It's not finished yet, but here's one of my first attempts at oil painting on stoneware clay. The clay has been fired first at around 900 degrees, then sanded, clay painted and glazed (at the base only), then fired again at around 1300 degrees I think (aka damn hot) and now I've started painting it.
As I said, not finished yet. I haven't painted the other side of it and I need to add to this side as well. But oil paint has that nice shimmer to it that is hard to get on camera, so in real life the coat already looks pretty nice simply because of characteristics of oil paint itself. I hope this works. I'll probably varnish it in some way once I feel good enough about the paint job.
To be continued...
(Also, this sculpture has a little secret. I'll show it once I'm finished painting it.)
Oil paint on stoneware clay, yes/no?
I've just started playing around with sculpture using stoneware clay. It's really fun, I'm loving it. And sure, glazing can look real good, and there are clay paints that can be used to pait and draw on it. And special wax crayons. There are alternatives.
However.
I really like oil paint. Because of how you can build up layer upon layer, and all the nuances and just how easy it is to work with. So now I wonder if I could use oil paint on stoneware clay.
Notes: This would not be on bowls and stuff that would be used. Only on sculptures that are to be seen but not touched. It also would not be covered with glaze, or in any way combined with anything else. Once I paint on the sculpture with oil paint - no more kiln. (Other parts of the sculpture could have glaze though, just not in combination with oil) The clay would be properly fired, and I don't mean I'd paint on glaze. Although, maybe matte glaze could work. I'd have to try.
So, sculptors and clayshapers of tumblr, do you think it would work? Have you tried? Did it stick properly? Did the clay suck up all oil and the pigments started dusting off? Any experience and thoughts are welcome. :>

Freyr, the unicorn!
I had originally considered a mane instead of a crest but I really like the crest. I love his blue hooves, and his little tail and his lovely horn ✨

"THE UNICORN" SALVADOR DALÍ // 1977 [bronze lost wax process | 22 2/5 × 13 1/5 × 18 9/10"]
"The unicorn is a mythical creature prominent in legends as an intricately linked symbol of purity. The horn of a unicorn is believed capable of neutralizing any poison. This animal also has connotations of chastity and virginity, both male and female, and was adopted as the sign or ideal representation of the 'perfect' knight. In some legends it was also a symbol of virility. Dalí chose to portray the unicorn as a phallic figure whose horn penetrates a stone wall through a heart-shaped opening, from which a drop of blood seems to be slowly falling. The nude, reposing female stretched out in the foreground at the hooves of the animal underlines the sensual nature of this sculpture."

⛓️Togetherness ⛓️
A piece representing queerness and our mutual bond throughout humanity, but also our survival, as seen through a Homo neanderthalensis skull and pegasus guardians. Like the inextricable DNA of the extinct human that remains within ours, LGBT+ people can never be extinguished, and will always be a part of us.
Currently available to view via my exhibition “Shifting Bodies” at the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery until January 14th 2024.
video id: A video of two ceramic, white, horned pegasus flanking the sides of a dark, three walled vase with a white top and handles with chains attached to them. The unicorns also feature chains attached to their collars and illustrated pink pansies decorate their backsides, and are also present on the lower half of the vase. The front of the vase features a neanderthal skull and clovers. The remaining sides both feature a white rabbit, one surrounded by the moon and lavender, the other by the sun and green carnations.
