GOTY 2021: #4 - Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
I could sum this one up quickly by saying there’s a demo on the eShop, and it sold me in a heartbeat.
The demo launched a few weeks before the game’s release, allowing players to explore the first few missions in Omega Force’s second hybrid Legend of Zelda and Dynasty Warriors collaboration.
The first Hyrule Warriors, released in 2014 on the Wii U—before being ported to the Switch in 2018 combined the cast of Zelda’s major players into the tried-and-true chaotic action of the Dynasty Warriors franchise. Working together with Nintendo, Hyrule Warriors was bursting with familiar faces and locations that spanned from Ocarina of Time to Skyward Sword. It was a radical departure for Nintendo at the time, and somehow worked extremely well. So well, in fact, that many—including me—were ecstatic to find out last year that it wasn’t just a one-time deal.
This time, however, the setting was going to be tied directly to 2017’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and initial teases implied the narrative would begin 100 years earlier—before Link’s time spent in stasis and the death of Princess Zelda’s champions.
It must be said that Dynasty Warriors is infamous in the video game scene.
I was only vaguely aware of Dynasty Warriors during the PS2 era, but that was all you really needed to know both sides. It is unapologetically simple to pick up—the combo system uses two buttons—but deceptively more complex than it appears on the surface. You’d be forgiven for not realizing that as for how many games there have been—and there have been a lot—the general makeup has been gradually iterative, from the graphics to the gameplay itself. Additionally, there’s always been criticism of quantity over quality hanging over it like dark cloud. The most current numbered title, Dynasty Warriors 9, released in 2018, but that’s not counting the two sub-series: Empires and Xtreme Legends—and yes, Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires is just around the corner. There are also two sister series, Samurai Warriors and Warriors Orochi.
All of this is to say that Dynasty Warriors has been around long enough to make both friends and enemies.
Why is this important? Because that’s arguably a lot of baggage to attach to another property, especially one revered as much as The Legend of Zelda. It raised eyebrows of some in 2014 and did so again when Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity was first announced in 2020. Even after following the first game’s success, the shadow from that cloud would return. Age of Calamity’s premise had a good hook, however, and was enticing to anyone who wanted to see more of the champions in their prime, rather than the small glimpses of their past seen in Breath of the Wild.
Hyrule Warriors had already inspired me to become a Dynasty Warriors fan, so when that demo hit the eShop I was already on board to see what Omega Force and Nintendo had done to follow up their first effort. My first impressions told me to delete the demo now after playing the first level—I was sold.
If I could describe Age of Calamity only one way, I would call it the spiritual successor to Nintendo’s experimental Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. With Nintendo’s assistance, the game lifts Breath of the Wild’s assets wholesale in the best of ways—the UI, the map, the characters, the locations, the materials, the recipes, it’s all here. Playing Age of Calamity is almost like playing Breath of the Wild—familiar, but different. Just like Zelda II turned Hyrule on its side, Age of Calamity is the souped-up cousin of Breath of the Wild, where weapons don’t break, and Princess Zelda doesn’t need anyone to save her. The heightened action fits extremely well as Hyrule is bracing for the coming impact of Calamity Ganon.
When the game officially released and it was actually in my hands, you couldn’t tear me away from it. I could write several detailed paragraphs on both the mechanics and story—the narrative deployed a few unexpected, fun twists—but a game like this ultimately must speak for itself. I can’t tell you if you’re going to like Dynasty Warriors, but I will say that Age of Calamity is Omega Force’s franchise in absolute top form.

Arle Nadja for Smash Bros.!
THERE’S A PART TWO NOW!
Ever since the introduction of the concept of a Smash Bros. Ballot, I’ve always been an advocate of three choices for Smash DLC: Bandana Waddle Dee from the Kirby series, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, and Arle Nadja from the Puyo Puyo games. Today, I’ll use every effort to make a moveset for the one and only Arle Nadja. Now, allow me to daydream a little bit and think of how my favorite female protagonist ever could be included in my favorite crossover fighting series of all time.
This will encompass mostly her whole moveset, and we will draw inspiration from the whole series. Yes, the whole series. Whenever the “Works like” part details another move, that’s only so that the motion of the attack can make sense in your head. Buckle up, because this will be a long read. Hope you’ll stick ‘till the end...! But before that, we need to address something else.
いっきまーす !
Número 0: Archetype, movement, and... To Puyo, or not to Puyo?
People are quick to say that Zelda fits the Magical Girl archetype in Smash Bros., I assure you that. I don’t think so. Despite her using magic on her moves, she’s not quite representative of the more happy type of magical girl that Arle fits in best.
In terms of how she would move on the field, well, she would be average. To put it simply, she would be below Mario in terms of movement speed and jump height. Having her as a floaty type wouldn’t suit her that much, considering she’s pretty quick and snarky. But she can’t be a fastfaller either, c’mon, she’s not that fast. Besides, having her this way works greatly to introduce her as a not-so-complicated fighter, well-balanced and all that.
Arle, in terms of raw power is quite capable. But her base level cannot be overpowered. In fact, she could be a character type that depends fully on comboing to unleash her full strength, because at base level, she could work like base Joker: capable, yet feeble and not too powerful. #foreshadowing
Now, whenever people think of Arle, most will be quick to draw a link to the puzzle series Puyo Puyo, which is absolutely normal. So, when people try to come up with a moveset for her, more often than not they come up with a mechanic that involves either chaining or pelting Puyos into the field. I’m gonna do without. Not because I couldn’t come up with one, but because it wouldn’t feel natural. It would come up as a nuisance to include a gimmick like this one in her moveset. Plus, I think we can do better by creating a mix of her appearances in both Puyo AND Madou without having to sacrifice one for the other. WITH THAT OUT OF THE WAY:
Número 1: Her Neutrals, Tilts, Smash Attacks and Aerials.
Jab: Fighter Arle’s Punch and Kick (Puyo Puyo Quest).
Works like: Mario / Luigi / Dr. Mario (jab 2 & 3)
First a punch, then a flipkick. A swift movement, fit for her.
Side Tilt: Finger-pointing (Puyo Puyo Fever era).
Works like: Original
You know this pose. A trademark of her appearances in the modern Puyo Puyo games. Not fast on motion, but could pack a punch.
Up Tilt: Thunder [サンダー] (Puyo Puyo Fever).
Works like: Ness (up tilt)
Some lightning! Inspired by the way she uses Heaven’s Ray in Fever 2, she would raise her arms, unleashing small lightning bolts on the way up.
Down Tilt: Judgement (bomb) (Madou Monogatari I Mega Drive).
Works like: Villager (down tilt)
A small bomb item that explodes in a spark instantly in front of her. No way we’re letting her use such explosives in the game, oh no.
Dash Attack: Escape dash (Madou Monogatari: Saturn).
Works like: Wario (dash attack)
Make way! A straightforward tackle attack. No one will know you were running away.
Forward Smash: Fireball (Blast) (Madou Monogatari: Final Exam).
Works like: Mario / Dr. Mario (forward Smash, attack), Zelda (forward Smash, motion)
Wind up, then unleash one explosive blast!
Up Smash: Judgement [ジュゲム] (Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary).
Works like: Original
Charge up, then unleash a barrage of ascending shocks that end up in one big explosion. The bursts come from the sides, something that hasn’t been seen yet in Smash.
Down Smash: Mind Blast [ブレインダムド] (Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary).
Works like: Original
Low on damage, good for shield damage. A wavy spell that wouldn’t deal much knockback. A confusing Smash attack that’s bound to leave some puzzled.
Neutral Air: Counter [リバイア] (Puyo Puyo Chronicles)
Works like: King K. Rool (N-Air)
A quick aerial hit with a special barrier-like effect. Don’t worry, this is not a counter. It’s only to push your foes away.
Forward Air: Fireball (downwards motion) (Puyo Puyo Fever Chuu!)
Works like: Peach / Daisy (F-Air)
A quick fling of her hand forward in mid-air. Could also have a burning effect, who knows!
Back Air: Ice Storm (wave motion) (Puyo Puyo Tetris)
Works like: Corrin (B-Air, no impulse)
A wide motion, unleashing a light wave of ice. Not strong and can’t freeze, but could be a multi-hit.
Up Air: Ruipanko [るいぱんこ] (Puyo Puyo~n)
Works like: King K. Rool (U-Air, no impulse)
A motion up, then a small, quick barrier that hits opponents from below. The barrier can protect you from incoming attacks from above. Could be used as a juggling tool!
Down Air: Guest move: Tempest [アクティーナ] (Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary)
Works like: Zelda (D-Air)
Borrowing a move from one of her friends, it’s Amitie’s Tempest attack. A big spark at the bottom that spikes opponents.
Número 2: Throws, Special Attacks and Final Smash.
Forward Throw: Y E E T (Madou Monogatari: Saturn)
Works like: Mario / Dr. Mario / Luigi (forward throw)
Imagine that you’re that spell that’s flying across the screen. Yep, a heavy throw forwards.
Back Throw: Bayoen (motion) (Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary)
Works like: Donkey Kong (back throw)
With a smile and a gleamy face, she flings her foe backwards. The attack could also feature Carbuncle attacking with a laser beam, who knows.
Up Throw: Heaven’s Ray [ヘブンレイ] (Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary)
Works like: Original
A toss up with a blast of light that could potentially damage others in the vicinity or above the blast.
Down Throw: Guest move: Algorithm [インテグラル] (Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary)
Works like: Original
Borrowing another move, this time, from Ringo: She would use Carbuncle as a book to slam her foe down! Eh? Nah, don’t worry about the little guy, I’m sure he’s OK.
