Survival Uses of Chewing Gum:
Go into any grocery store, gas station, convenience store and youâre going to find packs and packs of chewing gum. What used to be considered a candy, has now become a health food (of sorts) as gum makers have moved to create gum thatâs healthy for your teeth, wonât cause health issues and may be made to address a specific benefit like staying awake (caffeinated). While chewing gum isnât on the same level as a water filter or a camping stove, youâll find that keeping some of this stored in your survival kit or bug out bag is a worthwhile addition. How can Chewing Gum Help You Survive?
Scientifically proven to alleviate anxiety and stress, lowering Cortisol.
Fights fatigue and improve mental alertness.
Enhances working memory and brain performance.
Improves concentration.
Boosts morale and energy.
Aids digestion by increasing the salivary flow.
Quenches thirst and prevents "dry mouth" by stimulating saliva.
Suppresses an appetite to lose weight or when eating is not convenient.
A sticky substance to bind things together and fill gaps.
Fishing lure.
Fishing bobber/float (Survivorman, Georgia Swamp, S1E4).
Bartering tool.
Promotes oral health by breaking down food particles brushing can't reach
Prevents watering eyes while slicing onions.
A fine addition as composting material.
Freshens Breath.
Combats acid reflux, nausea and dizziness.
Curbs addictions (like smoking and eating)
Start a Fire with Foil Gum Wrapper and Battery
Removes "Earworms" (a song or thought stuck in your head).
Chewing Gum Removal: During a visit from a very prankish young friend of mine, I fed him lunch on an unfinished wooden tray so he could eat while watching TV. He was chewing gum before I fed him and he removed the gum from his mouth and placed it on the edge of the glass plate of food. I thought that was very responsible of him. After he was finished eating, he placed the tray and plate on my kitchen counter. When he left my house, I began cleaning up after him and when I "tried" to move the tray, it was stuck to my kitchen counter with the wad of gum he had, formerly, placed on the plate. Fortunately, the gum was easy to remove from the kitchen counter but not the wooden tray. From previous chewing gum encounters, I knew that freezing gum helps remove it so I put the tray into my freezer for about an hour and was able to remove most of the giant wad but not all; a thin layer remained. So I went on the web to search for removal solutions. My solution was to use several strips of Duct Tape (sticky side), rubbed over the gum residue, to pull up much of it then Acetone to remove the rest. There is a chewing gum ban at my house for this young man.

Why Ultimate Note worked while Reboot did not
(In terms of directing)
When it comes to filmmaking, the director is responsible for instructing the actors on their roles.
Reboot version of Zhang Qiling had a lot of problems in terms of characterization and acting, so I did some research on finding out the reasons instead of entirely blaming the actor. After all, there are so many factors that could influence an actorâs performance when it comes to filmmaking.Â
While I was watching the behind the scenes for both dramas, I noticed one bts of Reboot where the director was telling Huang Junjie (ZQLâs actor) what he's going to do. âŹď¸
Directly translating his words, he basically told him to âpretend youâre a buddha statue (the word ĺ° is usually used to describe statues)â, and I suppose the actor took it as that he will show little to no reaction in the scene. Â
Which resulted in scenes like this:
Iâm not sure if this is how the actor usually stands but,Â
Heâs just so... awkward? Almost like when sims are not given an instruction.
Same problem with the part where ZQL is catching WX as he fell unconscious in the rain. The scene didnât make a lot of sense. Everyone else in the scene are standing closer to WX than ZQL is. But somehow, ZQL is the one who sprinted 20 yards and caught WX in his arms. Nobody else is doing anything in that scene because apparently âthey are not the center of attentionâ.
From an interview, I also found out that
the director did not read the novel
like, at all
His reasons being him wanting to create something unique without being influenced by the book.Â
This is pretty questionable especially considering that, you know, this is a novel-adapted drama?Â
I wonât be surprised if the director had no deeper understanding of Zhang Qilingâs character other than âthe cold and emotionless one that can defeat all monstersâ.
And now letâs take a look at Ultimate Note
This scene caught my attention, because it surprisingly, just makes sense.
This took place after ZQL finished rummaging through the corpse of the giant snake. Remember, in the previous scene, he cut open his palm to let out some blood so WX wonât get bit by the bugs again.Â
And here we see him taking out a med kit:
Like yeah, he has an injury, therefore heâs gonna treat it, right?
But these kinds of details seem to be forgotten a lot of times, and particularly for characters like ZQL.
