Uhhhhhh probably merpirates? It's really gross and sappy. Dive into the ocean and kiss a mermaid in front of your entire crew. The 2 broken arms fic also got a pretty happy ending (Aizawa goes to bed and also maybe jerks it a little)

Do you write crossovers?

Not crossovers per se but I do enjoy a deep in the weeds AU

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

I don't think so? The worst I get is people saying "wow almost no typos" which is very tame lmao

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Not yet! Kintsugi (the epilogue to 9L) will have some mild spice but I'm at a point in my life where I just couldn't be jazzed to write folks doing it sloppy style

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I don't think so except for that website that's scraped like a ton of fics a few months back

Have you ever had a fic translated?

I had one person request to translate 9L into Ukranian, though I never saw if they ended up doing it. Recently I've also had a couple people leave comments in Spanish so I assume they translated the story into Spanish somehow!

The unpublished FFXII AU is partially co-written by Robbirdthe8th, but it's been parked for like a year and a half. Also I would be remiss to omit @kyurilin who might as well get bonus credits for the Nutstang

People tell me I am good at characterization! I think I'm also good at describing a setting, a skill that I exercise often in my technical writing.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Exposition, my nemesis. A necessary evil, but it's like pulling teeth, every time.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

Short answer: I just. Don't.

Longer answer: I think there's a time and place for it, and I've seen both well-executed and clunky ways of doing it. I've never seen a need for it yet in anything I've written.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

BNHA was the first fandom I published anything for, though honourable mention goes to Fruits Basket and FE3H for convincing me that I can tell my own stories (and then get stuck trying to figure out how to write fiction woops).

What's your favorite fic you've written?

Listen it's gotta be 9L. This fic is the reason I have made so many friends in this community. People have drawn fanart for it (one of which now lives permanently on my desk in the form of a mousepad, thank u Dragon). It is the story that got me into writing fic because it was a story that nobody else was telling, so I wrote the story that I wanted to read.

People still get to the endnotes on 9L and are like THIS IS YOUR FIRST FIC???? and yeah. I started writing fanfiction at the tender age of 28 and the first thing I decided was worth sharing is still my magnum opus. Anyone can write fic! Find a writer whose style you like, emulate it, and write the story you want to read. It's that simple.

Facts about Dean:

Dean’s robot build is the Nordlicht Labs ‘knockoff’ version of the Docile(Which is a knockoff of another line) He’s not one of them, but he’s built to be a lot like them, almost like a younger (nicer)Flour.

His body has a metal exoskeleton, with silicone ‘fleshy’ parts to replicate skin where appropriate. Dean has far less nerve endings or programming that would cause him to feel his body, since he wasn’t built with the intention of sadomasochistic sex like all the Docile were.

Dean was built with the intention of housing the soul of a person, to give a second life supposedly to a sickly boy who grew up as a test subject in the facilities.

The boy in question:

The experiment didn’t really work, Dean’s personality is almost entirely different than the boy he was before. Not that.. anyone complained.. He had no family to mourn him.

Dean is very soft and clingly, and he imprinted quickly on the head of the scientist facility, Sara Nordlicht. He hangs around her family quite a lot as a result, occasionally tasked with keeping a close eye on Iris

He lives in the science facility itself, as many of the employees do. He has a very simple apartment in a wing made for robots

He keeps a chinchilla in his small apartment

Um he doesn’t actually know he has a person inside him, so he wanders feeling aimless and like his whole identity hinges on what he can do for people. They give him little odd jobs and turn a blind eye to him mostly. No one talks about what happened.

He knows May, Middy and Flour pretty well. May is like a distant older sister to him. Flour scares him. Middy is a close friend of his, and they often go to school together when she’s in finer repair to be able to.

