07.06.2020 // Week 11 of the 2020 Quarantine Challenge
Hi, I’m back! It’s been a wild couple weeks, but I’m finally getting back into the groove again. Yesterday I finally started my online TEFL Certification course! As annoying as all the multiple choice quizzes are, I’m really glad to be doing some low-stakes learning and actually gaining practical skills. It feels very different from learning academic skills, and it’s addicting! You can see how much I’ve worked through in just a couple days haha. If we’re being real, I might just finish the whole course in one week instead of three weeks... 👀
Answers to this week’s questions below!
Mon - What is your biggest pet peeve?
OMG people who chew with their mouth open! Lunch meetings are soooo difficult for me lmao
Tue - What motivates you to work hard?
Grad school and postgrad plans, and thinking about all the awesome things I’m working on building into my life. Working hard means doing your best, which is sure to eventually land you some wonderful opportunities! Also, proving people wrong about what I was capable of doing is a pretty sweet form of wholesome revenge.
Wed - What would you sing at Karaoke night?
I’m always down to karaoke anything I know the melody to, but right now I really feel like belting out “SOS” by ABBA with a couple close friends.
Thu - If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I’m already 90% burrito from my childhood, so I’m good to stick with that, some chips, and some solid horchata.
Fri - Have you ever had a nickname? What is it?
Smiley or smiles! Hence the name of my blog ;)
Sat - Who would you want to be stranded with on a deserted island?
Anyone as long as they’re an acquaintance so if we end up fighting from the stress, I don’t go through the trauma of losing a valued relationship. Someone I vibe with but don’t know too well yet!
Sun - What is the worst gift you have received?
A one-year anniversary gift, which was a copy of a love poem I wrote them myself--except it was hand copied onto nice stationary and with their name swapped for mine. Come on, at least go through the effort of being creative! If writing is too intimidating, I’d be just as touched if someone looked up a famous poem that makes them think of me and copied that out instead. This felt like receiving my own gift re-gifted 😬

How to Navigate the World of Online ESL
Tumblr media
Written by Gina Gainous
The purpose of this article is to share detailed information about the most popular online ESL companies, along with some of my personal experiences and anecdotes from other teachers I’ve come across in Facebooks groups and teaching blogs. Before we get started, I’ll give a small self introduction. I’m a biracial woman from the United States with a Bachelor’s Degree in English as a Second Language Education (K-12) and my TESOL certificate. I worked in various schools in my hometown and abroad for the first two years of my career. Nowadays, I work 100% remotely for a company called Liulishuo based in Beijing, China. To begin, I’ll cover some of the basics.
Peak Hours If the company is based in China, they will expect you to work peak hours:
6-9 PM Monday through Friday, Beijing Standard Time
9AM-10PM Saturday and Sunday, Beijing Standard Time
Depending on where you reside, this might mean working early mornings. Currently, I reside on the west coast, and I typically teach from 5AM-8AM on weekdays. Make sure to calculate the time difference before applying. These hours aren’t for everyone, especially if you’re not a morning person. Companies based outside of China will offer afternoon and evening classes, but since they’re smaller you may not get that many bookings. The pay is usually lower as well.
Students Children: Most companies you’ll come across only offer classes with children, who are usually between the ages of 5-14. You may have the option of only teaching older children in middle and high school, but if you’re open to younger students you’ll have many more options. Adults: Some companies offer adult classes, if you’re not interested in teaching children. However, the pay is usually lower.
Salary Scale Base pay: This is the rate of pay you’re guaranteed. Most Chinese companies start their base pay between $15-$18. Companies located in other countries, like Russia or Spain, will have a much lower base pay (between $9-13 per hour) and usually won’t offer any bonus pay. Bonus pay: This is what you’ll see in most advertisements - “Up to $22.00 per hour!” - and depends on a number of factors. Some companies will give you a booking bonus or an attendance bonus. For example, if you teach 100 or so more classes a month, they’ll pay you an additional $2.00 per hour. They may also pay a $2.00 bonus if you open slots during peak hours. So if your base pay is $18, adding the extra $4 will bring your total pay to $22.00/hour. Buyout pay: Very few companies offer this pay structure, but if you’re lucky you might be able to score a contract. Basically, the company will pay you just for keeping your slots open, even if they aren’t booked. Sometimes it’s just a portion, sometimes it’s the whole salary. However, this usually means base pay is fairly low and they may not offer additional bonus pay. In the past, Gogo Kid and DaDaABC used to offer this as a perk, but to my knowledge they changed their contracts last year. Current teachers have confirmed this in 2020.
Payment Methods Bank transfer: This is the method I recommend the most, if the company provides it as an option. There are less fees with bank transfer and they are deposited directly into your account on payday. Paypal: The most popular method of payment. Usually involves both a conversion fee and an instant transfer fee, which add up after a while.
Class Types: Private classes (1 to 1): Teachers instruct one student. These are usually 25 minutes long. Some companies, such as SayABC, have 40 or 50 minute long classes. Small group classes (between 3-4 students): Teachers instruct a small group of students. Again, these classes are usually 25 minutes long. Larger group classes (6 or more students): Some companies offer larger group classes. In this case, they’ll expect you to stand up and will project your webcam in a classroom. These classes usually require a teacher’s assistant who is actually present in the room to help with classroom management.
Important things to note: 1. A lot of companies will provide the lessons for you, but they’ll expect you to have your own class materials. Things like whiteboards, markers, letter cut outs, puppets, dolls, toys, models, and more. Keep in mind, teachers can only write off $100 from their taxes if they pay for materials out of pocket, so be careful of your budget. 2. A revolving door is oftentimes a red flag. If you notice that a specific company is always hiring or posting ads, that’s not a good sign. It either means they have too many teachers and not enough students so booking slots stay empty, or that their teachers are constantly quitting. Which leads me to my next point... 3. Many online teachers have turned to recruiting. As recruiters, their companies will pay them a bonus based on how many people were hired after using their affiliate link to apply, and if those applicants teach enough classes. They are responsible for helping their recruits through the interview process, giving them advice for how to pass the assessments, and getting them familiar with the software. However, be wary of this because some people who have signed up via recruiter link have reported their mentors disappearing soon afterwards. This is not meant to be accusatory, but it is a common occurrence as observed on many Facebook Online ESL Teaching groups. 4. Remember, if the offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Get all the details, in words you can understand, before signing the contract and making the commitment. 5. Most companies only hire what they consider to be “Native English Speakers”. These are people who hold a passport from the following countries: The United States, The UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand [and sometimes South Africa]. This means that even if you speak English perfectly and have the right credentials, if your passport is from a country not listed above then you are considered a Non-Native English Speaker. There are some companies that hire NNES, but they will offer a significantly lower base pay. (Note: many of the bigger companies only hire people from the United States or Canada. A list of companies that hire Non-Native English Speakers can be found at the end of this article.) 6. Most companies only hire those with Bachelor Degrees. It’s preferred that your degree relates to Education or Child Development, but most of the time they’ll accept anything. You may also need a TEFL or TESOL certificate as well, along with some teaching experience. You can sign up for a short course on Groupon. A few of them cost less than $10. (There are some companies that hire without a degree, which are listed at the end of this article.) 7. You are considered an Independent Contractor, NOT an employee. You do not have the same protections you might be used to at a brick and mortar job. This means that these companies can fire you for any reason, or without a reason, at any time. On the other hand, this also means you can also quit for any reason at any time. However, keep in mind that many companies have been known to withhold the final paycheck if this occurs, and there’s not much you can do about it since they’re based in another country and don’t adhere to your country’s laws. It’s best not to burn bridges. 8. A lot of the bigger and popular online ESL companies are geared towards young students between the ages of 5-14 years old. They’ll want to see high energy, the use of props, and general silliness, hence why online educators have coined the term “edutainer”. You must ask yourself if your personality fits this kind of job, because they will expect you to perform in this way during your interview and also in your classes.
Companies to avoid (and why): VIPKid - suspected of data mining, new teachers wait months before getting regular bookings, mixed success with POC teachers, “edutainers” Likeshuo - racist policies, has been seen advertising for white teachers only Acadsoc - low base pay, non-communicative staff, low quality lesson plans iTutorGroup/51Talk - teachers are rated by students and if they get one low rating for a class they can be fired, unresponsive IT staff, inflexible time off policy, harsh cancellation policy Magic Ears - long training process, slow bookings for new teachers, you MUST teach in their style or else you won’t get bookings
Companies I’ve worked for and liked: Liulishuo - communicative staff, offer professional development, offer buyout schedule, hiring freezes, good quality lesson plans, quick and reliable payment each month, responsive IT team Golden Voice English - high quality lesson plans, good students, communicative staff, quick and reliable payment each month, responsive IT team
Companies I’ve worked for and didn’t like: Micro Language - late pay, wouldn’t put black people/POC in their new program despite being top tutors, poor quality lessons with grammar and spelling errors, non-communicative staff, made multiple changes to teaching contracts without input from teachers DaDaABC - offered low base pay, unfair time off policy, removed many of the perks from their new contracts Cambly - difficult students, women often experience sexual harassment from male students, POC teachers have reported racial microaggressions from students, no structured format, pay is low, lots of student no shows or last minute cancellations with no penalty for students
Companies that only hire from The United States/Canada/UK: QKids (and you MUST be based in The US or Canada) Golden Voice English VIPKids English First (US/UK) OpenEnglish
Companies that hire WITHOUT a degree: Magic Ears Cambly Palfish OpenEnglish LatinHire Preply Verbling Learnship Acadsoc SkimaTalk Italki Learnlight 31ABC (but they require teaching experience)
Companies that hire Non-Native English Speakers: Preply Voxy (must have some college credits) Learnship Yiyi English LatinHire
Companies that offer adult-only classes: Huajing Liulishuo English First Learnlight Italki Cambly OpenEnglish
To wrap things up, I’ll share a few more points to look out for in your job search. GREEN FLAGS - They implement hiring freezes so they don’t overhire teachers. Offers professional development opportunities. Quick responses from IT. Quick responses from HR. RED FLAGS - Spam-like advertisements. Lots of recruiter links on Facebook posts or other websites. I hope this guide helps you find the perfect position! ~~~~~