Neutral Special: Fireball [ファイヤー] (Madou Monogatari: Saturn)
Works like: Plasma Breath (Ridley, wavy motion), Bomb (Young Link, explosive effect, knockback)
This one is the real deal, her trademark spell, Fireball! Pelt one good fireball that explodes on contact. Enemies that get hit by it won’t fly too far, but no one will ever be able to remove the burn. Plus, its wavy pattern makes it hard to avoid.
Side Special: Ice Storm [アイスストーム] (Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary)
Works like: Poison Breath (Piranha Plant, chargeable side-B), Blizzard (Ice Climbers, freezing effect)
Charge up, store, then on command, unleash a wave of icicle sparks that, when fully charged, can freeze you up! Low charges will disappear right away, while a full charge will take longer to dither. A nice tool for edgeguarding when fully charged (I’m getting way ahead of myself, ain’t I).
Up Special: Mind Blast Yo~n [ブレインダムド] (Puyo Puyo~n)
Works like: Thrust Uppercut (Mii Brawler, multihit), Air Slash (Shulk, second, wider hit)
A move that ascends, hits multiple times, then finishes off with a wide attack. That’s another way to use Mind Blast, wouldn’t you know! And, just like the down Smash variation, the first hit will deal big shield damage to shielding opponents.
Down Special: Diacute [ダイアキュート] (Madou Monogatari series)
Works like: Original
Her to-go mechanic and a power-up move, now that’s interesting. Most of them need you to get hit, but not this one. When used, it boosts up your next attack and ONLY your next attack (throws not included). Diacute acts as a chain starter. If your attack lands, you’ll start a chain!
Every succeeding attack you connect (throws not included) increases your chain. You start with a 1.1x increase with the first charge, and with every successfully connected attack, Arle’s power will raise by 0.05 more, to a max. of 1.5x in damage and knockback by chain 7 onwards. But with every connected attack, the time you have to connect the next hit decreases. And if you miss your attack, time runs out, or you get hit during your chain, it’s back to zero. If you need more time, you can use Diacute for a slight time refill, but its effect will be less effective the more you use it.
Final Smash: Bayoen [ばよえ~ん]
Truly, it can’t be any other move, and this one needs no introduction. A wave of H A P P Y that hits around Arle, transporting the unlucky into a field where they’re pelted with all sorts of things, from flowers, to toys, to Nuisance Puyo, even, blasting them away once all is over. Diacute charges do not power up Bayoen though.
Número 3: Aesthetic, colors and other nifty stuff.
Not covered earlier, her defense stances! Most of these are borrowed from Madou: Saturn. From top to bottom, left to right: spot dodge, roll (a sliding dodge), shield, parry, shield-break and air dodge. All taken from animations in her games.
How about, one good UI mockup now? Well, check it out! Her Chain (or Rensa) counter would appear whenever you’d connect combos with Diacute, as displayed before.
EDITOR’S NOTE MAJOR, MAJOR THANKS TO KAITE AGAIN BECAUSE IT’S THANKS TO KAITE THAT I CAN SAY Here’s her alternate colors! Inspired by Olimar and Lucina, every color references another Puyo Puyo character. Some well known, some obscure, and some that are definitely for the fans. Also, I wouldn’t go out and just make colors out of the colors of the Puyo, that’s ridiculous. (by the way I would totally play as green Ally Arle because would you just look at her)
Her design? It could be her Puyo Puyo Champions look, given the fact that it’s the one with the better proportions and the more standard design. However, I was suggested that her appearance could borrow elements from her Puyo Puyo!! Quest design, as it feels like a fusion of almost every Arle design ever. In my opinion, both would work just fine, but one of them has more flair than the other, you know?
And, yes, of course she would wear modesty shorts.
Her voice? The talented Mie Sonozaki for her Japanese version, and the awesome Erica Mendez for the overseas one.
Número 4: Reasons, special thanks and resources used.
If you made it this far, congratulations! I did this to not only release a weight from my soul, but to also partake in the creation of potential movesets. Every time I heard people say Arle wasn’t worthy of joining the fray, I knew I could find a way to include her vast story into a moveset that worked. Is this moveset perfect? Hell, no. It does reference plenty of Arle’s history, yes. But I think that with some good tweaks here and there, it could become something incredible, yes yes.
If this potential moveset sparked your interest, Celerity910 (on Discord) hooked up a pretty nice server to show support for Arle for Smash Bros., and I highly suggest you all to join in if you liked the concept I crafted! I’m pretty sure others have come up with other movesets, so it would be nice to see and compare.
Special thanks to my good Discord friend Kaite20 for helping me crank up this moveset. I couldn’t have done it without you checking and suggesting ideas for it (and also answering back when I needed help the most, you rock). Also, thanks to Marigio300X and TheSpatialWeeg for taking a look at the script before I eventually decided to just slap this here instead. You all were a tremendous help. Special thanks also to the people of Discord at Puyo Meet ‘N Greet, the English Puyo Puyo Community, and the lovely folks at The Edge of Forever for their support.
As for the resources I used for this post:

Caesar 4
IV u & IV me
Who/What: Caesar IV was developed by Impressions’ successors Tilted Mill [official site] and released in 2006. Tilted Mill also made perennial steam store pop-up Hinterland, and (the first) post-Maxis Sim City game, but it seems they’ve been on indefinite hiatus since ~2013, if not officially defunct.
Where/When/Why: See Caesar 3.
Semper Idum: My understanding of Caesar IV was that it was a less-loved successor of Caesar III, though I have little to say why this is other than glimpsed snippets of forum posts, a snatched glance at extant reviews. From the outset though, I was grateful for the later game’s longer tutorial missions introducing concepts at a manageable pace. For a while I was also particularly grateful of its modern UI conveniences, like the more accessible speed-changer (with a pause function and everything(!)), WASD keys for scrolling the map, not to mention a zoom function that let me see most of a settlement at once. In actuality it wasn’t long until I took all these for granted, of course, until coming to write this piece and remembering the enlightened, relieved spark of those first few minutes.
Despite ongoing commitments and distractions (wow The International was real good this year, now please let me forget about Dota for another twelve months) I managed to put a few hours into Caesar IV over the past week between the cracks. I breezed through the five tute missions and made a little headway into the game’s main campaign, appreciating the (generally) clear instructions about what I was expected to do, what I needed to fix, or at the very least knowing vaguely where to look in order to understand whatever problems I was having. It probably helped that the game was very similar to Caesar 3 in terms of the underlying systems, and therefore I could build from the struggles I was having last week. Probably too similar for a game made eight years later, which perhaps explains its (possibly?) lacklustre reputation. It is even has a similarly cheesy Rome Is So Awesome CG intro vid, though lacking some of the older game’s accidental 90’s camp, it comes off all-round bleak and embarrassing. It also has a similarly drifting relationship to the historical material, which continues to take a bit of wilful ignoring.
Still, these city-builders are operationally pleasurable, in that it’s just nice to think about building placements and flow-states, or to watch the ticks of development that suggest you’re doing something right, especially as this one is more willing to openly explain how things are meant to work. This is especially true earlier in the missions before I’ve accidentally fucked everything up by not accounting for certain expectations such as e.g. the equites need to be surrounded by city walls, or that the patricians refuse to walk more than a block to go to the theatre, or that in this scenario “barbarians” are definitely going to attack suddenly three years in so you better have done something about defence - time to restart with all these things in mind I suppose. The sparkly mid-2000s graphics also push a clean, idyllic pastoral aesthetic, making these towns pleasant places for players to spend managing spatial puzzles, even if it might trick us into thinking classical era life would have been nice, fresh-air fun, papering over the horrors of hygiene, slavery and colonialism in a way that only ancient history settings expect to get away with.
I’ve hardly done a deep dive into either game, but I can see how Caesar III perhaps holds up better “for its age” in some vaguely objective sense, being essentially the same game underneath, just more poorly explained. The 90s cartoony 2D graphics endear in a way the mid-2000s semi-realism falters on. But still, if I were to find the time to keep playing one, it would have to be IV, if just because fewer things seemed to be constantly on fire, it has a slightly less obnoxious soundtrack, and because clicking through menus every minute or two to change the game speed is not something I could ever come to preference, given the choice.
up next is Californium
Buy me a coffee!

So Wednesday morning I got a call from the same person who hired me at my current job, who was supposed to train since joining as an Esthetician.
She said that “ I am not spunky enough” and not “ what they are looking for” as far as the position and basically discontinued my candidacy in the training program...
thing is...
i never even got to train.
When I was hired in October, my license was still in limbo and I was put on the front desk to learn that basic position, until my license would be posted. Not to mention, when I was hired, their main desk person was there for two days before dropping to one shift a week. So I filled a hole, but I did not get trained appropraitely. Queue the fucking holiday rush. All November and mid-December I worked on front desk... awaiting my license to be approved so I could end the nightmare. I wanted to be a service provider so bad, and then I went to California for christmas, and came back to the desk again... and my family was asking me when I’d start training, and I asked myself this question. And I noticed I had a personal development meeting scheduled... so I though perhaps that I’d learn more front desk until they could train me. And my license had finally been posted...
I feel so mislead and lied to. Like ... I told an esthetician that I consider an acquaintance and SHE IS MORE QUIET THAN ME ... what the fuck
i feel like there is another “non legal” reason... and honestly ... no matter what anyone says. Estheticians and Cosmos are opposite. Esthes are not meant to be with a personality of a cosmo, and when I WAS IN SCHOOL HALF OF THE COSMOS WERE LIKE “ why are you not a stylist?? you have the personality for one!” what the fuck. Esthes are the “spa” relaxing, mellow lighting, soothing music--- massage type of environment. Not the loud obnoxious pop rock music blaring in the background while people scream out their life story over hair dryers and alumnimum foil. No---
no i think it’s bcause of the fact that I am a fuller figure
that because I am larger, the illusion is that-that i move slower and do less.. that because i am big i seem “ Less” and because of this it takes away opportunities. it’s terrible.
it’s a world of outliers. there is no more middle ground it’s either :
body positivity!! and accepting unhealthy behavior
or it’s
“appear” healthy because of ur size ( which is total bull shit) and ur not a health insurance risk, and u fit the social standard that’s been around in post modern era.