Dean goes to Herz academy as a means of following Iris around, as well as a way to socializing him and Middy

OOC fact: Dean was just meant to be a male body for Dosy to use freely who ends up developing into a younger brother for her. He actually dates back pretty far as a concept

In one brief version, he was made to be Dosybear’s ‘husband’ for the current story, but again, got little-brother zoned by her.

i don’t have a lot on him yet that I feel confident in, sorry ;<; I’m basing him a little off Shinji Ikari from Eva, so he can be a bit of a wet blanket sometimes.

Bonus: favorite food is probably uhhhhhh pudding parfait. He doesn’t really need to eat human food, he usually just grabs a can of battery acid (the equivalent to an energy drink probably)

Gertrude and the cat-avatars, pt6

Summary: We meet some more girls!

A/N: Uhhhhhh I tried my best...? Similar to the first part, thanks @dcartcorner bc the idea came from their stream and also for liking this au. Also additional thanks to the chatter in today's stream that gave me enough motivation to finish the next part.

The next four arrived close to each other in pairs. Not too long after Sasha, Jon, Martin and Tim made themselves comfortable. 

The first one was a rather fluffy light brown cat. The eyes were bright blue though there were scars going straight over those. Gertrude has a suspicious feeling that something was wrong with the eyes. Especially considering the cat right next to them. It was darker with stripes. Right beside the other, occasionally bumping into the other with a meow. 

Gertrude didn’t do anything about it. Thinking they would leave the next day. Two days passed and instead another pair came in. One of them dark grey with yellow eyes, for a moment the cat looked up at her and Gertrude nearly shivered. Sure, sometimes one of her cats would glare at her as if they wanted to kill her. But this one felt like the statement could be held true. As if she was watching a tiger in a small ordinary cat form. The other was also grey, though with black stripes over the body and black paws. 

Gertrude ended up having to let them all stay. The light brown cat was taken to the vet in which she was informed that, while the scars had healed over, the cat was blind. Gertrude did not necessarily want a blind cat. She still had work and was, admittedly, a bit worried over how a cat unable to see, would be in a house full of other cats. 

Gertrude had googled up inspirations for names. In the end she had landed on Melanie, the blind cat. Georgie, the one by Melanie’s side. The grey who seemingly wanted to kill Gertrude any time she looked at her, had been named Daisy by Fiona and the other had gotten the name Basira. 

A week into living there all four cats had gotten mostly settled. Daisy and Basira seemed to prefer being alone, Daisy having a habit to hiss and glare at others. Georgie had managed to befriend Jon, as well as someone could befriend him, while also sticking to Melanie’s side. Gertude felt slightly relieved by the fact that Melanie didn’t have to navigate on her own. Though Gertrude got real concerned as she went to make dinner one day after work only to find Melanie on the counter holding a knife in her mouth.

We've put together headcanons on which country the guys would be from in a Latin American AU but if they were all Mexican they'd all be from different states too

Nathan– This man is connected to the ocean this man is incredibly jarocho-coded. Every Veracruz meme applies to him. I know that a state in the west would make more sense due to all the whale business but please humor me and just let me have this

Pickles– Was raised somewhere in eastern Edoméx and promptly ran away to Mexico City. Which is not nearly as great a distance as Wisconsin-California but people in the city act like he came from the other side of the planet, which is actually comforting to him

Murderface– His regio vibes cannot be understated. Spends his life at the grill whenever he's not playing bass or stabbing things and does not know what a tree is. Fierro pariente

Toki– Canon Toki was raised in the unforgiving cold winters of Norway so Mexican Toki was raised in the unforgiving humidity of the Tabasco rainforest. Whenever their village was flooded his parents probably used to make him clear out the water armed only with a squeegee

Skwisgaar– He is güero he was born in Chihuahua and always gets mistaken for a Mennonite. Skwisgaar please sell me some cheese please just sell me some

Charles– Even within the canon timeline i hc that he comes from money so in this case his family probably owns some kind of successful business in Jalisco. Hell, they probably produce the brand of tequila that got Nathan fucked up in Prankklok

okay so with all this au talk, the DnD college au is actually occupying most of my brain space. here's how it starts (LOTS more info under the cut):

