“In this day of communication, many books have catered profitably to those who believe they can train a dog while they hold him accountable only for those actions they approve, and write off the transgressions with, ‘He didn’t understand—he really wants to please.’
Offended? You feel a deriding finger is being pointed at the sentiment so many nice people have shared!
Let’s check the ‘[always wants to] please’ theory against the demonstrations of a large group of dogs. An obedience class will do nicely. [..]
The instructor tells the class that if obedience is needed most at moments of distraction or emergency, it would be stupid for a member to alibi a dog’s misconduct with ‘he’s so excited’ [..] The instructor points out that a dog’s respect of slack in the leash proves that the handler has instilled the quality of attentiveness, as surely as a taut, restraining, cuing leash indicates a lack of effective training. [..] Before signaling the start, the instructor cautions the handler against the cruelties of light, nagging, unauthoritative corrections that, by their ineffectiveness, condition the dog, physically and mentally, to greater resistance. [..]
'Faust, heel.' No glance down nor invitational tug accompanies the command as a young woman steps out, makes a square turn, and moves smartly down between the lines. The big German Shepherd, ignoring the insults and advances of his classmates, does not challenge the slack in the leash as he focuses intently on his non-communicative handler.
Six more times the instructor chooses a handler and dog to walk between the lines. Six more times we see the willing start, the dog’s respect of the slack, and the prompt sit. [..]
The instructor nods toward the far end of the lines. A man’s voice asks, rather than commands, ‘Hans—heel?’ [..]
Jerking his restraining, over-balanced handler with him, [Hans, a Boxer] jumps at each dog that comes into his focus. [..] Progress on the path between the lines is made possible only by the fact that the frustrated Hans seeks fresh opportunities in that direction. Hans is uninfluenced and even contemptuous of his master’s restraining. [..]
When Hans is within one lunge of the rumbling Dane, the instructor raises his voice above the Boxer’s air-starved gasps and growls, ‘Stop and sit him.’ [..]
Futilely, Hans’s suffering handler strives with the big Boxer. ‘Hans, sit—sit. Sit, boy—sit.’ Hans, delayed by the man’s panicky efforts, rears up and mouths at his hands.
‘Would you like to pet or praise him?’ the instructor asks. ‘Or,’ the instructor asks, holding out a small box, 'would you like to offer him a tid-bit?’"

JAM ON TOAST
for @jilymicrofics / february prompt 25: jam / words: 200
“I forbid you,” James insisted, entirely unauthoritative. Lily looked him up and down, trying to decide what most ruined the effect. His owl-speckled pants might have done it, or the glasses sitting askew halfway down his nose. But neither stood above the smear of red lipstick and jam across his mouth.
“Do you?” Lily scraped the knife along her toast unbothered. It was what she had been doing before he’d intruded, sweaty and glistening from a morning flight. “Tell me off, then.”
“Lily.” His voice strained. “You can’t do this.” A ward kept him from the kitchen, ostensibly to prevent him dripping mud on the pristine tiles. Though with his robes pooled on the ground, it really made no difference.
“Breakfast first,” she chirped, setting the reddened knife on the sink. “It’s the most important meal of the day, you know.” James whined. Lily bit into her toast and circled the bench, coming within his reach. He reached out, carefully piercing the thin enchantment and skimmed the light cotton of her pyjamas. She tutted and nudged him away. “God, you’re desperate.”
“Completely,” James agreed. Lily licked a smudge of jam off her fingers.
“Shame about the waiting, then,” she grinned.

The key to understanding the original American system of government is really in understanding just this one paragraph penned by Founding Father Thomas Jefferson. He said, “The several states composing the United States of America, are not united on the principle of unlimited submission to their General Government; but that by compact under the style and title of a Constitution for the United States and of amendments thereto, they constituted a General Government for special purposes, delegated to that Government certain definite powers, reserving each state to itself, the residuary mass of right to their own self Government; and that whensoever the General Government assumes undelegated powers, its acts are unauthoritative, void, and of no force.”