The month is September, the year 2020.
I never in a million years imagined my life would be the way it is today right now. I always knew that this season of my life would be weird, difficult, full of new and scary things. But I never thought this is how it would all play out.
My depression and the apathy that comes with it seems to be here to stay. I'm currently still living at my parents house, though I hope to move out by the end of the month. I'm passively looking for a job, not really doing anything yet hoping it will somehow just work out...
I know it's stupid. I know I need to try to actively take control of my life. But that sounds like so much effort and I really just don't have the energy or mindset to do that. I wish I did, but I just don't.
I have to be grateful to my parents, even though they don't get it and are so frustrated at me for not even trying. I know I would be out on the streets if I didn't have them. And this situation is causing this ever growing feeling of guilt that I am beginning to despise.
If I do move out, I need a job to not have to depend on them. Plus, they can't afford to keep paying for ever. They've actually given me two months to figure my shit out. So come November things could get much worse. Shit can always be worse.
I'm supposed to be writing a dissertation this year in order to finally be able to graduate from uni. Without it I can't work in my chosen profession. So the jobs I'm probably gonna have for now aren't gonna be the best. That is if I actually find one.
The Covid-19 pandemic has left my country with many economic problems. Jobs are scarce and not available in th usual tourism and hospitality sectors this land is known for.
Over the summer I started an online TEFL course which I'm still only about half way through. It sucks. I feel like a failure. Like I never manage to finish what I start... won't be putting that on my resume lol
I'm just a mess right now. Well, I guess it's been this way for a few years really. It simply just got worse this year. Idk. I'm tired. I'm gonna stop thinking now and escape to some show on Netflix or something...

