Personally I hate the "no meaningful way" argument. Imo it's meaningful just by those characters being who they are and not having to constantly remind people "I'm queer!" or "I'm bi!", etc. Rosado, and I know some others feel similarly, is the only one I'd argue is way too "in your face" and is similar to Heather from RD/FE10, where you keep getting a constant reminder about the primary trait of that character.

Writing characters should just come out naturally. You shouldn't need the character to say "I'm xyz" - you should be able to infer that from dialogue alone. For most of the Engage cast, that's definitely the case. You can generally figure out where the characters stand from dialogue, behavior and actions.

Characters shouldn't be written simply to fulfill an LGBTQ+ stereotype, but should be those things as part of their character - it should not be their character. Real people are just that - people, but some are LGBTQ+ and that's just one facet of them.

Typically when it's done in what these people are suggesting is a "meaningful" way, it's the only aspect that character has, repeated over and over until you forget they may even have other characterization. Frankly, as someone who is LGBTQ+, I find it to be a huge disservice to make characters whose personalities revolve solely around being LGBTQ+.

Kyza, also from RD, is another awkward instance of LGBTQ+ whose existence solely revolves around his/their (masculine appearance and uses gender neutral pronouns in the JP script - you can thank the localization for taking that out) one-sided love for Ranulf. Personality whomst? All I see is a character that exists for the sole purpose of filling the FE LGBTQ+ quota.

Imo it's almost always the actual LGBTQ+ characters that are written the most shallow. The primary aspect of their existence is to obsessively remind the audience that they're LGBTQ+. Monica reaaaaally blurs the lines, since I'd argue she has some personality outside of Edelgard, but they basically just made her obsessively in love with Edelgard to the point it's like 80 percent of what she talks about, rather than making her a good, intricate character who also happens to be in love with Edelgard. Considering I shipped them before Hopes even existed, I'd like to think it says a lot that the level of reminding of her romantic feelings is absolutely overboard.

Also, Niles iirc was kind of controversial because of his oversexualized characterization and being the only same sex option for men. It ended up feeling more like a fetish situation, and I'm sure there were ace men (or even not even ace but just generally uncomfortable with it) who didn't like it and wanted another options.

Basically I find that IS is not particularly capable of writing openly LGBTQ+ characters. If the character has to say they are and we can't infer that just from dialogue/etc alone (ex. Alfred), chances are that's going to be more or less their only personality trait and they're not going to have much of a characterization outside of that.

I feel like we got very lucky with Yuri. One could somewhat argue for Jeritza, but since his only same sex marriage option is Byleth and he has zero indication of any romantic interests with any other guys, it feels more like a forced "here let's add another same sex marriage option to shut them up".

Yuri is a man who views himself as a man, and wears makeup for the sake of appearance (i.e. not to hide injuries, etc) and because he likes it. He calls men "cute" from time to time without it being explicitly romantic, and it's not a constant repetitive quote that happens so many times that you can predict every conversation he's going to have.

Those among other things, he breaks gender norms perfectly while still having a complex and wonderfully written character. He's a good character who also happens to be queer - not a queer character who is just written to be queer for the sake of being queer. Wouldn't ya know it too - he's one of Houses' most popular characters. He's one of the best written characters as well imo and clearly written with more attention and care than most LGBTQ+ characters.

Also funny how people argue about the supports being so gender neutral about Alear, when people were actively complaining that Dimitri and Claude weren't made bi and saying their supports could've been, like Edelgard's with Byleth, just the same exact thing regardless of Byleth's gender. That people just wanted the options and didn't even care if the conversations were altered based on gender. Now all of a sudden, now that we have that, it's a problem?

There really is no making most of this fanbase happy, I swear.

People on Twitter denying that Engage’s cast is very queer coded is really funny to me lmao

Like, to an extent, I can understand it seems cheap and inoffensive just to make Alear’s romances gender neutral and them being the only ones to have paired endings is sad. Fair.