The problem is, almost no one in America understands this in modern times. So, the monumental task before us is, how do we teach this to the masses and to the millions of immigrants coming from totalitarian countries and regimes who have absolutely no concept of this form of government?

Same sex, interfaith and interracial couples no longer have government protection in this shithole excuse for a state.
This is beyond evil.
The Tennessee government has stated “Any court decision purporting to strike down natural marriage, including Obergefell v. Hodges, 576 U.S. ___ (2015), is unauthoritative, void, and of no effect.” So the state is saying they don’t have to follow the Court. (https://www.capitol.tn.gov/Bills/111/Bill/SB1282.pdf?fbclid=IwAR2EYbe5gpv858Clo2UuO3gdJdFNEEsb6VFuP1is7EVpUWmXyPUfxwnD2Vc)
So the state of Tenessee is in a state of insurrection.
Send in the troops. Arrest, charge, try, and give the highest punishment possible for all of these traitors.

What is The Fastest Way To Increase Domain Authority?
Since 94% of the website doesn’t receive any reviews, the webmasters are now more focused on improving their domain Authority and Page Authority to ensure a good customer experience. The DA PA is a matrix set by Moz SEO that evaluates the likelihood and worth of a website.
Hence, if you want to improve Google rank of your website, you need to first focus on your Domain Authority. The Domain Authority can be checked by the DA PA Checker Tool. You can check the DA PA, backlinks, and competitors' authority using this tool.
Therefore, it helps you plan different strategies to increase your Google ranking. Moreover, it also helps you to focus on the setbacks in your content and check what’s capturing the market.
But how can we increase our domain authority? It can be done by receiving strong backlinks and creating quality content. However, it is not that simple. So stick to the article to know the right and easiest way.
Simple Steps To Boost Your Domain Authority
The domain authority of a website determines its likelihood on Google. The quality and quantity of backlinks calculate that a website receives. It is the matrix set by Google to check and evaluate the worth of a respective website.
Increasing the Domain authority will also increase the website’s visibility on Google’s first page. Therefore, by following these three basic steps you can ensure a visible increase in the domain authority of your website.
Tumblr media
Start with the Basics
Firstly check the on-screen SEO or Technical SEO of your webpage. This ensures that your website loads quickly and securely. For this, you can make a few checks like
Ensure the website is mobile-friendly and loads quickly. This ensures a better user experience, and the website is more likely to receive more backlinks.
Apart from the external linking, focus on the internal links in your webpage. Ensure that the anchor text matches the content. This improves Google crawl, and the content is more visible to Google.
No one visits a slow website. Users will leave the website without viewing it if it is not opening quickly. Hence, you need to focus on your website speed to ensure a better user experience.
Include High-Quality Backlinks
The Domain authority of a webpage is evaluated by the quality and quantity of its backlinks. So it's impossible to increase your domain authority without focusing on backlinking. For this, there are some simple rules you need to remember.
Improve Your content
Authoritative websites will only backlink the content that is worth citing. Therefore, seek out different keywords and do in-depth research on the topic. Read various articles and then create your content.
Try to make it helpful and comprehensive. Include all the data which you feel is missing in other blogs. But try to remain stick to the topic and make it interesting. Include only the required and informative content.
This way your blog will be seen as a complete source to backlink for a topic and you will receive more backlinks and resultantly your Domain authority will be increased.
Advertise Yourself
Creating quality content alone is not enough. You have to reach different sources to backlink your content. For this, you can send emails to other bloggers or promote yourself on social media. This will increase the opportunity of getting quality backlinks.
Write guest blogs
Writing guest blogs is another way of increasing your Domain authority. First, you write for different reputable sites. And to return your favor they might backlink your content in their blogs. Moreover, the folks reading the content will also visit your website to see more such content.
Avoid Low-quality Backlinks
The low-quality backlinks can affect your website’s domain authority. They are usually from scammy and unauthoritative websites. Having a low-quality backlink can reduce your website’s worth on Google. Therefore, you need to get rid of low-quality backlinks as soon as possible.
A low-quality backlink is just like ‘being part of a bad neighborhood’. It can also influence your Google rank. So you can use Domain Authority Checker to check the backlinks on your website. Then, you can easily remove them.
