Thought I’d post this quick found item garden project I slapped together last weekend:
Tumblr media
The stairs were salvaged from one neighbor in late winter—I didn’t need them as stairs and had vague ideas of knocking it apart for the lumber for the new chicken coop/run, but then I found and spray-paint refreshed some old window box-style planters and a different purpose emerged. I salvaged a 4x4 and some 2x4s from the outdoor small remodel of a local bar. Sawed the 4x4 in half to use for “legs” and the shorter 2x4s to brace it (using the screws removed from all this lumber).
Tumblr media
Now I have a nice set-up by the garage for those window boxes.
The green planter has a much-abused purchased begonia (the wildlife would NOT quit digging it up), some red geraniums taken from cuttings from plants I rescued from the dumpster in the fall (potted up and overwintered inside), and some mixed coleus I grew from purchased seed.
The top orange planter has a mix of seed collected from two vining plants on my walks last fall—one is perennial pea vine, the other has a morning glory-like red/yellow flower that I haven’t identified. The next two planters have collected fennel seed (the type you grow for seed instead of vegetables). It would be nice to get some new fennel seed from them, but mainly growing them for the swallowtail caterpillars after having to remove a half-dozen of them from my vegetable fennel earlier in the spring. This way I’ll have somewhere to relocate them where they can survive. The last planter has nicotiana seed that I seed-saved from my own plants. The two plants I overwintered and replanted in the garden started blooming immediately, which was nice to have in early spring and I’d like to do that again.
On an unrelated gardening note, a week and a half ago I found myself with a package of baby yellow waxy potatoes that had sprouted so hard they looked bearded with root hairs. I already had volunteer potato plants at one end of a raised bed I’m composting in this year, so I just went ahead and planted the little potatoes throughout the rest of the bed. It actually does have dirt on top of all the composting stuff since I had extra heavy clay dirt from the new in-ground bed I made from the lawn this spring. I just mixed some of the underlying leaf litter into the clay and plunked them in. Sprouts showed up yesterday and continued to push through the covering straw today. Think I’ll give it a dusting with alfalfa meal before the rain tomorrow night to counteract some of the potential nitrogen depletion in the underlying material (there are a lot of twigs/branches) and just see what happens.

What to Do When the Middle Sags
Ah, the dreaded sagging middle—the place where your story feels like it’s running in circles, or worse, standing still. Many writers hit this wall, but don’t worry—it’s fixable. The middle of your story is the heart of the journey, the place where characters face challenges that set the stage for the climax. If your middle is losing momentum, here are some practical tips (with examples) to reignite the spark.
1. Introduce a Midpoint Twist
Give your plot a jolt by throwing in an unexpected twist that shakes up the status quo.
Example: In The Hunger Games, the announcement that two tributes from the same district can win together completely shifts Katniss's strategy and amps up the stakes.
Tip: The twist doesn’t have to be massive—just something that complicates your characters’ goals and forces them to adapt.
2. Add a Subplot That Intertwines with the Main Plot
Introduce a secondary conflict that deepens the stakes or explores a new side of your characters.
Example: In Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet's subplot involving Wickham creates tension and provides insight into Darcy’s character.
Tip: Make sure the subplot supports the main narrative. It should enhance the story, not distract from it.
3. Escalate the Stakes
If your middle feels slow, it might be because the stakes aren’t high enough. Raise the pressure on your characters.
Example: In The Martian, Mark Watney’s potato crop fails, leaving him with limited food supplies and no margin for error.
Tip: Ask yourself: “What’s the worst thing that could happen to my character right now?” Then let it happen.
4. Deepen Character Relationships
The middle is the perfect time to develop your characters’ dynamics—friendships, rivalries, alliances, or betrayals.
Example: In Stranger Things (Season 1), the kids’ bond with Eleven deepens in the middle episodes, revealing her vulnerabilities and cementing their loyalty to her.
Tip: Focus on moments of vulnerability or conflict that reveal something new about your characters.
5. Introduce a Ticking Clock
Deadlines and time limits add urgency to your story.
Example: In Inception, the middle accelerates when the characters face layers of time running out in the dreamscape.
Tip: The ticking clock doesn’t have to be literal. It can be a metaphorical deadline, like a relationship on the brink of collapse.
6. Force Your Protagonist to Make a Hard Choice
A moral dilemma or a tough decision can reignite tension.
Example: In The Dark Knight, Batman must choose between saving Rachel or Harvey Dent, pushing him into emotional and ethical turmoil.
Tip: Hard choices show growth—or cracks—in your protagonist’s resolve.
7. Change the Setting
A fresh environment can provide new challenges and visual interest for the reader.
Example: In The Fellowship of the Ring, the group moves from Rivendell to the treacherous Mines of Moria, increasing tension and danger.
Tip: Make the new setting more dangerous or unpredictable than the last.
8. Reveal New Information
Introduce a secret, revelation, or piece of backstory that changes the reader’s understanding of the plot or characters.
Example: In The Sixth Sense, the middle is packed with hints and reveals that slowly unravel the truth about Malcolm and Cole.
Tip: This new information should connect to the story’s core themes and drive the plot forward.
9. Focus on Internal Conflict
If the external action slows, delve deeper into your protagonist’s internal struggles.
Example: In The Catcher in the Rye, much of the middle is Holden’s internal conflict about growing up and his isolation.
Tip: Use internal conflict to build empathy for your character or highlight their flaws.
10. Foreshadow the Climax
Use the middle to set up elements that will pay off later in the story.
Example: In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry’s discovery of the Pensieve and his interactions with Barty Crouch Sr. foreshadow the climax involving Voldemort’s return.
Tip: Plant seeds that will leave readers saying, “Oh, so that’s why that happened!”
Checklist for Avoiding a Sagging Middle:
Does every scene push the story forward or develop a character?
Are there unanswered questions keeping the reader hooked?
Have you raised the stakes since the beginning?

