[1] I‘m still standing (ENG/DE) —Monday, 15.07.24
(ENG)
So, even though my clothes are sticking to me and I feel like I'm dripping out of every pore, I'm back at my accommodation in a good mood. Today I fell straight back into my old sleeping pattern and didn't wake up until 10am. Before you say, for God's sake, you need to get out of bed earlier to make the most of everything, I made the most of it. Here in Korea, real life doesn't start until the evening. So I took my time to get ready and then took the subway back to the "Semyeon" district. From there, I first went to the "Busan Citizien Park". A beautifully designed walk with as much greenery as possible. It has to be said that despite the ultra-modern buildings here, there is hardly a spot where you won't find any plants. A big plus point. After the tour of the park, I made my way to the temple called "Samgwangsa". The walk there was anything but easy, but I accepted the challenge. Once at the top of the hill, the temple turned out to be 5 individual buildings that made up one temple. The view was breathtaking. The structures of the roofs and walls alone, with all their colors and patterns, are admirable. Several staircases led to new buildings again and again, the last staircase I came to led me directly to a small hiking trail & I ended up in the forest. You're thinking, forest? In the middle of the city? Yep, that's right. The mountains here are natural and almost completely untouched. It's like being immersed in another world, so I just followed my nose & the path. At some point, after about 15 minutes, I came back to civilization & made my way to the metro. I walked through the city for 50 minutes & saw something new to photograph & admire at almost every corner. I then took the metro to "Gwangali Beach", where I spent the rest of the day. Strolling along the promenade, watching the waves break and listening to the sea. A perfect moment. Except that my stomach was starting to crave food, this time it was pizza ;) Five Cheese Pizza, it felt like heaven, also the waitress was super kind and took some photos of me because I loved the view I had from my seat.
To be continued…
(DE)
Ich habe mich also in Ruhe fertig gemacht & bin dann per U-Bahn wieder ins Viertel „Semyeon“ gefahren.
Fortsetzung folgt…

Jerry Lee Lewis, c. July 1959. From JLL.org
Elvis Presley, Knickerbocker Hotel, Hollywood, August 18, 1956. From ElvisPresleyMusic.com.
[ 12 Days of Christmas 💕 5/12 ]
At the start of my research, I found all sorts of stories, I wasn’t sure were even true. Like, Elvis and Jerry Lee riding around on motorcycles, with no clothes on the streets of Memphis, in the middle of the night? No way – but as time passed, the story got brought up to him three times (from what I know). He had a consistent reaction, that has led me to believe it happened.
Though, the stories are subjective, so you can draw your own conclusion!
The first reference of the story:
“In a crowded basement meeting room at the posh Omni-Memphis Hotel, 20-some journalists are attempting, with difficulty, to grill the subject of the forthcoming film “Great Balls of Fire”
The discussion, which never quite seems to interconnect, has degenerated to a foreign-sounding report’s question about whether the film’s subject, Jerry Lee Lewis – rock music’s archetypal bad boy – ever motorbiked naked with Elvis Presley, his fellow Memphian an ultra-rival.
“Motorbike?” Lewis says, archly, dismissively.
“Nekkid? Me and Elvis Presley?” His eyes suddenly narrow, “how’d you know that?”
“It’s in Joe Smith’s book,” says a reporter.
“You can’t believe nothin’…” Lewis mutters, his voice trailing off. “Well, that was 3 o’clock in the morning,” he suddenly adds, prompting explosive laughter from the journalists. “It really was,” he goes on with a grain.
“There was nobody out then—except this one policeman on a horse, and he was doing his dead-level best to catch us. Now, that was a sight. If anybody woulda saw that, we never woulda sold no more records. That woulda been the end of that.” Pause, his eyes narrowing again. “How’d you know that?”
“It’s in Joe Smith’s book,” the reporter repeats.
“Who’s Joe Smith?”
“The head of Capitol Records. Used to be head of Elektra Records.”
“Well, that’s ridiculous. That’s not right. Do you believe that?”
“You just told us it happened at 3 o’clock in the morning,” the reported notes.
“I can’t believe people will believe anything you say.”
“Well, is it true?” Another reporter asks.
“Yes. It’s true.”
Welcome, folks to talking with the Killer, a 54-year-old rock king dethroned before his time – in fact, before his prime – by the 1958 disclosure of a mad marriage to his 13-year-old second cousin.
The scandal caused Lewis, a Bible college dropout, to fall from rock ‘n’ roll grace into comparative oblivion – made all the more bruising by the fact that he was arguably the most intense performer, and most brilliant self-taught pianist, to ever rattle music stages around the world.”
From “THE KILLER BLOWS SMOKE FOR ‘FIRE’” by Jack Hurst and Country music. Chicago Tribune, June 24, 1989.
The second reference is from the book the reporter mentioned, actually, it’s called “Buddy Holly: Biography” by Ellis Amburn. In it, Ellis wrote that record executive Joe Smith and Jerry Lee spoke on the plane, during Buddy Holly, along with Paul Anka’s tour to Australia. They’d been drinking when Jerry Lee “confessed,” which is the word Ellis used. That yes, indeed, he and Elvis went on a naked motorcycle ride at 2:30 AM in Memphis, in a young Jerry Lee’s own words; “only for thirty-five or forty seconds, ‘round the corner and back.”
The third reference was from “Jerry Lee Lewis: His Own Story” by Rick Bragg. When asked the same question, instead of brushing it off or saying it wasn’t true. Jerry Lee laughed and said he can’t say anything about that because “Elvis isn’t here to defend himself.”
So, while Jerry Lee was right that you can’t believe everything anyone says, that doesn’t mean there aren’t patterns. Maybe, he thought it was funny to lie. Maybe, it happened and so what? It’s just two bros cruising down the street at night, naked on motorbikes, 5 feet apart – ‘cause they’re not gay. 😋
Other important lessons are if you do happen to go motorbiking naked with your supposed arch nemesis, don’t get caught, and don’t tell anyone about it!

Taylor Swift is sending a powerful message to women on the Eras tour
Analysis by Emily Halnon, CNN
Taylor Swift performs onstage during the "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour" at Allegiant Stadium on March 24 in Las Vegas.
(CNN) My first stirrings of discomfort at Taylor Swift's show in Las Vegas hit after the infectious beat faded from fan-favorite "Cruel Summer," the second song in her supersized set.
Swift strutted across the stage in a sequin bodysuit and matching boots. Her cat eye was drawn sharp enough to kill a man, as she says.
She thanked the crowd of thousands of cheering fans for their deafening support and as the roars died down, she paused, and then bellowed out the line that undid me — and sent a powerful message about embracing success to the tens of thousands of women in attendance.
"You're making me feel like I'm the first woman to ever headline Allegiant Stadium."
She flicked her gaze down to her biceps and pumped her arms in victory.
The crowd lost it. My jaw dropped. My gut clenched and braced itself for a blow.
I'd just heard Swift, a woman, bellow out her accomplishment, with no qualifiers, no, "I did a thing" and not a single ounce of humility to soften the punch.