Conclusion
To conclude, we know higher Domain authority means a higher ranking on Search Engine Research pages and more organic traffic. You can follow the above tips to boost your Domain authority. Moreover, you can use a Domain Authority checker to check your domain authority and see your progress at intervals. This will help you evaluate your weak points and understand which content attracts the most traffic. Hence, by working on your Domain Authority and Page Authority you can definitely secure a higher rank on SERPs.

The inconceivable thing is that this conspiracy exists within the Church, that there are bishops and even cardinals, and many priests and religious, who play the role of Judas. That such a “fifth column” exists is not merely my unauthoritative private opinion; on the contrary, a number of cardinals, bishops, and prelates have declared in private conversations that no one who is not blind can overlook this incredibly tightly organized “fifth column” within the Church. Of course the number of religious who belong to this “fifth column” may be comparatively small, but they have a clear aim, coupled with the kind of intelligence that one finds in all Soviet and Chinese embassies, which should be more precisely characterized as slyness and cunning, to distinguish it from true intelligence.
It must be emphasized from the outset, however, that the destruction of the Church is being sought from two completely different motives. In one case it is the conspiracy which has existed at all times to undermine the Faith and destroy the Church, with the sole difference that those involved do not want to undermine the Church from without, but rather from within. This is precisely the system of the “fifth column.” People who pretend to be Catholics, who assume offices in the Church, are seeking from within, under the banner of reform and progress, to destroy the Church.
Completely different from these people are those who do not want to destroy the Church as such, i.e., who do not seek the disappearance of the Church, but who rather want to transform the Church into something which completely contradicts her meaning and essence. This includes all those who wish to make the Church of Jesus Christ into a purely humanitarian society, to rob her of her supernatural character, to secularize and desacralize her. They share that camouflage of the enemies of the Church which comes from using the shibboleths of “reform,” “progress,” and “adaptation to modern man.” But they do not want to eliminate the Church. The catchwords “reform” and “progress” are not mere tricks which they use; they really believe them.
The result of the activity of this group is the same as that of the first group; only their motives are different. This latter group would vehemently protest if one were to accuse them of intending the destruction of the Church. But they have lost the true Christian Faith to such an extent that they do not clearly understand that the secularized, humanitarian organization which they want to make out of the holy Church would have nothing left in common with the Church of Jesus Christ. They do not see that if they were to reach their goal, it would amount to the destruction of the Church.
Henri de Lubac, S.J., pointed this out with forceful and penetrating words:
“One becomes conscious that the Church is confronted with a grave crisis. In the name of a “new” Church, a “post-conciliar” Church, some people are attempting to found another Church than that of Jesus Christ: an anthropocentric society, which is threatened by an ‘immanentist apostasy,’ and which can be drawn into a movement of general surrender under the cloak of rejuvenation, ecumenism, or adaptation.”
- Dietrich von Hildebrand, The Devastated Vineyard, Introduction, p. xii-xiii.

The Counsellor: Leona Kingscholar
Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/27042859/chapters/66133471
Characters: Leona Kingscholar, Jakurai Jinguji
Leona was lying on the sofa that was in the office of the man who had a strange air around him. His green eyes were half lidded and his tail switched lazily. Something about that man was… off. Jinguji Jakurai was a man who came out of nowhere. A man who seemed to have no background, nothing that one was able to track back to him. Everything about him seemed harmless, the way he held himself was something he was not used to. In a way, it reminded him a bit of his brother.
The lion let out a silent sound of annoyance, but he calmed down quite quickly.
He smelled strange.
Disinfectants, lavender and mint. Despite how everything seemed to scream at him that the man was safe, not a threat, his gut feeling told him something else.
Danger, caution, don’t mess with him. Instincts were something he usually trusted in, but the man was magicless. If he really wanted to, it would be easy for him to just squash him with a small move, an unassuming spell or his unique magic.
Still, maybe it would be better if he trusted his instincts for now and stayed careful.