Tumblr media
Bucky continued his day, the camera capturing every step of his farm journey. "Hey, everyone! It's Bucky Barnes, and today, we're diving into the thrilling world of farm life," he exclaimed to the camera, showcasing the vast expanse of the fields and the tractor humming in the background. He shifted the camera to reveal the small puppy nestled in his lap, earning an "Aww" from his audience.
As Bucky planted the barley seeds meticulously, he shared insights about the process and his challenges. The puppy, seemingly entranced by the rustling leaves and the tractor's rhythmic hum, added charm to the vlog.
With the barley seeds successfully sown, Bucky moved on to the next task—planting potatoes. He mused to the camera, "Now, this is where having an extra pair of hands would really come in handy. Note to self: consider hiring farm help if I ever figure out how to get my bank account back."
The puppy, content in Bucky's lap, became a recurring star in the vlog, eliciting heartwarming comments from viewers. Bucky couldn't help but smile at the positive reactions and the genuine interest his audience showed in his newfound farm companion.
When lunchtime arrived, Bucky parked the tractor and headed home, pondering what to eat. The realization hit him—he couldn't cook. The luxury of having meals prepared or ordering takeout was a distant memory.
Bucky sighed, acknowledging the need to learn basic cooking skills to survive this farm adventure. He decided to keep things simple for now, opting for something that required minimal culinary finesse.
To his surprise, Bucky entered his house, and Y/N's horse was standing near the entrance gate. He couldn't help but chuckle at the unexpected sight, wondering if the horse had decided to be the official guardian of his newfound home.
As he stepped inside, the aroma of home-cooked food wafted through the air. Samantha, Y/N’s mother, placed a food container on his kitchen counter. She greeted him warmly. Bucky, still holding the camera for his vlog, smiled appreciatively.
"Hey, Bucky! We thought you might need a little help in the food department," Samantha said with a friendly tone.
Bucky chuckled, feeling a twinge of guilt. "I appreciate it, but I don't want to be a burden, getting free food all the time."
Samantha waved off his concern. "Oh, don't you worry about that. Your father has taken care of everything. It's the least we can do to help out a neighbor."
Bucky nodded, grateful for the kindness shown by his unexpected neighbors. The support from Y/N's family was becoming a comforting constant in his journey into the unknown world of farming.
Samantha continued, "You're part of this community now, Bucky. We look out for each other. Consider it a warm welcome."
With a sincere smile, Bucky thanked Samantha and decided to capture this heartwarming moment for his vlog.
But Bucky couldn't help but feel embarrassed as Samantha mentioned that his father had taken care of everything. The realization that his father had prepared not only the essentials for him but also arranged for the delicious meals brought a mix of gratitude and a hint of embarrassment.
Bucky gently put the puppy down, who had already awakened from its peaceful slumber. The little furball seemed to be adjusting well to its new surroundings.
With thoughts of taking the puppy to town for essentials and a check-up, Bucky shared his appreciation for the meal. "These are delicious. If I ever own a restaurant, I'd hire you as the chef," he complimented Samantha.
Samantha giggled at the compliment, but then she dropped a surprising revelation. "Thank you, but it wasn't me who made it. It was my daughter Y/N."
Bucky, mid-bite, raised his eyebrows in astonishment. He hadn't expected Y/N to be the culinary mastermind behind the delectable dishes. The realization caught him off guard, and for a moment, he found himself slightly choked on his food, a mixture of surprise and admiration written across his face.
As Y/N entered with a bag of dog food and a small mattress, effortlessly juggling both items, Bucky couldn't help but be impressed by her multitasking skills. She seemed to carry the weight of responsibility effortlessly, efficiently handling practical tasks.
Curious about the puppy, Y/N inquired, "Where's the dog?" Bucky pointed towards the little furball resting under the table.
Y/N gently picked up the puppy and efficiently settled it on the provided mattress. She then gave the dog milk, showcasing a caring side that caught Bucky off guard.
Observing Y/N's nurturing actions, Bucky couldn't help but appreciate her help. Despite her annoyance at being involved in his farming endeavor, she proved genuinely helpful and caring. However, the pleasant atmosphere turned unexpectedly when Y/N dropped the bomb, "Eat quickly, it looks like it's going to rain."
The news of impending rain dampened Bucky's bright mood. The unpredictable weather added a layer of challenge to his farming adventure, and the reality of rural life began to set in.
As Y/N predicted, the rain arrived, interrupting Bucky's progress on planting the crop seeds. Despite not completing the task, he found solace in the fact that the barley seeds he had managed to plant earlier would benefit from the rain, ensuring faster growth.
Feeling a sense of accomplishment, Bucky returned home to refresh himself. The puppy beside him provided a comforting companionship, making him feel less isolated in this rural setting. The soothing sound of rain outside created a calming ambiance.
Embracing the opportunity presented by the weather, Bucky delved into editing the video he had recorded throughout the day. The rhythmic patter of raindrops against the window accompanied his creative process, adding tranquility to the cozy farmhouse atmosphere.
******
The next day, Bucky felt a sense of ease as the rain had ceased, and the sunrise painted the sky. He savored a homemade breakfast of bread topped with butter, mozzarella cheese, and cherry tomatoes—an extra layer of enjoyment derived from the satisfaction of preparing it himself.
His newfound companion, Archie (he gave the name last night), the adorable male puppy, happily wagged his tail as Bucky set down a bowl of milk, cooing at the joyful scene.
Interrupting this peaceful morning, a knock echoed through the farmhouse, prompting Bucky to open the door and discover who awaited on the other side.
‘Knock, knock!’
Bucky opened the door to find a teenager holding a box. The young lad greeted Bucky warmly and extended the box filled with honey.
“Hi, I'm Tobey. I live with my grandparents, and Grandma asked me to bring these to you,” he explained.
Bucky gratefully accepted the gift, acknowledging the teenager's kindness and his grandparents' thoughtfulness.
As the exchange unfolded, a distinctive sound caught their attention—Archie, the puppy, chimed in with an enthusiastic "woof," adding a touch of canine charm to the moment.
Having finished his milk, Archie toddled over to Bucky with his tiny legs.
Bucky bent down, patting Archie gently. "Hey, Archie."
Tobey observed Archie with curiosity. "He looks..."
Setting down the box, Bucky scooped up the puppy and presented him to Tobey. "His name is Archie. I'm grateful I found him on my terrace. His cuteness made me forget my exhausting day."
Tobey's eyes welled with emotion, and Bucky quickly realized that the box he had brought was likely the same one Archie had been placed in.
"I'm sorry," Tobey admitted, his voice tinged with regret. "My grandparents only allow me to have one dog."
Tobey lowered his gaze, speaking softly, "When Archie's mother gave birth, he was the weakest among his siblings. No one wanted to take him."
Bucky questioned, "Why me?"
Tobey scratched his head, explaining, "Because I saw your car. I thought, this person must be rich. I can't afford to have another dog."
As Bucky looked at the teenager, he reflected on his life, where money was never a problem. Toby, on the other hand, had to let go of something he cherished. Bucky reassured him, "It's okay. I consider Archie as part of my family now."
Tobey visibly relaxed. "Thank you, and I'm sorry."
Bucky shook his head. "It's alright."
He allowed Toby to play with Archie whenever he wanted, realizing that it was a win-win situation for both Archie and Toby.
Then Bucky asked, "Do you know how to drive a tractor?"
Toby replied confidently, "Of course. Everyone around my age can drive it."
Bucky was pleasantly surprised. He then offered Toby a job, promising to pay him for assistance. With that, Bucky found someone to help him with the farm work.
Tumblr media
Bucky's progress in planting the seeds had become significantly faster with Toby's help. With his easygoing personality, Toby became a popular addition to the video vlogs Bucky regularly created for his followers. Viewers liked the dynamic between the two, and Toby's presence brought a fresh energy to the content.
One day, as Bucky and Toby took a break, Y/N arrived with sandwiches and iced tea. In addition to the refreshments, she handed Bucky a weathered journal book that had once belonged to the farm's former owner. Y/N explained that it was a farm journal, a crucial resource for anyone working the land.
"By the way," Y/N added casually, her eyes fixed on her phone, "you've got cow, lamb, and chicken coming in. They'll be here in two hours."
With that information dropped, she swiftly left again, leaving Bucky and Toby slightly stunned. Bucky, who had just finished planting all the crops, now found himself unprepared for the arrival of livestock.
Bucky grumbled to himself, "What a cold woman."
But Toby interjected, "Y/N is really kind, you know? She's helped my grandparents a few times. She even drove them to the hospital when they needed it. That's why I'm saving up money to buy a car."
Bucky felt a twinge in his heart hearing about Y/N's selflessness. He gave Toby a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "You're a good grandson, looking out for your family like that. If there's anything I can do to help, let me know."
As they continued their conversation, Bucky realized there was more to Y/N than he initially perceived. Her kindness extended beyond the farm and, apparently, reached out to the broader community. Bucky found himself intrigued, and perhaps a bit curious, about the woman who seemed to be more than just a neighbor.
As Bucky flipped through the pages of the journal, he couldn't help but wonder about its history. The name "Jonathan L/N" caught his eye on the first page.
Toby, munching on his sandwich beside Bucky, also glanced at the page. "My grandfather mentioned that this land used to be owned by Y/N's great-great-grandfather."
The realization hit Bucky like a ton of bricks. The farm he was now cultivating once belonged to Y/N's family. Suddenly, her distant demeanor and occasional coldness toward him made sense. The land held sentimental value, and Bucky was now the outsider entrusted with its care. It was a responsibility he hadn't fully grasped until that moment.