But deliberately ignoring how fruity the Engage cast is? What? Supports between Fogado/Alcryst, Fogado/Pandreo, Diamant/Amber, Etie/Goldmary, Celine/Hortensia are very gay! Anything that comes out of Alfred’s mouth is gay! Merrin is very les to the point her personal skill is her escorting women like the handsome gal she is!  Kagetsu and Chloe are very open and brazen with their gay words (okay maybe the former is explained by language barriers but honestly he’s probably queer, too)! Rosado personally executed the gender police himself!

Part of the criticism of Engage’s queerness is that no character “uses it in a meaningful way” i.e. explain deeper parts of their characters, and Twitter people compared it to X, Y, and Z characters from the game that shall not be named, and idk, personally in a game with a tone like Engage, it matters less to be specifically descriptive and matters more to be more playful and fun with it. It’s not like Fates where there were only two same sex S support characters and so they had to be written with that directly in mind for their characters (which Treehouse then removed, damn thee), but Engage from the jump tries to be more feel good and hopeful, so not only does there not really need to be character arcs intertwined with implied differing sexualities, that opens the avenue for more of the cast to be read as queer/queer coded by fans.

Dragons Rising Season 2 part 2 teaser breakdown

my thoughts and feelings regarding the DR s2 part 2 trailer. I have not watched any external analysis. this is pure unfiltered me

So we start off strong with Beatrix punching someone or something. Given the red landscape, I'm thinking it's Lloyd in his vision. So that's great. Very interesting that they keep bringing her up in the visions but we haven't seen her yet. Maybe she'll show up in the Tournament?

And may I just say that Source Dragon looks beautiful! Still in Lloyd's vision. The crown she's wearing is glowing and that might be significant. Could be showing her powers? Whatever those are. Fire or Motion would be my guess.

Lloyd has a little close-up shot with him looking pretty worried. Could be in the vision still and I'm guessing it is given the red shading around his face. So yay another confusing/angsty Lloyd vision! That's what we're here for!

We get a good look at the Tournament place! Idk if it's a palace or what. (again, haven't watched any other reviews.) But it's very big and colorful. The little TV in the background shows Lloyd doing something, probably fighting.

Whoever this guy is, ringing a bell. Could be the start/stop of fights, that would be my guess. No idea who that is but he'll likely be significant and say some lines.

KAIIII! Kai in the Netherspace! Still in his Climber Suit and I'm glad. We've seen people change outfits when they probably shouldn't have so I'm glad they didn't (yet) with Kai. He goes through an upside-door and walks into a room with at least three of the Forbidden Five! They're all facing to the right with their heads bowed. One of them is glowing and might be sitting on a chair or throne. There's no waaaaaay that'll EVER be significant (can ya hear the sarcasm??). I can't WAIT to see how they're gonna deal with him in there cause there's no way Kai won't get into a fight. I hope if he does it's to protect Bonzle. He's the big bro ever <3

Cinder with...fire??? It looks like Wyldfyre's Heat. Idk. Is that was smoke is supposed to look like?? I don't remember that at all from last season. If he can use Heat then Fy is in trouble.

Master Lloyd (hehe) fighting someone at night. I'm hoping it's not part of the normal Tournament but it's getting caught doing smth at night cause that's more fun imo. In that whole sequence he's only playing defense—just blocking attacks—and not trying to land a hit of his own. It would be crazy if he's fighting Jay. That would give a reason for no offense. Also the attacker's outfit is new.

Jiro and Zanth fighting Imperium guards! They could be with Beatrix since Imperium stopped fighting dragons. I wouldn't be surprised if there were still guards loyal to the ex-empress.

We've been here before... Hopefully Fy has a better time (though she gets blasted back by Cinder using Shatterspin in the video soooo idk). If Cinder is using Shatterspin, the Gong of Shattering and a wolf mask are readily available for him.

I'm curious why they didn't add more of Kai in the Netherspace. It could be more of a secret thing like how they hid Jay so far in the series by not putting him in ANY trailers or promo clips. Lots of mystery surrounding him. PLEASE let him fight the Forbidden Five at some point!!