If he had a choice, he wouldn’t have come here in the first place. This whole idea of going to someone to talk about his problems was not something he wanted to do at all. Too bad that the headmaster forced him to after the Overblot accident. If he hadn’t been threatened with being forced to work even more while being supervised, he would have just skipped without care. Under these circumstances though, it was easier if he simply gave in and got over with it as fast as he could.
“You are Kingscholar-Kun, right?”
The man, whose hair reminded him of the lavenders of the botany, looked up from some documents and smiled. It was harmless, and he thought about any kind of teacher, or older person in general, who treated him like this. Unafraid, unauthoritative.
Equal. Being treated as someone equal, not someone higher or lesser.
Leona was caught off guard, but he quickly changed back to his uncaring attitude. It was nothing to be impressed with. His ear did not just twitch because of how his curiosity has been stirred.
“I am. So, what do I have to do now, herbivore? Talk about my family? About an oh so tragic past?”
He raised an eyebrow before he sat up, leaning forward to get closer to the taller man.
Intimidation almost always worked to get what he wanted. The student did not intend on telling him anything about his past, for it was nobody's business.
“You can tell me about it if you wish to, but I won’t force you. No, what I wanted to ask was what your strengths are. It doesn’t matter if they are related to school or not. Anything is fine.”
Leona waited for the other to continue, but when he didn’t say anything for the following seconds, he sighed and decided to play along. It was the first time that anyone was interested in something like this. Most people would have asked him about what he liked and disliked, or they would have tried to get more information about his brother to get in the good graces of either of them.
Even though Leona wasn’t a king, will never be one because of how he had been born later and because of the existence of Cheka, a lot of people wanted to curry his favour because of the fact that he was a prince.
“Ancient curses are easy enough… and chess is something I am good at I guess.” In the end, the third year student decided to play along with him. If all questions were like that, he didn’t mind spending some time here. It wasn’t too annoying, and the counsellor was one of the people who didn’t seem to annoy him in any way so far.
Like that, Jakurai asked him more and more trivial questions. His opinion on some fellow students. What he dislikes about things in school. What he did in his spare time.
Of course, he wasn’t the only one answering questions.
“If I have to answer you, you have to tell me about yourself as well.”
He was pretty sure that he wouldn’t say anything involving his past and the place he came from when he seemed to try his best to cover it up. Leona paid some people to get information about the older man, but they came up with nothing. Not a single thing. Even those who had the ability to dig deeper were not successful.
Digging into these matters himself would only take too much effort, and he didn’t see it as necessary to work hard because of a man who didn’t seem as if intended to hurt anyone, even though he clearly had the ability to harm.
This was something he realized when he watched the man. His moves were smooth, his fingers tense and the way he behaved harmless seemed almost deliberate. Most people wouldn’t have noticed anything, but the lion knew where to look at to notice the little signs.
Jakurai seemed gentle, fatherly, but there was a glint in his eyes that told him that he was not just a father figure. In a way… he reminded him of an assassin. His ear twitched again, and his tail swished a bit faster.
An assassin? Would someone really be that bold and try to kill him on school grounds? No, even the assassins in the past knew to keep away from this place, for there were eyes and ears everywhere.
But why else was a person like him here? Leonas were narrowed and he interrupted him from whatever he just wanted to say.
“What is an assassin like you doing at our school?”
He could see the surprise on the other's face. So his gut feeling was right. The man who seemed to be favoured by a lot of students was dangerous… could be dangerous. If he really wanted to, and if he was as good as his instincts told him he was, he would have done his job quickly and cleanly, only to leave afterwards without being traced.
Also, even though the headmaster was useless and annoying most of the time, he wouldn’t let anyone in who would be a danger to the students, so he wouldn’t harm him… now.
Jakurai was silent for a while, probably thinking about what he should tell him, before he finally gave him an answer.
“I am here because of an unknown incident. If I had a way to get back home, I would have done so already, but I don’t. So for now, I am working here as a counsellor and nurse until I can return to the place I am from. Hopefully that was enough to satisfy your curiosity, Leona-Kun?”
The lion stared at him, looking for any sign that he was lying. Maybe a nervous tick, a second in which his eyes are wandering somewhere else, the scent of fear or the tiniest shift in his voice would have been enough to tip him, but there was none of that.