Yosuke is a college first year and has had terrible luck doing the whole fresh start, make lots of friends (and get tons of babes) so far.... so while he doesn't like his suitemate Kubo too much, when Kubo wheedles him to join him for some dorm board game thing (so he doesn't look like too much like a creep going alone; and "it's not like YOU've got any plans on a Friday night, Hanamura") to get close to Yuki-chan- "and there are other hotties there!!" Yosuke doesn't protest TOO much. plus there's free food!

board game thing was actually a DnD session a couple of other first years are trying to put together. also in attendance are: Souji (the dm), Yukiko and Chie (they're already friends but don't know the rest of the group), Kanji, Naoto (Rise is there briefly (she's Naoto's girlfriend); she won't be joining but she wanted to steal Souji's cooking and catch up a little as she, Naoto and Souji are already friends- Naoto is the one to help convince Souji to put together this DnD recruitment, actually. Rise's very busy but she'll appear on occasion throughout the campaign when Souji begs her to play a dramatic bit parts for NPCs) and Ai just cos I feel like other people than the IT should join for a lil bit (she will make an excuse 20 minutes in "ohhhh something came up I'll be right back." she doesn't.) Mitsuo will not be returning after the first session after Yukiko flatly turns him down. Teddie is back home with Yosuke's parents since he's not college age yet and won't be a part of this at all, probably

first session is a little messy (the enthusiasm levels vary wildly among the players) but what hooks Yosuke and gets him to come back again is one of his off the wall ideas in combat actually worked and won them the battle and the dopamine he got from that is unmatched

what's the campaign look like: UHHHHHH i don't know but I have the vague idea it would somewhat mirror the events of p4- so instead of some world ending adventuring maybe the gang uncovers a serial murder plot? but more fantasy. and maybe the murderer's story is somehow tied to the NPC that Yosuke eventually falls in love with idk

the gang's characters!

Naoto already had their character planned out beforehand: an elf ranger ♂ (Souji had to talk them down from going into some super specific off-book combo to not scare off the newbies that hopefully would join). Yukiko, Chie, and Kanji had all actually read the recruitment flyer for this event so had a vague idea of their characters but haven't played a ttrpg before so just went with what appealed to them rather then how they play. Yukiko: tiefling warlock (and after she learned Naoto is x-gender she thought that sounded fun and made her character x-gender as well; Naoto thinks maybe they're being mocked but it's genuine on Yukiko's part). Chie: human monk ♀. Kanji: halfling cleric ♀. Yosuke had no idea what he was getting into so he's just going for what's Coolest. he considered being a super yolked warrior but nah... not even in make believe. But he could be an awesome stealthy ninja!! So he chooses rogue. as for race, he's not going to be an elf that's basically like being a fairy, right, and he's not... but he thinks they get cool bonus powers or something so he'll go with half-elf.

(Ai tried to be an elf princess but Souji gently maneuvered her to elf druid. Kubo went with the first things that caught his eye: dragonborn barbarian)

as for names, only Naoto came up with one already (Erawin <deeply into western high fantasy>); the rest of the gang workshops names at the table:

Yosuke: Jira (i'm not creative what do u want from me .)

Chie<sweating, desperately trying not to say her literal first thought > : her name is……uhhh… <gives up> Lee…

Yukiko just tries vague grunts to turn into a name (“Grgk!” “no” “Aaaht!” “no” “ERP!” “sounds like a belch” <yukiko laugh > “is that a name?? er- no” “Hrk!” “OKAY YES HRK YOU CAN BE HRK”)

Kanji: Usagi (it is for the reason you're thinking)

anyway the main meat of the au is an NPC appearing and then reoccurring throughout the campaign that Yosuke's character forms a natural rapport with... Souji picks up on this and fleshes out the NPC beyond what was a throw away background character. the gang try to do their DnD sessions every week for at least a couple hours, but it still takes them weeks and weeks to get through what Souji planned. since it's so gradual, Yosuke doesn't notice when their characters' banter turned from playful to outright flirtatious...

and he swears he's not like THAT but he can't help getting so genuinely upset when he dies* in Jira's arms and Yosuke can't separate character from person when he hears Souji's voice tells him before he dies that he- he loves--

Hello, I have come to give references if you're still drawing other's characters by the time you get to this. And. Also have some other information because I love her.