Monday Musings: Copper and Your Health
Did you know that copper is a mineral that we need in our bodies? In fact, there are several metals we need to live healthy lives. What exactly do we need copper for? A few things actually. It is needed for the normal growth and development of human fetuses, infants and children.
Tumblr media
In adults, it is necessary for the growth, development and maintenance of bone, connective tissue, brain, heart and many other body organs.
Tumblr media
Copper is involved in the formation of red blood cells, the absorption and utilization of iron, and the synthesis and release of life-sustaining proteins and enzymes. These enzymes produce cellular energy and regulate nerve transmission, blood clotting and oxygen transport.
Tumblr media
Copper is also known to stimulate the immune system, help repair injured tissues and promote healing. Copper has been shown to help neutralize "free radicals," which can cause severe damage to cells.
Tumblr media
Despite all its uses, we only need about .9 mg of copper a day. Crazy right?
Where do I get copper in my diet? Copper-rich foods include grains, nuts and seeds, organ meats such as liver and kidneys, shellfish, dried fruits, legume vegetables like string beans and potatoes, chicken and some unexpected and delightful sources such as cocoa and chocolate.
Tumblr media
I don't know about you, but several of those are definitely in my diet.
Okay, next question, what happens if I don't get enough copper in my diet? A deficiency in copper is one factor leading to an increased risk of developing high cholesterol levels and coronary heart disease in humans. Copper deficiencies are also associated with premature births, chronic diarrhea and stomach diseases.
Tumblr media
But of course, there are also risks if you consume too much copper too. It can cause nausea but thankfully, it's really hard to hit toxic levels of copper. Just don't go around eating copper wire and you should be fine.
The last fun fact I have for you is that there are clinical trials in effect right now to see if frequently touched surfaces and air ventilation systems in hospitals made out of copper or copper alloys can help stem bacterial infections in hospitals. Copper has some antimicrobial abilities and they are hoping it can stop infections of deadly diseases like MRSA.
Tumblr media
Initial studies at the University of Southampton, UK, and tests subsequently performed at ATS-Labs in Eagan, Minnesota, for the EPA show that copper-base alloys containing 65% or more copper are effective against:
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
Staphylococcus aureus
Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VRE)
Enterobacter aerogenes
Escherichia coli O157:H7 and
Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Wild stuff, am I right? Who knew copper could be so useful outside of conducting electricity? Hope you enjoyed today's musings. Tune in tomorrow for one last trivia on copper before December is upon us! (I can't believe it's almost December. What happened to November?) Fossilize you later!

I really should have taken a med yesterday. I tried the weighted blanket instead, which did help me get some hours of sleep.
Today is a bit of an intense day, because it's the first official day of work again and we're having a training day. Seems fine, except that it involves every person giving a one hour presentation. 😬
That's actually a bit scary! And so long! Apart from being nervous about speaking, I'm also nervous about listening. So long!
Anyway, I'll be glad when today is over.
I'm still feeling awful. But yesterday I did a tiny amount of gardening (weeding) and also planted some seeds. It's lovely to see things growing! I haven't seen the cat again and I definitely miss her.
I also cooked two meals. Some baked potatoes, sweet potatoes, beets, and salmon - and a dish of leftovers: tortellini, a spinach burger, and some cut up tomatoes with feta cheese.
I'm looking into the "flylady system" for keeping up with the household. It's basically a system built upon routines (and I love routines). I'm hoping it will help to keep things tidy and clean before things have a chance to build up.
I also wrote down what I have to do for work in the upcoming weeks and it doesn't seem too bad. That's what I'm hoping, at least. It just seems a lot to do therapy as well. Last week really shook me. I feel quite inclined to cancel tomorrow, because I don't know if I can handle more of that. I'm still struggling with last week. It felt so unexpected, so raw and heavy. If I could feel it and then recover the next day, it would be a different story. It drags and it seems to chip away at my physical health. Too Much. It makes me feel hopeLESS and not hopeFUL. Alas, I'm probably just scared.

Datura’s Daughter
Tumblr media
Reading Key 🔑
OPEN & LISTEN/READ ALL LINKS. THIS IS FOR UNDERSTANDING.
ALL LINKS ARE UNDERLINED RED
I had briefly read about Datura as a late teen/20-year-old. The plant intrigued me and was always in the background of my walk (studies). She wasn’t of utmost importance to me regardless of Her ever presence. I simply wasn’t ready...until I was.
My stumbling upon Datura in real life was serendipitous and so so unexpected.
August 2019, I was having a full moon stroll with a beloved musical genius. We will call him FireBird.
FireBird and I were discussing the Andromedin star system, and the Arch(acnid)s of Time. He and I tended to get deeply esoteric with each other. He kept up with me AND expounded upon conversation to the point where I found myself having to keep up with him. Despite the craziness of our connection, he and I were kin in that way. Hearts that sincerely sought to be One with Mystery.
Selene in Her fullness beamed down on us. Crickets sang their song, and East Atlanta’s humidity cloaked our skin.
We’d came across his neighbor’s house like we did a million times before, but I guess this night the neighbor’s Datura blooms were at peak ripeness just for us to see.
The flowers held their faces up towards the moon. Their sentient, Gramophone petals bellowing out Her intoxicatingly quiescent aroma. I gasped. Literally. In awe.
FireBird was off put, but I told him it was Sacred Datura, and he trusted my giddy response. Omg FireBird, I read about that plant before, see! Come on!
I innocently went over to the neighbor’s yard and inhaled with my whole lung. I picked a flower and nectar spilled over my fingertips. I eagerly put the flower in his face for him to inhale and experience Her as well.
I was ignorant that an inhale + nectar absorbed through skin alone will send you on a trip- though not nearly as deadly as ingesting the seed. Things got creepy, crawly, hilarious, scary, and <<*~FreaQQy~*>> (freaky::frequency), to say the least. An unplanned Datura encounter is an initiation in and of itself. This animalistic plant tends to stay with you. Your shadow is the humectant, and Datura is the moisture. I have learned that it is possible to come across certain plants and be inside their vortex
indefinitely.
Four years have passed, and I have been inside Datura’s Fib0nacci ever since- with less intensity as time goes on.
Here is some of what She’s revealed to me

