bin auf der arbeit. hab mir nen homoöpathischen kaffee gemacht. ich trink nie kaffee auf der arbeit, weil der eh nicht hilft. ich rühr den mit ner gabel um weil wir keine sauberen löffel haben. mein erster patient ist zu spät. ich denke über adam und leo nach.

the creative use of language

Earlier today I went to the botanical garden with my language tandem partner, which was wonderful. And I had so many thoughts which I do want to ramble about, however I am currently typing with the new keyboard layout so it’s really slow going. (You can see it in the use of curly quotes though, I’m so happy!) This puts a bit of a damper on my usual ability to just gush, but it’s actually an interesting experience. (With proper training I’m going to be such a menace though!)

So… we always talk a lot about how to say all sorts of things in our respective languages, albeit on different levels because her German is pretty solid whereas my grasp of Turkish is tenuous at best. And I often find myself saying “well it’s not wrong but nobody says it like that” but also “well I would probably say it like this”, and really this is where language gets interesting! Stuff that’s grammatically correct but “you don’t say it like that”.

And I realised a couple of things. Firstly, that I often use odd turns of phrases in my mother tongue (which is German), and that the people I regularly talk to are all folks who appreciate that and happily join me in making up fun new words or outrageous plural forms – remember the memorandibles? It’s memorandibles all the way down with me. Funky language nonsense galore. And I mean, what is even the point of language if you don’t use it creatively?

Secondly, I seem to do that in Turkish a lot too, but for different reasons. My friend often says “I understood you but that’s not how you say it”. For example we were looking around the greenhouse with the useful plants, those have a lot of extra informational signs along with their labels, but one of them didn’t. So I said “hiç harf yok” because those were the words at my disposal, and she laughed and started to explain the difference between yazı and metin, along with how a normal person would say “there’s no sign”.

But the thing is. I wouldn’t have said that in German either. I wanted to express my disappointment that there were no letters. It is specifically the shape of letters, those little glyphs that whisper to me. I am addicted to these traces of writing! I can‘t walk past a bunch of letters without wanting to read them.

And currently I am very annoyed at English because “letter” has a double meaning and I just can’t make the sentence convey the same sentiment! But in German I can say “es hat keine Buchstaben” and in Turkish I can say “hiç harf yok” which as far as I understand is a super literal translation.

Basically this:

Meaning I often intentionally say things in a slightly weird or different way because I am bringing myself as fully as I can to the table. And that includes all my quirks and weirdnesses! (Can‘t wait to be able to do this intentionally in Turkish 😜)

… and thirdly… I don’t think I do this as much in English, actually. I wonder why…

will in teil 7 so unbedingt sehen, wie leo "workaholic" hölzer während seiner genesung richtig leidet weil er am neuen fall nicht mitarbeiten kann und dann den draht zu adam nochmal stärkt, damit er sich irgendwie in die ermittlungen reinwieseln kann

ich glaube wirklich nicht das überhaupt jemand adam/pia will. spatort fans sind für die homoerotik da und normale tatort schauer haben in der regel keinen bock auf das privatleben der kommissare im spatort weil die da sowieso nicht mitkommen. da wurde jetzt ein bisschen das wasser getestet und in der nächsten folge wird das ganz schnell wieder vergessen!