He was completely being honest with him.
With that, Leona got up from the couch, stretching himself before he turned away.
“Next week, same time, carnivore.”
And with that, he left the room.
What he was not able to see was the smile that Jakurai had on his lips.

Liberal Education and the allegory of the cave.
While thinking about our discussion about liberal education and the allegory of the cave, I came across something that contradicts the notion that education is liberating.  Why do highly educated people seem to have more trust in institutions?  Institutions are the ones telling us what to think, the puppeteers casting the shadows that society perpetuate and treat as reality.  So, with a liberal education, wouldn’t one think more freely and therefore believe institutions less?  Are schools actually indoctrination camps that force people to believe in institutions and therefore keep them in the cave in their current state?  I agree with Professor Cohen that the education system does do a bad job when it comes to “liberal” education.  Within the education system, there is little tolerance for unauthoritative articles that do not have an institution backing them up.  The flip side is; is too much free thought a bad thing?  Would a truly liberal education promote conspiracy theories and ultimately be harmful?  Should we want a liberal education?  I have yet to decide.

it is a necessary evil, the glamour of it all. as the first female president of the united states, she is treading uncharted waters. events suddenly have to have a balance to them where they never have before. you have to be kind, charming, but not so intensely that you become unauthoritative ( god knows it doesn't help that america knew her as the stepford wife for eight years ). your outfit must be fashion - forward, dazzling, but not shocking. there must be a perfect balance in every department or you risk facing losing the intended purpose of the event to useless, fluffy headlines. should she so much as shake his hand for a moment too long, his face will be all over the evening news. and so she offers her greeting, but she keeps her distance. intentionally.
Tumblr media
it feels unbearable to stand there so far apart, almost as though by forcing it they're making it look even more unnatural than it should. the edges of painted lips curve into a gentle smile that mirrors his own, amusement faint in her eyes. " we both know it wasn't an easy road for either one of us. this night should just as much serve as a celebration of your talent. " hands clasped in front of her, crystalline gaze wanders over his shoulder expectantly. " i . . . hope you brought a date to share in your big night? " she cordiality is there, but the question could not be less sincere.
IN ANOTHER LIFE, HE WOULD'VE MARVELED THIS. the glitz, the glam, the flashing lights, all the attention. a room full of people there to ( halfheartedly ) congratulate him on his success in making their president look outstanding. ( not that mellie needed any of his help with that. ) however, with each pat on the back, each strapping handshake, and each "attaboy" slung in his direction, henry could feel the suffocation tighten around his neck. when he receives a moment of respite, the lights dim, and suddenly whispers chime like cicadas. slowly, henry pivots on the heels of his feet and watches as the actual guest of honor graces them with her presence. the rapid beats of his heart become deafening in his ears. for a moment, the imaginary snake resting on his shoulder constricts his ability to breathe. ( IN ACCOMPANIMENT ARE THE NOT-SO-SUBTLE FLIPS OCCURRING IN THE PIT OF HIS BELLY. ) initially, he swore not to show. insisted that tonight was about mellie, not him. even going as far as tossing his official white house invitation in the trash. yet, the magnitude of the pull toward her was too much for henry to turn a blind eye to. the moment their eyes lock, henry relaxes his shoulders, releasing an exasperated sigh. [ how did she always manage to look so beautiful ? ] a smile reaches chestnut eyes, lines crinkling around the edges, and a subtle nod is pushed toward the president.
Tumblr media
HIS GAZE ON HER NEVER WAVERS. with each step she takes, the anticipation becomes agonizingly painful. was he ready for this ? what would he say to her ? would she even want to see him ? as questions swirl on an endless swivel, henry finds comfort in his flute's last swallow of champagne. suddenly, her scent catches the air, and teeth start to gnaw on the inside of his jaw. a thick swallow and henry's lips part, ❛❛ madame president. ❜❜ surprisingly, his voice is unwavering. when she offers him a smile, henry can't help but reciprocate. his smile slips along with a chuckle as their eyes meet. ❛❛ if we're going to be honest, i couldn't have done this without my co-author. ❜❜ he suppresses the urge to wink. ❛❛ but, the last time I checked, this party was to celebrate your success, madame president, not mine. ❜❜ digits casually tug at the bowtie around his neck as his lips rest in a thin line. ❛❛ i'm happy for you, mel— ❜❜ quickly, henry stops speaking, recollects himself, and begins again. ❛❛ i'm happy for you, madame president. YOU DESERVE ALL THE SUCCESS AND MORE. ❜❜

He’s supposed to be allowed to sleep in today.
