It's very curious to me that Starkwall uses fire to burn down any alchemically dangerous locations and projects (such as the Institute, the Oxford People's Trust and maybe others I'm forgetting).

Sure, fire is deeply destructive and efficient, but in the alchemical worldview it's also a source of life. Solar fire is what keeps everything rolling in the world, and its impure form in sulphur is associated with souls in humans. On a less philosophical level, fire is also required for almost all alchemical work because of its transformative qualities. The Great Work begins with burning matter down to ashes so that something new can be created (which is why the Philosopher's Stone is often symbolised by a phoenix). Some alchemists even thought that sulphur (or the principle of combustibility) was needed to coagulate mercury to give it form (a task they repeatedly failed at).

So it seems like a considerable risk that their protocol involves indiscriminate arson. In fact, it's starting to seem more and more likely to me that the Archivist was created because of the fire. It could've been the spark that coagulated all of the Institute's mercurial ideals and goals into a physical form, possibly tying them to a host (who would be the salt in this formula). But this is pure speculation. The fact remains that the Starkwall guys seem either incompetent and uneducated on what they're actually dealing with, or actively malicious. (Or the secret third option, which is that it's not that deep bro)

"Genre is a dialogue" also explains why early installments of any genre always feel weird - they just were written in another dialogue.

Not necessarily because "the founders were original while modern writers are copycats" - originality and unoriginality coexist both in classics and in airport novels.

For example, Bladerunner is a foundational cyberpunk "text" that has very little of cyberpunk cliches. But not because it's some great artistic vision from beyound - it's because it was written as relatively standard sci-fi neo-noir, and just happened to become a starting point for a new conversation.

The second fic idea is a what-if scenerio where Jimmy dies in the crash due to and altercation with Curly and how Curly would navigate being Captain once he has to notice the little things and how he and Anya's relationship develop as he adopts an identical view point to hers rather than just keeping the peace.

Undercooked thought of the day:

Alternative theory of seemingly sudden success of liberation movements is that they depend on communication.

Liberation requires mass-scale organized action of people who by default at a disadvantage. Otherwise oppressed people try to "escape" as individuals, like slaves during Spartacus rebellion.

Another thing is that bigger groups of oppressed people can do woth more primitive means of communication. That's why abolition of nobility happened first.

This is not a perfect mathematical theory because liberation movements frequently go through waves (women achieved suffrage and extension of rights in early 20th century, emancipation about in the middle, and still struggle for true liberation) and there are some flukes or oppressions that weren't overthrown but just went obsolete, but still.

Internet is not the solution to all problems yet because communication is not just media, but it's definitely a foundation for something great

So, truthfully, Starburst's feelings on Wheeljack are a bit... complicated.

On one talon, he looks like he'd be REALLY fun to hang out with. Lots of loud music, seems close to Miko and Bulkhead (which she really likes hanging out with them!) But also- he is a tad bit smelly to her sensitive Predacon olfactory sensors, and he keeps making WEIRD FLIRTY COMMENTS to her dad!! Ew!!!!

Realistically though, she doesn't know that he was the one who lit the metaphorical match at Shockwave's lab- and it honestly... may be better that way.

FORMER BEST FRIENDS WHO WERE PRESUMED DEAD, GOT AMNESIA, WERE MANIPULATED INTO A ROLE, ANTAGONISTS, HOMOSEXUALS, SEEKING REVENGE FOR SOMETHING THAT WASN'T WHAT IT SEEMED, MASKS, STUBBORN ASSHOLES WITH LOFTY DREAMS WHO ARE HURTING, VICTIMS OF DECEPTION, HOMOSEXUALS

There are so many similarities in their characters between the two of them. I do like [TGAA] more than [MM] though (I don't like him to begin with), but they are pretty similar. Intense, ambitious motherfuckers. Both tricked by a higher power into blaming someone innocent, someone who was, too, hurt by the same tragedy. Still grieving. Both faced with the protagonist and their unwavering faith in them, which is what eventually pulls them out of the shadows the manipulator concocted. The best friend got into their career to honour them, to continue what they started! While grieving them!

There are some key differences in them, though, I'm not saying they're the same character – nothing further from the truth. But they seem to fit a very specific archetype. The whole "we were best friends, you are my enemy now + you forgot me + i thought you were dead + i continued your path" thing. Quite the mouthful.
