I chose this particular cologne based on my personal views and how I see Otoya Ittoki. Usually for character merch he has a very delicate and gentle smelling item (lavender usually) but I personally do not think it fits him. Especially now that he is a fiery adult! Do I think he would actually spend that much on cologne? Once... If he is planning to go on a special date or he has to go to a big fancy event he will have this prepared. God of Fire has the scent of smoke and embers. Imagine a wildfire that has reduced it's surroundings to ash. Otoya is a very free spirit and he is full of energy like a burning flame. The top notes are mango, ginger, lemon and red berries (usually this is raspberries) which gives it an upper tropical and fruity smell. Middle notes; Coumarin (a grassy smell mixed with vanilla), jasmine and cedar. Making it very woodsy! And base notes have musk (this usually means fabric, soft and clean), amber, agarwood. The base notes are the raging, smoky flames that will reduce everything above to ash.

You won't be burned by Otoya, although he is much hotter than any sun...

The next one is technically Satsuki, but still Natsuki. But please interpret this however you want. I picked this particular fragrance for many reasons , but I won't bore you to death! Honestly... A fan probably bought this and sent it to the company PO box... The top notes are bergamot and lemon. Which is very acidic and citrusy, like a sudden jolt when you inhale. Crackle even. The middle notes are labdanum(woody smelling resin from a species of rockrose) and amber. This makes it have a very inviting and somewhat... Almost animalistic... In a good way. Kind of wild and a little... Dangerous. But it lingers around because if Natsuki is wearing it there's nothing to worry about... Right? The base notes are vanilla, patchouli, sandalwood, and musk. This is where that charm really shines through for me Natsuki wise. It's delicate and masculine, still inviting and strong just like he is.

Natsuki wishes he could hold you all the time... Satsuki has other intentions...

Unfortunately Cecil is a victim of the green apple craze. I do not think green apple suits him at all it is such a childish thing. Something I would get at Claire's. So I choose this. Which is very simple but I also do not see Cecil as someone who would wear a lot of cologne? This with the light scent of lingering fruit really makes me smile it has a very fresh smell which I really like. Like the scent of your skin when you sunbathe. And finally the base notes are herbals and spices (I don't want to list off all of the plants). When they say spice that actually is in reference to black pepper! Which all together is so wonderful to smell. And Cecil is a prince so of course he smells good.

The fresh scent lingers on your clothes, just as Cecil had hoped!~!

Of course our ice prince gets something ice themed. I did not want to give Masato something expensive like the others just because I don't think he is into luxury items. I am not suggesting the others are... I am implying that he doesn't think to hard about cologne. As long as it smells nice for a meeting he won't mind. The only issue is that this is an alcohol base so he would spray it gently... Leaving a nice fade out. No dousing... The top notes are ice (this is hard to explain but it is the molecule that allows you to smell cold air), lime, sage, and cardamom. So in other words... A store bought key lime pie! I wanted something sweet for Masato since I think he is a very sweet guy, even if he doesn't look like it. The middle notes are cedar, black pepper, bourbon geranium, and lavender. This will reminisce a nice winter walk though the forest! And the base notes are oakmoss, amber, sandalwood, and cashmere. So after your frozen pie and a chilly walk, it's like you've returned to a nice cozy cabin with him at the end of the night...

To think that even Masato could wear something so romantic...

My original choice for Tokiya was something different. However I cannot find the original scent and nor do I think it truly fits the Tokiya that lives in my mind anymore. So, I chose this. It is also not an alcohol base which I think Tokiya would like because he is overly conscious and critical of everything he eats/wears/does. And this is technically pheromones. Not cologne. So there aren't really top, middle and base notes. Just an overall scent. And that would be; lavender, orange blossoms, patchouli and vanilla. And if you didn't know... All four of these are aphrodisiacs. The usual notes used in cologne are made in fact to attract. But these all together are made with the intent to seduce if that makes sense since there are no other ingredients to note. Is Tokiya a sexual character? No. But he is designed and written to have that form of charm without directly saying it. So that is also why I chose this. He is very confident with what he does as an idol. So... He wants you to understand that without him saying it...

Maybe there is some appeal to Tokiya after all... Just kidding...