Vision Quest & Flying Ointment
Datura (Thorn Apple, Jimsonweed, etc.) belongs to the Solanaceae family- the same family as tomatoes, potatoes, and bell peppers. She is a weedy perennial, with large trumpet blooms, and stanky, menacing leaves. Solanaceae is unique in that several species contain the presence of strong alkaloids. Alkaloids are multifaceted organic plant compounds, and can be toxic to humans in even low amounts. Within Datura are three tropane alkaloids: atropine, hyoscyamine, scopolamine. Of the tropanes in Datura, hyoscyamine tends to have higher concentration; however, depending on the species + time & place of harvest, tropane concentration may vary. Datura’s alkaloids (as with all Solanas) effect the body in a host of ways, but the most common are pupil dilation; reduced secretions from respiratory, urinogenital, salivary, and other mucosal glands; effects on the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system; rapid increase or decrease in heart rate.
Datura is a deliriant under the hallucinogen umbrella. In the offshoots of reddit, one can find the r/Datura community where users describe their Datura horror stories. Deliriants (aka derailments) trigger erratic behaviors that can endanger others or self, strong hallucinations, hysteria, an inability to realize that one *is* hallucinating, vivid dreams, memory loss, true dysphoria, and more. Unfortunately for most...Datura’s hallucinations are that of a waking nightmare. Ain’t nothing cute and lighthearted about Her.
Despite Datura’s terrifying association, She has been recorded for medicinal and spiritual purposes amongst various groups throughout the world. I find, as with most toxins and venoms, that the cure is hidden within the poison. It is painfully clear that earlier generations were aware of this knowledge when compared to modern people’s haphazard use of Datura. It seems as though, for the same effects tropane alkaloids cause, they can also relieve them as well.
Datura (+ Her other tropane containing sister flowers) assist with: easing migraines, pain, & muscle spasms; curbing mucosal excess; rectifying cognitive problems stemming from spine injury; settling motion sickness & nausea; regulating cardiac arrythmia; unraveling violent PTSD and sexual traumas; and even calming asthmatic fits (when smoked). Speaking of smoke, ain’t it funny how Datura is in the same family as Tobacco? A common hallucination people report is that cigarettes appear out of thin air- and they have a smoke. Once they’re done smoking, the cigarette reappears again, and they are compelled to do it over again. Is it that during this hallucination, the body is attempting to regain control over respiratory function? Who knows...
According to Kymia Arts, fire neutralizes tropane alkaloids, and ol plant lady Emma Dupree states here (@ minute 13:13) that dried Datura leaves “help em get they breath.”
In homeopathic practices, specialists name those who could benefit from Datura as a Stramonium person.  In extreme cases, this person has a deep fear of the dark, fear of danger, homicidal tendencies, an aversion to water, reflective surfaces, and being alone. They can be epileptic, manic, rageful, and schizophrenic. In mild cases, they can be dyslexic, have poor speech, or muscle ticks. I intuit that Datura heals these ailments because spiritually, this person is already in Her realm...and only She can reclaim & set you free.  She allows one to overcome their fears by *leaving* it at Her doorstep. For She eats fear and all arcane things for dinner...
On the inverse, Datura intoxication causes extreme dry mouth/throat, extreme thirst, speaking in tongues/babble, auditory phantoms, incoherence, loss of motor function, inability to read, inability to *perceive* danger, and (hopefully) temporary madness...
As I said before, Datura has been used worldwide by a wide range of groups. According to Pharmako Gnosis, the Tsonga of South Africa “use Datura fatuosa in girls’ initiation ceremonies for exorcism. After the ingestion of a decoction of Datura root, the ceremony is marked by dancing, rapid drumming, disrobing, and the invocation of a blue-green pattern of the ancestor spirits” (p. 248).
One of Kalifornia’s indigenous tribe Chumash were known to use Datura ritualistically as well. For them, the main purpose of Datura consumption was to receive the gift of a dream helper. The Chumash chose the female Datura plant, dried Her root, and chewed the dried root during winter [Saturn’s season::Datura’s planetary ruler]. It is reported that their ceremonies with Datura were called Vision Quest (in Chumash Mother Tongue of course). One can even find the term Vision Quest in modern media; a prime example is in the suspense-horror film “Us” directed by Jordan Peele. There is a reoccurring scene where small girl is sent to a creepy mirror filled “funhouse” with the banner Vision Quest over the top. That “funhouse” is akin to a Datura trip...
Tumblr media
In India, the powdered seeds were mixed with butter and taken internally for impotence as well as being applied to genitalia to obtain sexual vigor (Lewis 1977:330). Referred to as the tuft of Shiva, the god of destruction, Datura was also used in the form of a liquid extract by thugs - worshipers of Kali, the goddess of fertility and death - to stupefy sacrificial victims. The plant was also given to young girls in India to bring them Into prostitution as well as on their clients (Siegel 1989:21). The leaves were smoked as well in that country to relieve asthma (Lewis 1977:395).
Datura metel. Phytognosis.
In European traditions, plant women were known to create flying ointments containing Datura or another tropane containing Solanas. It is possible that the creation of flying ointments are a part of why women during that time were accusing of “flying on brooms.” It is said witches would apply flying ointments to their brooms, or even to their vuvlas for aphrodisiac effects.
“All of the tropane plants were major ingredients in various “flying ointments,” along with sundry other dangerous and nefarious substances such as water hemlock (Cicuta virosa), hemlock (Conium maculatum), monkshood (Aconitum napellus), opium poppy (Papver somniferum), soot, baby’s fat, bat’s blood and poplar (Populus spp.) Pharmako Gnosis. (245).
Another hallucination people have reported is a feeling of flying, or the sight of levitating beings. I attribute the flying sensation to an increase in heart rate. Interestingly, I have a hunch that users may also be experiencing the essence/spirit Datura’s primary polliantor, the nocturnal Sphinxmoth.
Tumblr media
Now I want you to take the time to read this. Below is an instagram caption from artist and chemist Bryan Lehto of Bio Temple Hawaii.
This amino acid (Tropane) plays a critical role in a variety of biological processes, from the formation of bird feathers to the synthesis of tropane alkaloids and the production of polyamine spermidine. The presence of ornithine in nature is a reminder of the intricate connections. Birds are perhaps the most well-known source of ornithine in nature. This amino acid is a critical component of the keratin that makes up bird feathers. Ornithine is an important precursor to the synthesis of the amino acid arginine, which is used to make the keratin that forms feathers. Without ornithine, birds would not be able to maintain their distinctive plumage and would be unable to fly or regulate their body temperature. Interestingly, ornithine is also a precursor to the synthesis of tropane alkaloids. These are a class of organic compounds found in a variety of plants, including belladonna, henbane, and jimson weed (Datura). Tropane alkaloids are known for their psychoactive properties and have been used for medicinal and ritual purposes such as flying ointments for centuries. The presence of ornithine in these plants that underlie their pharmacological effects. Their poisonous berries are spread by birds. Ornithine is a precursor to the synthesis of the polyamine spermidine. This compound is found in all living cells and plays a crucial role in a variety of cellular processes, including DNA replication, protein synthesis, and cell division. Spermidine is involved in the growth and development of plants, as well as the maturation of sperm cells in animals. An intermediate in the biosynthetic pathways of both tropane alkaloids and spermidine are the compounds of putrescene and cadaverine, the odors of death. If we look at the metaphors present in the biological processes of the amino acid ornithine, we see not only the metaphor of flight but the leitmotif of death, the underworld, and the resurrection of new life.”
Cool rite?
Let’s keep going...
Vampire Squid from Hell
When Datura (or any other powerful plant) takes you into its vortex, intel about its occulted aspects finds its way to you without overt searching. She made it clear soon after our encounter that She is a land-dwelling expression of a cephalopod named Vampyroteuthis Infernalis, or Vampire Squid from Hell.  Vampyroteuthis Infernalis hasn’t had many extreme changes over the course of its 350-299 million year existence. It is considered a living relic, which means the genetic wisdom of this creature is still intact for us to observe and understand.
One can detect the energetics of Datura in the location, and physiology of Vampire Squid.
Vampire Squid dwells in the Mesopelagic Zone of the Ocean where oxygen becomes sparce. This deepening end of the Ocean is coined the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). The Mesopelagic is also attributed the phenomena of twilight. Lingering sunlight wanes rapidly into darkness, and temperature sharply declines as depth increases. The lines between the surface waters and the abysmal deep begin to transition here. Let’s consider the Ocean’s surface, or Epipelagic Zone as Datura’s inviting flower, and the abysmal home of Vampyroteuthis (OMZ) as Datura’s Lethal Alkaloids. Dawn. Dusk. Twilight.
Tumblr media
Organisms that live in this level begin to display bioluminescence. Their eyes & physical form take on an
alien, strange appearance.
Tumblr media
Vampire Squid reportedly has the largest eyes in the animal kingdom, an adaptation needed to capture any glimpse of light in the endless black seas. It’s 8 arms are webbed and tipped with bioluminescent photophores. The underside of its webbing is decorated with fleshy spikes. When irritated, Vampire Squid will cloak itself in its arms, exposing these spikes. It not only takes on the shape of Datura’s inflorescence, but also Datura’s radical seed pod.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This blue-blooded cephalopod lives primarily in a resting state. Due to such low oxygen levels, it must maintain a low metabolism to conserve energy, and even possesses certain enzymes associated with anaerobic metabolism. The likelihood of Vampire Squid coming across live prey is rare- and so it feasts on detritus (decay, feces, mucus, “marine snow”) that sink from the Ocean’s surface.
When reading about Vampire Squid, one fact that stood out to me is that they have “weak musculature but maintain agility and buoyancy (in the OMZ) with little effort due to sophisticated statocysts (balancing organs akin to a human's inner ear)(Wikipedia). Recall Datura’s aforementioned Gramophone petals? And Vampire Squid’s webbed arms? Don’t they look like triplets? What’s the connection?
Here are some field notes:
Oxygen Minimum Zone::OMZ::Ohms::℩::OM:: H0me:: The Highly Contagious Viral Realm of Shadows:: Consequence of Datura’s toxic alkaloid scopolamine that causes respiratory failure [OXYGEN IS SPARCE]. Alchemist Kymia Arts states that the plant can cause one to suffocate themselves, as they drift off unconsciously into delirium. You won’t realize you’re drowning.
Gramophone::Grandma Phone::Recordings of the Crone [Saturn; ruling plant of Datura]. Hell’s Record Keeper.
Download:: Datura somehow has a mechanism on the human inner ear (statocyst, Vampire Squid buoyancy) causing auditory hallucinations
the intoxicated victim is finally able to hear the sounds of their own inner hell. Their internal Oxygen Minimum Zone.

