I can't remember exactly where I saw it or even if it's true, but I've read somewhere that the Espera girls said they do not like being called "The Vesselettes" because it's demeaning, or something along those lines, yet you continue to refer to them as such. Why? Isn't that disrespectful? Please do not take this question as an attack on you by the way, I'm simply curious as to your reasons for it.

Hello Anon 🖤 Ty for the question, I'm happy to answer it, actually.

TLDR Answer #1: I'm too lazy to go back and change 100+ tags. TLDR Answer #2: I keep the #the vesselettes tag for visibility, especially for new or casual fans.

For a longwinded answer, Espera technically have three names: Espera, the official name for the background trio; The Choir, which encompasses their identities/part in Sleep Token; and The Vesselettes, which is a fandom created name given to the trio before they revealed their identities. I have actually called them Espera in the non-utility tags, and I've also thought about adding/editing the tags as well to include #espsera and/or omit #the vesselettes. It's just... a lot at this point 😅 Also in my mind Espera does not equal Sleep Token, but The Vesselettes and The Choir does equal Sleep Token.

As far as I know, and with a tiny bit of research, the girls in Espera didn't say they disliked being called The Vesslettes, only that they preferred to be called Espera. Granted this was in an Espera Q&A that was on the Espera Instagram page (hence why Espera does not equal Sleep Token in my mind). I wasn't present, and I haven't found a screen recording of the Q&A, but the consensus is that they didn't specifically state they disliked the term "Vesselettes" or found it offensive. The reasoning behind their preference is because they're a for-hire group and work with different artists outside of Sleep Token.

The its disrespectful point of view most likely came from fandom doing it's thing and expanding on what was said with their own feelings. There's been a lot of discourse I've seen on Reddit and in the band's Discord about the fan name. Its one of the things brand new fans or casual fans get jumped on for doing when there's actually nothing inherently wrong with what they've said. Case and point:

In addition to my extremely unnescessarily long-winded answer: the lady who claims to have coined the name "The Vesselettes" is actually a very lovely, fellow nerodivergent, woman. She's been using the name for over two years now, and (from what I can tell) it has picked up in popularity between fans. She never intended for this sort of discourse to happen; it was never disrespectful, demeaning, or sexist in any way.

Also if you want to get super ultra technical Vessel's name is not Vessel and he's literally the First Vessel of Sleep, or I, but fans kept referring to him as "Vessel" instead of "I" and it stuck and he rolled with it because early band lore was kind of a mess for reasons i probably cannot safely get into

ANYWAY if I have actually missed something, and Espera have publicly stated "Do not Call us the Vesselettes" or "We do not like the name Vesselettes," then please tell me and give me sources and I will force myself to correct all of the tags on my blog.

\long ass post about amber getting pranked and getting powers you were warned>

It was.. three, something AM. Amber, Buster- everyone, was asleep. Everything was peaceful- although. Something is.. odd. Because of that oddness, Milkyway slowly wakes up, yawning. A Jirachi waking up on it's own when it hasn't even been a thousand years would be a blessing, if it wasnt for Milkyway simply deciding to do that because it's already slept for three thousand years. It looked around, staring at Amber. She changed clothes, she must have woken up from her mini Phantumpa coma. Buster was protecting a small blanket-covered baby Mimikyu, and.. everything was, again, peaceful. Until Milkyway realized - something.. is written on their left tanzaku. They looked to it, yawning again and then gently plucking it off, a new one then appearing almost immediately with magic. It read the messy note - "tro ambr tru uldra zpece", it read. They attempted to make sense of it - Throw.. Amber.. through.. ultra.. space? They blinked, then smiling.

The Jirachinite Q on their back beginning to glow, along with their body. Amber, bothered by the glow, groaned, attempting to grab her glasses. Meanwhile that, Milkyway goes through an almost anime Magical Girl-esque transformation, their "wings" becoming longer, more akin to a scarf, the edges themselves like a Mimikyu's claws. Their "hair", becoming tad bits spikier, the triangles on the corners becoming bigger, and little blue spheres popping up on the tips of their, "hair". Their "bangs", becoming longer, thicker, blue hair bands wrapping around them, a purple gem appearing on their forehead, along with their eye markings forming stars, three triangles up and two down, like eyelashes. Their fingers, given a purple coloring, and the edge of their "sleeves" a yellow coloring, mixing with the galaxy patterns underneath. The star that rests at their chest, right above their chest's eye, gleaming brightly before disappearing as their chest's eye opened, the pupil being a bright, four-pointed star. Not that Amber saw anything, too damn bright. But the second she did look at them, their gleaming eyes, she took a quick second to process it. The light from the mega evolution faded away but they still gleamed, even if faintly. Before she could even speak, they grabbed onto her by the shirt's collar and then lifted her up, causing her to yelp and then teleported away.