For those who follow me since THIS post, know that I gave up on that theory. It was interesting to think about but honestly made no sense. I have other headcanons for this guy tho.

1 ] he has a white skin

This is an headcanon that I particularly like. In my opinion, his pink skin makes no sense, because it would mean that his skin is from the same material as his pot. To move, it would be pretty hard (but yeah ik magic magic there are literally ear ppl but shh) SO WHAT IF ? His body was a root ? Most plants have white roots. With the other colors in his design, it would look pretty cool tbh.. his pot stays pink ofc.

And like funny part of the headcanon, because his body is a root if you look at his pot from under it's broken because to develop it had to break it lol

2 ] his first name is Alain (pronounced the french way)

It was a reference to what plant he could be but it doesn't work because I have searched and I was wrong, the plant i thought of does not look like his (idc tho, I think that Alain is a pretty cool name and it fits him)

I noticed that after watching someone play big on youtube for the 6 time in a roll lol and that is what made me realize the thing for mushi

I think that it's interesting to point it out because in general, characters with more than two arms tend to use either their upper arms more (makes sense, for character design because it's easier to make them move and because it's where OuR arms are) or both pair of arms at the same time. But his dominant pair of arms seems to be the lower one !

Actually, I think I should maybe watch the video one more time ti be sure of that but sometime guru ant tends to really use his lower arms more

Yea, there were definitely other things going on for sure. Things we'll never know. And we have to keep in mind too that we're just assuming there is some truth to the "Audrey Tea". There might be, there might not!

I do think that the secrecy in their relationship played a role, but maybe not to the extent that we THINK it did. I just looked at how Tom freaked out about the Tolivia pics, about how quiet he tried to keep the fact that he had Nadia living with him in his house, the fact that he and Z were also VERY private even when they got back together, etc. Like, I really don't think Tom is against having a private relationship. I actually think he PREFERS things to be private....just like Z. I actually think they were pretty much on the same page regarding that? And Kishi tried to combat this by giving her more action scenes and development in early part two (which objectively now is probably the peak of all Sakura centric stuff in the entire series) and went out of his way by drawing her with the “prettiest” female character traits in the series

but unfortunately according to an interview fans in Japan still despised her character (to where people were literally yelling at him on the streets that she sucked lol) and wanted Hinata to be the main heroine instead and it just progressed to the point where he just got tired of drawing her and essentially just gave up on her character completely. and this makes sense too because after her battle with sasori her character just completely fell off and even backpedaled where any meager development that she had and was pushed aside and once again she was the sobbing girl on the sidelines begging for sasuke to look at her

it is a shame though that kishi gave up on her, even more so because he felt his efforts to work on her felt unappreciated, because he really could have done something great with her character arc. but in the end he did say that he sucks overall at writing female characters in general and uhhh yeah….at least he acknowledges it

Did he try to make her more popular though? It seemed like he had no grand plans for her initially but because she's part of the main team he had to make her more relevant, didn't he say before she completely slipped his mind? but anw I don’t think he went out of his way to make her more popular. Otherwise he wouldn't have written her like he did, consistently, throughout the entire story. Any time she had a good moment he immediately backtracked. Relentlessly. Which is why, after everything, people STILL hate her character. I had no idea they yelled at him on the streets tho 🤡  as for hinata, he also made sure to say in an interview that hinata is not like a traditional heroine, that she stands in the shadows as opposed to by the hero's side, so I don’t think he really cares about the public wants to see with these girls.

Also this whole idea that he can't write female characters is crap – he just doesn’t want to. he knows exactly what he's doing. Gosh if he was having so much trouble writing them just pretend they're male and then slap it on to a female character's design, you see what I mean? There's no excuse. He just didn't want to. In Naruto specifically he did an okay job with Tsunade ig, and outside of Naruto there's also Saori. So he can. He just doesn’t want to.