One night, a long time since that East Atlanta evening, I was tending to my garden. I had my playlist on shuffle. The song Throw Yo Sets in Da Air by Three 6 Mafia came on. I peeped my little Jimsonweed Datura dancing to it, specifically to the first verse given to us by the late Gangsta Boo, the Devil’s Daughter, and my inspiration for Datura’s Daughter. She gave me a wink and said She liked that verse! Haha. And so, from that day, Gangsta Boo’s verse has become what I call Datura’s Chanting Prayer. Linked below.

DISCLAIMER: I do not promote or recommend ingesting Datura AT ALL. Datura CAN and WILL kill you. Datura can cause PERMANENT psychosis/schizophrenia, blindness, and damage to the heart, liver, and kidneys. If ingested/applied topically, it must be done with the assistance an EXPERIENCED plant professional in THERAPEUTIC DOSES ONLY. Therapeutic doses are EXTREMELY diluted or combined with other alkaloid balancing compounds.
DO NOT INGEST DATURA. She is not a psychedelic. She is a DELIRANT in even moderate doses. For experiences similar to mine, sincere and respectful communing with a live Datura plant is all that is necessary. You can still be impacted (spiritually) by Datura without taking that risk...
DO NOT work with Datura if you are not ready to mature and deal with the recesses of your unconscious mind, the places you don’t touch...where oxygen is low...and detritus is nourishment.

Garden Report 24.05.19
Transplanting things: pole beans, sweet peas (ikr... still?!), and flowers for the front garden like lineria, godetia, red rocket snapdragons (sorry @meegan420 there is a snapdragon shortage aka nursery people that are buyers of only the new trendy but this coming Tuesday promises to maybe have 'standards'. I'm determined to plant one for you! my mission this Spring!), a few violas in The King Henry old fashions, and two little dinky style pumpkins. I don't know if the snails will find them but I decided on a whim to get them after discovering something again went and ate all my cucs and winter squash seeds just at germination. I don't want to give up veg patch for dinkies but run the risk of snails or near harvest time, bipeds taking them. But hopefully the bees will have a chance to at lest enjoy the flowers.
The mice are nibbling on the potatoes. I think I may just let them go. Its a lot of work to harvest right now. I might just fish around to find a few to eat and replant the nibbled on.
The bean and sweet pea experiment along the hazel nuts has taken an unexpected twist. The rains stopped abruptly so no soft soaking drizzle and the potato mounds are not releasing moisture into the separating cardboard. I may have to find a soaker hose or have someone rig up some of the recycled drip system because everything got too dry while I was not being out there during the winds.
For some unexplained reason, there was no edible pea seeds available. No one carried them this Spring. Like, this is a staple... what's the problem? Mary gave me several bits of her hoard. Frugal tip: you can go to your green grocer/ organic foodstop and buy 'sprouting' peas and grow those -- you just may not know the variety or how long they take but they are definitely cheaper than garden packets so if you have a longer growing season -- do it!
So much weeds and transplanting at such a slow rate of speed. You can't even call it speed ;) I do more sitting than working. For those of you that don't like to use an asthma steroid inhaler but finding a need on occasion, my GP has me use essential oils (I use Gyalabs breathe blend; she uses thyme for her asthma symptoms) because I can't use steroids. Talk to your GP or Naturalpath if this could help with your respiratory health. I don't get kickbacks, just sharing what works for me :)
So much is blooming and Spring is in all her glory! Hope you are enjoying the days. If you can't get out and garden, at least get out in Nature or take a walk enjoying the season.