How To Work Remotely From Ecuador
It’s almost the perfect storm for working remotely from Ecuador. COVID 19 has forced a re-think of how we work and the growing gig economy means there have never been as many opportunities to work remotely.
There were already 7 million people (or 3.4% of the population) working remotely in the US before COVID19 hit in early 2020.
Once COVID 19 hit, 88% of global organizations encouraged some type of remote working from home arrangement.
This rapid uptake in companies offering work from home positions means the supply of remote jobs has increased. COVID has effectively forced companies to re-think how they can better accommodate remote employees.
This trend is expected to continue, which will further increase the number of jobs available to remote workers.
Growing appetite for remote jobs
The following graph shows the trend of people googling ‘remote jobs’ in the US over the past 5 years.
Tumblr media
You can see the peaks that correlate to Coronavirus news events of January and March 2020. But, what really interests me are the peaks between July and August, particularly the highest peak of August 16, 2020.
Why you ask? Because I’d expect to see the peaks of January and March as they would be largely driven by media events relating to the Coronavirus. But, the extended, much higher peaks of July and August indicate a stronger long-term trend of a growing market of employees and employers all interested in the phrase ‘remote jobs’.
This indicates the overall environment for working remotely is growing significantly.
Gig economy growing 3x
The gig economy is simply a name given to contract-based jobs that are performed by freelancers as opposed to full or part-time workers. You probably think of Uber drivers and Amazon delivery personnel. These are certainly included, but the range of jobs is much wider and can include roles from digital marketing, writing, editing, transcription, teaching English online and Amazon Mechanical Turk etc.
Now, the gig economy is growing at 3x the pace of regular jobs and 36% of US based workers were already in the gig economy in 2018.
This presents opportunities for you to participate in the gig economy from Ecuador. Sure, you won’t be able to land a role as an Amazon delivery driver, but you don’t have to. There’s plenty of other digital-based opportunities that we touch on below!
What does this mean for Ecuadorian based expats and workers?
This is exciting as it points towards a growing ecosystem for remote or work from home positions. Quite simply, there has never been a better time to start working remotely.
But, before you pop open the champagne and start flinging your CV around, you should also know that:
Competition for remote jobs is still high
Not all jobs can translate into remote opportunities
Experience for most jobs is still an important consideration
Why work remotely in Ecuador?
The case for working remotely in Ecuador is very strong. Ecuador is a small country with:
Diverse environment and cultures
Low cost of living
Relative safety
Good (mostly reliable) internet
US friendly with the same timezone and good international flight connections
Generous visas with 90-day tourist stamps issued at the airport for most nationalities. This can be easily extended for another 90 days for a total initial stay of 180 days!
Several good long term visa options such as the Professional Visa for those that want to stay 2+ years.
I honestly think there is something in Ecuador to suit most people’s tastes in addition to the popular rhetoric revolving well-preserved city centers, the Galapagos, and volcanoes.
Ecuador’s digital nomad challenges
However, Ecuador is yet to achieve the same level of notoriety as other ‘digital nomad hotspots’ such as Medellin (Colombia), Chiang Mai (Thailand) & Bali (Indonesia). I suspect this is because Ecuador is not as strong in the following areas:
Nightlife and partying
Relatively small digital nomad community
Not as easy to get by with just English
Immature digital/startup ecosystem
Electronics are expensive to buy and repair (we suggest bringing these with you)
Working remotely for an Ecuadorian vs US/non-Ecuadorian company
Show me the money
If your main priority is making the Benjamins, then hands down it will generally be more attractive to work for a US (or Canadian, European, Australian, etc) company.
The minimum wage in Ecuador is $400 and the average monthly wage ranges depending on the source. It ranges from $460 to $500 to over $1,300. Given the large percentage of informal workers in Ecuador, it’s quite difficult to pin down the actual average monthly salary.
Whatever the source, you’ll likely find it difficult to land a local job that pays more than $1,000 per month.
¿Hablas español?
You will considerably increase your chances of landing a good local job if you speak Spanish fluently. Without it, you’re going to really limit the opportunities available to you.
If you only speak English, then sticking to English-friendly jobs is a no-brainer until you’ve become fluent in Spanish.
Some Ecuadorians find success working remotely for companies based in Spain. If you’re Spanish is good enough, this could be a viable option for you too.
What jobs can you perform remotely from Ecuador?
This is a super expansive question because remote jobs by their nature can be performed just about anywhere. But, I’m going to focus on the more popular options I’ve come across digital nomads or settled expats (like myself) working remotely in Ecuador.
These are:
Your current/previous role
Teaching English Online
Digital Marketing
Content Writer
Virtual Assistant
Web Development
Web Design
Customer Support
Tourism
Transcription
Build Your Own Website
Investing & Trading
1. Your current/previous role
Many industries are moving towards accommodating remote workers. Some traditional service-based industries such as lawyers, engineers and even medical professionals have even been willing to adopt some degree of remoteness.
So, you’d be surprised at the types of jobs that can be at least partially completed remotely. I’d suggest it’s absolutely worthwhile going through your previous jobs/careers to see if there is any chance you can perform a similar role remotely. If there is, don’t be afraid to reach out to old colleagues and bosses with some potential options on how you can be a valuable remote contributor.
2. Teaching English Online
There has been a boon in recent times teaching English to students via the internet. This charge has been led by the burgeoning Chinese middle-class that has a seemingly endless appetite for ensuring their kids receive the highest level of education from an early age.
How much can I make teaching online?
Average earnings vary greatly but expect to earn between $10-$25 per hour. This is generally paid as a contractor, so don’t expect health insurance or other benefits.
Requirements
Whilst requirements vary by company, the following are pretty standard requirements.
Native English speaker (some also accept native-level fluency)
TEFL certificate
University degree
Available during peak learning times (before / after school)
Unbridled enthusiasm
The timezone requirement here can be a challenge when teaching from Ecuador. For example, if you’re teaching kids in China, the majority of parents book for 6:00-10:00pm (Beijing time). This is 5:00 – 9:00am in Ecuador.
Whilst you’re generally awarded flexibility when booking your class times, you may be required to teach a certain number of ‘peak hours’ for your contract to be renewed. Or if you don’t open up to peak times you may just not get many students booking you. This is especially true for new teachers.
Some companies also require a US accent. These are generally the bigger, more established companies like VIP Kid. I’ve always found this requirement a little bit weird – as these companies are happy to take on teachers with say, a strong southern drawl, but reject applicants that have neutral accents that are not from the US.
Whilst I’ve never taught English online, I’ve spent far too much time around others while they are conducting their lessons.
Full disclosure: my biggest learning from this is that I know I am not equipped for teaching kids online. Why you ask? The amount of enthusiasm required to keep their attention, the monotony of teaching the same classes over and over again and the sheer patience required are too much for me.
But, I know many people that really enjoy teaching online and thrive in that environment. Horses for courses.
Which companies offer online teaching jobs?
The following companies are popular starting points:
VIP Kid
Magic Ears
DaDa ABC
Say ABC
Landi
PalFish
Some of these companies also offer their current teachers referral bonuses if they bring on new teachers. As the incentive is only generally paid for successful applicants once they teach a certain number of classes, it’s in the best interests of the original teacher to coach their recruits to ensure they get paid.
As a new teacher, it might be worthwhile seeking these people out on various forums or Facebook groups. Some initial coaching on what each company truly looks for can be invaluable. On the flip side, I’ve seen some incredibly intelligent, hard-working teachers with years of experience get knocked back for seemingly trivial oversights.
3. Digital Marketing
Digital marketing is a broad industry that covers everything from social media, content marketing, search engine optimization, paid ads, email, automation and more. Now, I’m clearly biased because this is what I do, but I still see so much potential for new entrants into this field.
I’ve worked as a digital marketer for agencies, startups and large corporations. There is a lot of opportunity in this area because it’s constantly evolving and digital channels continue to eat into the budgets of traditional mediums like print, TV and radio.
If I was just starting out, I’d concentrate on getting good at one small aspect of digital marketing and offering it as a service to clients via platforms such as Upwork, Legiit or even Fiverr.
Offering a specialized service is key. The types of niche services I’m talking about include:
Chat bot building
Email automation
Instagram management
PPC (pay per click) management for [insert industry]
Once you’ve had some success for clients with your niche offering, then you can either use this experience to either broaden into other areas or use the experience to apply for marketing jobs either in-house or at an agency.
4. Content writer
Do you enjoy writing? And do you have detailed knowledge about particular industries? If so, then producing content could be a good option for you.
Many people are surprised to learn how important content is for any digital marketing strategy. And whilst the competition is high because there is a low barrier to entry, the demand for good, dependable writers continues to increase.
For example, I know writers that produce content in certain niches such as legal, medical and engineering that make a very comfortable living ($4K+ monthly).
Think this could be for you? Great. Start writing about a topic that you:
Have pre-existing knowledge
Suspect is commercially valuable (basically any business that spends on marketing)
Enjoy
This 3rd point is key; enjoyment is critical to your long-term success. You don’t want to be in a position where you’re staring at the computer, digging deep for words that just don’t come because you aren’t passionate about the industry.
My last tip is that you don’t want to fall into the trap of offering cheap writing services because you don’t understand your worth. There are loads of cheap general writers out there that are just terrible. Positioning yourself as a niche specialist will earn your more money and allow you to provide better quality to your clients as you know one subject intimately.
5. Virtual assistant
Virtual assistants for all types of industries are in demand. It’s true that there is more demand at the lower end of the price spectrum (ie $5/hour), but this is not where you should position yourself. Again, specializing in a particular industry or skill will set you apart and allow you to command a higher rate ($15-$25 / hr).
This can be a great option for those that maybe don’t see themselves learning a new technology-based skill and can focus on their organizing, communication, and planning skills instead.
