ofc im celebrating that the Tories are out but seeing just how much some people are specifically celebrating a labour government is a bit of a red flag. Like. Are yall ready to hold these people to account??
They're not addressing the ongoing, mass disabling pandemic; they don't support palestine; they're coming for trans rights and they're in favour of NHS privatisation.
Yall have got to be ready to criticise, protest and push, not just be placated by them not being Tories by name.

The UK sucks for trans people at the moment 😔
So, I'm considering whether or not to vote Labour in this general election (4th July), and here's what I've got so far.
Today Labour said that they wouldn't undo the Westminster veto over Scotland's change to its gender recognition law (👎).
In their manifesto, trans rights come up on page 89. Basically, they say they will do a trans-inclusive conversion therapy ban (👍). They also say they will improve the gender recognition process in vaaaague ways, while retaining the requirement for a gender dysphoria diagnosis (👎). That's all.
The Conservative manifesto doesn't mention trans people at all, which makes it really hard to make a decision. Obviously out of the two I would rather go for Labour, but I just hate to make decisions when I don't have all the information.
So if Labour are just like, "we won't make things worse and we might make things a little bit better"... I guess I'll have to go for that? In my area there's no one else who has any chance of winning. :( I hate it.

welcome to the UK, where world leading healthcare is free at the point of use! hopefully you don't need it though. underfunding and shitty management of the public health sector by non clinicians mean you could wait up to six months for an urgent referral. hope all your organs are in good working order because you could die waiting if they're not :) and god forbid you should need to see a GP or a practice nurse for something more minor - the demand highly outweighs the supply and you'll be engaging in the hunger games to maybe get a 10 minute telephone appointment in September 2026 :) mental health suffering? well you are shit out of luck my friend - again, demand far outweighs supply - everything has been cut down to less than the absolute bare minimum - and the criteria for services is sky high now. make a cup of tea and take the crisis line number. you'll be fine right?
welcome to the UK, one of the richest economies in the world! how is it then that living standards are as low as they were in the 1970s, what with the old cossie lives and wages that were already laughably meagre now completely out of sync with how fucking expensive everything is?? i know you worked hard to get your education and onto your graduate scheme and did everything society asked of you to make it in life, but things are different now so here's your mouldy room in a shared house where the rent is a million pounds a month and lol what disposable income aren't you just happy to have a roof of your head?? stop going to Costa every morning for your soy triple shot vanilla latte you entitled little shit! it's not like we've had 14 years of complete mismanagement of the economy or anything! ps. aren't you so tired of hearing that it's all your fault?
welcome to the UK, where we have a welfare system designed to help people.in need, I.e. those out of work and those too sick to work! but good luck accessing that too. and if you want to try - LMFAO! oh honey no one LIKES working. but all this pretending to be too unwell to work ain't fooling anyone! come on mate drop that defeatist attitude and get on indeed.com. none of your conditions are even real. stop using your multiple sclerosis/depression/long covid/terminal cancer as an excuse. fucking sickness culture in this country. the high rates of mental illness especially have no obvious cause at all do they?
welcome to the UK, a tiny country that prides itself on tolerance and has historically seen great benefits to the economy and culturally from immigration! but god forbid we make this an easy place to live for trans people! this Woke has gone too far! and oh my GOD aren't all these refugees SO annoying?! they clearly just want to come here for the free healthcare (you know that non existent thing) and to get welfare benefits (you know asylum seekers aren't entitled to benefits apart from a pittance allowance from the home office right?) and they're absolutely not braving a life threatening journey to escape horrific conditions and persecution in their own country. but whatever. not our problem. off to Rwanda with you. human rights are stupid lmao. empathy? compassion? never heard of her.
welcome to the UK, where we support genocide and saying certain things in opposition of it is actually fucking illegal. i wish i was kidding.
welcome to the UK, where nothing works and everyone is sad.
welcome to the UK. god i fucking hate it here.
british tumblr - even if you don't think it will make a difference, even if you recognise there is just a lesser of two evils here, even if you don't trust any of them, even if you're fucked off and burnt out, i am BEGGING you to vote to get these absolute cretins out of power. we cannot have another five years under tory rule. there will be nothing left.

My only hope right now is that today is the last day of this Tory government. It's likely we'll end up with a Labour government (which is only a stones throw better tbh, in an ideal world, it'd be a Lib Dem/Greens coalition) but good god, as long as the Conservatives go - and maybe take Reform with them - I'll settle for Starmer.

UK politics talk under the cut
So last week, unless you have been keeping a close eye on this sad little island of mine for the past month, the labour party won a massive majority in parliament for the first time in over 20 years, albeit on a pathetically small 34% vote share (cheers FPTP system).
Tumblr media
The big story behind this election however, is not centrist labour winning a "landslide" built on sand, or far-right snake-oil-salesman nigel farage's """party""" getting 5 seats, due in large part to getting large sums of money from fossil fuel donors to spend on astroturfing social media with botfarms, and almost daily coverage in MSM. No.
The real big story is, not only the centre-left Libdems winning way more seats for the first time in a decade (72), but the smaller left-leaning challengers, including but not limited to, Plaid Cymru and Green Party of England & Wales managing to make record breaking history by each winning 4 seats! The Green Party especially in particular came 2nd place to labour in 47 other seats!
Meanwhile 5 out of the 6 independent candidates that won, ran on a pro-Palestine platform.
All this, on top of the fact the Libdems, The Scottish National Party, and the rest of the smaller leftwing parties, all in favor of a ceasefire in gaza, including 50 returning labour MPs who who voted in favor of one last year, means that the House of Commons has a pretty hefty block of about roughly 154 MPs (yes, I did the math) who outnumber nobhead frogface and the dramatically shrunk cohort of tory MPs, and cannot be ignored by the pro-genocide wing of parliament.
While I'm glad that the tories have finally been knocked off their throne after 14 years of misery and turmoil, the biggest W from this entire election IMO, has to be the unwavering socialist champion for socioeconomic justice & world peace, Jeremy Corbyn, one of the indie candidates, winning his seat once again in Islington North.
The very fact these indies, PC and green MPs managed to score these historic Ws with very little resources, coverage, and even time considering how short this election campaign was, is a spectacular achievement for the british left.
There's still work to do yet and certainly no room for complacency, but overall, I don't think I've felt this cautiously optimistic about my political climate in a long while.
It also proves yet again that, despite the seemingly unsurmountable odds, the Palestine Solidarity movement's calls for a immediate ceasefire in Gaza are working, and it's not going away anytime soon, no matter who says otherwise.

Submit Here For Policy Summary
I've made this blog so that people can inquire / search for policy commitments in party manifestos for the 2024 manifestos, though I won't be publishing a summary of everything all at once, people are welcome to make requests (eg. disability, healthcare, workers rights, transport, business).
Once I have done the summaries I will tag them appropriately for people to search for via tags.
My intent is to keep these as neutral as possible by showing exactly what is in the pdfs of the manifestos available online. I will attempt to be as inclusive as possible for what I can think of on specific issues.
My ask box is open for requests but I want to keep the blog committed to policy so whilst anonymous requests will get their requests fulfilled I will not be responding to them directly. I will otherwise respond to non-anons to let them know I've made a post.
The manifesto documents I'm using are the PDF versions linked from these places:
Conservative Party
Labour Party
Liberal Democrats
Green Party of England & Wales
Reform UK (available 17th June 2024)
SNP (not yet available)
Plaid Cymru
I'm struggling to find the manifestos for the Northern Irish parties, but if they do publish some I'll try to update here. (Clearly SF is N/A but the others don't seem to have any either)