With Rulfio guarding the Empress and Rinaldo taking care of the Whalers’ morning briefing, Thomas is supposed to be allowed a few extra hours of rest, a few extra hours of lying in bed with Daud’s head resting on his shoulder and his arm draped across his chest. He is supposed to be allowed peace.
But exactly half an hour after the time they normally get up, Thomas and Daud are awoken by Rinaldo transversing into the room.
“Master Daud,” he begins hurriedly, none of the Whalers ever having stopped addressing him as ‘Master’, “we’ve a problem. Kieron’s reported some new group of extremists calling themselves ‘The Regenters’ and it seems they’re hell-bent on getting Empress Emily deposed and I can’t find Thomas anywhere and we need –”
“I’ll be there in five,” Thomas says as he sits up, disentangling himself from Daud’s hold so he can get out of bed. “Send some men ahead to keep eyes on the situation, and have Kieron ready to report.”
Rinaldo just stares at him, mouth agape.
“Now, Rinaldo!” Thomas barks, and despite the unauthoritative figure he must cut, bare-chested and shoulder-length hair in disarray, his tone has Rinaldo snapping into a salute and vanishing with the Void.
“Outsider’s eyes,” he mutters, dragging a hand across his face. This is just what he needs this early in the morning.
Daud opens one bleary eye to look at him, his head still buried between the pillows. “Looks like you’ll have a busy morning.”
“You’re useless,” Thomas says fondly, bending down to peck Daud’s lips before hurrying into the bathroom to clean himself up and don his uniform.
It’s going to be a really long day.

History, in general, only informs us what bad government is.
To preserve our independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude. . .I place economy among the first and most important of republican virtues, and public debt as the greatest of the dangers to be feared.
Peace, commerce and honest friendship with all nations; entangling alliances with none.
The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground.
Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the tempestuous sea of Liberty.
To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors, is sinful and tyrannical.
In matters of Power, let no more be heard of confidence in men, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution.
The care of every man's soul belongs to himself. But what if he neglect the care of it? Well what if he neglect the care of his health or his estate, which would more nearly relate to the state. Will the magistrate make a law that he not be poor or sick? Laws provide against injury from others; but not from ourselves. God himself will not save men against their wills.
If we were directed from Washington when to sow and when to reap, we would soon want for bread.
When all government, in little as in great things, shall be drawn to Washington as the Center of all power, it will render powerless the checks provided of one government on another and will become as venal and oppressive as the government from which we separated.
If we can but prevent the government from wasting the labours of the people, under the pretence of taking care of them, they must become happy.
On every question of construction, let us carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or invented against it, conform to the probable one in which it was passed.
The course of history shows that as a government grows, liberty decreases.
I believe the states can best govern our home concerns and the federal government our foreign ones.
The policy of the American government is to leave their citizens free, neither restraining nor aiding them in their pursuits.
A strong body makes a strong mind. As to the species of exercise I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Let your gun, therefore, be the constant companion of your walks.
The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but the newspapers.
I am not a friend to a very energetic government. It is always oppressive.
Single acts of tyranny may be ascribed to the accidental opinion of a day. But a series of oppressions, begun at a distinguished period, and pursued unalterably through every change of ministers, too plainly proves a deliberate systematic plan of reducing us to slavery.
The principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but a swindling futurity on a large scale.
Money, not morality, is the principle of commercial nations.
The future inhabitants of [both] the Atlantic and Mississippi states will be our sons. We think we see their happiness in their union, and we wish it. Events may prove otherwise; and if they see their interest in separating why should we take sides? God bless them both, and keep them in union if it be for their good, but separate them if it be better.