It was just an unapologetic and audacious declaration of her success.
Challenging double standards
When I walked into Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, I expected to be blown away by Swift and the 44 songs she performs live for the "Eras Tour." But I didn't expect to feel uncomfortable at her declaration of her unbridled ambition.
The timing of her declaration was a little cheeky; it was part of her introduction to the song, "The Man," which calls attention to the sexist double standards that women face, including ones Swift has battled in the music industry.
"What's it like to brag about raking in dollars and getting bitches and models," she sang. "If I was out flashing my dollars, I'd be a bitch, not a baller."
When she shouted out her accomplishment in Las Vegas, alongside a matching victory dance, I'm sure it was meant to conjure masculinity and highlight the double standard surrounding success, since nothing Taylor Alison Swift does is unintentional. She's known for leaving an unending trail of Easter eggs for her fans to find and decipher, which reveal clues about things like album drops and the true meaning of a lyric.
She's a mastermind in everything she does, sings and shouts to a football stadium full of fans.
That's why, even if the timing was part of her performance around "The Man," it was also no accident that Swift decided to belt out her success that night.
And whether we were cringing in our seats, like me, or cheering her on, also like me, her words delivered a powerful message.
I'm insecure about my own ambition
Emily Halnon runs through Diamond Peak Wilderness on the Pacific Crest Traail.
The discomfort I felt had nothing to do with Swift or her record-setting performance. My inner cringe was fueled by my own insecurities with female ambition and the social conditioning that has taught me to shy away from owning my successes. I was projecting my own unease on Swift.
Intellectually, I root for ambitious women to take up space in the world, but emotionally, I've got some deep-seated resistance to the idea, as evidenced by my gut reaction.
Like Swift, who will perform for over three straight hours on every night of this 52-stop tour, I'm also an endurance athlete. I'm a long-distance trail runner, and while I'm not even close to being the Taylor Swift of ultra running, I have experienced some successes in my athletic endeavors — but I can barely talk about them in front of a single person, never mind 70 thousands of them.
Like, when I raced a 50-miler a couple of summers ago, and friends asked me how I did.
"I had a lot of fun," I'd say. "I felt strong all day."
I usually waited for my partner or someone else to fill-in-the-blank that I'd won the race. Or I'd just leave that detail out. I do that often, whether it's my finisher place, pace or distance.
I don't want to be 'that' woman
I don't want to brag, or seem cocky, competitive, or, heaven forbid, self-promotional. That phrase alone feels dirtier than the floor of a football stadium after a three-hour show.
I've watched women get villainized for ambition and success since I could say the words, "Hillary Clinton." I know the safer path for a woman is to be humble and modest.
When I decided to attempt a speed record on the 460-mile stretch of the Oregon Pacific Crest Trail, one of the hardest parts of the run was telling people about my goal, which was a requirement for this record.
I didn't want to come off as a strong and competitive woman, who believed that I was capable of achieving something big. I certainly didn't want to seem like I was chasing success, an ambitious woman with the audacity to be confident. The better story would be to stumble into an accomplishment, not to overtly hunt it down myself.
In my first draft of this essay, the one I didn't initially share with my editor, I omitted that I went on to set that record — and beat the men's times, as well. (Editor's note: One of her most notable runs was setting the overall Fastest Known Time on the 460-mile Oregon PCT in 7 days, 19 hours, and 23 minutes.)
She had a powerful impact on me
My discomfort in Las Vegas transitioned to awe, followed Swiftly by a "Hell yeah, Taylor."
By the time I was back home in Oregon, I couldn't stop thinking about how powerful it was that Swift was so bold. It didn't stop at that one statement — she delivered a three-hour masterclass in confidence and pride in what she's accomplished. And I liked it. I think most of us at Allegiant Stadium did. Over the course of this tour, millions of women will watch her share her success.
At least one of those women in the audience needed to hear her to celebrate her own success (and probably more than I would've guessed based on my initial reaction).
I watched clips of her performance at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, the next weekend. When the beat from "Cruel Summer" faded, she did it again.
"I'm the first artist to play three nights in this stadium," she shouted.
I watched her shimmy, her face full of unapologetic joy as she shook her hips in front of tens of thousands of people, and this time, I didn't cringe. I thought about how I can be a little more like Swift the next time I succeed.
ts1989fanatic in 2023 no successful woman should feel this way, and if just a few of those approximately 70,000 per show walk away feeling empowered by Taylor Swift as this writer did. Then we are at least making some progress.

The Most Recent Advances in Ski Technology: Cutting Edge on the Slopes
Skiing has come a long way from its origins as a simple mode of transportation in snowy terrains. Today, it’s an exhilarating sport where speed, precision, and enjoyment are heightened by cutting-edge technology. As the demand for better performance, comfort, and safety increases, manufacturers are constantly innovating to enhance the skiing experience. From ski materials and bindings to gear that can monitor your every move, the skiing world has entered a new era of high-tech sophistication. Let's dive into some of the latest breakthroughs reshaping the slopes.
High-Tech Ski Materials
One of the most significant areas of advancement in ski technology is the use of innovative materials. Gone are the days when skis were primarily made from wood and metal. Modern skis now incorporate materials like carbon fiber, Kevlar, and advanced composites that improve performance, reduce weight, and increase durability.
Carbon fiber is not only lightweight but also incredibly strong. Skis made from carbon fiber offer enhanced maneuverability and precision, allowing skiers to make sharp turns and navigate challenging terrain with ease. These skis are especially popular among competitive skiers who need responsive gear to optimize speed and control.
Titanal, a lightweight metal alloy, is increasingly being used in ski construction for added stability and vibration dampening. When incorporated into a ski’s core, it helps distribute weight evenly and minimizes chatter on icy or hard-packed snow. This results in a smoother, more controlled skiing experience, particularly at high speeds.
Graphene, an ultra-thin and incredibly strong material, is also finding its way into the construction of skis. This material is used to make skis that are both lightweight and highly responsive. Skis with graphene layers allow for faster turns and better control while maintaining the flexibility needed to navigate varied terrain. Some companies, like Head, have integrated graphene into their top-tier skis, making them a favorite among elite skiers.
Adjustable Flex and Shape
Skiers no longer need to compromise between skis for different snow conditions. Thanks to innovations like adjustable flex and adaptive shapes, modern skis can now alter their performance depending on the terrain and skier’s preference.
Manufacturers like Elan and K2 have developed skis with variable flex technology, allowing skiers to adjust the stiffness of their skis on the fly. This feature enables a skier to soften the flex for powder days and stiffen it when tackling more aggressive terrain or harder snow. These types of skis are gaining popularity for their versatility, offering a tailored experience based on snow conditions and skiing style.
Another breakthrough comes from adaptive ski shapes. Companies such as Rossignol and Atomic have introduced skis with rocker-camber-rocker profiles, meaning they offer both a curved (rocker) and flat (camber) profile depending on where pressure is applied. This hybrid shape allows the ski to float better in deep snow while maintaining edge grip on groomed trails. It’s a fantastic all-mountain solution that minimizes the need for multiple pairs of skis for varying conditions.