Even the author seems to forget that, although ZQL is all-powerful and has special blood, his injuries heal slower than regular people.
ZQL is not invincible, he has weaknesses too.
As for directors, I know thereâs three directors in Ultimate Note. Iâm gonna give my overall impression because sometimes I canât tell whoâs who.Â
My impression was that they are very detail-oriented, which resulted in the actors also being detail-oriented: Pangziâs actor remembers how a chair is placed in the room, and even corrects ZQLâs actorâs pose. Xiaohua asks if they are gonna leave the bags in the desert because they are in a situation of survival. Hei Xiazi remembers which scenes heâs supposed to wear gloves.Â
Before filming, the cast and crew met together to discuss the script in detail, organizing the timeline, discussing character motivations, etc.âŹ
With that many people paying attention to the details, of course theyâre able to include that into the final product.Â
Now comparing that to Rebootâs director, who just feeds simple directions to the actors and when it comes to things he doesnât know, he just lets the actors do whatever they want. (This led to the scene where Pangzi joked that Xiaoge is getting free food from dating aunties, they said the scene was completely improvised by the two actors...)
Their process was: âwe got this plot point, letâs create this scene as it is written on the script. Whatâs not on the script gets ignoredâ
While Ultimate Note not only plays out the scene, but also considers what happened before the scene, what each characters are thinking, what their motivations are, and what led them there.
Each character is treated as an individual and thinks as an individual
As opposed to Main Characters vs. Side Characters.Â

Survival Clothing What to Wear:
It would be great to know where we will be and what the temperature will be like when the SHTF. But that ain't a gonna happen and you can't carry everything for every little situation. Here are some things to consider as a general rule for the unexpected and the planned outing:
Wool vs Cotton: Wool is best for cold weather while cotton is best for warmer weather. Wool is a powerful insulator. In fact, it's the second-best natural insulator next to goose down. It also repels water and wicks moisture. The lanolin, with its antibacterial, antimicrobial and water repellant properties, can irritate skin and can't be removed simply through washing. It's more durable and more wrinkle-resistant than cotton and it hardly retains odors and stains. Cotton, on the other hand, is a warm-weather fabric. Like wool, cotton has moisture-wicking properties. But the difference between wool vs. cotton is that cotton is a light, breathable fabric that helps you stay cool in the summer. It also provides excellent protection against the ultraviolet rays of the sun. It's hypoallergenic, easy to care for, and affordable.
Survival Clothing Principles:
Your body helps regulate body temperature. Clothing should work WITH your body. Exercise can help keep you warm in the winter and hydration (water intake) will help keep you cool in the summer.
Bulky or tight clothing is bad for survival. Synthetic [lighter/thinner] "fabrics" may be better options.
What you have with you when SHTF will be your survival clothes. Keep your "survival" clothing near you at all times (in a bug-out bag that is WITH YOU).
Dress for the function, not the fashion/form; the proper clothing for the situation.
Dress to blend in with the environment (gray man).

A List for Bliss: The Ultimate Camping Check-List to Make Your Next Adventure Extraordinary

We all know how to camp. You find the perfect location. Set up the tent. Gather wood and start a fireâŚyadda yadda yadda. There is no need to explain how, camping exercises our most fundamental human skill â survival. No, itâs now how, but rather what.
Iâm sure we all have our fair share of bad camping stories which famously feature a forgotten, essential piece of equipment. Packing for camping can be a daunting, strenuous task. When the time comes to when all your hard work pays off, and suddenly doesnât, a feeling of defeat is soon to follow.
Thankfully, the camping experts over at REI are here to help. They came up with a camping packing list, so that your next trip is everything you dreamed it would. Yes, you still must pack your own bag, but this list will make your life much easier during the process! Note: this list is comprehensive, take what suits your needs.
Around the Camp
Air Mattress or Sleeping Mat â If sleeping on the cold, hard ground is your thing, ignore this item. But for those who are seeking the comfort of home out in the outdoors, an air mattress or sleeping mat is the way to go. Donât forget the air mattress pump if you choose to go that route!
Backpack â Some prefer staying at the camp site. Some would rather venture away. If the second option is your pleasing, donât forget a backpack. Besides from carrying the necessities like food and water, tie on a Bluetooth speaker to enjoy your favorites songs on the trail.
Bikes â You know whatâs better than hiking a trail? Biking it. However, many bikes will not be able to handle the terrain of the trail â so leave the BMX at home. Instead, go with any standard mountain bike and go claim your track!
