"Teach Away Review"
Teach Away review OISE University of Toronto TEFL review, submitted by Irma. The OISE TEFL course was designed by OISE University of Toronto TEFL and is delivered by Teach Away. It’s a weird relationship from my point of view. I mean, why not just have OISE TEFL at the university deliver it? But, Teach Away does an excellent job and it is also the employment arm of the course. This means that…

Access Pass to Life
Posted Sept 25
Privilege is a loaded word with many different interpretations. To me, privilege is like an access pass that you’re born with. It’s something you can’t really change, but should acknowledge. For example, when I was born I had this access pass: white, middle-class, Canadian citizen, healthy and able-bodied. Over time other things get added to the access pass – university education, English speaking, young. This access pass is invisible to many people. But it allows you to access and do things that some people cannot. For example, my Canadian passport allows me to visit most countries in the world. My father, who has both a Canadian and Iraqi passport – cannot go to many countries if he uses his Iraqi passport. My Canadian citizenship will allow me to pursue TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) after graduation. For many, even if they are fluent in English, cannot work in certain countries if they are from anywhere but North America. Our skin colours, gender, ethnicity, and so on, affect how the world perceives us and unfortunately, treats us. To acknowledge that you do have privilege, when you do, is an important aspect of connecting to others in nature interpretation.
For example, this summer I worked at an all-boys summer camp in the Georgian Bay. For most of the summer, the camp was occupied by white children from upper-class families in Toronto. Before camp started however, we had 2 school groups attend where there was more diversity – it was co-ed, and students came from many different backgrounds. Being an instructor for the school groups was a very different experience than regular camp. Some children I could tell, had rarely been outside before this experience. They were terrified of bugs, wore full bug suits and were very anxious about being outside. To play this off as individual “quirks” would not have been effective. I had to acknowledge and understand where my students were coming from, in order to make their experience fun and enjoyable. To simply say – “we’re outside, this is just how it is and you’ll have to deal with it,” would not have been effective and would do nothing to connect with the students. Making sure everyone is comfortable and explaining why there are so many bugs in the area, why we need bugs in the area, and how to avoid them as best we could, was a much more useful technique.
Working well in nature interpretation means that you should never assume. Never assume that your group knows how to do certain things, or is comfortable in certain environments. Your job is to make sure you understand your audience to the best of your ability. Even if you’re not able to do this fully, you should make provisions and model your program so that everyone has the best experience possible. It’s easier to ignore the privilege you carry, but if you do, you will never be able to put yourself in other’s shoes and relate to them on a deeper level. As nature interpreters, I think we should aim to make nature accessible to all to the best of our ability. We cannot fix what we do not acknowledge; the problems associated with privilege are a perfect example of this.

“University of Toronto TEFL | Teach Away”
OISE University of Toronto TEFL review, submitted by Sean. The course advisors were bloody brilliant! They always got back to me within just a few hours after sending an email off. Sometimes I had questions about the course and sometimes it was more complicated questions about EFL methodology. Their replies showed that had read my email, understood what I was writing about, and gave a perfect…

“Teaching English as a Foreign Language”
Teaching English as a Foreign Language OISE University of Toronto TEFL review, submitted by Jessica. Teaching English as a Foreign Language My experience is similar to Paula’s, the person who yesterday reviewed the International TEFL Academy. “It wasn’t difficult to find a job with this certification”
OISE University of Toronto TEFL review, submitted by Mandy. You can be sure that this school is one of the best TEFL programs. It’s definitely the best option in Toronto. I was looking at some other programs in the Toronto area, but they didn’t have the same credentials as OISE TEFL. What I also really liked about this program is that when you complete the course, they put you in touch with…

Teaching English in Portugal OISE University of Toronto TEFL review, submitted by Nicolas. Teaching English in Portugal. OISE University of Toronto TEFL fully prepared me for a start in teaching English to non-native English speakers. It is 100% online so sometimes there was a disconnect between fully comprehending the course due to the typical delayed question-and-answer process. However, OISE…