Innovations in Ski Bindings
Bindings are an often overlooked yet essential component of skiing technology. Recent innovations in bindings are enhancing both safety and performance.
For those interested in backcountry skiing or alpine touring, hybrid bindings are a game-changer. These bindings allow skiers to switch between traditional downhill modes and uphill touring modes with ease. Companies like Marker and Salomon have developed bindings that let the skier release the heel for an efficient uphill trek, then lock it back down for secure downhill performance. This versatility makes hybrid bindings popular among skiers who enjoy both resort and backcountry skiing.
Safety is always a priority on the slopes, and modern bindings are helping to reduce the risk of injury. Multi-directional release systems, such as those found in Look Pivot bindings, allow the binding to release in multiple directions during a fall, reducing the chance of knee or ankle injuries. This innovation ensures that the skier can push their limits while minimizing the risk of injury from equipment failure or improper release.
Electronic ski bindings are another cutting-edge development. Companies like Rottefella have introduced bindings with electronic adjustments that adapt to the skier’s movements and skiing style. These smart bindings can adjust release settings automatically, providing real-time safety adaptations based on the skier’s weight, speed, and type of terrain. Although still in its infancy, this technology promises to revolutionize how skiers interact with their gear.
Wearable Tech and Smart Equipment
The intersection of skiing and technology doesn’t stop at skis and bindings. Wearable technology and smart equipment are making their way into the skiing world, offering real-time data, safety features, and enhanced user experiences.
Safety helmets have always been an essential part of skiing, but modern iterations now come equipped with advanced features such as integrated cameras, GPS systems, and impact sensors. Companies like POC and Smith Optics have introduced helmets that can detect head injuries and even send emergency alerts to designated contacts if a serious fall is detected. Some models are also equipped with Bluetooth speakers, allowing skiers to take calls or listen to music while cruising down the mountain.
Wearables such as ski-specific smartwatches and apps are becoming increasingly popular. Apps like Ski Tracks and Garmin’s Fenix watch provide detailed analytics on a skier’s performance, including speed, distance traveled, and vertical drop. Some devices even offer GPS navigation and avalanche warnings, helping skiers stay safe in unfamiliar backcountry terrain. This data-driven approach allows skiers to track their progress, set goals, and improve their performance over time.
Comfort is crucial on the slopes, and nobody likes having cold feet or hands during a long day of skiing. That’s where heated boots and gloves come into play. Heated ski boots, like those from Therm-ic, offer adjustable heat settings that can keep feet warm for hours. Similarly, heated gloves with battery-powered elements ensure that hands stay toasty, even in the coldest conditions. These advancements in wearable technology allow skiers to focus on the thrill of the sport, not the discomfort of the cold.
Sustainable Ski Gear
As the outdoor industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact, ski manufacturers are responding with more sustainable and eco-friendly gear options.
Brands like Black Crows and DPS are leading the charge in creating eco-friendly skis by using sustainable materials such as bamboo, flax fiber, and recycled plastics. These materials not only reduce the environmental footprint of ski production but also perform just as well, if not better, than traditional materials. Additionally, some companies are exploring bio-based resins and other renewable resources to further decrease the ecological impact of their skis.
Many ski companies are also focusing on producing gear that is recyclable or easily repairable, extending the life of the product and reducing waste. Some manufacturers offer ski boots with modular parts that can be easily replaced, ensuring that a damaged part doesn’t necessitate a whole new boot. Similarly, ski jackets and pants are being designed with longer-lasting materials and repairable components, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
The Future of Skiing Technology
As technology continues to evolve, the skiing industry is poised for even more groundbreaking innovations. Concepts like artificial intelligence and augmented reality could soon make their way into skiing gear, providing even greater customization and immersive experiences. AI-equipped skis could adapt in real-time to changes in terrain or snow conditions, while augmented reality goggles could offer navigation assistance, highlighting the best routes down a slope or warning of upcoming hazards.
The fusion of traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology is bringing skiing into a new era of performance, safety, and enjoyment. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a casual enthusiast, the latest innovations in ski technology ensure that there’s never been a better time to hit the slopes. From smart helmets to adaptable skis, the future of skiing promises to be as thrilling as the sport itself.

I Biked 165 Miles Behind the Pine Curtain of East Texas
On a damp March morning, I strapped bags full of camping gear to the frame of my gravel bike and joined about 250 cyclists for the fourth annual East Texas Showdown, one of the state’s biggest and longest bikepacking events.
The starting line was in Point Blank, about twenty miles east of Huntsville.
For the first hour or so, the pack rode east together, swarming the two-mile stretch of U.S. 190 spanning the massive breadth of Lake Livingston.
Those first ten miles were deceptively smooth as we fell into pace and familiarized ourselves with the faces we’d get to know for the next 165 (or 280 or 400) miles.
We said goodbye to the smooth highway as we turned onto our first gravel road.
Then we hit peanut butter: thick, sticky mud with water pooled on top like the oil in a Jif container before you stir it around.
I churned the pedals in an effort to keep my tires cutting through the muck, moving just barely fast enough to keep from falling over.
When cyclists sign up for the East Texas Showdown, they agree to face whatever the elements toss their way, be it loose dogs, craggy potholes, flat tires, or fearsome East Texas drivers.
Bikepacking, in which riders carry everything they need to support themselves along their chosen route, was once the domain of a relatively small yet serious endurance cycling community, but in recent years it’s become more popular with weekend warriors like myself.
Along with gravel grinding, bikepacking surged in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, when thousands of Texans headed outdoors as a respite from cabin fever.
For many, the longer distances of bikepacking are a natural progression from shorter, off-road routes.
Online interest in the sport appears to have exploded since the early 2010s, with the rise of websites like Bikepacking.com, which publishes user-submitted routes and other useful information for cyclists.
The sport encourages individualism, resourcefulness, and a good sense of humor to deal with unexpected challenges.
The Showdown’s turnout reflects bikepacking’s popularity; it has sold out and had a waiting list every year since the event began in 2020.
Last year, a heavy rain swept East Texas the night before the race.
The flood that followed broke a levy on the route, forcing some riders to wade through a waist-deep creek while carrying their bikes overhead.
This time, mud threw riders for a loop on the predominantly off-road course, coating the trails for miles on end.
As I watched several riders fall into the gooey, treacherous mud, I remembered something race creator Patrick Farnsworth had said the night before.
“Be selfish,” he’d encouraged the crowd at the pre-race meeting. “We live in a crazy world that is full of demands. Starting now, you have the opportunity to be a steward to yourself.”
Between the 400-mile Showdown, the 280-mile Slowdown, and the 165-mile, untimed Lowdown, riders choose their own flavor of so-called type II fun.
(That’s the term outdoors enthusiasts use to refer to a pursuit that is miserable while you’re doing it but seems fun with the benefit of hindsight.)