.... like i HATE THIS ... i am trying hard right now.
I am HUNGRY, guys. I’m STARVING right now.
I HAVE eaten, I am on a special diet plan to lose up to 5 a week ( yes dropping 5 a week is not as healthy as 2-3... i already know)
I am following a diet plan that was written in 1984!! and for what? so i dont have to worry about being a fat bride!! so I can make more money!! SO I DONT HAVE TO WORK IN A POSITION WHERE I HAVE TO BEND TO THE WILL OF SOME PRIVLEGED SNOB.
this society sucks. it takes away job opportunities, it takes my happiness( well for 6 months...) and i know this isn’t forever, and this is a special metabolism diet plan, so it’s not crash dieting. i mean it is a LOT less food, but it’s healthy... I mean
i get a limit on calorie intake, and i walk after eating consistent meals. they aren’t filling, but i mean-- my stomach is shrinking and that diet world is all backwards all the time anyway. but it SUCKS. i can’t just march up to the fridge and grab a cheese stick right now ( unless weight watchers which if u do, u just track it) -- anyways I digress... but there is just so much pressure and stress, which to me is a lot of suffering just to “ get it right” in the world.
It’s just very sad to go through this, and make an effort ... yet still get rejected... I mean I was kinda disliking the place anyway?? but i was hoping that my training would turn around my feelings and help me reconcile my view. but it was all a lie.
and they paid me less than a desk person... yep. they paid me what an esthetician would make when not taking commission. I feel like i got sucked into this, so they could put me on desk, pay me less, then tell me i wont be working as an esthetician to keep me on desk
... and ever since I’ve been in a state of shock. “ Well” I thought “ at least I have my other $14.50/hr job that makes me a $100 per 8 hour shift. That’s good!” .... but oh no
an email came from my supervisor last night .
Mandatory company wide call at 9 am in the morning. On a Friday... our pay day... in JANUARY.
----o fuck this can’t be good.
and my suspicions were correct....
they disbanded the beauty concierge program. I got my sister a job with this company and she lives on her own with her bf so i mean... she dependso n this too... so it sucks... i am kinda... wow
After 6 years they decide to disband THIS year. The year I join.
So I am now working very part time as a front desk person earning 10.50 and hour with the looming storm of student loans in student view....
anyways i dont know why i spew all this yhere. im looking for an outlet so perhaps some people, you, my friends-- can see what is up.
Honestly.. as far as career goes...
I don’t really know what I want anymore. I know that I dont wanna waste my life on something meaningless, and I feel like I am endlessly searching for something-- learning about the bad parts, and discarding it... but Iwould like to find something where if I find those bad parts, I’d be okay with embracing it and just rolling with the punches.
So far I have not found it yet.
in all honestly, if i could just be a home maker and not work at all, do art and cosplay and sing in the evenings-- that’d be ideal.
Right now I am learning more about UX/UI to see if I could use my art degree and make more money. But... for the most part I am looking up wax specialists, and office administration type jobs... where the front desk person does all the party planning and grocery shopping for the office. lol .. I know sounds lazy, but whatever Ican admit that--- my laziness can be translated to depression.
I just really wanna lose weight... this strict plan isn’t forever. The book I am using the method from strictly outlines that it is a temporary thing just to get metabolism on track using a series of net carbs, good fats and calorie reduction-- so it’s not like it is unhealthy. It’s not like if I went and got some cheetohs or ate a cookie I’d be fucked like if I was on keto ....
tbh I should be a weightloss plan expert I’ve done it all...
but yeah.
anyways-- thanks for listening to my rant
all in all my life isn’t that bad
i have a home
a car
a wonderful cat
a loving fiance
education
and some money to my name. i’m not totally broke.
I am very grateful and i am not to sore about all of this, it’s just crazy that it’s happening within days of eachother. and it kind sucks cuz this means i may not have a paycheck next couple weeks... or atleast a good one. 10.50 an hour my ASS. but oh well it’s SOMETHING.
ALSO .... I might make a blog for tracking my wedding plans-- if anyone likes that suff and wants to follow... I may post reference to that. otherwise <3 love you all

CHANGE YOUR MIND
You can work 16-hour days for as long as you fix bugs right away, the net effect, for the average startup fails. Why do startups have to be trimmed properly; the engines have to be paid enough to prevent them from having fun. This way of writing software is a double-edged sword of course. But if wealth is the important thing, why does everyone talk about making money can make it harder to understand how to make money from. When so much time goes in one end and so little achievement comes out the other. It's what impresses reporters, and potential new users. One reason they work on big things is that they have less invested in them. But I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, because YC is an improved version of what happened to our startup, one of the preceding five sources. If someone broke into the clothing retailer's servers, it would create a self-sustaining what drives it is the people. If it were simply a matter of working harder than an ordinary employee and getting paid proportionately, it would be tedious to let infect your private life, we liked it. If the founders aren't sure what to do next, and the company could have died. The test drive was the way to do it, you'll be ahead of most startups.
The name is more excusable if one considers it as meaning that we enable people to escape cubicles. There will be too many different types of clients for them to retain board control as well. Bill is smart and dedicated, but Microsoft also happens to have been the beneficiary of one of the founders of a lot of people. Younger would-be founders are often surprised that investors expect them either to sell the company or go public. You already know them. Their previous business experience consisted of making blue boxes to hack into the phone system, a business with the rare distinction of being both illegal and unprofitable. Someone graduating from college thinks, and is told, that he needs to get a job, leaving only a few thousand are startups. Instead start with the obvious one: lobby to get Sarbanes-Oxley. This was the era of those fluffy idealized portraits of countesses with their lapdogs. And when there's no installation, it will help them to see through intellectually dishonest arguments. Yes, he may have extensive business experience.
You can have wealth without having money. And that means the overall amount of wealth created can be greater, because strategies can be riskier. And in both cases the results are not merely acceptable, but better. The other reason creating wealth is such a good idea, why did it lose last time? But the problem the patent pledge does fix may be more pain in your own country. You're rolling the dice again, whether you like it or not. The source of the problem may be a variant of ad hominem—and a particularly useless sort, because good ideas often come from outsiders.
That's the difference between the people who'd been out in the world. We lost several high-end merchants to Web consulting firms who convinced them they'd be better off taking money from less known firms is that people work a lot harder, and get as much done in an hour. We'll suppose our group of founders have something they can release. The best one can say is: if you're in a moderately large city, drop by the main post office and watch the body language of the office is replaced by wicked humor. It's demoralizing to be on the receiving end of a paternalistic relationship, no matter how much money you raise, how you market yourself—they all depend on what you're making? Before Mark Zuckerberg started Facebook, his default expectation was that he'd end up working at Microsoft. And it's only now that you can see the evolution of the Web as closely as anyone, and I expect this to become increasingly common. But one of the biggest threats to a startup, there are all those people have to be more outsiders than insiders, if insider means anything. I've deliberately traded precision for brevity. One is that you can use from any browser will be enough of a win in itself to outweigh any awkwardness in the UI.
Fortunately, there were few obstacles except technical ones. VisiCalc, the first three were our biggest expenses. Most of the greatest fortunes have probably involved several of these. But this isn't true with startups. Many employees would work harder if they could get paid for it. But while there are a lot of development over the past couple decades. In art, for example, imply that you're bootstrapping the startup—that you're never going to make the startups they funded. The patent pledge is in effect a narrower but open source Don't be evil. Her immense data set and x-ray vision are the perfect storm in that respect. But the best thing of all is when people call what you're doing inappropriate.
When you hear people say that you shouldn't major in business in college, but the pool allowed to write on general topics was about eight people who went to the right parties in New York. The intermediate stuff—the medium of exchange, called the dollar, that doesn't physically exist. It's obvious why: the lower-tier firms exactly the startups that are likely to be one-directional: support people who hear about bugs fill out some form that eventually gets passed on possibly via QA to programmers, who put it on their list of things to do. As anyone who has tried to optimize software knows, the key is measurement. Lots of people get rich knowing nothing more than a pretentious version of u r a fag. Since most startups are in the earliest stages, will invest based on a two-page agreement. The reason is that variation in productivity. While some VCs have technical backgrounds, I don't think they'll dominate this new world is the way they're paid. The startup usually consists of just the founders. Reward is always proportionate to reward. Closely related to poverty is lack of social mobility. The trade press, we learned, thinks in version numbers.
Because the software in a Web-based application. The challenge is whether we can keep things this way. So what will business look like when it has assimilated the lessons of open source and blogging have to teach business: 1 that people work a lot harder on stuff they like. Meetings are like an opiate with a network effect. The startup didn't have enough money to reach the speed where you can get at least someone to pay you significant amounts, the money comes with more restrictions. I'm pretty sure that's a bad idea. As we later learned, it probably doesn't work to stick to old forms of distribution just because you make more that way. There were not a lot of them wrote software for it. Name-calling. Now the group is looking for more money: they want enough to last for a year or more, will be custom deals for the forseeable future. Scientists, till recently at least, nothing good.
