Moth of the Week
Banded Tussock Moth
Halysidota tessellaris
Tumblr media
[Right | Left]
The banded tussock moth is a part of the family Erebidae, the tiger moth family. It was first described in 1797 by James Edward Smith. This species is also called the pale tiger moth, banded tussock moth, and tessellated halisidota. The common name “banded tussock” moth comes from the clumps of longer hairs that protrude amid the shorter ones on the caterpillars, called “tussocks.” The scientific name “tessellaris” refers to a tessellated pattern, or a pattern made of small stones similar to the pattern on this moth’s forewings.
Description This species has light brown, tan, or cream wings and upper body. The abdomen is a yellow-orange. The forewings have a pattern of beige bands with thin black outlines while the hindwings are blank. On the back of the thorax are two orange stripes with a teal stripe on either side. Adult males and females are identical in color and pattern.
Wingspan: 3.81 - 5.08 cm (1.5 - 2 in)
The caterpillars are covered in long hair that ranges from yellow-orange to dark gray. At the head and bottom of the caterpillars are especially long clumps of white, black, or orange hairs.
Caterpillar length: 3.5 cm (≈1.38 in)
Diet and Habitat Larvae of this moth feed on some species of alder, ash, apple, beech, birch, blueberry, boxelder, chestnut, chokecherry, elm, grape, hackberry, hazel, hickory, oak, sycamore, walnut, and willow. They eat the leaf tissue between leaf veins.
This moth lives in North America and ranges from southern Canada to Texas and central Florida. They inhabit wooded areas with different types of deciduous trees. Adults may be seen by lights at night.
Mating In the north, this species is univoltine with one generation and year while in the south, it is multivoltine with two or more generations on the south. In Missouri, a two generation a year habitat, adult moths are seen from early May until the end of August. They presumably mate during this time. Eggs are laid in masses on the undersides of host plant leaves. Caterpillars overwinter in cocoons made from their own hair.
Predators This moth and its larvae are preyed on by birds, salamanders, toads, bats (Eptesicus fuscus), and 9 different parasitoid wasps (Braconidae).
Caterpillars of this moth are covered in long hairs that are thought to cause stinging and rashes like other similar species. The larvae behave as if they are chemically protected, but they have not been tested for alkaloids according to Wikipedia. Adults are confirmed to have and use alkaloids like other moths in the Erebidae family. They gain these toxins from their diet as caterpillars which makes them unpalatable to predators.
Fun Fact Although some moths in the subfamily Arctiinae are called “tussock moths,” there is a different subfamily (Lymantriinae) also in the Erebidae that are called the “true tussock moths.” Lymantriinae moths used to be in their own family but are now grouped together with other subfamilies under the family Erebidae.
Adult banded tussock moths are visually very similar to adult sycamore tussock moths (Halysidota harrisii). Scientists even need to dissect the two in order to tell the difference.

This is not her account. It is review on Gaye Ozpinar service as immigration lawyer in the United States.
As an immigration lawyer in the United States Gaye Ozpinar misguided several clients who relied on her legal advice for their immigration process in the country. After victimized her clients by spending their time, energy, money, hopes and dreams for their new lives, Gaye Ozpinar disappeared by saying “I decided to stop my service as an immigration lawyer”. Her victimized clients were left without legal support in their immigration process. As her clients realized, she did several mistakes during their American immigration application process and so on.
After ruining people lives and immigration process in America, she appeared as PhD student on American immigration law and history!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  [1]. It is an inspiring scientific story, right!?!
If you value your life, if your dreams and hopes about for your new life in the United States are important for you, if your money, time, energy are important for you, never work with her. She is not recommended as an immigration lawyer, PhD student, scientific individual. After such a service as an immigration lawyer, her papers, PhD, academic studies mean nothing.
With Emrah Altindis, they are critical human rights issues in Turkey. You know, there are tons of people critical human rights in Turkey to find a way staying, living, career in America. But, they never mention how many people lives have been ruined because of misguidance by Gaye Ozpinar as immigration lawyer in America. Their human rights?
With official documents, top official authorities and several immigration lawyers in America know these cases very well with documents. A new book is on the way by her misguided clients, English and Turkish. She can use her clients book as a reference in her PhD.