As a new bikepacker, I signed up for the Lowdown and planned to finish in two days—though there is no cutoff time for any of the routes.
Farnsworth said he designed the three routes as a natural progression for new bikepackers to immerse themselves in the sport.
Four hundred miles may sound like a lot, but it’s actually pretty short in ultra-bikepacking terms.
The sport’s Tour de France is the Tour Divide, which follows the Continental Divide for 2,750 miles between the Canadian and Mexican borders.
For Hannah Simon, a well-known ultracyclist in Austin, the East Texas Showdown served as a launch pad.
She’s now completed the Triple Crown, a designation reserved for three of the longest and most difficult bikepacking races the sport has to offer: the Tour Divide, the eight-hundred-mile Arizona Trail, and the five-hundred-mile Colorado Trail.
Ultimately, Farnsworth envisions the East Texas Showdown as one in a series of three races that will serve as the Lone Star State’s answer to the Triple Crown.
The routes increase in difficulty as they progress westward: The East Texas Showdown reveals what lies behind the Pine Curtain, guiding cyclists through numerous sleepy downtowns and swampy palmetto groves and into two of the region’s four national forests.
The Central Texas Showdown, which Farnsworth organized for the first time last fall, takes riders up and down 22,000 feet of elevation over 467 miles in the Hill Country.
Finally, the West Texas Showdown, which Farnsworth plans to launch next February, will be about 400 miles and the most difficult yet.
That race will be open only to more experienced riders, who will be challenged to navigate the sparse, sprawling, and dramatic Chihuahuan Desert in and around Big Bend.
“There are hardly any resupplies there. Very pokey, proddy, sunny—all the things,” Farnsworth said. “It will be the crown jewel of the series whenever it’s completed.”
Because of the nature of aerodynamics in a peloton, road cycling is infamously cutthroat.
Road races such as the Tour de France often come down to a calculated chess match of positioning with other riders, which Lance Armstrong once described as a time to “get your hate on.”
Off-road bikepacking couldn’t be more different.
Most off-road races are solo and self-supported, so drafting off other riders is prohibited.
Bikepackers fight the elements, not each other.
“You have to concentrate. Not on other people—on the road,” said Dennis Lastochkin, this year’s Showdown winner, who lives in Austin.
The race’s fastest riders don’t stop to sleep.
This year, Lastochkin rolled into the parking lot of Point Blank’s Bullet Grill, the Showdown’s start and end point, just over thirty hours after the race began.
He couldn’t let his mind wander or go on autopilot as he staved off sleep deprivation and scanned the road for potential dangers, such as cars or potholes.
The hours passed quickly as he calculated the time until his next water stop, or the number of calories he needed to consume at the upcoming gas station.
“It’s more of an internal competition. You’re competing against yourself, against the world, against the elements,” Lastochkin explained.
In the Showdown’s shorter-distance routes, stopping to smell the flowers is encouraged.
In late March, bluebonnets, pink ladies, and Indian paintbrushes bloomed in the breaks between tall pines.
I took in the views alongside Madeleine Pelzel, a Houston-based urban planner who works on bike-lane development.
Like many of the Showdown riders, she lives and breathes cycling, building the sport into her career.
Back at the Bullet Grill, I’d seen the classic trope of bikes more expensive than the beater cars their owners drove, but a good number of bikes riders could have been scored for $200 on Facebook Marketplace.
Showdown riders spanned all ages, and I was also grateful to see some women and nonbinary individuals.
But like many ultradistance sports, bikepacking is still dominated by men, who accounted for more than three-quarters of the cyclists I saw that weekend.
Participants are expected to bring all they'll need for a two-day ride, including setting up camp in the evening. Participants setting up camp in the evening. They are expected to bring all they’ll need for a two-day ride. Maxwell Johnston
Pelzel and I got to know each other on the first day of the ride as we rode together for 75 miles and chatted over a gas station feast of fried pickles on a stick, hot wings, and a can of Pringles.
The race brings bike nerds together, but it also acquaints them with communities along the route.
“The local community really embraces the race,” said Simon. “The ladies at the Dollar General get so excited when they see us.”
Farnsworth encourages a more relaxed take on bikepacking by awarding Lowdown riders prizes for the most creative outfit and best energy on the course.
The first night of the Lowdown, I joined a large group of riders who set up camp at Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area in the Davy Crockett National Forest, between Lufkin and Crockett.
Two volunteers, fans of Farnsworth’s Bikes or Death podcast from Florida, grilled hot dogs for the cyclists and crew.
I sipped a Yuengling by the lake before waddling back to my tent to nurse my aching quads and chaffed behind.
Before setting out the next morning, I joined a group for some fireside commiseration about the previous day’s grueling mud. As one man, a Houston-based attorney, said, “It beats being in court.”
My second, longer day in the saddle was easier than the first.
The sun came out and baked the mud into drier clay as I rode throughout the morning.
It gleamed off the shining Trinity River as I approached Riverside, about twenty miles from the finish line. Less than two hours later, Farnsworth had his bullhorn in hand as I pulled into the parking lot of the Bullet Grill, completing my 165-mile journey.
“Thanks for riding your damn bike!” he yelled.
He wore a cowboy hat and tattoos poked out of his denim cutoffs.
Across his right forearm, Western lettering spelled out the name of his podcast, Bikes or Death.
Farnsworth started the show in 2018 as a hobby.
As a type-B recreationalist, or “pro-slow,” as he’s dubbed it, he liked how recording the podcast offered him a way to connect with the endurance athletes and bikepackers he admired.
But, as he soon discovered, “Podcasting is very lonely. I sit in my house and talk to people. Then, the listeners are having their own experiences that I never get to see.”
To bring people together, Farnsworth decided to start his own race.
A single father who juggles recording the podcast alongside his day job in real estate, he, like most people, often struggles to fit in long rides.
He wanted to create an event that amateur and elite cyclists alike could enjoy in one long weekend.
Farnsworth was born and raised in the Bryan–College Station area, where he still lives and bikes today.
“We’re not the mecca for outdoor sports,” he said. “This town does not have great cycling infrastructure, and I think that’s representative of Texas as a whole.”
As he soon discovered, the biggest limiting factor for his races is the state’s lack of public lands.
Only about three percent of the state is publicly owned, and the public spaces that are available are often overrun with visitors.
To plan a route, he needed campgrounds or other accommodations for bikepackers to sleep.
He also envies the miles of low-traffic, cyclist-friendly park roads and single-track trails available in more park-laden states like Idaho, New Mexico, or Arizona.
Farnsworth decided to make use of isolated Texas country roads for his routes, but planning around the constraints takes time.
“Scouting these routes can take six months to a year,” he said. “You plan it on the internet, put together a route, and find the best roads online, but then you have to go scout them in person. I’ll be out there for like a week at a time just driving around, trying different roads, and making notes. Then I’ll come back two or three times to revisit.”
The process has allowed him to fall back in love with his home state and see it in a new light.
