Favorite Ships
I am not really very much interested in classical fandom 'shipping', I have to say. I occasionally do enjoy fictional relationships in the media I consume, but I would say that 'shipping' is too big a word.
My profile picture also informs me to type out "HMS Preston" for some reason. ;-)
Last Song
Come Here, Fellow Servant, from the afterpiece play High Life Below the Stairs (1759) by James Townley. As I understand, while the words survive, the original melody did not; this is a modern arrangement of what the song may have sounded like.
The play satirises the social hierarchies of the time, with the servants belowstairs trying to mimic the dissipated manner of living of their sybaritic, back-stabbing employers. The song is sung at the servants' secret house party, to which they invite a few aristocratic types interested in the delightful novelty of having to do with commoners. The song, composed by party guest Sir Harry, is sung by Kitty, an upwardly mobile maidservant who thinks highly of herself because she received an education and speaks French.
While perhaps some of the portrayals of characters or critique of contemporary issues in the play do not withstand the test of time (Kitty's belief in her education for instance would certainly carry a positive connotation nowadays), its core message, namely that thoughtlessly emulating someone just because they're considered to be rich and famous holds up poignantly well.
Last Film
Der Bestatter - Der Film. A Swiss comedy based on a 7-season series of the same name. Luc, an ex-policeman-turned-funeral-director-turned-Costa-Rican-beach-bar-owner and his friends, the two police officers Anna Maria and Dörig, ex-apprentice and now successful goth funeral director Fabio, his quasi surrogate mother Erika and Semmelweiß, the somewhat strange coroner have to band together one last time as a holiday stay at a remote hotel to celebrate Erika's birthday is unexpectededly interrupted when the hotel director dies under highly suspicious circumstances.
I can only warmly recommend both the series and the film; not only are the murder cases Luc and his friends solve gripping and often overarching an entire season, giving the storylines ample time to develop, Der Bestatter also deals very touchingly with topics such as loss, grief, death, terminal illness and facing past mistakes while never taking itself too seriously.
Currently Reading
The Spite of Fortune by Kishandra Fulford, a biography about Louisa Carolina Colleton Graves, an 18th/19th century noblewoman with a rather eventful life story. I am reading it not so much for her as for the information on her husband's family, the Graves'. While the author evidently poured a lot of effort into the book, some of her judginess against the physical appearance of some of the people featured in her book, a total lack of foot- or endnotes and the occasional spelling and grammar mistakes sadly don't sit quite right with me. With the right editor, she could have told Louisa Carolina Colleton Graves' fascinating, and also somewhat tragic, story a lot more effectively.
Currently Craving
Spring, a new pleated skirt, and a walk. Maybe some chocolate, too.
@clove-pinks, @professorlehnsherr-almashy and @my-deer-friend, would you like to join in? If anybody else wants to share their list, consider yourself tagged by me.

“You’re okay,” you reassured. “We’ll be okay, I promise.”
Leaning over the edge of the boat, your Orc Boyfriend said in a gruff voice, “Orcs were not made for water travel.”
All you could do was rub his back. “We haven’t even set off yet…” you mumbled just low enough that your partner couldn’t hear.
The two of you had decided to go and explore the wider world. It was a tough and scary decision for you both to make. You both had never ventured beyond your homeland, and your Orc had never faced the prospect of being separated from his caravan.
When he had first announced his intent to travel with you, the whole Caravan had erupted with disapproval. He had silenced them all with barks of reassurance... Although you weren’t exactly sure how he did it, given the yelling and shouting.
Eventually, the Caravan warmed up to the idea. They even offered to escort you both to the docs, but you both declined.
A whole encampment of Orcs suddenly appearing at the docs? People would assume they were trying to plunder a ship and then everything would go to Hell.
If it were only you and your Orc, people would stare yes, but there wouldn’t be as nearly as much panic. And you would let them stare.
What business was it of other people what you and your Orc did together? You were not being forced to go along with him.
The boat eventually unanchored... And you both were off.
Your Orc Boyfriend effortlessly bounced back from his sickness, insisting it was because of his diet, but you saw through his deception. The two of you watched as the land got further and further away from the boat.
As the land turned into a mere strip of green from the horizon, your Orc wrapped his arms around your waist from behind. He placed his head on top of your own.
A heavy sigh escaped him, causing you to look up. Placing your hands on top of his muscular forearms. “And there it goes,” he said, a note of finality rang through his tone.
