Univision’s elDetector project has worked for months to fact-check Donald Trump’s dangerous lies about abortion, immigration, and the January 6 insurrection. During an October 16 Televisa Univision town hall with the former president, journalist Enrique Acevedo — who in 2023 faced criticism for his interview with Trump — will also have the chance to push back against Trump's misinformation by fact-checking the GOP presidential candidate in real time. 

The event will also be an opportunity for Univision to restore trust among its viewers after concerns that the network’s corporate owners, Televisa Univision, have made attempts to become friendly with the former president, with whom the network had cut business ties in 2016 after a series of racist remarks against Mexicans. In 2023, the Washington Post reported that “Trump is treating Univision and its new corporate owners like long-lost friends” and that “he hosted a trio of its executives at Mar-a-Lago” during his interview with Acevedo.   The town hall will broadcast out of Miami and will be followed by a dueling town hall with Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday, October 10. Univision and its streaming service ViX will air the town halls with a Spanish translation, with the full English-language version available on the Noticias Univision YouTube channel.

Univision’s elDetector has fact-checked Trump before

Univision’s elDetector, an online Spanish-language fact-checking project launched ahead of the 2016 presidential election, has spent the last several months pushing back against Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric, his false and racist attacks against Harris’ identity, his fearmongering about Democrats’ position on abortion, and his distortions about the January 6 insurrection. 

Univision has an impeccable record of fact-checking Donald Trump. Will they do so at the town hall?

Univision is laying into the United States for this shit show at the gates and going on about how this cannot happen in two years for the World Cup, and they are right and should say it even louder.

The commentator even mentioned the US being so concerned for one person's safety that they forgot to make sure the thousands in the stadium were safe.

10 fun facts about my childhood/teenage self:

I learned (and still know) how to play piano, marimba, and various percussion instruments (ex. snare drum, drumset, etc)

My most-eaten food until college was peanut butter sandwiches (honestly, I feel like I averaged 1-2 a day)

In high school, I got paid to perform "Love is an Open Door" as Hans (my friend was Anna) for a child's birthday party

I bought my first laptop from my hometown priest

In like 5th grade, I unfortunately got a really bad haircut once and my family and I agreed not to take photos of me until it grew out (so there's like literally no photo evidence, but it sucked and I def cried lol)

Two friends and I had a YouTube channel in middle school where we would do sketch/improv comedy

In high school, I did an internship with Univision, got to help do lighting production for the 2015 Premios Juventud award show in Miami, and ~technically~ worked for artists like Pitbull, J Balvin, Maluma, Karol G, and Fifth Harmony

I was really into music mashups to the point where I taught myself how to use music software and made a ton of mashups of my own

In middle school, I once won a hula hoop competition

I decided on a somewhat whim to run for senior class president in high school and won, becoming the first Latinx president in my school's history(!!)

Donald Trump was scheduled to deliver a “special guest” keynote speech at a “Defend the Second Amendment” event hosted by the National Rifle Association (NRA) in Savannah, Georgia next week, but has pulled out. “NRA members and gun owners will gather in support of Second Amendment rights, and attendees will hear from NRA leaders and gun rights champions about what the outcome of the November elections means for Constitutional freedoms,” a press release noted, the Savannah Morning News reported last week. The paper now reports the “cancellation is due to a campaign scheduling conflict.” The cancellation comes after a difficult town hall in Miami, hosted by Univision, featuring undecided Latino voters. It also comes after the first two days of early voting in Georgia broke records. More than half-a-million people have cast their ballots already, which the Secretary of State’s Office described as “massive numbers.”