Binoculars â Hearing birdsong is undoubtedly very pleasing for the ears. Seeing the bird making the beautiful song is most times just as pleasing for eyes. At the same time, birds are shifty creatures making them hard to spot with the naked idea as are most wild animals. Donât miss your chance to view the majestic wildlife, bring binocs!
Canoe or Kayak â It is important to remember; the land is not the limit. Equipping a canoe or kayak while on the trip opens a whole new world of adventure, unreachable to those who tread by foot.
Fishing Gear â Find some alone time in nature or bond with a close one through the relaxation of fishing. You know what they say, a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work. Pack the tackle for a relaxing get-away from the site.
Flashlights or Lanterns â Donât be left in the dark. You never know when that mid-night restroom break will strike and we all know how unforgiving the forest floor can be. Or more desirably, use the light to channel the ultimate mood lighting around the camp site.
Folding Chairs â Wood stump, folding chair, whatâs the difference? For experienced campers, the difference is clear after spending a few hours around the fire. Camping is not meant to be uncomfortable. Lounge and be happy.
Multi-toolâ Ditch the knife. Ditch the plyers. Basically, just save time and pack a multi-tool. When miles away from civilization, it is imperative that you have tools at hand that can solve the variety of problems mother nature may present. The multi-tool is the ultimate problem-solver, all in the ease of the pocket.
Kitchen Supplies and Food â Of course food! And of course, food requires kitchen supplies. But have you remembered the roasting sticks for a quick afternoon hot dog or the ice cooler for a refreshing beer to wash it all down? There are several easy options for camp food, just be sure to prepared with the supplies to cook it!
Sleeping Bags â Probably one of the first items that come to mind when packing. However, it is an item that is very easy to look, whoâs absence could ruin the whole camping trip. To avoid leaving them behind, throw the rolls in first!
Tent â Another item so obvious to pack that it is sometimes overlooked. Without a tent there is no camp â unless your name is Bear Grylls. When arriving to the camp site, setting up the tent is usually a good first course of action. A tent can be hard to set up, especially after a few beers.
Clothing and Footwear
Hats â Itâs a hat. It will block the sun out of your eyes. Most importantly, however, it will keep the wood and deer ticks, which carry lymes disease, at bay and out of your hair. Plus, youâll look like a true camper.
Hiking Boots â Sandals are great for the campsite or the beach but not ideal for the trail. Being fitted in a quality pair of hiking boots will allow for steeper hikes, with less struggle.
Long-Sleeves and Pants â At camp, 90-degree days spent in long sleeves and pants are sometimes comfier than in short sleeves and shorts. Swarms of mosquitos have been known to turn even the biggest camping enthusiast mad. Sometimes you just must sweat it out!
Rainwear â The weather doesnât always pan out to how we want it to be. Sometimes this realization comes minutes before the rain comes down. When the clouds are questionable, have the rain gear handy.
Swimsuit â Sometimes camping doesnât involve water, but when it does, be sure to have a swimsuit packed. If I said days spent out on the water were more fun than in the water, itâd be a lie.
Towels â Something we often take for granted, but when without, the experience can be very uncomfortable. You never really realize how miserable you can be until you canât get dry. Plus, laying on sand or soil is not too comfortable either.
Personal Items
First-aid Kit â âRoughing itâ doesnât mean to be unsafe. When truly in rough areas, it important to have some form of first-aid. The outdoors is no stranger to danger. Make sure your camping party has the supplies to treat any health concerns.
Bug Spray â Reduce the bug bites. Reduce the curse words. Itâs not the greatest smelling stuff, but hey, itâll keep you from scratching. Still canât get over the smell? Try effective natural ingredients such as vanilla.
Soap â âRoughing itâ also does not mean to be unclean. Even if you donât have access to a shower, a body of water serves as a nice, natural bath. Hygiene doesnât stop at the house and it certainly isnât impossible in the outdoors.
Sunglasses â Not only that youâll look that much cooler, but it will save your eyes a great deal of stress. It is always a good rule of thumb to bring a cheap pair, you never know where they could end up!
Sunscreen â Thereâs nothing like trying to sleep inside of a hot tent while sporting a sunburn. Seriously, thereâs nothing like it, or anything much worse. Even on cloudy days, make sure you layer on the SPF.
Toilet Paper â It need not be explained.
Toothbrush and Tooth Paste â Lastly, make sure you brush twice a day per usual and donât forget the toothpaste! Nothing like taking on the woods with a breath of fresh air.