You give his arm a squeeze. “And there it goes.” You echoed.
The both of you were due to begin a whole new adventure in the wider world... Who knew what excitement was waiting for you out there?

abused women unable to leave their male partners do exist and shouldn’t be pressured to put themselves in danger. agree. but I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that feminism needs to go beyond encouraging helplessness in instances where women are NOT in situations where they will die without men, perpetuating the myth that women can’t organise a feminist revolution, and admit that many countries have more opportunities for women to live without men in 2024 than we had in 1960. we need to get beyond the idea that women shouldn’t be held responsible for their own contributions to other forms of oppression because they’re supposedly permanent victims to men and merely act by the extension of men, unless they’re lesbian and therefore are somehow The Exception. we need to teach women that, even if you’re attracted to men, you captain your own ship and if the passenger isn’t good enough then they shouldn’t board (which, under patriarchy, which man is good enough?). feminism eats itself in the way it enables and even encourages female helplessness by resigning women, particularly those attracted to men, to a life without agency because patriarchy is Oh So Bad. yeah patriarchy does fucking suck. but if we continue down the path of absolute sympathising with learned helplessness—reliance on men—then we can actually never get out of the fucking cage. women do have to orchestrate their own escape - men will not do it for you. the idea that women just can’t help partaking in patriarchal rituals, they just can’t help being the support staff to the life men want for themselves, they just can’t help bringing other women down—and every bit of racism or homophobia they exhibit is just them behaving as a vessel for Male Beliefs rather than ones that are empower said woman, too!—then all we are left with is a population of weakness destined to bow to male authority. we need to get beyond the idea that women have absolutely no agency—that feminism exists to mop up male violence in DV shelters rather than unionising women, ideally BEFORE abuse, and warring with men. even if we die trying. feminism currently needs a bit of tough love. it’s moved past consciousness raising and now needs some fucking determined action. those raised consciousnesses still choose men because unanchoring is scary and every brand of feminism pretends like women can’t do it because we are too victimised to act! end doomerism!

Honestly the funniest thing about the meta for Sea of Thieves is that almost no ship uses a fucking anchor to stop. They just all raise their sails up and let their momentum come to a natural stop. Its fucking insane and it's because the goddamn game doesn't accurately simulate the potential drift of an unanchored ship. Plus, raising the anchor takes valuable time that could be used in PVP to escape from a potentially slower ship.

idk if you like this ship, but Nocorro headcanons?
Hi sorry for the delay, I went on a Nocorro tail spin for this
Neteyam hides his feelings for Spider when they're young because he is worried about his moms feelings but has always been gentle with him and secretly enjoyed his company
They got along but just weren't overly close
Spider always was jealous of Neteyam for being everything he couldn't be - Na'vi, loved, strong, respected, etc. But always admired him just as much
Their relationship would start secret - on the downlow for the sake of their own anxieties - and would start due to their common denominator - Lo'ak
As his big brother and his best friend respectively, they always seemed to be the ones at the end of his messes. For Neteyam, it was cleaning them up or talking him out of it and for Spider, it was tagging along before inevitably just trying to keep them both alive
It's my thought that Lo'ak is the one that considers Spider's humanity the least and sees him the most as just Spider, even moreso than Kiri, and so he accidentally gets him hurt a fair amount - hence, Neteyam has to patch him up
This time is where they bond a lot - venting, mocking one another, but also eventually devolving into the fear, insecurity, etc they each feel
They would be the couple that goes through all of the 'new' stuff (i.e the awkward and honeymoon phases) by themselves while no one knows yet about their relationship so that by the time they get together publicly, everyone thinks of them as the old married couple of sorts
They equal one another out in a lot of ways and meet one another's insecurities - each is everything the other wants with the added consequences they didn't see coming
While it takes vulnerability that neither is prepared for, they come to be the same space for one another they each need and become a big part in one another's healing
They're both emotional protectors to the other as no one ever filled the roles for them and for once, they both get to be someone's priority
Its the story of the oldest son and forgotten child
They're two sides of the same beat up coin
Neteyam is protective and takes after his mom in being a guardian but is more reserved and takes social cues into account - he is aware of his mates vulnerability and protects in a lot like how his parents do - meanwhile, Spider is just fucking feral
It takes a long time to teach Spider that he can't just go in like he has nothing to lose - there's a lot of self-worth arguments
