I know both. My gran (born 1911) had the fitted sheet, a thin sheet (I'd go under), and a kind of thick blanket that was very pretty and thus did not go in a cloth bag 🤣 that thin sheet was tucked in all around and I had to slide under it like some human caterpillar. I was buried under layers of fabric. I liked that.

My own bedding experience is the one described as "German" here. Fitted sheet, and a duvet which is basically like a huge, thin pillow 🤣 both are put in washable cloth bags. The fitted sheet is fitted around the mattress, the duvet is not.

If confronted with those thin sheets, I will also pull them out and use them as an underblanket. I will drape them around me upon waking up as if I was in a movie.

My Nan died a few years ago. I admit that I took some of those thin sheets and I use them as light blankies on the couch in summer. I miss my nan.

Either way, I'd tuck you in. Make sure all the layers are as secure as you want them to be. I'll shove your blanket under your body a little so it feels like a pillowy hug.

I'm always soooo interested in the difference in bedding between the US and northern Europe (I don't know about other parts of Europe tbh) :D I don't know what a top sheet is, so you go under or over it?

I have no idea about Europe, but in the US sheets (and pillowcases) come in a set, there’s the fitted sheet that obviously goes on the mattress, and then there’s a flat matching sheet that goes on top of that, with your comforter or whatever as the top layer. When you get into bed you slide in between the sheets. That is in fact where I am now.

You see them in movies all the time, that thin layer of bedding that’s always pulled up for modesty or whatever.

Google tells me people aren’t using them anymore because they’re annoying and don’t stay in place but that’s just a matter of tucking it under the mattress at the foot of the bed; I never have that problem, and I’m a pretty restless sleeper.