Plus a bonus something I really quickly threw together of a preview of how she would have looked pre-game while I was working on a dragonborn makeup replacer a bit ago

This is my resist durge, a mostly rogue and a little bit draconic sorcerer. My inspiration when making her was anodised enamel pins, so I imagine there being more of a blue to green gradient along places like her horns but couldn't get the way scale colours work in this game to cooperate. She's a bronze dragonborn that overused her breath weapon when she was younger resulting in this (ignoring the fact that anodisation does not work like that), and having lost my ability to be creative when I got to naming her, I simply named her after the process, so Anodesia. She usually also has the deathstalker mantle on her but I gave it to a companion to test something and forgot to put it back on her when taking screenshots ú_ù

She's trying her best to learn how to be a person instead of a weapon, and tends to get attached to those she likes a little too quickly. Would stare ominously at people from the shadows for literally no reason and would genuinely try to kill the gods to show affection. One of the holes the tadpole left in her brain is located where her self preservation used to be, or so she likes to joke.

I think that's already too much information so I'm gonna end here but uhhhhhh DM me references for something you want me to draw in return 👍🏼👍🏼

Dragonborn are so fun tbh, I think that's a great name! Love the idea that she's coloured like an enamel pin and the fact that she overusing her breath weapon caused her current appearance, that awesome :D

I tried my best to obtain that glow-ish appearance from here reference and I also tried to get the anodized look (?)

Dragonborn have a special place in my heart cus they were one of the first dnd races a really had to learn to draw, mostly because I'm my group's designated artist and since my first campain there has been a dragonborn (a rogue aswell ironically dahjfklahn)

idk man, like i kiiiiiiinda get where horikoshi was trying to go with the ending, but i feel like if things got tweaked and moved around a bit like i'm thinking below, it probably woulda turned out better (and this is with fan ships completely out of the equation); stuff thrown under read-more 'cause i got wordy:

when we see the kid with the stitched up mouth, have it be at the ending's 'present day' (gone is the plate boy unfortunately because imho trying to make a full circle with him just didn't work for me at all; bonus points for changing that one 'full circle' cover to have stitched-mouth boy instead)

the old lady sees the kid, remembers coming across tenko all those years ago, prob has some inner monologue about how if she had done things differently back then would things maybe have been different idk but other than keeping that to herself and not outright sayign it to the kid, the main point is she still goes up to the kid and goes 'hey, are you okay? do you need help? there's a hero agency nearby, i can help you find proper help'

it sorta shows that society is still taking some baby steps in changing its way, still has a long way to go, but the signs are there

the hero agency just so happens to be dynamight's agency (todoroki could technically also work here, but hear me out) --- kid prob has reservations about trusting a guy like dynamight of all people, but lucky for him, dynamight shows he gets it (y'know, in his own usual ways), but brings up the fact that there is a place he knows and wholeheartedly trusts to make this kid feel safe

in a way this scene is supposed to bring some kind of 'closure' on kacchan's character development arc; just a 'look how far he's finally come' kinda scene

cut to some place that fosters kids who come from very troublesome/questionable upbringings/living environments that actually does their best to make them feel heard, validated, protected, and offer proper guidance/shelter

cut to i guess something like an exposition that basically explains that this place (and maybe a couple more branches too) is something that's being funded by both Uravity and Deku for people (in this case/facility, kids) to get actual proper help/guidance/education/shelter from not-so-good backgrounds. bonus points for one of the objectives of these places being to also properly educate parents who think their kid(s) 'aren't right' to maybe uhhhhhh stop fucking thinking that way of their kid(s) and treating them like shit