I want to examine a more specific question: why Europe grew so powerful. This time founders may keep starting startups. In the channel era, both flowed down from the top. News. In principle you could avoid getting fat as you get old, but few were in 1998. I think it's a pretty clever piece of jiujitsu to set this irresistible force against the slightly less immovable object of becoming rich. If I had to predict now, I'd say that startups will build on, they have to be more outsiders than insiders, if insider means anything.
Thanks to Aaron Iba, Jessica Livingston, and Trevor Blackwell for reading a previous draft.

What are Top Essential Tips To Improve SEO in 2019? https://www.reddit.com/r/SEO/comments/bz9apt/what_are_top_essential_tips_to_improve_seo_in_2019/
Year by year change in the practices of information technology is showing a direct impact on the way people use search engine optimization. The techno-savvy world is towards continuous progression to implement digital marketing techniques for the sake of lead generation. A Seo service provider needs to have knowledge about the tips which can give a positive response in lead generation.
First and the most important- Never compromise with Content”
The quote, “content is the king” is not new to SEO. And after so much change in trends and methodologies of SEO, quality of content is still on top.
Let google understand the niche and purpose of your website very clearly. For this, you need to create content that assists the search engine to have a better understanding of your website role. Also, quality standards should never be compromised. The more you pay attention to the quality of the content, the more chances of improving your search engine rankings will be higher.
Consistency in branding work
As a website owner, don’t have the misconception that only the creation of best content will keep your website on top. Along with the best content, you should focus on regular branding. Don’t use cheap tricks of branding, it may create a negative impact on your website.
UX/UI design makes the difference
Good look & feel of any website seems easy for the user and therefore it engages more viewers. Not paying attention to this factor, you’re going to miss a very critical aspect of SEO in the year 2019.
Mobile indexing should be on the priority
Everyone knows how drastically mobile devices are changing search engine norms globally. The top search engine Google itself has recently committed that they are getting more traffic on mobile devices in comparison to desktop devices. That’s why mobile first indexing has been introduced by Google. Pay attention to mobile optimization of your website, and for this, you need to build a mobile-friendly website.
Develop a responsive website to improve site speed
Speed of the website is a very crucial factor when we are living in the era of 4G & 5G internet. User will not stay on your website if your site takes a long time to open. You need to check & remove all obstacles causing your website speed down. Some ways are-
● Minimize response time of the server
● Reduce HTTP request
● Use optimized images
● Asynchronous loading of CSS
Voice search optimization will be the future trend
User’s interest in voice search is increasing more and more. Nowadays, there are so many devices supporting voice search are changing the method of searching from text to voice. Also, the future is anticipated to be of voice search, therefore be prepared for voice search optimization.
Implementing SSL security is essential
A secure website gains more value, and the search engine also gives preference to rank websites with SSL security. A secure website not only creates a good impact on search engine ranking but also helps your website to gain clients’ trust.
Use blogging & add Video contents
The best way to interact with your users is to start blogging. Blogging as important as creating the best website. A consistent blogging habit will lead to the interaction of customers.
Social shares & link building
The search engine reveals trust in websites who have a strong social media presence. Also, when it comes to improving ranking, Google gives value to the brand that has a high social media presence.
Link building not a new technique, but its misuse can lose your search ranking
While doing link building, we should take care of some tactics. Links received from websites of authorities will increase high value.
Structured data for rich snippets
Best relevant content is shown as a snippet by a search engine. When the search engine crawler has a clear understanding of the purpose of content, then possibilities to show your result in snippets get high. Structured data is helpful for the crawler to get the real purpose of your content.

The Ultimate Guide to Local Reviews (Reveal)
"Welcome to a new era of marketing and service in which your brand is defined by those who experience it."
– Brian Solis
What is the local review?
The 2018 Local Consumer Review Survey conducted by Bright Local revealed some interesting data on the importance of reviews by users.
According to that survey:
· 97% of users looked online for local businesses in 2018, with 14% looking for a local business every 6 hours
· 80% of users trust online reviews as much as the personal reference
· 45% of users need at least a 3-star rating before choosing to use a business
· 48% left a local business review when asked, with 60% having been asked for their feedback
· Users read 5 reviews before Believing a business – up from 4 in 2017
Strategies for Getting More Reviews:
You're a genius (of course). But you don't have to be one to know that getting online reviews is important for your business.
So, Here are just a few ideas that you can begin putting in place:
i. Ask Customers for Reviews:
One of the biggest factors in deciding how to ask for reviews is determining which channel you’ll use.
Email is the old standby, but you may have noticed more and more companies relying on SMS messages.
Both have their advantages, but personally, I recommend email for most businesses.
That’s because generally speaking, email has the highest response rates and proves easier to use.
ii. Use Automated Services:
You can do the heavy lifting of manually managing your entire online reputation and review strategy, but you have a business to run and only so much time on your hands.
Thankfully, technology is making it increasingly easy to automate!
Shopper Checked is an automated tool that streamlines the whole process of getting more positive online reviews and customer feedback. The system also gives you clear reports and data so that you can manage your entire online reputation in one place.
iii. Incorporate Getting Reviews into Your Business Process:
For getting more reviews or feedback from the users the sales or the services staff must be motivated all the time to ask feedback from the consumers after buying a product or services.
iv. Make It Fast and Easy:
Time is precious. Reliability (25%), expertise (23%) & professionalism (20%) are the most important reputation traits for a local business

Samsung Galaxy A31 Detailed Review
Samsung Galaxy A31 Review
Complete the gap that exists.
Understanding Samsung's Galaxy An and M arrangement models are getting more earnestly continuously, as new models are gotten with minor revives, however, don't generally arrange in a legitimate request. For instance, the ongoing Galaxy M21 was essentially a Galaxy M30s with an alternate selfie camera, however passing by the model names, it's difficult to make that association.
While a few models in the A and M arrangement have slight covers in estimating, there's as yet a generally clear qualification between the arrangement themselves. As a rule, most models in the An arrangement will in general have better completes and fancier highlights, for example, in-show unique finger impression sensors, while the M arrangement organizes low costs.
Today, we are going to seek a new Galaxy A31 from Samsung, which will succeed in the Galaxy A30 on board. Contrasted with the last mentioned, the new model offers a fourth back camera, a greater battery, a higher-goals show, full help for Samsung Pay, and a more significant expense tag. Accessible in only a solitary arrangement with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of capacity for Rs. 21,999, does the Galaxy A31 merit a spot in our pined for a rundown of top telephones under Rs. 25,000?. How about we see.
Samsung Galaxy A31 Design: Been there, seen that
Given the fact that the Galaxy A31 's structure is not new to a Samsung financial program, I like how slim and compact it is. The all-polycarbonate body feels very tough yet it gets fingerprints without any problem. The telephone has a perceptibly thick jawline underneath the screen and an Infinity-U pattern at the top for the selfie camera.
There's a colossal SIM plate on the left, for two SIM cards and a microSD card. The earphone jack, USB Type-C port, and a speaker are at the base. The rear shows the Prism Crush feature of Samsung, whose blue edition we have. This telephone is additionally accessible in back and white trims. The quad-camera bunch at the back is a rectangular module and doesn't swell outward a lot.
In general, the Galaxy A31 was agreeable to use every day during this survey. It's somewhat wide, and arriving at the highest point of the presentation isn't the most straightforward, however, One UI has signals to help with this. In the wake of seeing numerous telephones in the arrangement with a similar example on the back, the structure has begun to feel a touch of exhausting now. The container substance is quite standard as well: there's a silicone case, a charger, a USB link, and a headset.
Samsung Galaxy A31 Display: AMOLED never baffles
The Galaxy A31 has a sharp full HD plus Super AMOLED display of 6.4-inch of resolution of 1080 by 2400 pixels. I saw it as more than sufficient as far as splendor, even in the daytime. Hues were a piece unreasonably rich for my preference for the default 'Striking' mode, however, this can be mitigated in the settings. The showcase is level, with no bends on the sides, however, there are no sharp edges either so performing signals isn't an issue.
There's an in-show unique mark sensor, which isn't extremely speedy yet functions admirably as long as you give it a firm press. The time taken to wake the screen, alongside the unique mark activities, cause this entire procedure to feel a piece laggy. I typically depended on face acknowledgment, which I saw as snappier. The consistently in plain view has fundamental customizations, for example, the capacity to show what melody is playing, and a decision of various clock styles.
Samsung Galaxy A31 Performance: Quite baffling
In spite of its conventional form quality and great showcase, its presentation is a major issue. Samsung uses the MediaTek Helio P65 octa-center soc, so I have no issue with the cost of a telephone which is Rs .10,000, even though I can only expect Rs.20000. Contrasted with even the Galaxy M21, which utilizes the Exynos 9611 and costs much less, the Galaxy A31 is slower in the greater part of the famous benchmarks.
Samsung's One UI v2.1, in light of Android 10, additionally feels somewhat languid generally speaking. There's a persevering trace of falter in the movements, and slack when I was exchanging between applications. It didn't hamper utilization to an extreme however holding up that additional second or two for things to happen isn't an encounter I expect at this value point. One UI itself is reasonably include rich with heaps of alternate routes, topics, and signals to mess with. There's likewise Dolby Atmos, yet just for wired and remote earphones.
The Galaxy A31 bolsters Google's Widevine L1 confirmation, which implies video spilling applications can play content at the presentation's local goals. The single speaker gets genuinely noisy however the sound quality is carefully normal. Straightforward games run well, yet heavier titles, for example, Asphalt 9: Legends or even PUBG Mobile ran at diminished design settings. Ongoing interaction was middle of the road yet they didn't look on a par with they ought to have. I additionally saw a touch of warming when messing around for longer spans.