However, this comes to head with neither being sure where they stand to announce the relationship. I imagine it wouldn't come out until it had to
in canon, this is the RDA capturing Spider
The RDA taking Spider is what ends with their relationship becoming public
Neteyam has to see his parents as mortal and imperfect while Spider is faced with the doubts on his self-worth and position in the family
Neither knows how to proceed but they fight like hell with something more to fight for than the original canon offers
Neteyam loses it when Spider is taken, he goes feral, fighting with all of Neytiri's spirit, and relies heavily on his parents and the childish belief that they can somehow fix it
I don't think he would realize there's no fixing it until they're with the Metkayina and Ao'nung is courting him
He would lose it, acting more and more like Lo'ak while being lost in his own internal whirlpool of self-doubts and questioning
If war didn't make him grow up then this does
He doesn't think he'll get Spider back until he sees him on the deck but at this point, he's just blindly following Jake - he's unanchored and confused and it is still Lo'ak who ultimately is the reason Spider comes home
As for his fate, I think Spider would have been closer to him. Neteyam would have grabbed him on instinct and been ducking lower to guard the more vulnerable of the two and missed the shot
Them getting home is like recovering from a breakup though
Spider spent the months more convinced than ever that he is unwanted and left astray
But he is also more aware of the emotional manipulation and more at peace with his dynamic with the Sullys so Quaritch doesn't have as much success with him
Despite his doubts festering, it's a sort of resignation that the things they felt for him isn't enough - not that they don't exist
Neteyam would have given him hope that he is a part of the family and made him feel something worth cherishing
Then the RDA comes and it's the resignation that everything is over and he's not going home
He's a lot more grim here
But the upside is that Nocorro is a lot of healing
They're with the Metkayina and helping one another remember their value - Spider in the family and Neteyam as his own person
They both need to be reminded that they're worthy of loving and that's what the months following ATWOW is filled with
Consequently, it's also how the duo become legitimate threats to the RDA
The protective rage they both feel with what was taken from them means they're ruthless - they become a lot more empowered to protect their homes and focus on building some place safe for their family
Ultimately they are a very love and family driven couple with the other slowly becoming their other half, they operate like an extension of themselves with a level of understanding no one else would have
Post-war would take a long time for them to settle but I think they both have similar desires again in just having a loving, safe place for their family to grow and to heal together
Honestly this couple is just very soft and very old married couple, like think the gays from The Last of Us that die together bro

Ok mutuals, here is what's probably going to be my introduction for my AU about James Francis Edward (I haven't got a title for it yet). I ended up just writing this for my Creative Writing class and I think it's okayish hopefully:
"By the grace of Almighty God, the Queen has delivered of a son."
He had been told this was his introduction to the world. His introduction to his birthright and his introduction to the people that would get rid of him and his family.
James Francis Edward knew by heart what happened next, which made his heart break. Soon after his birth, the signal was raised for the Prince of Orange to invade England and depose them. And as soon as that happened, the the people of England, the very people who were meant to rejoice for the newborn Prince had immediately said he was not real. Smuggled in. Through a warming pan of all things.
Maria Beatrice, his mother had been ordered to flee with him by the King. They were banished not long after to Italy, Maria's home country, settling in at the Monastery of Sant'Antonio in Polesine. They were here because they were not allowed to be seen as royal and anyways Maria had planned to become a nun before she was betrothed to the King of England.
The nuns at the Monastery of Sant'Antonio had immediately taken them in as their own, watching the little boy grow up with eagerness. Little Jamie had been raised with a strong faith in God, a well needed relationship. He was now kneeling at the crucifix, praying quietly, murmuring under his breath: "Holy Father, help me, help us all. Help me get my father's throne back, please. I hate what I have caused. Amen." Unable to hear what he was saying, in the background, Maria and two other nuns slipped away into another room. "Your child is so devout, Sister Maria. He prays all of the time."
"I know" came the reply. "Poor little thing. I will wait on him."
She watched her little boy pray for the time being, noting the resemblance between him and his late father - a victim of the axe. Jamie had his stately figure and was rapidly approaching his namesake in height with a big curly wig that definitely showed the resemblance when worn.
Finally, Jamie finished praying, startling as soon as he turned around to notice his mother sitting there, silently gazing at him but immediately recovered and lowered his head into a bow. "Mother" The name came out awkward and unsure of himself and he didn't like that at all. "Mother I haven't kept you waiting have I?" He was now beginning to panic.