cut to another exposition i guess where we find out that aside from hero work being uravity's primary job and teaching as deku's, on the side these two have been doing their absolute best to try and fix the system from the inside out through either/both individual and/or joint projects like these places, and over time this awareness/movement has been trickling down towards the others from class 1-a (maybe even also class 1-b), at least in terms of being resources that not only do just 'generic hero work', but also search for and point those who are struggling in the right direction --- a slow progress, again showing it's still taking a lot of time for things in society to truly have changed for the better, but the WIPs are there and going.

imo this would prob be a 'good enough ending' that neither makes everything look so 'yep it's all fixed' nor 'nothing has changed'

i guess the extra chapter could play generally the same way? BUT the key difference is that kacchan's subliminal recruiting and the dekuraka ship moments are switched. hear me out.

dekuraka ship moment can happen maybe during a break from the party, ochako maybe steps out 'cause lingering thoughts about the toga-dream, deku maybe steps out to have that shigaraki reflection, idk but basically they can have their moment there (bonus points if it happens while the gang inside talks about the whole dating part)

near the end of the party, the gang's all like OH WE HAVE ANOTHER THING TO CELEBRATE/ANNOUNCE and deku's like huh i thought this was just for todoroki and then toshinori walks in, gives the whole shpeel about everyone (kacchan especially of course can't forget that bit and right in front of that boy too lmfao gottem) pooling in to get those support gears for deku, and gives deku the suitcase

everyone goes all TRY IT ON WE WANNA KNOW IF IT FITS/SEE HOW IT LOOKS and deku's like well okay and does just that but is all like why would y'all do all this for me?

and then that's when kacchan (again in his own kacchan ways) tries to recruit deku (and then someone says it plainly and of course make kacchan go YOU DIDN'T NEEDA SAY IT FLAT OUT YOU IDIOT)

but kacchan just looks at deku like 'well? i know you still have that fight in you, and i'm not done trying to show i've surpassed you' or some cheeky shit like that

and everyone just looks at deku like what's he gonna say is he gonna take the offer and work on becoming a hero again?

and deku just looks at everyone, at his support gears, having that shigaraki reflection moment flash in his head again or some shit

and then it ends with just a close-up on his mouth forming into a smile. what is the smile implying? that's the kicker.

Ooooh, good question! Not an unhinged ask, but a really hard one. I've been thinking about it on and off today. Because on the one hand, Shelley is really gentle and soft, and on the other hand she's a sharp blade, in a way. With a healthy dose of artsiness, gayness, an ability to vanish (in the fog) and a great mind (literally). She's small yet big. And very elegant.

I am still thinking, to be honest, because a lot of animals have crossed my mind but none of them felt right apart from some type of smaller lizard. Or maybe an ocelot. ... Yeah actually maybe ocelot is the best one: small, elegant, incredible eyes, beautiful patterns, very capable predator but might look less dangerous. I'll add pictures:

With bonus lizard. She "was their dragon", after all, so some type of lizard doesn't seem too far fetched. But I do think she's more likely to be a warm-blooded animal. She's a very passionate person, after all, and being their dragon had not been by her own choosing. (If she's an ocelot she better not be allergic to herself though XD) What do you think?

When is comes to nicknames, uhhhhhh... I have to admit I'm terrible trying to think of a nickname, I've never used nicknames for people nor have I ever been given one. I am however now giggling at the idea of Laura saying "me-ow" in greeting, in a flirty way 😂 Does that count?