Samsung Galaxy A31 Cameras: The Mistake Proceeds
Alright, so far the Galaxy A31 isn't looking excessively engaging, yet maybe it can vindicate itself with its camera execution. The four cameras on the back incorporate an essential 48-megapixel sensor, an 8-megapixel sensor with a wide-point focal point, a 5-megapixel profundity camera, and a 5-megapixel full-scale camera. The openings of the considerable number of cameras aren't especially amazing, with even the one on the principle camera being simply f/2.0. The front camera utilizes a 20-megapixel sensor. The camera application ought to be natural to most Samsung clients, however, I found a couple of missing highlights which should have been there. Recalling the expense and location of the handset, it's a little strange not to have 4K video capture as an option and even a low-light night-mode quiet. Master mode is disabled, with no alternative to change the screen speed. Self-adjust speed is fair, however, this telephone will in general chase for center in low light.
You do get Samsung's 'Scene optimizer' AI motor, and the capacity to spare stills and video in the HEIF and HEVC groups. Under great light, the primary sensor catches better than average looking photographs. Pictures are caught as 12-megapixel shots as a matter of course yet you can take shots at the full 48-megapixel goals if necessary. In low light, the clamor is smothered well however subtleties are inadequate with regards to, which is recognizable when you zoom in to photographs a piece. Close-ups shot under great light passage better, with great subtleties and hues, however, because of screen slack, even slight developments can cause obscuring.
The wide-point camera catches relatively more vulnerable subtleties, and HDR isn't as powerful as on the primary camera. In low light, subtleties are a lot of more awful and there's no Night mode to help rescue shots.
Live Focus works adequately well, and the measure of foundation obscure can be balanced for picture shots. The large scale camera makes a reasonable showing with extraordinary close-ups yet I didn't see picture quality as far superior to what I've seen from telephones with 2-megapixel sensors.
Recordings are restricted to 1080p goals, however, quality is respectable given plentiful light when shooting with the essential camera. The Galaxy A31 does not even offer electronic adjustment, and therefore the developments look jerky with the camera. You can't change to the wide-point camera while recording however you can change to it before you start. True to form, video quality is just about satisfactory under great light yet poor in low light. There's no adjustment here either.
The selfie camera catches 12-megapixel stills naturally (8-megapixels in the event that you pick a more tight yield). Be that as it may, you can take shots at the local goals as well. Selfies are commonly usable when shooting outside, in sunlight. Skin tones will in general look excessively warm and HDR can be an all in or all out, yet it's not all that awful. The camera battles to recreate great subtleties in low light, frequently leaving you with delicate surfaces and feeble subtleties.
In general, the cameras on the Galaxy A31 are very disappointing and need numerous highlights that you'd find in numerous telephones that cost much less.
Samsung Galaxy A31 Battery: Pretty great
On the off chance that there is one saving grace about the Galaxy A31, at that point it would be battery life. The 5,000mAh battery went on for 18 hours and 11 minutes in our HD video circle test, which is awesome. Indeed, even with standard utilization, I was effectively ready to work out positively past a day on a solitary charge. There is 15W quick charging, so you can energize the battery to 50 percent in 60 minutes, yet filling it totally takes well more than two hours.
Decision: Who is the Samsung Galaxy A31 for?
I'm battling to locate a valid justification for the Galaxy A31 to exist, and I sincerely can't consider one. It appears just as Samsung has propelled it basically to fill the value hole between the Galaxy A50s【₹ 19,475 and the Galaxy A51 (Review) — both of which would be a greatly improved pick than the Galaxy A31. Battery life is the principle champion element here, alongside the nice form quality and show.
Be that as it may, the mediocre SoC execution and disappointing cameras are flaws that are too glaring to even consider ignoring when you're paying more than Rs. 20,000. Regardless of whether the value were to drop, there are a lot of all the more remarkable and highlight rich choices in the market, for instance, telephones of Realme and Xiaomi, or Samsung's own Galaxy A50s and Galaxy M31.

Transcript: Ask the UXperts: Meaningful Animation – Getting it Right — with Val Head
Animation is a word that used to make me shudder.
I’m from a generation of devs that grew up in the era of Flash splash screens. Say no more.
But Val Head has changed all that for me.
She has successfully demonstrated that if you are smart about how and when you use animation in your work, the results can be spectacular. Take Stripe’s checkout experience for example. It uses animation to guide you through a process, reducing cognitive load and adding delight. And that is just one of the great examples we chatted about.
If you’ve always been a skeptic, read through Val’s transcript. You won’t be disappointed.
If you didn’t make the session because you didn’t know about it, make sure you join our community to get updates of upcoming sessions.
If you’re interested in seeing what we discussed, or you want to revisit your own questions, here is a full transcript of the chat.

Hello everyone! I’m really glad you joined us to talk UI animation today.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:06
It’s awesome to see so many people here from so many places!
valhead
2017-04-26 22:07
Our topic tonight is UI animation for the web. And I’ve found that it’s some people are hesitant to use in their work.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:07
Sometimes because they feel they don’t know it well enough.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:08
But often times I think it’s more not being sure how to use it.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:09
And, of course, there’s also some folks who are totally against web animation at all because they only associate it with things like skip intros or banner ads and such.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:09
but animation on the web does not have to be those things if you don’t want it to.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:09
(I’ve most definitely seen Flash-like skip intros made with CSS, and maybe you have to, but there’s so much more animation can do on the web.)
valhead
2017-04-26 22:11
For example, Stripe’s Checkout uses animation in nearly every interaction in the checkout process. http://ift.tt/1f8E1en But buying something with that services doesn’t feel over done or flashy
valhead
2017-04-26 22:11
(You can use the “donate to watsi” button on their site to see it in action for yourself)
valhead
2017-04-26 22:11
And sites likes http://ift.tt/2nKbNTc use animation to bring the artist’s work to life.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:12
Both of those examples provide top-notch experiences, and neither would be the same without the animation because it’s truly part of the design.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:13
Every animation in Checkout is there for a reason. They’re there to help you, the person using it, to buy a thing.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:13
The key to great UI animation is that combination of purpose and style.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:14
There are a number of ways animation can add to UX in ways that some of our other design tools may not be quite as good at
valhead
2017-04-26 22:15
Maintaining spacial orientation is one thing animation can be a big help with.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:16
Often times, parts of an interface or some functionality needs to live off screen or out of view, or even behind other elements. We can use animation to help users get a sense of the space and layering of an interface even when they can’t see eveything
valhead
2017-04-26 22:17
Cotton Bureau uses animations to reveal the steps of their checkout process, and to reveal their navigation even though both are offscreen initially http://ift.tt/2g8Zmk1
valhead
2017-04-26 22:18
the nav slides on from the left and the checkout flow continues on to the right of what’s visible on screen. The animations that transition each in and out of view show users where those things “live”.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:18
This helps to reduce the cognitive load for the users by showing them this relationship visually instead of them having to keep track in their heads.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:19
Animation can also be a huge help for giving feedback for two reasons
valhead
2017-04-26 22:19
First because motion tends to draw our eye, and as designers we can use motion to direct users’ attention to where an important thing is happening. Or, even where a mistake has been made.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:20
That aspect can be really helpful for avoiding change blindness too.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:20
Second because animation can help us display multiple kinds of feedback in a small space.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:21
Stripe’s donate or pay button is a good example of this. The loading time and success state confirmation are all taken care of by that button thanks to the animation they use.
glennveugen
2017-04-26 22:21
Q: “motion tends to draw attention to our eye”. Does this lose its effect over time? Should we maybe distinguish between animations for first time use, and repeat use, where animation might lose its effectiveness?
valhead
2017-04-26 22:22
The third useful thing animation can help with that I want to mention tonight is animation’s affect on perceived performance.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:23
By using animation during times of un-avoidable waits (loading, saving, etc) animation can help make it seem like those wait times are shorter by focusing users on the progress instead of the wait. Or by building trust with a well designed (not generic) loader.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:24
Shopify has a great progress focused loader when you create a new account. It lists a series of steps over time like “1. Preparing your store” “2. starting your theme” as your wait for your new account to be made.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:24
Those steps certainly aren’t happening as they’re listed, but they keep you focused on the progress, not the wait.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:25
Viget did a really interesting study a while back on loaders, seeing what kind of animation people would wait for the longest. Their conclusion was that people would wait longer for more detailed and designed loading animations, but got frustrated sooner with generic loaders. Really interesting!
valhead
2017-04-26 22:25
http://ift.tt/2kepWqp
valhead
2017-04-26 22:26
@glennveugen I’m not sure it loses effectiveness over time as much as it could become annoying if you use large amounts of animation for a very repetitive task.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:27
For example, banner ads were animated to get our attention. And i’m not sure that ever stopped working so much as we all got so annoyed with it we learned to ignore the whole section of where banners typically were or blocked them entirely.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:28
So, I would say that grand animations for bringing something on to the screen, or transitioning between views could get old fast if used more than just on the first time around.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:28
But things like shaking the form field that has an error, or a pulsing tool-tip probably wouldn’t suffer from that same effct.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:29
Context matters too, of course. So it would vary from case to case.
hawk
2017-04-26 22:29
Ready for questions @valhead ?
valhead
2017-04-26 22:29
Yes! let’s do some questions :slightly_smiling_face:
hawk
2017-04-26 22:30
Hit Val with your questions!
glennveugen
2017-04-26 22:30
when is a good time in the design process to start taking animation into account, and what is a good approach to it?
valhead
2017-04-26 22:30
Ah, that’s a good question for sure
glennveugen
2017-04-26 22:31
animation is usually the first aspect that’s being sacrificed, unfortunately :slightly_smiling_face:
valhead
2017-04-26 22:31
As early in the design process as possible, really. Right from the beginning. The earlier you start thinking about where animation could be useful in specific tasks or user flows, the better chance you’ll come up with something good.