Syo Kurusu

So... Usually Syo will have a rose scented item. Which... I personally like a lot actually. He is a character designed to not fit into most traditionally masculine stereotypes while still being very masculine. So I chose this scent because it sort of replicates what I think his actual character scent actually is and what he would like to wear. Although I regret to inform the masses that he used to drown himself in Axe body spray... Thankfully he's grown now and he knows that shit was wack. The top notes are Turkish rose, geranium, jasmine and black currant. Very floral and very delicate which is so pleasant when it lingers. The middle notes are pink pepper, saffron, incense, and agar wood. These are spicy and semi-sweet, the balance between femininity and masculinity. The incense offering a powdery-ness that makes it not overwhelming. And finally the base notes are musk, sandalwood, vetiver, and amber. Very sensual at the end, and again not overpowering. I love the balance it has personally and this one was my 'absolute' favorite.

Even though Syo is so strong... He still leaves that rose colored hue behind...

London by Burberry - Notes of Honeysuckle, Jasmine, Musk and Sandalwood. Released in 2006. This is for lovers - of London. The imagery around this chic and clean little affair has always been a romantic postcard to the city that birthed it, and the iconic checked Burberry fabric wrapped around the bottle itself speaks to the rebirth of that heritage trend made edgy and new - most beautifully showcased in the infamous prison gates photos in 2003, where Peter and Carl each wore a matching Burberry trench and passed a Burberry scarf between them. Fake, probably, but that iconography was the absolute height of indie rock fashion.

Bluebell by Penhaligon's - Notes of Lily-of-the-Valley, Cyclamen, Cloves and Cinnamon. Released in 1978. Widely reported as a favourite perfume of Kate Moss during the time she and Peter were dating. I may not be much of a fan of hers, but who didn't want to know what Pete Doherty's girlfriend smelled like? Earthy, with its crushed flowers and herbs, a tad exclusive, with it's fancy lineage and posh price, but genuinely vintage - this was the exact sort of scent an indie girl in the 2000s picked if she wanted to stand out from the crowd.

Opium Pour Homme by Yves Saint Laurent - Notes of Black Currant, Star Anise, Bourbon Vanilla and Cedar. Released in 1995. Named by Peter as his favourite fragrance in the 2000s. I've never known if he was kidding, given the name - but this is a scent that absolutely suits him, and is my favourite for men of all time. Opening with bright, juicy berries, drying down into sweet vanilla and rich spice, it's an addictive potion that suits its moniker and defies the astringent, bathroom cleaner trend in men's fragrance with a high fashion dazzle that takes some courage to wear.

Bottega Veneta by Bottega Veneta - Notes of Bergamot, Jasmine, Leather and Patchouli. Released in 2011. This is a personal entry, as it's the one perfume that has gotten me a compliment from a Libertine. I am an aggressive over-sprayer, but only this one has elicited a comment, from Carl, after he embraced me following the Sharabang gig in 2018. "You smell amazing!" he said, to which I replied, "I think it's the leather", meaning the leather notes in the fragrance. "Leather?" he replied, completely confused. I didn't get a chance to elaborate, but this is indeed a leather bomb - loud like a brand new jacket, or better yet luxurious heels straight out of their box, with the crisp deliciousness of bergamot making it syrupy and lending a mouth-watering air. Tragically discontinued.

Comme des Garcons 2 Man by Comme des Garcons - Notes of Smoke, Betiver, Saffron, Leather and Incense. Released in 2004. One of the fragrances Carl mentioned wearing in the 2000s. A churchy, waxy, smoky scent that brings to mind a snuffed candle and is very evocative of the year it was released. Makes absolute sense that it's one he'd enjoy, leaning both into an esoteric side with it's midnight potions of nutmeg and mint, and a rock 'n' roll core with it's leather and incense - reminiscent of the intoxicating mix of sweat, tobacco and leather you'll find sticking to a musician fresh off a stage.

Ambre Sultan by Serge Lutens - Notes of Resin, Amber, Myrrh, Benzoin, Sandalwood, Vanilla and Myrtle. Released in 1993. Opulent, gothic and very warm, this unisex fragrance is another Carl listed as a favourite back in the day. If 2 Man is churchy, this one is culty. Again, it suits him - it's like festival hippy oil taken to it's most concentrated conclusion. I don't know if he still wears either of these - he smelled great in Melbourne in 2018, but when I asked what he had on, he joked, "Lynx Africa!" then denied he was wearing anything. Likewise, Peter arrived at the Hackney gig in 2019 smelling deliciously of something very like Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille, but when I asked him what he had on, he just said, "I smell like a polecat".

since I´m the biggest perfume-hoarder I know of, it was just a matter of time when the question „What do Hisoka, Illumi and Chrollo actually smell like?“ crosses my mind. The day night has finally come, so here is my headcanon…

❈ Hisoka Morow:

As for Hisoka, the answer was clear to me right from the start: „Lost Cherry“ by Tom Ford. It just has to be! And here is why: "Lost Cherry“ is a fruity-sweetish scent, but not a childish cheap one. In my opinion this perfume is best described as a boozy-almondy amaretto cherry. It is strong, sexy, bold, extremely seductive and intoxicating and therefore it can be even a bit annoying from time to time - just like our beloved jester. Even though „Lost Cherry“ is labeled by the brand as unisex, I find it quite feminine, but I´m sure, Hisoka wouldn´t mind. The fragrance is very unique and I´ve actually never smelled it on anybody else before … and it´s expensive… something tells me, that Hisoka would never smell like something mainstream and will always go with some kind of niche fragrance. Also I´m pretty sure that this man has quite an expensive taste. Tom Ford itself is a bold and luxury brand which also suits him very well. Not to forget that "Lost Cherry" means something on the lines of "lost innocence/virginity" which makes this fragrance a match made in heaven for a horny clown person.

❈ Chrollo Lucilfer:

Chrollo may have a fable for the gloomy and occult and we all know that he can be extremely cruel, but when it comes to the troupe members there´s no doubt regarding his loyalty. Therefore I can sense some kind of warmth that he carries deep down in his dark soul. For him I would suggest „Herod“ by Parfums de Marly. A woody, slightly sweetish and spicy scent with some smokey chords which make it cozy, sexy and mysterious alike. But buckle up, Ladys and Gentlement, just like „Lost Cherry“, this fragrance is a panty-dropper. Thats for sure!

❈ Illumi Zoldyck:

Illumi keeps me guessing tbh. I can imagine two completely different scents for him. Either, I see him wearing a very very heavy, somber and classic fragrance, such as Memoir Man by Amouage or - since he's an assassin and frequently needs to stay unnoticed on his missions - he would prefer a much more lighter, barely perceptible and synthetic scent, perhaps with a clean and even slightly medicinal note. In this case, I immediately had to think of all kinds of molecule-fragrances, since they are somehow present but not at all tangible. With such a scent, Illumi would be able to sneak up not only against the wind, but also with it. Therefore I would suggest a woody-synthetic-molecule for him, just like ISO-E-Super or Ambroxan.

fragrance question for you!! why is it that scents like black opium are so popular? is it bc they're by big luxury brand YSL, or bc of hype? particular notes that work together??? I've been thinking really hard about getting it for myself as a christmas gift this year, but if there are scents that are BETTER (maybe a tiiiiiiiiiiny bit more subtle) I'd love to hear ur thoughts!!

i think ‘paying for the brand’ is so prevalent in shopping these days, and it absolutely extends to the fragrance world too. i personally believe that part of the hype for black opium is because it’s simply YSL, a luxury brand. and its image is marketed at being mysterious and sexy, which tends to sell quite well. being able to afford luxury brands is a huge feat! so logically, you would go for what generally does well.

that said, it’s not all about the name! staples like black opium wouldn’t be staples if they smelt terrible. i think part of its charm is its scent profile. i suppose it’s because the scent family of black opium is more ‘approachable’ and ‘well-rounded’. you’ve got your vanilla and coffee notes blended with a bit of floral and spicy which typically isn’t overpowering for the general user! (as opposed to notes like neroli or oud which some people tend to find polarising or ‘clinical’).

i’ve often seen people describe black opium as ‘addictive’ and ‘dark’ and with all of this into consideration, i completely understand the appeal. like… who doesn’t want a scent that makes people turn around and ask “who was that? a spy? a rockstar? maybe both?!” (knowing what i know about you, even if a little, i do think it’ll suit you. esp with your tattoos ><)

oh! and typically, more expensive perfumes have better ‘projection’ which refers to how impactful it is in a room. black opium will most likely last, i can tell you that much! she’s bold! and if you’re going to spend an arm and a leg, at least it’s worthwhile.

if you want something more subtle but you love how black opium smells, see if it in comes in roll-on or solid form. you get the scent but without giving yourself a headache. those forms are usually better for sensitive skin/noses too.

if you want suggestions for something similar, i suggest

alien by mugler - i believe it’s got that same vibe, only a bit softer. maybe a tad more on the ethereal side, rather than edgy but it’s unique (i personally like this one better than black opium)

coffee break by replica maison margiela - this is a nod to the coffee note in black opium. this one is unisex and lighter. it feels more relaxed. one of my close friends loves this one!

and this one is a complete wildcard but i just wanted to throw it in because of the unique concept. it might interest you! you by glossier - this one is actually meant to adapt to the wearer’s skin so whatever it smells like on you, could smell different on me. i’d describe it as clean and subtle. on me it smells musky and warm but on others, it can get woody or even powdery. super interesting if you want a truly personal fragrance!