8. Who is the big spoon? Little spoon?

I think they all just swap, after all it's great to be held in one of their partner's arms as well as hold them, I see no reason why any of them would settle for just one of those positions. Some of them have preferences though - Penny prefers being the big spoon, Vinnie prefers to be the small one and Minka likes being the big spoon except that in her case she's more like a backpack but still. She just likes clinging like that. Bonus, is that I like thinking they all sleep in one big-ass bed sometimes (or more realistically they make sleeping place on the floor so they can all fit together) and then they all spoon, so there's one person who is just the small spoon, one who is the big one, and five who are both. Pshshsh that's so cute to imagine.

13. What is something they find attractive about their S/O?

Oh boy let's go. Since there's so many of them I will give each of them one things the rest of them (as a whole) find attractive

Zoe - the fact that she is so confident about romantic stuff because of her experience (contrary to them)

Sunil - t-tall, some of them find this sheer thing more attractive than others (cough cough) but they all think it's attractive anyway

Russell - how he takes charge of all of them and somehow manages to make it work because crap that's some real talent. Russell might think compared to his friends he has no specific talent but he's very wrong (especially when we consider that some of them are not so good at their "talents")

Pepper - her assertiveness, it's kinda connected to her getting serious sometimes but it's also just a geeral thing. She doesn't take shit from most people, if she genuinely believes she's right it's really hard to sway her the other way

Minka - I just have to go with that headcanon you sent me, when she paints over whatever things others are insecure about like scars or scretch marks. It makes them go >////>

Vinnie - uhhhhhh I don't know, you tell me. Is there anything attractive about the man? I don't think so. They took him out of pity, I think.

Penny - she's not Zoe, but damn can she dress so good whenever she tries. Like, if she wants to she never misses and they love whe she gets like that, with the right outfit she also gets more confident so that's attractive as well

97. How do they wake their S/O up? Is it difficult to rouse them?

Ok, first of all Vinnie and Pepper are both hard to rouse, they just want to sleep and sleep and sleep (probably because of that depression at least partly) especially given that they stay up more often than not. If others want to wake them up what do they do? I go with your heacanon, they tickle them :>. Or with Vinnie they can wake him up with specific food too

Now Minka, can be hard or she can be easy, you can never be too sure. Others wake her up by just kinda shaking her gently by the shoulders cause she's a pretty deep sleeper

Russell is not hard to rouse at all especially given that he usually is the one who gets up first. And if he's not he's good at getting up at the hour he planned anyway. But if others do need to wake him up in some case they just cuddle up to him and gently kiss all around his face

Zoe and Penny are the same as in they're pretty good at getting up at decent hours too, but if needed others just do a sleeping beauty thing and kiss them on the lips until they wake up. And Sunil, oh man he can be hard to wake up sometimes. He needs his 8 hours damn it, no less, can be more though. If he got them then it's fairly easy to rouse him but if he didn't then uh oh. He will grumble and just go back to sleep if possible and so if someone else is waking him up they do it carefully, quietly talking in his ear, maybe adding some gentle touches. General rule is just to be really careful when waking him up, or better yet just let him wake up on his own if possible

i've had back for more on repeat for several days so uhhhh here is my official plotting call for all my txt fcs! under the cut is basic info for all of them, as well as a few plot/ship ideas. i’m open to other plots too; please just have someone or something in mind!

benny (they/them, gay, beomgyu fc): sweet shy autistic ooak doll maker, i mostly use their witch verse but they have a non-magic verse i don’t mind using! they’re very soft and don’t go out much but they have a lot of online friends and when they do get close to someone, they’re so adoring. i would love more supernatural/magical connections, friends to lovers, and/or someone who’ll flirt with them a ton to make them super flustered.

seunhwa (he/they, bi, soobin fc, tw for death and abuse): indie foley artist preparing to take over the family bookstore because none of their siblings want to. he’s very colorful and outgoing but has a lot of trauma he hides. very flirtatious and very self sacrificial. i would love something messy and unhealthy, since he’s so much of a people pleaser he can get mixed up in toxic dynamics if it makes the other person happy, but i’d love to see him happy just as much ajshsjsh.