stuartmurray
2017-04-26 22:31
as far as accessibility is concerned, what would be some good fundamentals to keep in mind when including animation in design?
valhead
2017-04-26 22:31
And the better chance that your entire team will see its value.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:32
@glennveugen For better or worse, I think the main reason animation is the first thing to be sacrificed is that we allow it to be seen as just “extra” or “decoration”.
mynameischad
2017-04-26 22:33
Do you / how do you use storyboarding a lot to work out interactions and CTA animations?
valhead
2017-04-26 22:33
But if we treat it as a true design tool, it becomes part of the whole design effort.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:33
So, to avoid animation being seen as just an “extra” we need to include in it our design discussion and process early on and be able to articulate its value. Just like we would for other design tools like type and colour and such.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:35
@stuartmurray Definitely. Accessibility concerns can be a bit different with animation
glennveugen
2017-04-26 22:35
And how to convey design specs to developers? Type and colour are rather simple, also in terms of CSS setup? How is this with animations? There are lots of aspects that come into play when dealing with animation: duration, easing, … Any tips or tools to make design specs for animation?
valhead
2017-04-26 22:36
There’s the basic stuff in the WACG like not flashing the screen and including pause/play controls and such
valhead
2017-04-26 22:36
But since that was written for a slightly different era of web design, we need to connect some of the dots ourselves
mynameischad
2017-04-26 22:36
Not flashing is, I’m assuming, to avoid epileptic shock?
valhead
2017-04-26 22:37
For example, rotating carousels and such are long playing animations really, and they should have some kind of pause/play controls
valhead
2017-04-26 22:37
Not moving the actionable items is another thing to keep in mind
valhead
2017-04-26 22:37
And that sounds like something that’s easy to avoid. Like, who would want to move a button someone is trying to click on, right?
stuartmurray
2017-04-26 22:38
yes that’s a pet hate actually, I think I’ve used sites or apps that moved the buttons I was trying to tap or click on
valhead
2017-04-26 22:38
But I’ve seen more than one slideshow/carousel of content out there that is on an auto timer with no way to pause it and the button fades away before someone can click on it if they have any mobility issues at all. (Or even if they were just like, distracted for a second)
valhead
2017-04-26 22:39
Triggering issues with motion sickness and vestibular disorders is possible with animation. And that’s not something we’ve really had to think about before
valhead
2017-04-26 22:40
I wrote an article on what that means, and how we can avoid triggering people on A List Apart a while back: http://ift.tt/2oRfI1w
valhead
2017-04-26 22:41
Browsers are starting to implement a reduce motion media query to help with that too

2017-04-26 22:42
What are the tools we can use for creating an Anemation for any application?
valhead
2017-04-26 22:42
@mynameischad I use storyboards often as initial sketches for animation ideas.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:43
I find they can be really helpful for getting groups of people to give input on animations too. Project managers, designers, UX folks…. everyone can draw some simple storyboards to show a possible animated solution.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:43
So they can be really useful for getting a conversation going around animation and where it could possibly be useful.
mynameischad
2017-04-26 22:43
When I do it, I tend to treat them like keyframes (using arrows and such to denote motion)
mynameischad
2017-04-26 22:44
Are there techniques that you tend to fall back on?
valhead
2017-04-26 22:44
When it comes to actually evaluating if an animated CTA is effective though, I think interactive prototypes can be more hepful. It can be difficult to really judge things like that without testing out how they feel to interact with.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:44
But starting with storyboards to narrow down the possible approaches or ideas can be really useful before jumping into a prototype too.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:46
@mynameischad Yep, drawing out the key aspects of the motion in boxes, or frames, is pretty much how I use them. I really like Eva Lotta-Lamm’s approach for sketching animated interactions.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:46
She doesn’t call them storyboards by name, but her approach works great for storyboards.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:47
Her advice is to sketch out the trigger of the interaction, the action that will be animated and then write out some description of the quality, or how the animation should look/feel
valhead
2017-04-26 22:47
I thought her approach was so useful I interviewed her about it for the UI Animation Newsletter: http://ift.tt/2hmzuyV
mynameischad
2017-04-26 22:48
YES! Awesome
valhead
2017-04-26 22:48
(She’s the best at sketching interface things!)
valhead
2017-04-26 22:48
@glennveugen conveying animation design decisions to developers doesn’t have a really great solution yet
valhead
2017-04-26 22:48
I know that at least a couple of the prototyping tools are working on better ways to do this
valhead
2017-04-26 22:49
because it’s so essential
valhead
2017-04-26 22:49
my advice is to give developers some visual representation of the animation. Either a motion mock up (video of how it should work/look essentially) or even a basic prototype.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:50
Then also provide them with duration and delay values for the animations, details of the easing used (the cubic-bezier curve or spring values, or however else they’re expressed) along with any repeat values or iteration counts
valhead
2017-04-26 22:51
I know some larger teams have developed their own internal tools for pulling the data devs need out of After Effects-made motion comps. But even just writing it out by hand will be helpful.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:52
And if you’ve just been working out all the details of a particular animated interaction, you can probably rattle most of that stuff off right off your head. So it’s best to write that all down right after working on the design side of the animation. Much easier that way :slightly_smiling_face:
valhead
2017-04-26 22:53
@mra.kumar Sorry, I’m not sure I understand your question. Are you looking for a tool that exports animation for all possible platforms?
mra.kumar
2017-04-26 22:54
Yes for Android and other devices
hawk
2017-04-26 22:55
We have time for one more question after this. Anyone got one?
valhead
2017-04-26 22:55
@mra.kumar Depending on what kind of animations you’re looking to create a tool like Airbnb’s Lottie might do the trick.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:55
http://ift.tt/2jYR8fh
valhead
2017-04-26 22:56
It uses the bodymovin’ library to export animations from an After Effect composition to android, iOS or React Native compatible files
vedanthk
2017-04-26 22:56
Are there certain parameters to look out for when we picture adding UI animations?
valhead
2017-04-26 22:56
Bodymoinv’ itself can be used to translate After Effects compositions to SVG or canvas for the web as well http://ift.tt/1FnHQJv
mra.kumar
2017-04-26 22:56
@Valhead Thanks
valhead
2017-04-26 22:57
Those tend to work best for animations that aren’t dependent on interaction though
valhead
2017-04-26 22:58
@vedanthk It’s hard to make over-arching rules that can apply to every variety of UI animation out there, but I think if there’s one thing to keep in mind across the board, it’s context.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:59
Or maybe more specifically, how well the animation fits with the current context.
valhead
2017-04-26 22:59
A good fit with the context is what makes animations feel right or work well.
valhead
2017-04-26 23:01
The same animations that are great in a game’s UI, for example, may not be great for a corporate web site, no matter how well those animations were designed.
valhead
2017-04-26 23:01
In the same way, an animation that’s perfect for calling attention to an error, may not work at if it’s used on every button in a navigation bar.
valhead
2017-04-26 23:02
The purpose of the animation has to fit the context it’s in for it to feel right, essentially.
valhead
2017-04-26 23:03
If the context and the animation gel, it makes for a great experience. So much so that the animations almost become invisible because they’re just part of the experience and the overall design.

Apple updates Apple Music for Android with a new UI to remove the clutter
Apple has remodeled the Android model of Apple Music to deliver “extra readability and simplicity” to the app. The new update revamps the consumer interface of the app whilst bumping the version wide variety to 2.zero for the app.
It’s far unclear if the revamp is confined to cosmetic adjustments that simply adjustments the UI factors to dispose of the clutter or if it extends to the backend and the way the offerings are performed within the app.
Right here is the certain changelog that got here with the update:
Now Playing. Study lyrics for songs as you concentrate. Library. Navigate your Song easily and see the Downloaded Song you may play offline. For You. Get pointers for playlists, albums, and greater—based on Track you like. Browse. pay attention to new Track first, plus playlists for any temper or interest. Radio. The song into Beats 1 shows or concentrate to stations for any style. The new version seems to have far lesser menus than the older menus and the scrolling has decreased notably.
Consistent with a file by using Android Police
The app appears to be greater responsive and quicker. One component to word Right here is that Apple Music fees extensively inexpensive in India than in U.S.
In an evaluation, Apple Tune subscription fees about Rs one hundred twenty according to month for people, Rs a hundred ninety according to month for the family up to 6 participants and Rs 60 consistent with the month for students in contrast to $9.99 it prices for individuals according to a month in United states.
Can Sacramento California’s Levees Survive A Robust Pine Apple Express Atmospheric River
In watching the big quantity of precipitation a good way to deluge Northern California just after the first week of 2017 our Assume Tank dared to invite the query no one needs to talk approximately; are the Sacramento Levees safe? It seems that Arnold Schwarzenegger as Governor of California tried to get the upgrading of these levees into the finances numerous instances (in conjunction with water retention tasks for droughts), but the Democrat majority in the California Legislature at the time wanted to spend that money on social applications.
At the time Democrats called it a victory, but possibly in hindsight they set the state up for a pending catastrophe, we will quickly see as this mega storm drops its mother load on California. How will a whole lot water hit Northern California? Nicely, the La times had an interesting article published on January 6, 2017, titled; “In Great Lakes, preparing for an Enormous hurricane,” by using Tony Barboza, Hailey Branson-Potts and Joseph Serna which said:
The epic system could sell off a lot of rain and snow that some ski runs
And roads are closed caution of vast flooding, mudslides, and avalanches inside the Sierra Nevada. As much as 12 inches of rain is predicted on regions underneath 8,500 ft & As much as 7 feet of snow in better elevations. The typhoon changed into packing the identical wallop as one that hit Northern California in 2005, inflicting $300 million in damage. This system may want to bring 36-hours of heavy rain to elements of Northern CA. While that is good information for California, in its 6th 12 months of drought, the coming rain should soften already-standing snow – feeding watersheds swollen from storms in advance this week.”