There’s plenty of virtual assistant jobs in the freelancer platforms listed below.
6. Web development
One of the most remote-friendly industries is web development. But, this is not for the faint-hearted as web development takes a lot of learning and practice before you can start applying for your 1st job. Thankfully, there’s plenty of great free or cheap resources out there if you want to pursue this angle.
I recommend this free Introduction to Python course by MIT to start your journey – especially if you’re interested in data analysis and AI.
7. Web design
Have an eye for clean lines and attention to detail with a creative flair? Pursuing web or graphic design might be worthwhile pursuing. It’s very remote-friendly with lots of designers working from home or wherever they choose.
It’s one of the few jobs I’ve seen Ecuadorians perform remotely for locally based companies.
But, building up the skills and portfolio also takes time. There are loads of cheap tutorials to teach you the theory (such as Udemy) and tools (ie Photoshop & Illustrator), but some companies still only take on candidates with formal design related degrees.
8. Customer Support
This one can be a real gem in the rough. The prevalence of digital platforms and SAAS products has created many roles for virtual customer support agents. These are the types of roles that were once handled by call center support operators, just repurposed for the online format.
As many customer support roles rely on set hours, being in the same timezone as the US can make these roles ideal for Ecuadorian-based applicants.
You also don’t generally need a lot of experience, so the barrier to entry is low but competition can be high.
One perk for this type of work is that some very forward-thinking, remote-friendly companies employ a lot of customer support agents. This potentially allows you to work your way up into other roles within a world-class company.
These roles can be found on remote job boards and directly with the company.
9. Tourism
Yes, I know the tourism industry is having a hard time since COVID, but I think it’s safe to say that we all love traveling and will be wandering the globe again shortly. Michelle works in tourism and can’t wait for the tourists to come back!
When they do (and they will) there will be demand for sales and travel advisors that speak English. You may even be able to find an Ecuadorian based job if you’re primarily dealing with English speaking clients.
But, if you’re thinking of becoming a tour guide in Ecuador, then I’m sorry, that is much more difficult. It involves a 4-year degree within Ecuador (or possibly transferring some credits from a related degree back home to shorten the period of study).
Some tour companies do send tour leaders to accompany their guests whilst in Ecuador. But, these are generally associated with the company and not a separate service you could just provide from Ecuador.
10. Transcription
Can you type, are a fantastic listener, and are just crazy about details? Then transcribing could be the side gig for you.
The proliferation of the ability to record audio (ie mobile phones) has meant that everyone has easy access to record business meetings and other commercially important events. But, going through these audio notes is a real pain, so companies can opt to cheaply outsource the transcribing of audio to written notes.
There’s also the specialized fields of legal and medical transcription that tend to pay more.
One of the more beginner-friendly companies to try is TranscribeMe. They basically accept anyone so long as you pass the tests. The pay starts at $15 per audio hour. This means that you need to transcribe one hour’s worth of conversation (not work for one hour). As a beginner, it’s realistically going to take you 3 hours to transcribe one hours worth of audio. So, your hourly rate shifts to $5/hr.
My transcription experience
In the spirit of trying anything once, I did previously give transcribing a shot. I figured I’m a fast typer, so transcribing would be a walk in the park. I was wrong.
You see, AI voice to text technology has come a long way. So, recordings that can easily be converted from audio to text are done by computers with some light human intervention. This costs much less than having a person transcribe, so it remains the obvious choice for transcription where possible.
So what audio is left for you to transcribe? Difficult audio. Think of someone recording a meeting on their phone (no special microphone or anything) and trying to type out notes at the same time. What you end up hearing is a mess of sounds that can be very difficult to decipher what words are said. And this is assuming there is no accent to deal with.
I don’t want to turn you off giving transcribing a shot too, but you should go in with your eyes wide open.
11. Build your own website
This isn’t so much a ‘job’ or ‘role’ exactly. It’s more of a long-term opportunity to increase your income. There’s plenty of niches that are still far from reaching market saturation. Creating your own site around one of these niches can really pay off long-term.
But, it’s going to take you at least 6 months of consistent effort to start seeing any sort of results. It’s common to see people start their own sites, then give up after a few weeks worth of effort. And I get it. It can be super frustrating if you don’t see results and have no real way of knowing if the results are going to eventuate (they may not if you’ve chosen a niche that is too competitive).
If you happen to be fluent in Spanish too, then you’ve now got two very different markets to pursue – and twice the amount of work! But, given the low competition in Ecuador, you should be able to see results in just about any industry.
I’m constantly coming up with ideas for Ecuadorian based websites that I know will work, but I just don’t have the time to pursue. I know you’ll have some good ideas of your own.
If you want to try your hand at building your first website, I recommend grabbing a cheap theme from Themeforest and either updating the content/images yourself, or paying someone to mock it together for you.
I’ve had a few people approach me to build their sites, but it’s not something I currently offer as a once-off service. Why? Because a website without marketing is a waste of time and won’t get results. If you’re potentially interested in ongoing marketing services + website build, then feel free to get in contact.
12. Investing & Trading
The last option on the list is my favorite for building long-term wealth. Trading and investing. Many expats are familiar with the attractive rates offered for fixed term deposits (or CDs) by cooperativa’s such as JEP in Ecuador. Some choose to invest in these as a requirement for their Investor Visa, whilst others actively choose them because of the high interest rates between 8-10%.
This is most definitely NOT investment advice as there are reasons why such high interests rates are offered. I’m just leaving it here as an option for you to know that there are expats in Ecuador that live entirely off the interest from their CDs.
Trading stocks, bonds, crypto (ie Bitcoin) and other assets is also a viable option as you can do it from anywhere. I believe there are small trading groups setup in the major cities, but don’t be surprised if your Ecuadorian friends don’t actively invest or know alot about the financial markets.
Where to find remote jobs
We’ve established there is a lot of opportunity across many different fields for remote workers, but where the hell do you find these jobs?
Here are my recommendations for starting your search:
1. Your current network
My path to working online was through a previous employer that already valued my work. We’d already built trust, making it a lot easier for them to embrace the other unknowns that come with remote work relationships.
So, before you go off and try and learn another skill that you can utilize to work from home, I suggest reaching out to your current network. Perhaps offering to work for a lesser amount during a probation period to further de-risk it for your potential employer.
2. Freelancer platforms
These sites all work on the basic principle that you sign up by creating a profile of your work history and skills. You can then start applying for different jobs.
Outsourcely
Outsourcely aims to connect “remote workers” with clients around the world. It’s a good place to find long term client relationships.
Upwork
The biggest freelancer site out there. But, they also take a large cut. 20% of your first $500 goes to Upwork, then a sliding scale from there.
Note, if applying for US based jobs, it really helps to ensure you have a valid US ID. This unlocks a lot of the better US based jobs as clients have the option of only selecting US based candidates.
You get some credits called “connects” initially, but then you need to pay for more in order to apply for jobs. You need to invest in the platform (both time and money) before you’re going to get to most out of it.
Freelancer
Biggest genuine competitor to Upwork. They also operate on a paywall model where you need to invest in some of their premium features in order to get the most from your job search.
People Per Hour
Focus is more geared towards on entry-level jobs. This can be great for newer remote workers, but experienced workers may have a tough time as they are more likely to be under-bid by less qualified professionals.
Fiverr
A great place for new remote workers to get some experience before moving onto higher paying gigs. Reputation for being the cheapest place to get work done – and more often than not you get what you pay for…
3. Job Boards
I’ve focused on job boards that cater towards remote positions below. You can of course use general job boards too, but you may end up spending a lot of time searching for remote-friendly roles.
This list is far from exhaustive as job boards catering for remote workers seem to pop up every week.
LinkedIn
Great starting place because there are lots of jobs. But, also lots of competition.
We Work Remotely
One of the oldest remote job boards still as popular as ever.
Dynamite Jobs
Human curated job board. All posted jobs checked to ensure valid and paid.
Remotive
Focus on software development, but good mix of other jobs too.
Working Nomads
Also offer an email of curated jobs if you sign up (free).
4. Facebook groups
There are numerous Facebook Groups setup that can also help you in your job search. Here’s some you should start with:
Digital Nomads Around the World
Large community that focuses on digital nomad issues and job postings. Not specific to any geography.
Ecuador Expats
Largest Facebook group for Ecuadorian based expat info. Some good insights on general Ecuadorian matters.
Ecuador Digital Nomads
Smaller group for digital nomads and remote workers based in Ecuador to connect and share. Disclaimer: I’m a moderator of this group so you’ll get more tips from me if you join.
5. Direct with company
Once you find a job worth applying for, I suggest trying to apply directly on the company’s website. Why? Because it shows you went just the extra yard to do some research about the company and that you care. You can also try to find the person responsible for hiring so you can address your CV to them. These smaller details are needed to get noticed in the competitive job market.
I also suggest setting up Google Alerts for you 5 dream companies. For example, assume you really wanted to work for Slack in their customer support team. Then you’d setup an alert to track the phrase: slack “customer success”. You’ll then be emailed as soon as new jobs come up and can apply right away to be ahead of your competition.
Final Words
The future looks great for remote workers that choose to work from Ecuador. It’s such a great destination for those that love to mix work with weekend trips to the jungle, beach, mountains or even the Galapagos.
The long-term trend clearly indicates there will be more opportunities for remote workers. So basing yourself in Ecuador to capitalize on this trend makes so much sense that it’s kinda shocking there aren’t more nomads and expats choosing to do the same.
Lastly – if you’re currently (or thinking of) working remotely from Ecuador, you should Join our Ecuador Digital Nomads group to connect with others.

