In a bustling city where the rhythm of life played out in neon lights and busy streets, there existed a haven known only to those who stumbled upon it. Hidden amidst the concrete jungle, it was a place where the energy pulsated with an intensity that could only be described as illicitly good.

As the sun dipped below the skyline, casting an orange hue over the city, a door beckoned to the curious. Behind it lay an underground club, a realm of euphoria where laughter and beats intertwined seamlessly. The atmosphere inside was a magnetic force, drawing in people from all walks of life who sought refuge from the monotony of the everyday.

The music, a fusion of genres that defied categorization, was a siren's call, luring in those hungry for an escape. The dance floor was a canvas of movement, bodies swaying with the intoxicating melodies. No judgments lingered in the air; it was a space where the weight of the world seemed to lift, and joy became the only currency.

Amidst the crowd, souls converged, connected by the shared desire to immerse themselves in this forbidden bliss. A group of friends found themselves at the heart of the revelry, strangers becoming allies in the pursuit of this elusive utopia. Conversations flowed effortlessly, tales of mundane existence left at the entrance.

Book Review #143 of 2023--

Unexpected Endings by Elena Aitken. Rating: 1.75 stars.

Read on December 17th.

I'm keeping my review short since this was a short story that was less than 20 pages long. The whole thing was one huge miscommunication trope that drove me crazy from page one. This follows the main characters from the first novella as they return back to the lodge where they fell in love. But he's drowning in work and secret plans to propose and she's left to get worked up about how their relationship feels off since he went out of town for business a few weeks ago. It was so stupid and drove me up the wall. Thank god it was so short. The only reason it got as high of a rating as it did is because I still like those two characters well enough.

Story Prompt 49

In a quaint little neighborhood, nestled among the trees and chirping birds, there lived a curious soul. This person, hidden behind curtains and peeking through blinds, found solace in observing the lives of others. Every day, they would watch from their window, unnoticed by the world outside.

One sunny afternoon, the mysterious observer spotted something unusual. Across the street, in a house bathed in sunlight, a couple engaged in an animated conversation. Their gestures were lively, their laughter infectious. But something about their interaction seemed off. It wasn't the typical banter of lovers or friends; it was tense, almost strained.

As the days passed, the observer became increasingly intrigued by the couple's peculiar behavior. They watched as arguments erupted and reconciliations followed. They witnessed tears shed and smiles shared, all from the safety of their hidden vantage point.

One evening, as dusk painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, the observer noticed a change in the couple's routine. They began to spend more time apart, their once animated conversations replaced by silence. It was as if an invisible wall had been erected between them, dividing their once harmonious relationship.

Unable to resist the urge to delve deeper into the mystery unfolding before them, the observer decided to take matters into their own hands. They ventured out into the twilight, their footsteps silent against the pavement.

Approaching the couple's house, the observer hesitated for a moment before ringing the doorbell. To their surprise, the door swung open, revealing the couple standing on the threshold.

"Can I help you?" the woman asked, her voice tinged with suspicion.

The observer hesitated, unsure of how to explain their presence. "I-I'm sorry, I couldn't help but notice… I mean, I've been watching… from across the street," they stammered.

The man exchanged a knowing glance with the woman before stepping forward. "You've been watching us?" he asked, his tone laced with curiosity.

The observer nodded, feeling a surge of embarrassment wash over them. "I know it sounds strange, but I couldn't help but notice… things seemed different between you two."

The woman's expression softened, and she exchanged a glance with her partner. "Come inside," she said, gesturing for the observer to follow.

Do y’all ever think about how if Lu Guang finally breaks the time loop and saves Cheng Xiaoshi, the initial sense of accomplishment and peace will most likely be overcome with a lifetime of intense paranoia and anxiety because he’s deathly afraid that maybe it’s not actually over, maybe someone or something is still after them, or maybe there’s just a random tragic accident waiting to happen at any point in the future, or maybe he and Cheng Xiaoshi and Qiao Ling are destined to live a quiet life from now on, but the problem is that he’s never lived past this moment before and has no idea how to cope with simply living like a normal person and so the fear of the unknown slowly drives him mad? Because I do 😌

AHHHHH hmm. This… is a good question…. maybe I don’t notice because I can usually spot plot twists in fics a mile away, and the only one I didn’t, I didn’t finish the fic because I hated the twist and it just ruined the whole story for me (this was like YEARS and YEARS ago, I don’t recall the fic anymore). 

EDIT: Ah, second thought, these ones did surprise me on who the suspect was or what have you.

Anyone have fics they would consider having a plot twist or unexpected ending?