Actual sufficient and other reports from the Weather Channel propose that
The quantity of water may be within the neighborhood of 15-Mississippi Rivers and about 57 Trillions of gallons of water, sufficient to absolutely have an effect on the planet’s rotation, albeit only a few hundredth of a second. Will the error of the California Legislature at some point of Arnold’s tenure as governor and the following years lately under Jerry Brown price us Taxpayer across the united states of America 100s of Billions of bucks? It simply might, and this could be a difficult call for the Trump Administration if that levee machine fails and drowns thousands of people and placed a terrific bite of Sacramento underwater.
How horrific is the state of affairs
Well, it seems there was a number of snow %, about a decade ago, one year that positioned the snow tires at a hundred seventy-five% of regular and that they have been extremely worried lower back then, rapid forward 10-years later, greater put on and tear on the levee system and no foremost improvements, that would spell disaster and anybody who isn’t worried about it, is not paying interest – permit’s just desire the specialists and Weather forecasters were given this one incorrect. Assume on it – be notable, do not hesitate.
Taking A Look At The Differences Between Old And New Music
Music entertains, educates and informs. Whilst it has been around for a long term Track has gone thru a number of modifications that variety from the devices used to the fashion of composition. That will help you out, here are some of the methods in which Song has advanced over time:
Use of instruments
Old Music becomes sung using actual devices. The instruments used included: cello, viola, tuba, French horn, bassoon, trombone, trumpet and many others. Even when recording, the musicians needed to play the real units. Because of this, the Vintage musicians needed to first discover ways to play the gadgets then file the Tune. That is now not the case with the modern Track. modern-day Song closely relies on laptop programs. the usage of the programs you could input the sound of any Track instrument without having the tool at your disposal or even knowing a way to play it. This has given upward thrust to tens of millions of Music superstars who even do not know the most simple Music devices.
Genre
most of the Old musicians stuck with a given Song Genre. When you were asked to an organization the different musicians in specific categories depending on their Song genres, you could without problems do it. This is not the case. Genres in modern Track are blurred as musicians healthy different genres. Currently, it is not uncommon to find a musician singing hip-hop and at the same time undertaking R&B. Some musicians have even received awards in Song classes that aren’t recognized for. For example, Nelly, who is recognized for R&B has received a country Song award. Because of the constrained confinement of the distinctive Song genres, the Tune world has ended up confused and it’s nearly impossible to tell the specific Genre that a given musician engages in.
Song and class
Whilst Some few Antique songs were offensive and the degree indicates every so often were given raucous, matters have gone worse. Currently, in particular, inside the Hip-Hop international, the Tune has emerged as too offensive. If you have attended hip-hop shows you must have noticed that maximum of the rappers brazenly insult their audiences and use plenty of offensive phrases. With regards to R&B, the Tune has moved from the coolest Antique superb and empowering Song to provocative and every now and then offensive Track. In summary, we can say that the current Tune has misplaced magnificence. The unfortunate aspect is that the target market seems to like it.
Android Vs IOS App Development in Singapore
It isn’t always surprising that Singapore corporations choose a cellular-first strategy as APAC pronounced over 50% telephone penetration inside the USA closing 12 months. It claimed that the common cellphone user in Singapore had around 40 apps installed at a time on their cellphone. Most of those apps belong to the social media class as sixty-four% of the populace is energetic on social media according to We are Social in 2016. The opposite fundamental attraction is gaming as App Annie confirmed the top-ranked on the Apple keep being Minecraft, Conflict Royale, Monopoly, Mobile strike and of course the cutting-edge sensation, Uber.
Since the dawn of the cellular app era,
Customers have been pulled in two principal directions: Android or iOS. Windows is still a popular operating gadget however it is manifestly now not inside the going for walks for the top spot anymore. There are numerous other working structures, which might be employed by small segments of cell app customers. However, they do not occupy key positions in the cell app marketplace.
Function of Apple in Singapore
Apple has a variety of credibility amongst friends and clients alike. It has a far centered advertising and marketing approach that shows simply in iOS apps. Apple is in a category all its personal and all of the opposition obtainable knows that. It has a sturdy presence throughout Asia, particularly Singapore because the city is a thriving generation hub. Lots of them are primarily based here and running as freelancers for organizations within the West that outsource. App users are aware of the excellent and gravitate in the direction of iOS devices because of this. The following Net revealed that u. S . had the Maximum iOS gadgets in line with populace these beyond few years.
Google as seen in Singapore
Android is a different tale altogether. The advertising method of Google differs significantly from that of Apple. those tech giants appear like moving their brands in completely contrary guidelines. They don’t have the equal dreams and as I’m able to give an explanation for, their target audience is not precisely the identical. Most Asian economies are 0.33 world nations so a majority of phone customers flip to Android.
There are some key elements which determine the modern-day situation of Android and iOS apps in Singapore.

The Legacy of United kingdom Schooling
New Post has been published on https://pressography.org/the-legacy-of-united-kingdom-schooling/
The Legacy of United kingdom Schooling
Heaps of Indonesians are now pursuing their better Training inside the Uk, interested in u . S .’s ethnic and cultural range in addition to its reputation for terrific better Schooling standards.
In keeping with the British ambassador to Indonesia, ASEAN, and Timor-Leste Moazzam Malik, presently there are about 3,500 Indonesian students pursuing college stages – from bachelor’s to doctoral – inside the Uk, making the united states one of the most well-known higher Education locations among Indonesians.
“In truth, one-0.33 of the scholars despatched abroad by means of Indonesia’s Endowment Fund for Schooling [LPDP] choose to go to the United Kingdom,” Malik stated, regarding certainly one of Indonesia’s most prestigious scholarship our bodies.
Malik brought that the range become ‘only a begin’, watching for an increase of Indonesian college students within the years to come.
In step with records from the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia and London’s educational attaché Aminudin Aziz, as quoted with the aid of tempo.Co, technology remains on the top of Indonesians’ choice listing while studying in England, observed by means of herbal sciences and social and political sciences.

In step with records from the United Kingdom Council for Global Pupil Affairs, from the 12 months 2015 to 2016, there had been a total of 438,010 Global students within the country’s universities, constituting 19 percentage of its overall Scholar numbers (hyperlink: https://m.tempo.Co/read/information/2016/11/21/079821795/apa-kota-terfavorit-mahasiswa-indonesia-di-inggris).
Non-Ecu college students hail from nations like China, Malaysia, India, Hong Kong, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, among others.
“Essex university is the great location to take a look at human rights. The professors and academics are human rights practitioners, some of them are running on this issue within the United Nations […] with students coming from all over the global. It is very exciting to change experiences with those Worldwide students, all the while increasing our network,” Roichatul, widely known for her work in advocating the rights of sufferers of the 1965 bloodbath, said.
She added that she turned into deeply humbled when she heard stories from her fellow human rights advocates who hailed from countries with extraordinarily tough social and political situations.
“So many friends came from struggle-laden nations like Palestine and the previous Soviet Union. I found out loads of them, with the aid of information how they had to undergo very tough times in their lives,” she explained.
Samiaji Adisasmito, a economic technology (finch) practitioner who earned his Grasp’s Degree in enterprise and facts era (IT) from Aston university, said that by analyzing with Worldwide students from everywhere in the world, he has extended his network distinctly, something which has helped him greatly in advancing his profession in an international placing.
He also lauded the United Kingdom’s robust instructional way of life, pronouncing that he changed into taught by ‘the first-class lecturers’ while studying there, paving the manner for his modern fulfillment as an entrepreneur.
“It is certainly enjoyable to research from those human beings. I am capable of analyzing deeply about my difficulty with the aid of having discussions with them on almost an each day basis, whilst being endorsed to conduct my studies autonomously on the identical time,” Samiaji, the founder of Jojonomic, a pioneer for mobile repayment applications in Southeast Asia.
The utility has helped almost forty companies and over 2,000 personnel to save more time and as much as forty percent in their expenses thru an extra efficient, obvious and responsible technique of cash compensation.
Roichatul and Samiaji are simply two examples of Indonesians who benefitted from their United kingdom Training and are presently playing a hit and impactful careers in their domestic country, giving back with the aid of applying their understanding into exercise.
Different prominent Indonesian figures who have earned their tiers within the United kingdom include senior journalist Desi Anwar and presidential body of workers office deputy for precedence programs research and improvement Yanuar Nugroho, as well as first-class-promoting author and Schooling activist Ahmad Fuadi, among others.
So that you can honor their outstanding achievements, Roichatul and Samiaji were protected in the have a look at United kingdom Alumni Awards 2017, along side seven in their contemporaries.
Following the success of accomplishing the United Kingdom Alumni Awards 2016 for the primary time closing yr, the British Council lately held the second edition of the awards this 12 months in Indonesia, to honor high-attaining and tremendous Indonesian alumni from Uk better Schooling Establishments.
This year, the awards also are being held in 13 Different places: Egypt, Ghana, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Turkey and the USA.
In Indonesia, the event became hung on March 2 on the Fairmont Jakarta in Senayan, Jakarta.
Like last 12 months, the awards had been divided into 3 classes: professional fulfillment, entrepreneurial and social impact.
The professional achievement award acknowledges exceptional alumni who have proven exemplary leadership and outstanding achievements of their profession, while consistently demonstrating the very best level of integrity and individual in their profession.