How long had she been sitting there?
"Jamie, dear Jamie, don't be silly, of course you haven't kept me. You must always say your prayers daily." The boy immediately walked over to his mother who instantly took his hand into hers - but not after hugging him close to her chest and stroking his hair.
"You are becoming such a handsome young man, my darling" she whispered into his ear. There was a hint of melancholy in her voice and he knew what it was about.
His mother loved him very much, the poor thing. After numerous miscarriages or children not surviving infancy, she had no doubt been overjoyed to be delivered a son. Her husband, James II of England had no doubt been grateful for his heir to come at last. Yet the child didn't feel the same way at all.
I mean, what do you expect, when your very birth caused your family to lose everything?
@unanchored-ship, @defensivelee and @acrossthewavesoftime ask and you shall receive at long last.

INTERVIEW WITH A WRITEBLR — @daisywords
Who You Are:
Daisy || She/her
I'm a fantasy enjoyer about to graduate from university with a degree in editing. In addition to writing, I like to draw/paint and play the piano. Also interested in linguistics and bookbinding
What You Write:
What genres do you write in? What age ranges do you write for?
Fantasy and Sci-Fi. Young and New Adult, Adult.
What genre would you write in for the rest of your life, if you could? What about that genre appeals to you?
I love specfic in general, fantasy in particular (but the line between fantasy and scifi is blurrier than one might think). I particularly like the potential of alternate worlds to set up situations and character dynamics that simply couldn't exist in a historical or contemporary novel
What genre/s will you not write unless you HAVE to? What about that genre turns you off?
I don't read or write smut/erotica but other than that everything else is potentially on the table. I couldn't see myself doing straight historical fiction, either, honestly, just because I probably wouldn't be able to resist adding some specfic elements and/or unanchoring it from time (Fantasy is freedom to me, whereas historical accuracy is something extra to adhere to.)
Who is your target audience? Do you think anyone outside of that would get anything out of your works?
You mean other than myself?? Ok but actually it's pretty broadly just people who like fantasy. I have one wip that's technically YA just based on the age of the characters, but it could definitely be enjoyed by adults. My other wip is adult/NA but could also definitely be enjoyed by teenagers.
What kind of themes do you tend to focus on? What kinds of tropes? What about them appeals to you?
hmmm….something about the juxtaposition of violence and tenderness? Guilt/responsibility and free will/predestination a la the Chosen One trope. Memory loss trope (so juicy)
What themes or tropes can you not stand? What about them turn you off?
I personally am not a fan of immortal love interests. sorry everyone.
What are you currently working on? How long have you been working on it?
My current main wip is called Deep and Dark, Beautiful and Bright. I started it in November 2020. I also have a back burner project called Fear Me, which has been ship-of-Theseus-ing since I was like 10 lol. And I'm working on two short stories that are being more trouble than they're worth
How long have you been writing? What do you think first drew you to it?
I've been making up stories since I knew what stories were. Mostly started out playing elaborate pretend games with my sister. In second grade my best friend suggested we "write a book" together since our teacher would give out blank spiral-bound paper packets. (I think she was mostly interested in my illustration abilities tbh) Anyway we created a series centered around a character named Natalie (who was basically a ripoff of Ramona/Junie B. Jones.) But anyway I think around then is when I actually became interested in writing books as an outlet for making up stories. I didn't actually do a ton of writing as a kid, but I always collected story ideas and had a ton of ocs that I would draw in my secret sketchbook.
Where do you get your inspiration from? Is that how you got your inspiration for your current project? If not, where did the inspiration come from?
Honestly I get inspiration from everywhere. My brain is a very productive idea factory (but not a productive draft finisher, sadly). Other media (for example taking one specific concept or plot point form a move and running in the opposite direction with it), dreams, songs, historical events, offhand comments from friends, etc. Sometimes justt out of nowhere I swear.
Have you published anything? Do you want to?
Not yet and yes eventually
What part of the publishing process most appeals to you? What part least appeals to you?
I want my projects to have a final form and I want other people to read them. I don't want anyone I know irl (or anyone else for that matter) to psychoanalyze me about them. I'm not looking forward to anything to do with marketing, writing to market, tight deadlines, adhering to standardized formats/lengths, etc. but so it goes…
What part of the writing process most appeals to you? What part is least appealing?