..looks like you are drowning..
part one
looks like you are drowning & hope i am wrong. i can see the struggle the turn about in water.
i have done that too pat says that i have paid the price but i wonder
i hope you survive come clean bare your feathers.
fly high
if not i will lay a petal and think of you
as i think of the others that drowned before you that had no feathers
part two,
it looks like you are drowning again shall I jump in to save you and maybe sink myself or shall I wait to see to lay a flower at our feet
part three
maybe you are not drowning really that I made it up and you are dancing like the others
while people die and we lay flowers in memoriam corona
part four
you are floating maybe; I did that for hours went spongy, now face reality and I still think that you are drowning like the others.

concrete reasoning
gray day: i am out for a walk when a sidewalk camellia begs myriad questions:
runaway bride?
garden club mishap? rejected proposal? hothouse runaway? centerpiece rebel?
confronted by the unexplained, the human drive to make order from chaos is relentless.
whatever the story, the end is the same: beauty appears and we can only wonder …
with a schedule to keep and no answers at hand i press onward, feeling the inner bloom of nascent gratitude.

Every time I find clay in the garden, beneath a rosebush, say, I find slate too. This is just something I have noticed over the course of a year. It is not necessary to mention these things, especially now, I suppose. I am not happy unless I’m pouring something – tomato feed. I am Philip Levine’s Burial Rights, I recall Bei Dao. These days, I feel the trick to a good carpark, to feel anything, is my proximity to this flower arrangement.

A story of three fish might be fish bones in a field for birds. Koi feeding, koi feed in a garden centre, at the next junction. Fish bent back over backwards, in blue paint. Scattered to the water’s edge a handful of dirt, to a handful of colour, blue scales at the centre of the field, a water mark, a stone left unturned.

The Life of Petals
We use flowers to mark occasions– Weddings and funerals. The petals linger only briefly, But the sentiment still hangs Heavy in the air, years after Like pollen That settled over and over again On our patio table and chairs, All those long Midwestern summers When heat robbed our lungs of breath. And Wildflowers, not cut-storebought ones, marked a different time, Of an everyday type. Now, cut flowers feel gluttonous to me. And petals bless us with The gentleness of how life ought to be.

Utopia Burning
Warnings ignored from many a social self appointed warlord Echoes of dissident discord striking a high-pitched off key note As hungry flames lick and lash causing an apocalyptic molten urban and suburban foretold mess Whispered by familiar oracles their verbal miracles documenting their fiery cautionary chronicles Of systems slowly imploding temperaments exploding fake veneers and smiles exfoliating as ignorant masses squawk for a helping hand from those witnessing their demise and burning squirming shedding acid tears for Utopia burning…

Still Silent
No sound, water jelly flat, so still it hurts my ears. Even sun slides silently into autumn’s metal light.
All jamboree, clang and din now far away in time. Even breath is offensive here, in case of ripple and slapping rocks.
I cannot read or turn a page lest a mumble or paper scrape, escape and shatter the loch. Like a breaking glass to a rousing cheer, as all that knowledge gets out.
So I stare at reflections in late day waters reliable quiet, but maybe their heat is not that hot.

Camellia
You lay beautiful and gasping alone on Tithonian stone. A sudden fall from grace, petal broken angel: forage for sweeper winds.
Transient as summer days. Temperate these forevers soon fade to winter grey. Dog-day memories cannot abide short-day cold.
What are you, I wonder? A love certified in Bacchus’s dance or a loved one certified and boxed in tears and brown ale.

©️ Dai Fry 30th March 2020.
The giant fish takes back the myth
The morning before she was to become a story the sea was baited quiet, the kind that silks
all desire down to swish. To decide to leap from one cool world to another just for breakfast
is to bare your colours to the scaling knife of the wind, and she did – her fireback beacon launched
for the brief protein of flying legs. How often we fail to see that dark hull waiting, we beasts so full up
with the rush of living for our risks. And the shape of the poised hero held no meaning, to a fish
but oh the shimmerhook, like all the moons her eye’s nightcoin had ever purchased
from deep beneath the water, and there is the lust, the swish- -and want. The glowworm crescent to silver her belly.
We all want to shine in fullness. Only heroes are given names in these stories.
For her need she was translated into an island, and I am running the delicate gasp of her jaws
in the shape of this coast, forever straining for the hook and still called only fish
even with all we have made of her. Every time I desire to transcend my quiet water, I forget the heroes
and leap from her skin, and hope that landing empty
but with one eye fixed on the moon every night after this will be enough.
-Ankh Spice
Beheaded Camelia’s
delicate red petals last longer on the less travelled path. Flash of disappearing red lace, paper thin survival. Unbroken in bright sunlight, bright on grey stone. Destruction stays at home to avoid destruction.
The red wing is allowed space to revolve reflect in water. “Temporary” like the word “soon”, a duration undecided.