“I think I sold Texas short,” Farnsworth said. “I’ve been completely awestruck by the natural beauty that is here.”Cycling East Texas

SEE: Mellow/Ambient Music | Haux - “Claire De Lune”
Haux, the alias of the Berkshires' Woodson Black, shares his new single "Claire De Lune." The new song is the second offering from his forthcoming sophomore album Blue Angeles, due spring 2024 via Ultra Records. Produced by Thomas Bartlett at Reservoir Studios, "Claire De Lune" is layered with cascading piano and soft guitar and arrives with a video featuring dancer Sayer Mansfield of Pilobolus and Compagnie Marie Chouinard. "Claire De Lune" comes after the lead single "Carte Blanche," which dropped with a self-directed video. Speaking about "Claire De Lune," Black shares, “I had a close friend who died in an accident six years ago. I was on tour in Vienna at the time and got the call after my show. I didn’t make it back for the service and the years flew by. I always wished I could like rewrite the script and be there for her at the end. It’s like this song became my own funeral fairytale. It gave me the chance to finally say goodbye in person.” Produced by Thomas Bartlett (Taylor Swift, Florence + The Machine, Sufjan Stevens), Maxwell Byrne (Mallrat), and Aug E. Rose, Blue Angeles was recorded in Los Angeles, New York City, and The Berkshires. The album follows Black as he attempts to outrun the past on highways across the United States until he eventually reaches the end of the road in Los Angeles, where he explores his own addiction and spirituality until ultimately finding healing in nature. When he returned home from Los Angeles, Black began a new chapter of his journey with his best friend at his grandmother’s East Mountain Retreat Center – a center practicing radical hospitality and interfaith spiritual guidance on the Appalachian Trail. Together, over the course of a calendar year, the two finished the remaining songs for the album, built a garden and began climbing trees. Woodson shares, “I was living in denial in LA. I couldn’t see the stars at night and the movie stars were living their lives in hiding. I needed to wake up and face the music. The mountain gave me a place to reconnect with my childhood and finally put down my phone. It allowed me to make peace with myself and to give thanks for the things I have in my life.” Woodson Black has been releasing music as Haux since his debut EP All We've Known in 2016. His elusive nature, dreamy falsetto, and self-directed style have created a world where listeners can breathe fresh air. Blue Angeles is the answer to Black's question, "What happens when we stop running away?" He adds, “I needed to grow up to write this record and that isn’t something that just happens overnight. It’s taken me the better part of three years and I needed all of it to be where I am today.” It is the long-awaited follow up to Haux's debut album Violence in a Quiet Mind, which was lauded by GRAMMY.com, The New York Times, and Pitchfork and features the stand out songs "Calico" and "Eight" featuring Rosie Carney. Kisokomaga-take, The High Point of the Chuo Alps
Kisokomaga-take is an ultra prominent peak, the high point of the Chuo Alps and one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan. Typically a peak with these kinds of credentials would be too difficult for a man with a very pregnant wife and an opinionated toddler to climb, however thankfully there is a ropeway that takes the softer variation of hiker to within 1,000 vertical feet of the summit. I planned to use this unapologetically. Tagging along with us was our dear friend Jon, who had joined me on a fruitful and adventurous tour of the Yatsuga-take mountain range the day prior.
We woke up at Hotel Route-Inn Komagane Inter, which had an incredibly rude and unintelligent staff. I will save our kind reader from the injustices endured, but I will strongly recommend future hikers to stay elsewhere. After breakfast we drove to the Suganodai Bus Center where we parked our car and waited for a bus to pick us up. After a long and windy ride, we arrived at Komagatake Ropeway Shirabidaira Station. We entered the gondola and flew briskly through the enchanted clouds above.
I had planned to put Leif in the carrier here, but he wanted to walk instead. The trail took us across and up the Senjojiki Cirque.
Leif hiked at a quick enough pace for a while, but eventually I put him in the carrier and we climbed up a series of switchbacks shrouded in clouds. We passed every single group ahead of us, even with babies in tow. We made it to the top of the ridge where there was a hut/restaurant then continued north.
The trail split here with one fork going around to the left and the other going up and over Naka-dake, an intermediate peak to the right. We took the path to the left as this required less gain, and soon after the crowds vanished.
I felt like we were in the Lord of the Rings.
We emerged at the saddle on the north side of Naka-dake and continued up the south slopes of Kisokomaga-take until we reached the summit.
We walked around a bit looking at the various summit structures and shrines, but there were no views to be had.
It was a little cold so we didn’t stay long. We headed back down, but this time chose to climb over Naka-dake. World famous and highly accomplished peak bagger Rob Woodall claimed it was not something he would risk soloing. I was able to free solo what I believe was a 5.6 granite summit block. There is minimal exposure but the climb does require some basic rock climbing technique. I did it in my TX4 approach shoes. Other options included an off-width and a crack. I even found a couple old pitons drilled into a face.
youtube
So now it is settled. Most likely everyone on the peak bagger app who logged a successful climb of this peak is a liar. Shame on them. After joining Leif and Asaka on a lower nearby summit, we continued back down to the hut/restaurant. Asaka, Jon and Leif would wait here while I attempt Hoken-dake, another bonus peak to our south.
Many reports online claim this as a difficult peak, but I found quite the opposite. I was literally able to jog almost the whole way to this peak. There was some scrambling near the top but it never exceeded easy class 3.
I didn’t stay long since I had a family waiting for me so I snapped a couple photos and resumed my jaunt back down the ridgeline.
I met the others inside the warm hut. They had ordered food and were ready to go. We hiked back down to the ropeway, getting back earlier than we expected. The hike was only 3.5 miles with all bonus peaks included.
We rode the gondola back down to the bus, then rode the bus back down to the parking lot.
We spent some time in the little village area looking around at the shops then continued on our way.
We then drove to a small village in the countryside where we spent the night at a very remote inn.

the 5 times jj fake proposed and the 1 time he did for real
warnings: cursing, mentions of sex
wordcount: 2.4k
_
the first time he fake-proposed, he was drunk. when he was drunk, jj felt like he needed to proclaim his feelings to the world. he was ultra-touchy with charlie and liked whispering sweet nothings in her ear, and then liked bragging about her to his friends just as much. they were at beta’s spring formal and they were both at the level of drunkenness (after way too many glasses of champagne) where everything was funny.
“I’m gonna marry you, charlie.” he promised, catching her lips in a sweet kiss. she laughed, pushing his shoulder. “you’re drunk, silly.” he dropped to one knee in the middle of the dance floor, wearing a goofy grin. “charlie walker, will you marry me?” she rolled her eyes and hauled him up by the arms before too many people could notice. “eventually.” he laughed and grabbed a slim napkin ring from the formal dinner table, slipping it on her finger. it was way too big and fell off almost right away, but she stuck it in her purse anyway.
the second time, jj had just won his intramural football championship (thanks to charlie’s coaching) and they were celebrating at the bar afterward. he was running high on emotions, had a streak of dirt on his face from a tackle and was a little bruised, but was having the time of his life. on his third trip back from the bar, he found a little silver ring on the ground and pocketed it. his arm was slung around charlie’s shoulders all night, and after the second round of playing thunderstruck, he felt compelled to propose. again.