Finalists for the category protected Yogyakarta’s Gadjah Mada university lecturer and medicinal chemistry laboratory head Dr. Ritmaleni; law company Jakarta Global regulation workplace proprietor and Indonesian Bar Association vice chairman Tahir Musa Luthfi Yazid; as well as Indonesia’s main photosynthesis researcher and director of the photosynthetic pigments studies middle at Ma Chung university in Malang, East Java, Tatas Hard Panintingjati Brotosudarmo.
The entrepreneurial award, meanwhile, honors alumni who are actively concerned in initiating or contributing to revolutionary new thoughts or commercial enterprise possibilities with strong increase possibilities.
Finalists for the award were kravasia.Com founder Ignatius Ryan Hasim, rate compensation cellular software Jojonomic cofounder Samiaji Adisasmito, in addition to college examination education courses company EduLab’s founder Oki Earlivan Sampurno.
last however no longer least, the social impact award mentioned alumni who have made an exceptional contribution and commitment to growing fantastic social exchange and enhancing lives.
Finalists for the social impact category comprised the college of Indonesia’s (UI) English branch lecturer Berlin Putri Indah Dettori, who is additionally active in promoting literacy among Indonesians via her non-profit community-based totally packages English Artwork Lab and Theater for Existence; human rights activist pushing for the abolition of the demise penalty Ricky Gunawan; as well as National Fee for Human Rights (Komnas HAM) commissioner Roichatul Aswidah.
The judging panel for the awards blanketed British Council in Indonesia Director Training and Society Teresa Birks and British Embassy to Indonesia in Jakarta Political Counselor Thérèsa O’Mahony-Heer.
There have been lead judges for each category: the entrepreneurial award became headed by means of retailer Alun-Alun Indonesia Experience’s Coping with Director Catharina Widjaja; writer Ahmad Fuadi, also a winner of the previous 12 months’s social impact award, led the social effect class; and Bank Indonesia’s FinTech Deputy Director Junanto Herdiawan ran the professional fulfillment award.
Consistent with Ahmad, the judges located it very hard to determine the award recipients as all of the candidates had made wonderful achievements in all factors of their paintings.
“We then agreed to use some benchmarks [in judging the finalists], inclusive of how their paintings has impacted the lives of others, via network outreach or nationwide affect or perhaps their work extends internationally? We additionally assessed the sturdiness in their effect: is it quick-term or lengthy-time period? Subsequently, we got here up with a list,” Ahmad informed The Jakarta Publish regarding the evaluation technique.
Catharina, meanwhile, explained that for a finalist to win the entrepreneurial category, their enterprise had to show robust increase prospects.
evaluation difficulties aside, the panel of judges ultimately determined on three winners for this year’s awards. They had been Tatas Hard Panintingjati Brotosudarmo for the professional success award, Samiaji Adisasmito for the entrepreneurial award and Ricky Gunawan for the social effect award.
In step with us of a Director of British Council in Indonesia Paul Smith OBE, the awards searching for to have a good time the outstanding matters that show up when awesome minds gather and examine together.
“Just like the students from the united states who observe within the United kingdom to carry back the entrepreneurial spirit of the u . S . A . again to America, those terrific Indonesian minds and capabilities who had been fortunate and privileged to Experience the satisfactory universities within the United kingdom also are bringing lower back impactful actions to Indonesia,” Smith stated in his commencing remarks during the occasion.
Smith said he was hoping that every one the outstanding minds who collected at some point of the awards ceremony had been capable of hold to contribute greater to Indonesia’s socio-monetary trajectory as Indonesia became heading toward what he called ‘its superb destiny’.
Malik, in the meantime, emphasized the significance of Worldwide Schooling in a globalized global rife with tension.
“We now live in a distinctly interconnected international, wherein terrible things go across borders, so do right matters. Consequently, In order to solve issues, we should go across borders, not simply physically however also mentally through being able to recognize Other humans’s reviews,” Malik stated.

Hands on with Synology’s RT2600ac monster Wi-Fi router
From the minute you take it out of the box, you can tell the Synology RT2600ac Wi-Fi router ($229.95) means business. Its four removable antennas will never let the unit fade into your furniture, or compete for fashion points with many of the new “cute” units in the market. But it delivers blazing network performance, a powerful, computer-like UI, and some of the very best Wi-Fi coverage I’ve seen from a single device. Installation and setup The unit is simple to install and configure. Aside from screwing the antennas onto the base and plugging it in, initial setup can be done through the router’s setup wizard. One nice touch is that it asks you right away whether you’re configuring it as a router or an access point, so you don’t have to jump through hoops to use it as an AP. In my tests, it instantly identified our two ISPs, a cable company and U-Verse, automatically. It also supports PPPoE and various manual IP configuration options. Once set up, configuration and administration is done through a powerful, desktop-like, web interface. Th RT2600ac is also a mini-NAS
If you already have a Synology NAS, the user interface of the RT2600ac will look familiar. Synology’s Router Manager (SRM) is not exactly the same as its DSM (DiskStation Manager), but it’s close. SRM doesn’t have nearly as many packages as DSM, at least so far, but it does have packages for VPN, DNS, and several sharing services. What makes this similarity particularly powerful is you can use the RT2600ac as a mini-NAS by adding a drive. It supports Synology’s CloudStation Server, which can be used to keep files in sync from any of your network devices using its ShareSync client. It can also serve your media files. Clearly you won’t have the same volume management and RAID capabilities you would with a standalone NAS. But for the price, you’re getting both a high-performance router and an inexpensive way to back up your data. Design The unit’s raised design and passive cooling grills keep it from running hot. On the back is the power switch, along with a WAN port, 4 LAN ports (one of which can be used for a 2nd WAN), power jack, a USB 3.0 port, and a reset pinhole. There are also buttons on the side for turning Wi-Fi on and off and WPS. It has mounting holes on the bottom for a simple wall mount, but the little legs stick out and don’t seem to be removable, so I’m not sure how that would work. The unit also doesn’t include any type of stand for sitting it upright, so it needs to lie horizontally. The RT2600ac is chock full of the capabilities you’d expect from a flagship offering, with a configurable firewall, port forwarding, VOIP and IPTV configuration options, Parental Controls, Traffic Controls, guest network, DMZ, device connection management, and DoS protection. Updates take just a couple clicks, although the unit requires a few minutes to reboot, so give yourself some time. About the only thing it won’t do is bond two LAN ports together to provide a connection potentially capable of 2Gbps (although there are so many caveats on that type of bonding that you won’t miss this in most cases). Auto band selection and dual WAN support The RT2600ac lets you use a single SSID for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, automatically connecting each device to the correct frequency. But the feature that really caught my eye is dual WAN support. You can use this for some basic load balancing with failover, or for simple failover. For some reason many routers lack this feature. It’s essential for anyone running a small business that always needs to be online, and a nice convenience for those who can afford a backup internet connection for their home. Impressive Wi-Fi performance
I was able to connect to the RT2600ac using Wi-Fi at a nominal speed of 867Mbps when using a nearby laptop. Perhaps more importantly, I was able to get a usable signal (over 10Mbps) 100 feet away through a dense structure — even with the router in a wiring closet. That’s a larger range in practice than the best Ubiquiti access point, the Orbi, or any of the other individual mesh units on the market. So, if you can put the router in a central location, it may be enough to cover your entire home or apartment. However, the RT2600ac stands by itself in the Synology product line, so if you need additional coverage, there aren’t any plug-and-play mesh options you can add to it. Of course you can always just add APs or extenders and manage them separately from the router. Synology claims the unit can support 2.53Gbps of total client Wi-Fi bandwidth (800Mbps on 2.4GHz and 1733Mbps on 5GHz). Technically, the router uses MU-MIMO with up to 4 streams to enable that type of peak performance. Because the antennas are detachable, you can even replace one or more of them with your own. This is particularly handy if you want to keep the router in a closet, but locate an antenna or two in a better location. Intrusion prevention, without compromising performance
The RT2600ac features integrated Snort-based active intrusion detection. Turning it on will probably provide you with hours of fun figuring out all the awkward networking requests made and received by your various mobile devices and IoT products. It’s definitely worth doing as a learning exercise, and a good way to clean up any major vulnerabilities. However, most of what it finds, at least configured with the defaults, will probably turn out to be “innocent.” The package uses a free Emerging Threat (ET) ruleset, but can be configured to access a paid account. Synology’s less-powerful router, the RT1900ac, has been criticized for slowing down when running Intrusion Prevention. The increased memory (512MB) and beefier dual-core 1.7GHz CPU appear to have addressed that issue in the RT2600ac. I didn’t find any measurable impact on Internet throughput when I turned it on. You do need to add a USB drive to the RT2600ac to run Intrusion Prevention, providing a place to store log files. I simply put an old 2GB thumb drive in the USB 3.0 port, which seems to be fine for this limited use. There is also a full-size, full-depth, SD card slot. In this era of 256GB SD cards, one of those might be enough to serve your entire music library without needing a power-hungry disk drive at all. Should you upgrade your router to the Synology RT2600ac? There are a few reasons you might want to upgrade your router to this one, or a similar current-model high-end unit. First, your router might be holding back your broadband speed. Plug your highest-performance computer directly into your cable modem and run a speed test. If you get better results than going through your router, you may want to upgrade. Installing the RT2600ac boosted our tested broadband speed from 140Mbps to 250Mbps, for example. Second, if you’re a little short on Wi-Fi coverage, and don’t want to mess with extenders, the RT2600ac will almost certainly give you more coverage than your current router. Finally, if you want to add some services to your network, Synology’s Package library gives you a straightforward way to add a VPN, DNS, and various file and media sharing services to your router without purchasing additional devices.