“I recommend (if you have the $$$$ available) taking the TEFL with UoT TEFL”

OISE University of Toronto TEFL review, submitted by Cristal.
My main reason for choosing the UoT TEFL course was because I live in the Toronto area and it was the only TEFL provider I could find which was actually based in the city. Or, maybe the only one I could be certain was based in a bricks and mortar Toronto city location. Compared with a lot of these other TEFL courses offering tuition…

Project better future: 2020 Edition
Day 1 Long story short, 2020′s been thoroughly kicking my ass.
Depression & Anxiety on main? CHECK Broke AF? CHECK 2 weeks til deadlines? CHECK Graduation hanging in the balance of work being submitted or not? CHECK No income? CHECK Forced in to living at the family house again, because you can’t afford to live alone anymore, due to a global pandemic? CHECK
Sooo.... yeah, i’ve pretty much fallen off the wagon this year, I used to work so much harder, and be so much more motivated to make my future better for myself, but this year, it’s just fallen apart, and i’ve really just let it happen, and to be completely honest, i’ve had enough of myself beign like this.
This blog, and writing out my plans, and feelings isn’t somethign i had ever intended to stop doing, it just kinda happened on it’s own, but it did always help me a lot, and so i’m back again, and im ready ot get working, and moving and trying again to make myself a better future.
Current situation: I’m in my final year at university, in my final 9 days, I have to write a whoel dissertation, and then make a presentation for it, which i’ll need to film myself presenting as well, I also have 2 pieces of make-up work because i failed some things earlier in the year, and just yeah, it is all due on the 14th.
I’ve been procrastinating it all like a mad, because school stuff makes my anxiety flare real bad, but I truly cannot afford to do this anymore. If i don’t get these pieces of work in, I will fail my whole degree, I have have have to get them in, even if it’s low quality work and I only get D’s, those D’s would literally be enough to get me a degree.
D’s will literally get me a degree right now.
My rough plan at present is to just get as much of my introduction section written tonight as I can, and email it to my advisors at the university for feedback, and whilst I wait for them to get back to me, I will begin trying to do the data section of the dissertation the day after, and then send that on to them as well, in hopes they get some feedback to me fast enough that I can make use of it.
I will then Look at the make-up work, and do what I can of that over the weekend.
The only way here that I can succeed, is is i actually do a good chunk every day, there’s no excuses, i need to do some every day if i’m going to have D worthy work in by 5pm on the 14th of August.
If I can get the work in, and I did enough to get D’s, i’ll be able to graduate.
But what about getting work, or life after the 14th?
2020 being what it is, there’s next to no jobs available, especially within the field of marine vertebrate zoology, which is what my degree is on, I did one day (whilst procrastinating) begin thinking about how to earn money, or begin working, and my options are pretty limited, especially by the fact that I haven’t already finished my degree, i was supposed to be done in may, but I got extensions because of how sick I was (not corona, just depression/anxiety).
And so the solutions I came to were that, even if i did pass my degree somehow, that I need extra training to show in place of experience, and so I began looking in to the things I could get extra training in affordably, at home, online, where it’s safe, and that would also lead to a well paying job. One of the biggest contenders was Statistics and data analysis, I have experience with these things thanks to my degree,a nd they are highly sought after still eve with the pandemic, also they pay reallyyyyyy well, £21-22k GBP at entry level.
It was during that time that I realised how much i’ve come to just hate academia, and scholarly things, and that it is because university has absolutely destroyed every last bit of happiness I had about sciences in the last year, and that I need some time away from it all.but also something that would perhaps be a little more in my own control, as the statistics stuff would still be highly dependant on me actually getting hired, even after getting additional training, and then I somehow found me way to TEFL (Teaching English as a foreign language)
I spent like 3 days going really far down an internet rabbit hole, learning everything I could about TEFL courses, what it’s like to actually work teaching English as a foreign language, finding out what opportunities exist out there, teachign in a classroom environment, teachign abroad, in a business, teachign online, and which TEFL courses would actually have come form reputable sources, and would be fully accredited, and was lucky enough that the course I wanted to take was on sale 60% off, and yes, it was a fully UK gov accredited lvl3 course, it’s regulated by Ofqual.
So I paid for the course, started it, and finished the first module within the week I had begun it (I was procrastinating my uni stuff, big surprise).
So following the 14th of August 220, when my university work is all done, submitted in whatever state it is yeeted into turn it in, in, what im planning on doing next is a day or 2 of rest, and then I’ll be pushing to finish the tefl course ASAP, so that I can get myself registered with online teaching companies asap, and hopefully begin earning some money, because I am so far into the overdraft of my bank account it’s not even funny, and I can survive maybe til the end of September at best if i’m exceptionally frugal.
Chances are that over the next year I will probably take the training for statistics and data analysis as well, but i do need time away from sciences, and i need some time to just be a bit more free, be able to travel if i want to travel, save some money up finally, and stop living the life of a broke ass student, and be able to take work with me where ever I am, i guess i just want to live a slightly more stable life, where i’m able to do the things I actually want to do.
I’m not sure when i’ll next post, but I think it’ll be tomorrow, saying where im up to with my dissertation work, we’ll see.
Congratulations if you read all that.