“charlie, you know I love you, right?” she reached up and swiped her thumb across his cheek, grinning. “of course I do.” he got down on his knee and fished out the ring from his pocket, smirking up at her. the cocky smile was enough to tell her he wasn’t serious. “maybank -” she warned, but he shook his head to cut her off. “listen, listen! I want to spend the rest of my life with you -” one of his brothers nudged him, wary. “dude, are you really gonna propose like this?”
charlie laughed, crossing her arms as jj shoved him away. “let me finish, let me finish! will you marry me, charlie?” charlie just sent him an amused smile, shaking her head. jj stood quickly and grabbed her around the waist, swinging her around. “she said yes!” he yelled out, pressing a sloppy kiss to her cheek. she giggled as he slid the ring onto her thumb (the only finger that would fit). “I didn’t say anything!” he nudged his nose against hers, grinning. “shh, pretty girl, do you want free drinks or not?”
“I hate you.” she responded with a smile, blushing.
he nipped his teeth at her bottom lip. “come on, don’t talk like that to your fiancé.”
“oh my god.”
_
the third time, the two of them were surfing back in the outer banks. they were teasing each other all day, doing stupid shit like dropping in on each other’s wave and yelling flirty things when the other was riding a wave to catch them off balance. (jj even went as far to tackle charlie off her board in the still waters - just for fun.) after a few hours of surfing, they both laid on their backs on their boards out past the waves, arms draped over their eyes to shield them from the sun.
jj reached out and took her hand, floating her closer. “did you know otters hold hands when they sleep, so they don’t float away from each other?”
“really? that’s cute.” charlie mused with her eyes shut, about to fall asleep from the rocking of the waves.
“it’s adorable.” jj agreed. he pulled a piece of kelp from the water and stashed it in the pocket of his board shorts. “would you get married now?” charlie was way too used to his casual talk about the future by now, and didn’t even open her eyes. she squeezed his hand and smirked to herself. “depends, who’s asking?”
jj didn’t waste a beat to launch himself onto her board, promptly sinking the two of them. “charlie walker!”
she yelped, sputtering a little as she surfaced. “what was that for?!”
he splashed a little water toward her. “you know what that was for!”
she laughed, ducking away. “I couldn’t resist."
he rested his arms on her board as they treaded water and pulled the string of kelp out from his pocket. “I’m asking. would you marry me?” she eyed the kelp skeptically, then shot the look at him. “j. if that’s your idea of a proposal, you need to do better.” the tips of his ears turned red and he tossed it aside, putting on a smile. “I’m just kidding!” she gave him a short kiss, then nudged him off her board. “come on, one last wave. I’m tired.”
_
the fourth time, they were on the kiss cam at a south carolina football game. they were visiting for homecoming, one year after graduating, and he had been hinting at getting married more than his usual amount. just the week before, she almost had a heart attack when she found a small velvet box in his drawer, then realized it was just a pair of cufflinks she had given him before.
she wasn’t sure why she was so nervous about the idea of a proposal, exactly - she loved jj with her whole heart and couldn’t picture herself with anyone else, but the idea of such a big commitment was just...scary.
the kiss cam panned over toward them and she laughed before leaning over to catch his lips with hers - but he pulled away, getting on one knee. charlie stopped breathing. “jj.”
he grinned.
the stadium was dead silent.
charlie looked like she wanted to cry.
jj nudged her quickly, realizing he fucked up, and mouthed free drinks at her. she exhaled and nodded with a tiny smile and he got up quickly, hugging her tight so she didn’t break down and cry in front of the entire south carolina fanbase. the stadium erupted in cheers and the camera panned away as the game resumed.
he held her close for a long beat, wincing as she dug her nails into his arm. “I’m going to fucking kill you.” charlie murmured into his ear. he laughed weakly. “too far, huh?” she pulled away from the hug and pressed her hand over her heart, eyes bright and a little teary. he ran his hand through his hair, grimacing. “love you?” he tried.
she sat and pulled him down to sit with her, resting her head on his shoulder. “you need to knock it off.” he turned and kissed the top of her head, genuinely feeling bad. “I’m sorry, sweetheart, it was stupid.”
she pulled out her phone and showed him the numerous texts constantly lighting up her screen - especially the ones from her mom and dad. he gulped and charlie had to admit she felt a little satisfaction at him being uncomfortable too. “yeah, have fun explaining that one to my parents.”
jj had never been more thankful for a fluke south carolina win that day - he was pretty sure that was the only thing that got him out of the doghouse that weekend.
_
the fifth time, jj and charlie had just returned from a wine tasting tour on their anniversary and the sixth glass of rosé went straight to jj’s head. they were both handsy in the uber on the way home and barely made it through the doorway of their apartment before jj managed to pull charlie’s halter top off. he picked her up as she wrapped her legs around his waist. “can we at least make it to the bedroom?” she giggled as he peppered kisses all over her face.
he bit her bottom lip playfully and set her on the kitchen counter. “you’re lucky I didn’t take you right then and there at the last winery.”
“j.” she protested, running her hands through his hair. “bed.”
“patience, pretty girl.” he pulled back slightly to yank his shirt over his head and toss it aside, then resumed kissing her, hard. he trailed a hand up her side, brushing his thumb over her nipple and loving the way she arched her back into his touch. “fuck, j, come on.” she whined, tugging at the waistline of his pants. he swatted at her hand and picked her up again, nipping at her neck as he walked them into the bedroom.
afterward, he kissed her sweetly, pulling the sheet up over her chest. “happy anniversary, j.” she told him with a smile.
“I love you so damn much,” he replied with a grin.
jj rolled over and rummaged around the nightstand for a second, pulling out a black velvet box. charlie shook her head immediately, reaching over and grabbing his wrist. “jj, no.” he paused, glancing at her with a confused expression. “I’m not joking this time -” she shook her head again. “jj, please, not now.” she pleaded. "but I -” she kissed him quickly to shut him up and took the box from him, her heart racing.
“please.”
he sighed, resigned, and took the box back to shove it back in the nightstand. “it’s never gonna happen at this rate.” charlie frowned and kissed him soundly. “no, j, just...not like this. I’m ready. but not like this.” that was enough to turn his mood around. “you’re ready? you’re sure?” she smiled a little and nodded. “yes. I promise.”