Senior archivist Dr. Greg Bradsher, National Archives at College Park.  National Archives photo by Susanna Raab
Legendary Archivist Likened to Professional Athlete—first time ever
“As archivists go, Greg Bradsher ’68 is retiring as a superstar, the Michael Jordan or Tom Brady of his profession.” The first sentence of the Oregon Stater feature “If an archivist can be a legend, he's it” may mark the first time an archivist has been likened to a professional athlete. On the eve of his retirement, it doesn’t get any better. Bradsher responded, “I was blown away.”
Last year, senior archivist Dr. Greg Bradsher received Archivist David S. Ferriero’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his impressive 42-plus-year career (watch video tribute here and below). After sharing the news with Bradsher’s alma maters, Oregon State University (OSU) and the University of Massachusetts (Amherst), Oregon Stater editor Kevin Miller called to say that he had pulled over to the side of the road en route to work to Google Bradsher. Asked what he found compelling, Miller responded, “Once I’d done some research of my own and conducted a long interview with Greg in which we both had fun and I learned a ton, the pressure was all on me to do his career justice. I’ve been writing profiles of people for 43 years now—15 of them in this joband this is one of my top 10 favorites, for sure.”
Bradsher’s stellar research skills, intellectual curiosity, humor, cordiality, and expansive knowledge contributed to his now-legendary career. As Bradsher’s colleague archivist Sylvia Naylor explained, “he is the perfect combination of scholar and archivist. His knowledge of the records never ceases to amaze me.” Although his expertise includes the American colonial era, the Homestead Act, and FBI records collections, he is reknowned for his work on records relating to Holocaust-Era Assets.
In 1996, at the start of the congressional investigation into dormant Swiss bank accounts and gold looted by Nazi Germany, Bradsher was asked to create a basic finding aid for the National Archives’ extensive collection of related World War II–era records. Given his intellectual curiosity and interest, this initial six-page document became a 1,166-page tome. The National Archives became the epicenter of Holocaust-related research, and he became the international point person on this issue.

UMass Hockey played UConn last night, Feb29th 2020. With too many starters injured to list, the Minutemen took the ice with players filling in a different positions than they even play. Honoring SENIOR NIGHT as well, it was an incredible testament to the Coaching staff and the Tenacity of the players, to rack a win, with two LATE THIRD PERIOD GOALS!
Aside my Colleague the, ‘People’s Choice Chancelor, Thomas Doherty,( TD ), my big brother, and Mentor, we watched a nearly crippled lineup of freshman + sophomores, play their hearts out. No one can say these kids left ANYTHING ON TGE ICE LAST NIGHT, with 2 Goals to rally back and win, with Under TWO MINUTES TO PLAY. Last night Was the Exclamation Point after the description ; “Determination, Relentless, Unbreakable”, of the College Hockey East Powerhouse. Coaches and Players feed off each other, and both a freshman and a sophomore took command scoring the needed 2 goals, after entering the last 12 minutes up 2 to 1. UConn rallied to go ahead, but the two unanswered 3rd period goals were exactly what we needed for a WIN! As an Alumni, and Assistant Alumni Chairman to TD, I had to compile a short video inspired by the Minutemen all season. Luckily THATS MY DAY JOB, photography and filmmaking, so here Fans, players, Faculty, Athletic Dept, ya GO! ENJOY!!!!!’

Standing Stones - Amherst, MA?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not exactly ‘Stonehenge’ - there are no ‘henges’  - on the campus of University of Massachusetts Amherst. My bf and I were out driving and stumbled on these stones placed astronomically by the Astrology Department off Studium Drive.
Oddly, the day before, we had attended a very low-key Pagan Pride in Florence, MA, and we both thought that despite no electricity ot toilets - that this would have made a better and more appropriate site for the festival.

Sana Mustafa- Week 1 - Cultural Observation
Sana Mustafa- Week 1
Life has always been a roller coaster ride to me. When I look back I see a panorama of experiences and learning. Out of my all experiences, my trip to USA has been on the top of the list. In my first week, I came to learn about living differences and cultural norms of people here in America. Coming across the border beyond my city and living among a new culture helped me gain self-clarity and observe the cultural differences among the citizens.
I belong to the city of gardens and colors and experiencing USA has been amazing so far.
The major differences I observed were:
Food
Being a Lahori comes with a lot of perks that includes tasty and delicious food. American food is milder in taste and for a Lahori like me, it is not sufficient to compete the taste of food of Pakistan.
Status Quo
In USA people would take red collar jobs to make a living or initially start their career. However, in Pakistan, nominal jobs are considered disgrace and people would not take red collar jobs until they hunt for a nice one.
Women Empowerment
Women in USA are liberated, they are free to make their life choices and live up to their decisions however, in Pakistan decisions like marrying a man or opting a major is a hassle and sometimes they’re not given right to make their decision.
Family systems
In Pakistan the ties between families are very strong. We are connected to families beyond anything and in the time of crises whole community gets together to support other. In USA people are not co-dependent and more professional. The kids normally move out of homes by the age of 18 and they get on their own.
Cultural Acceptance
Talking of the cultural comparisons, in the foreign culture is accepted openly and nobody really judges one for their dress up and personal preferences. However, in Pakistan the local culture is monopolistic and foreign culture is not that accepted openly.
Law Enforcement
United States takes enforces law gracefully, there are proper systems to report harassment and other matters. Even crossing a road not properly is not accepted to avoid accidents. Everything is systematic and done with thorough responsivity.
Organized VS. Unorganized
The systems, roads, procedure from tiny to major all are organized. However, in Pakistan the systems still need a lot of improvement to streamline their systems on political, federal and local levels.
Government response to citizens
Government provide proper health care, shelter and other subsidies. In Pakistan due to economical downfalls and higher increasing rates the government is still struggling to improve their country’s conditions.
People’s behavior
Americans are cool, easy going yet professional. However, Pakistan are warmhearted, loving and more open. Pakistanis share their personal lives openly which comes a lot of interference from the other relatives and community members sometimes.