Guide to Online Tutoring
Reasons to Consider Becoming a Tutor
If you’re burned out on your 9-5, or you’re looking for a part-time job to earn some extra money, consider becoming a tutor online. There are a plethora of reasons for you to review the opportunity, and we’ve outlined the most important ones for your consideration.
Work-Life Balance
It’s not a huge secret that the work-life balance equation has become less of a balance and more of an unequal scale that tips farther on the work side. Between longer hours, increased commute times, and required work travel, some professionals are burnt out on the whole endeavor.  It’s why so many people are starting to consider legit work from home opportunities.
When it comes to work-life balance, it’s safe to assume that there will always be demands that you have to accommodate. However, when you remove some of the aspects that are within your control (such as a commute), you can create a more equally balanced scale.
Becoming an online tutor is a work from home opportunity that may be just the solution you are looking for. With flexible hours and no commute, you can regain some of the balance you’ve been looking for in your career. You can adjust your schedule to fit your family’s needs, while still generating an income. Taking the step to create a happier life for yourself, by changing your professional career, may start with becoming an online tutor.
Supplemental Income
If you’re looking for ways to increase your income, tutor jobs are an excellent option to consider. Not only is online tutoring a job you can do from home, but it’s also a gig that will enable you to make good money.  The work is flexible for most of the job opportunities, which means you have the choice to make as little or as much as you want in your spare time.
If you choose to pursue the opportunity to tutor from home, you will be able to capitalize on the times you’re not at your 9-5. Adding a side hustle to your schedule may negate the whole concept of work-life balance. But, if you require reliable income, the sacrifices you’ll have to make will be worth the financial reward.
How Much Do Online Tutors Make?
If you hold a Bachelor's degree, most companies start new hires between $12-14/hr (USD). Many of the companies polled report that $20-26/hr is possible, as a tutor builds up experience.  Tutors often increase their rate through referrals or teaching in-demand specialty subjects, in which case some tutors report that $50-100+/hr is possible.
Can You Make a Living as an Online Tutor?
Like most ways to make money online or earn extra money, it is possible to turn your tutoring side hustle into a full-time gig. However, before you hand in your resignation to make a full-time living as a tutor, you should build up some experience with several of the best online tutoring platforms. Teaching on several sites will help provide some stability in case of listings at one company drying up.
Reliable Employers
When you’re looking for remote jobs, it can become complicated to avoid scammers.  A lot of companies that endorse they will “make you your own boss” are pyramid schemes. These are operations that will very rarely help you turn a profit.
It’s even more challenging to find a way to make money from home on a part-time basis.
Online jobs, while becoming more commonplace, are still inundated with scams and false promises. Becoming a home tutor safeguards you from these ploys. It also enables you to make the extra money from home that you need. You can establish yourself as a freelancer who works for a credible organization.
You may decide to stick with tutoring from home or branch into other fields that allow you to work remotely. In either circumstance, starting with an online tutoring company will provide you with a safe introduction to the world of virtual employment.
Qualifications to Become an Online Tutor
Every online tutoring organization is looking for something different. Some are seeking native English speakers to educate children in foreign countries. Others want to capitalize on your area of expertise to provide online tutoring for students who need help with test prep.  Some want translators who can help adults sharpen their foreign language skills. Whatever the case, there are a few qualifications that seem to be in demand across the board.
College Degree
Most online tutoring organizations want you to have a college degree. A few platforms offer opportunities with no experience necessary. But, the majority of organizations are looking for educators who have a degree from a 4-year, accredited college. Some of the platforms are seeking applicants with expanded knowledge in a specific subject. For example, if you have an interest in becoming an English tutor or online English teacher, having a degree in that subject would benefit you.
Some online tutoring platforms offer their services to students in higher education if you’re interested in working at this more advanced level of tutoring than you will need either a Masters or Ph.D. in a field of your expertise to offer your services.
High-Speed Internet Connection
The second (and a very obvious) qualification is that you have a high-speed Internet connection. If you can't connect consistently with your students, you won’t be able to work at home as an online tutor. While this may require you to make an initial investment, it will be worth the price to make money online.
It may also be pertinent to note that you will need a reliable desktop or laptop computer. Some of the online platforms encourage their employees to work from anywhere. When they offer this flexibility, they do so with the understanding that you will have a working laptop and a good Wi-Fi connection. Reliability is a massive value in the online tutoring community, and you’re expected to uphold your end of the bargain.
Online Payment Capabilities
You will need an established method of accepting payment. Whether you prefer to receive compensation via PayPal, or you prefer direct deposit to your bank account, you will need to have some online method of accepting payment to work as an online tutor.
Interest & Passion
It’s easy to become caught up in the idea of a flexible schedule and a remote work opportunity. It’s important to remember that if you want to become an online tutor, you should have an interest and a passion for teaching. As is with any job, the work is not going to be easy, and you’re going to have both good and bad days.
Working with children and students can be a rewarding career path. It can also be a difficult one. Not every student will be the ideal intellectual who is eager for your help. You will need to learn techniques to assist you in working with the ones who are less passionate about their tutoring.
Make sure, before you apply to be an online tutor, that the reason you’re pursuing the opportunity is to help others. If you’re not interested in the opportunity for that foundational reason, you are setting yourself up for failure. Before you commit to working as a remote online tutor, check-in with yourself, make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons.
How to Become an Online Tutor
If we’ve convinced you to take the leap and teach online at home, there are a few simple steps you’ll need to take. First, you’ll need to find the platform that best suits your background and experience. With so many companies that promote working from anywhere as a tutor, how will you know which is the best one to pursue employment with?
We’ve taken the hard work out of this equation and completed the research for you. Keep reading to learn about the seven best online tutoring opportunities available to you. We’ll give you an overview of the qualifications required, the hourly earning potential, and a glimpse of the types of subjects offered.
Whether you’re looking for a side gig to supplement your full-time income or a new career, there is a tutoring opportunity for you, and we’ve found them!
Additional Resources to Become an Online Tutor
If you have the drive to work from home as an online tutor, but not the background and experience, there are plenty of solutions. Don’t put aside your dream of joining one of the best work from home jobs available. Put on your thinking hat, brush up your study skills, and use some of the excellent resources available. They will not only help you pursue your dreams, but they will also afford the expertise that you can use in your daily life.
Training Courses
Udemy is an online platform that offers a variety of educational courses. The site has a specific section of their website dedicated to teaching and learning. You can sharpen your skills in a subject area as well as learn techniques to become an effective tutor.
While these courses do cost money, the price is nominal in comparison to the income you can generate when you become an online tutor.
Public Speaking Assistance
If you feel like you freeze up in front of the camera, you’re not alone. Many people suffer from an inability to “perform” once they realize they’re in front of an audience. Even the most accomplished English speakers sometimes find they lose their ability to speak and formulate coherent sentences.
YouTube is a great resource to use to help you brush up on your public speaking skills. There are a ton of video tutorials that will teach you to speak with confidence. There are exercises you can incorporate into your daily routine that will prepare you for your onscreen debut.
Expanding Online Knowledge
One area we’ve failed to address is the computerized aspect of online tutoring. Even if your focus is to become an English tutor to students who use English as their second language, you will have to have an excellent working knowledge of computers and the online community.
Your trouble areas may be as simple as your typing speed. If you want to improve your ability to type and communicate on a computer, you can use this free tool from TypingClub. This will help increase your data entry capabilities so that you can work with students in a more efficient manner.
If your needs are more complicated, you may consider engaging the assistance of a friend or family member. Give your friend, who is an Internet connectivity expert a call via phone, and let him know about your interest in improving your knowledge. You will find an extensive support system if you ask for the help you need. Your friends and family will be more than willing to assist you in gaining future employment.
The Bottom Line
The era of online tutoring is upon us. Students have access to dozens of resources to enable them to succeed in the classroom or in learning a new language.
Likewise, if you want to become a tutor, the opportunities to start a successful business are plentiful. With the ability to set your schedule, pay rate, and decide what subject areas you offer, it has never been easier to provide educational services. Whether you want to make tutoring a side gig, or your full-time job, you can start your own tutoring business from the comfort of your home.
The resources available to assist you with your online tutoring career are also abundant. If you wish to pursue the opportunity to teach from home, you can achieve the education and experience you need online. If you’re inspired to pursue online teaching, you can earn your education degree online through several accredited programs. From there, you can seek a career as an online teacher.
Teaching and tutoring are unique callings. Online education is a great way to make some extra money or create an at-home work opportunity. However, it also requires you to have an interest and passion for helping others. If you feel like you’re one of the individuals who find purpose in assisting others in the field of education, navigate your options in the online tutoring arena, it may be the perfect field for your next big career move.