7 out of 10 fava beans are up!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And so are the Sweet Annie and Alyssum (4 days since sowing).
Tumblr media
It looks like the yellow pansies I pulled out of the green waste dumpster last year are coming back. These are sprouting from the original roots, not from dropped seed, which was unexpected.
Tumblr media
Here's one of the crimson clovers that is sprouting from dropped seed. You can tell the difference from white Dutch clover because the leaves are fuzzy.
Tumblr media
Pulled the straw away from the strawberries today. Looks like I have three surviving plants, so less than 50%. Definitely moving them to a different bed all by themselves, particularly as the spearmint is taking off. I knew the fennel was very allelopathic, but recently learned that mint is moderately so. The two of them can duke it out for this bed.
Tumblr media
Lettuce in the east cold frame (sorry about the glass glare), living their best life. Will probably transplant at least half of these to the tunnels to give them more room.
I potted up the germinated tomatillo seed and about half of the tomatoes last night. Probably will be able to do the remaining tomatoes tonight.
Resowed poblano seed as despite using the pre-germination method, only one of six cells actually came up. I have had the most trouble with poblanos despite using seed I bought just last year. I have one overwintered plant (out of three) that's surviving so far but it's pretty spindly. If I had the money I'd just give up and buy transplants for this one this year and conduct a search for seeds for a more vigorous strain.
In addition to the spindly poblano, two jalapeños and two biquinhos have survived overwintering. I've moved them up from the basement to a warmer room with south-facing window so they start to leaf out. I'll take them outside mid-April to harden off (throwing an insulating blanket over them at night) prior to planting in early May.
I need to move a few of last year's sweet potatoes up from the basement to give them light and humidity to encourage sprouting. Hopefully two months is long enough for slip production for sweet potatoes that haven't been sprayed with anti-sprouting compound. Still want to buy slips for purple sweet potatoes, but maybe next year.
Also need to direct sow peas and carrots this afternoon. Which means I need to set up the three big rectangular containers with their olla and pvc trellis tower. And soak the peas for a few hours. And pull out the net bag to go over the trellis towers so the squirrels don't steal all the peas.
Busy busy busy...

Rapeseed Oil Market: Sees Global Growth Amid Rising Health Trends and Biodiesel Demand Surge
Rapeseed oil market, derived from the seeds of the rapeseed plant (Brassica napus), has established itself as a significant player in the global edible oil market. Its favorable nutritional profile, versatility in culinary applications, and expanding industrial uses have driven its demand across various regions. This article delves into the current state of the rapeseed oil market, exploring production trends, consumption patterns, health benefits, industrial applications, and emerging challenges.
Tumblr media
Global Production and Leading Producers
As of 2021, global production of rapeseed oil reached approximately 26 million tonnes. Canada, Germany, and China emerged as the top producers, collectively accounting for 43% of the world's total production. Notably, Canada led the export market, shipping around 3.1 million tonnes, which constituted approximately 74% of its total production.
Regional Consumption Patterns
Asia-Pacific: This region dominates global consumption, with China and India at the forefront. The rising middle class, increasing health consciousness, and expanding food processing industries have fueled demand. In China, rapeseed oil is predominantly used for frying foods, while in India, it holds a traditional place in culinary practices.
Europe: European countries utilize a significant portion of their rapeseed oil production for biodiesel. France, in particular, stands out as a leading producer of biodiesel, driven by stringent greenhouse gas reduction measures and the promotion of zero-emission vehicles.
Health Benefits Driving Consumer Preference
Rapeseed oil is celebrated for its health benefits, which have significantly influenced consumer preferences:
Low Saturated Fat Content: It contains lower levels of saturated fats compared to many other cooking oils, contributing to better heart health.
Rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These essential fatty acids are crucial for cardiovascular health and brain function.
Vitamin E: The oil is a good source of Vitamin E, an antioxidant that supports skin health and immune function.
These attributes have led to its widespread adoption in cooking, baking, and as a base for salad dressings and margarine.
Industrial Applications Beyond Culinary Uses
Beyond its culinary applications, rapeseed oil has found substantial use in various industries:
Biodiesel Production: Its favorable chemical properties make it a preferred feedstock for biodiesel, especially in Europe. The push for renewable energy sources has further amplified this demand.
Cosmetics and Personal Care: The oil's emollient properties have led to its incorporation in skincare products, including lotions, creams, and soaps.
Market Challenges and Environmental Concerns
Despite its benefits, the rapeseed oil market faces several challenges:
Climate Impact on Cultivation: Unpredictable weather patterns, such as unexpected temperature rises, have affected rapeseed cultivation. For instance, in India, soaring temperatures have led farmers to shift from rapeseed to other crops like wheat and potatoes, potentially reducing rapeseed planting areas by 10% from the previous year.
Trade Disputes: Geopolitical tensions have influenced trade dynamics. China's imposition of tariffs on Canadian rapeseed oil, in retaliation to Canada's tariffs on Chinese goods, exemplifies how international relations can impact market stability.
Environmental Concerns: Large-scale rapeseed farming often involves monoculture practices, which can deplete soil nutrients and increase vulnerability to pests. Additionally, the use of fertilizers and pesticides raises concerns about water pollution and biodiversity loss.
Sustainability Initiatives in Rapeseed Cultivation
In response to environmental challenges, there is a growing emphasis on sustainable cultivation practices:
Crop Rotation and Reduced Tillage: These methods enhance soil health and reduce erosion.
Integrated Pest Management: Minimizing chemical pesticide use helps protect beneficial insects and reduces environmental contamination.
Water Management Strategies: Efficient irrigation systems and drought-resistant crop varieties are being adopted to optimize water use.
Market Outlook and Future Trends
The rapeseed oil market is poised for continued growth, driven by:
Health-Conscious Consumer Trends: Increasing awareness of healthy eating habits is likely to sustain demand for rapeseed oil.
Renewable Energy Policies: The global shift towards sustainable energy sources will bolster the biodiesel sector, further increasing rapeseed oil consumption.
Product Diversification: Innovations such as cold-pressed and organic rapeseed oils are capturing niche markets, catering to consumers seeking premium and environmentally friendly products.
Conclusion
Rapeseed oil occupies a significant position in the global edible oil market, underpinned by its health benefits, versatility, and industrial applications. While challenges such as climate variability, trade disputes, and environmental concerns pose threats to its production and trade, ongoing sustainability initiatives and evolving consumer preferences present opportunities for growth. Stakeholders across the supply chain must navigate these dynamics carefully to ensure the continued prosperity of the rapeseed oil market.

Getting the front bed ready for spinach and potatoes this weekend. Going to rake, weed-whack, rake again, and then get on my bloody hands and knees and hunt for the damned blackberries I know are hiding. Fighting back blackberries is a CONSTANT struggle here. They grow wild everywhere, so the birds shit their seeds across every inch of land.
Even though the bed rested and overgrew with native plants last year, I still pulled out dozens of canes every couple months.
Also dumping all my depleted pot soil out in the bed, along with any herb seeds that feel like coming along for the ride. potatoes don't do well in soil that's too rich, they rot, so it's fine it's depleted. It's going to get leaf mulch dumped on top, and then as potatoes are harvested the soil will be all mixed back up again.
In my 'dead' herb pots I've still got tons of volunteer chives, oregano, and one very stubborn thyme plant that has been baked twice by unexpected heat waves and keeps coming back. I figure it deserves a chance to run rampant, so it will be transplanted to a corner of the garden to fix the soil, with my sad pathetic volunteer lavender in the opposite corner. Sometimes gardening is just chucking stuff into new soil and hoping it prefers it.
I don't expect this wee sad lavender to survive, but genuinely you never know. This irritatingly sloped bed already has a very lovely heather along one edge, which does a fabulous job soil fixing, but we expanded it during some driveway repairs, so we need more plants to cling to the dirt so it doesn't wash away.
Now all I have to do is find a human sacrifice so the spring doesn't get too hot and ruin my spinach.