_
the last time, they were at their favorite lookout spot in berkeley. they had shared a lot of big moments there (a job promotion, a raise, their first real discussion about future children) and he knew he had one chance to get the moment perfect - since he had fucked up the first five times. he did everything right - called her parents in advance (less for her dad’s blessing, more for the courtesy), told grace beforehand, and had scheduled a photographer to wait in the bushes for the exact moment.
he was acting strange all day, to the point that charlie thought he was even a little bit mad at her for something she did.
she should have caught on, given that he got her a gift card to get her nails done a week ago - and her nails were hardly ever polished. but she appreciated the random gesture and got them done anyway, kind of loving the look. she should have caught on when he told her to wear his favorite dress (“you know, the one with the little blue flowers”) for a picnic up on the hill.
lucky for jj, she was pretty much clueless and went along with it when he pulled on a short-sleeved button down and dress pants, saying he needed to ‘break them in’ - weird, but whatever.
he slipped the ring in his pocket without the box, afraid the outline would tip her off. as they drove up to their spot with a cooler he packed in the back, he tapped his thumb on the wheel anxiously. “rough day at work, hon?” charlie asked sympathetically. he shook his head. “nah, just...jittery. dunno, must have drank coffee too late at work or something.” she nodded and reached over, squeezing his thigh reassuringly. he flinched away, scared she was going to feel the ring and she furrowed her brow. “jj, what’s up?”
he laughed, a little high-pitched. “nothing! nothing, just the coffee.” he lied, horribly. “...right.” she replied, dubious. he pulled up to the lookout and grabbed the cooler and blanket from the backseat, stashing the champagne under the car seat before she could see. as they laid out the picnic items, his hands were shaking like hell. charlie took his hands in hers and stepped close, kissing him softly. “you sure it was just the coffee, jj?”
he took a deep breath, looking around at their surroundings to make sure everything was in order. “sorry, just - I think I forgot something in the car, I’ll be back.” he left her standing there, confused and jogged back to the car. he checked over his pockets for the twelfth time that day, making sure he had the ring, then walked back. she had walked further out to the lookout, a few steps away from the blanket, and he decided to make his move.
jj walked up behind her then dropped down to one knee, pulling the ring out of his pocket. “charlie -” he started, shaky, and she turned around and immediately slapped a hand over her mouth. “oh my god.”
“charlie walker, I -”
“you’re not joking, are you? please don’t say you’re joking.” tears were already welling up in her eyes and he grinned. “will you let me finish?”
she nodded, smiling ear-to-ear, a hand still pressed to her lips.
“charlie walker, the last three years loving you have been the best three years of my life and I can’t picture spending the rest of it with anyone but you.” he paused, blinking away what he swore wasn’t tears. “will you marry me?”
she practically tackled him to the ground in a hug, meeting his lips in a heated kiss.
he pulled back, laughing. “wait, wait, is that a yes?”
she nodded, grinning. “yes, god yes!”
he beamed, shifting her to his lap. “wait, you haven’t even seen the ring!” she laughed, kissing him again. “I don’t even care.” he took her hand and slid the ring on her finger, carefully. she gasped when she saw it, tears welling up again. “oh my god, j, it’s perfect.” he grinned. “yeah? I had a little help from your friends.”
she admired the ring, then gasped as she realized. “is this my grandmother’s?” he nodded with a proud smile. “she wanted you to have it, since you’re the only granddaughter. I got tipped off that you’d always loved it.” charlie’s bottom lip quivered and he laughed, pulling her into a kiss. “stop crying! this is supposed to be happy!”
she laughed. “I know, I know! I just...it’s all so perfect, jj. god, I love you.”
he grinned. “now you’re stuck with me forever, sweetheart.”
charlie beamed. “I can’t fucking wait.”

Part One Part Three Part Four
Shouto sat on the couch, gently rocking Kaito’s cradle as he attempted to put him to bed. A soft lullaby left his lips as he sang in an attempt to get Kaito to sleep so he could do something around the house.
You weren’t home at the moment; being that it was two weeks until you were expected to get back onto the field; you were spending the mass majority of your time training with friends and at the gym. Shouto honestly did not mind a single bit, as he was on paternity leave from his own agency, as he sat at home alone with Kaito. Midoriya and Uraraka have been over earlier and had helped to clean up the Todoroki’s slightly messy house as the new parents struggled to maintain their usual cleanliness with the baby now here.
Peering into the basket, Shouto was happy to see that Kaito was now knocked out. Standing up, Shouto made his way over to the kitchen to start preparing dinner for you and him. Being that you were working diligently and “Plus Ultra,” to get back onto the field, you had been following a really strict diet that had been personally created for your use. Today’s dinner outline was grilled lean lime chicken, a cup of vegetables, and a scoop of steamed rice. Normally the two of you cooked together, seeing that it was an enjoyable thing to do together, and was a nice way to end the day. But with these intense workouts that were making you come home exhausted, Shouto ensured having the meal ready when you stepped foot into the house.
As Shouto prepared the meal, his eyes fell onto a picture frame by the sink, and he smiled in memory. It was the same picture that Hagakure had sent through the chat, framed and placed in your house. When you had woken up and seen the picture, you had begged Shouto to get it in an actual frame, and Shouto who was whipped for you did just that.
Shouto smiled again as he remembered what it was like bringing Kaito back home the first night he was released from the hospital.
⋆✭⋆✭⋆✭⋆✭⋆
You were exhausted, to say the least. You had returned from the hospital in diapers because your uterus was still shedding its layers off and it just reminded you of a period but way worse. You watched as Shouto glanced at you through the rearview mirror, joy, and mirth in his eyes as you gently stroked your baby’s cheek.
You brushed the fiery red wisps of hair Kaito had into a similar fashion of Shouto’s high school haircut and smiled, by gene selection, you wished more than anything else that Kaito would resemble his father more than you. You wanted your son to be nearly identical to your husband.
“I’m going to put the bags in, wait for me to help you take out Kaito?” Shouto says as he pulled into the driveway of your house, but exits the car before you can disagree with him.
You watched in amusement and Shouto took in five huge bags with ease only to fumble with unlocking the door. You opened the car door, and unbuckled, groaning as you scooted out of the seat. Who knew post-pregnancy was almost as bad on the body as pregnancy?
Shouto’s hand appeared from nowhere as he steadied you to your feet and he studied your face as you winced, he kissed you softly, “Welcome home.”
You laugh as you can’t help but bring him down for another kiss, “It’s good to be back.”
Shouto grabs the car seat where Kaito is knocked out, and with a hand firmly pressed onto your lower back helps you into the house.
Shouto helps you onto the couch, and you sigh gratefully as he places the car seat next to you, and you take the initiative to get Kaito out. You snuggle your red-headed baby boy into your body as your husband walks around the house putting things away and preparing anything that hasn’t been finished three days ago.
“Shoucchan,” You call out as Shouto now only seems to be pacing, “I think you should take Kaito on a tour of the house.”
You watched as Shouto hesitated as he always did when you wanted him to grab Kaito, but nevertheless, you smiled warmly as Shouto walked over and took Kaito from you.
Thus your two boys embarked on a journey around the house. Shouto went to every room in the house, explaining what the room was, it’s purpose, and whether mama or papa designed it. “And we’re back to the living room,” Shouto whispers as baby Kaito opens his eyes, “It’s the room where mama relaxes the most, but we designed it together, shocking huh.”