6 Best TEFL Courses for Teaching English Overseas
Posted: 4/18/20 | April 18th, 2020
One of the best ways to make money overseas is to teach English. Dozens of countries all around the world are always on the hunt for qualified English teachers, providing a steady income for travelers looking to pad their bank account in between trips.
Of course, teaching English abroad is also a valuable, enriching job in and of itself. Not only do you get to enjoy expat life in a far-flung destination but you get to help a community and the people who live in it while gaining valuable work and life experience. It’s a win-win!
In order to find a teaching position abroad, you’ll need to take a TEFL course first. TEFL stands for “Teaching English as a Foreign Language.” It’s a certificate program that teaches you how to teach English as a foreign language. (While you can find jobs without a TEFL certificate, they will be few and far between.)
TEFL programs are offered online and in-person all around the world; prices vary depending on where you enroll. Just like there are thousands of universities that offer bachelor’s degrees, there are thousands of companies that offer a certificate called “TEFL.”
Since there can be a lot of competition for teaching positions, you’ll want to make sure you enroll in a reputable program that will teach you the skills you need — not only to find a job but to succeed at it.
To help you get started, I’ve made a list of the top six TEFL programs. Having taught overseas in both Thailand and Taiwan (and having studied to be a history teacher myself), I can tell you not all programs are created equal!
1. i-to-i
When it comes to online TEFL courses, i-to-i is one of the best. It’s a basic online TEFL course that gives you 120 hours of study and costs $139 USD, making it one of the most affordable on the market. If you’re not 100% sure teaching overseas is for you, this course would be the best for testing the waters.
i-to-i also offers a 180-hour course with additional content on teaching young students and teaching grammar (because let’s face it, most of us native speakers are terrible at grammar). It also has 300-hour courses, TESOL-equivalent courses, and more. (See below for more about TESOL.)
If you’re new to teaching and want to see if it’s for you, this is the company I’d suggest you start with — especially if you’re on a budget. That said, since it’s all online, you’ll need to make sure you have the self-discipline to put in the work.
2. TEFLPros
TEFLPros offers an online 120-hour course that includes 17 hours of in-class observation videos. Its platform is incredibly user friendly and includes quizzes, worksheets, assignments, and tips on lesson planning. It’s $349 USD.
This course has more video content than most others, so if you prefer learning that way, this is a good choice for you. Best of all, they offer a free trial of the course, so you can check it out before you commit.
3. myTEFL
This is another affordable (but reputable) TEFL program. myTEFL offers a standard 120-hour program for $299 USD. In addition to all the online lessons and assignments, myTEFL will also provide you with a letter of recommendation upon completion, as well as assist you with finding a job.
You’ll have three months to complete your course; however, you’ll also get an additional three months of access to the content so that you can use it as a resource once you start teaching. Super helpful when you’re still finding your legs as a teacher!
For 35% off the price of your course, use the code “matt35” at check out!
4. International TEFL Academy
If you’re looking for a TEFL course that features in-classroom training, the International TEFL Academy is probably the best on the market. This is the most thorough and interactive course that you can get without physically being in a classroom for four weeks.
The 170-hour online course is a fully interactive, collegiate-level course taught by a university-level professor. It comes with 150 hours of coursework and 20 hours of student teaching. The course takes about 11 weeks, and you can expect to spend 10-12 hours a week on your coursework. The course is $1,399 USD.
While it is interactive, it’s not taught in real-time, so you can log in at any time to take your classes and do your coursework. Just make sure you meet your weekly assignment deadlines!
5. Vantage
This 120-hour TEFL course is based in Thailand, making it a convenient option if you’re already traveling in Southeast Asia and are considering teaching English.
Vantage focuses on preparing you to teach in Thailand, though it also has a specific course for teaching in China that guarantees a job upon completion. If you’re looking to teach in either country, this is the best program for you.
Vantage offers both an in-person, four-week course and a hybrid course comprising both online training and an in-class practicum (in Bangkok). Prices start at $1,295 USD.
While expensive, in-classroom experience is invaluable. If you have the money, it’s a worthwhile investment.
6. International TEFL and TESOL Training (ITTT)
ITTT has a wide variety of online courses, ranging from a bare-bones 60-hour courses to comprehensive 470-hour courses. Its main 120-hour online TEFL course covers all the basics and costs $239 USD.
However, for an additional $110 USD, ITTT also offers the option of having a tutor to help you progress through the course. If you’re new to teaching and serious about finding a job, I’d suggest the tutor option. Having someone to help you progress through the course will ensure that you’ll get the most out of the course and better prepare you for the job ahead.
A Note on TESOL/CELTA Courses
In addition to the TEFL course, there are also TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) courses. These are essentially the same thing: programs focused on learning to teach English to adults. CELTA is Cambridge University’s branded version of the TESOL and the most in-depth (and most expensive) such course on the market.
Unless you specifically want to work with adults or are certain you want to start a career teaching English, I would stick with just taking a TEFL course. You can always upgrade later if you decide to continue teaching.
TEFL Frequently Asked Questions
How long are most TEFL courses? Most TEFL courses are 120 hours long. They usually last a few weeks to a few months, depending on the schedule. While some courses can be shorter, employers prefer teachers with at least 100 hours of training.
Are TEFL courses done online or in-person? Most TEFL courses are done online, though the best courses also include some in-person classroom time.
How much do TEFL courses cost? TEFL courses start at around $150 USD and can cost as much as $2,000 USD, depending on how much in-class time is included.
Should I do a TESOL or CELTA course instead? A TESOL or CELTA course is specifically for those looking to teach English to adults. Unless you specifically want to teach adults or are looking to start a career (rather than having just a temporary job), I would stick with a TEFL course.
That said, some TESOL courses are essentially the same as TEFL courses and they are marketed together. For those courses, either a TEFL or TESOL will suffice since the course content is the same.
CELTA courses, however, are much more intensive and expensive, usually $2,000-2,800 USD. They are specifically for teaching adults.
Do I need a bachelor’s degree? Having a degree is necessary for some TEFL programs, but not all of them. However, it will give you an advantage in the hiring process and when negotiating a salary.
***
Whether you’re looking to earn money to travel or want to start a new career, teaching English provides amazing opportunities for travel as well as personal and professional development.
By investing in a TEFL course you’ll be much better positioned to get hired in a country of your choosing. Not only that but you’ll have the skills and confidence to succeed on a day-to-day basis.
Teaching English abroad is an incredibly rewarding job and one that I’ve found enriches your travels. I can’t recommend it enough!

"I am happy with the outcome of the course"
“I am happy with the outcome of the course”
Tumblr media
Let’s TEFL review, written by Jules.
The course was pretty much what I was expecting from what is advertised on the Lets TEFL website. You read a chunk of text and then you complete a list of multiple choice quiz questions.