A well-planned survival garden layout is the answer. We'll guide you through choosing the right crops, positioning them for optimal growth, and making the best use of your available space. Whether you're working with a small backyard or a large plot of land, we'll help you create a thriving garden that can sustain you through tough times. With a tailored survival garden layout, you'll gain confidence and peace of mind, knowing you have a reliable food source. Ready to get started? Let's dig into the essentials and unlock the potential of your garden together! ```html
Survival Garden Layouts: Grow Your Own Lifeline
When the world throws a curveball—be it supply chain chaos, inflation, or an unexpected zombie uprising—your food security shouldn't be left to chance. A well-planned survival garden isn’t just a hobby; it’s a strategic asset. And trust me, without a plan, you’ll end up with a chaotic mess of overcrowded plants fighting for nutrients like kids scrambling for candy.
Why Layout Matters More Than You Think
Most people assume they can just dig up a patch of dirt, toss in some seeds, and call it a day. That’s a one-way ticket to disappointment (and possibly starvation). A smart layout maximizes space, enhances soil health, and ensures your crops support each other instead of competing.
“A survival garden isn’t just about growing food—it’s about growing the right food, in the right way, for long-term resilience.”
The Best Survival Garden Layouts
Different layouts serve different purposes, and what works for a suburban backyard won’t necessarily work for a rural homestead. Here are three tried-and-true designs that balance efficiency and sustainability.
1. The Grid Layout (Simple & Organized)
If you like clean lines and easy maintenance, this one’s for you. Crops are planted in neat rows or raised beds, making weeding and harvesting a breeze. Just be sure to rotate crops each season to avoid soil depletion.
2. The Permaculture Layout (Nature’s Blueprint)
This method mimics natural ecosystems, using companion planting and layering to create a self-sustaining food forest. It requires more planning, but the payoff is huge—less watering, fewer pests, and better long-term productivity. Bonus: It looks wild and beautiful.
3. The Survival Efficiency Layout (Max Yield, Min Effort)
Designed for pure survival, this setup prioritizes calorie-dense foods like potatoes, beans, and squash. It often combines vertical gardening with intercropping to squeeze every ounce of potential out of your space. Efficiency is the name of the game here.
Final Thoughts
Planning your survival garden layout is the difference between thriving and just getting by. I’ve learned (the hard way) that a little foresight saves a lot of headaches—and hunger pangs—down the line. Read more on how to get started today.

It’s a brand-new year which means industry soothsayers have peered into their crystal balls to bring us their best predictions for the top 2025 food trends. As we’ve traditionally done at the outset of each year, we’ve looked at what the forecasts and projections show and how these overall trends might influence what people choose to consume in the coming months. While locally grown, sustainably produced and nutrient dense foods will always be the hallmark of Down to Earth’s farmers markets, here are some notable trends that are worth exploring to help introduce diversity to your table and keep dishes fresh, fun and interesting.
Super Saucy  Who doesn’t relish extra sauciness? According to New York Times food critics, sauces will be a national obsession in 2025, especially those with global flavors. Thanks to the surge in post-pandemic travel that exposed people to a wider range of international cuisines and exotic foods, consumers’ palates have broadened as they seek to recreate the tastes they experienced while vacationing abroad.
Tumblr media
Sauces are a great way to insert flavor, moisture, and visual appeal into your meals, and can also enhance foods texture and nutritional value. Try topping plain baked fish or chicken with a spoonful of spicy salsa, roasting cauliflower in a creamy bechamel sauce, or giving extra zing to pasta, eggs, salads, soups and sandwiches with this easy to make kale pesto.
Crunchy is Cool Crunchiness is set to reign supreme as the texture of the year, so we’ll see crunchy elements popping up in all sorts of unexpected edibles. You can’t go wrong with the crunch factor as it makes foods satiating by requiring more chewing and stimulating and engaging your palate. Luckily, you’ll find plenty of crunch-filled foods and seasonings in our farmers markets this winter.
Hardy winter vegetables are the kings of crunch! Cold weather causes plants like carrots, parsnips and cabbage to convert some of their starch into sugar to lower the freezing point of their cells and protect them from frosts, much like a natural antifreeze. This defense mechanism firms up their structure by trapping more water inside resulting in a crisper, crunchier texture. These vegetables also taste sweeter in the winter due to their higher sugar content, which is known as cold sweetening.
Nothing beats the crunch brought to you by Dr. Pickle's briny, tangy, zesty pickles! Choose from sweet gherkins, cornichons, pickle chips and whole pickles in a variety of flavors such as hot & spicy, half or full sour, horseradish, flaming dill and more. Serve crunchy pickles with burgers, brats, hotdogs, charcuterie boards and sandwiches or chop them into deviled eggs, potato and tuna salads for some bright acidic zing.
Roasted winter squash seeds are a perfect vehicle for adding satisfying crunch to an array of sweet and savory dishes. Everyone’s tried pumpkin seeds, but did you know that you can roast the seeds inside any squash from butternut to delicata to acorn? Almost all winter squash are great candidates for seed roasting. Plus, squash seeds are chockful of fiber, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals so why let them go to waste? Instead, turn them into something delicious with this easy tutorial.
Tumblr media
Transform a bowl of plain yogurt by showering it with Blissful Table’s crunchy, healthy granola. Their granola started with one flavor, the "OG", which quickly grew to over twenty seasonal and special edition blends. All Blissful Table’s granolas are made with a base of rolled oats from River Valley Community Grains in New Jersey and use a three-grain blend including quinoa and crispy brown rice. Each small batch is sweetened with pure maple syrup, local honey or agave and every bag is hand packed with love. It's even an ingredient on their label.
Slowcocoa’s cacao nibs are unlike anything you've ever nibbled on. They’re made from the cacao bean, which is the seed of the cocoa tree fruit. The beans are fermented, dried, and roasted to develop their flavor, then crushed into small pieces. Think of them like unsweetened chocolate chips, with an extra crunch and loaded with antioxidants, magnesium, potassium, iron and fiber. These nibs are yummy enough to nibble on by the handful. Or try a sprinkle atop your favorite smoothie or salad bowl, oatmeal, cereal, ice cream, or even in pastas or baked goods.
Luxx Chocolat’s Luxx’K Pistachio Caramel Krunch Bark with Kadaifi has the crunch built right into its name! Decadent fine category 72% dark chocolate (cacao Venezuela) is filled with their award-winning classic pistachio caramel and studded with organic pistachios and toasted Kadaifi phyllo pastry. All of this deliciousness is perfectly accented with rosemary-infused sea salt.
The Lentil Co. is on a mission to bring extra plant-based crunch to your life in 2025! Their exceptional collection of distinctively crunchy, tasty snacks featuring mung lentils, millet, lotus seeds and other exotic ingredients are delicious as standalone treats or when sprinkled on top of salads, curries, casseroles and soups. Plus, they’re high-fiber, high-protein, vegan, gluten-free and non-GMO to boot.
Protein Primetime Protein is one of the three macronutrients—fat and carbohydrates being the other two—that the body needs in large amounts to function properly. Fueled by the popularity of gym culture, impact of fitness influencers and growing number of Americans on weight-loss medications who need extra protein to maintain muscle mass, high-protein diets are currently all the rage. Protein is also increasingly being consumed by individuals looking to maintain energy levels throughout the day and support their overall health and wellness goals. In addition to its role in muscle growth and repair, protein promotes feelings of fullness, which can help with weight management by reducing overall caloric intake.