Dependence leads to subservience.
When angry, count ten before you speak; if very angry, a hundred.
If a law is unjust, a man is not only right to disobey it, he is obligated to do so.
If people let government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny.
An elective despotism was not the government we fought for.
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add "within the law," because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.
Tyranny is defined as that which is legal for the government but illegal for the citizenry.
Whensoever the General Government assumes undelegated powers, its acts are unauthoritative, void, and of no force.
Congress has not unlimited powers to provide for the general welfare, but only those specifically enumerated.
When a man assumes a public trust, he should consider himself public property.
The issue today is the same as it has been throughout all history, whether man shall be allowed to govern himself or be ruled by a small elite.
Nothing gives one person so much advantage over another as to remain always cool and unruffled under all circumstances.
I never consider a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend.
The ground of liberty is to be gained by inches, and we must be contented to secure what we can get from time to time and eternally press forward for what is yet to get. It takes time to persuade men to do even what is for their own good.
The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong but better so than not to be exercised at all. I like a little rebellion now and then. It is like a storm in the atmosphere.
It is error alone which needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself.
The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.
[Political] offices are as acceptable here as elsewhere, and whenever a man cast a longing eye on them, a rottenness begins in his conduct.
I have sworn upon the altar of god, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.
A wise and frugal government which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government.
Sometimes it is said that man cannot be trusted with the government of himself. Can he, then, be trusted with the government of others?
I have ever deemed it fundamental for the United States never to take active part in the quarrels of Europe. Their political interests are entirely distinct from ours. Their mutual jealousies, their balance of power, their complicated alliances, their forms and principles of government, are all foreign to us. They are nations of eternal war.
Experience [has] shown that, even under the best forms [of government], those entrusted with power have, in time and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms, disarm only those who are neither inclined, nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants. They serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.
Our legislators are not sufficiently apprized of the rightful limits of their power; that their true office is to declare and enforce only our natural rights and duties, and to take none of them from us.
I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.
My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.
If there be any among us who wish to dissolve the Union or to change its republican form, let them stand undisturbed, as monuments of the safety with which error of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it.

Note
John wick - was it really that bad?
Well, let’s say it’s a fantasy so it doesn’t have to be all the way realistic. Let’s say it exists in a universe where an organization is capable of tracing a person in a huge city through physical eye-surveillance of people that are financially interested in NOT telling on John’s location (14 million to me alone).
Let’s say said organization is formed from idiots with no military training and common sense (Sir, yes, sir, we need to attack him in line, so he’d kill us all in well-choreographed dance, moving toward the place where our team members’ve just been shot in the head repeatedly).
Let’s say the organization was able to survive the world set by itself, appointing such unauthoritative, unbelievable, weak characters to key positions around the table (yes I’m looking at you Ajudicator and Elder. ELDER who is 46 year old!!!!)
Let’s say we except it all and just ignore the holes in the logic of the script. But what about the laws of nature? Physics, biology, history? Should be ignore it too?
Like a person that got SHOT and STABBED acts throughout the movie like he’s just a bit tired. ZERO body acting.
Like a suit that ignores inertia and Newton’s laws. Accompanied by bullets that navigate their ways to just hit the jacket.
Like a 50 kilo woman capable of throwing off a 100 kilo man by hitting him in the face, with her fist, of her thin and delicate arm.
Like a stamina of a person who does not rest or sleep or eat or drink or shit or wash himself throughout the movie.
Or swordfights that do not finish in 3 seconds and become a ballet with sharp things.
Or the cultural representation. I’m sure lots of people that live in today’s Casablanca recognized the site. Turban, camels and carpets it’s all one needs.
And my favorite! The Belorussian gypsies!!! What the fuck is a Belarussian gypsy??!! What language do they speak? Romani? Belorussian? Noooo..... Why?? They would speak Russian, drink vodka, fight bears sorry no - ballet and judo with tats. On ballerinas. Like they took convicted criminals and ballerinas and merge them.
Fuuuuck!!!
But I digress…
Yeah. John Wick 3 is shit.
