Uneasy Lies the Chosen of Farore (revised)

Chapter 30: Galileo

And then he has a thought. Has his entire life just been divine manipulation?

This stops him cold. He wonders if he should pursue the thought further, and decides if he was meant to be bold, then why not?

But what if...

He'd wrapped his hands around a holy relic when he was sixteen, and that act let the goddesses know he had arrived, and maybe they planted the idea of leaving his miserable home with the promise of adventure. Or even just escape? And he could be close to Hylia reborn, just in case? How far did it go? Did Farore tip his senses to that moblin that killed his horse and broke his leg, leading him to a position where he would be wrapping his hands around that same sacred relic until it decided that yes, his service was required?

He furrows his brow at the implications. How far the other way? Was he born to parents who said they loved him, of course they did, but treated him as a problem and inconvenience at every turn so that when a chance to leave presented itself, he was more than ready to take it?

You think you make your own choices, and make your own paths, and it’s a wonderful delusion, but so much is already set before you even put your boots on.

Fic Recs - Expanding Hyrule Bingo!

If you're looking for some hot fresh recs that you may not have seen before, boy do I have the post for you!

For the last few days, I have been compiling answers for the @expanding-hyrule TBR Bingo Community Challenge! If this is the first time you're hearing of it, EH is a LoZ fandom project that intends to popularize a tag and create an archive for Original Legends, or LoZ fics, art, etc that create their own version of Hyrule, characters therein, and plot different from the canon games. The Bingo Challenge is a project to get people viewing and talking about more of these stories!

Of course, as a chronic overachiever when it comes to fandom, I got blackout on my bingo card. And because several of the works I counted aren't yet in the Expanding Hyrule Fic Archive, I felt this would be the perfect way to get the word out about even more cool works!

Link is a general in the Hyrulean Army, Ganondorf is his best friend and second in command, and Zelda is a brunette princess. Think Star Wars meets Starship Troopers but starring our favorite LoZ characters. The latest chapter has some tooth-achingly sweet fluff mixed in with the angst. Love Coffeebits character designs and Abby’s writing.

D1 - A new favorite - Hero by @karama9 This is one I probably wouldn't have read, but I'm glad I did! It's set in a dystopian Hyrule, with fresh and unusual characterizations for Link and Zelda, that I loved. Link is so timid, he's afraid of his own shadow and Zelda is just a girl who has to push him into accepting his role. They work together as a team to save Hyrule from Ganon. I highly recommend it. I will warn there is one chapter that features graphic material that may be disturbing to some. (but having read this story fully, as a reader it can be easily skipped.)

D4 - A genre I love - The Promise by @zeldaelmo Bridgerton meets LoZ in this one. Regency characterizations of Link and Zelda that I adore. Link is as awkward and sweet as we expect him to be, and Zelda is as witty and intelligent as always. Zelmo just posted a deliciously spicy NSFW chapter for those of us who like that sort of thing 😅😂

D5 - Picked because of the title - Princess Link: Engaged to my sister's kidnapper??? by @sparkspsps I can't wait to dive into this one. A role swap and from the title and summary it sounds funny and something I'd really like.

E1 - A complete project - Goddess of Secrecy by @amelias-hart I've really enjoyed following Link and his main companion, Endeavor on their journey across Hyrule. It's a co-op story, and Link receives plenty of help along the way so he doesn't have to face anything alone. Vast worldbuilding and lots of new and quirky characters really bring this story to life.

E4 - Less than 1000 hits or 100 notes - The Princess's Heart by @nocturnalfandomartist I followed along with this story Noct wrote for Zelink Week last year. Each chapter opens with a portion of a fairytale that is passed from generation to generation - then jumps into the narrative that follows Link and Zelda on their latest adventure.

E5 - Left a review in EH's Story Spotlights - The Mage's Lantern by @nocturnalfandomartist - another by Noct that I've only just begun reading, but am enjoying so far! Hyrule is buried beneath snow caused by a storm called The Silver Tempest (cool name). Beautiful art accompanies each chapter.

I'm insane about this comic I'm crazy I'm crazy I'm crazy!!!!! I've been following it for around five years now and I'll never get enough of Link and Ganondorf just goofing off. On my hands and knees begging people to read this please it's so underrated. probably THE best characterization of Ganondorf I've seen in a long-running comic I'm dead serious he's great-- the perfect mix of pretty awful but has a begrudging respect for link (finally. after years...) The Beedle gags...Cia and Lana being silly lil sisters...

I started reading because I was interested in Link's personality and I haven't been disappointed. He's pretty cool! I like that he's already an experienced adventurer and honestly I'd read a bunch of chapters of him and Zelda just chilling because they're neat. I haven't read enough to fully understand the plot besides, well, spoilers, so there's plenty of mysteries to be solved still.

22. What scene in [Fanfic Name] took the longest to write? What was difficult about it?

NGL Pas de deux was one of the smoothest writing processes ever along with Playgirl!

I'm having a massive pain with the current chapter of the Golden Chain AU. I was not content with the part I had written, so I restructured some parts and discarded some situations and dialogue. Teaser: Zelda has always questioned her role as princess/priestess/blood of hylia incarnate and all that jazz, but hasn't unpacked much about it. It's time for some generational trauma and emotional damage to delve into that!

Chapter 26 On the Road

Link takes a quick look around. All of the horses have come to an abrupt stop and are focused on the road before them. Impa’s horse is jigging and working up a foam as she shortens her reins to try and hold him. Epona flips an ear in Impa’s direction for a second before flicking it back forward and she snorts again, feeding on the anxiety of the other horse. She shifts underneath him, and he gets ready for her to bolt. So much for spook-proof.

