“Project Waterfall” and the UK coffee week
Annually there is the UK Coffee Week, a fundraising campaign all over the country in thousands of coffee shops and restaurants. Of all the donations that are generated during the UK Coffee Week 100% goes to “Project Waterfall”, a project that is focused on getting coffee growing communities clean water facilities.

Shell Powers Coffee Fuel Test For London Buses With Bio-bean
Bio-bean, a U.K. startup, is powering a handful of London buses with biofuel created by blending diesel with oil extracted from coffee waste. And in a sign of the times, Royal Dutch Shell is working with Bio-bean and promoting the initiative via its #makethefuture platform, with Argent Energy (the UK’s “foremost premium biodiesel producer) as a third partner.
youtube
As Shell states, “In the UK we are working with bio-bean, a company dedicated to recycling coffee waste from across the UK into carbon-neutral biomass products. The company collects and processes 50,000 tonnes of waste grounds a year, saving 6.8 tonnes of CO2 emissions for every tonne re-cycled. We are collaborating with bio-bean on a project to help turn coffee waste collected from factories, coffee shops and offices into a sustainable transport fuel.”
+ ☕ = . But what if bright ideas and coffee waste could also help power buses ? #makethefuture http://pic.twitter.com/wpSdn01XNz
— Shell (@Shell) November 29, 2017
Shell’s bigger goal, beyond innovation, is sustainability—“to meet the energy needs of society in ways that are economically, socially and environmentally viable, now and in the future. We believe that oil and gas will remain a vital part of the global energy mix for many decades to come. Our role is to ensure that we extract and deliver these energy resources profitably and in environmentally and socially responsible ways.”
According to Bio-bean, it takes just over 2.55 million cups of coffee to create enough biofuel to run one London bus for a year with the hybrid coffee oil. To date it has produced 6,000 litres of coffee oil, enough coffee oil to power one bus for a year.
From today, some of London’s buses will be #poweredbycoffee. We teamed up with Shell’s #makethefuture team and Argent Energy to create a biofuel made partly from coffee oil. Biofuels are a smart use of waste and reduce CO2 emissions – and could provide a way to power our cities cleanly in the future. . . . #makethefuture #coffee #wonderfuel #biobean #london

Transport for London, which operates London’s transit system, is open to using biofuels to reduce transport emissions and is already using waste products such as cooking oil and tallow from meat processing in biofuels in many of the capital’s 9,500 buses.

— The UK's Department for International Trade in USA (@tradegovukUSA) November 27, 2017
It’s fortunate, then, that Londoners create 200,000 tons of coffee waste annually, and bio-beans is the first coffee-derived biofuel to be trialed in London’s public transport system.
We tweeted about this last week, but here's another look at London buses powered by coffee! The guys at @bio_bean_UK are teaming up with @Shell to power London buses with used coffee grounds from #UKCoffeeWeek supporters @CostaCoffee, #CaffeNero and more!https://t.co/fIHHr5L1Bq
— UK Coffee Week (@UKCoffeeWeek) November 29, 2017
Bio-bean uses grounds from coffee shops and instant coffee factories, extracts the oil and processes a blended B20 biofuel. The product can be used in current buses without need for alterations. The startup came up with the ingenious coffee log as an alternative fuel source.
UK-based startup bio-bean converts coffee dregs to biofuel- and they might just power London's buses! #makethefuture #London #fuel #biofuel #energy #coffee #wastehttps://t.co/ZEknD4ep8Y http://pic.twitter.com/mGiOx1988j
— Logistics News ME (@Logisticsnewsme) November 20, 2017
“It’s a great example of what can be done when we start to reimagine waste as an untapped resource,” Bio-bean founder Arthur Kay told the BBC.
"We plan to step up our activities in new energies and set our ambition to cut the net carbon footprint of our energy products by half by 2050, in step with society’s drive to align with the #ParisAgreement goals." Shell CEO Ben van Beurden https://t.co/NTKyVqzhEp http://pic.twitter.com/cTAnq19whO
— Shell (@Shell) November 28, 2017
It’s that inspiration that inspired Shell, which highlighted its Bio-bean partnership at its 2017 Management Day on November 28th, where Shell CEO Ben van Beurden updated analysts and investors on the company’s commitment to reduce the net carbon footprint of its energy products:
“Shell aims to cut the net carbon footprint of its energy products – expressed in grams of CO2 per megajoule consumed – by around half by 2050. As an interim step, by 2035, we aim to reduce it by around 20%. We will do this in step with society’s drive to align with the Paris goals, and we will do it by reducing the net carbon footprint of the full range of Shell emissions, from our operations and from the consumption of our products.”
Van Beurden added, “Tackling climate change is a cross-generational, global and multi-faceted effort. This is a challenge for the whole planet, for all of society, for customers, for governments and indeed for businesses. It will mean meeting increasing energy demand with an ever-lower carbon footprint. And it is critical that our ambition covers the full energy lifecycle from production to consumption. We are committed to play our part.’’
It’s been an amazing day on London’s South Bank! We’ve been speaking to media around the world about our project with @shell’s #makethefuture team and Argent Energy. Today, coffee-derived biofuel is in the tanks of buses in London for the first time! . . . #makethefuture #coffeelogs #biobean #coffee #fuel #london