When increasing your protein intake, consider the big (health) picture and opt for nutrient-dense, whole foods that deliver a package of diet benefits. Lean cuts of grass-fed meats and pastured poultry are good options, as is fish of all kinds as the fat content in seafood is unsaturated so even high fat fish like tuna and mackerel are healthy choices. Other protein-rich items you can find in the farmers market this winter include pastured eggs, yogurt, Great Joy Family Farm’s handmade tofu, chickpea hummus, The Lentil Co.'s ready-to-cook lentil mixes, and Wave Hill Breads and Orwashers Bakery's whole grain breads. Regarding the latter, you may be surprised to learn that two slices of whole wheat bread contain the same amount of protein as one egg!
Nothing Sour About It Sourdough saw an uptick in popularity during the pandemic, when many chefs and home cooks tended to sourdough starter cultures during quarantine. Sourdough bread is rich in nutrients, easier to digest than white bread, and contains prebiotics which feed the good bacteria in your gut. Since 2020, sourdough has spread beyond bread, so we are set to see sourdough applications in all sorts of recipes in our farmers markets this year including cookies, s’mores, pizza crust and bagels.
Badass Bagels’ sourdough bagels are entirely different from a standard yeast bagel. They’re light, chewy, crunchy, and end with a tang. Badass Bagels begins each batch with a rye flour-based starter that has become very happy and active – so active that it often bubbles, expands and takes over the counter it’s resting on. This special culture allows the bagel dough to be naturally leavened without using commercial yeast. Many people with gluten sensitivities say that they can enjoy these bagels without issue. Or you can enjoy their gluten-free bagels, which are now available to pre-order (ask at the stand).
Wave Hill Breads’ Wild Yeast Sourdough Miche, Sourdough Batard, Sourdough Baguette and Sourdough Boule are made onsite at their artisan micro-bakery. They believe in making delicious, hand-crafted European-style breads and pastries by using a traditional age-old approach that requires a three-day process from mixing to baking in small batches. Wave Hill Breads pride themselves on using locally sourced organic grains which are personally milled at their baking facility to enhance the freshness, flavor and quality of each loaf.

Orwashers Bakery's Chardonnay Miche is a classic French country loaf, reinterpreted with a mix of different sourdough starters that provide a satisfying and complex flavor. Their sourdough bagels are made with a heritage sourdough starter and steamed instead of boiled. The end result is a bagel that is chewier and more complex than your standard NYC bagel.
We hope you enjoyed this preview of the top 2025 food trends predicted to influence Americans’ eating habits over the course of the coming year. While consuming a balanced, sustainable and healthy diet is always advisable, sampling current food fashions within the context of farmers market shopping can be a fun way to refresh your recipes, introduce new ingredients, experiment with unfamiliar foods, explore different cuisines, and keep yourself out of a food rut this winter.

Transforming holiday meals with a touch of furikake nori
While holiday meals are a time for tradition, they also present an ideal chance to experiment with new flavors and update a tried-and-true menu. Including Japanese flavors, especially with furikake nori, may turn ordinary holiday recipes into unforgettable culinary adventures. Furikake is a flexible garnish that enhances the umami flavor of many meals, not just sushi. When families get together around the Christmas table, every dish—from appetizers to main courses—can be made even better with a dash of nori komi rice flavor.
The versatility of furikake nori
Japanese seaweed flavoring furikake nori is created with sesame seeds, salt, and occasionally extras like fish flakes, chopped almonds, or spices. Although this seasoning's original purpose was to improve the flavor of rice, its applications have grown well beyond this. Furikake adds a classy yet understated touch to dishes over the holidays, when everyone is trying to make them stand out. It complements flavor profiles without overpowering the foods' inherent flavors, blending well with a variety of cooking techniques.
Starters and appetizers
The mood of the meal is set by holiday appetizers, and adding furikake food to these little nibbles gives an unexpected touch that your guests will adore. For example, a pinch of nori komi rice seasoning can be added to deviled eggs, a party staple, to add crunch and taste. Similarly, a furikake topping turns a plain cream cheese spread on crackers into a gourmet treat by fusing the creamy cheese flavor with the crunchy, salty overtones of the seasoning.
Main courses
Furikake can be used as a crust for baked fish or as a rub for meats for the main course. Furikake nori can be used to season a classic roast, be it beef, chicken, or turkey, before it is roasted. The nori gives the meat a flavorful, crispy exterior that makes it juicier and more appetizing. Furikake is also beneficial for main meals that are vegetarian. An alternative that's festive and nourishing is a roasted cauliflower head that's been drizzled with olive oil and dusted with furikake.
Side dishes
A variety of side dishes make any holiday meal complete, and furikake is especially good here. For an umami twist, sprinkle nori komi rice seasoning over glazed carrots or buttered green beans. Furikake may elevate a basic rice pilaf into a remarkable side dish that goes well with both Western and Eastern cuisines. Furikake can be added to mashed potatoes to give them a new lease on life and a variation from the usual gravy topping.
Desserts
Furikake isn't usually thought of when talking about desserts, but when used sparingly in sweet contexts, it can be interesting. To excite the taste buds, try chocolate truffles coated with a sprinkling of furikake and cocoa powder, which creates a contrast between sweetness and salt. Alternatively, furikake can be lightly dusted over vanilla or coconut ice cream to create a delightful and surprising dessert.
Conclusion
Furikake cuisine is a simple, elegant way to add a little taste of the world to holiday meals served at the family table. Furikake nori's savory, salty flavor goes well with a lot of different foods, giving it a flexible option for any festive cuisine. Furikake can be added to sweets, mixed into sides, rubbed onto meats, or sprinkled on appetizers to create a memorable and distinctive touch for your guests' holiday dinners. Furikake stands out as a must-try addition to this year's Christmas cuisine as families aim to combine tradition with fresh, exciting culinary trends.

I picked this as a side to go with some chicken and wild rice that my dad made, and it turned out to be an unexpected hit!
I halved it using regular paprika (I really need to get some smoked in this house) and red onion, ultimately (and sadly) skipping the ginger since I couldn't find any (not even ground). The pumpkin seeds I toasted myself in the saucepan I used for the dressing.
I'm not sure that my dressing ever fully emulsified, but I don't think it really mattered, as it sat waiting for some time, resulting in some oil separation anyway.
This really did turn out amazing — lots of great flavors and textures (I mean, I would die for roasted sweet potato), hearty yet also light. The dressing was a little oily for my tastes, but otherwise this was perfect. My mother has brought it up several times since!