She looked around - this was right about outside Mount Lanakila. "a" she said, before she heard a loud, terrifying noise. She looked behind her and would you look at that! Milkyway had just opened a Ultra Wormhole. She inhaled sharply before getting flinged into it by them, which they then followed behind, laughing as she screamed before falling onto a large wasteland, whining from how hard she hit the ground, before she forgot about her pain by paying attention to the loud, menacing footsteps approaching. She looked up in front of her, and oh, what a lovely Guzzlord! She inhaled sharply and just as it started roaring she began to scream, darting away as fast and far as she could. Thoughts raced through her mind - WHY would Milkyway do this?! But they were all cut short when she heard the beast yell out in agony. She looked back to the Guzzlord, then seeing a brightly lit Moonblast be shot at it, by.. Milkyway? 'THEY HAVE MOVES??' She thought, calmly. But then, after defeating the Guzzlord, Milkyway immediately looked to her, then dashing at her and picking her up, opening another Ultra Wormhole (the one they'd opened to get here was closed shortly after Amber arrived) and flinging her into it.

She tried to scream, but then landed on something-.. rough? Was it rock? Cobblestone? She felt around for a few quick seconds before realizing that no, it's neither, and it's moving! It's a Stakataka, and it's furiously trying to shake Amber off, to which it's replied with desperate screaming trying to cling onto it. It manages to successfully shake Amber off, seemingly to her death, probably, but then Milkyway, of course picked her up again, giggling. She was going to yell, before another Ultra Wormhole was going to open, the crack right there, their chest eye gleaming as they focused on it for a second, but the Stakataka then immediately attacked Milkyway, detecting a threat. Because of it's lack of focus, the Ultra Wormhole opened seemed kind of.. iffy, but looking at it, it was all they had, so in Amber went.

She landed on a rough, stoney kind of.. place. More like a cave. She groaned, shaking her head then getting up. Her PJs are all dirty now, but she's kind of only focused on surviving at this point. This place.. it was SO very dark, but.. she sighed, as her only option was to just try and get around. It didn't seem like any ultra beats were around, so she felt.. safe, here. As her eyes got adjusted to the location, she looked at a path in front of her. With no option, as the other path behind her seemed very well closed off from the outside, she walked forwards. This place.. it was creepy, and she'd just now noticed.. it seems there were people here. There are engravings on the floors, the walls, the ceilings.

She gulped, before she felt.. something. As if it was calling to her. She blinked, before she looked forward - it seemed to be coming exactly from that path. She sighed, stepping forward again, with little self regard, until she reached.. somewhere. It was like a small altar, ring engravings on the ancient stone, a halfway destroyed circle centered on the altar. In the middle of that circle, was a ring- more alike to a bracelet, but still. It was spinning - almost orbiting - around.. something. A small, tiny little star-shaped.. thing. It looks like a comet piece, but Amber can barely tell from how it glows brightly. She, as the dumbass she is, stepped forward, but the second she stepped foot onto that altar, the markings all over it, ancient runes, light up. Amber, noticing the sudden bright lights, panics, but not before she looks to the ring, watching it stop. She looked to the star, and it shot off at her, sticking itself to her chest, right above her heart, almost stabbing into it, cutting through the clothes. The groaned, in agony, as she fell to the ground. This wouldn't cause any harm in the long run, but DAMN it hurt. She looked up to the ring, only to see that it'd faded away, which she then felt.. something, on her arm. She looked to her wrist, then seeing the bracelet-like ring there. She blinked, confused, then looking to her other arm, seeing it there as well. Just now, it seemed this place was actually getting a lot clearer for her to see, but not before she felt as though all of her energy had faded away, and she just.. passed out.

She woke up in a jolt, looking around quickly. The place was very dimly lit, or so it seemed. Was it all.. a dream?.. one of those again?.. She looked down a little, and low and behold, there's Milkyway. Of fucking course. Every once in a while, they'd give her a particularly.. fun, dream, but none to this extent. She sighs, then mumbling "What am I going to do with you?.." and then gently pets them on the head.

Oh.

The ring's still there.

Chatted with the Ultra Q boys for a second time to talk about their new album, evolution of the band, and finding their voice. 

IE: Last time we spoke, you mentioned having a file with lots of songs in it. So, when it came time for the album, how did you decide which songs make the final cut?

JA: I’m constantly making demos and recordings and songs. I’m always making stuff. I think there was a very real, I dunno if [Kevin] feels the same way about this, but there was a very clear switch when it went from, I was writing stuff to write to we’re writing stuff for this album. The first demo I made was “Wrip,” and I showed it to Kevin –

KJ: And I was like, huh?

JA: And that was a very clear switch of having a different style than before, a different sound, aesthetic.