I love coming up with ideas and characters and scenes. I love rambling in my notes doc. I love drafting in the rare moments when I actually do it. I really struggle with getting all the pieces of my plot to fit together. I like editing (I'm literally an editor). I cannot do project management to save my life.
Do you have a writing process? Do you have an ideal setup? Do you write in pure chaos? Talk about your process a bit.
Right now what's working fro me is to have three distinct documents. One goes strictly in order. Another is to put all of the scenes I want to write that don't fit into that order yet. The third one is for me to yell about it all (notes). When I'm lucky, scenes form the chaos doc (scene bank) eventually find their way into the order doc.
Your Thoughts on Writeblr:
How long have you been a writeblr? What inspired you to join the community?
I joined tumblr predominantly for the writeblr community in 2018 (don't remember the specifics but I remember seeing writing posts on pinterest and was like hm well might as well go directly to the source)
Shout out some of your favorite writeblrs. How did you find them and what made you want to follow them?
in no particular order and not an exclusive list: @aohendo @mecharose @scarvenartist @woodhousejay @baroquesse @tracle0 @klywrites @garthcelyn @incandescent-creativity @zmwrites @ashen-crest @ambiguouspuzuma @ettawritesnstudies @megarywrites @magic-is-something-we-create @pinespittinink @isherwoodj just a few of the many excellent people here
What is your favorite part about writeblr?
I just love the community aspect of interacting with other writers, or even just seeing what everyone's working on and how it's going. Even if someone's wip isn't my exact cup of tea I still like seeing posts about their work and people encouraging each other.
What do you think writeblr could improve on? How do you think we can go about doing so?
A lot of people say that interaction is dead etc. but I don't really think that's true. I think focusing less on reblogs and more on comments/asks as a form of interaction would strengthen the feeling of community. Not everyone is obligated to reblog everything and comments and asks can be more personal anyway. I like knowing other people are seeing what I put out there, and I especially love getting comments on my work, but that doesn't mean I need everyone to share it. I'd rather have 5 followers that interact with me than 1000 who don't. Quality over quantity, you know?
How do you contribute to the writeblr community? Do you think you could be doing more?
Of course everyone could always be doing more. I like to read other's snippets when I'm in the headspace for it, but sometimes I'm just here to mindlessly scroll and that's okay too. If I read something and I think it's cool or interesting or well-written or anything I try to either leave a reply or reblog with something in the tags. If I can't think of anything to say just quoting a line that I liked will suffice (I like when people do that to me). I do want to try sending more asks to people—I try to always send one when I see someone's reblogged an ask game, but I think everyone would appreciate some out-of-the-blue asks as well :)
What kinds of posts do you most like to interact with?
All kinds but I am most likely to interact with shorter posts about peoples' process or something about their characters. @klywrites will post about tiny interactions between her characters and I literally love them just from seeing tiny scenes on my dash every so often. I really like to read longer snippets and short stories too (there's some amazing writers here y'all) but I'm more likely to scroll past those if I can't spare the focus. Also I love seeing art! even from people who don't consider themselves artists like aww you drew your little guy and I love them now
What kind of posts do you most like to make?
idk I end up just vagueposting about my process most of the time. I love to infodump about my characters/worldbuilding but I don't do it too often. I also like to post about writing things in general, but I don't consider myself an expert or anything so I'm not putting out a ton of advice—just what works for me

The dear @choppedmint tagged me! Thank you, my friend!
Last Song: A modern interpretation of A dolefull ditty, or sorowfull sonet of the Lord Darly, sometime king of Scots, neuew to the noble and worthy King Henry the eyght and is to be song to the tune of blacke and yellowe. Because who doesn't like a catchy tune about two of the most infamous murders of the 16th century?
Favourite colour: Emerald green, red, and the colour of the sea.
Currently watching: Bodkin, and every now and then, I return to The First Churchills.
Spicy/Savoury/Sweet: All of these have their time and place!
Relationship status: There are some things I don't put on Tumblr.
Current Obsession: The strong desire to know what happened in the aftermath of certain letters from 1745-46. I need to know how the drama ended. That, and reading other dead people's private letters.
Tagging @basket-lily @unanchored-ship @benjhawkins @chiropteracupola and @sanguinarysanguinity in case you're interested! Everyone else who would like to participate, please consider yourself tagged by me as well.