porter (he/him, gay, taehyun fc): surfer boy and environmental science major who recently got out of a very toxic relationship and is trying very hard to recover from the trauma and be a good person again. looks like a fuckboy jock until he's citing academic sources during an argument. i would love to see him try to reconnect to a friend he pushed away during his relationship, or anyone who’s patient and kind enough to work with him through all his trauma and fear of being in a relationship again.

yiseok (they/he, queer, yeonjun fc, tw for general gross zombie stuff): died and uhhhhhh came back very wrong. they’re basically a zombie, trying very hard to pretend everything’s normal. even more shy now than he was when he was alive, hungry all the time. i would love any supernatural/magical connections for them, especially because they don’t understand what happened to them; something soft and tender where they can realize that they’re still worthy of love and affection; or something unhinged and dangerous where they don’t have to hide what they are from their partner.

max (he/him/any pronouns, pan, yeonjun fc): bookworm who got in a surprising amount of fights as a kid. very scrappy and hardworking, and is helping jinsun open their salon. flirts by shamelessly reading smut in front of his crush. i would love a childhood friends to lovers dynamic; or some kind of rivals/nuisances to lovers; or a casual fwb thing that gets messy and needy but both of them deny there’s anything real.

lincoln (he/him, bi, heuning kai fc, tw for homophobia): the extremely spoiled baby of his disgustingly rich family, experiencing consequences for his actions for the first time. is an animation major specializing in video game character design. i would love to see him with someone who does not take his bullshit and argues with him at every opportunity; or the boy who his parents have forbidden him from seeing at the threat of losing all their financial support (bonus points for this one if they were pretty casual so they have to hunt him down to get an explanation for why he ghosted them); or the shy person tutoring him in a subject he failed because we love cliches in this house.

Eurovision Special!

I would just like to start this by saying woah. I have been keeping up with Eurovision for the past 7 years and have written about the last four, and this is easily the biggest shitshow I have ever seen. Never before has my Twitter been solely about Eurovision, and never have I seen Americans actually kinda care.

Just to make it clear from the beginning, Israel should not have been in this competition and should never be invited back after all they did this year, although we all know that since they own Moroccan Oil they will never face any consequences. Not only that but their song this year sucked! It got the lowest rating from me this year, even putting controversial stuff aside.

Anyways, it is time for the annual tradition of me telling you what my five favorite songs were and what I thought of the entries this year. If you've read any of my other Eurovision posts (I've reviewed 2021, 2022, and 2023), you'll know that I go through and grade all of these songs on a spreadsheet through a very objective rigorous process. I grade on five categories (which are eerily similar to what the jury does): Singer, Song, Catchiness, Performance, and the bonus points category Diversity. The max score is technically a 40, but that last category can and has put some songs over the edge. Oh and this ranking is based on how much I like the song, so the order may not fully match the scores.

All the drama aside, this was one of the best years song-wise for Eurovision (this was definitely the hardest its been to rank the songs ever). I think countries are starting to understand that being quirky pays off, so now we're getting real song diversity and really amazing performances. Also, Eastern Europe really gave it their all this year and I cannot thank them enough. (Oh and all of these songs, minus Croatia, are NOT IN ENGLISH!! Truly an incredible year)

5. Netherlands - Europapa by Joost Klein

Score: 35/40

Notes: good energy song itself is meh

Final Ranking: uhhhhhh, that's a long story

Look I get it, this song truly embodies Eurovision in every way. It's in Dutch, one of the silliest languages out there, he's out there wearing crazy outfits and has a silly haircut, its a euro-techno hit, he has the emotional angle since it was dedicated to his parents; this is one of the most perfect Eurovision songs to enter. All that aside though, its not that interesting or awesome as a song. The main riff is incredibly catchy and the production choices with the piano are pretty cool, but it just feels like a rip off of the silliness of last year's "Cha Cha Cha," down to ending in a boring techno breakdown. I think this song is a clear response to that (down to the shoulder pads) but it still is pretty good and did a great job making this year even crazier than anyone thought possible.