Adjusting the support to Kaito’s head, Shouto can’t help but stare into his son's eyes that are identical to your own e/c and shape. Shouto can’t help but think that beyond anything, he wishes that Kaito will take on after you completely even if he inherited the Todoroki hair color. His thoughts were interrupted as he felt you press your body against his.
Shouto looks down at you, and you peer up at him lovingly, “I love you two, more than anything else in this world.” You whisper as the two of your lips are sealed together again. “Welcome home, baby Kaito.”
⋆✭⋆✭⋆⋆✭⋆✭⋆
Recalling the memory makes Shouto smile softly as he looks around at what he’s cooking. He puts lids over the pots and walks away from the stove for a second, that is until he hears Kaito’s screams of unhappiness from the living room. Checking the time, Shouto realizes that it’s time to feed Kaito and that you’ll be home in thirty minutes.
Grabbing on of the many milk bottles you had left in preparation for your son from the fridge, Shouto warmed it up in seconds with his quirk before heading over to Kaito. Picking up his squirming son, Shouto managed to put the bottle into his mouth and watched in amazement as his tiny son finished the bottle in mere seconds. “Well someone was hungry,” Shouto speaks as he wipes away the slobbered milk leftover of Kaito’s cheeks with a cloth.
Shouto cradles Kaito into his chest and holds him close just before he catches a whiff of Kaito’s foul-smelling diaper. Humming to distract himself from his natural instinct to gag, Shouto calmly stood up and walked over to the kitchen and left the stove on the lowest of settings, and switched the rice cooker to keep warm before heading over to the nursery.
As Shouto changed the gurgling baby, he caught the eye of the baby monitor and smiled as he remembered another memory with Kaito.
⋆✭⋆✭⋆⋆✭⋆✭⋆
Being a new mother had its plenty of perks, but by far the worst part of having a newborn was the fact that it cried through the night constantly. At only two weeks old, it was too early to force Kaito to sleep through the night, so despite the fact, you had accumulated a grand total of fifteen hours this past week, the sharp wails of Kaito had you shooting up from slumber.
You were so tired.
Since you normally slept entangled with Shouto, he was always awake when you went to calm down Kaito and always accompanied you to get your guy's son to calm down enough to sleep.
“It’s okay, sweetheart,” Shouto says as he pulls your body down back onto the bed, his own person getting out of bed, “I’ll get Kaito, sleep, you need to rest more especially since you’re starting training.”
Despite the fact you wanted to follow your husband to your son's room, you found you couldn’t move, so instead you grabbed your baby monitor and watched through the night vision camera as Shouto walked in, rubbing his eyes.
Kaito was screaming his head off, demanding attention as Shouto picked him out of the crib and held him closely. So you lay in bed, watching your husband gently rocking your son back and forward all while the monitor was picking up the conversation Shouto was having with Kaito which made your insides melt.
“You know Kaito-chan,” You heard Shouto whisper as the baby lay his head on Shouto’s shoulder, light whines leaving his mouth as he refused to sleep, “You’re being really mean to your mama. She’s really tired nowadays, and your drama queen actions keep her up.” You watch as Shouto places a few pats on Kaito’s butt who was loving the attention.
“The thing is,” Shouto continued at his normal whisper, “I love your mama more than anything in this world, and you of course, but your mama is my everything. I’m telling you this now so that in the future if you ever get mad at me for defending and siding with your stubborn mama, it isn’t because I don’t love you as much as her, but your mama means so so much to me. The both of you do... so come on Kaito-chan, let’s go to sleep now.”
You couldn’t resist wiping the tears that had fallen down your face after hearing your husbands loving words, you blamed the stupid hormones. You continued watching until Kaito had fallen back asleep and you quickly put the monitor down as you fell back onto the bed, pretending to be asleep.
Shouto crawled back into bed, wrapping you up in his arms, and you cracked shuffling around to see him staring at you with the warmest look. “Were you listening, stalker?” He asks you, knowing the answer.
“Just making sure you weren’t turning my baby boy against me.” You whisper back teasingly.
“Sorry, y/n, but we Todoroki men are total mama’s boys.”
The two of you laugh together quietly but you can’t resist it anymore as you plant your lips on his, feeling the most awake you’ve been these past few days as he kissed you back with the same vigor. You smiled into the kiss as Shouto’s hands guided you until you were straddling his lap.
“Are you trying to bed me weeks after I gave birth to your son?!” You asked with amusement in your eyes as you broke the kiss from his mouth, trailing kisses down Shouto’s neck, his head tilting to allow you more room.
“I can’t help it, I’m really into new mothers.” Shouto teases back as his hands roam your body before grasping your hips tightly, only to be interrupted by a sharp cry coming from Kaito’s room.
You groan slightly as you flop onto your back, “I think he doesn’t like me touching his mama.” Shouto states as you laugh before the two of you get up to get the crying baby.
⋆✭⋆✭⋆⋆✭⋆✭⋆
After finishing changing Kaito’s diaper, Shouto returned to the kitchen with the baby in arms.
“Chicken,” Shouto said as Kaito pointed out towards the cooking chicken. He pointed to the vegetables, “Vegetables.”
Kaito smiled a gummy smile and Shouto smiled back pressing a kiss on his son’s cheek. Shouto looked at his phone when a text message alarm went off and saw a text from you:
running late! sorry! I couldn’t find my water bottle for the life of me ((spoiler alert it was in my hand the entire time I searched for it)) on my way home! don’t miss me too much ;) love you!!
Shouto chuckled at the message, your entire pregnancy fog brain was apparently still in effect, but he did not dismay as he set up plates for dinner, putting on the portions you required and put tin foil on it before placing it in the oven to keep warm.
Glancing at Kaito who was now sleepily closing his eyes, Shouto adjusted his grip on his son, “Let’s go take a nap while we wait for mama to get home?”
When you got home, you greeted the quiet house with your now usual whisper; just in case Kaito was asleep. You saw that the living room was empty, as was the kitchen, and you frowned. Shouto was still home, right?
Placing your gym bag by the couch, you walked to the bedrooms and saw that Kaito’s room was empty. “Shoucchan?” You called out as you headed to your room.
You opened your room door and paused in the door frame as you saw Shouto and Kaito sleeping on the bed. Kaito was curled up into Shouto’s side, whereas Shouto had a heavy hand on Kaito’s body to keep him from moving accidentally. You pulled out your phone and took a picture of your sleeping boys.
Kaito then woke up, his bed head resembling fire lit upon his head and you picked up your son from his fathers grasp. “Did you keep papa busy today, Kaito-chan?” You whisper to Kaito who was snuggled into your neck. “You little brat!” You turn your back to Shouto as you sway slowly with Kaito in your arms.
Arms wrap around your waist and you look up to see Shouto burying his face into your free shoulder, and once more you feel content and safe as you meet each other for a kiss.
“Welcome home.” He whispers.
“I’m home.”
no bonus todaaaaay, sorry! but I hope you enjoyed this short scenario anyways! pregnancy, in theory, seems so nice, but I would literally burn the house down if I had a baby to take care of uwu but thats all for now folks :D
