I can live with that,” he whispers against my mouth.

For all that Anne could not claim any romantic experience—not any mutually romantic experience, at least—she knew what was coming.

A lot of it was hope. Hope she shouldn't be harboring, at that. She knew where she stood; she could never hope to compete with the young woman Gilbert had accompanied to the fair. It just wasn't possible.

And yet, the way Gilbert was looking at her said very differently. He was moving in, seeming very sure but giving her time to back away. Maybe he wasn't so sure. Maybe he was trying to find out.

If there's one thing worse than never knowing, it's going to be knowing and losing him anyway.

Anne leaned back just a little, putting her hand up in a clear signal for Gilbert to stop. Gilbert raised both of his hands to take it, but Anne refused to let it drop.

"Anne..."

Oh God, she should never have let their friendship get as close as it had. She could hear the plea in his voice, and it was going to break her resolve if she didn't end this here and now. "Gilbert, I—"

Anne had had every intention of being firm, but words deserted her entirely for a moment as Gilbert leaned in and pressed an entirely too tender kiss to her palm. He lowered their hands, and Anne was too stunned to do anything but let him. She could feel tears gathering and her throat tightened.

"Anne," Gilbert said gently, "please, say something. I thought..."

Neither of them could actually get the words out. If they couldn't do that, then what hope was there, anyway? "I can't, Gilbert. I can't and you can't and if you don't understand that, then..." Then what? There truly was no hope? Maybe he wasn't who Anne thought he was? Or maybe Anne wasn't who she thought she was?

In any event, it was going to be easier to weather the heartbreak if she did it now, she thought, pulling her hand from Gilbert's before getting up and fleeing inside.

She'd keep telling herself that until she could forget how he held onto her hand until the last possible second.

Maybe then, she'd be able to believe it.

Here’s a snippet of a new In the Kitchen chapter (a growing back together throwback) because writing pregnancy is kicking my ass and I needed something lighter this week:

“Ten more minutes,” Katniss groans.

I let out a laugh. “You can sleep as long as you want, I’m just going to get started on breakfast.”

Instead of rolling away, she grabs a fistful of my shirt and burrows her face further into the crook of my neck. Is it possible she meant…ten more minutes with me?

“I can give you five minutes, then I really have to knead the dough downstairs,” I say.

“Eight,” she counters.

“Six and a half, final offer.”

I feel her breathe a soft laugh against my skin. “Fine.”

“Can’t believe I out-bartered Katniss Everdeen, big day for me,” I say.

“Shhh,” Katniss hushes as she reaches her hand up and lazily runs it against my cheek. I press my lips to her palm absentmindedly before considering whether I really should or not.

WIP Wednesday ~ WIP File Game

Um hi there. *waves nervously* Soooo over the past two months, I've been tagged multiple times by different people to partake in various WIP Wednesday posts and WIP file games. Sadly, I haven't had as much time for fandom as I would have liked recently, and I've just let those tags sit there unanswered. Thank you for thinking of me @mega-aulover, @unnamednarrator, and @thesweetnessofspring.

I'm going to use this post to answer both types of tags, and the people I tag in turn, please choose which version you'd rather play, play both!, or play neither.

First... a snippet from chapter 40 of Spellbound:

“Peeta! Let me go!” There’s the metallic thunk of a heavy round. Hands yanking on my wrists. I stare at the body. His jaw blown off, silencing him forever. Eyes empty. Hollow. Gone. “Peeta?” That’s when the trembling starts. I blink and the shadows recede. His face gone, replaced with Haymitch’s skull gleaming oddly in the flashlight on the cave floor. The jawbone fallen at an odd angle.  Fingers dig into my wrists. Deep enough that it hurts. The pain in my wrists and my knee somehow grounds me. Pulls me away from that day in the sun baked streets and back into this one. “Peeta?” Katniss asks. I can barely make out her shape in the gloom, and I shake my head. Who dropped the flashlight? When did we wind up on our knees?  “I’m fine.”

And now for the more difficult part. Here's a list of my current WIP files. If it's listed as a story on AO3, I hope to finish it this year. If it's listed as not yet posted to AO3, then I'm hoping to start posting it/finish it this year. The third list is a bunch of random ideas that may never see the light of day, but I've included them for funsies.

26. Do you ever "prep" your fics with outlines or warmups before you start writing, or do you just dive right in?

Depends… sometimes it’s a one-shot that gets expanded, in which case maybe no outline. Otherwise maybe a loose outline or vague idea of where I’m going? But usually there’s an element of just going for it 🤷‍♀️

Ooh, favorite character to write? That one definitely changes depending on the fandom.

Anne from Anne With an E is probably my easiest to write favorite. I was very much like her as a child minus her particular brand of familial trauma.

As for the rest of the fandoms I write fic in, here's a quick rundown:

Fullmetal Alchemist: Riza Hawkeye. She's got a lot going on inside her head, I think.

The Dragon Prince: Rayla, because she deserves all the good things.

Lockwood & Co: Much as I want to say Lucy, it's Lockwood. His particular brand of melodrama is too fun!

the very first time was when i wrote nim's island fanfiction aged 7-8 years old for myself lmao. then i started writing it again (and posted it for the first time) in high school when i was obsessed with les mis, again at uni when i couldn't stop thinking about anne with an e, and now here we are and i'm a little hunger games bitch (which i also was at 12 but i wasn't really interacting with fanfics at that time)

🎲 what stops you from writing more in your free time?

my other hobbies and also the fact that 90% of my writing process takes place in my brain. i just have to fucking think about what i'm going to write for weeks on end. luckily tho that means when it comes to actually drafting, it gets on the page pretty quickly