4. Greece - ZARI by Marina Satti

Score: 33/40

Notes: I've never been more flummoxed

Final Ranking: 11th

This song on the other hand, is one of the most interesting things I have ever heard. Marina Satti as an artist and this song has been occupying my thoughts nonstop, because what the hell is happening here. It's like Rosalina-style cumbia got lost in the East Mediterranean and the music video leaves me even more confused. The crazy jumps from Arab traditional flute sounds to strings to a cumbia baseline to a men's choir, to a melodramatic echoey bridge? I took a whole class on writing about music and I can't find the words to describe this one. And all of her media around it uses 2005 word art fonts and clip art? And she is serious about everything the entire time. Everything she does is hilarious and off the wall, yet she continues the persona of a pop diva. I seriously cannot get enough of her.

just want to point out that this is one of her real album covers. The word icon doesn't cover it.

3. Armenia - Jako by LADAVINA

Score: 41/40

Notes: Trumpet player hot or not

Final Ranking: 8th

Speaking of icons, look at these two! I really think this year was countries really embracing their native genres, whether that be Eurodance, Mediterranean Cumbia, Eastern European Emo, or Armenian folk music. This song just truly embodies fun. The lively beat, the screaming and yipping, a crowd cheering, the wailing trumpet, the random instruments whispering in the background. Listening to this makes you feel like you are a part of the coolest party ever, with flute and ukulele solos, and freedom to yell as loud as you want. I cannot get enough of this song and the energy these two bring to it, and I am so glad Armenia picked an absolute banger to represent them this year.

2. Estonia - (nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi by 5MIINUST x Puuluup

Score: 44/40

Notes: EASTERN EUROPE IS BACK BABEY

Final Ranking: 20th

This song is just awesome, in every way. You have this weird Estonian string thing, voices so low that it sounds like throat singing, all mixed with that kind of techno that feels so intrinsically Eastern European. The music video has them driving around a Soviet-style building complex just messing around in abandoned warehouses and parking lots. This is what I'm talking about when I say that countries are going back to their roots and not just trying to send what they think is the most marketable. I see this as a sequel to Moldova's entry last year, which involved a Eurovision veteran with some new faces, mixing old and new to make a masterpiece that has so much personality.

Croatia - Rim Tim Tagi Dim by Baby Lasagna

Score: 43/40

Notes: Meow cat, please meow back

Final ranking: 2nd!

Look at this guy, he looks like someone who you would love to bring home to your parents and would like cats. He wasn't supposed to compete for Croatia this year and was put in last minute and I'm so glad because my life would have been so much darker without this banger in it. It's a classic emo anthem about leaving your farm-filled hometown to go to the big scary city, but he doesn't take himself too seriously with a name like "Baby Lasagna" and a chorus of nonsense words. The music videos as sped up farmers dancing and a cat that looks exactly like mine (both one-eyed and orange), and is a perfect mix of vulnerable and silly. This really seems like someone who was genuinely making something fun and expressing himself, and just happened to almost win Eurovision in the process.

Here's to hoping Eurovision actually happens next year after everything that went down, and if you're curious my least favorite songs were the offensively boring entries from Israel and Albania.

well speaking from experience (2 months ish before) turning 18 is just like any other birthdays, legally its pretty major like new stuffs you can do now :D and dont sign anything random (contracts are now legally binding ough) (<- advice my uni prof gave us first day in)

turning 18 is like unlocking the next level of minesweeper (mobile) you can now do 19x19 boards (nightmarish) and you will miss when it was just fighting to it (being an adult / graduate highschool)

there is no visible goal now and everyone is heading to a different destination, but so much freedom and the question “what do you want to be when you grow up” turns into “what do you want to be”, you don’t just think but you get in action to actively be whatever you wanted to, and thats cool and so so scary

so celebrate this wonderful day, the gates are open and you’re running to your dreams