Impa’s horse half rears and she grabs a handful of mane. “What’s gotten into them?”

“Something we can’t see or smell.”

Liro is on Link’s right, and his mount bounces on its front end twice and then rears straight up. The guard remains mounted, barely, but when the horse comes back down, it whirls and bolts back down the road in the direction they rode in. This is the final straw for the rest of the horses and they erupt in panic, scattering.

Ok, I love October and I like this list. For the next few weeks- let’s call it the month of November- I’ll take prompts for short fic and I’ll publish them here and in an AO3 collection.

Give me a prompt and a character or two. I am most familiar with Breath of the Wild, Age of Calamity, Skyward Sword and Ocarina of Time, but I’m happy to work in my Mature!Link AU as well. I’ll consider other AUs as well.

4. total number of words you wrote this year

Oh, this is hard math because I forgot to keep totals when I started and how much edits have added. So roughly:

GoS: 100k finishing it + ~20k so far in edits

MoaH: ~10k in editing the first 23 chapters + 800k new words written in the omnibus

For roughly 930k so far. I'm aiming for a million before the year's out. I got 150k last month with Nano, so I think I'll make it.

12. favorite character to write about this year

I lied, I wanna do this one again. Can we talk about MoaH Zelda because oh my god I love her! What a legend. She is amazing, I would never be able to meet her, she's terrifyingly intense.

15. something you learned this year

More life lessons? From me? Sure.

There is only one wrong way to create and that is to not create anything. A bad first draft is still better than nothing being made at all.

19. any new fics to start next year

Well, book 2 of MoaH will start releasing, but I'm on track to start writing book 4 pretty shortly into the year. And at current pace, probably hit 5, 6, & 7 next year too. Plus hopefully a GoS pause to get my other three imported over.

Reading wise, I've got a list as I'm working through the EH TBR. Adjustments as more works are added to EH, of course. That's a lot of links to grab, forgive me in directing folks to @expanding-hyrule's archives instead of linking them all again here.

28. longest fic you read this year

I think the longest fic I read this year was Hero by @karama9. I've been saving most of the longer fics on the EH TBR for later though, so my early next year is stacked with some heavy hitters and I'm super looking forward to it. Longest comic was yours, @alternate-triforce. Both works with high recommendations.

To celebrate fic back Friday, here are some of my favorite fics that I’ve read within the last year in no particular order. This got really long, so the fics are under the cut

sew my lips closed (i’ll tear your heart) by The-Immortal-Moon (LunaKat)--a fluffy, funny fic where Ed comes out as bi to Winry while drunk off of his ass and it makes me laugh every time I read it. Go read it.

The House That Ed Built by ArtemisRae--Ed builds Winry a house while leading up to their wedding. It’s filled with fluff, healing, and there’s a pretty nice house at the end.

Galeotto was the book by luffywhatelse--a wonderful slice-of-life into Ed and Winry’s friendship as little kids. It actually reminds me of a friendship that I had when I was around their age, and it’s a good feel-good fic

Names (or Scar’s Worst Nightmare) (or, No, you can’t die for someone platonically) by GuestPlease--I have read this no less than five times and each time I read it I end up in peals of laughter. Royai wedding, Edwin shenanigans (mostly Ed’s fault), Mei and Scar, Scar and Miles, Scar and everyone. The ending is super sweet as well.

A Little Pinch by @wrongnote--I would be remiss if I left out one of my favorite Edwin fics. It’s an excellent insight into Ed and Winry’s character with an interesting twist on a soulmate au and how everything pans out is *chef’s kiss*

your dust from mine by @mithrilwren​--Teahaw was wonderful while it lasted (aroace Cad for the win tho), and this is a fairy tale au which is something that I don’t see too often. A friend and I actually read this at the same time, and we’d scream/text each other whenever it updated and our thoughts on the latest chapter. There is so much I could say, this one is definitely amazing.

Serendipity by wrongnote--Again, another favorite. I absolutely love the ambiguity of this one and that it leaves a lot of unanswered questions, but it’s written in such a way that the characters truly shine.

A Sanctuary, Safe and Strong by hufflepirate--PARENTAL. GROG.

Uneasy Lies the Chosen of Farore by @drsteggy--this one explores a reincarnation where Link is in his 40s and where pulling the Master Sword is a complete accident. I read this in about a day, and it’s just so real and relatable and good.

Breathe by @quirkle2--I’m just going to copy some of the tags here because they’re so good: i wrote this as sort of a challenge, to see if i could write an entire oneshot about Link being guilty, without ever using the word “guilt” once

Vanilla, Soft Touches, and Thick Blankets by hiya_zelda(hiya_girlie)--easily one of my favorite fics. The imagery is spot-on and it’s pure, shameless fluff, and I’ve read this multiple times.

Narcolepsy by Salt00--A Linked Universe fic that explores Sky’s (oft headcanoned) narcolepsy, written by someone who actually has it. This was a phenomenal read and Sky’s emotions and how he expresses them in the fic are wonderful.

Orenda by DaydreamingDuma--a Vox Machina post-campaign where the gods of Exandria talk to Grog, Keyleth, and Percy about their souls and the afterlife. I love this fic so much, I think I talked about it for an hour straight to a friend of mine as it was still updating because the themes and the conversations are so good... and the god who gets Percy was surprising, but almost expected at the same time. A happy ending, obviously. They deserve it.