KJ: It’s gonna feel very different. But also, I feel like we, [Jakob] especially, are kind of always thinking about our current roster of songs in terms of tracklists and what songs we like together. I feel like [Jakob’s] always making new folders of, oh, look at these set of songs together. So, we’re always thinking in that way. Just in general, not even necessarily in terms of a project in the future we’re already thinking about. Just like, these are the songs that have been written, and they sound cool together.

Interview: Bad Nerves, "Still Nervous"

Back in November, Bad Nerves were back in Switzerland for a couple shows in the Swiss-german part, in Aarau and Winterthur. The great Ultra Q from California were touring with them, and a lot of audience members came for both bands.

That night in Aarau however, it was snowing a lot. Road traffic was frozen in place, and I was late for our interview before the show because of delayed trains. It made the show somehow unforgettable. The band was very understanding. I met with Bobby and Jon backstage for a quick chat about their Twitch channel and their new record Still Nervous.

I wanted to talk about your Twitch channel, Bobby. You already wrote the fans regularly through a newsletter before that, and now, you are also streaming live on Twitch from time to time.

Bobby: Yeah, to have something to do while we are touring (laughs). It’s nice to share new music we’ve found, bands that we’ve played with. And just to talk with fans of the band – the thing is, you don’t really get to actually connect with things like Instagram and other social media, whereas when you are on live stream, you can talk directly to people. It’s a little more engaging. It’s quite fun. My biggest inspiration for doing it is the radio. When I was younger, I always liked the idea of playing music and doing the radio thing. This just seemed like a good way of combining the two.

Are the fans on Twitch a little younger?

Bobby: It’s half-half.

Jon: I have noticed a lot of older people didn’t know what Twitch was, but they joined up on Twitch just because Bobby was doing a Twitch stream.

Bobby: It’s funny, because people message me saying 'I’ve never used this platforms before, I’m only on here because of the band.' It’s a fun medium. I like the idea of trying to embrace different things, because my instinct was never to do live streams. I just wanted to be in a band. Ultimately, because you are communicating with fans and it’s more engaging, it’s more fun. I am glad I started it.

Could we talk about Still Nervous? I was wondering about the story was behind the cover photo, because I find it legendary. It reminds me of old school rock albums.

Bobby: That’s what we wanted to do, like The Damned or The Stooges.

Jon: Yeah, all the classic albums had the band on the front. We did a photoshoot with Ryan Jay in New York, and we got a bunch of photos back. He absolutely crushed it. And there was that one photo we saw, and we were like ‘you know what. That one looks like an album cover.’ There was a little bit of resistance towards it coming from outside sources, people saying we need to put a fucking goat on it or something.

Bobby: They said it was not modern.

Jon: And we said, ‘you know what? Fuck off, we like this, and it’s so rare we all agree on something. This is perfect’.

Bobby: I can’t think of any current band – putting the band on the front doesn’t really happen that much anymore. I am quite glad we did that, because it’s a throwback to the records we really love.

Jon: It was the whole point of it. We wanted it to feel like a classic album. Hopefully it will be.

I also wanted to talk about the song You’ve Got The Nerve, because I feel like it could be your theme song! Like for the band the Monkees for example.

Bobby: That song has taken a life of its own! I think people appreciate the message in it, which is basically ‘you’ve got the nerve to do what you want to do’. It resonates with a lot of people, because that’s what we’re doing. We’re just saying ‘fuck you’ to everything else.

Jon: It’s my mom’s favorite song!

Bobby: Really? Bless her (laughs). There is a line in it which says ‘you better pack your job and fast, unless you’re never gonna grow’, which I found so true in my life. There was a time where I was working in a place and I quit when I was quite comfortable, I didn’t need to. It was terrifying, but my life took a whole other direction for the better when I did that.

When I saw you guys touring in that huge bus with Nothing but Thieves back in Zurich, I wanted to cry. I remembered your gig at the small pub The Old Blue Last in London -

Bobby: God, that was years ago! Isn’t that when we first met?

I think so!

Jon: Yes. I remember.

Bobby: I hate playing that place (laughs).

The sound wasn’t really good, wasn’t it?

Jon: And the load-in was horrible.

Bobby: It’s just too small.

Jon: Downstairs, there’s just a collection of office workers that just wanna get pissed.

This is my final question: while we are doing this interview before your show, the city of Aarau is currently covered in snow. Are you guys more of a ski, sledge or snowboard people?

Bobby: I am actually more of a sledger. I went skiing once, and I’ve never been snowboarding. Outside of my family home is a hill. We would always sledge down it, and it was fucking awesome.

Jon: I used to snowboard every year. I skated as well, but I broke my foot and fractured my ankle. After that, I got a bit weirded out strapping my feet into boards. And it’s also very expensive to do it a lot.
